You know, that "self-talk” that gives voice to the beliefs about ourselves, others, and the world? Well, I’ve come to find out that all that internal chatter or self-talk can either help me or hinder me in leading a happier, more meaningful and fulfilling life. A beautiful quote that holds true to my belief system is so simply stated by Buddha – “What you think, you become. What you feel, you attract. What you imagine, you create.” Listen to your self-talk more carefully! Whether you believe it or not, our self-talk echoes the beliefs that we have come to accept as TRUE, including worst-case scenarios – the should-haves, would-haves, and could-haves. These thoughts that keep humming in your head can become things you expect to repeat, and you may replay the what-if scenarios to a self-defeating outcome. If your self-talk is compelling enough, you can convince yourself to action or the negative result of immobility. Please, honor and embrace your infinite worth by keeping only what serves your highest good and releasing yourself of what no longer serves your best interest. I have found that surrounding myself with positive people, meditation, quotes, art, music lyrics and affirmations inspire me to reflect on what I am feeling inside and gives me the courage to try to move on…to grow beyond my preconceived limitations and to pursue the things that enliven and inspire me! I hope you enjoy our cover art by energy artist Julia Watkins, called "Moon Dancer," and that you are inspired by this art style, known as "energism." Awaken and Thrive with these suggested Modalities. A modality is typically the method of application of any therapeutic agent in the physical treatment of a disorder. In homeopathy, it’s a term used for any factor that alleviates or aggravates a main symptom as an expression of the uniqueness of an individual.

Alchemy Alchemy is commonly known as: 1. a form of chemistry and speculative philosophy practiced in the MiddleAges and the Renaissance, and concerned principally with discovering methods for transmuting baser metals into golf, and with finding a universal solvent and an elixir of life. 2. any magical power or process of transmuting a common substance, usually of little value, into a substance of great value.

While there remains different and specific definitions of what alchemy is, all definitions essentially reflect the shift from one thing to another – one level of life, a vibration or an energy transforming into another, often higher and often a more cohesive, field of vibrations. This can be as simple as transmuting a vibration such as mistrust to trust, or as complex as shifting a carbonbased form to a crystalline form. Both can be construed as an alchemical process. Here we are talking about breaking free from limitations and expanding into your unlimited potentials of well-being, vitality, creativity, excitement and purpose. Aquatic Therapy

Aquatic Therapy refers to water-based treatments or exercises of therapeutic intent, in particular for relaxation, fitness, and physical rehabilitation. Treatments and exercises are performed while floating, partially submerged, or fully submerged in water. Aquatic Therapy is a refreshing change of pace from land-based therapy, and can also be used in cases where individuals are in a great deal of pain and are not able to put full weight on limbs. The buoyancy of the water can reduce weight-bearing on the body by as much as 80%. It also has a positive impact on motion and flexibility, reduces pressure to joints, and can increase the blood flow to injured areas. Aquatic Therapy is a great way to gain motion, and in some cases, can help prepare you for land-based therapy. Myofascial release works by the therapist using her hands, and sometimes elbows, to apply sustained pressure into the areas of fascial restriction (the fascia is a thin sheath of fibrous tissue enclosing a muscle or other organ). May help prevent macular degeneration (AMD) and dry eyes. Cold-water fish such as salmon, mackerel and herring; fish oil supplements, freshly ground flaxseeds, walnuts. RDA: None; but for cardiovascular benefits, the American Heart Association recommends approximately 1,000 mg daily.

Selenium

When combined with carotenoids and vitamins C and E, may reduce risk of advanced AMD. Seafood (shrimp, crab, salmon, halibut), Brazil nuts, enriched noodles, brown rice. RDA: 55 mcg for teens and adults (60 mcg for women during pregnancy and 70 mcg when breast-feeding). Vitamin A May protect against night blindness and dry eyes. If you plan to begin a regimen of eye vitamins, be sure to discuss this with your optometrist or ophthalmologist. Taking too much of certain vision supplements can cause problems, especially if you are taking prescription medications for health problems. The Brain Chemicals That Make You Happy (And How To Trigger Them)

hen we ask ourselves what makes us happy, we often think of the circumstances, possessions, or people in our lives. In reality, happiness is largely a chemical experience. Four main neurochemicals, hormones, and neurotransmitters generated in the brain are fundamentally responsible for creating the sensations and emotions we've come to associate with happiness. This is actually great news. It means even when circumstances, possessions, or people in our lives aren't exactly as we'd like them to be, there are simple ways we can increase our happy brain chemicals and alter our moods.

