This week... From the editor It’s the most wonderful time of the year … Not only were there charming live Christmas carols at the local shops and school this week, but the Kensington Pride mango is in season. It’s my all-time favourite food, the most delicious fruit on the face of the planet, made even more desirable by its short season, exemplifying Lao Tzu’s axiom: “the flame that burns twice as bright burns half as long”. It’s redolent of my childhood in Brisbane where a prolific mango tree grew in our front yard; our family sheltering under its generous canopy, devouring fresh fruit picked straight off the branches, sticky juice running down our arms onto the grass. Ah, simple pleasures are the sweetest. Another hangover from my Queensland upbringing is the worrisome spots that frequently manifest on my pale, freckled skin. Be sure to book that annual skin check, dear readers! Continuing my weekly chronicle of reasons to be grateful, I appreciate the herculean efforts of firefighting and emergency services volunteers and personnel who continue to fight bushfires across this wide brown land, a fun night of reminiscing at the Tallagandra Hill Winery venue and accommodation launch party, meeting new people at the Canberra Ocean Racing Club Xmas party, the Psychedelic Realism exhibition at Ambush Gallery, and quiet nights at home. - Julie Samaras

No one was injured when this ACT Rural Fire Service vehicle was damaged by a tree whilst operating at the North Black Range fire near Braidwood, NSW on Tuesday 10 December. Image supplied.

Hazardous smoke descends on Canberra Smoke haze blanketed the Canberra region earlier this week, with local Air Quality Index (AQI) readings on par with metropolitan areas in China and India. These conditions have occurred as a result of smoke from bushfires burning near Braidwood and on the NSW South Coast being blown in Canberra’s direction by westerly winds. According to the World Air Quality Project, Canberra’s overall AQI on Tuesday 10 December at 8am was 170 in Civic, 169 in Monash and 180 in Florey.

ACT Health’s PM2.5 readings, which refers to atmospheric particulate matter (PM) that have a diameter of less than 2.5 micrometres, were scored at 367 at the Civic station, 364 at Monash, and 444 at Florey. PM2.5 readings over 200 are considered hazardous. ACT Health Public Health Physician Dr Vanessa Johnston said on Monday 9 December that the smoke covering Canberra was made up of very fine particles, hence the extremely high PM2.5 readings. “These particles are exceptionally fine; they’re finer than one strand

of a human hair, so they can be breathed deep within the lungs. “They’re a little bit different to dust, which is made up of coarse particles that tends to stay in the upper airways.” Dr Johnston said the smoky conditions were expected to continue until today, Thursday 12 December. She advised that groups most sensitive to these conditions, such as those with chronic lung and heart conditions or asthma, children, the elderly and pregnant women, should be avoiding all physical activity outdoors. The Education Directorate issued advice to ACT public schools that all outdoor physical activity classes were being cancelled. “Your best course of action is to avoid exposure altogether … If you’re otherwise fit and healthy, and physical activity is unavoidable, one option is to use a P2 or an N95 mask, these are available at hardware stores,” Dr Johnston said. Neither Canberra Hospital nor Calvary’s emergency department had reported a spike in presentations due to smoke haze. Dr Johnston said a rise in presentations would depend on how long the conditions last.

On Tuesday 10 December, the Bureau of Meteorology declared severe fire danger in the ACT, with the ACT ESA declaring a total fire ban on the back of temperatures being predicted to reach 38oC with hot, dry west to northwesterly winds. The North Black Range fire burning near Braidwood was under control, with crews conducting backburning operations in the area to establish containment lines. The advice from the NSW RFS was that the smoke was expected to continue to impact communities west of this fire for a number of days. At that same time the South Coast remained inaccessible via the Kings Highway, with the highway remaining closed between Braidwood and Nelligen due to backburning operations as part of the Currowan fire, burning between Batemans Bay and Ulladulla. The road closure was expected to remain in place until later in the week. The Currowan fire was larger than 80,000 hectares on Tuesday and classified as “out of control”, with conditions expected to deteriorate further. - Denholm Samaras

water, and being less reluctant to seek medical assistance. The pill testing service saw experts work closely with the festival organisers, the ACT Ambulance Service, ACT Health and ACT Policing, which Dr Olsen attributed to its success. “Our evaluation team applauds the ACT Government for showing such leadership on this issue and the open-mindedness and willingness to work with the relevant experts and services to trial this service, building the evidence base for policymaking in this space,” she said. “This really shows a potential way forward for more services of this type.” ACT Minister for Health,

Rachel Stephen-Smith, said the ANU evaluation “clearly shows pill testing is an effective health intervention” but reiterated that the ACT Government does not condone the use of illicit drugs. Ms Stephen-Smith said findings from the independent report will provide a bigger evidence base for pill testing nationally and help to inform future policy decisions for pill testing in the ACT. “We need to continue this conversation at a national level. Across the country, we have seen too many avoidable deaths at music festivals. It is obvious current processes and policies are not working and more needs to be done,” she said.

Trial shows pill testing ‘viable’ An independent review from the Australian National University (ANU) has endorsed the use of pill testing at music festivals as a way of reducing drug related harm. The review was led by Dr Anna Olsen from ANU, who examined the outcomes of the pill testing trial conducted at Canberra’s Groovin’ the Moo festival in April 2019. “This report clearly shows pill testing is viable, and under the right circumstances, provides effective, relevant and good health information to people who plan to use illicit drugs,” Dr Olsen said. “The service also provided valuable new information on the drug market at the time, detecting a dangerous substance in circulation 6

as well as finding that a high proportion of the drugs presented for testing were MDMA.” The trial tested 170 substances with more than 230 participants. During the trial, chemical tests revealed seven pills contained the potentially deadly drug N-ethyl pentylone – which was sold as MDMA. As a result of the pill testing service, every user who was told their pills contained N-ethyl pentylone dumped the drug. Other findings suggested that on leaving the service, 28% of patrons said they would use less of the drug than planned; and patrons said they would change their behaviour to reduce harm by taking less of the drug, spacing out their use, drinking

Success your way As your advisors your success lies at the heart of ours

“The Eastlake Football Club prides itself on providing an outlet for its members to involve themselves in sports and learn life skills and lessons along the way,” says Shaun. The club regularly facilitates a number of school clinics in Canberra’s south, runs Auskick clinics every Friday night and provides education programs for men and women designed to help teach the skills needed to transition into adulthood. Over the past few years Eastlake has seen significant growth in its participation numbers, now having over 700

participants with one third being female. “The growth in female numbers allowed the club to field two senior women’s teams in the 2019 season, along with girls/youth teams in under 10s, 12s, 14s, 16s and 18s,” says Shaun. Shaun goes on to say that he believes female participation in AFL will be massive and the club is actively looking at ways to ensure all players have access to the same experience with the club. “AFL has previously been male dominated and facilities reflect that, which is why the club has recently submitted a grant to update some of the facilities around Canberra, especially in regards to providing players with a gender neutral change room,” says Shaun. Another challenge the club faces due to their growth revolves around resourcing, with the required number of volunteers to run the sporting programs doubling. Eastlake is able to effectively manage their growth by creating strong partnerships with local businesses. With

