President/CEO’s Message It seems like just yesterday we unveiled our new School Banking Program and welcomed area schools to join us in helping our younger generations learn the importance of saving. As our program enters its fifth year, I can’t help but think about all the parents who recently watched their children go off to school in a new year, wondering where the time has gone. More than 70 schools in the Capital Region have CAP COM School Banking days on which our young members can make deposits and earn rewards for saving. The program, featured on Page 4, is helping 10,000 students build a strong financial foundation for future success. For the past six years, we’ve given our College Bound members and their families the tools they need to navigate this transitional time with grace. Education is important to us; it is at the core of the credit union movement. We don’t just try to sell you products, we share our knowledge so that you can make the best decisions for your future. This fall is full of educational opportunities for you! Read on Page 5 about our College Admissions Workshop for High School juniors, seniors and their parents. If you are Retirement Bound, find more information on Page 10. On Page 7, you’ll see how The Capital Region’s Homebuyers Workshop, hosted by our mortgage subsidiary Homeowners Advantage, has helped members like Sara through the daunting process of

purchasing a home. Many people are finding that it’s the right time for them to buy. Rent is expensive and rates are low. The fall edition of The Capital Region’s Homebuyers Workshop will be held on September 29. Our homebuying experts are with you every step of the way.

“Education is important to us; it is at the core of the credit union movement.” Even those members wondering whether this is the right time to buy a car can lean on our car buying experts with considerable years of industry experience. Not only can we help you set up a test drive and get the best price on your car and your trade-in, we can help you make sense of the dealer incentives and bonus offers out there so you get the best deal possible. And, I can’t go another moment without thanking you, from the bottom of my heart, for honoring CAP COM with top marks when it comes to member service in a recent member survey conducted by Raddon Financial Group. I am ecstatic, so incredibly proud, and honored to know that our efforts to benefit every member, every time, every day are making an impact. I hope you enjoy a beautiful fall season. Let us know how we can help you.

We hear it all the time – “What is the difference between a credit union and a bank?” In some ways, credit unions really aren’t that different; we have everything you’d typically find at a bank. But, credit unions can offer so much more than simply a full range of products and services. Credit unions take great pride in providing a unique experience for members. And, in a recent survey conducted by Raddon Financial Group, you let us know that we were doing just that. CAP COM “I go to different branches and I have the same great experience.” said Doug, from Albany. “That says a lot about you.” was ranked #1 among credit unions across the country for overall member satisfaction. The credit union movement is driven by a philosophy of “people helping people.” Members depend on CAP COM’s unique brand of personalized service and the educational information they need to succeed. Service is, in fact, one of the top five reasons to join a credit union. You can find more reasons by visiting www.capcomfcu.org/5.

You can also find informational blog posts and other tools online at www.capcomfcu.org/learn. Over time, people realize that, along with consistently great service, they also have access to all the financial services they need at their credit union. Help us shout it from the rooftops! Let your friends and family know why you are a proud member. If they decide to open an account you could earn up to $250.* Fill out the referral form at www.capcomfcu.org/$25. You’ll receive an email with your unique referral code that you can pass along to friends or family members. If they use your referral code when they open a new Checking Account with Direct Deposit, a Certificate, a Money Market or a Home Equity loan, we’ll deposit $25* into your account. Thank you for putting your trust in CAP COM. We will continue to make you proud.

What’s your story? Share your great member experiences online at www.capcomfcu.org/mystory.

*Referring member must be at least 18 years old. Existing CAP COM members cannot be new referred members. Eligible referrals must be new members who open one of the accounts or loans listed. Referring member’s account must be in good standing. New members must present Member Referral Coupon when opening new account. Employees of CAP COM and its subsidiaries, its volunteers and their families are not eligible. Deposit made to Savings Account and may be reclaimed if the account is closed within 30 days of opening. IRS regulations may require that prizes/winnings be reported as income. Offer may be withdrawn at any time.

The Fall Reading Program begins October 1! We let our young members know how much we value literacy by giving them the opportunity to earn money for reading books.* Students in grades K-12 can read up to five books between Oct. 1 and Nov. 30, 2015 and receive $2 per book! View program guidelines online at www.capcomfcu.org/read.

CAP COM goes back to school It feels like just yesterday that we went “back to school” with our youth members for the first time. CAP COM’s School Banking Program is beginning its fifth year! Our program has grown to include more than 70 schools and more than 10,000 students now have the convenience of making deposits at school, while learning how a savings account works. Don’t forget, if you are the parent of a School Banker, you are also eligible for CAP COM membership and all the benefits that go along with it. We couldn’t offer this opportunity without the many parent and school volunteers who help make it possible. Thank you for helping us provide something a little extra and different for the students in our Capital Region. “Our children are asked to work very hard during the school day which makes the little things, such 4 Fall 2015

as School Banking, or bigger things, such as a visit from CAP COM’s Ice Cream Van, very special,” said Kim, a school banking volunteer at School 18 in Troy. Kim is pictured above with her children and Educational Initiatives Specialist Cassandra Gazeley. CAP COM has always put a high priority on education, starting with our youngest members. Learning to save early is one of the most important building blocks of a sturdy financial foundation. We encourage youth saving with programs that reward kids with cash for their academic success. You can open an account for your child as soon as you have their Social Security Number – and let the saving begin! Visit any branch to open a Youth Account. If you aren’t sure whether your school participates in School Banking, look for a complete list of schools on our website at www.capcomfcu.org/SB.

