2024 has been a busy year at Jersey Canada, and heading into 2025 it looks to be even busier.

At the end of January, Jersey Canada Extension Services, a joint initiative with Jersey Ontario, will be offering a presentation on the topic of JX and bracket genetics. This information will be recorded and available online for all breeders, with more education on the topic to follow through the year.

In early March 2025, Jersey Canada will be a sponsor of the Western Canadian Dairy Seminar in Red Deer, Alberta. Jersey Canada and Jersey West are organizing a farm tour to take place prior, and we will have a booth at the event, come and say hi!

At the end of March will be our AGM, taking place in the beautiful Hockley Valley in Ontario, where we will be presenting our 2025-2027 strategic plan to members. This plan will guide the association over the next three years through a time of steady expansion in the Jersey breed. After initial consultations with members and staff, the board has identified three strategic areas of focus.

The first is labelled Organizational Design & Efficiency, with the objective of ensuring Jersey Canada can grow with our members. Jerseys are experiencing record growth in Canada, and this is an opportunity to move our association and the breed forward using that momentum. To do this, we need to act thoughtfully and build capacity to manage both expected and unexpected challenges.

Customer Experience is the second heading under this plan. Understanding that our success depends on support from members, it is essential we continue to provide value as a member-based association, and so we will concentrate on customer-focused actions such as educational outreach and increasing committee involvement and retention.

The third Strategic Priority, Promotion and Collaboration, will focus on how to make the best use of the advantages both Jersey Canada and the Jersey breed already have. This strategic plan will be in effect for the 125th anniversary of Jersey Canada in 2026, and as a foundational organization within the Canadian dairy industry we have a wealth of resources that can benefit our members.

As staff and the board work to finalize this strategic plan we will be seeking additional input, and we welcome your feedback at any time during the process.

Thank you to our members and clients for making 2024 a year to remember, and best wishes for a happy, healthy and prosperous 2025.

À la fin mars se tiendra notre AGA dans la magnifique région de Hockley Valley en Ontario, où nous présenterons aux membres notre plan stratégique 2025-2027. Ce plan guidera l’association pour les trois prochaines années, temps d’expansion constante de la race Jersey. Après des consultations initiales auprès des membres et du personnel, le conseil a identifié trois secteurs stratégiques sur lesquels nous nous concentrerons.

La première priorité est efficacité et design organisationnels qui a pour objectif de s’assurer que Jersey Canada puisse grandir avec nos membres. Les Jerseys connaissent une croissance record au Canada et c’est l’occasion de faire grandir notre association et la race en utilisant cet élan. Pour ce faire, nous devons agir de façon réfléchie et établir la capacité pour gérer les défis attendus et inattendus.

Cette information sera enregistrée et disponible en ligne pour tous les éleveurs et plus de formation sur le sujet suivra au cours de l’année.

With 2024 winding down, it is a perfect time for reflection. Jersey registrations promise to be record breaking; they are up from last year and have increased on average of 3% year over year for the last 10 years. The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto was a huge success with over 250 head shown at the National Jersey Show and extremely good interest at the Jersey Canada booth.

Jersey Canada is in the process of completing its strategic plan for the next three years. Jersey Canada’s vision is still Canadian Jersey: efficiency, profitability, opportunity. Our mission is to grow the Jersey breed in Canada by maintaining integrity of the herd book and providing services that encourage successful advancement of members and the breed. The strategic priorities chosen by the Jersey Canada Directors for 2024–2027 are: organizational design and efficiency; customer experi -

ence; and promotion and collaboration. We look forward to expanding on these priorities soon.

I am looking forward to networking with fellow breeders and Jersey enthusiasts at the AGM at Hockley Valley, March 28-29th, 2025. It’ll be an event you don’t want to miss. Wishing everybody a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Alors que 2024 tire à sa fin, c’est le temps des réflexions. Les enregistrements Jerseys battront surement des records – ils sont plus nombreux que l’an dernier et ont augmenté en moyenne de 3 % par année depuis les 10 dernières années. La Foire agricole Royale d’hiver à Toronto a connu un succès retentissant avec plus de 250 bêtes participant à l’exposition Nationale Jersey et le kiosque de Jersey Canada attirait beaucoup d’intérêt.

Jersey Canada est à compléter son plan stratégique pour les trois prochaines années. La vision de Jersey Canada est toujours la Jersey canadienne : efficacité, profitabilité, opportunité. Notre mission est de faire grandir la race Jersey au Canada en maintenant l’intégrité du livre généalogique et en fournissant des services qui encourage l’avancement réussi des membres et de la race. Les priorités stratégiques choisies par les administrateurs de Jersey Canada pour 2024–2027 sont : efficacité et design organisationnel; expérience client; promotion et collaboration. Looking for travel assistance? Jersey Canada offers a unique financial assistance program geared toward Jersey breeders, to make it easier for out-of-province young people to attend the Jersey Canada AGM. The 2025 AGM takes place March 27-30, 2025 at the Hockley Valley Resort in Mono, Ontario.

