Sydney's Crafters in the Wake of the Epidemic -Conversation with craftspeople at the weekend bazaar in Sydney's Rocks

Author: Rae

Weekend markets are a popular way for Australians to spend their leisure time, and in Sydney, the weekend market in Rock suburb is the most famous one. Every Sunday, Sydney people and tourists from home and abroad gather in the Rocks, known as the "birthplace of Australia", where folklore and modern culture mingle and are fully reflected in the crafts of the weekend markets.

Before the epidemic of COVID-19, this was Sydney's liveliest and most culturally rewarding place to go. Over a hundred specialty stalls were selected to showcase unique crafts, accessories, jewelry, pottery, porcelain, wood carvings, perfumes, toys and more, designed by local artists and craftspeople. But how did the craftspeople of the Rocks weekend market survive the epidemic, when the gates of Australia were closed and the crafters lost the huge revenue generated by international visitors? Do they still have stalls at the weekend markets in the Rocks? Do they have the confidence to continue trading in handicrafts in the post-epidemic era? Today, our special reporters interviewed three designers who are engaged in different directions of handicraft products, and they tell their stories.

01 Jewelry designer Phil: Handicraft market highlights unique beauty in the epidemic Phil, a jewelry designer from Australia's Gold Coast,

came to Sydney at an early age and chose to start his own brand, JJA Design, in the Rocks. He and his wife are manning their weekend market stall for 17 years now and have gained many regular customers. He told reporter that the epidemic did have some impact on his business, but he is confident in his brand's unique style and product quality, and is not afraid of the uncertainty brought by the epidemic.

Reporter: Hi Phil, is this your full time job?

Phil: This is my full time job. I work every day to finish

Phil:

Reporter: What do you think making handicrafts means to you? Phil: It's a very unique experience. Crafts are completely different from the factory finished products you see in stores, so a lot of people come here and we want to be able to see something different. Sometimes a lot of people thank us for the designs because they've been around longer. I would say that handicrafts exist for some reason of their own. Reporter: Do you think the outbreak of COVID-19 has had any impact on your business? Phil: The border is closed, but at the same time, the return flow of local tourists was very strong. Although our sales were down, they didn't drop too much, only 30% of sales. Reporter: During the epidemic, how do you think your

Phil:

business future? Phil: I think the future of handicrafts is very bright because now you can go shopping anywhere in the world, but you see the same goods. Whether you go to Singapore, Germany, France, England or Australia, you see the same items in the stores. That's the problem, and it's up to us to make the world different. What you know at the same time is that there are no rules and regulations for crafts, you can push the envelope at any time. You hear from your customers what they really think and how they respond. What we want to do is, if the fashion trend comes back to a certain point, we have to show it to our customers. Right now the epidemic is making it difficult for stores to operate, and they have a lot of inventory that they can't sell. So if you go to a store now, they have a lot of outdated items, they're not recognizable anymore.

her own brand, ApplecartCo, by making cute cotton children's clothing and supplies with a pair of skilled hands. For example, while focusing on comfort, Maureen also considers safety and sews cotton masks. She believes that making children's clothing not only brings pleasure to herself and her customers, but also allows her to adjust to the market demand according to the actual situation, which is the charm and role of handicrafts needed by society. Reporter: When did you start making children's clothing and handicrafts? Maureen: I've been making crafts all my life. My mother made all my clothes until I was 16 years old. I remember one day I complained about the clothes and my mother said to me: I've had enough, I won't sew another dress for you after that. She never made any more clothes for me after that, so I picked up a sewing needle and started making clothes for myself and my family from that point on. I made everything from my daughter to my granddaughter's clothes, and I hadn't thought about selling clothes before that. About 10 years ago, my oldest daughter asked me, "Mom you're always sewing, if that's the case, why don't you sell clothes?" I thought it would

work, so I started sewing clothes and selling them. Reporter: What do you think is the meaning of making clothes? Maureen: That's a good question, I've never thought about it. For me, I enjoy the process of sewing the clothes by hand rather than buying them off the rack. Many of my customers love and appreciate the fact that I can make these unique children's clothes, so I guess what it means to me is that it brings joy to me and to the people around me. Making clothes gives me pleasure and satisfaction. Of course, you will also please your customers when you design new styles. Reporter: Has the epidemic had an impact on your business? Maureen: Although I went through the whole epidemic here last year, my sales were not bad and I got by. Because most of the stores were closed, many customers came to my stall to buy what they needed. I wasn't open every week, and since I needed a lot of time and experience to sew all the costumes, I was only open twice a month, which is one of the reasons the epidemic didn't affect my business very much. I buy protective gear and hand sanitizer for my customers, and I also make masks to sell.

I sewed a lot of masks to try to meet the needs of everyone who could use them during the epidemic. I think we still need to be cautious about the outbreak and get vaccinated as soon as possible. I think we still have to be very careful until most of us are vaccinated.

03 Mother of autistic genius painter Ye Pingliang: Now there is a greater need for handmade art to convey positive energy Among the wide range of handicrafts, the reporter found many passers-by would stop at a painting art stall for a long time. In this painting, large and small, the author uses simple knotted lines and heavy ink paint to outline Australia's iconic buildings, and the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge leap off the page at various times of the morning and evening seasons. The author of these paintings, Ye Pingliang, is a talented painter and a severely autistic person. His mother, Li Xiuyun, brought 16-year-old Ye Pingliang to Sydney, Australia, from Malaysia 10 years ago. After learning about the local culture, Lee decided to bring her son along to sell his weekday paintings at a weekend bazaar in the Rocks. Li Xiuyun told the reporter that creation is not only a way for Pingliang to communicate with the outside world, but she also hopes that through Pingliang's efforts and paintings, more people can get a sense of pleasure and positive spiritual strength, which is especially important in the epidemic. Reporter: How did yousell your paintings in the Rocks? Li Xiuyun: We have been selling paintings at the market in the Rocks for ten years, more than ten years. We brought him here as a child to train him. Because he is autistic, we trained him to be more independent and to communicate with others. In fact, I had a good job, but because he has this talent, I sacrificed my job to help him. Reporter: What do you think is the significance of these paintings for Ye Pingliang and his customers?

