Barrens
Continued from page 10
Illinoian age. We’re talking over 100,000 years ago! And unlike most of the barrens found in east-central North America, its soils are not sandy or shallow to bedrock. Instead, below the surface lies a deep, loamy soil which underlies the barrens and nearby woodlands. This distinct habitat houses shrub and bush communities that support numerous rare species. And coupled with the surrounding coniferous woodlands, it attracts a variety of birds, making it an ideal habitat for bird watching.
The opportunity to go wandering through such a beautiful and special place like Grass Lake and the Glacial Till Barrens with Darryl Speicher is something you don’t want to miss, especially if bird watching is involved.
