We would like to extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of the Blues, as well as today's match officials, and hope that they have an enjoyable visit and a safe journey home afterwards.

Recent Results Our last home match saw us set a club record victory, beating Romford 13-0 on Saturday 9th April. Our goalscorers were Conor Hubble (2), Bradey Sach (5), Mason Hall, Evans Kouassi (3), Elliott Ronto and Odei Martin Sorondo.

We followed this up two days ago with a 1-1 draw away to Great Wakering Rovers, with our goal coming on 36 minutes courtesy of a Connor Martin own goal.

EDITOR'S NOTES GLEN ECKETT

Hello everyone and welcome to our final home league match of the season against our old foes, Grays Athletic.

Our last home match here against Romford is one that will be remembered for years to come, with the scoreline of 13-0 setting a new club record. Our previous biggest win was 11-0 set back in 1984, so when we equalled that score on 68 minutes it seemed inevitable that the record was going to go. However, as the second half drew on and we still hadn't scored the 12th with five minutes remaining, I was getting a touch agitated that the chance to witness our biggest ever win was going to slip through our fingers. Thankfully Bradley Sach and Odei Martin Sorondo scored one a piece in the closing stages to seal a remarkable victory.

We followed this up a couple of days ago away to Great Wakering Rovers, coming back down to earth with a 1-1 draw at a ground where we rarely seem to win. We started poorly but grew into the game in the first half, leading at half time after one of many balls across the face of goal from the left by Evans Kouassi was turned into his own goal by a defender.

We were fairly dominant in the second half and had some excellent chances to add a second, but the quality of our finishing wasn't quite there. 1-0 is always a dangerous scoreline, and sure enough a penalty awarded with ten minutes remaining ensured that we had to settle for a share of the points.

The result all but ends our title hopes, and a win for Aveley today at home to Tilbury would see them win the league. It's a shame that our form at the end of the season didn't see us

over the line, with 8 points from the last 18 on offer ultimately being the difference.

If it is the playoffs, then today's match could well be a dress rehearsal for a potential semifinal here on Tuesday 26th April. Grays are currently 6th, one point behind Felixstowe in 5th but with a vastly superior goal difference.

There have been some big games between the two clubs over the years, but a playoff semi final would probably be the most important since the 1994 Essex Thameside Trophy Final which we won 4-3 on penalties after a 2-2 draw.

The reward for finishing in either 2nd or 3rd would be a home match in the semi finals, which would be our first ever home playoff match. During our 2007/08 promotion season we played away to AFC Sudbury in the semi final before winning on penalties away to Redbridge in the final (what a day!)

Our last visit to the playoffs ten years later saw us win away to Bowers & Pitsea in the semi final before losing 3-1 at Haringey Borough in the final. Should we manage to get a home fixture, it would be amazing to see a huge crowd here to give us the edge.

Finally, I'll be stepping back from my roles with the club at the end of the season after 16 years. I'll still be coming to matches, but you'll see me on the terraces rather than the press box - something I will undoubtedly regret in January when it's freezing cold! The draw leaves Canvey 4 points behind Aveley with 2 games left to play with The Millers knowing a win on Easter Monday against Tilbury will win them the league.

Paul Joynes - Manager - Paul became our Manager on 30 August 2021, having joined us in February 2019 as assistant to former manager, Jim Cooper. He has enjoyed a long non-league career spanning well over 30 years. He played for Tilbury, Aveley, Romford and Concord Rangers and then undertook the first team manager role at Tilbury, Aveley, Romford and Waltham Abbey. He was also Assistant Manager at Bishop’s Stortford and Dover Athletic. He lives in Grays.

Dannie Tippett - Goalkeeping Coach Dannie joined in the 2019 close season.

He is a very experienced coach who was at Maldon & Tiptree last season. Prior to this he worked with our Assistant Manager, Paul Joynes at Waltham Abbey and has also seen service at Colchester United and St Albans City.