Shaun saying, “It is our partnership with businesses such as MGI Joyce|Dickson that allows us to ensure participation across all levels of football including juniors, women’s, males and seniors. These partnerships ensure we can deliver on future initiatives and continue to provide a healthy outlet to the Canberra community.” When asked why it was important for MGI Joyce|Dickson to partner with Eastlake, Lorin Joyce managing Partner said, “it is important for MGI to partner with Eastlake due to their dedication to the community. For a number of players the club is their second home and this family vibe is felt by not only the players but the Eastlake employees and external business partners. The club has created an atmosphere that allows us to feel part of something bigger than just AFL, it allows us to feel part of their community,” says Lorin. MGI Joyce|Dickson is a proud sponsor of the Eastlake Football Club and looks forward to continuing to grow with the club in the coming years. As one of Canberra’s premier sporting clubs, Eastlake Football Club has built itself a reputation as an all-inclusive sports club since its inception in 1926. The Eastlake club exists “to provide an opportunity for all young males and females to participate in the game of AFL,” says General Manager Football Shaun Young. The club also goes beyond simply focusing on AFL and is committed to the health and wellbeing of its members.

capital hill The Prime Minister plays Canberra’s Christmas Grinch ne of Scott Morrison’s most experienced back benchers is very worried about government service delivery. And he told Scott Morrison so in a frank meeting recently. Simply put, he told his boss, “you can’t keep downsizing the public service and meet the minimum standards of service people need and expect”. The Public Sector Union says that 19,000 jobs have been cut from the sector since the coalition has come to government. Labor’s ACT Senator Katy Gallagher says 9,000 have gone from Canberra, “3,000 in this year”. Her Liberal opposite, Senator Zed Seselja, is more assuring. He says the Prime Minister’s pre-Christmas massive shakeup of the public service will not see any more job losses. Scott Morrison is more circumspect. With the adroitness of a used car salesman, he says the sacking of five department heads and the collapsing of the number of government departments from 18 to 14 has “not been done as a savings measure”. It has been done, he says, to better align functions in the public service and to help more Australians.

WITH PAUL BONGIORNO AM CONTRIBUTING EDITOR

But ominously he adds, he “expects, frankly all departments’ secretaries to be realising maximum efficiencies … And whatever decisions they take over the next 12 months, two years, five years, they’ll take those decisions. They’re not decisions the government takes”. Voters may not see it that way. No wonder hundreds of Canberra families will spend an anxious Christmas ahead of the 1 February startup date for the new arrangements. The head of the Prime Minister’s department, Phil Gaetjens, has already flagged a “loss of back office jobs”. At issue is not the government’s prerogative to organise the public service in the best way it believes it will deliver its policies. Bob Hawke did it, something Morrison reminded everyone at his news conference. A veteran of Hawke’s public service re-arrrangement says such upheavals are never easy or painless. And he says new multi-minister departments create a lot of confusion and administrative log jams as lines of authority, human resources issues and

different technology systems collide. The men and women who won’t be sweating the Christmas break will be the government’s own ministers. They all get to keep their jobs and that includes the biggest trouble-magnet of all, Angus Taylor. Morrison seems oblivious to his minister’s living in an alternative truth universe. The only explanation of the Prime Minister’s tolerance of Taylor is the reality that he governs with a majority of just one. Julia Gillard found when she was in minority, weighing up the survival of the government against cutting an embarrassment loose is no easy choice. Morrison, however, is promising whatever pain public servants are about to suffer will be to the gain of better service delivery for Australians who deal with government agencies. So the test will be eliminating robodebt victims, eliminating aged care and disability service waits, and someone at Centrelink answering the phone. No more 48 million unanswered calls. That would be a nice Christmas gift – next year.

Summernats co-owner Andy Lopez said an eighth-mile drag strip at EPIC would consolidate the future of the event here in Canberra long term. Photo: Denholm Samaras.

Summernats organisers want drag strip at EPIC Next to Floriade, it’s one of Canberra’s longest running annual events you can set your watch to. Back cutting its 33rd lap through EPIC, Summernats rolls into town from 2 to 5 January, as more than 100,000 spectators are expected to join up to 2,000 entrants for a high-

octane long weekend. Off the back of signing a fouryear deal that will keep the event in Canberra until 2023, Summernats co-owner Andy Lopez said an eighth-mile drag strip at EPIC would consolidate the future of the event here in Canberra for the long term.

“The automotive festival industry is going really well; we’re now a $32 million event for the ACT over the four days, which is a mix of visitation and automotive business that takes place. “We’re always looking for things to make this event bigger and better … we’d love to see over the next couple of years an eighthmile drag strip put into this venue; it would be an absolute game changer for this event. “It would cement our future here in the ACT as a sustainable business economically and also to make this event unlike anything that’s seen in not just Australia but in the world,” Mr Lopez said. Chief Minister Andrew Barr said he would take the suggestion for an eighth-mile drag strip on notice. “I’ll need to have a look at the plan and see where we could possibly locate it. “We’ve got to obviously meet

a number of different user group requirements, but Summernats is one of the major events that’s held at the venue, so it’s one we’ll consider seriously.” The Government is currently undertaking detailed masterplan work for the entire EPIC precinct. “To be clear, it will remain an exhibition and events precinct,” Mr Barr said. “Some of the customer feedback, not just from Summernats but all of the other events held here, has been particularly focused on wanting more shade, better toilet amenities and the like, so we’ve been investing in improving facilities in that regard.” Mr Barr said with suburban development to take place around the precinct in the coming years, they will accordingly position any future events infrastructure so as to cause minimal disruption for nearby residents. - Denholm Samaras

Six charged for Bimberi incident ACT Policing has charged six teenage males in relation to an incident that occurred at the Bimberi Youth Justice Centre on 26 August 2019. About 7pm, police responded to reports of a disturbance at the Centre. The incident involved several young people and staff. Following investigations, police have charged six males with a range of offences,

including: assault, conspiracy to escape, aggravated robbery, possess offensive weapon, obstruct territory official, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, affray, and possess stolen property. Five teenagers will face the ACT Children’s Court in December 2019 and February 2020. One has already appeared before court.

Gel blaster warning ACT Policing is reminding the public that replica firearms known as gel blasters or gel ball blasters are illegal in the ACT. They are classified as prohibited firearms in the ACT as they mechanically function as air guns and closely resemble other military-style firearms. Any person found in possession of a gel blaster may be charged under the Firearms Act 1996, which 10

carries a penalty of up to 10 years imprisonment. It is also an offence to sell gel blasters in the ACT. People in possession of a gel blaster should surrender them to the ACT Policing Exhibit Management Centre, 86 Vicars Street, Mitchell. Anyone with information about the possession or sale of illegal firearms is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

news Nutrient loads key to preventing algal blooms A new report suggests Lake Tuggeranong has significant water quality issues with more work required to address algal blooms. The Lake Tuggeranong Research Project: Research Findings and Recommendations, by the Institute for Applied Ecology at the University of Canberra, suggests controlling the lake’s nutrient load as key to its overall health. The report says: “To control algal blooms in Lake Tuggeranong by nutrient limitation requires substantial reductions in nutrient loads both from external and internal sources. Priority should be given to reducing the amount of nutrients entering the lake during storm events, particularly from Kambah creek. In the longer term, the internal sources of nutrients in the lake will have to be addressed

