Welcome

to the TLC!

HOURS OF OPERATION SEPTEMBER TO DECEMBER

We can’t wait for fall to start after a great summer! Fall is a great time to get back into a routine of physical activity and here at the TLC, there are so many ways to get you and your family active. For our littlest patrons we have swimming lessons in the pool, or children’s programs like Mini Sportsters on the fields. There are also our Active Kids Preschool and TLC Home School Physical Education programs (page 21). And don’t forget to visit our brand new North Central Co-Op Children’s Play Centre, which received a makeover this summer! Youth are welcome at the TLC, either to work out, participate in a drop-in activity, or in one of our youth programs like DIY Kids. If they would like to come to the TLC to work out, we encourage them to register in Youth RX (10-13 years), which provides them some important info on our facility guidelines and how to safely operate the fitness equipment (page 23). Once they have completed the course, they are welcome to work out on their own in the Fenwyk Fitness Complex. For adults, we have something for everyone. A bursting schedule of both aquatic and dryland drop-in programs, activities like drop-in volleyball or pickleball, as well as a ton of fitness programs with our very best TLC instructors! Be sure to check out all we have to offer for those who want to add activity to their routine. You may have noticed that the City of Spruce Grove is building a new outside rink at the TLC. This rink will be “bookable” by teams and community groups, as well as be available for spontaneous use. We will also have shinny and public skate times through the winter, so be sure to check out our home page and scroll down to the daily drop-in schedule to see what is going on at the new outdoor rink each day. And lastly, as the leaves begin to fall and the snow begins to fly, don’t forget that humans don’t hibernate! Get active with us at the TLC, where it is always 28 degrees on the pool deck!

Just Add Water: Aquafit Kick-Starts

TLC Member’s Weight-Loss Journey

Losing 184 pounds in 18 months sounds like a miracle. A once-in-a-lifetime occurrence that only happens to other people – or maybe on a reality TV show.

But for Joe Cardinal, it’s simply his life. The 48-year-old didn’t use any kind of secret weapon or special trick to shave off nearly half his body weight in a year and a half. He just started exercising at the TransAlta Tri Leisure Centre.

Or, to be more specific, aquacizing. At his peak weight, Joe weighed 464 pounds. He was in such poor shape, the oil and gas company he worked for sent him home from his physically demanding job in Ft. McMurray. They told him to shape up. It was a tough Christmas. Joe was away from the job he loved and feeling unhealthy. Things started to turn around soon after his wife, Judith, showed him a listing for an AquaFit class at the TLC. It was the perfect fit for him: low impact, easy on the joints and suitable for all fitness levels. So, the first week of January, Joe hit the pool. And he continued to do so every weekday for the next 18 months. Those first few classes weren’t easy, he remembers. His face would be beet red and the trainers would encourage him to slow down. “It was hard for me at first, I was so large. It had been a long time since I’d ran. It felt awkward because my body was finally doing something.”

6

. . . e r o Bef But he never stopped. He started enjoying himself and his new routine, which soon became an automatic part of his day. He met new friends and got to know the other regulars in the class. Staff and members greeted him by name every morning. He liked the variety of movements and exercises the different instructors offered. And he began seeing results he could barely believe. After losing 11 pounds in the first two weeks, he started doubling his efforts, adding an extra hour-long aqua class to his routine and eventually putting in miles on the stationary bike on top of that. At home, he and his family changed their diets. They replaced refined sugars and processed foods with lean meats, homemade vegetable soup, eggs, chicken and yogurt smoothies for breakfast. “The Froot Loops had to go,” he laughs.

By June, Joe had lost 100 pounds. Today, the weight continues to drop, bringing along with it life-changing results. He continues his weekday routines, working towards losing a final 30 pounds to reach his goal weight of 250. Unlike before, he can now hop on his bicycle and go riding with his two pre-teen girls. He rests well at night without the help of his sleep apnea machine. He no longer needs custom arch supports for his shoes. And, once he recovers from upcoming knee replacement surgery, he’s looking forward to returning to work. His bosses have kept track of his progress and can’t wait to welcome him back. Best of all, his wife can now touch her fingers together behind his back when she hugs him. “I’d really encourage people that can’t do it, or think they can’t do it, to think about me,” Joe says. “I know me, and if I can do this, anyone can.”

It was hard for me at first, I was so large. It had been a long time since I’d ran. It felt awkward because my body was finally doing something.