Allen Hales - Assistant Goalkeeping Coach - Allen is a former manager of Fairlop Oak FC, an FA Level 2 Football Coach and a semi-retired goalkeeper. He joined us in the 2021 close season, following a successful spell as the goalkeeping coach for the Hornchurch FC Under 18s EJA team.

Adam Flint - Assistant Manager - Following the retirement of former Manager, Jim Cooper and the promotion of Paul Joynes to Manager, Adam succeeded Paul to become Assistant Manager in October 2021.

Marc Nurse-Moore - U23’s Manager Marc is a UEFA A licensed coach who has managed West Ham Ladies, Enfield Ladies and Barkingside FC and was Director of Football Development at Clapton. He joined us in August 2020 as the Under 23s coach and was promoted to Manager in October 2021.

Ashley Miller - Coach - Ashley joined us as a defender in the 2019 close season from East Thurrock United. He had previously represented Concord Rangers, Canvey Island, Bishop's Stortford and Chelmsford City. He became a coach in October 2021, working with our Under 23s and Under 18s and is now assisting with first team duties.

Pat Ahern - Defender - Pat joined the Blues in August 2020, but suffered a bad shoulder injury before lockdown in October 2020. He is a strong defender who is comfortable at centre half, but can play anywhere across the back line. He was captain at Witham Town and has also represented Brentwood Town. He is recovering from a shoulder injury.

Joe Bedford - Midfielder - Joe joined us in November 2021. A central midfielder and a regular member of the Southend United Under 23 side, he had been with the Shrimpers since the age of eight and progressed through their Academy to sign a professional deal. He joined Dover Athletic in December 2018 and signed a new twoyear deal ahead of the 2019-20 National League campaign. He had loan spells at

Brightlingsea Regent and East Thurrock United before leaving Dover at the end of his contract in June 2021. He signed for Brentwood Town before the start of the 2021-22 season.

Kai Brown - Midfielder - Kai returned to the club in October 2021. He represented us at youth level and played over 30 first team games as a sixteen-year-old in the 2017-18 season. He then joined Ipswich Town in January 2018 and was awarded a professional contract the following year.

During his time with The Tractor Boys Kai had spells on loan at East Thurrock United and Dagenham & Redbridge. At the end of his contract in July 2021, Kai moved to Welling United.

Anoited Chukwu - Forward - He represented Grays Athletic as a 16 year old youth player and trialled at Premier League clubs, Crystal Palace and Southampton during this time. “Chuks” joined the Academy 92 at Salford City in 2017 along with former Blue, Manny Ogunrinde and progressed to the senior squad, whilst also enjoying successful loan spells at Widnes FC and Ramsbottom United. On returning to the area, he signed for East Thurrock United, but joined Romford before the start of the 2019-20 season and signed for us on 16 October 2020.

Lewis Clark - Defender - Lewis joined us from Bowers & Pitsea, where he was instrumental in their march to the Isthmian League North title in 2019. He made a total of 117 appearances for the club. He also captained the side when they beat us 3-1 in the Second Round of the Essex Thame-

side Trophy, on 11 September 2019 - the day before he signed for the Blues! Prior to this, Lewis represented Thurrock FC. Rimmel Daniel - Defender - Rimmel joined us in February 2022. He was most recently playing for neighbours, East Thurrock United. He started his career in the youth system at Gillingham. He has also had spells at Waltham Forest, Aveley, Hornchurch, Tilbury and a number of seasons at Waltham Abbey. He has represented his national team, Grenada at Under 17 and Under 20 level, where he once scored eight goals in their 17-0 win over British Virgin Islands in 2008 and full international level, winning five caps, scoring against Antigua and Barbuda in 2009.

Lewis Dark - Midfielder - Lewis played for Brentford before dropping into non-league football. He joined up with Terry Spillane at Stansted and was part of the side that won the Essex Senior League in 2010 and were runners-up in the league, but won the League Cup in 2011. He moved to Redbridge with Spillane and after a successful season, Spillane moved to Maldon & Tiptree with his backroom staff and several players including Lewis. Our supporters will remember Lewis's time at the club in 2009 and later during the 2014-15 season under the management of Jody Brown. He has also represented Heybridge Swifts. He joined us during the 2019 close season and was club captain for the last two seasons.

