Valedictory Speaker

Victor J. Dzau, MD, is president of the National Academy of Medicine, vice chair of the National Research Council, chancellor emeritus of Duke University, and past CEO of the Duke Health System. Previously, he was professor and chairman of medicine at both Harvard and Stanford Universities. Recognized globally as a scientist, administrator, and leader, Dzau’s seminal research in cardiovascular medicine and genetics laid the foundation for the class of lifesaving cardiac drugs known as ACE inhibitors. He pioneered gene therapy for vascular disease and was the first to introduce DNA decoy molecules to block transcription as gene therapy in humans. His research in cardiovascular regeneration led to the Paracrine Hypothesis of stem cell action and the therapeutic strategy of direct cardiac reprogramming.

Dzau is one of the most influential leaders in health and medicine. In 2015, he led the important reorganization of the Institute of Medicine into the new National Academy of Medicine (NAM). As the first person of color and the first immigrant to lead any of the three Academies that make up the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, he has brought a global perspective to the academies. As a visionary health leader, Dzau has set an inspiring example, developing initiatives to transform and improve health locally and globally. Under his tenure, the NAM has advanced efforts to improve health equity and address racism throughout its programmatic activities. He believes that health and science leaders should be engaged in developing solutions to broad-reaching social challenges that affect us all. He designed and led important initiatives at the NAM, including the Commission on a Global Health Risk Framework, the Global Roadmap for Healthy Longevity, the International Human Gene Editing Initiative, Vital Directions for Health and Health Care, Confronting the Opioid Crisis, and the Grand Challenge in Climate Change and Human Health.

A leader in global health, Dzau launched the Duke Global Health Institute and Duke-NUS Medical School in Singapore, founded the Division of Global Health Equity at Harvard, and chairs the International Advisory Board of McGill’s School of Population and Global Health. He serves on the WHO/World Bank Global Preparedness Monitoring Board, was advisor to the G20 High Level Independent Panel on Financing for Pandemic Preparedness and Response, co-chaired the G20 Scientific Panel on Global Health Security, and served as an advisor to the G7 (Japan) Health Task Force. He leads the Regional Vaccine Manufacturing Collaborative in partnership with the World Economic Forum and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI). He is co-chair of the Science and Technology Expert Group and a member of the Independent Pandemic Preparedness Steering committee for the 100 Day Mission.

Dr. Dzau has served on the Advisory Committee to the Director for the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) and chaired the NIH Cardiovascular Disease Advisory Committee. Currently, he chairs the Steering Committee of the NHLBI Progenitor Cell Translational Consortium. He serves on the board of Imperial College Health Partners of UK, chairs the International Advisory Committee of the Qatar Precision Health Institute, and chairs the Scientific Board of Munk Cardiac Center of University of Toronto. Dzau also chairs the Singapore International Advisory Council of Health and Human Potential, serves on the Prime Minister’s Research, Innovation and Enterprise Council, and the Board of Singapore Health Services. He chairs the Singapore precision medicine initiative PRECISE. In 2014, he received the National University of Singapore’s Outstanding Service Award and the 2014 Singapore National Day Public Service Medal. In 2019, he was named an Honorary Citizen of Singapore.

Among his many honors and recognitions are the Gustav Nylin Medal from the Swedish Royal College of Medicine, the Research Achievement Award from the American Heart Association, the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, the Poulzer Prize of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, the Henry Freisen International Prize, and the Porter Prize of the University of Pittsburgh. He has received 20 honorary doctorates.
