MANAGER'S NOTES MARK BENTLEY

Hello everyone and welcome to today's match against Coggeshall Town.

Last Saturday's draw here against Hullbridge Sports was very frustrating, especially to let it slip to a 92nd minute penalty. Expectations are high here this season, and on paper this was a match that we were expected to win. Over the course of the match I felt as though we had the chances to win, but we didn't manage to score the early goal that we needed and the longer they kept it at 0-0, the more belief they had in themselves.

On the positive side of things, this is a match that we could easily have lost, so to come away with a point and remain undefeated in the league isn't a total disaster. We're well

placed, but we do need to cut out the individual errors that are making life for our opponents easier in front of goal than we would like. If a team scores a good goal against us then that's fair enough, but we're gifting them with too many at the moment.

Today's match is a difficult one, and we're fully aware of the threat that Sam Bantick poses in attack for Coggeshall. Banno had a brief spell with us a couple of seasons ago and did well, although we probably didn't see the best of him due to injuries. His goalscoring record however speaks for itself and we'll need to defend well to prevent him from doing what he does best.

Heybridge Swifts Heybridge Swifts have today announced that their replacement for Julian Dicks is his Assistant, Steve Tilson. In a short social media statement, they explained: "Heybridge Swifts FC are delighted to have appointed former Southend United man Steve Tilson to the role of first team manager with immediate effect, stepping up from assistant after Julian Dicks' resignation. Steve will be assisted by former Southend player Alan McCormack."

Steve has only been with the club since the summer.

He became a Southend United legend as a player, making almost two hundred and fifty appearances as part of a side which experienced two promotions. He left the Shrimpers to play for Canvey Island, with almost one hundred and fifty appearances there, before leaving to work full time in coaching roles at Roots Hall. These eventually led to him being appointed manager, and he led the club to two promotions and was in charge for seven years.

He also managed Lincoln City and, of course, had a spell in charge of Canvey.

Whilst a player, and prior to his Southend days, he turned out for Witham Town and Basildon United.

He made four appearances that season, scoring two goals in victory over Felixstowe and Walton United, then made twenty eight during 2019-20, memorably scoring a hat trick in a five goal thrashing of Histon. He was chosen to play international football for England Colleges in late 2019, and signed a two year deal with the Yellows in April 2020.

Lloyd took over at the Belmont in the summer of 2019. An injury hit Canvey side gave debuts to McKenzie Davidson and former Scunthorpe United youngster Patrick Hullbridge Sports 1 Virgo and dominated for long spells of Joao Carlos (90+2'p) the first half.

Matt Price appeared to be bundled over in the penalty area by Dexter Peter but the referee waved play on.

Canvey continued to dominate in the second half. Jamie Salmon was off target with a header from Conor Hubble's free kick and then Mike Finneran had the ball in the net but his effort was ruled out for offside.

Kouassi was a real danger down the left and a fine run and cross on 55 minutes picked out Virgo at the far post but he headed wide.

Some good play by Kouassi and Harrison Chatting provided a chance for Virgo but Collins was out quickly from his goal to block well.

Hullbridge though were still a threat on the counter attack. Michael Mignot's shot was blocked by Empochontsif in the penalty area and the loose ball fell to Joao Carlos who fired the loose ball over the crossbar from just inside the penalty area.

Hubble then tested Collins with a free kick as Hullbridge continued to frustrate the Canvey attack.

As the game ticked over into the final 15 minutes, the game became a frenetic end to end affair.

Finneran headed over a Hubble free kick before at the other end a great tackle by Empochontsif denied Mignot as he threatened to break clear.

The game exploded into life on 83 minutes. Hubble's free kick from the edge of the penalty area crashed off of the post and from the loose ball, Hullbridge

broke down the left through Joao Carlos. After initially being denied the ball broke loose and a goal bound effort was blocked on the line via Hubble's hand.

The referee had no choice but to send off the Canvey midfielder for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.

Former Canvey loanee striker Charlie Cole stepped up but Mason guessed the right way and kept his penalty out.

The save proved crucial as moments later, Canvey broke through Price. His pass found Chatting who showed a great touch to escape Sam Brogan and poke the ball past Collins to spark wild celebrations amongst the Canvey support.

It seemed like that was the winning goal for Canvey. Substitute Callum Fitzer broke into the penalty area and appeared to be fouled by Collins but the referee again turned down any protests.

Deep into injury time, Hullbridge won a corner. The right wing kick was blocked at the near post by substitute Darnell Shakes but the referee judged that he did this with his hand.

The referee awarded another penalty and this time Carlos stepped up to fire the kick home.

There was little time for Canvey to react to this and they had to settle for a draw from a game that they will feel they should have won.

Q. What’s been your most memorable moment as a Canvey fan?

Q. If you had to come back as an animal in your next life, what would it be and why?

A. I wasn't around for the glory days like a lot of people. It's a toss up between two more recent moments; either getting to the FA Cup First Round Proper last season, which a fantastic experience in such a poor year, or our last home encounter against Dulwich Hamlet in the Isthmian Premier - the day we officially formed the Canvey Ultras!

A. I would probably come back as a cat. They live the life of Riley!

A. Whatever our current strongest line up is right now. I think our current crop of players is the best I've seen in my short time here, so I'd have faith in them every game. If I can tempt Messi in on loan though, I'm sure I can give him 20 minutes near the end!

Q. What’s the weirdest thing you’ve seen in someone else’s house?

A. I've seen a few life-sized film character statues before. I've probably seen worse but might have been too drunk to remember it!