NEW! Future Aquatic Leaders

$99 members/$110 non-members This is a non-certification leader development program for youth between the ages of 10 and 15 years. It’s an opportunity for youth to engage aquatic leadership development until they are old enough to take the certification courses. A goal of the program is to train potential future staff that are immersed in the culture at the TLC and have developed a sense of responsibility, ownership and commitment. Youth who are interested in aquatic instructing and lifeguarding but are too young to take the certification courses would benefit from this program. Monday evenings will be spent in learning activities and there will be an option to volunteer with swimming lessons one (or more) other day of the week. 10 classes. LIKE Mother, LIKE Daughter

Lifelong Learning at the TLC When Ashley Ferrier got a note from the kindergarten class her four-year-old daughter will attend later this year, she panicked a bit.

On the list of requirements was that each student must be able to sit cross-legged for a period of time. It wasn’t something she’d ever considered and wasn’t really sure whether her daughter could. But, when she mentioned it to the instructors of the TransAlta Tri Leisure Centre’s pre-school program – which her four-year-old has attended throughout the year, like her older sister had the year before – Ashley was immediately comforted. They told her that her child had the skill down pat. In fact, the entire TLC Active Kids Preschool program is shaped around preparing young children for their first year of school. The three- to five-year-old attendees play fun games and activities while learning how to follow instructions, respect others, follow a routine and basic literacy skills like getting to know the alphabet. “The teachers are great at what they do,” Ashley, 35, says. “They have so much patience, love and understanding. And they’re always thinking of new and exciting crafts and activities inside and outside of the classroom.”

Besides attentive sitting, Ashley was impressed by the progress her daughter has made in writing. “I’ve kept my daughter’s artwork from September and compared it to June and it’s impressive how far she’s come with her printing.” Each class, the kids and teachers also spend time using different areas of the facility, which Ashley sees as an important lesson in life-long fitness. ““I love how they don’t just stay in the classroom. The teachers and kids are active all throughout the facility, including the gym, soccer fields, pool, and ice rink. As the kids go to and from the classroom, they see people working out and taking care of their bodies and they’re intrigued! What a great lesson in itself right there! My daughter will see me on the elliptical and say after, ‘Mom can I come work out with you?’ Kids absorb everything.” Plus, she says, the program times are convenient for her busy schedule as the owner of two small businesses.

17

I feel safe bringing the kids there. It’s a good environment for a family.

Even though the family lives a 45-minute drive away from the facility (and there are pre-school programs nearer to their home in Lake Isle), Ashley doesn’t mind making the commute. She has adopted a routine of working out and then running errands in town while her daughter is in class. “That’s why I love the Tri Active Kids Preschool Program. After dropping my daughter off I quickly got into a routine of working out. As parents, we are so busy taking care of our children that we forget to take care of ourselves.” The spot also offers a friendly, easygoing atmosphere that she loves. “Everyone’s friendly and willing to help – I’ve asked complete strangers to show me how to use a machine. It’s a really nice workout environment.” Even though both of her daughters have completed the program, the family still plans to visit the centre regularly to swim, skate and play hoops with their dad. “I feel safe bringing the kids there. It’s a good environment for a family.”

The Yes That Changes Everything: Olympic Athlete and TLC Ambassador Looks Inside for Inspiration

Like many kids, Stephanie LabbÊ had a ton of heroes growing up. Starting at age 11, the starting goalie for Team Canada women’s soccer team, born and raised in Stony Plain, began practicing soccer in her home town. She was fueled by her love of the game and cheered on by her supportive parents and friends.

32

DRYLAND

As she advanced further through the world of competitive soccer, eventually going on to win an Olympic bronze medal with the national women’s team in 2016, she modelled herself after famous players. She worked hard to imitate the moves and strategy that she believed made them winners. But it wasn’t until nearly 20 years later she discovered a new role model that would change her life.

That new hero? Herself “When I was young, I got caught up so much trying to be like other people – my heroes and role models. But, instead of being inspired by them, I wanted to be them,” Stephanie, 31, says. “It was great at first. But later it really took a toll on me, physically, emotionally. I was trying to be someone I wasn’t.” It was this shift towards accentuating her own unique skills and realizing she was a player worth admiring in her own right that would lead her to her highest level of performance to date. “Eight months before the Games, it was like a switch flicked,” she says. “I made a change to believe in myself, to work every day to be the best Stephanie Labbé I could be. To bring out what makes me special and not try to be anyone else.”

