Getting triACTIVE with JEN TELFER

When it comes to sports and wellness at the TLC, Jen Telfer is truly a jack of all trades. From physical literacy and children’s programming to athlete development and coaching, Jen has a passion for educating members and guests on the benefits of regular physical activity.

Staff Spotlight Jen has been a part of the TLC team for six years, first as the Children and Youth Program Coordinator, and now as the Wellness Supervisor and Athlete Development Project Director. After an energizing walk with her dog and a healthy dose of coffee to jumpstart her day, Jen heads to the TLC to oversee an extensive portfolio of programs and services running throughout the day. Her daily routine typically involves checking in with Program Coordinators, connecting with Community Partners, making sure operations are running smoothly and planning for on-going projects. When Jen isn’t supervising, her triACTIVE lifestyle involves a mix of workout routines whether it’s yoga, strength training, running or playing volleyball. She also heads the programming for the Athlete Development Project, which involves custom off- and in-season training for individuals and teams.

Physical Literacy for Life

Jen adds that a drop-off in sports participation commonly occurs between the ages of 10-12, so the hope is that promoting physical literacy earlier on will keep them feeling motivated to move as time goes on.

Getting triACTIVE at the TLC As part of her advocacy for physical literacy at the TLC, Jen oversees program development for children and youth to ensure classes are designed to have a progression based on age and abilities. “Each class has its own focuses and results,” she says. “We have been working hard with the staff to create unique lesson plans that create those desired outcomes.” For example, Jen says the dryland classes offer a nice balance to swim lessons, giving children the confidence to move in all different environments.

Jen’s life-long love for sports and wellness stems from over 15 years of coaching, for which she has a Masters in Coaching from the University of Alberta. Through her education, she was introduced to physical literacy and how it helps kids keep moving as they get older. “Physical literacy is a life-long journey for everyone; there is no destination,” she says. “The goal at the TLC is about creating a fun and welcoming environment for children to be active and learn physical skills in age-appropriate progressions.” According to the Canadian Health Measure Survey (2007-2011), there is only a 10% chance a girl will be physically active at age 25 if she doesn’t participate in physical activity by age 10. This staggering statistic inspires Jen to positively encourage kids to get active and never stop playing as they get older.

The goal at the TLC is about creating a fun and welcoming environment for children to be active and learn physical skills in age-appropriate progressions.

Meet Jen Telfer! Her roles at the TLC include Wellness Supervisor and Athlete Development Project Director.

Sports for Personal Development Jen, who has always been involved with sports growing up, recognizes the many benefits of participating in individual and team athletics that go beyond physical health. Her first team sport was all-girls soccer, as it allowed her to feel comfortable competing in her own gender. From there, her parents let her try every sport under the sun until she ultimately fell in love with volleyball. From playing competitively to coaching the U18 Team Alberta women’s volleyball team at the 2017 Canada Summer Games, Jen says her experiences have allowed her to gain confidence, build leadership skills and practice teamwork. “Playing a sport is not just about the skills or the strategy,” she adds. “It’s about things like sportsmanship, integrity and communicating effectively. Those are the things that are going to allow you to do great things.” To learn more about how physical literacy and athlete development, visit trileisure.com or say hello to Jen next time you see her friendly face at the TLC!

Check out our physical literacy graphic on page 35, which helps to give parents a better idea on how each class can help give their child the positive encouragement to get active! 19

We want our local athletes to train to be the best they can be right here at home in their community. For that reason, the TransAlta Tri Leisure Centre has been hard at work developing leading-edge strength and conditioning programs for young athletes – the Athlete Development Project.

OUR APPROACH The TLC does not believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to Athlete Development. We know that collaboration between sport coaches, athletes, parents and TLC Sport Conditioning specialists is essential to developing programs that meet the needs of our local athletes and teams. The Athlete Development Project programs are built on age-appropriate exercises with a focus on fundamental movement skills and overall physical literacy. We believe that establishing proper movement patterns is essential for creating an athletic base for future development. Athlete Development programs include General Physical Preparation (GPP) as well as strength, power and speed development. We believe that every athlete has a responsibility for self-maintenance. Therefore, athletes participating in the Athlete Development Project will be introduced to strategies for both activation and recovery to ensure long-term health and performance.

OUR PROGRAMS triACTIVE ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT CAMP (10–13 years)

$130 members/$155 non-members The Athlete Development Camp will introduce young athletes to ageappropriate training concepts. The professional coaches will introduce safe and efficient movement patterns that will serve as a foundation for future athletic development. Ten classes.

triACTIVE SPEED CAMP (13–17 years)

$104 members/$120 non-members Speed is critical to most sports. Join TLC speed coaches to learn to transfer efficient movement patterns into improved athletic performance. Athletes will be introduced to training concepts focused on developing explosive speed and power. Eight classes.

AN ATHLETIC MIND: Sports & Mental Wellness with Stephanie Labbé

Olympic medalist and proud TLC member, Stephanie Labbé , recently gave a talk to coaches in the Tri-Municipal Region about the importance of addressing mental health with young athletes.

An advocate for mental health in the athletics industry, Stephanie stresses the importance of being self-aware amid the pressure to perform. “It’s important to be confident in yourself, believe in yourself and be in control of your own thoughts,” she says. “Because in tough times, when the pressure and scrutiny are high, you will be able to shut out the distractions and freely focus on your own game.”

Focus on Yourself As a professional athlete, Stephanie has dealt with all kinds of pressure throughout her career. When the world is watching you perform, it’s natural to carry the weight of everyone else’s expectations, which is why she has found a few techniques to keep her grounded on and off the field.

I always focus on my breath and what’s in my control,” she explains. “I do a lot of meditation to train my brain and control my thoughts, which helps me stay focused on my work ethic and individual strengths in high-pressure situations. Another way to tune out the pressure is to make your own personal goals and push your limits without the influence of others. Stephanie says setting small goals and attaching them builds confidence in young athletes by disregarding everyone else’s expectations; Focus on your own improvement above all else.

Playing sports professionally takes up a tremendous amount of time including on-and off-season training, practicing and gameplay. When she gets a break, Stephanie unwinds by making time for what’s most important: herself and her mental health. “Yoga is what I do to relax my mind and body, whether I go to a studio, listen to a podcast or follow a YouTube video at home,” she shares. “It’s a great way to stretch and recover, while also quieting my brain. I always feel better after, knowing I did something positive for myself.”

An Exercise for Athletes Young athletes tend to put a lot of pressure on themselves to perform, and through her own experiences, Stephanie has found an exercise that can help them transform that pressure into focus. She suggests bringing athletes together and having them list what they’re good at, their strengths or what sets them apart from others on a piece of paper. Once they have a list of 15-20 things, separate them into the following categories: • TECHNICAL • TACTICAL • PHYSICAL • MENTAL From there, coaches should have their athletes narrow down the list to 1–2 per category to make a short, concise list they can use as a reference; these qualities make up who the athlete is and what they bring to the game. Stephanie says reminding athletes to focus on these skills can help them put their energy towards personal development rather than buckling under the pressure to be number one. With winter sports in full swing across the Tri-Municipal Region, we at the TLC want all young athletes to feel comfortable and confident whether they are playing on a team or individually. Check out our yoga classes for ages 12+ on page 28!