Kids earn $30 with their final report card Youth members in grades K-12 can earn $30 for their final 2015-16 end-of-year report card.* Learn more about alternate ways to submit report cards at www.capcomfcu.org/grades.

*Must be a CAP COM member to participate.

College Admissions Workshop

High school juniors, seniors and their parents are invited to get valuable tips about admissions applications, scholarships, financial aid and smart financing plans. Tuesday, October 6 6:30-8:30 p.m. (doors open at 6 p.m.) Albany Marriott, 189 Wolf Road Save your seat! RSVP is required: • Register online at www.capcomfcu.org/CA • email workshops@capcomfcu.org • Call (518) 458-2195 ext. 3579 Members who are unable to attend can contact one of our Certified College Planning Specialists: Kim Donah at ext. 3106 or kdonah@capcomfcu.org Ryan Chenot at ext. 3170 or rchenot@capcomfcu.org

Easy tips for managing student debt For many college students, the reality of moving on from college comes right about now, when they get their first student loan bill. Seeing that loan balance for the first time can hit home in a very real way. CAP COM can help in more ways than you might realize. Save. Save. Save. The saving habits you develop now can help you get out of debt faster. Set up a dedicated Savings Account or Club Account and make automatic transfers into it so you automatically put away a little bit each month. Make sure it’s an account you won’t be tempted to use for other things.

Build a strong foundation Your credit score is one of the most important bits of information about you and it determines the outcome of many of your adult life decisions. The kind of car and house you can afford, the rates you’ll pay for insurance and credit cards, and even the kinds of jobs you can get are all determined by your credit score. While most credit-building occurs after graduation, there are ways you can control your credit score now. To start, pay your bills on time. If you’re trying to build a credit history, making on-time monthly payments is a critical first step. This includes both credit cards and other monthly bills (electricity, Netflix, gym memberships).

When you turn 18, consider CAP COM’s VISA® Classic Credit Card. With a low, fixed rate and no annual fee, it’s a great way to start building your credit. And, you can easily apply online. Use your credit card for small, regular purchases – a daily coffee or monthly tank of gas – and pay it off in full each month. Lastly, guard your credit history. Each time you fill out a credit card application, it generates an inquiry on your account. Too many inquiries can negatively impact your credit score. Let us help you get on the path to financial success and look for more educational blogs at www.capcomfcu.org/learn.

Bill Payment Use automatic Bill Pay to avoid fees by making sure your bill is paid on time. If you can, pay a little extra each month. You’ll pay back the loan faster and reduce the cost of interest in the long-run. Contact us to talk about your options. We can take a quick look at your entire financial picture and find the right products to keep you moving forward on the path toward financial success.

to buy?

6 Fall 2015

Having a little piece of the world to call your own has always been the cornerstone of the American dream. It all begins with home ownership. Yet many young people, burdened by student loans and struggling to find stable employment, have postponed significant life decisions, including home buying. Job loss, mounting debt and depleted savings have put home ownership on the back burner for many families. However, things are starting to look up. Here are four reasons why now might be the time to buy. Rent is expensive In many cases, you might end up paying less each month for a mortgage than you would have for rent. Let one of our mortgage experts talk to you about your specific situation. Home prices could rise For most people, a house is the biggest piece of their net worth. While prices have been relatively stable in the Capital Region,

they are unpredictable and have gone up substantially in other parts of the country. By waiting too long to get into the housing market you could end up spending more than you were expecting.

Look at the big picture

Rates are low – for now Currently low interest rates mean that your mortgage will ultimately cost less in the long run. A mortgage rate increase of 1% will increase the cost of a 30-year loan by about 11%. Mortgage availability Lenders are taking advantage of low rates and a booming market to make loans more readily available. Whether it’s your first home – or your fifth – you’ll get valuable information about the homebuying process at The Capital Region’s Homebuyers Workshop. The mortgage experts at Homeowners Advantage will share their tips and information on financing options and common pitfalls. Register today, as seating is limited for this popular workshop.