Aron Gordon - Midfielder - Aron re-joined us from Haringey Borough in September 2021, after he made 23 starts for The Blues in the 2018-19 season, scoring six goals.

He has also played for Waltham Abbey and Redbridge after representing Doncaster Rovers and Watford at youth level. His brother, Nathan played for us in the 201112 season when he also scored six goals, from 15 starts.

Mitch Hahn - Midfielder - The attacking midfielder started his career in the youth ranks at Bolton Wanderers before moves to Southend United and Wealdstone. After a long spell at Redbridge, Mitch represented Aveley, Enfield Town, Bishop's Stortford and VCD. In the 2017-18 season he played for Waltham Abbey, scoring against The Blues at Parkside on 23 December 2017 and joined us for the 2018-19 season.

He captained the Maccabi Great Britain football team in the European Games in Budapest in July/August 2019. They won their three group matches, against Sweden (4-0), Spain (9-0) and Switzerland (4-1).

They beat Belgium 4-0 in the semi-finals and lifted the Cup when they triumphed 2-1 over France in the final.

Macauley Joynes - Defender - Macauley signed for the Blues in March 2019. He came through the youth section at Colchester United before completing a scholarship at Cambridge United. He then moved to Waltham Abbey in 2015 and made 135 appearances. He initially signed for us before the start of the 2018-19 season, but left to join Hertford Town before he made a competitive appearance. He left Hertford and signed for Great Wakering Rovers, but he joined us shortly after his father, Paul, became our Assistant Manager, in February 2019.

David Knight - Forward - David joined from Aveley FC in the 2021 close season. He represented England Schools in 2007. The prolific striker has been a regular goal scorer during his career and was the Golden Boot/ Top Goal Scorer Winner in the Non League National Game Awards for the 2018-19 season, after he bagged an amazing total of 43 goals for Bowers & Pitsea to help them achieve promotion to the Premier Division of the Isthmian League. He scored 79 goals in 134 appearances at the club. David has also represented Tilbury, Cheshunt, Hornchurch, Canvey Island, Wingate & Finchley, Eastbourne Borough and Thurrock.

Callum Leahy - Defender/Midfielder Callum joined us from Bowers & Pitsea in February 2022. He was a product of our Under 18 team and made two first-team appearances in our final Conference season in 2009-10. He has also represented Basildon United, Tilbury, Heybridge Swifts and Aveley. His 274 appearances for Bowers is a club record and he also scored 22 goals, helping them to promotion to the Isthmian Premier Division and a place in the First Round of the FA Cup. We were delighted to secure his services.

Jack McQueen - Defender - After an impressive 2019 pre-season, Jack joined us from Barking, where he made his firstteam debut as a seventeen-year-old in March 2018. He also represented Essex in the 2018 South East Counties Championships where they lost in the final to Sussex. He made 34 appearances for us in the shortened 2019-20 campaign. After performing well in our 2020-21 pre-season, we were very disappointed to lose him to

fellow Step 4 side, Harlow Town in September 2020, just a few days before our first competitive game of the season. We were very pleased that he returned to us on 15 October 2020.

Freddy Moncur - Midfielder - Freddy signed in July 2021. He started in the West Ham United youth system and moved to Leyton Orient in 2015, making nine first team appearances. He has also represented a string of Step 2 and 3 non league sides - Wingate & Finchley, Bishop’s Stortford, East Thurrock United, Ebbsfleet, Concord Rangers, Cheshunt, Romford and Harlow. He was with Margate last season in the Pitching In Premier Division. Freddy comes from a footballing family. Father Jon Moncur made 176 appearances for West Ham United and elder brother, George, is at Hull City. Jon had a spell as Chairman of Grays Athletic, before the club’s move to supporter ownership in 2016.

