tradition, we want you to know that Easter Week in the Canaries is much more than the sun and beaches which we of course have – but there are also places where Easter is celebrated in a singular manner, attracting hundreds of visitors who wish to see the thrones and

statues, true samples of religious art, which together with the smell of incenses, form part of the numerous religious processions that

wind through the streets of our cities and towns. The protagonist of our main interview is Rogelio Quintero, a true expert in traditional Canary Island gastronomy, which he has studied throughout his entire career, and on which subject he has several publications to his name. He’s an artist of the island cuisine, who knows how to perfectly combine ingredients, adapting his creations to the times without losing their essence.

In Canary Island Style we have a visit from Roque Albertos, a Canary Islander who decided to that the best way to combine his two passions of football and travelling would be to bring happiness and eagerness to children all over the world. in the Canary Islands. In our Sports sections we continue with our bicycle routes through the islands, this time in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. And we take off En Route to Fuerteventura, an island with many treasures waiting to be discovered. We take our younger readers to gaze at the stars from the Roque de los Muchachos, in With Kids, an adventure they will love to share with their friends. All this, along with Granny Pilar’s stuffed potatoes in Papas y Mojo and the contributions of our friend Domingo J. González, is what we have prepared for you in this tenth issue of our magazine. We hope with all our heart that you will enjoy it.

The Canarian show ‘Cambuyón’ in New York After having met with spectacular success in the Canaries, Barcelona, Edinburgh and Germany, in February the Canarian dance 'Cambuyón' descended upon the New Theatre of New York, which is located in the heart of Broadway and is a planetwide referent for stage productions. The production is a medley of urban and percussive dance (hip-hop, tap, body percussion), song and music with which the 7 performers travel through the evolution of rhythm in western culture. Dancers and musicians together form an excellent troupe which fuses different disciplines, cultures and rhythms. Meticulous

Theatre, cinema, museums….and stars

The year 2015 commences a year of autonomous regional, island and local elections. We will see what influence the elective process has on the cultural area of our lives. And as it commences, the Canary Island government has decided that in the field of writing arts, the year will be dedicated to Arturo Maccanti: an excellent choice, this poet who left us feeling a bit orphaned when he left us in 2014. This will be the year in which the Universal Surrealist Exhibit, which André Breton himself brought to Tenerife, celebrates its eightieth anniversary. All in all, a year during which we will be on the lookout for any commemoration, for any interesting event generated by culture in these our islands. And as we have to start somewhere.

Easter Week Much more than sun and beaches It’s not all sun and sand; in the Canary Islands tradition is also a fundamental part of life. Whether you are religious or not, it’s worth your while to put the beach aside for a few hours and enjoy viewing one of the magnificent processions in which you will be able to observe some of the great works of religious art of the Islands.

Children and pets, the perfect mix It’s true: when you have a pet at home you have added responsibilities. But the benefits are worth the effort if we take care of them properly. Children have the opportunity to learn how to be responsible; they tend to demonstrate more positive attitudes and they learn from experience about how life progresses, facing its stages in a natural manner. Living with a pet gives you this and so more, as we will show you.

To begin with, emotional comfort is ensured: our pet will give us company, happiness and unconditional love. Fernando Pinedo, who is the head of San Antonio Veterinarian Hospital, tells us of the innumerable advantages of a family pet, especially for kids. “Numerous studies show that pets at home provide multiple benefits. It is good not only from an emotional point of view, but also from the point of view of teaching responsibility. It’s good

Let’s go Stargazing The Roque de los Muchachos is one of those privileged spots in our Islands where we find a superb view of the sky. Situated on the edge of the National Park of la Caldera de Taburiente at an altitude about 2.400 metres, it is an ideal location for perfect observation of the heavens, comparable only with a few other places in the world such as The Teide, Hawaii or Peru. Pedaling through Santa Cruz de Tenerife Tenerife’s capital city is for seasoned bikers. Full of hills both up and down, we recommend pedaling Santa Cruz to those with a certain amount of experience. On the other hand, you can ride straight from the Plaza de España to the beach of Las Teresitas with a final reward: a nice swim at the end of the route. But if you finally decide to bike around the city center, we can tell you everything you should visit. Above all, don’t forget to look up, the facades of historical buildings are often overlooked.

We start at the Park of García Sanabria, because this park is in itself a work of art. You’ll realize this for yourself as you discover the sculptures hidden away throughout the park, and which form part of the exhibit of Street Sculptures that took place in 1973 with the participation of such important artists such as: Marcel Martí, Mark Macken, Gustavo Torner, Federico Assler, Óscar Domínguez, Jaume Cubells… This is the best place to discover by bike and ride through all its nooks and passages. Heading down one of the most well-known streets of the city, the calle del Pilar, we will arrive at the Plaza del Príncipe, so named for the Prince of Asturias. Granny Pilar’s stuffed potatoes Granny Pilar was a great cook, with a special touch when preparing traditional Canary Island dishes. Her family was fortunate to be able to enjoy her delicious creations, but also because she left them a gastronomical legacy: a booklet with all her hand-written recipes. It is worth its weight in gold and we share with you one of these precious and very Canarian recipes: stuffed potatoes. Thank you, Granny Pilar, wherever you may be.

Maps to the Stars Dir: David Cronenberg David Cronenberg, once known as a horror film-maker, has been turning to satire and the caricature of certain aspects of the world in which we live. He did it with Cosmopolis and now he has done it again in a much more brutal manner, with Maps to the Stars. This new work is, they say, a ferocious satire of Hollywood. A choral film with a great cast led by Julianne Moore –best actress in Cannes- and in which John Cusack and Robert Pattison, who has worked previously with this film-maker, also appear.

This recommendation is stolen from our collaborator Domingo. Silvia Pérez Cruz was awarded a Goya in 2013 for the best original song, for I can't find you, a song we enjoyed hearing in the film Snow White by Pablo Berger. Her sweet voice, full of color, wraps us in a mood perfect for, let's say, a glass of wine and a sunset.

The Canary Island Employment Service is on the social networks! We don't know what they are going to inform people about but we browsed a bit on Facebook and we could see that they have announced some public examinations for civil service jobs, and offered advice about finding a job. Let's see if they surprise us.

We didn’t believe until we saw it for ourselves. Aliexpress is the biggest online business for articles made in China; you can find almost everything with just a click and at incredibly low prices. You can buy anything from a Tablet to a clown nose. And they say they offer total security . We haven’t yet bought anything there, so we can’t tell you if that last part is true or not.
