President/CEO’s Message During one of the recent snowstorms that blanketed the Capital Region, employees at our CAP COM Financial Center left the building at the end of the day with much apprehension for the drive home. While the snow had been piling up outside all afternoon, many employees found that their cars had already been cleared – thanks to thoughtful coworkers who took the extra

Savings goals help kids learn Our Youth Program is one of the reasons Norman and Stephanie chose to do their banking with CAP COM. “When I heard about all the great programs CAP COM had for kids I was blown away,” said Stephanie, adding that it is easier to teach children about the importance of saving when they have their own account. “They love seeing those numbers climb!” Helping kids set goals and then achieve those goals is a great way to make the lesson more real for them. Here are some ways you can help. • Identify the goal. Help your child set a savings goal that will help them purchase something they really want. You could even offer a savings match once your child gets halfway there. • Make a plan. Discuss ways your child can earn the money with additional chores or a part-time job. Determine together how much money your child can save each week or month and how long it will take to reach the goal.

• Set money aside. Make sure your child has a Savings Account or another method for savings. Set up a CAP COM Club Account with a fun name that will keep reminding your child what they are saving for: First Car Fund, My Concert Cash, Money for My Phone. If it’s a long-term savings goal, consider a CertifiKID. This Certificate* will earn higher dividends than a regular Savings Account, but you can still make deposits to it during the term. • Follow through. Once your child has reached the savings goal, allow him or her to make the purchase. And, if you agreed to match their savings, make sure you’re ready to do so. Giving your child the knowledge and help to reach a savings goal is a lesson that they will carry with them throughout their adult lives. You might even be surprised: Once your child reaches the goal, he or she may decide to use those hard-earned savings in a different way. *Early withdrawal penalties may apply.

FHA loans have become a popular option for those without a large down payment or who have blemishes in their credit history. FHA loans are available to everyone, not just first-time homebuyers. The CAP COM Cares Foundation, in collaboration with 15 of CAP COM’s partner schools, is supporting the American Heart Association’s Jump Rope for Heart program for the third year in a row. The AHA program promotes heart healthy behaviors for youth, encouraging kids to raise money by jumping rope. CAP COM marked the start of Heart Month with staff members wearing red and raising more than $1,000 to support the AHA. Students weren’t the only ones jumping rope to raise awareness. Nearly 100 staff members participated in CAP COM’s first Annual Jump-aThon. These employees jumped rope for a total of 60 seconds during their lunch break – and some jumped even longer. “We jumped our hearts out and had fun laughing together as we supported awareness of a great cause,” said Amanda Goyer, Foundation Administrator. “It was an exercise that proved you can have fun while taking care of your heart.”


Your eStatement: convenient and secure With identity theft in the news, it’s easy to see why some people might hesitate to sign up for eStatements. While you might worry about how many people could get their hands on your personal information if you opt for eStatements, it is a lot less than the number of people who could get their hands on your paper statements. Your paper statements can be lost, stolen or misplaced, but your eStatement arrives within our secure Connect-24 platform and you must login to view it. When you no longer need them, paper statements should be shredded or destroyed in some other fashion. Your eStatement, on the other hand,

can’t be seen by anyone who doesn’t have access to your account in Connect-24. They’ll reduce paper waste in your home and will arrive faster than the traditional mailed statements. If you like the accessibility of eStatements, consider signing up for eNotices. You can also receive an online statement for your CAP COM VISA Credit Card. To sign up for eStatements: • Log into Connect-24 • Click on “eStatements” in the top menu bar • Choose “Preferences” and then indicate which notices you’d like to receive.

Internet hygiene keeps you safe online You might think “Internet hygiene” means wiping down your keyboard after you use it. While that’s a good habit, there’s another range of behaviors that security experts call “Internet hygiene.” Most users don’t take their online security very seriously, but you don’t need to be a tech guru to keep your computer safe. Security experts consistently recommend you take at least these steps: 1. Download anti-virus and antimalware software and keep them up-to-date. Schedule updates to run when your computer is on, and don’t interrupt the process. If you’re not regularly updating your security software, you might as well not have it. 2. Run scans of both anti-virus and anti-malware software

weekly. Even if you have a strong system, you can still be infected with malicious programs. If you’re on the Internet, you’re at risk. 3. Do it right away. If your computer gives you a message that it needs to download or install critical updates, do it the first time you see the warning. Make sure the message that pops up is from a trusted source, however. There are malware programs that use fake “critical update” pop ups to infiltrate your computer. 4. Don’t click links that take you to sites you don’t recognize, even if they’re emailed to you by a friend or family member. These emails are frequently generated by bots to keep malicious software spreading. 5. Don’t download, install or run any software you don’t

recognize. If you’re installing software you think might be dangerous, you’re putting your computer and the computers of everyone you know in jeopardy. With the convenience of a world of information at your fingertips comes the responsibility to maintain the health of that system. Your CAP COM accounts are monitored around the clock by an experienced team of security professionals for any suspicious or potentially fraudulent activity. Still, we encourage you to be vigilant about monitoring your account for potential fraud. The earlier you catch a potential problem, the faster we can work together to mitigate risk. Planning ahead may help you retire comfortably Calculating a retirement savings goal is one of the most important steps investors can take to help determine if they are on pace to meet that goal. However, most American workers haven’t tried to figure out how much money they will need to accumulate for retirement. Planning Matters What’s important to realize is that the exercise of calculating a retirement savings goal does more than simply provide you with a dollars and cents estimate of how much you’ll need for the future. It also requires you to visualize the specific details of your retirement dreams and to assess whether your current financial plans are realistic, comprehensive and up-to-date. The following four strategies will help you do a better job of identifying and pursuing your retirement savings goals.

online and in print. Each type features questions about your financial situation as well as blank spaces for you to provide answers. An online version will perform the calculation automatically and respond almost instantly with an estimate of how much you may need for retirement and how much more you should try to save to pursue that goal. If you do the calculation on a paper worksheet, however, you might want to have a traditional calculator on hand to help with the math. Remember that your ultimate goal is to save as much money as possible for retirement regardless of what any calculator might suggest.

Double-check your assumptions. Before you do anything else, answer these important questions: When do you plan to retire? How much money will you need each year? Where and when do you plan to get your retirement income? Are your investment expectations in line with the performance potential of the investments you own?

Contribute more. Do you think you could manage to save another $10 or $20 extra each pay period? If so, here’s some motivation to actually do it: Contributing an extra $20 each week to your plan could provide you with an additional $130,237 after 30 years, assuming 8% annual investment returns.1 At the very least, you should try to contribute at least enough to receive the full amount of your employer’s matching contribution (if offered). It’s also a good idea to increase contributions annually, such as after a pay raise.

Use a proper “calculator.” The best way to calculate your goal is by using one of the many interactive worksheets now available free of charge