Geofrey Okonkwo - Defender - Geofrey rejoined us in August 2021. He rose through our reserve team ranks and made impressive first-team appearances in the 2017-18 season in the Essex Senior Cup and the final league game of that season, before signing first team forms in July 2018. After another 29 appearances he moved on to Greenwich Borough towards the end of the 2018-19 season to link up with former Blues boss, Jamie Stuart. In the following season, he became an important member of the impressive Cray Wanderers squad.

In 2020 he signed for Staines Town and has also represented VCD Athletic, Cray Valley and Braintree Town, where he was an unused substitute in their opening National

League South game of the 2021-22 season against Oxford City.

Joe Paxman - Midfielder - Joe joined us in August 2020 after representing Basildon United in our Division in the previous season. He started his career at Southend United in the youth system and has subsequently played for East Thurrock United, Romford, Thurrock, Great Wakering, Aveley and Tilbury Danny Sambridge - Goalkeeper - Danny joined us from Coggeshall Town in the 2019 close season. He is a local lad who went to William Edwards School in Grays and fondly remembers that the first time he ever played football was in the indoor ball court at our old Recreation ground in Bridge Road, Grays. His previous clubs include Dagenham & Redbridge, Witham Town, Heybridge Swifts and Maldon and Tiptree. Danny has played well over 400 senior games, 200 of those whilst at Heybridge Swifts which included the first round of the FA Cup and 2nd round of the FA Trophy.

Ryan Sammons - Defender - Ryan represented England Schools Under 18s before spending a year playing University "soccer" in America. He joined East Thurrock United in 2008 and was an integral part of the team that rose from the Isthmian League North Division to the Conference South and had historic FA Cup runs during this time. He made over 450 appearances for the Rocks and was released after their relegation to the Isthmian Premier Division in May 2018. He joined Bowers & Pitsea for the 2018-19 season and was a key mem-

ber of their Division North Championship winning squad in that season. Ryan is a PE Teacher, who joined us in November 2019, following in the footsteps of his father, Phil, who holds the club’s highest appearances record during his spell with the club from 1982 to 1997.

James Smith - Midfielder - James made his debut in our 2-0 League win over Basildon United on 18 December 2021. He has a wealth of professional experience and made 453 appearances, including one as a substitute for Chelsea in 2006. He had spells in the Championship, League One, League Two and the National League, scoring 58 goals in a 16-year career for Queens Park Rangers, Norwich City, Sheffield Wednesday, Leyton Orient, Stevenage, Crawley Town and Yeovil Town between 2006 and 2021. He represented England at Under 16, 17 and 19 level. He is also a youth coach at Chelsea.

Don De Dieu Tantale - Forward - Don signed first team forms in March 2022, after impressing in our Under 23 squad. He has also represented South Park FC in the Isthmian South Central Division.

Josh Wright - Midfielder - Josh was part of the Chelmsford City youth set up and moved to our Under 23s in the 2021-22 season. He has scored freely from the "number 10" position, with 12 goals and two assists in 14 appearances and has been invited to train with the first team squad and has already earned a place on the bench.

with a blend of youthful exuberance and the outstanding quality of the more experienced players. Having equalled the Conference record of Kettering Town and going unbeaten in the first 15 fixtures of the season, both manager and players alike won several monthly awards. A contentious 3-0 defeat at the hands of Mansfield Town in the FA Cup was put to one side as the team turned their attention to the FA Trophy and the league.

The Club’s first season in the top flight of non-league ended in disappointment as they finished 3rd in the league, and went on to lose 5-4 on aggregate to Halifax Town in the play-off semi-finals. The team put the loss behind them as they won a second successive FA Trophy, this time winning 2-0 against Woking at Upton Park in front of more than 8,000 of their own fans in an attendance of nearly 15,000.