Summer memories shine

It’s usually the little things that bring light into the eyes of a child – a new pair of sunglasses, the chance to ride a pony or pet a goat, a new backpack for school. With your support, The CAP COM Cares Foundation brought ice cream, ponies, bunnies and goats to Marillac Family Shelter’s annual family day in July. Witnessing what was, for some kids, their first opportunity to get close to these kinds of animals always leaves a lasting impression on our volunteers. Hundreds of school-age children started the school CAP COM is proud to stand year with a brand new backpack that was filled with thousands who gather for with school supplies. The backpack program has been one of the Foundation’s annual traditions for the past 10 years. To date, nearly 2,000 children facing economic hardship have received brand-new backpacks and school supplies to start their school year. Backpacks were delivered to local Foundation partners including the Capital District YMCA, Centro Civico, Commission on Economic Opportunity, Equinox Youth Shelter, Girls, Inc., Joseph’s House, Marillac Family Shelter, St. Catherine’s Center for Children, St. Paul’s Center and eight Capital Region schools. Be vigilant, be thorough One of the fastest ways to spot identity theft is to be diligent about monitoring your account transactions and your credit report. “Look at your account statements every month and view your transactions online in Connect-24 weekly if you can. Open every piece of mail you get, even if it looks like an ad,” said Shane Shoemaker, Manager of Fraud Risk and Security Officer at CAP COM. “Don’t miss the early warnings.” Take a closer look at any transactions on your account that you don’t remember making – especially the small ones. Sometimes identity thieves will make a test purchase of just a few dollars to see if it is blocked before trying to make a larger purchase that could end up costing you thousands. The quicker you spot a problem with your account and let CAP COM know, the faster we can work to protect your account from more fraud.

You are entitled to one free credit report from each of the three reporting bureaus each year. We recommend ordering one from a different bureau every four months so you have a good picture of your credit activity throughout the year. Visit www.annualcreditreport.com to order yours. You’ll need to provide your name, address, Social Security Number and birthdate – but you won’t need to provide payment information. (Always be wary if someone promises you something for free but asks you for payment information.) Listen to your gut when it comes to protecting your personal information. If something sounds too good to be true, it most likely is. If you are unsure, have questions or think you have been a victim of fraud, contact us as soon as you can at (518) 458-2195. We are here to help.

Coming soon! A new way to pay CAP COM will soon offer Apple Pay, putting payment options at your fingertips. Apple Pay, a product of VISA, will allow you to make payments with hundreds of thousands of participating stores and apps using your smartphone. Pay in a single touch with the security of Touch IDTM. Watch for more details about Apple Pay coming this fall.

CAP COM’s card gets even better

We made the list! CAP COM was recently recognized as one of the top Commercial Mortgage Lenders in the Capital Region by the Albany Business Review. Our business experts have strong ties to the Capital Region and we can help your business grow. With more than 20 years of experience in Commercial Lending, Anthony Lanzillo leads our team as Director of Commercial Services. Question: Why is it important for a Commercial Lender to have strong local knowledge? Anthony: Small businesses are the lifeblood of every community. Not only do they provide economic value, but they enhance our culture

and make our neighborhoods unique. Without understanding what drives our region, a Commercial Lender can’t truly provide the best insight to a business owner.

CAP COM will begin issuing VISA Credit Cards with EMV micro chip technology. The move will give you added protection against fraud and will make it easier to use your VISA in other countries that use this technology. Find out more online at www.capcomfcu.org/emv.

We have great products – dividend-bearing Checking Accounts, competitive rates on Commercial Mortgages and Vehicle Loans, and Merchant Services that include credit card processing and payroll deduction – but we also understand what makes the Capital Region a special place to live and do business. We’ll listen to your dreams and help you make them a reality. Contact our team at (518) 458-2195 ext. 2948 or visit us online at www.capcomfcu.org/business. Fall 2015 9

Your retirement plan tune-up Conducting an annual review of your retirement goals and strategy is an ideal way to check that your plans for your financial future remain realistic and on track. With that in mind, taking the three easy steps outlined below will help you conduct your retirement tune-up.

Even if your personal outlook hasn’t changed, keep in mind that uneven returns provided by different investments may have caused your portfolio to shift from your intended asset allocation. If your asset allocation needs to be rebalanced, now may be the time for action.

Step 1: Review Your Retirement Goals Review your retirement savings goals and assess whether anything significant has occurred during the past year that might affect either your outlook for retirement or your current strategies to prepare for it. For example, have you decided to change the date when you’ll retire? Or have you experienced any new milestones such as getting married, divorced, having a child or sending one to college? Any of these events may affect how much you will want to save to fund the retirement you envision.

Step 3: Consider Saving More None of us know what the future may hold. A good way to improve the odds that you have saved enough for retirement is to save more, no matter how prepared you may already be. If you have not already done so, consider funding an IRA. For the 2015 tax year, you can contribute a maximum of $5,500 and those aged 50 and older can make an additional catchup contribution of $1,000. These limits are set annually by the IRS. More information can be obtained at www.irs.gov. Conducting a retirement tune-up is always a great idea but don’t forget to consult with your financial advisor to discuss what else you can do to help achieve retirement security.

Step 2: Take a Fresh Look at Your Retirement Strategy If you haven’t taken a look at your investments in a while, don’t assume that your old asset allocation is still appropriate for your current needs.
