How Faithfully Do You Practice What You Preach?
In offering advice, sometimes it happens that the advisor preaches one way and practices another. At SCORE the emphasis is on practicing what is preached. Across the country the 10,000 SCORE members who staff 240 chapters consistently emphasize to clients the many benefits of thinking and working strategically, of structuring business plans and periodically updating them. SCORE chapters do that very thing, each chapter annually updating its business plan. That approach, SCORE emphasizes, applies equally to for-profit businesses and nonprofit organizations. SCORE itself is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. But it strives to operate like a for-profit business. For example, all SCORE chapters are required to undergo an annual audit and file an annual report. Doing so brings additional rigor to planning, tracking progress and identifying ways to improve. SCORE also encourages - actually urges both for-profit businesses and non-profit organizations - to pay attention to customer or client feedback, to record it and use it in updating business plans and altering processes. SCORE “lives” that practice. Some examples: 1) Some years ago the Canton Regional Chapter of SCORE introduced a workshop for non-profits that focused on the benefits of operating like a for-profit business. The first several times the workshop was
8
offered it was oversubscribed. Feedback from workshop attendees was consistently positive. But some attendee evaluations told us that participants viewed the workshop structured to run two hours - as too short. They wanted more detail and said they would be okay with a longer workshop. SCORE listened - and expanded the workshop to three hours. 2) Later SCORE received feedback that related that the workshop for non-profits seemed geared too heavily for start-ups. Some attendees expressed a desire for a workshop that was geared toward established non-profits that were looking for advice on improving operations and performance. Result: SCORE created a workshop for established non-profits. 3) On several occasions, the Canton Regional Chapter has queried businesses, asking them to identify needs they felt could be addressed in workshops. Result: SCORE has created a long - and growing roster of workshops including: • Assessment and goal setting • Social media marketing • Search engine optimization • Human resource management • Cash management • Cyber security • Intellectual property • Valuing and selling a business and more! When is the last time you looked closely at feedback from customers or clients? When is the last time you incorporated feedback into your business or marketing
plan? When is the last time you reviewed your customer relations practices? Do you have an employee handbook? How often and transparently do you communicate with your employees - and customers or clients? Whatever you preach, how well, often and thoroughly do you practice it? You can reach SCORE at cantonscore@ gmail.com or 330.880.4004. You can learn more about the chapter, including upcoming workshops, at www.canton. score.org. Q & A: Where Have All the Workers Gone? “Where have the workers gone?” This seems to be a common question posed by any business in any industry, not only in Stark County, but also on a regional, statewide and national level. Finding reliable and skilled workforce is a top issue. The good news is there are 1,800 Stark County students out of the 4,500 students ready to graduate in May that are not in a career tech program, that have decided college is not for them at this time, and that are not entering the armed services. Their question is, “What do I do next and where are all the jobs?” These 1,800 graduating high school seniors are able to launch into entry level positions in our local economy.
10
With guidance, mentoring, and on the job training these young adults can find a career pathway in our Stark County companies and continue to call Stark County their home. Some success has been found by companies that contact the high schools that are near their place of business to request an opportunity to address students in the “What do I do next” category. Savvy businesses present their career pathway opportunities, present current open job positions, build relationships with the principals and counselors at their local neighboring high schools and hopefully on-board a young adult ready to help unleash their potential. In addition, I am sure the local high
schools would love to have more company representation on their quarterly Business Advisory Councils where business input can help shape curriculum such as technical and/or soft skills needed to be successful in life, in their place of business and in the local economy. Q: Where have all the workers gone? A: Many are already here in Stark County and ready to launch! With a little creativity and effort, your business can find that fit with these graduating young adults and help unleash their passion and potential! OHIO HOUSE BILL 514 - Plug We only need look at the recent fiasco in Columbus over efforts to draw new legislative district maps to see the implications of population loss in Ohio. Fewer citizens mean fewer Congressional representatives, and that makes drawing new district lines even harder. Losing young adults hurts even more, as some of Ohio’s best and brightest choose to relocate outside the Buckeye State to begin promising careers after graduation. Ohio House Bill 514, authored by Rep. Jon Cross (R-Kenton) and co-sponsored by Rep. Sedrick Denson (D-Cincinnati), aims to plug the “brain drain” by offering incentives to attract more out-of-state students to Ohio colleges and universities and keep them here – along with their Ohio-born counterparts – upon graduation. This bipartisan legislation offers forgivable loans (up to $25,000 for four years) to

non-resident students who pursue their education at an Ohio higher education institution. Loan forgiveness is contingent on students remaining in the state for three years after graduation. HB 514 also offers a state income tax exemption to all graduating students, both resident and non-resident, for up to three years if they stay in Ohio.
the bill, which is currently in the House Committee on Higher Education and Career Readiness. We are hoping to arrange a local event with Rep. Cross to discuss the bill and will provide details in a later communication. By Jeff Dafler, Vice President of Economic Development & Public Policy
Employers will also have a new incentive if HB 514 becomes law. The bill would allow a refundable tax credit against income tax or the corporate activity tax equal to 30 percent of the wages paid to a student intern. Paid internships – and the opportunities for full-time employment they often create – are yet another reason for students to keep their brains actively engaged in Ohio. The Canton Regional Chamber has endorsed HB 514 and is actively supporting

MAGNET UPDATE // APRIL 2022 Manufacturing powered Northeast Ohio to national and international stardom in the industry’s early days. While the area is still known as a manufacturing stronghold, competition is fierce, fighting to gain prominence and attract talent. Beyond grit and diligence, our region’s manufacturers have access to The Blueprint for Manufacturing in Northeast Ohio (www.makeitbetterohio.org), a vision built on talent, innovation, technology and leadership. All of that combined with MAGNET’s all-in support gives Ohio the edge. Instinctively, Ohio-made MID’s True Sicilian Pasta Sauce harnessed many of the Blueprints’ ideas long before it was even incepted. As recently as 2004, the sauce was made manually. In 2005, they quasi-automated with a new plant in Navarre, Ohio. Ten years later, though,
14
and with the same systems in place, MID’s potential capacity flattened. “We physically couldn’t produce any more product running two shifts over six to seven days – and people were quitting, they were exhausted” says Steven Cress, MID’s CEO. “So, we took the risk to automate, and it’s paid off handsomely.” Before leaning into automation, MID’s was in 80 stores across three Ohio counties with 40 part-time and/or temporary workers. Now the brand – made by a fulltime specialized and skilled 12-person manufacturing team – is in thousands of stores across more than 30 states. “We make more sauce in a few days than what we made previously in a year, and that goes back to automation,” Cress says. Workforce loyalty and happiness have also improved. Our team is paid higher wages
and benefits since February of 2018, and MID’s has experienced zero turnover! “Team members are buying new cars, houses and have a better lifestyle,” Cress says. MID’s’ transition to automation and dedication to its talent illuminate the efficacy of the Blueprint’s strategies and why we at MAGNET so enthusiastically support and look forward to building a relationship with this progressive company. If you have questions or would like to know more about how you can embrace the Blueprint pillars, please call Janelle Lee at 513-257-5338 or at jlee@ manufacturingsuccess.org.