Following Mark Stimson’s resignation, the Club appointed former European Cup winner Frank Gray to manage the side in the summer of 2006. Despite the pre-season expectations, Gray only lasted 18 matches before both Jamie Stuart and Mick Woodward had short spells in charge of the first team. Andy King was appointed manager, but his spell was short-lived and he left shortly afterwards, taking control of just seven matches. Justin Edinburgh was the club’s 4th manager of the season, and under his leadership the Club reached the FA Trophy semi-finals where they lost to eventual winners Stevenage Borough.

Survival in the League went to the last day of the season and despite losing 1-0 to Morecambe, the club stayed up courtesy of other results going their way. An extremely indifferent 2007-08 campaign ultimately led to the Edinburgh’s departure, before once again Mick Woodward took the reins with Gary Phillips as his assistant. With only three defeats in the final 17 games, Grays only ended 11

points outside the playoffs. The management led the side into the following season, but Mick Woodward stepped down, and replaced himself with Wayne Burnett who stayed in the job for four months before leaving the Club.

Gary Phillips was promoted from assistant manager for the remainder of the season and the club finished in 19th position.

2009-10 turned out to be the fifth and final in the Conference Premier as both John Moncur (Chairman) and Andy Swallow (Chief Executive) joined the Club. Julian Dicks was brought in to replace Gary Phillips in September 2009, and Kenny Brown was soon appointed his assistant after resigning from his position as manager of CD Javea in Spain.

The team struggled throughout the season, winning just five league matches and losing in their opening rounds of both the FA Cup and FA Trophy. The Blues did however manage to end the season on a high, winning two of their final three fixtures – the first of those away at AFC Wimbledon. In doing so, they recorded their first away league win for 16 months.

The final day of the season was a sad affair for the Club, as we said farewell to the Recreation Ground after 114 years. Both the team and the fans did their part, as the team came back to beat Forest Green Rovers 2-1 with Allseny Cissoko scoring the last goal at the ground.

Following relegation, the Club resigned from the Conference, deciding they would be unable to field a competitive team in the Conference South due to budget constraints.

Following talks with both the FA and the Ryman League, the Club were eventually placed in the Ryman League Division One North.

The end of that season saw the expiry of the lease at the Recreation Ground, and without a home, the Club agreed a two-year deal to play at Rookery Hill, home of near neighbours East Thurrock United. The 2010-11 season was

our first at this level for ten years, and despite having a solid start to the league campaign, a lack of consistency was evident throughout the remainder of the season which meant the team came up short in several matches, finally finishing in tenth position.

Following the disappointing campaign, Julian Dicks and Kenny Brown left the club by mutual consent and the one-time Football League player and ex-Thurrock manager Hakan Hayrettin, was appointed as manager with his assistant Hassan Oktay for the 201112 season. With Hakan appointed, the remit was to challenge for a playoff place. Despite a few below par performances, the Club secured their playoff place on the penultimate weekend, meeting Enfield Town in the semifinal. Trailing 2-0 with ten minutes left, the team managed to force extra time with two late penalties. Unfortunately, with the match still level after extra time it was decided on penalties, with Grays losing 3-1.

The 2012-13 season was a very successful one for the Club. It started with a move to another temporary home, in Rush Green, Romford in partnership with West Ham United. The ground and its facilities were improved, with the Premier League side responsible for the maintenance of the pitch.

With just 4 league defeats and a run of form in the second half of the season which brought with it 18 successive league wins, the Club won the league with three matches to spare, finishing with a club record of 102 points. Two days after the title was secured, the side had the chance to complete the double, however they fell just short in the Essex Senior Cup final, losing 2-1 to Conference South side, AFC Hornchurch.

The summer of 2013 saw two big changes for the Club in a few short weeks. The stay at Rush Green was brought to an abrupt end, with near-neighbours Aveley stepping

in with an offer of a ground share at the last minute. Everyone at the club is grateful to the Aveley Board for this. A short time after it was announced that Hakan Hayrettin would be leaving to join Luton Town. Experienced central defender Ryan Kirby took on the role, assisted by his father Steve Kirby and club captain Lee Flynn.

