President/CEO’s Message Our members tell us time and again that what sets CAP COM apart is the way they feel when they interact with our staff.

“We are excited to announce our participation in CO-OP Shared Branching.” Take, for example, Bob Bruno (Page 11) who said he’s never seen people who like what they do as much as the staff here at CAP COM. I couldn’t be more proud to hear that. We are honored to be recognized by Capital Region Living Magazine readers once again this year with being the Best in Customer Service and the Times Union has also named us one of this year’s Top Workplaces. Our participation in the CO-OP Shared Branch Network gives you access to your account at more than 5,000 credit union locations across the country with the same personalized service you are used to here at CAP COM. Find out more on Page 3. With summertime comes increased anticipation for those families with students going to college. It’s getting harder to put off those difficult decisions about how to pay for tuition this fall. The reality of increasingly expensive tuition is not something that will go away anytime soon. Our College Bound Specialists are ready to help you find the best solution for your family. You can read some more interesting information about college financing and the products we have for young adults on Page 5.

You’ve been asking for more options and better pricing on auto and homeowners insurance, and we’ve listened. Our newest division, CAP COM Insurance Services (see Page 6), opened for business on June 1. You now have a fast and easy way to receive quotes from many of the top-rated insurance carriers. Our team can help you get the coverage you need at the best possible price. Did you know that, through our member referral program, you can earn up to $250 cash for sharing your great CAP COM experiences with your friends and family? Share your stories! Tell everyone you know about those moments when someone at CAP COM made a difference for you. I would encourage you to share those experiences with our Marketing Team at marketing2@capcomfcu.org. CAP COM showed support of National Police Week by honoring retiring Colonie Police Chief, Steven H. Heider and by donating a total of $2,000 to eight local police departments. More than 200 youth members, ages 5-12,

submitted original drawings for the Police Week contest that answered the question “If you were a police officer and could design your own cruiser, what would it look like?” Winners, recognized at special ceremony, received $50 for their

winning submissions and were able to meet the Colonie Police K-9 Unit at the event. “We applaud the bravery and dedication displayed by our local law enforcement agencies each and every day to ensure the safety of our community. It is

our honor to be able to celebrate their hard work and invite our community’s youth to join in the celebration so they can emulate these role models in our community,” said Paula Stopera, CAP COM President/CEO.

Shen baseball

Kids summer cash

ALBANY – The Shenendehowa Plainsmen’s #1 New York State ranked high school baseball team kicked off their season with a new state-of-the-art scoreboard. CAP COM is proud to have been one of the top financial supporters. “It’s important for our roots to run deep in the communities we call home, and we are proud of the strong partnership we’ve built with our Shen family. It is our hope that the new scoreboard will serve as a local landmark and give the baseball team a new piece of their home to be proud of for years to come,” said President/CEO Paula Stopera. The Vault, CAP COM’s student-run branch at Shenendehowa High School will close for the summer on June 5.

Youth members can still earn money this summer for their academic success. Bring in your child’s final report card at any time during the summer to receive a $30 deposit for the year. While you are here, pick up an entry form for our Summer Reading program. Kids can earn up to $10 ($2 per book) for reading books this summer. Submissions are due August 30 and can be brought to any branch location for an immediate account deposit. Visit www.capcomfcu.org for more details or call Educational Initiatives at (518) 458-2195 ext. 4656. Must be a CAP COM member to participate. Visit a branch for entry form and details.

My college-bound high school junior is Every dollar not borrowed is compounded by the starting to look at schools. We haven’t absence of interest on the other end. saved a dime to help with costs. What CAP COM can help! can we do? Sending your child to college without having any savings isn’t going to be easy, but once you have a good understanding of realistic costs, it’s time to start planning. Here are some things to consider as you plan. Choose flexible schools Apply to and visit a few schools where your child will likely be among the best students. If your child is reluctant to consider schools without an elite price tag, you could frame the concern as one about future debt. Encourage them to think about the next five or six years of their life, rather than just the next four. Take a look at loans If you have nothing saved for college, you’ll likely have to borrow. The federal government sets a cap on how much they will lend to students, based on Estimated Family Contribution (EFC). Don’t give in to “debt creep,” or borrowing more than you need; $19,000 in debt is better than $20,000 in debt.

Our College Bound specialists Kim Donah and Ryan Chenot can help walk you through some of the big decisions you’ll need to make. Kim and Ryan work with College Bound families throughout the year and can guide you through this often overwhelming transition from high school to college. Consider non-traditional options Community college may be an option and most offer discounted tuition for exceptional students. These institutions have the same general education courses for a fraction of the price. Once your child graduates with a four-year degree, that degree will be the same as a four-year student of that school. Have a frank, honest conversation with your student, and then do what’s best for you and your family. Don’t forget to celebrate the positive – you raised one smart kid. Call to set up your free consultation today and watch for information about upcoming workshops.

