While we live in a world that seems to be in a constant state of fear and uncertainty more than ever, with challenges and adversities that can be almost unfathomable, we must continue to remind ourselves that this is the time to connect with your fellow human beings like never before. By doing so, you can become a catalyst for change! In my own journey, I try to relate more with the Loise Hays, the Maya Angelous, the Mother Teresas, the Princess Dianas, the Pema Chodrons, and the Wayne Dyers of the world. We must never forget to remind ourselves that we are all in this together – in this short existence on this big blue marble. There should be no “us” or “them,” but one spectacular humankind, connected in heart, mind and spirit. To realize this, we must begin by teaching ourselves that there are better ways to deal with those who would be unreasonable, unkind or unfair. You, yourself, can begin right in these pages. In our article, “The Fine Art of Not being Offended,” you will learn the true ways to understand why people lash out and how to remain calm when under verbal attack because, in most cases, it really isn’t about you at all. It’s typically a manifestation of some type of pain that person is experiencing at that moment. It is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of one of the great founders of the self-help movement and “the Queen of the New Age,” Louise Hay, and celebrate her transition as her spirit moves on. The Author of the books You Can Heal Your Life and Heal Your Body, she taught millions of readers how to create more of what they want in their lives, including more wellness in their bodies, minds, and spirits. Louise was able to put her philosophies into practice when she was diagnosed with cancer. She considered the alternatives to surgery and drugs, and instead developed an intensive

extend kindness to one who may be suffering – even if they themselves do not appear that way on the surface. All anger, all acting out, all harshness, all criticism is, in truth, a form of suffering. When we provide no Velcro for it to stick, something changes in the world. We do not even have to say a thing. In fact, it is usually better not to say a thing. People who are suffering on the inside, but not showing it on the outside, are usually not keen on someone pointing out to them that they are suffering. and move on. In the least, we, ourselves, experience less suffering and, at best, we have a chance to make the world a better place. This is also not to be confused with allowing ourselves to be hurt, neglected or taken advantage of. True compassion does not allow harm to ourselves either. But when we know that nothing is personal, a magical thing happens. Many of the seeming

abusers of the world start to leave our lives. Once we are conscious, so-called abuse can only happen if we believe what the other is saying. When we know nothing is personal, we also do not end up feeling abused. We can say, “Thank you for sharing,” and move on. We are not hooked by what another does or says, since we know it is not about us. When we know that our inherent worth is not determined by what another says, does or believes, we can take the world a little less seriously. And, if necessary, we can just walk away without creating more misery for ourselves or having to convince

the other person that we are good and worthy people. The great challenge of our world is to live a life of contentment regardless of what other people do, say, think or believe. Here's what CVS is Doing about the Opioid Epidemic

EVER FEEL LIKE HEALTH NEWS is too overwhelming, fast-paced, or hard to decipher? Us too. Here, we filter through the latest in integrative health, wellness trends, and nutrition advice, reporting on the most exciting and meaningful breakthroughs. We’ll tell you exactly what you need to know—and how it might help you become a healthier and happier human. CVS Health, one of the nation's biggest pharmacies, just announced that it will be taking major steps to fight the opioid epidemic in America. What will this look like? First, it will limit prescriptions to seven days for certain conditions and will limit the daily dose of pain pills based on strength. It will also set guidelines that require patients to use short-term formulations before moving to extended-release opioids, which are designed for

more severe and long-term pain management. This all sounds great, but the new initiative doesn't stop there. In addition, CVS will be developing new protocols that require pharmacists to counsel patients on the risks of dependence and why it's important to keep their medications in a safe, secure place in the home. They will also almost double the amount of drug disposal units—kiosks where you can safely dispose of unused prescription medications—and are dedicating $2 million to treatments and recovery services for addiction. The changes will officially take effect in February of 2018. Why is this a big deal? First, CVS Health is a major U.S. corporation—composed of 9,600 CVS Pharmacy stores and more than 1,100 walk-in medical clinics, so their reach is pretty substantial. Unfortunately, the