Three $1000 travel bursaries are available for applicants between 18 and 35 to individuals in the following regions: Jersey West, Jersey Quebec and Jersey Atlantic. To apply please submit a letter detailing the following:

1. Describe yourself and your involvement with the Jersey breed.

Changes to Parentage Test Policy

Modifications à la politique concernant les tests de parenté

As of January 1st, 2025, Jersey Canada will be implementing updated policy regarding animals with pending parentage verification. If parentage test results are not received by Jersey Canada within 12 months from the original request, the animal’s herdbook status will be adjusted from ‘pending’ to ‘recorded,’ meaning the animal’s breed purity status will be set at 0%, and the herdbook status of any progenies registered to the animal will be adjusted accordingly. If parentage test results are received by Jersey Canada at any time after this deadline, the herdbook status of the animal and any registered progeny will be updated accordingly.

À compter du 1er janvier 2025, Jersey Canada mettra en œuvre une politique à jour concernant les animaux dont la parenté est en attente de vérification. Genomic Testing Admin Fees Permanently Reduced Frais d'administration des tests génomiques réduits

As of January 1st, 2025, the administration fee charged by Jersey Canada for SNP results from genomic tests will permanently be reduced to $2 per result. The reduced fee will apply to test results received by Jersey Canada after January 1st.

The Jersey Canada Board of Directors approved this change to reflect the introduction of a new workflow that saves labour in processing the tests. If you have any questions, please contact the Jersey Canada office.

À compter du 1e janvier 2025, le frais d’administration facturé par Jersey Canada pour les résultats SNP pour les tests génomiques sera réduit définitivement de 2 $ par résultat. Le frais réduit s’appliquera aux résultats de tests reçus par Jersey Canada après le 1e janvier.

The ﬁrst Ontario Invitational Sale was held on May 27th, 1965, at Hays Farms International Ltd., Sales Arena, Oakville, ON. The Sale originated as result of requests from County Clubs to organize an Ontario Consignment Sale that would be open to breeders across Ontario, Canada and the United States.

The ﬁrst Ontario Invitational Sale Committee members were: Frank Stenger, Chairman, Grant Butcher, Norman Bagg, Maurice Beaty, Karl E. Haas, Cameron Honderich, Donald McCaig, Cecil Mortson, Francis Redelmeier, George H. Innes, Arden Baker, John D. Thomson and J.D. Oliver. John McCaig, acted as Secretary and made the selection of consignments. The Committee’s goal was to establish an auction that was an outstanding event, offering animals of the highest quality to the public.

The Committee set consignment requirement standards of:

• 10,000 lbs ME Milk or 500 lbs ME Fat

• Classiﬁed VG or EX

• Heifers without record, the immediate dam must meet the requirements

The Honorable Harry Hays, Federal Minster of Agriculture, sold 40 head in under two hours for a total of $34,250.00, average $856.00. Two lots, Lindale Echo Flash, consigned by Maurice Beaty and sold to Oxford & District Cattle Breeding Association, and Enniskillen Flash Sparrow, consigned by F. Stenger & Son, sold to Heaven Hill Farm, NY., topped the sale at $2,200.00.

This year, the 60th Ontario Invitational Sale will take place on Saturday, April 5th, 2025, at the Grandway Centre, Elora, ON.

Have you ever heard the term the “Jersey flop”? It is a guarantee that almost every 4-H member who has chosen a Jersey heifer as their 4-H project knows exactly what it means. Would you be surprised to find out that many successful 4-H show people consider the Jersey flop to be a benefit? They believe the flop is part of the reason why Jerseys make superior showmanship animals.

If you have noticed an increase in Jerseys at 4-H shows recently, you're not alone. Since 2018, the number of exhibitors showing Jerseys in the TD Classic at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, has grown from 56 to 70 in 2024. The statistics also reveal an increasing number of 4-H members showing Jerseys being near the top of their showmanship classes. Diving into the numbers shows that 25% of members in the showmanship class finals of this year’s TD Classic were showing Jerseys. To top it off, both the Grand and Reserve Champion show people this year were at the halter of a Jersey. This is only the second time in TD Classic history that this has occurred, with the first time being just the year before in 2023.

To dig deeper into why Jerseys seem to make excellent showmanship animals, I spoke with three of

this year’s TD Classic participants, Rachel Tamlin, Maryn Hunter and Grand Champion show person, Nadia Uhr. Prior to making it to Toronto for the biggest 4-H show in Canada, they competed and were successful at several 4-H shows throughout Ontario from July to November. All three have shown Jerseys for years but not before they showed Holsteins. I wanted to hear about their experiences showing Jerseys and what advantages they thought might come with it.