2. SEROTONIN Serotonin may be the best-known happiness chemical because it's the one that antidepressant medication primarily addresses.

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that is naturally triggered by several things we can do each day.

Bread < Collard Wrap

Bread is full of sugar and carbs, which don’t help if you’re trying to lose weight. Aside from that, it’s often cut with a ton of unnecessary ingredients for shelf life and naturally contains gluten (responsible for the chewiness in bread). Roughly 20 million people in the US have some sort of intolerance to wheat/gluten simply because of the way it’s been overprocessed. These factors often lead to digestive and skin issues, not to mention brain fog and potentially chronic illness and disease. Collards are a great upgrade and are not only really tasty, but they’re loaded with nutrients. They are part of the cruciferous family and are said to have cholesterol-lowering ability. They are chock-full of vitamins and minerals, including vitamin A, K, C, manganese, fiber, calcium and B vitamins.

Cheese < Nutritional Yeast

Though many people can tolerate dairy, we must emphasize again that dairy creates inflammation in the body and is also mucus-forming. Try sprinkling nutritional yeast on items you’d typically sprinkle cheese on. Sure, it won’t give you the ooey-gooey texture of cheese, but it provides a very similar flavor, and nutritional yeast contains vitamin B12 which, in addition to being a complete protein, means it contains all the amino acids we must get from our food. It’s also low in fat and sodium, is free of sugar and gluten and contains iron.

Alfredo Sauce < Vegan Pesto

Cream-based sauces pack a ton of calories, sodium and the obvious, dairy (typically from conventional cows). Pesto is a great upgrade, using nutritional yeast in place of cheese. Don’t worry if you’ve never heard of this. Once you use it, you’ll be hooked, just like me.

Growing up

, you were completely at the will of your parents. Depending on how much love, time, and attention your parents gave you, their involvement in your life undoubtedly affected how you show up in your romantic relationships. If they were there for you, never there for you, or too there for you, you will be drawn to different kinds of partners for your romantic relationships. We are at our most vulnerable within the context of our familial and our intimate relationships. So naturally, our unresolved emotional issues from one (familial) bleeds in to the other (intimacy). From an early age, you learned to be a counterbalance to the other people in your immediate family. Whatever the family unit needed you to be, you became. If your parent/s neglected you, you may be prone to attracting similarly

distant partners in your relationships. If a parent was quick to anger, you learned to walk lightly and be so selfsufficient that you didn’t need any parenting. If one of your parents periodically abandoned you, you may be attracted to partners in the future whose love you have to “earn”, as opposed to being attracted to people that already love you. Since you are so used to being in a certain role within your family, you find partners that keep you stuck in that role (without a lot of self-awareness/self-development or talk-based therapy to intervene in your unconscious patterns). So unless you become aware of, and shift your patterns, you will continue to live out the same emotional trauma that you experienced as a young child. So how do you become aware of how your childhood affects your current emotional patterns and love

Childhood IssuesPlaying Out in Your Love Life


You may cling to potential partners because you’re afraid of being left and you have been conditioned to have an underlying belief that the relationships that you need most deeply will not work out in the long run. While you desperately want love and affection more than anything else, you are also terrified of letting others in to love you deeply.

Defectiveness (Fear of

Being Unlovable) Defectiveness is the feeling that you are unworthy or undeserving of being loved. The feeling that you are somehow defective as a person (also known as shamebased thinking). A sense of defectiveness often comes from a mean or dismissive parent. Especially if you were a more sensitive or introverted child, a cruel familial relationship would weigh heavily on your self-esteem for many years to come. Sit with this feeling and follow it down. If you feel that unique sense of shame when your heart feels rubbed the wrong way… listen to what your heart is telling you. What kinds of thoughts come up for you? And when you feel this way, what defense mechanisms do you employ? Do you keep people at arms

distance emotionally? Do you shut down and become passive in your communication? Your coping mechanism for not feeling worthy of being loved would be to distance yourself from loving relationships of any sort. You might be reluctant to let anyone see you for who you are because “who you are” doesn’t feel good enough to be loved. It can be a scary endeavour to start to shift your behaviour, but small steps will start you on your journey. You don’t have to swing the pendulum from the mindset of “I’m not worthy of love and belonging” to walking around and being an open, vulnerable, exposed wound of a person. Who you choose to let in to your personal space (thoughts, feelings, etc.) is always up to you. And you can take it at your own pace.