… However, until the catchment sources can be controlled, there is little value in addressing the internal loads.” In addition to recommendations to help prevent algal blooms, the report also suggests better community education on the appropriate use of the stormwater system, as well as further investigation to inform actions on algae control options. ACT Minister for Environment and Heritage, Mick Gentleman, said the findings have provided government with “a better understanding of water quality challenges and will help us develop cost-effective, evidence-based solutions”. “The lake is an important area for the Tuggeranong community for recreation and socialising. I’m committed to addressing algal

blooms so Lake Tuggeranong can be used year-round.” Meantime, community lake user groups will be doing a clean-up of Lake Burley Griffin by land and water on Sunday 15 December. “I know that most Canberrans care about this iconic resource. However, the lake is still full of rubbish, and we can’t blame anyone but ourselves for this. We’d love for more people to get involved with this clean-up effort this year,” said Volunteer Clean-up Coordinator, Tammy Ven Dange. This is the second year a cleanup has been held, with last year’s effort collecting 74 bags of rubbish plus a number of plastic and industrial items that were too big to fit in the bags. Misleading ads prove costly The ACT Supreme Court has fined Your Local Plumbing Group Pty Ltd $100,000 for making false and misleading representations, and engaging in misleading and deceptive conduct, in relation to the advertising of plumbing services in the ACT. The Court found that between 2016 and 2018 the company published advertisements under multiple business names in the Yellow Pages, the Chronicle, and the Canberra Weekly, falsely

advertising that services were supplied by businesses that were unrelated to Your Local Plumbing Group. The company also falsely represented it had been in operation in Canberra for at least 25 years when it had only been in operation since 2015 at the earliest. The Court also ordered that Your Local Plumbing Group’s sole director and shareholder, Mr Shameer Khan, pay a $30,000 penalty.

Lola Taylor (right) describes her winning san choy bau recipe to Healthy Eating Hub’s Kate Freeman at the Little Chef cook off at Canberra Southern Cross Club, Woden.

Local chefs ‘cook off’ to show off their culinary skills! Three incredible local chefs have emerged as the winners of this year’s Great Canberra Cook Off and their recipes will feature in the ACT Health’s Healthier Choices Canberra e-cookbook. Winner of the Little Chef category Lola Taylor created a sensational vegetable loaded san choy bau. Sebastian Connor won the Teen Chef finale with delicious lettuce cups packed with protein and vegetables. In the Stripped Back Chef finale for local ‘chefs’ over the age of 18, Mary Levy battled it out to win with her mince burger wraps. This competition, which was part of the

Healthier Choices Canberra initiative, got Canberrans thinking about their favourite healthier, delicious and nutritious recipes to share with their community. The best part is, their recipe ideas are so simple and easy and just right for a quick meal at home or for a meal to take to school. Healthy Eating Hub’s Kate Freeman says tapping into the kitchens of everyday Canberrans means people can relate more to the ideas, the food choices and the recipes being showcased.

“A really easy way to get people choosing healthier foods is to provide recipes that anyone can create and our local chefs have shown Canberrans how easy it is to prepare a healthier option for family and friends to enjoy,” Kate says. “In addition, school and sporting canteens across the ACT can benefit from the Stripped Back recipes, which had to be geared for school and sporting canteens as part of the competition’s criteria. “As a nutritionist, I have been fortunate to work with ACT Health and their Healthier

Choices Canberra program to find creative ways to get the conversation going about making healthier choices. Why do we want to do this? Because when you look at the statistics on our eating and drinking behaviours, it’s clear we need to support each other locally and socially to create healthier opportunities for everyone.” Here are some of the stats: • In 2015, Canberrans spent nearly 60% of their food budget on discretionary foods and drinks. • Last year, 36% of children in the ACT consumed sugarsweetened drinks at least weekly. • Only 6.8 % of adults and 3.5 % of children consume enough vegetables. “So, what are discretionary foods? It’s the food and drink we should only consume occasionally, not every day. Think of those foods that are high in energy and saturated fat, with added sugars and salt, things like sugary biscuits and cake, chocolate, deep-fried food and highly processed foods,” Kate says. “I know it’s hard … food choices are

influenced by our food environment, which includes shops, cafes and restaurants, sports venues, workplaces, schools and media channels. Too often these settings are dominated by unhealthy foods and drinks, which makes the healthier choice difficult.” Too much of the discretionary food and drinks, particularly if eaten regularly over several years, is strongly associated with poor nutrition and sadly, chronic disease. Healthier Choices Canberra is all about tweaking and shifting your choices towards healthier foods and delicious recipes like those from this year’s Cook Off! What are Kate’s top tips for making

healthier choices? “Ask yourself if you can sneak a few vegetables into a meal. Make water your drink of choice. Sezer departs Raiders Aidan Sezer is set to leave the Canberra Raiders after signing a two-year deal with Huddersfield Giants in the UK Super League. The deal will see him join the Giants for the 2020 season, which means Sezer will not return to the Raiders for pre-season training. In other player news, the Raiders have officially re-signed halfback Sam Williams on a new two-year deal which will see him remain with the club until the end of the 2021 season. Williams was offcontract at the end of 2019 but has retained a spot in the Raiders roster for two more years after strong performances for both the Raiders NRL side and feeder club Mounties this season. Melbourne Storm centre Curtis Scott has also agreed to a four-year deal with the club starting next year. Summer holiday fun in the sun – enjoy the water anywhere As school holidays fast approach, Canberra families are planning their getaways up the coast, to the river or by the pool to cool down by the water. Kingswim Canberra Area Manager and mother of two, Natalie Fletcher, says her family love spending long summer days on the beach. “We travel to the coast in summer to spend time with my parents in beautiful Tuross Head,” she says. “Whether your family heads to the beach like mine, or relaxes by the pool, water safety and transferrable skills that can be used in any body of water are crucial in summer.” To ensure the littlest member of the family can join in on the summer

fun, and the biggest member of the family has peace of mind, Kingswim has compiled its tips for a safe and fun summer: • Lessons – try to complete at least one full term of lessons before any swimming trips. If not possible, try Kingswim’s Fast Track to catch up and refresh skills before going away. • Skill level – ask your child’s teacher for an update on their swim skill level before going on holidays and if there’s anything you can practise while away. • Confidence – check in with your child about their confidence levels in the water and refresh

water safety tips specific to your holiday destination – the beach, a pool or river. • Support – if your child lacks confidence in the water, be supportive and encouraging to ensure you can both have fun and enjoy the water together. • Communication – let friends and family know your child’s ability. This will help children enjoy the water within their limits and means extra eyes watching out for safety and signs of trouble. Natalie says the best part of summer holidays is seeing her kids and others grow their confidence in the water.

