After the cold winter, it will be the spring. We are thankful for the fragrance
of nature and the warmth of the world, and we are thankful that in this
world, there is always heart-warming love being transmitted. We believe that as long as we embrace the world with love, we can always resist the cold and dispel the virus.
Winter is fading away and spring is coming. In 2020 and 2021, the world is immersed in the fear of COVID-19 pandemic. Several cities in Australia
are in lockdown intermittently. However, no matter how hard it is to make it through, there are still many heart-warming and loving stories around us. The cover of this issue introduces two "warm" companies Crossroad English Volunteer Team is a team of passionate volunteers who teach English to non-native English speakers for free in the community.
It's one of the ways they welcome newcomers to Canberra from other countries.
They run free weekly English classes every Wednesday evening at the
Gungahlin Library for people who want to practice their English, and also
hold regular parties, dinners and events for people who want to make new friends in Canberra.
Expert Education and Visa Services is also an agency with warmth. They

1.Could you please tell our readers about the Crossroads English Class? Crossroads English started at the beginning of 2020. It’s a community program supported by Crossroads Christian Church. It’s one of the ways that we welcome newcomers from other countries to Canberra. We run free weekly English classes on Wednesday evenings, at Gungahlin Library, for people who want to practise their English. We also have regular parties, dinners and events for people who want to meet new people in Canberra. When the libraries were closed because of COVID,

Crossroads Christian Church gave Crossroads English a place to hold lessons. The church continues to support Crossroads English with about 50 volunteers who help us run the classes and events. 2. What made you have this idea to start a volunteer teaching class? Crossroads English actually didn’t start the class. It was the churches in Gungahlin that saw the need and started the classes at the Gungahlin Library about 6 years ago. Over time, the people who started the classes had to move on and so Crossroads Church people came to help so that the classes could keep going. The volunteers also saw that people who were new to Canberra had left their families and communities in their home country and they often wanted to make new friends and find new networks. So, they started offering social events too. People often tell us that our social events are the first time that they have been invited into a local family home. They really feel special. 3. Who can be volunteer teachers for this group?

We are lucky to have over 1,000 people who belong to Crossroads Church in four different locations around Canberra. We have good support from our wider community who think Crossroads English is really important. Many volunteers on our team are trained teachers and some are also ESL teachers. 4. What is the format of Crossroads English Class like?

We start the classes at 7:15pm on Wednesday nights with a warm up activity, to give everyone time to settle in and meet each other. Everyone sits in small table groups with a tutor and other people who have a similar level of English skills. A lead teacher guides the lesson and follows a main theme for the night. The teacher plans lesson activities that get everyone involved in practising their speaking and listening. We teach some grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, but the main focus is on becoming better listeners and more confident speakers. we don’t do any testing. We finish with supper and some social time at about 9pm. Often some of the volunteers have done some home baking to share. 5. Who can be Crossroads English Class`s students? Any adults who are learning English as another language can come along to practise their English. There are no age, visa or skill requirements and the classes are free. We have people with all levels of English skills. We also have young people, middle aged people and grandparents. Anyone is welcome to come and try the class, to see if it suits them. 6. So far how many students has your team helped, and where are they originally from? That’s a hard question to answer. People usually keep in touch with us, even when they don’t need the classes anymore, or get too busy. Many people just come to the events now. There are nearly 200 people who get our email updates and we’ve had up to 120 people at our last few events. The social events are now so popular that we need to meet in several different houses. People come from everywhere. We’ve had people from Italy, France, Spain, Macedonia, Turkey, Egypt, Syria, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Russia, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, Japan, Columbia, El Salvador, Chile, Venezuela, Peru, Brazil, Honduras, and more. 7. The best way to learn English in Canberra is to do two things. First try to get formal training at one of the language schools like Navitas, CIT or Unity College. The rules have recently changed so that many more people are now eligible for government funded courses. The second thing is to practise what you learn, at home and in the community. Crossroads English is one of the ways to practise your English and we can help give you other ideas to help your English learning too. For example, it’s great if you can use English when you are shopping, listening to news and watching movies and talking to your English-speaking friends, neighbours or family members. Be brave and take risks. There are also lots of websites to help you and the libraries in Canberra have lots of books to help English learners. 8. What is the most challenging thing for running a volunteer teaching group? Communication! All the volunteers have day jobs and are busy. It’s hard to keep in touch. We want to be very organised for every lesson and event, so we try hard to communicate well, but it’s a challenge. 9. Where can we enrol in your Crossroads English Class? Anyone can just come along on a Wednesday night at 7:15pm to the Gungahlin Library in Hibberson Street Gungahlin. We are in the big conference rooms on the ground floor. Not many people know that approximately 46% of the ACT land are covered by the magnificent Namadgi National Park. The park is classified as an IUCN ( International Union for Conservation of Nature) Category II protected area. It is located to the southwest of Canberra and is around 45 minutes drive from the Canberra city. The film started almost four years ago and aims to produce a documentary style that captures the history and modern-day use of the Namadgi National Park.

“This is a journey to find the true spirit of Namadgi National Park” The title of the documentary is ‘Finding the Namadgi Trail’, which is in recognition and respect for the traditional Aboriginal owners of the land, but also a nod to the trails that the Aboriginal people followed into the mountains. Many of the modern-day park users are following the very same trails without even knowing it. One of the fascinating aspects of this documentary has been the film’s journey to date, and the many setbacks the documentary creator has endured. It's not often that you find a person in their 50's starting out on their film career. But, after 33 years as a police officer, Steve Cooke finally got to pursue his lifelong dream of film making when he 'semiretired'. It was his love of bush walking that drew him into film making. "I always take lots of photos on my bush walks, but what I really wanted ever since I was a child, was to make my own film . Then the idea came to me that I could film a documentary about what I loved, Namadgi National park" Besides his passion on filmmaking, he also want to give the opportunity to a few young people,who are starting in the industry and allow them to be involved. "because of this approach, I have a small and dedicated group of young filmmakers assisting me. They are the backbone of what I'm doing and I think over time, they are sharing the joy of this film making journey that we are on"

connects people. It’s a big thing. Anthony believes that going to a café is not only about the food or the coffee, but also about the time you spend and the opportunity to connect with people. Through his love of coffee, he was able to connect with many talented baristas, motivating him to kickstart his career. Before working in the industry, he would go into different cafes, sit at the brew section, and talk to the barista all day. From this, he learned many things about being a barista and expanded his knowledge of coffee. Over the past few years, he has participated in various competitions, allowing him to showcase his skills and make many friends in the coffee industry. As he became more and more passionate about coffee, he decided to pursue this full time. Walking into a café is like entering a long-forgotten world. The sensory impact is overwhelming. The hissing of the machine, the murmur of conversation, and the smell of the delicious coffee. Sipping my coffee in this atmosphere makes me really relaxed and allows me to leave all the stress behind. I have been really excited to do this story, as I always love going to a café and spending the afternoon there. Today, I will be talking to the award-winning barista, Anthony Sofatzis, exploring his relationship with coffee, and how it changed his life. Linus: Sitting here for a while, I find customers are very relaxed sitting in the café Anthony: Yes, that's what coming to a café about, spending time with friends, meeting with co-workers. Coffee is that connection. Coffee connects people, it is a big thing. Sometimes people come in by themselves, sit here before they start work, just need a relaxing moment. having a coffee while reading a book, that’s it, every single day.