Q. What movie would be greatly improved if it was turned into a musical?

A. I enjoy Tarantino films, so I think any of them turned into a musical would be pretty entertaining!

A. Teleportation. It would certainly cut out any travel expenses!

CLUB HISTORY COGGESHALL TOWN

Joint second oldest original football club seum, suggest that the Football Club in Essex, Coggeshall Town was formed at was founded by J. K. King & Sons, a local a meeting held at the White Hart Hotel, family seed business. League in 1911 –12. Always known as the “Town” team, after the Great War the club resumed as Coggeshall Town, although they played with a degree of success in the Braintree, Kelvedon and Halstead Leagues it was with the N.E.L. Division II that they really made their mark, increasing their titles to an amazing 14 times up to 1939. The post –war period became boom time for the club as they switched from the North Essex League to the Braintree and District League, before broadening their horizons in the fledgling Colchester and East Essex League, where their previous pedigree rewarded them with a Division 1 start in 1950—51. Runners up. A season later, they were promoted to the Premier Division and built up an impressive Supporter's Club with a membership in excess of 200. Long serving officials, Secretary, John Alston and Treasurer, Norman Burton, provided a sound administrative base.

The Club’s ambitious committee, led by Chairman Lou Marks, then Tom Ritson were soon targeting the Border League as their next step up the football ladder, a goal they duly achieved in 1958—59.

But a shock awaited the Seedgrowers, when, in the summer of 1960, they were given notice to quit Highfields, their home for 65 years. Colonel F.t. Hill came to the rescue, first with an interim pitch at his Holfield Grange and then by offering the use of a bit of land behind the Cricket pitch at “The Crops”. Complete with a new pavilion, which is now the changing rooms.

“The Crops” opened with a Coggeshall Brotherhood Cup –tie against Courtaulds in August 1961. The covered stand was added in 1964.

Now the Seedgrowers began to blossom, winning Division 1 in 1962-63 and under the manager ship of ex Colchester United player, Bob Dale the championship in 1966-67, Alf Marshall was in charge when they retained their title and won the Knock-Out Cup in 1968/69.

Another former Colchester star, Derek Parker, led them to the Border League and Cup double, the Essex Intermediate Cup, 2- 0 v Great Wakering in 1970 –71.

The clubhouse was added in 1971. From 1972 onwards the club played in the Essex Senior League without winning any honours.

The club’s future was threatened again in 1981 when the landowner announced that he wished to sell the land. Once more the club embarked on a fundraising campaign. The commitment of those involved is evident from the efforts of the club manager, Peter Barlow, who embarked on a run from “The Crops” to F.A. Headquarters at Lancaster Gate to hand in an appeal for support to save the ground. A little behind schedule, he arrived at the F.A. to find it closed.

Nevertheless, he raised £500 toward the fund. With the help of Coggeshall Parish Council and the Sports Council the club raised the funding to buy the land and for the first time, just over 100 years since they were formed, Coggeshall Town owned their own facilities.

The facilities at the club were now ready for the team to move up another level and again the team did not disappoint winning the league at the first attempt by 6 points with a goal difference of +116 scoring 146 league goals in the process. The last week of the season was an exciting one, with Coggeshall gaining two wins in five days against their nearest rivals for the title, Felixstowe who were 2nd and Stowmarket who were 3rd. The Away Match at Felixstowe, which was the title deciding game, played in front of a crowd of over 1,541, with Coggeshall recording a 4-2 victory.

This meant that the team achieved its third promotion in a row and moved up to step 4 of the football pyramid for the first time in their 140 year history as they took their place in The Isthmian League Division One North.

The 2018 – 19 season saw further development to the clubs facility’s at West Street, as well as creating new records on the pitch. We were now playing in step 4 for the first time in the clubs History, as well as making our debut’s in the F.A. Cup and the F.A. Trophy . A few additions to the squad were made which enabled us to have a good run in the F.A. Cup, finally losing 1-0 away to Weston-SuperMare in the 3rd Round Qualifying. The good form was carried on throughout the season with the club making the play-offs finishing in 4th place, losing 1-0 away to Maldon & Tiptree in the semifinal.

early close in March due to the Coronavirus pandemic; at this stage, the club had played eight Cup and twenty-six League games. With only four defeats in the league, Town were sitting in sixth place with games in hand over most of their closest rivals and looking in a strong position to make the play-offs for the second season running. Disappointingly, due to the unprecedented circumstances it did not happen.

The 2020/21 season. Due to the continued pandemic, the season got under way in September, which was later than usual. We had made some good summer signings and the squad was looking strong, with the hope of challenging for the play-offs again.

However, after only 10 games, six League and 4 Cup on 31st October the season suspended due to the continued Coronavirus. In the hope of being able, to make restart, Clubs were allowed to keep training and at the beginning of December, we played three friendlies behind closed doors, but with the pandemic worsening the football season was cancelled.

For the forthcoming 2021/22 season, there have been several additions to the squad. Some players have returned to the club after a spell away and several exciting young players have signed. I hope that it will be an interesting and exciting season for fans and with fingers crossed that we will be able to complete a full season.

The following season we drew Coggeshall away in the Essex Senior Trophy 1st Round. In front of a crowd of 28, Canvey looked set to break the club record once more when we found ourselves 7-0 up at half time. This was obviously a very difficult time in the history of Coggeshall Town.

They came bottom of the Essex Senior League on numerous occasions, winning only a handful of matches. They dropped down and had spells in the Border League and Essex Intermediate League, but importantly kept the club alive.

All these years on, Coggeshall are now an Isthmian League club who are more used to competing at the top end of the division. While the club enjoys its current success, the dedication that must have been shown during the 1980's to keep the club going at what during what have been such a difficult time shouldn't be forgotten.