opioid epidemic is just as major and widespread. Experts estimate that there were around 900,000 opioid overdoses in 2015 alone, and the sale of these drugs has quadrupled in the last two decades—despite the fact that the presence of pain among Americans has stayed the same. Kudos to CVS for giving this issue the attention it deserves and recognizing what an important role they play in safe (or unsafe) opioid use. uses breath to circulate energy through the body and energy centers. The focused combination on breathing techniques, movement, and meditation helps the individual to control their reactions to stress.   6. ZAZEN Zazen is the heart of Zen Buddhist practice and

literally translates to “seated meditation.” This method is initially the easiest to engage in because it relies on selfguidance. However, the lack of guidance can make it difficult to progress in the future. Regardless, the mental benefits of Zazen are vast because you aim to forget all judgmental thoughts, ideas, and images. After sitting in a comfortable position ensure that the back is completely straight and you are centered. Breathing is an essential element of Zazen

and this position will allow the breath to deepen and enhance the experience. 7. MINDFULNESS The final favorite method of meditation is mindfulness, which also comes from the Buddhist tradition. The Buddhist term sati translates to ‘mindfulness’ and breathes life into the practice. Conjuring mindfulness is essential in overcoming suffering and understanding natural wisdom. It is all about acknowledging reality by letting the mind wander, accepting any thoughts that come up, and understanding the present. The practice is done by sitting with eyes closed, crossed legs, the back straight, and attention placed on breathing in and out. Yoga Leads to Higher Levels of Awareness and Spirituality

IT IS OFTEN THOUGHT that yoga is a form of exercise: that it is purely a physical discipline. However, regular practice of yoga and study of the ancient yogic texts demonstrates that yoga is a far broader subject that this. According to one of the first known texts (written by Patanjali c400 A.D.) yoga is classically divided into eight aspects or ‘limbs’, so called because these aspects are developed simultaneously rather than sequentially. Patanjali states that the goal of yoga is to eliminate suffering – personal suffering and the suffering one inflicts on others and the eight limbs of yoga are the means by which this is achieved. These limbs are interlinked and each has numerous facets that are experienced through study and practice. It is said that dedication to all aspects of yoga leads to higher levels of awareness and spirituality.


1. THE YAMAS OR SOCIAL OBSERVANCES The yamas are about ‘right-living’ and include the following: Ahimsa or non-violence – towards others or ourselves Satya or truthfulness – in all thoughts, words and actions Asteya – not stealing or coveting others possessions Brahmacharya or faithfulness – loyalty and virtuous behavior Aparigraha or non-greed – only taking our fair share of the world’s resources

feeling. Pratyahara is a means of focusing our minds and directing our energies.

6. DHARANA Pratyahara and Dharana are practiced together in succession. As the attention is withdrawn and turned inwards (pratyahara) the mind is given a focus of attention (often the breath) and the awareness becomes highly focused and concentrated. This one-pointed attention is Dharana.


The aim of the practices mentioned above is to reach a state of Dhyana – complete absorption in the object of focus. In modern day language we use the term ‘in the zone’ to describe someone who is so absorbed in an activity that they only have momentary glimpses of this state of Dhyana, but with repetition and regular practice of all the yogic techniques we become more adept at reaching this ‘in the zone’ state.


Samadhi is the culmination of all yoga and is the point where one is permanently in a state of Dhyana. It is a state of unending joy and bliss and is rarely, if ever attained. By practicing these aspects and incorporating them into your daily life, you will begin to see the amazing changes they can bring about not only in you, but in the world around you. In the words of Paramhansa Yogananda, "Yoga is an art as well as a science. It is a science, because it offers practical methods for controlling body and mind, thereby making deep meditation possible. And it is an art, for unless it is practiced intuitively and sensitively it will yield only superficial results."