“Children who put their skills from lessons into practice in different environments such as the ocean or rivers come back from summer holidays excited, confident and hungry to continue their lessons. “The summer months are a fantastic time for parents too, as they get to see firsthand the improvements in their child’s development and the hard work of lessons paying off – giving them peace of mind and allowing them to enjoy a fun, relaxing holiday.” For more information on Kingswim programs and water safety tips, please visit kingswim.com.au

GIVIT donation of the week: Philosophy books

An organisation that offers free university-level education to older adults has requested for books on philosophy. The students are adults who have experienced setbacks in their life, and have put a pause on their education. Often these individuals have to take up fulltime jobs to provide for their families and are forced to let their education take a backseat. Now, these students are studying philosophy for semester 1 (2020) and will find your donations of used philosophy text books really useful to take home for reference. These philosophy books (with a focus on ethics) will form part of a small library of resources that the students will appreciate. Items can be dropped off or posted. To donate, visit givit.org.au/items-needed, search ‘philosophy’ and select requests located in ACT. After you pledge the item, you will be contacted by the relevant charity to arrange pick-up or drop-off.

Share your community event. Email news@canberraweekly.com.au with ‘HYH’ in the subject field. Deadline is 10 days prior to Thursday edition date.

Fish and Seafood Tips

• A fi rm bladder area is the best indicator of a fresh whole fish. Please note that contact with ice can dull the eyes of whole fish, even when very fresh. • Fresh fish should have a pleasant fresh ocean smell. • Never store fillets in direct contact with ice. Always remove packaging, cover and refrigerate. Cook and eat within two days. The fi rmness of uncooked prawns can be an indicator of freshness. However, some species are naturally softer than others. Uncooked prawns should be stored in a bowl of ice and water, in the fridge. The ice and water should be changed daily. Cook and eat within two days. Always defrost fish and seafood in a covered bowl, in the fridge. Cover Oysters and Smoked Trout with wet paper, then seal in a container or with wrap and refrigerate. Caution: Even ‘boneless’ fish may contain bones. Take care before eating and check carefully before feeding to children.

Aussie Christmas

This week, CW is feeling festive! To celebrate, food writer Libby Kimber brings you two Aussie Christmas classics with a twist.

Prawn toast Recipe developed by Bernd Brademann, from Three Mills Bakery’s Beyond Bread and Butter by Zoe Young, Bernd Brademann, Louis Couttoupes and Kit Carpenter. Prawn mix 300g green (raw) prawn meat

Iced VoVo trifle Image and text from Bake Australia Great by Katherine Sabbath, photographer Jeremy Simons, Murdoch Books RRP $39.99.

Serves: 20 Jelly layer 2 x 85g packets raspberry jelly Raspberry marshmallow 250g caster sugar ½ cup (125ml) water 2 large egg whites 70 ml warm water 1½ Tbsp powdered gelatine 1 cup (150g) frozen raspberries, thawed and puréed 1 tsp vanilla extract Pink gel food colouring (optional) ½ cup (45g) fine desiccated coconut Assembly and decoration 1 jam sponge roll (see tip) ¾ cup (200g) thick Greek-style yoghurt 300ml single (pure) cream, whipped 6 Iced VoVo biscuits, diagonally sliced 42

To prepare the jelly layer: Prepare one of the packets of jelly according to the packet instructions. Pour the jelly into a large trifle bowl and refrigerate for at least 1 hour. Prepare the second packet of jelly according to the packet instructions, using only half the quantity of water to ensure the jelly sets firm enough to hold its shape when cut. Pour the jelly into a small straight-sided dish and refrigerate for at least 3 hours. Once the jelly has set, cut it into cubes. To prepare the raspberry marshmallow: Place the sugar and ½ cup of water in a large heavy-based saucepan. Bring to the boil over high heat, without stirring. Once the syrup reaches 110°C on a candy thermometer, use an electric mixer to whip the egg whites into firm peaks. Continue cooking the syrup.

2 egg yolks 30ml soy sauce 10ml sesame seed oil 45g ginger, grated 3 sprigs spring onion, finely sliced 100ml cottonseed oil To serve 400ml vegetable oil 400g prawn mix 12 slices house sourdough, stale and thinly cut

Meanwhile, pour the warm water into a small bowl and add the gelatine.

100g black and white sesame seeds

When the syrup reaches 120°C, remove the pan from the heat and gently stir in the gelatine mixture until well combined. With the mixer on the highest speed, continue to whip the egg whites whilst carefully pouring in the hot syrup. Whip until the mixture thickens and increases in volume, but remains pourable. Add the raspberry purée, vanilla and food colouring, if using. Working quickly, pour three-quarters of the marshmallow over the set jelly. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour or until completely set.

120ml Korean soy bean paste

Pour the extra marshmallow into a small, greased straight-sided dish and refrigerate for at least 1 hour. Once set, cut into cubes and roll in the coconut. To assemble and decorate: Cut the jam roll into 2.5cm thick slices and arrange them around the side of the trifle bowl on top of the raspberry marshmallow layer. Spoon the yoghurt into the centre of the trifle, inside the border created by the jam roll slices. Cover the top of the trifle with large dollops of the whipped cream. Arrange the jelly cubes, raspberry marshmallow cubes and Iced VoVo biscuits on top of the trifle.

120ml Chinese black vinegar

Pat the prawn meat dry with a paper towel and place in a food processor with egg yolk, soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger and spring onion. Blend on high for 1 minute. Christmas baking In the way of more traditional Christmas fare, you can’t go past a fabulously festive Christmas cookie.

Stained glass cookies Image and text from New York Christmas Baking by Lisa Nieschlag and Lars Wentrup. Murdoch Books RRP $35. Makes: about 60 300g plain flour ¼ tsp baking powder ¼ tsp salt 200g butter, at room temperature 120g raw sugar

our cover star

1 egg 1½ tsp vanilla extract ¼ tsp grated lemon zest About 180g hard lollies in various colours Also Flour for dusting

Combine the flour with the baking powder and salt in a mixing bowl and set aside. Beat the butter and sugar in a separate bowl until creamy, about 3 minutes. Beat in the egg, vanilla extract and lemon zest. Fold in the flour mixture in two batches to make a smooth dough. Wrap in plastic wrap and rest in the refrigerator for 2 hours. Preheat the oven to 160°C and line two baking trays with baking paper. Sort the lollies by colour and pulse to a fine powder in a small food processor. Transfer to bowls, separated by colour. Dust your benchtop lightly with flour, roll the dough out thinly, about 3mm, and use a cookie cutter to cut out shapes, such as Christmas trees, stars or baubles. Transfer the cookies onto the trays. Cut out small shapes from inside the cookies and fill these with a little of the powdered lollies. If you are planning to use the cookies as decorations, also make a small hole for the ribbon. Bake until golden brown, about 10 minutes, and leave to cool on the trays.

The five most rewatchable Christmas-adjacent movies

Getty

For some, a cherished part of their holiday season is settling in to watch their favourite film about the festive season. While some fantastic Christmas-centric movies have been made (see Home Alone, Elf or Christmas Vacation), they can also reek of Hollywood sentimentality. For the sake of this list, the focus is on what are known as ‘Christmas-adjacent’ movies; that is, movies set at Christmas time that feature the holiday, but aren’t reliant on it as the crux or conceit of the film. Telling a story that’s detached from the holiday itself lends another dimension and, by extension, rewatchability to these films.

