A message from our EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Despite the weather, we have all been very busy EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR behind the scenes getting our website updated, drumming up sponsors and raffle items for our Annual Gala & Auction, and doing the business of running a business that you are all familiar with!

Each month we meet with fellow Chamber Executives from all over the State and with other local resource parters from Clackamas County to share updates and see what we can do to be on the cutting edge of technology or find additional ways to serve our members. This is a great way for us to share resources and information!

Recently, you may have seen an uptick in our social media efforts which have included our work to become a local hub for information on job opportunities. We have opened up our JOB BOARD on our website to allow non-members to submit job opportunities in addition to our existing members because we are seeing an increase in social media traffic with people looking for work. Getting people working again is good for all of us!

If you have opportunities available, please use our JOB BOARD to share them FREE of charge! We want to be that “go to” resource for our members to help boost economic stability here in our community and get those positions filled.

As we are making a concerted effort in this area, we are working to find ways to support our local schools and we hope to partner with Chamber Member businesses that offer site tours, job shadowing opportunities, or that may offer scholarships for students who are seeking educational opportunities in your field. Please contact us to let us know if you have such support systems in place, or would like to build those opportunities for our schools to tap into!

Later this month, I will be a guest speaker at Baker’s Prairie Middle School as a part of the AVID program which is geared toward encouraging and preparing students for training beyond high school. The Chamber will also be participating at their 2024 Career Fair on April 4th this year and encourage those of you who can, to do the same.

It would be wonderful if we could build a pool of career ready student to fill those job opportunities right here in Canby!

The Corporate Transparency Act

During the recent OSCC/WSCC Annual Conference, we were made aware by the State that the U.S. Department of the Treasury will begin to enforce the 2021 Corporate Transparency Act which created a “beneficial ownership information (”BOI”) reporting requirement” in an effort to discourage “shell companies”. Starting January 1, 2024, business owners (who own or control a company) are required to report BOI to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN).

This includes corporations (Inc.), limited liability companies (LLCs), or those otherwise created in the U.S. by filing a document with the Secretary of State (also a requirement), or foreign company doing business in the U.S. and Fines of $500 PER DAY may be assessed by the U.S. Treasury for noncompliance!

23 types of businesses are EXEMPT from this requirement. Check here for details!

If your business is registered on or after January 1, 2024, you must report BOI within 90 days.

If your business was created prior to January 1, 2024, you have until January 1, 2025 to report BOI. We are starting to see notices about this being sent by the Oregon Secretary of State’s Office to raise awareness for those who have existing businesses that are already registered with the Oregon Secretary of State.

STATE The tolling issue with the new bridge construction is still being monitored and will have a trickledown effect on Canby with anticipated traffic increases along Highway 99 (which belongs to the Oregon Department of Transportation). To get this issue on the ballot, it will take a minimum of 250,000 signatures! We are sharing this for awareness and will provide updates as we have them.

The State of Oregon ”Short” Legislative Session begins in February and runs 45 days.

Each legislator is allowed 2 bills in this session. We will be keeping tabs on bills that affect our members, our community and our region. If you hear of specific things that might affect you, let us know and we’ll add to our watch list.

Short session is looming on the horizon – we need to keep an eye on bills being submitted. Each Sen/Rep is allowed 2 bills. Primary focus of the session is the state budget. We will be watching for bills that affect our member businesses.

Legislature is also going to look hard at Measure 110 and how it could be changed to improve safety, become effective and reduce homelessness.

COUNTY We have invited Clackmas County Commissioner Ben West to our next GMC meeting to discuss impacts and concerns around Tolling, Homeless/Mental Health, and the Aurora Airport.

STIP $ (Statewide Transportation Improvement Program) - Several projects in/near Canby have been included in the STIP $ plans since approximately 2017. However, ODOT has not followed through on these projects on County Roads (S Ivy from 99E out to SE 13th Ave as well as others). It is believed, the STIP $ are now gone so these projects will not progress.

CITY The City of Canby is hosting Cultivating Canby Community Summit #3 on Wednesday, January 24th, 2024 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM at Baker Prairie Middle School located at 1859 SE Township Road, Canby. PLEASE RSVP to the City’s Economic Development Director at StickelJ@CanbyOregon.gov.

OFLA/Paid Leave Common Questions features a list of common questions and answers about how OFLA and PLO work together.

Job Protections Common Questions answers common questions about job protections under PLO. For example, employers must protect the jobs of people who take paid leave if they’ve worked for them for at least 90 days.

Use of Paid Time Off, OFLA and Paid Leave Oregon explains employee and employer rights and obligations when an employee asks for earned paid time off (personal time, for example) when the employee takes protected leave under PLO, OFLA or both.

Child Care Infrastructure Program As directed by the Oregon Legislature in House Bill 3005, Business Oregon will be working with the Department of Early Learning and Care, other state agencies and private and non-profit entities to implement a grant and loan program to provide financial assistance for Child Care infrastructure activities. Business Oregon and our partners will be conducting extensive stakeholder outreach throughout the remainder of 2023 to ensure that there is broad input into the design and implementation of the program.

The Child Care Infrastructure Program will receive $50 million of funding, with $25 million available in the spring of 2024 and $25 million available in the spring of 2025. The details of program implementation are in development and we will provide updates as we move forward.

Program development includes the process of drafting the administrative rules that guide the program and for which stakeholder input is critical.

A feedback form is available at this link. If you would like to be added to the list of stakeholders, please select the “yes” box. The form also allows you to send us specific questions about the program.

Your questions will help us develop a FAQ sheet, better understand the needs of the customer and help inform development of the program. Please, however, understand that we will not have answers to many of your questions, until we receive stakeholder input and develop administrative rules. We will do our best to answer questions and concerns and will post answers on a FAQ section of this webpage. At this time, the attached House Bill 3005 is the best resource and source of information about the Program.

The Canby Area Chamber of Commerce is here to support you when you need to get the word out about events, specials and other important information you want to share with our members. Here are some guidelines to help us help you when planning & promoting events!

Event Planning Rule of Thumb: - Minimum of 6 months ahead to plan and 3 months ahead to start advertising the event. This helps ensure you have maximum coverage and allows your audience to adjust their own plans to attend your events. Last minute planning and sharing has been shown to have disappointing results.

Submit information for our bi-monthly Your Chamber Connection newsletters that go out on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month. Please send us your event materials 1 week ahead of those days so they can be included.

Attending monthly Chamber Luncheons and Good Morning Canby events. These are opportunities for you to share fliers and event information with our members. Please make sure you share your fliers with us, either in person or via email well ahead of the event date.

Tag us in your social media posts about your events and we will share them on our Facebook and Instagram pages as well. Pro Tip: Sharing at least a week in advance will help ensure your followers will see your events in time - on the day posts don’t typically get seen until days later depending on their feeds!!!

Submit Events to our online Community Calendar! Visit our calendar HERE, not only to see what events are happening at the Chamber, but in the Canby community as well. Anyone can submit an event to the Chamber’s Community Calendar. This is also where you can RSVP for Chamber Events once you click on the event you want to attend!

Share the Details! Your event fliers should always include date, time, location, fees, activities, food/drink, contact info and don’t forget your LOGO!