Subjugation (People

Pleasing) Subjugators are passive people-pleasers in their relationships. The unconscious process being “If I’m extra nice to you and make you feel amazing with every bit of my being, then you will have to stay and love me. You won’t reject me like the people in my past did.” By making yourself subservient to your partner and prioritizing their needs over yours, you might think you are doing them a favour by adding value to their life. emotional needs met, and your partner often feels like they bear the weight of being responsible for your mood (since your mood is so dependent on how they feel moment to moment). When self-sacrificing subjugators do start to prioritize their emotional needs in the context of relationships, their mind resists it and they often feel guilty for giving themselves any time or attention.

Dependency (Being Overly Reliant on Others) Were your parents overbearing? Did they make every little decision for you? Were you made to feel apprehensive about making decisions for yourself? It’s natural that your parents would be making the majority of your decisions for you when you were very young (what you ate, what you spent your time doing), but after a certain age if you weren’t allowed or trusted to make choices for yourself then you will be often attracted to partners that make the majority of your decisions as well. You might think it’s a good thing to let your partner choose every movie you see together or where you go for a vacation or how much you spend or save, but in reality, you will end up feeling resentful of having little choice, and your partner will not respect your lack of interest. In addition, over time your selfesteem will be eroded, and you may feel unable to leave an unhealthy relationship if you are overly dependent on your partner.  In healthy adult partnerships, both people are comfortable expressing their desires, and they make decisions together.

Entitlement (Inflexible and

Unrealistic Expectations) If you were raised with parents who had weak personal boundaries (i.e. they found it difficult to say “no” to you) then you are at a higher risk of developing a sense of entitlement about the world and an unrealistic set of expectations

what you want in order to prove their love, but this is a very unhealthy view of what love is.

What to do about it? Understand that everything your parents did for you they did from one of two places: their love for you, or their unconscious patterns that their parents put into them. Even if the loving intention isn’t immediately apparent, dig for it. Think “how could their behaviour possibly have come from a place of love? I’ve had clients whose parents were incessantly challenging towards them because they recognized their

child’s “weakness” or softness that they saw in themselves and they wanted to keep pushing their child to harden up so as to not let the world hurt them as much. They did it as a protective mechanism that they thought would benefit their child. Another client told me her father was an alcoholic who was emotionally distant. Her father had the same relationship with his own father, so had thought it best to keep children at arms distance rather than “poison” them with his presence, or have his behaviour rub off on them. If you keep digging far enough, you will find their actions rooted in love. We are together in this grand interplay of cosmic elements. Most of the daily challenges we experience as human beings originate from a lack of understanding. Dharma is the way out of this. The way to cultivate refinement of the mind and uplift the human experience from ignorance and suffering, is to practice Dharma. So what is this cryptic and mysterious notion of Dharma and is there a way to decode it for modern consumption? Dharma is a broad concept with many understandings and definitions, very much like the term coined by Chinese philosophy as Tao. Its translation as "the path" or "the way", Tao and Dharma support the natural order

of the universe and those who are in harmony with it. Dharma could also be described as the nature of "what is" and in Buddhism, refers to the practice of following the Buddha's teachings. The diligent observance and practice of these teachings, is seen as the way to enlightenment. One could argue that Dharma is a truth, a teaching, a practice and enlightenment itself. Living in Dharma means living ones' true purpose and personality, and expressing it in the world. By living quietly in fear, limitation, or otherwise, we are denying the world our one-ofa-kind gifts. Living from the ego denies the full expression of our talents for the benefit of others. The purpose of Dharma is to allow the everyone in the world to evolve to their full potential.

Living a meaningful life requires that we live in Dharma, in service of the whole of creation. Dharma is an active opening, a mission, a doorway, a purpose, a destiny, but also a passive process of surrender.

For the whole symphony of the universe to vibrate at its most refined and poetic, it requires all individual instruments (that's us!) to play their part. Thus, one thing is essential for the greater good — each person must follow their authentic path.

Ever since I was a little girl, it always seemed like there was something there — an energy I couldn't quite explain, a presence that kept me out of harm’s way and always guided me in the right direction. For years, I thought I was crazy for feeling this way. I never told anyone about it, for the fear of being judged or ridiculed. But then, in 2002, all of that changed. I was driving down a deserted winding road in the middle of the night when I started to feel very tired and my eyelids began to close. Then I was abruptly shocked awake by the lights of a tractor-trailer, speeding right toward me. Before I could even react, I felt the steering wheel being pulled on its own. As if in slow motion, I watched as my car was redirected safely back into my lane. As the tractor trailer whooshed on past me, it felt like my car was on a cloud, being guided by

angel wings. With my heart thumping in my chest, I pulled over and caught my breath. I knew it was a guardian angel who saved me. I felt goosebumps and a shiver down my spine. I couldn't believe I was safe. That was not the first time, nor the last, that I had been in touch with my guardian angels. As the years have gone by, these guardians visit me almost daily. I’ve come to know them as my “spirit guides,” because I know they are there to help me follow my spiritual path – the one that is in true alignment with my soul. Everyone has a spirit guide (or several spirit guides), and each of us has the ability to listen to them. They communicate with us in a whisper because they exist at a higher frequency, so we have to be very still, silent, open and accepting.