Season 2013-14 started with a great run of four straight victories in the Isthmian Premier Division including two against highly fancied teams and we led the League at the end of August. A solid start, but we all knew that to stay in that position would be a tough ask and so it proved, with only four wins in the next nine games. Joao Carlos and Jack West were scoring freely, but the team was leaking goals and by the end of September we were lying in mid-table. A return to the team of fans’ favourite Danny Bunce lifted the spirits of the supporters but the results still kept slipping away. A run of only five wins from October to the end of February saw Grays slip towards the relegation zone and a run of postponements due to heavy rain saw the mood within the camp at a low ebb. Even a run to the semi-finals of the League Cup couldn’t lift the gloom. Everything changed when prolific scorer Leroy Griffiths returned to the Club almost ten years since leaving. His enthusiasm and character changed the Club’s fortunes and with several other new signings the team found their confidence and fought their way back up the table with wins at regular intervals with Carlos, Dagenham & Redbridge loanee Joel Nouble and new signing Chris Benjamin scoring plenty of goals.

It took until the middle of April to catch up with the fixture backlog and the team had to play two or even three games a week, within which time they settled into a mid-table position - very commendable when you consider players have jobs outside football. The last

game of the season saw the team lying in a safe position with a trip to high-flying Maidstone. Two coach loads of supporters and many more going by car meant that 150 fans travelled to Kent to cheer on the Blues. Although we lost a competitive game 2-1, everybody enjoyed the trip and gave the players a standing ovation at the final whistle, a great tribute to the thirty-odd players who had pulled on the shirt for our first season back in the Ryman Premier League in 10 years.

By the time the players got together for their first training session for the 2014-15 season on 28 June, we already had another new manager in place. A few days earlier Ryan Kirby had announced his resignation with family and business reasons leading to his decision. It showed once again the time required to manage a Club at our level. The Club acted quickly to interview candidates for his replacement and selected 35 year-old Jody Brown, who had stepped into the breach at Heybridge Swifts in December 2013 when their management duo left to take over at Chelmsford City. Jody moved quickly to assess the strength of the squad at his disposal and introduce a number of new players to assist the club in its plans to improve on and off the field.

At the end of December 2014 Jody Brown departed to take over the manager’s role at Conference National side Welling FC. Player Mark Bentley was installed as assistant manager to Andy Swallow, before taking over the role of caretaker manager in January 2015. In February 2015 the Club announced that Mark had been appointed permanent manager for the remainder of the 2014-15 season. The season culminated in a superb run of results for the Club, including an unbeaten run of thirteen matches, which saw the team miss out on the playoffs as a result of a 94th minute goal elsewhere on the final day of the season.

The 2015-16 season was a real see-saw affair.

A great start saw us top of the League after 10 games and a good FA Cup run took the Blues to the final qualifying round, but we lost in a replay to National League side, Welling United. As we approached Christmas, there was unrest within the squad as a number of players were being encouraged by agents to look further afield in their careers. By the end of the season, 20 registered players had left the club, as owner, Andy Swallow, decided it was time to reduce his financial support for the Club. A run of ten straight defeats saw us finish in 15th place in the League, with many youngsters filling the gaps in the squad left by the departed players.

After Andy Swallow announced that he was stepping back from the day to day running of the Club to concentrate his efforts on the long term plan to relocate the Club back to Grays, a group of supporters set about creating a new Supporter Owned Club. A successful community share offer was launched at the end of June to demonstrate the club’s financial viability for the 2016-17 season. This gave the Club the confidence to apply to the Football Association and the Ryman League for permission to transfer its membership from the company that ran the Club to a new organisation - “Grays Athletic Community Football Club”. In November 2016 Grays Athletic Community Football Club received official confirmation from the FA and League that the transfer of ownership had been approved.

The 2016-17 season was always going to be one of transition with the club moving from private to supporter ownership. On the field, former playing legend, Jamie Stuart returned as player/manager, but he had to start from scratch with a new squad of players. 60 players attended pre-season trials and a squad was eventually chosen to represent the Club
