Dear Members I’m pleased to welcome in 2022! The New Year ushers in hope and optimism, and for the Club the year 2022 signals the continuation of significant investments across our Venues. In late April, the Yacht Club will close while we complete Stage 2 of the development works in the precinct. This includes internal casual dining downstairs at Snapper & Co. plus the building of the stunning new outdoor dining space that will be called The Deck. We expect all the new areas to be open for business in October. We have also completed our Master Plans for Tuggeranong and Jamison and you’ll start to see the improvements from early this year. At Tuggeranong we have already completed the first small stage of works, with the upgrade to the Brindabella Room upstairs function area. It looks fabulous. We are now working on designs for the downstairs gaming, dining and bar spaces. Jamison has new outdoor furniture already installed and throughout 2022 you’ll see bright new changes across the gaming and dining areas. Across all our Venues, we’re also working on plans to activate more outdoor areas to enjoy. The events of the last two years have made outdoor dining and entertainment spaces more popular and we are lucky to have great outdoor areas at Snapper

Fifty Years Young Help us celebrate the fun, the friendships, and the spirit of the community that is the Canberra Southern Cross Club. Let us set the scene... The year is 1972, you're driving your VW Beetle – probably wearing flares – as you listen to John Lennon's Imagine, or Don McLean's American Pie, playing on the AM radio. Heading in to check out the big new shopping mall at Woden, you notice the new Club nearby has opened its doors. Time to get a bite to eat with the family at the Canberra Southern Cross Club! It’s hard to believe it has been fifty years, but your Club will be celebrating its Golden Anniversary this August. With the idea for a community club reaching all the way back to the 1930s before being shelved due to the Second World War, the 8

project was picked up again some years later. A site at Woden was chosen in 1970, and in May 1971, a successful motion was carried to decide on Canberra Southern Cross Club as the name for your club. A Board of Directors was formed, and as they say, the rest is history. Opening the doors on Thursday 22 August 1972 with a membership of 2,000 was the start of many memories and good times for our Members, sporting and community groups, and a large range of social groups. Fast-forward to 2022, and after a testing two years and a 'groundhog day' start to this year, planning our 50th birthday

celebrations for our Members has been a welcome respite. We can’t wait for you to see what we have in store to mark the occasion with us. Collaborations with some of the local region’s best artisan food and beverage producers, a commemorative coffee table book, and a very special gala celebration are just some of the highlights of what is to come to celebrate our big milestone year. You only turn fifty once, so we look forward to you joining us as we celebrate fifty golden years, and many more to come!

One Golden Night Save the date: The gala event to celebrate our 50 years, One Golden Night, will be held on Saturday 20 August. Tickets will be strictly limited and released in April, so check our website closer to the date for all the details. Tickets: $350 per person. Black Tie. Four course dinner with drinks and a magical night of entertainment. 9

ARO TY I N U M COM Walking for Peace

The Aussie Peace Walk is a fun, non-competitive series of walks – for people of all ages, nationalities and backgrounds – that showcases the Bush Capital while raising much needed funds through Rotary Australia. The money raised this year will go towards reducing child mortality in the Pacific Islands. Held on the weekend of 26-27 March, there are seven walks available, ranging from 7km to 42km, but this isn’t a race. It's a walk, not a run, so there's plenty of time to chat and get to know fellow walkers. Participants are encouraged to connect with each other along the route, and many wear or carry something to represent a country of their choice. The longer you walk, the more chance you will have to make new friends along the way. In Australia, we don’t fear diarrhoea, meningitis or pneumonia. Sadly, this is not the case in the Pacific Islands. Every year, hundreds of children under the age of five die from these three preventable diseases. Rotary believes this is a tragedy that just shouldn’t happen in modern times, and in partnership with UNICEF, have pledged to 'Give Every Child a Future' in nine of the poorest countries in the Pacific Islands. 12

Above: the Wells Station Scout team, winners of the 2021 team prize for dedication and enthusiasm. Below: A baby in Tuvalu receiving life saving vaccinations.

The three year project has a cost of $4.5 million or $45 per child. In December, the Australian Government announced a contribution of $1.4 million to the project, but a further $1.2m is needed. The Aussie Peace Walk is a multicultural community fitness challenge for a worthy cause, and the Canberra Southern Cross Club is proud to partner with this Rotary community health initiative. Keep an eye on our website at cscc.com.au for tickets to the Aussie Peace Walk fundraising dinner. Held at the Yacht Club on Saturday 26 March, tickets to the dinner will be offered to registered walkers first. Visit aussiepeacewalk.com.au to register as a walker and start your fundraising page. You can enter as an individual, a family or a team and join the fun of the walking challenge, or simply donate!

Solo Whist

A keen group of Members meet at Woden to play Solo Whist every Friday from 10am to 2pm. Aside from their forced hiatus during Canberra's two lockdowns, the group have been meeting each week since 1993 and welcome new players to join their Friday games, from beginners to those more experienced. If you would like to join, contact Brian Arkley on 0424 011 162 for details.

Join us for Cribbage

If you enjoy a good hand of cards and enjoy making new friends, come and try Cribbage at Woden. Beginning at 10am each Wednesday, these card sessions offer a fun-filled social event. Play runs through to about 1.30pm, with a break halfway through.

"Before we play, everyone has a chat and we enjoy catching up over coffee," organiser Valerie King (pictured above, second from right with players) says. "It's a lovely group and everyone is very friendly." If you haven't played Cribbage before, you need not worry as the group is happy to teach newcomers, and there's no limit on the numbers. "If they can make it by 9.30am then we can give them a lesson, and we'll teach them as they go." Participation costs $2 a week, with the money going towards a weekly prize for the winner, as well as paying for two social dinners each year. To play, visit Woden on a Wednesday morning and ask our Reception team for the Cribbage Club. For more information, phone Valerie King on 6231 3638.

Community Rewards Support a community, sporting or school group of your choice by linking them to your Membership card, and we will calculate the equivalent of 7.5 cents for every dollar spent on eligible food and beverages at our hospitality venues to be donated by us to your nominated group. You pick a group and we'll donate. No extra cost to you. Huge benefits for our community! Choose a group to support at cscc.com.au/rewards today.
