GivingTuesdayiscominguponTuesday,December3rd. Manywilltakethetimetodonatedotolocal non-profitorganizationsinourcommunityandacrossthenation. Thisisawonderfulwaytoshowyour supportforacausethatisnearanddeartoyourheart,butwealsourgeyoutodoyourduediligence beforeyoudonate!
Therearemanywell-meaningpeoplewhostartupanon-profitorganizationtoserveaneedintheir community,however,theymaynot(yet)bealegitimateorlegallyformednonprofit InOregon, nonprofits,includingHOAs,aregovernedbytheOregonDepartmentofJusticeforcharitableactivities. Whenanybusinessforms,theyshouldbetakingthefollowingstepstolegitimizetheirbusinessstanding:
BOItotoensurecorporatetransparencyrequirementsaremettoavoidfees.
Whenyoustartanonprofit,youarerequiredtofiletheabovedocumentsinadditiontoArticlesof Incorporation,Bylawsandboardmemberinformation,plusafilingfeewiththeIRS. Afterreviewthatmay takeseveralmonths,theIRSwillsendtheorganizationanofficialletterstatingwhethertheirapplication hasbeenaccepted. Ifaccepted,theywillalsoprovidethenonprofit’sofficialEINatthesametime.
YoucaneasilyresearchwhetherabusinessislegitimateandingoodstangingbygoingtotheSecretary ofState’swebsitetosearchforthenameofthebusinessorbythebusinessowner.
YoucanalsousetheIRS’snon-profitsearchtooltomakesurethata“nonprofit”isalegitimate501(c)3 charitablenonprofitthatisregisteredwiththeIRS IftheyareNOT,youmaynotbeabletodeductyour donationstothatorganizationfromyourtaxes.

Therehavebeenafewquestionsregardingourprepaideventticketprogram.
Inthepast,theChamberallowedmemberstopre-payforticketstoourevents. Thisprocessbecame cumbersomeanddifficulttomanagebyoutdatedmanualmethods,notonlytotrackthemall,butto continuallyberequiredtomaintainarunninginventoryandcheckthemagainstattendeesatevents.
Arecentauditalsofoundthatmanymemberswerenotusingtheirtickets Thisincludesmemberswho receivedpre-paideventticketsasapartoftheirupdgradedstatus
Memberswhohadunusedpre-paidticketswerenotifiedinSeptember,OctoberandNovemberabouthow manyticketstheyhadremainingandwereencouragedtousethosebytheendofthisyear. Theintent wastoencourageattendanceandtouseupanyremainingticketssowecancloseoutourbooksbyyear end.
TheChamberMatedeveloperiscreatingaprocessatourrequesttohelpusmanagethisprogramonthe backend. Startingin2025,anyupgradedmemberswhohaveprepaidticketsasapartoftheirUpgraded MembershiplevelwillbeabletouseacodewhentheyRSVPwhichwillautomaticallyspenddowntheir availabletickets. Wewillnot,however,beofferingprepaidticketstothegeneralmembership.
Thegoodnewsis,withthenewChamberMatesystemthatallChambermemberbusinesseswere migratedintobackinAprilthisyear,youcannowpurchaseandpre-payforeventticketsatanytime!