She says it led to a dramatic improvement

This new source of inspiration has also helped Stephanie stay on track after the games when she set her sights on a new goal: playing for a men’s professional league. “I thought, if I wanted results that no one has ever gotten, I’d have to do something no one’s ever done.” Though she made it successfully through tryouts on the Calgary Foothills men’s soccer team, the Premier Development League ultimately decided not to add a woman to its ranks. Today, she is making a final decision on joining a women’s team in Europe, while continuing to advocate for women in sports. “I’ve been told ‘no’, but I haven’t given up – I’m still pushing forward for the right to play in that league and no matter what, I know I’m making a difference for women’s soccer.” Another source of inspiration is Stephanie’s time spent in her community during the off-season. She hangs out with her family and works as an ambassador for the Trans Alta Tri Leisure Centre (TLC). Here she runs workshops for local athletes.

I thought, if I wanted results that no one has ever gotten, I’d have to do something no one’s ever done.

“I started to relax on the field and play to my top ability. I wasn’t out there trying to do what other goal-keepers were doing. It allowed me to play free, as me, not trying to be anyone else. It took my playing to a whole new level.”

33

“It’s my way to give back to the community that has given me so much,” she says. “This is my way of being a part of these young kids’ lives and give them the same opportunities I was given to pursue my goals.” She loves to train and exercise at the centre too and often brings her young niece and nephew along.

“I’m so much more focused on the journey than the end results,” she says. “My focus is on the daily processes. Whether I achieve it or not, as long as I put in the work, I will have no regrets in how hard I tried for it. That’s the successful part for me.”

“There are so many things going on at once. You can be up on the track running and looking down and watching young soccer stars in the making. I just love that!”

Think like an athlete: Stephanie tips for success on and off the field

She adds, “There are so many people around that just want to help. It’s a welcoming community environment.”

1. TRY EVERYTHING Being open to new things is how Stephanie came upon her love of soccer when she was young. For adults looking for something new to try – for themselves or their children – she recommends exploring the TLC website to see what different activities are out there. Commit to something small – a single class or one semester of a program and see what sticks.

Places like the TLC give kids the chance to try different activities, a platform that every budding athlete needs, Stephanie says. “You can’t force kids to like things. But you can give them an opportunity to try new things, to pursue their own dreams, what interests them. That’s what the centre gives them – that opportunity to go out, try something new and possibly fall in love with something they’ve never thought of.”

It’s a motto worthy of a true role model.

It was this freedom that allowed Stephanie to find to soccer at a young age.

2. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF These days, people think Stephanie’s ‘made it.’ But, she says, even as one of the best goal-keepers in the world, things can still get tough. Still, she continues to value herself high. “No matter how many ‘nos’ you get, there’s going to be one ‘yes’ and that’s going to change everything.”

“I grew up playing hockey, wanting to be just like my big brother. But my girlfriends were playing soccer and eventually they convinced me to give it a try.”

3. LOVE WHAT YOU DO If you’re doing what you love, and having fun doing it, nothing can hold you back. Stephanie says.

After trying one season with her friends, she never looked back. She went on to play for the Spruce Grove Saints, then later played professionally in Sweden and the United States, as well as being a staple on the Women’s National Team since the age of 21.

“If I could go back and talk to my younger self, I would tell her not to believe anyone who’s saying you’re not good enough or fast enough. If you really do love something, there’s nothing that can stop you from achieving what you want.”

Today she keeps a simple daily goal: to work every day to be a better person than the day before. Doing this helps her enjoy working towards achievements instead of just focusing on glory.

4. STAY POSITIVE. If you’re having a low-energy day or feeling unmotivated, Stephanie recommends exercise to boost your spirits. “Go for a walk, work out, head to the gym with a friend…” She also meditates every day to relax, reflect and learn more about what makes her unique, inside.

There are so many things going on at once. You can be up on the track running and looking down and watching young soccer stars in the making. I just love that! 34

Sport for Life and Physical Literacy You may notice reference to Sport for Life and physical literacy throughout the descriptions for our Children and Youth programs. The Sport for Life Society is recognized as the global experts on Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) and physical literacy development in Canada. TLC staff and programs incorporate the LTAD age-appropriate pathway into sports by introducing fundamental movement skills and sporting skills in a progressive manner. Just like learning your ABC’s before learning to read and write, physical literacy is about building a movement foundation to create active, flourishing adults. The positive learning environment in TLC programs helps build motivation and confidence to help children on their lifelong journey to be physically literate.