About a Boy (2002)

Edward Scissorhands (1990)

For the sake of diversity, this list required a British movie that wasn’t Love Actually. About a Boy (M) chronicles the story of Will, a womanising underachiever played very charmingly by Hugh Grant, who befriends Marcus, the unusual 12-year-old son of his latest target. When we meet Will, he’s coasting through life, living very well off the royalties of a hit Christmas jingle his dad wrote. But meeting Marcus sets off a chain of events that sees Will teach Marcus how to be a cool kid, and Marcus help Will finally to grow up; a symbiotic intergenerational friendship for the ages.

This film was famously the beginning of a beautiful friendship between long-time collaborators, director Tim Burton and his leading man Johnny Depp. A magical modern fairy tale with gothic overtones, Edward Scissorhands (PG) was released in December 1990, right in the thick of the holiday season. A pure yet bittersweet movie dealing with themes like alienation and small town, mob mentalities, it features scenes of Edward trimming Christmas trees and carving ice sculptures, creating a beautiful backdrop for Christmas in his neighborhood.

Image: movestillsdb.com

Die Hard (1988) This movie has instigated many arguments over whether it can be correctly classified as a Christmas movie, but today is widely known as the definitive holiday action classic. Die Hard (M) sees New York policeman John McClane (Bruce Willis) arrive in Los Angeles on Christmas Eve to attend his estranged wife’s office Christmas party. From there the partygoers are taken hostage by a group of terrorists headed by Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman), setting this action classic’s wheels in motion. Die Hard laid the groundwork for many other excellent Christmas-adjacent movies that have landed in the past 30-odd years, and along with Lethal Weapon, set off the now 30-year trend of

setting action (and superhero) movies against the backdrop of Christmastime.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005) Written by Shane Black (Lethal Weapon), Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (MA) is a buddy neo-noir Christmastime comedy chock full of razor sharp satire, snappy dialogue, entertaining action and a complicated plot. Deemed responsible for resurrecting Robert Downey Jr.’s career, it opens with Downey Jr. robbing a toy store, for cash and the toy atop his child’s Christmas wish list. From there unfolds a convoluted LA murder mystery that brings together a private eye, a struggling actress and Downey Jr.’s thief character, masquerading as an actor.

Sleepless in Seattle (1993) A delightful rom-com from the golden era of rom-coms written by the queen of rom-coms, Nora Ephron (the screenwriter behind When Harry Met Sally…), Sleepless in Seattle (PG), starts on Christmas Eve, and includes holiday dinners and decorations throughout. It sees Tom Hanks team up with America’s sweetheart Meg Ryan, taking the well-crafted script to a whole other level with their undeniable chemistry, despite being on opposite sides of continental America. Honourable mentions: You’ve Got Mail, Lethal Weapon, Iron Man 3 and Batman Returns. 45

Take 5: Anna Lewondowska Circus performer Anna Lewondowska’s long and successful career has taken her just about all around the world, except for Australia – until now! She’s currently here as a cast member of Cirque Stratosphere, which is enjoying its world premiere run right here in the bush capital at the Canberra Theatre Centre, Civic, where it will be performed until 21 December; canberratheatrecentre.com.au

1

How exciting is it as a performer to premiere a work like this? It’s super exciting, it’s very new, and it’s always nice to do something different, it’s a challenge. I did Cirque du Soleil for about six years, and the concept behind this show is very different. Here we use a lot of special effects, lighting and lasers. The music is also very dynamic.

2

What has the process of rehearsing and preparing been like for you? It’s been super fun. I didn’t know anyone from the cast so it’s been super nice meeting people from all around the world. It’s a really fun process starting something in the rehearsing room and transferring it to the stage with the lighting and music.

3

ESPIONAGE IN AUSTRALIA

You perform on the CYR wheel. What drew you to that particular apparatus? Before taking up the CYR wheel I’d been doing trampoline, and I’ve been performing on the wheel for three years now. It was challenging for me because it’s a solo act, and I was used to working with a group.

4

Are there any other circus disciplines you’ll be performing in this show? There’ll be no trampoline for me (laughs). Apart from the wheel I’ll participate in a lot of choreography queues, dancing and acting. Usually I do my act, and then whatever the director asks, I participate in.

5

naa.gov.au #NAASpy

46

How did you initially get into performative gymnastics and acrobatics? Both of my parents were coaches, so I grew up at the gym. My mum didn’t have babysitters. Sometimes she jokes that before I walked I jumped. I was training every day up until the age of 16, and I was in Polish national team of trampoline. Then I joined a European circus company. After that, I joined Cirque du Soleil, then after six and a half years I had a break, had my daughter, then when I was ready I started to perform again on the CYR wheel.

Book talk Jeff Popple reviews three stunning coffee table books for Christmas. More of Jeff’s reviews can be found on his blog: murdermayhemandlongdogs.com Lost But Found by Peter Sharp Macmillan, $24.99

This gorgeous book is one of the best Christmas presents you can buy this year. Written in cooperation with the Sydney Dogs and Cats Home, it tells the stories of 40 dogs who were lost but then found by the Home and placed in new families. All the tales are touching, but probably none more so than that of Poe, a 12-year-old silk terrier cross who was badly neglected, but after receiving treatment for his illnesses was adopted by one of the vets at the Home. Adding to the book’s pleasure are some lovely photos and all royalties go to the Home to continue their good work. Highly recommended.

Stoned by Jo Wood Cassell, $39.99

This book is ideal for the aging rocker at your place. Jo Wood was married to legendary Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood for 30 years and during that time she accumulated a treasure trove of Rolling Stones memorabilia. Stoned contains over 500 never-before-seen photographs, notes and souvenirs, as well as original drawings by Ronnie and diary entries from their time together. As well as photos of the band and their families, there are pictures of a dazzling assortment of celebrities, including Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan and even George Bush! Framing the book are personal recollections by Jo and interesting behind-the-scenes anecdotes. A must for all Stones fans.

Dr Karl’s Random Road Trip Through Science by Karl Kruszelnicki ABC Books, $35

Young science nerds will delight in this entertaining book by renowned popular science guru and media personality, Karl Kruszelnicki. This large format, full colour book is fi lled with interesting science stories and facts, and amusing illustrations. Kruszelnicki covers an amazing array of topics from the colour of fat to how Amazon snoops on conversations and why spaghetti always breaks into three pieces. All the information is conveyed in a very readable and easily understood way and there are references at the end for people who want to explore a topic in more detail. A great book for kids and those interested in how the world works.

New AITSIS exhibition first of its kind Presented by the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS), Ngulla Wellamunagaa celebrates the survival, continuity and diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures as told through 16 stories that affirm ongoing connections to Country. The exhibition marks the first time AIATSIS has curated an exhibition drawing on their 1.8 million item collection, and also includes generous contributions of material from communities. AIATSIS CEO Craig Ritchie said Ngulla Wellamunagaa tells the story of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australia. “It is a story of contribution and success, a story about the resurgence of a robust living culture,” he said. AIATSIS Senior Curator Pat Williamson says the exhibition is focused on strong stories relaying

the ancestral knowledge. “The strength and vision of the Elders who, like the weathered trunks, survived though ‘hard times’ to ensure that knowledge was passed on. “The branches, now growing, reconnect and affirm the continuity and diversity of cultures today, whilst the flowers produce the seeds for the youth to continue the knowledge into the future,” said Williamson. For AIATSIS, Ngulla Wellamunagaa is more than an

exhibition; it’s about reconnecting and sharing Indigenous cultural practices with Australia and the world. Earlier this year, Ngan’gikurrungurr artist Regina Pilawuk Wilson was reunited with her Wupun – Sun mat. “I hadn’t seen this mat for a long, long time … I made this mat maybe 40 years ago … The mat found me, it’s not lost anymore,” she said. Ngulla Wellamunagaa is now open until 29 March in the NMA’s First Australians Gallery; free entry.

