WELCOME

Message

HELLO FALL 2017!

A Note from Our GM, Graig Walsh What a fantastic summer at the TLC! This summer was packed with exciting day camps, community sports and family fun at the facility! And while our members and guests were enjoying their best summer ever, our team was hard at work sprucing up the TLC. We are thrilled to announce a few fun projects in the works, including:

- WORK WITH STEPHANIE LABBÉ! Hailing from Stony Plain, AB, Stephanie Labbé is a professional athlete whose hard work and dedication has brought her as far as the 2016 Rio Olympics, where she took home a bronze medal with the Canadian Women’s National Soccer Team. Flip to page 6 to learn about her work with the TLC!

- NEW LANDSCAPING! As part of our plan to spruce up the TLC, we are completing a significant landscaping redevelopment to the front of the building. These great projects will redefine our external landscape and provide new features for members and guests. We hope you enjoy the finished product!

- LOCKER ROOM RENOS! After 15 years of incredibly high traffic levels, our change rooms are certainly starting to show their age. This September, we will embark on a revitalization project aimed at improving the locker room experience for members and guests. During our annual aquatic shutdown, we’ll be making substantial upgrades to the men’s, ladies and family aquatic change rooms (including more personal lockers!). It’s going to be another fun-filled season at the TLC, and we can’t wait to bring it all together with a fresh new look.

Don’t forget! Realty Executives Aquatic Complex will be CLOSED September 5 to September 22

Meet

STEPHANIE LABBÉ, 2016

Olympic Bronze Medallist and TLC Member

6

At the TLC, we take tremendous pride in our local athletes who continue to crush goals with hard work, dedication and confidence. Stony Plain’s own Stephanie Labbé, a goalkeeper for the Canadian Women’s National Soccer Team, is the definition of a hometown hero. Since earning a bronze medal with Team Canada in the 2016 Rio Olympics, 30-year-old Stephanie has continued to shine as a keeper for the Washington Spirit in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) while attending Canadian national training camps in the off-season. For The Love Of The Game For Stephanie, athletics have always been her passion. Growing up, she insisted on trying any and every sport the Tri-Municipal Region had to offer, from hockey to soccer indoors and outdoors in Spruce Grove. “I grew up on an acreage outside of Stony Plain, so I have to give my parents a lot of credit for driving me to and from all my practices,” Stephanie says. “I played every sport and tried everything out, but once I started playing keeper I fell in love with the position.” So, when did Stephanie’s love of the game translate into Olympic ambitions? Flashback to the 2002 FIFA U-19 Women’s World Championship, which was hosted in Canada that year. “I remember going to one of the games at Commonwealth Stadium,” she explains. “I was 15 at the time, and watching those girls represent Canada in a crowd with 60,000 people really opened my eyes. Picturing myself playing in that scenario fueled my passion to take that next step.”

7

An Advocate for Mental Wellness A huge part of Stephanie’s success comes from her ability to keep her mind sharp and tune out the pressure that comes with representing Canada on the field in front of thousands of fans. That kind of mental awareness is something she says can’t be overlooked when it comes to training. “It took me a while to figure out the mental side of the game, but it is so important and often overlooked,” she says. “Confidence and positive self-talk are huge. You can train physically, but if you’re feeling the pressure and your mind can’t tune out what’s going on around you, your skill level isn’t going to matter.” So, how does Stephanie do it? Yoga, meditation and visualization. Throughout the off-season, she says she also tries to head to the mountains for a hike with her faithful pup, Rio, whenever she can.

An Ambassador for Healthy, Active Living While Stephanie’s youth athletics career flourished before the TLC’s opening in Spruce Grove, she has spent plenty of time at the facility on her days off with her niece and two nephews, taking advantage of the pool, indoor fields and ice rinks. “The TLC is a great one-stop shop for everything families need to get out in the community,” she shares. “We learn so many life lessons from being active, and the more I can get involved with something promoting that healthy lifestyle for kids, the better.” As a TLC Ambassador, Stephanie is a strong advocate for healthy, active living. Through her partnership with the TLC, she hopes to inspire young athletes to pursue their own goals and ambitions with confidence. Stephanie has recently started a foundation through which she will be giving grants to kids in the Tri-Municipal Region. These grants will go towards what these children need to achieve their goals, at the TLC and beyond.

Confidence and positive self-talk are huge. You can train physically, but if you’re feeling the pressure and your mind can’t tune out what’s going on around you, your skill level isn’t going to matter. 8

We want our local athletes to train to be the best they can be right here at home in their community. For that reason, the TransAlta Tri Leisure Centre has been hard at work developing leading-edge strength and conditioning programs for young athletes – the Athlete Development Project.

OUR APPROACH The TLC does not believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to Athlete Development. We know that collaboration between sport coaches, athletes, parents and TLC Sport Conditioning specialists is essential to developing programs that meet the needs of our local athletes and teams. The Athlete Development Project programs are built on age-appropriate exercises with a focus on fundamental movement skills and overall physical literacy. We believe that establishing proper movement patterns is essential for creating an athletic base for future development. Athlete Development programs include general physical preparation (GPP) as well as strength, power and speed development. We believe that every athlete has a responsibility for self-maintenance. Therefore, athletes participating in the Athlete Development Project will be introduced to strategies for both activation and recovery to ensure long-term health and performance.

OUR PROGRAMS triACTIVE ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT CAMP (10–13 years)

$130 members/$155 non-members The Athlete Development Camp will introduce young athletes to ageappropriate training concepts. The professional coaches will introduce safe and efficient movement patterns that will serve as a foundation for future athletic development. (10 classes)

$140 members/$170 non-members Speed is critical to athletic performance. The TLC has teamed up with Ernie Mckenzie, a top-level Canadian sprint coach to deliver an eightweek speed camp. Athletes will be introduced to training concepts focused on developing explosive speed and power.

and Physical Literacy You may notice reference to Sport for Life and physical literacy throughout the descriptions for our Children and Youth programs. The Sport for Life Society is recognized as the global experts on Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) and physical literacy development in Canada. TLC staff and programs incorporate the LTAD age-appropriate pathway into sports by introducing fundamental movement skills and sporting skills in a progressive manner. Just like learning your ABC’s before learning to read and write, physical literacy is about building a movement foundation to create active, flourishing adults. The positive learning environment in TLC programs helps build motivation and confidence to help children on their lifelong journey to be physically literate.