Li Xiuyun: Because he (Ye Pingliang) is very severely autistic, but he has a great talent for art, I brought him over here to train him to share ideas and stories in his own way so that he can allow others to appreciate the world from a different perspective and hopefully give others more inspiration. As we did more and more, I think doing these things not only makes others happy, I trained again to my son, you see he is so well behaved despite his autism, he loves to come to this place (Rock District Fair). I feel happy myself, and you see the customers are happy and like Ping Liang. Reporter: What are your thoughts on the future of handicrafts in the in Li Xiuyun: I think we can be happy to change our minds and think in a different way under the predicament. We came over here to share these positive attitudes and spirits, and hope we can bring some positive thinking to everyone.

Most of us born in the 90s are no strangers to knitting. When I was young, I was always curious about my grandma's chest of drawers. As I Open the top layer, I would always find a few balls of wool as well as some knitting needles. During that time, I had no knowledge on what these weird thin sticks are, so I pin them into my braids and burst everyone into laughter. As a child, I had seen many aunts and elderlies knitting away as they chat. This kind of slippers was a common project in the past. In the cold seasons, I often receive them as gifts from relatives who dote on me. It is not long when I leave my hometown to study overseas. When I return for visit during the holidays, I have already grown into a teenage girl who have the special someone in mind. I looked forward to hand making something for him, for example, a knitted scarf. Only then did I realize that the things in my grandma's cabinet were exactly what I needed. Strangely enough, the things in the grandma's cabinet seemed to have been there all the time, regardless during my childhood or my teenage years. It was almost like they were there awaiting to be used. Initially, Grandma was reluctant to teach me how to knit. She said that hand knitted items were no longer appreciated. I doubt so and believe that it was an excuse to stop me from getting over-indulged in the knitting process. As a result, I pestered my grandpa to teach me instead. Grandma finally gave in seeing my persistence. Anyone who have tried knitting must have had the painful experience of making mistakes and fixing dropped stiches. My grandma took the trouble to fix the stitches

如何入门钩针 that I accidentally dropped whenever I needed her. With her help, I got my first brioche stitch scarf completed. Back in Australia, there wouldn't be anyone who could help me fix my stitches all the time. I had neglected my knitting tools for a long while until one day I saw someone crocheting in the carriage on the train. In my personal opinion, compared to knitting, crocheting is much more forgiving. My first crochet work was a rectangular sling bag which was very popular at that time. In the first few attempts, I was overwhelmed by the complexity of hand crochet. It took a long time for the barely satisfactory final product to be produced. However, it was also from this time that I realized that my passion for craftsmanship had not diminished in the slightest.

How to get started with crochet

Connect and Impact in English and Mandarin

As I begin my venture into the crochet world, I discovered a variety of DIY packs on the internet. Sellers will include all the materials needed for the specific project, such as yarns, crochet needles, marker pins and other accessories. With the purchase of these kits, my inventory has gradually become abundant. Later, I started to learn to crochet with different yarns. It is also due to the pandemic situation that I have been staying at home more. I have more time to work with yarns and needles. During this period, I have made some beautiful crochet flowers and some cute little decorations, and also mastered different stitching methods and tricks. Here I will share some practical tips for beginners. Milk cotton: Fibers made from milk protein. It has a soft texture, gives a bright, vivid color, has adequate elasticity to work with and gives a neat final product. Nevertheless, this type of yarn is yet to be popularized and is difficult to buy in Australian craft stores. Wool: tends to be fuzzy, hard to be reused, not suitable for beginners in making crochet products.

Acrylic yarn: best priced yarn, it is diverse in colors and is easily accessible. Depending on the brand, it can have a fuzzy and unpleasant texture. I would recommend it to be used for practice. Crochet needles: You can start with the 3mm width; this moderate size needle is suitable for most introductory crocheting works. Stich marker: Used to mark stiches, 10 of these will be good to begin with. Threading needle: used to sew crochet pieces and to hide threads. Basic stiches to learn: chain stich, single crochet, halfdouble crochet, double crochet, slip stich, magic ring. I also started designing and making crochet bags. I received the inspiration from my one of my friend as she was talking with me about I bag she eyed on. I initiate to make her a similar one with yarn. The first bag I made for her was a black drawstring bag. I used to keep the hobby an entertainment for myself. It was not before I decide to set up a stall at the weekend market that I first bring my work out to sell. I wanted everyone to enjoy my work and at the same time I was worried that no one buys them. The anxiety unknowing subsides on site as I greeted customers who were amazed by the items I created. Since I started crocheting, I have received a lot of encouragement and appreciation. I think everyone should have something they love and do it with persistence and enthusiasm, the result will be fruitful. I deeply thank my aunts and grandmas for the heartwarming hand made slippers. The sentiments within hand made crafts will never be substituted by machinewoven products. Until now, I still think of grandma's chest of drawers, the faint smell of wood when it is opened, and the balls of yarn inside.