Now showing The Good Liar (MA15+) Back in 2009, Roy Courtnay (Ian McKellen) meets widower Betty McLeish (Helen Mirren) out on a date. We soon learn, however, that Roy is a con artist who, along with his business partner Vincent (Jim Carter), manipulates people into giving him access to their finances. McKellen and Mirren are now entertainment royalty, both having started in theatre in the early 1960s, and worked steadily since. Both have had their share in modern blockbuster movies, however this movie showcases them in their first outing together, and headlined this year’s British Film Festival. McKellen relishes being a duplicitous cad. Ultra-smooth and vulnerable when buttering up his new target, McKellen’s Roy drops the charade almost immediately 50

when out of Betty’s sights, constantly preying on a new con. It’s his lifeblood: not only his means of financial survival, but his way of enjoying life. In contrast, Mirren’s Betty is quite straightforward. Recently widowed and quite well off, Betty takes a shine to Roy in the sense of a companion only: at their age, it seems that they each have a kindred spirit within this lonely modern world. It is obvious, however, that with Mirren’s casting and the look of the 1990s inspired thriller poster, Betty must have something up her sleeve … Verdict: It follows the tropes of the con movie quite well, although the third act reveal is heavily packed. It is great to see actors of their vintage lead a modern movie. 3.5 stars. - Luke McWilliams

Skincare basics The beauty gurus at The Lab gave us some advice on taking care of your skin for summer, and all year-round. SPF: Our number one age management advice is always sun protection. Not to mention the increased risk of cancer, UV exposure will age you exponentially. Ensure you look for a product that is non-comedogenic (won’t block pores) and broad spectrum.

Olive body butter $25 200ml $40 400ml The Body Shop

Stress less: Take time and prioritise self-love this summer. A little chill is crucial for the body to “rest, digest, repair and heal”, helping us to adapt to stress in a modern society with more resilience. Get your beauty sleep! A huge amount of repair and regeneration occurs while we sleep. Love your guts: Gut health is an integral part of our physical and mental health. Have a look at your fibre intake and consider introducing natural pre and probiotics into your diet alongside essential fatty acids (the ultimate skin saviours). Don’t over-exfoliate: Focus a little more on rebuilding and strengthening your skin. Exfoliation is an important part of the process, but ensure you don’t overdo it and ensure you are feeding, repairing and building your skin at the same time. Swap UV for LED: Feeling like a little lie down on the beach? How about those same Bahama vibes but with supreme skin benefits? LED Light therapy is the ultimate in relaxation and rejuvenation.

Tips for the festive season • Put aside 30 minutes and go for a walk every day • Do not binge eat or drink; snack if you can • Drink lots of water • Only have one large meal a day • Play with the kids for 30 minutes a day • Try a sugar-free day • Head to the pool and swim • Use a bread and butter plate instead of a dinner plate for meals 5-minute festive workout • Skipping x 1 minute • Squats x 30 (1 minute) • Plank x 1 minute • Jogging x 1 minute • Bench dips x 30 seconds • Assisted push-ups x 30 seconds 5-minute stretch routine (all lying or sitting) • Seated hamstring stretch (right leg out straight and left leg bent slightly; run your hands down your right leg) hold for 30 seconds; each leg x 2 • Quad stretch (lying on your left side, grab your right ankle; bend it up to the rear and feel the stretch in the front of the right quad) hold for 30 seconds; each leg x 2 • Lying on your back with knees to your chest and arms out to the side palms facing the ground, roll your knees left to right x 1 minute

Grevillea australis, commonly known as Alpine Grevillea, has the most heavenly scented flowers.

Bossiae sericea is an upright shrub with bright yellow flowers.

Out and about: flowers of Kosciuszko National Park Kosciuszko National Park in the Snowy Mountains is as beautiful during summer as it is in the stark white of its snow-laden winter. It’s also blissfully quiet at this time of year and significantly cheaper to find accommodation! The flora of this alpine region, which is practically in our own backyard, is simply wonderful! The following are some of the plants you can see commonly growing and flowering in the Snowys during the warmer months:

1

Bossiae sericea, an erect shrub to 2m high, can be found in Kosciuszko National Park and also the ACT. This variable species grows in woodlands, heath and shrubland, including grassy areas. The solitary bright yellow pea flowers have five petals and appear during early summer.

2

Grevillea australis, commonly known as Southern or Alpine Grevillea, occur locally in Kosciuszko National Park, the Victorian Alps and Tasmania (the only Grevillea species to occur naturally there). This shrub and sometimes almost groundcover is highly variable and grows anywhere from 30cm to 2m high. It grows in heath and woodland areas with often rocky and moist soils. From December to February, it gets covered in lovely white to pale pink spider flowers, which have the most irresistible honey perfume. Interestingly, G. australis are pollinated by bees and butterflies, rather than birds. It can be grown in suitable backyard situations.

3

Hovea montana, commonly known as Alpine Hovea, is a small shrub to 50cm which occurs in NSW, Victoria, Tasmania and the ACT.

58

WITH HORTICULTURIST TRACEY BOOL traceyboolgardenwriter.com

It can be found growing in heath, woodland and grassland areas. Deep mauve to violet blue and occasionally white flowers appear singly or in clusters of two during late spring and early summer.

Hovea montana has dark mauve and occasionally white flowers which appear in late spring and early summer.

4

Olearia brevipedunculata, or Dusty Daisy Bush, is an upright shrub to 1m high and with an open habit. Its distribution is limited to alpine and sub-alpine areas in south-eastern Australia, including the ACT. O. brevipedunculata grows in Eucalyptus pauciflora (snow gum) woodland and also heath areas. The upper surfaces of the leaves are finely hairy and greyish; the undersides are also hairy and more of a whitish-grey. Butterfly attracting white flowers appear during December and January.

5

Pycnosorus spp., fondly known as Billy Buttons, is a showy perennial plant growing to approximately 50cm high and 30cm wide, which can be herbaceous in harsh climates such as ours. Silver-green foliage and longlasting button yellow flowers, which appear during spring and summer, are some of its most outstanding qualities. Billy Buttons grow in a range of habitats from sea level to the alpine regions, including Kosciuszko National Park. In backyard situations, grow them in sunny to partly shaded positions with good drainage and reliable moisture. They will tolerate occasional drying out, however. Mass plantings, foreground plantings and rockery plantings are just a few of its uses. Propagation of Billy Buttons is by division and seed; sow seed in spring once frosts have passed, either direct or in punnets of seedraising mix.

Silly season survival tips The festive season is a time for celebration. We’ve sourced some top tips to ensure your holidays are merry and bright. For a planet-friendly Christmas, you can try giving experiences rather than objects, choosing recycled or locally made presents, or making gifts yourself. You can also avoid presents that won’t last and cut down on wrapping paper by reusing paper or making your wrapping part of the gift with something like a scarf or a tea towel.