College Admissions Workshop High school juniors, seniors and their parents are invited to get valuable tips about college search and selection, admissions applications, scholarships, financial aid and smart financing plans.

It seems like just yesterday was her first day of school. Now you’re wondering if she’s ready for a checking account. How time flies. Don’t take this moment lightly. Adolescence is a critical time for teaching children about money. They may be earning their own money and starting to understand the importance of saving for a long-term goal, such as a car or college. They also need to be able to access money without your constant supervision and, for safety reasons, you don’t want them carrying a lot of cash. The solution is their own Checking Account, with a debit card and ATM access. At CAP COM, members age 15 can open a Checking Account with a joint owner who is at least 18. That means you retain control and can monitor spending, helping them learn how to use the account responsibly while they are still at home. When your child is ready to leave the nest, this Checking Account can go, too. CAP COM will reimburse any ATM fees charged on the Young Adult Checking Account (ages 15-25) from anywhere in the world. Our mobile and online banking platforms make it easy to access your account anywhere, anytime. Apply online today or visit any branch to get started.

Spring BIG Benefit Raffle winners announced

Puppies help kids learn The Cohoes City School District has had a special visitor recently, thanks to funding provided by the CAP COM Cares Foundation. The Foundation awarded the school $2,900 for Pets for Progress: Improving Student Learning with Social-Service Dogs in Schools program. The funding will help two puppies become social service therapy dogs serving students at Harmony Hill and Abram Lansing. “We hope these pets can help enrich learning experiences, teach children responsibility and, most importantly, demonstrate

the meaning of true friendship,” said Foundation Administrator Amanda Goyer. The service dogs are trained to establish a school-wide safe environment where the puppy immediately begins to learn socialization, commands, rules, parameters and proper behavior at the same time students and staff learn appropriate commands, interactions, behavior and care for the dog. “The benefits of therapy dogs is backed by research, and these puppies will have a tremendous positive impact on our students,”

said Superintendent Jennifer Spring, Ed.D. Therapy dogs have been used in classrooms across the country to support regulation of emotions and assist in stress management. The dogs also strengthen the commitment to the overall school community by bringing staff and students together to work collaboratively to socialize and train the dog to become a member of the school community. We are excited to welcome “Rozie” (pictured) and “Cappy” to our credit union family!

Who’s Calling? Common phone scams There’s no good way to avoid getting calls from telemarketing companies; they seem to be a fact of modern life. The best thing you can do is be polite in saying “no” and ask them not to call again. When these kinds of calls turn from sales to a scam, though, extra attention may be required. Recently, members reported getting calls from someone who was asking for their credit card information. Please keep in mind, CAP COM will not contact you to ask for your personal information including your credit card number. Here are a few other common phone scams you should be on alert for: 1. The caller tells you your debit card is blocked and you need to enter your card number to keep it from being deactivated. 2. Someone claiming to be from the IRS calls and tells you that you owe money. The caller says you must provide your bank account number in order to prevent being arrested. 3. Someone from your financial institution calls and tells you that you can get a better rate on your credit card, just enter your Social Security Number. If you are not sure about the validity of a call, or you feel you have been a victim of fraud, you can contact the credit union directly at (518) 458-2195. Summer 2015 9

Are you Prepared to Retire? You’ve probably come across at least a few commentators who speak in gloom-and-doom terms about the future for American retirees, decrying a lack of savings and warning of the imminent growth of the elderly population. Given the potential duration and changing nature of retirement, you may want to seek the assistance of a professional financial planner who can help you monitor your plan and make changes when necessary. Among the factors you’ll need to consider are: Time: You can project periods of retirement, reeducation, and full employment. Then concentrate on a plan to fund each of the separate periods. The number of years until you retire will influence the types of investments you include in your portfolio. Inflation: While lower-risk fixed-income and money market investments may play an important role in your investment portfolio, if used alone they may leave you susceptible to the erosive effects of inflation. To help your portfolio keep pace with inflation, you may need to maintain some growth-oriented investments.

Taxes: Even after you retire, taxes will remain an important factor in your overall financial plan. If you return to work or open a business, for example, your tax bracket could change. In addition, should you move from one state to another, state or local taxes could affect your bottom line. Tax-advantaged investments, such as annuities and tax-free mutual funds, may be effective tools for meeting your retirement goals. Tax deferral offered by workplace plans – such as 401(k) and 403(b) plans – and IRAs may also help your retirement savings grow. Prepare Today To ensure that retirement lives up to your expectations, begin establishing your plan as early as possible and consider consulting with a professional. With proper planning, you may be able to make your retirement whatever you want it to be. Use our online retirement savings calculator as a guide. Visit www.capcomfinancial.com/ retirementcalculator. You can also contact one of our advisors for help with your retirement strategy. Schedule a consultation today!
