Delivering a bigger, better Canberra Hospital is a priority project for the ACT Government as we work to futureproof our public healthcare system to meet the needs of our growing city.” There will be new spaces for patients, carers and staff for respite and meetings as well as improved access between the emergency department, helipad, the 12 ambulance bays and critical care facilities. connect buildings and provide cover, and new retail areas and cafes with more outdoor seating. Key design elements of the new facility include a focus on meeting the needs of both patients and staff through access to indoor and outdoor areas for relaxation and quiet reflection. The facility will also have places where families can gather to discuss issues and socialise. Reducing the hospital’s carbon footprint The new facility will be all electric, helping to minimise the carbon footprint of the hospital and helping to contribute to a better environment for Canberrans. Back-up diesel generators will also ensure the hospital can keep critical services running during the unlikely event of a power outage. As the ACT shifts to a carbon-neutral future, the Canberra Hospital Expansion will improve current green star ratings with the new building planned as a 5 Star facility which will support the Territories target of net zero emissions. Supporting a stronger, more highly skilled workforce The Canberra Hospital Expansion is set to support hundreds of local construction jobs and upskilling opportunities for trainees. Construction of the new facility will create about 500 jobs for Canberrans and support our city’s response to COVID-19 economic recovery. To support training and upskilling the local workforce, the ACT Government is partnering with its Canberra Hospital Expansion contractor Multiplex to launch a Connectivity Centre which will support the training of Canberrans and connecting them with local employers to create more valuable job opportunities in the Territory. Additionally, the Canberra Hospital Expansion will also support training the next generations of Canberrans, with a training target of 30% of its workforce, including

upskilling for apprentices, graduates and cadets. This project will help optimise skills and manufacturing capabilities of the local community and support the ACT’s economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. A more inclusive and betterconnected healthcare facility The Canberra Hospital Expansion is being co-designed with hospital users and the wider community to ensure this new facility is fitfor-purpose and meets the needs of Canberrans. Design input from the community and consumers is already being incorporated into the building design following feedback from clinicians, consumers and community. This includes the addition of a physical connection to improve pedestrian access between essential services at the hospital campus. Patients, visitors and clinicians will be able to move between existing facilities and the new building through an enclosed walkway at ground level, with a bridge for clinical access also linking the new building with existing facilities. The ACT Government is invested in meaningful engagement with interested community members who would like to contribute to the conversation around the planning and delivery of this new facility. The Canberra Hospital Expansion team meet regularly with reference groups to discuss the project’s development. Canberra’s Chinese community is represented in these groups through representatives from the ACT Multicultural Advisory Council sitting on the project’s Local Community Reference Group. This is a critical conduit between the project team and the community, to ensure local neighbourhood feedback during the design process is heard. The Canberra community will have an opportunity to have their say when draft documentation for the emergency, surgical and critical healthcare building’s Development Application is released in December 2020.
