Global Ethnography

In the fall, you will start with the theoretical course and develop your research ideas. In the winter, you prepare for your research by writing a research proposal. In the spring, you conduct three-month ethnographic fieldwork. As soon as you are back at Leiden University, you analyse your data and write your thesis.

Sociology of Policy in Practice

In the fall, you choose one of our research internships. We introduce you to the internship provider and after a mutual agreement, you are placed at the specific organisation. In the winter, you conduct ethnographic research during a three-month internship. In the spring, you follow the Thesis Seminar to analyse your data. In the summer, you complete the programme with a written thesis and report your findings to your internship provider.

Visual Ethnography

In the fall, you develop your own visual ethnography research project, with a thesis proposal and portfolio film. In the winter, you produce audiovisual materials during a 2,5-month period of fieldwork. In the spring, you analyse your materials and edit a montage of key sequences into a final multimodal thesis. In the summer, you complete the programme with your own ethnographic film and/or an expanded multimedia production.
