statement It is my pursuit and constant goal to find a concept or approach that is able to not only hold its own amongst the vast amount of other projects and art in the world, but also reach and relate to as many people as possible. Art for me is an experience. It is a comfort and a challenge. It is an oxymoron in that in its simplicity it is complex and innovative. It is my deepest desire to present and create work that can evoke childlike joy within the viewer and yet also provide an emotional comfort and ease for the viewers that may be in a place of unrest and struggle. Being able to create pieces that can be understood and related to as many people of a variety of backgrounds is a challenge that I wholeheartedly pursue and attempt to bring into my designs and work.

market creek plaza banners design challenge To create and design lamppost concept banners for the parking area of Market Creek Plaza in the Diamond Community of San Diego California. The banners must include the words “Market Creek Plaza,” the designated tag line “Where the World Meets,” and the Market Creek Plaza website. creative solution A diamond pattern was chosen for the background of the banners which was inspired by the community as it is called Diamond Neighborhood. The colors were then influenced by the plaza’s surrounding building colors and were brightened so as to draw attention and pop just enough against the surrounding architecture. The tag line was actually found and drawn from a previous tag line used in the past and is now being revived for the current banners. results These banners are concepts made for the potential use and display for Market Creek Plaza. typeface and supportive elements • Adobe Illustrator CS5.5 and CS6 • Adobe InDesign CS5.5 and CS6 • Adobe Photoshop CS5.5 and CS6 • Font Used: Gotham

through europe design challenge To recall an event in my life and write over 1000 word summary for it. After the summary, construct a small book that is around 30 pages. creative solution The solution created was to write about my spring break adventure during my time in Europe when I was studying abroad. In order to create a more personal book to portray how I personally experienced and saw Europe, illustrations of pictures taken are placed throughout the book. typeface and supportive elements • Photography • Color of Band: C-40 M-0 Y-33 K-0W • Adobe InDesign CC and CS6 • Adobe Illustrator CC and CS6 • Font Used: Avenir Next

OUR FIRST STOP On our week long adventure during spring break was to the lovely Berlin, Germany, and I have to say; I truly appreciate the organization and cleanliness of the Germans, however their airport signs need some

Since it was late at night when we got to our hostel we agreed that our real first day in Berlin would start the next day though (because we figured after learning how to read the maps and figure out their public transportation system, we earned a break and had enough “adventure” for one day).

Afterwards, on our walk back to our hostel we stumbled upon a world running marathon and preparations for the European national singing event, Eurovision! We were sad to pack our things make our way back to the airport. Blayne returned to Spain and Hedder and I returned to Florence Italy, concluding our spring break.

to plot our course of action for the next day and then rested. On our first official day of Denmark we got up and found our way to the metro (which was surprisingly even easier to use then the German metro! You know what… to make everything simpler lets just say that everything amazed us all… because it did).

We then went and visited a small section of Copenhagen known as Christiania. This small section of Copenhagen is actually known for its graphite art and hippie like lifestyle.

At one point I recommended that we just follow the river upstream instead of trying to figure out the streets because it would lead us directly to the statue. Hedder and Blayne agreed and because of our stroll on the river we made a grand discovery.

the dream abstracted design challenge Create and use an abstract oil painting and put it into a functional graphically designed situation. creative solution The painting created is of a flattened simplified Japanese mythical creature known as a Kitsune. Surrounding the Kitsune are various creatures designed and created to match the gestural strokes of the brushes and maintain an abstract feeling with their odd shapes and coloring. The images shown on this spread were done by Takashi Murakami and DeviantArt artists Grebnev Pavel and Orphen-Sirius. These were used as inspiration for the project both color and composition wise. The finished painting was then acclimated to a self made magazine mock-up along with a self written article to accompany it. typeface and supportive elements • Oil paint • Adobe InDesign CC and CS6 • Adobe Photoshop CC and CS6 • Font Used: Edwardian Script and Minion Pro