Tune in and start to believe. To communicate with your guides, you must first believe that you have them. Can you think of moments in your life when you were helped, saved or redirected by some unknown force? Spirit guides come to us in many ways. Spend more time listening to your body, mind and spirit. In those moments of complete stillness, you will receive messages. They may come as images in your head (clairvoyance), a smell or a feeling, or even a sound or voice (clairaudience). Write down what you see, smell, feel or hear, because these are intuitive messages from your guides. continued on page 22 . . .

Meditate with crystals.

Many crystals, amethyst in particular, have been known to have powerful intuitive properties. This purple, brilliant crystal is associated with the Third Eye Chakra, located at the brow between the eyes, associated with intuition and the higher self. When you meditate with amethyst and place the crystal directly on your brow, you will instantly feel increased spiritual awareness as you elevate to a higher state of consciousness. Strengthening our intuition is a direct gateway to our spirit guides.

Get out in nature.

I always feel closest to my guides when I am in nature. Spending time outdoors is very healing and grounding, allowing us to become more in tune with the natural rhythm of the planet. When you’re in nature, close your eyes and listen to the birds, or the sound of the wind, or water from a nearby creek. Place your hands on your heart and ask your spirit guides to come to you. As you sit, you might notice sensations or a presence. This is normal; just take note of how you feel. Part of building a relationship with your guides is also building a relationship with yourself and the earth.

You can ask your guides to reveal themselves to you in meditation, through dreams, numbers and messages, or when you are walking in the park. The next time you are alone, you can try saying this out loud: “Dear spirit guides, please reveal yourselves to me, I want to know you better and connect with you in this world. I thank you for your guidance and care.” Then notice in the next few days if you receive any messages, feelings or strange dreams.

Write down all of the feelings, sensations, messages, or “gut feelings” that you may encounter. Sometimes it’s hard for us to process all the messages that come through! This is why it is important to keep a journal, so you can look back and take note of the details you may have missed. Perhaps you saw a red cardinal and you didn’t know the significance of it, but then, a week later, you read somewhere about how cardinals are associated with relationships, marriage, and courtship, and maybe this applied to your life in some way. The more we write down and then come back to later, the more we can decipher the messages being sent to us from our spirit guides.

Try “automatic writing.”

I began the process known as automatic writing, by meditating and asking my spirit guides to come through me. It was a technique I learned after reading the book, Many Lives, Many Masters. I closed my eyes and meditated, allowing myself to go deep into my subconscious. When I awoke, I grabbed the pen next to me and just started writing whatever came out. As I read the words, I was sure it was one of my spirit guides – it didn’t

even look like my own handwriting! The words said: “Yes, we are here. We have always been here and we always will be.” As with all practices, it may take some time to allow yourself to release the ego (that’s you!) and allow your guides to come through.

Tap into your third eye.

There are other ways to tap into your third eye aside from meditation. There’s the ancient Ayurvedic treatment known as the Shirodhara massage. You lie on a massage table and an experienced, certified practitioner will pour warm oil and essential oils on your third eye slowly and rhythmically, stimulating the chakra. You might have visions or sensations, or you might just feel completely relaxed and full of bliss.

Lastly, you can simply try a third eye massage on yourself or a friend. Lay down in a quiet and peaceful place, with some relaxing music. With the tips of your fingertips, begin to slowly massage the area between your eyebrows, using small, gentle circles. Close your eyes and imagine that this area is being awakened and renewed. Breathe in and out deeply and slowly.

Keep a spirit guide journal.

Each of these techniques can bring you one step closer to meeting your spirit guides. I hope you can find the time to listen to your spirit guides – they are speaking to you every day and have so much to say.

You can also study Reiki, the ancient Japanese form of energy healing. When I received my first attunement as a practitioner, I was able to see completely into my third eye. I saw the royal purple color, associated with the sixth chakra, flush through my body and open my mind. I know for certain this Reiki attunement awakened a higher state of consciousness.