Be aware of the risks Enjoy a Christmas free from faulty goods, fraud and unnecessary stress. ACT Minister for Climate Change, Sustainability and Consumer Affairs, Shane Rattenbury, is

encouraging people, especially parents, to keep an eye out for product safety warnings. “Inflatable pool toys and toys with button batteries are regularly included in product safety warnings, so it’s important to supervise children using these types of toys over Christmas,” he says. It’s also important to be alert for scammers looking to take advantage of the Christmas rush. “Look for reviews and references, and don’t be tempted by deals that look too good to be true – because often they are.” Consumers can check the latest warnings and recalls at productsafety.gov.au

Share the spirit Christmas is a time to connect and reconnect, with research commissioned by Australia Post showing that the nation is still very much sharing Aussie cheer through cards. According to Nicole Sheffield of Australia Post, the research found more than a third of recipients feel happy and delighted to get a card, whether it’s sent in the mail or given in person. That’s good news for those doing the giving, who want the person receiving the Christmas card to feel appreciated, valued and special. While overall Aussies are giving and receiving fewer Christmas cards, the research found a proportion of 18 to

24 year olds are giving more Christmas cards than they used to and they prefer using physical cards rather than e-cards. The other big givers of personalised cards are families with pre-school or school-aged children, with 33% opting to give personalised physical cards that might feature something like a family photo and 34% a homemade physical card. These figures reflect a wider attitude identified around the importance of personal touch: 95% believe a physical card is more special to receive; 94% think a physical card is more personal and shows that the giver cares; and 84% believe a handwritten message is important.

For more information on consumer rights and responsibilities, visit act.gov.au/fairtrading

Avoid the clutter To help avoid the Christmas clutter, Jo Carmichael, decluttering specialist from All Sorted Out, shares her top three tips: Dedicate an area: Choose a room and go wild. This is your Christmas area, to be used as storage for food and gifts in the lead up to the big day. On Christmas Day or Boxing Day, encourage guests to store their extra stuff in this room – keeping the rest of your house safe from holiday madness! Have a bin ready to go: On the big day, have a bin in the area where

Furoshiki is the Japanese art of fabric wrapping and is an eco-friendly gift wrapping option.

your gifts will be unwrapped. Encourage guests to throw their paper away as soon as they unwrap their gift. This helps keep your space tidy and avoids the post-giftopening craziness. Get organised: As extra guests descend on your house, it’s important to have your space prepared in advance. Have a pre-Christmas declutter. Otherwise, this season will simply add mess on top of mess.

Building inspection blitz Officers from the Environment Protection Authority, Transport Canberra and City Services and the Suburban Land Agency are teaming up to inspect building sites in the lead up to Christmas. The officers are targeting construction sites, both residential and commercial, to ensure there is no impact on the environment or other property owners. Regulatory action

will be taken for those sites where appropriate sediment and erosion controls are not in place, or where building materials and waste are not being properly contained or managed. Fines can be applied to individuals and corporations for not meeting environmental responsibilities and for not complying with waste management or littering obligations.

Building industry hits back, launches ‘Our Place’ Major players in Canberra’s building industry have launched a campaign focusing on the “stories of developers, architects, planners, engineers and local business” in response to “negative media” coverage. Master Builders ACT, The Canberra Business Chamber and the Property Council of Australia ACT Division launched the ‘Our Place’ campaign, a website showcasing stories from a range of local builders and developers. “Our industry has felt the need to take the unprecedented step of launching this campaign to respond to the negative media that has flooded our local papers, social media, TV and radio about building quality,” said Master Builders ACT CEO Michael Hopkins. ACT Property Council executive director Adina Cirson said the sector is “critical to the diversity of the economy” and contributes more to government revenue than any other.

Both Master Builders ACT and the ACT Division of the Property Council of Australia have previously expressed concern over the ACT Government’s changes to Canberra’s building laws, and objected to Building Quality Minister Gordon Ramsay’s use of the term “dodgy” to describe builders and developers doing the wrong thing. Minister Ramsay’s office has previously told Canberra Weekly it cannot be left to “industry to reform industry”; an ACT Government spokesperson said “the Government makes no apology for protecting Canberrans from dodgy operators who use sophisticated corporate structures to avoid their obligations to fix faulty work”. Minister Ramsay has introduced a raft of changes to the Assembly, including a licensing scheme for developers and laws to prevent illegal “phoenixing” and to hold company directors personally liable for building defects.

DKSN milestone Doma’s DKSN precinct has reached two milestones, with the topping out of the mixeduse Cape building and the announcement of a 90-person childcare centre. Doma’s senior development manager, David Jameson, said that “with Cape nearing its move in date, we are very excited to start welcoming operators who will provide residents with convenient access to outstanding hospitality and services and bring new amenity to Dickson and the inner north”. Cape will be home to 102 apartments, three food and beverage outlets, five retail spaces and the childcare centre, to be operated by Wonderschool. Cape is the second building in the DKSN precinct, and is expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2020. A 13,200sqm ACT Government office building is scheduled to open in the first half of 2020. Construction on the northern site is due to start next year, and will include 200 apartments, office space and 50 retail tenancies.

Kiara Own a piece of the Inner South In the ever-popular suburb of Narrabundah, Amalgamated Property Group’s Kiara development promises a modern lifestyle in Canberra’s Inner South. “Kiara caters to all parts of the market,” says Independent Project Marketing executive director, Wayne Harriden. “Whether you’re a first home buyer, wanting a modern apartment but in an area that reminds you of your childhood home, a family who value location but want extra space to grow or those looking to downsize without sacrificing space or size.” With 158 apartments and 19 townhouses, Kiara boasts only the best inclusions, with reconstituted stone benchtops and Bosch appliances in every residence. Apartments will feature double glazed windows, generous storage space, basement parking and will be fully air-conditioned, with select apartments including ducted airconditioning systems. Townhouse residents will enjoy spacious courtyards, ducted air-conditioning systems and double car garages. Amalgamated Property Group development manager, Daniel Potts, says Kiara allows buyers to own a “piece of the Inner South” at an attractive price point, with a range of amenities to foster ‘community’ within the development. “Narrabundah has been one of the fastest growing suburbs in Canberra over the last three years as purchasers realise the value, amenity and proximity to the city,” Potts says. “With median sale prices still trailing its immediate neighbours including Griffith and Red Hill, Narrabundah appears to be on a strong growth trajectory for some years to come.” He says Kiara has been designed

to create a ‘community’, with apartments and townhouses spread over a large site with a range of amenities for residents. “Kiara’s feature design element, the ‘central village green’, is over 2,000sqm of designed common space that includes a glass encased gym, barbecue and outdoor dining area, as well as a space for residents to relax and take in the leafy surrounds of the Inner South. “The vistas from Kiara are extraordinary. Not to be built out on any side, the development has direct views of Parliament House and Black Mountain Tower to the north and a picturesque outlook over Jerrabomberra Oval.”