it still works

design challenge Create a print/image that reveals a secret about the theme of Social Anxiety and Depression. creative solution For this project I chose to illustrate and create a print of a spoon drawn in a spastic manner standing amongst normally drawn and composed spoons. A few of the spoons in the line up turn in disgust and judgment towards the sporadically drawn spoon, reenacting a scenario someone with social anxiety and/or depression may experience and feel. The secret that is being revealed in this image is that even though this spoon acts and looks very different from the other spoons that are considered normal, it in fact still is a spoon and still functions in its own way. The colors for this plate were chosen in order to portray the overwhelming fear and heated anxiety an individual may feel in that moment. This image was then taken and put into a poster format to reassure these individuals that they are not in fact alone in these struggles and to encourage them. typeface and supportive elements • Zinc plate • Black, Red, White, and Yellow etching ink • BFK white paper • Adobe Photoshop CC and CS6 • Adobe InDesign CC and CS6 • Font Used: Abadi MT Condensed Light

design challenge Choose a food and show it in some way fighting back against the people eating it, and then put it into a graphically designed situation to show it in practice/use. creative solution The food chosen is the traditional and very controversial shark fin soup. To show this food fighting back I have replaced the fin with the predator that it was taken from, circling inside the bowl waiting for the unsuspecting consumer. I then applied the illustration to a self made magazine mock-up with a self written article. typeface and supportive elements • Graphite powder • Illustration board • Pencils • Adobe InDesign CS6 and CC • Adobe Photoshop CS6 and CC • Font Used: Constantia and Apple Chancery

design challenge After being randomly assigned a statistic found on Google, illustrate a singular image for the statistic and then apply this image in a graphic way. creative solution After being assigned the statistic quote, “Every year over 300 people choke to death on a ballpoint pen,” I created a painting of a zoomed in image of a fork with a ballpoint pen entwined with pasta. This image thus eludes to the inevitable fate of the unsuspecting office worker holding onto the fork. I then proceeded to create a pasta packaging gag gift for the one annoying coworker in everyone’s life. typeface and supportive elements • Acrylic paint • Illustration board • Adobe InDesign CC and CS6 • Adobe Photoshop CC and CS6 • Font Used: American Typewriter and Avenir

mikado design challenge Create and design a poster for the opera performance at Point Loma Nazarene University with all of the designated and required information given. Also the image must be composed of the elements specified by the requesters. creative solution As the elements requested for the image included a cherry blossom tree, a noose, and a bench under the tree with the name of the event and times of the showings, a dynamic picture created in photoshop was made. Creating an interesting angle and different textures provides a mix of modern perspective and traditional artistic qualities for this well known Asian play. typeface and supportive elements • Adobe InDesign CS6 • Adobe Photoshop CS6 • Font Used: Monotype Corsiva and Sukhumvit Set

seconds design challenge Create and design a black and white print on a zinc plate. The design will be determined from the chosen theme for the print, which is to showcase social anxiety struggles for protesting. Use an original character and then implement this print in a graphically designed way. creative solution By showing the original character, Enya, having the inability to protest and externally displaying the turmoil that is felt from within during those frustrating moments, this image demonstrates the character’s struggle to speak her mind. Keeping the line work erratic and seemingly random in a small composition allows the viewer to witness the turmoil first hand that someone feeling pressured and overwhelmed to speak may have. typeface and supportive elements • Zinc plate • Acid for etching • BFK white paper • Adobe InDesign CS6 • Adobe Photoshop CS6 • Font Used: Birch Std and InaiMathi

protein design challenge After being randomly assigned a pet, location, and consumer product, create a brand/logo incorporating all of the assigned elements. creative solution In the assigning process I received a duck named Duo, protein powder, and the location of Buenos Aires in Argentina. I thus created the vector image of Duo and turned him into a type of character mascot. In order to incorporate the location of Buenos Aires, I poised Duo in the form of a tango dancer and dressed him in the vibrant colors found on the buildings in the area. To emphasize that this product provides protein I illustrated and designed Duo to look similar to a body builder. This product, because of its humorous colors and design, is intended to be a gag gift for the special gym rat in one’s life. typeface and supportive elements • Adobe InDesign CC and CS6 • Adobe Illustrator CC and CS6 • Font Used: Hand made • Font Inspiration: Mustachio and Microgramma

The client/student desired her story to be very colorful and was opposed to having rigid and/or realistic images in her story. By using vector art and vibrant coloring, the loose and yet recognizable images throughout the spreads achieved the student’s desired outcome. results At the end of the project, the student was very pleased with the outcome and thus I continued illustrating her story and finished illustrating her entire short story for her. typeface and supportive elements • Adobe Illustrator CC and CS6 • Adobe InDesign CC and CS6 • Font used: Gabriola, Avenir Next, and Candara