Passivhaus perfection Manar NSW 32 Goulburn Road Dragonfly Downs, this Passivhaus in Manar NSW, is filled with an abundance of space and light with sweeping views of the valley. McGrath Dickson sales agent Michael Fay says this house has been designed under Passivhaus principles, to ensure the highest level of energy efficiency, and has 15kW of solar power. “Automatic Vergolas cover the decks on both sides of the house, allowing winter sunshine in through the double-glazed sliding doors, opening from every room to the deck, which passively heats the polished concrete floors complete with piped hydronics in winter,” Fay says. “During summer, the Vergolas provide plenty of shade allowing cooling breezes to cross-ventilate the home. Rain sensor opening clerestory windows and soaring ceilings provide plenty of light into the rooms on the southern side of the home.” The 430sqm of living space provides a range of options for families and entertainers alike, with four large bedrooms, including a master and ensuite in one section of the house, and a one-bedroom apartment complete with kitchen and living space in another. Fay says the apartment is separated from the main residence via an enclosed breezeway, and provides flexibility to “accommodate extended family or earn an income by renting as a ‘farmstay’, Airbnb or a long term [rental]”. 64

He says this home is perfect for a range of buyers: “families with teenage kids that want the space to ride horses or motorbikes, extended families where in-laws can have their own space but integrate with the family if they want to, anybody who is looking for quality land to indulge their passion for rural pursuits, and professionals who need the space to entertain and work from home”. Set on 123 acres of farmland, this home boasts a five-bay machinery shed, two silos, inground water storage, shearing shed and sheep yards, six dams and permanent water in Bradbury’s Creek. Inside, relax after a hard day on the farm in the “massive” home theatre or the large open-plan living area, adjoining the chef’s kitchen with butler’s pantry and the large deck that takes in the views. Fay says Dragonfly Downs is “ideally located, just 45 minutes from Canberra, 32 minutes from Queanbeyan, 38 minutes from Goulburn and one hour from Batemans Bay.”

Rogue One

Monday, 9GO!, 8.30pm, M (2016)

The first standalone Star Wars movie from Disney and Lucasfilm, the action takes place before the events of A New Hope, and tells the story of resistance fighters who have united to steal plans to the dreaded Death Star. Starring Felicity Jones (pictured) and Ben Mendelsohn, this film goes into new territory as it explores the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective.

Friday

pick of the week Bowling For Columbine Michael Moore (pictured) is behind this profoundly disturbing documentary, unearthing the awful truth behind one of the most serious social issues affecting the US: guns. Using the Columbine High School massacre as a focal point of his research, the tubby everyman traces America’s firearm follies through scrutinising the media, corporations and various celebrities.

The focus continues to be on your family or loved ones this month. Passions that have been kept secret or under wraps will no longer be hidden. The full moon on the 12th warns you to take some time for rest and recuperation otherwise you’re going to be exhausted.

The full moon on the 12th indicates that something you buy online may be faulty or something is missing, so you may prefer to buy from local bricks and mortar retailers. There will be more dealings with your mother or older female relatives this month.

The full moon on the 12th indicates that Murphy’s Law is going to be in action at work and you need to be careful of something going wrong at the most inconvenient moment! At times like these, it’s important to keep calm and seek wise counsel from experienced colleagues.

LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG

There will be a re-connection with siblings and relatives, especially cousins or those on the same wavelength as yourself. The full moon on the 12th indicates a need to be careful of breaking any laws, even minor ones, as it’s highly likely you will get caught.

indicating a need to be more attentive on the roads. Whilst it may be convenient to drink and drive or to put your foot down, it’s dangerous, illegal and you’re likely to be caught, so be more accountable and responsible.

TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY The full moon on the 12th warns you to be careful of your hardearned cash. Be certain when you’re out and about that you know where your valuables are at all times. This is the time of the year when light fingers go to work!

GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE Health or legal matters could enter your private life. The full moon on the 12th falls directly in your sign and is a stress factor indicating that your home may start to resemble something of a battle ground. Do your best not to be drawn into other people’s dramas.

The full moon on the 12th indicates that you need to be careful of how you deal with your closest friends if you don’t want to lose one of them. It’s important for you to be more conscious of your speech and actions, to be honest yet tactful and considerate.

VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT The full moon on the 12th is warning to be careful of treading on the toes or egos of others at work, especially your bosses or colleagues whose opinion and reputation you value. Offer your suggestions or opinions on a work matter only if asked for them.

SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV

SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC The full moon on the 12th indicates that troubles or disagreements with loved ones are likely, especially if their demands or expectations are excessive. You might need to manage their expectations. If you are not buying a property, you might refurbish the one you’re living in.

AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB The full moon on the 12th indicates that you need to be careful of overindulging in too much alcohol or food. There may be some kind of secret relationship going on, such as keeping in touch with a black sheep relative that the rest of the family ignores.

PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR At work, you will have to work in cooperation with and possibly in charge of others, you cannot achieve much on your own. The full moon on the 12th indicates that you may need the services of your local handyman or plumber as something will need to be repaired at home.

Mother-daughter reunion

From suspect to sleuth

After the global success of the Cannes Palme d’Or-winning Shoplifters, master auteur Kore-eda Hirokazu’s wry and charming new dramedy The Truth (PG) pairs beloved Academy Award nominees Catherine Deneuve and Juliette Binoche for the fi rst time, as a celebrated actress and her estranged daughter whose tentative reunion offers an opportunity to either repair or irrevocably fracture their relationship. The Truth is a very special cinema experience: a gentle and moving exploration of reality and fiction, family, performance, and the great spectacle of life. It’s a love letter to mothers and daughters everywhere. In Palace cinemas 26 December.

High-flying PR whiz Agatha Raisin (Ashley Jensen) leaves London to retire to the quiet, picturesque Cotswold village of Carsely. Entering a local competition, she somehow fi nds herself the prime suspect of murder and by launching her own investigation to clear her name, Agatha accidentally becomes an amateur sleuth. As Agatha settles into the village and the life she always dreamed of, trouble is never far away. Together with her friends Roy, Gemma and Sir Charles, Agatha solves the village’s bizarre murders with panache. This boxset includes the feature length movie Agatha Raisin and the Quiche of Death as well as the complete Series One and Two

My favourite things

CARROTS I love the smell of carrots! Purple, white or orange, doesn’t matter – although orange is the most popular.

FAMILY There have been many much-loved snowmen, women and children across the centuries. More recently, Olaf (my third cousin twice removed) has become quite famous for his antics in Frozen.

SNOW

Photo iStock

While up to 60% of the human adult body is water, basically 100% of a snow person’s body is snow (crystalline flakes of frozen water). As Dean Martin crooned back in the day: “Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow!” I can’t get enough of the cold, white stuff.

Frosty the Snowman Older distant cousin of Olaf (made famous through Disney’s Frozen franchise), Frosty has been a perennial favourite since Gene Autry first sang about him in the early 1950s. An animated 1969 Christmas television special catapulted him to even greater fame. Having moved from North America to the North Pole to be safe from melting, Frosty is hopeful of remaining safe from climate change if humans can collectively do all they can to help protect planet Earth. 114

WINTER It’s the most wonderful time of the year; particularly here in the North Pole where winter is the most enchanting season.

KNITTING I took up knitting after being captivated by kind humans leaving colourful scarves around the “necks” (area between smaller head snowball and bigger body snowball) of my fellow snowmen, women and children. Strengthens my twiggy arms and stimulates my frozen brain.