Not surprisingly, all three members had similar responses to my questions. They all told me the size of the Jersey is an advantage right off the bat. The smaller stature of a Jersey gives them more options as they can show younger animals right up to yearlings and not have to worry about them getting too big by the time fall rolls around. They also tend to stand out in large classes. Their colour and size make them very noticeable on the outside of the ring in classes that are still predominately Holsteins. Next, the Jersey personality was mentioned. Jerseys being naturally more curious and engaged in their surroundings gives off a presence when walking into the ring; their ears are always forward, and head carriage is rarely an issue.

One response provided a new perspective on a sometimes-frustrating Jersey characteristic. It was stressed that extra training is required when working with a Jersey, especially in the beginning. This brings us back to the Jersey flop. We’ve all been therewhether it is moving a weaned calf from a hutch or a fresh two-year-old from the maternity pen to the main herd. As soon as a halter is placed on her the animal goes down. Not all Jerseys do this but compared to other breeds, we can’t deny, it is a Jersey thing!

What truly surprised me is that these 4-H members consider the flop to be an

advantage. Why, you ask? The advantage is in overcoming it. The extra work required by a member to halter break a Jersey helps to forge a strong bond between showperson and calf. Once that bond is formed, they become an inseparable team and it is obvious to everyone, including the judge. Once trained, a Jersey seems to have muscle memory and while regular training remains essential, she knows the assignment and always performs. This, paired with her “ears up” engaging personality, translates into Jerseys becoming the showmanship animal of choice. •

récemment, vous n’êtes pas les seuls. De 56 en 2018, le nombre d’exposants présentant des Jerseys à la Classique TD à la Foire agricole Royale d’hiver à Toronto est passé à 70 en 2024. Les statistiques révèlent aussi qu’un nombre croissant de membres 4-H qui présentent des Jerseys sont au sommet de leurs classes de présentation. Si on regarde de plus près les chiffres, on remarque que 25 % des membres dans les finales de classes de la Classique TD de cette année présentaient des Jerseys. En plus, les présentateurs de la Grande Championne et la Grande Championne de Réserve de cette année avaient une Jersey au licou. Ce n’est que la deuxième fois dans l’histoire de la Classique TD que ceci arrive, la première fois étant juste l’année précédente, en 2023. Pour mieux comprendre pourquoi les Jerseys semblaient être d’excellents animaux pour le showmanship, j’ai parlé avec trois des participants de la Classique TD de cette année soit Rachel Tamlin, Maryn Hunter et la présentatrice de la Grande Championne, Nadia Uhr. Avant d’arriver à Toronto pour la plus grande exposition 4-H au Canada, ils ont participé et ont gagné plusieurs expositions 4-H en Ontario, de juillet à novembre. Toutes les trois présentent des Jerseys depuis plusieurs années mais ont toutes auparavant présenté des Holsteins. Je voulais qu’elles me racontent leur expérience dans la présentation des Jerseys et quels avantages elles y retrouvaient.

Sans surprises, toutes les trois avaient des réponses similaires à mes questions. Elles m’ont toutes dit en débutant que la taille de la Jersey est un net avantage. Le plus petit gabarit d’une Jersey leur donne plus d’options car elles peuvent présenter des animaux plus jeunes, jusqu’à un an et de ne pas à se soucier qu’elles seront trop grandes à l’automne. Elles tendent aussi à se démarquer dans les classes nombreuses. Leur couleur et taille font qu’elles sont facilement repérables dans l’arène dans des classes qui sont prédominées par de Holsteins. Puis, elles mentionnent la personnalité des Jerseys. Les Jerseys étant naturellement plus curieuses et conscientes de leur milieu, ont une belle prestance lorsqu’elles entrent dans l’arène. Leurs oreilles sont toujours vers l’avant et on a rarement besoin de leur lever la tête.

Une réponse a fourni une nouvelle perspective sur une caractéristique Jersey qui peut être frustrante. On m’a dit que lorsqu’on travaille avec une Jersey, surtout au début, elles requièrent plus d’entraînement. Ceci nous ramène à l’écrasement de la Jersey. Nous l’avons tous vécu – que ce soit en déplaçant un veau sevré d’une hutte ou une deux ans fraîchement vêlée du parc de maternité vers le troupeau principal. Dès que le licou est placé sur elle, elle s’écrase. Ce ne sont pas toutes les Jerseys qui le font, mais comparativement aux autres

races, nous ne pouvons le nier, c’est un trait Jersey!

Ce qui m’a vraiment surpris est que ces membres 4-H considèrent cet écrasement comme étant un avantage. Pourquoi demanderiez-vous? L’avantage est de vaincre cet instinct. Le travail de surplus requis par un membre pour habituer la Jersey au licou aide à former ce lien entre la personne qui présente et le veau. Un fois ce lien formé, ils deviennent une équipe inséparable et c’est évident pour tout le monde, incluant le juge. Une fois entraînée, une Jersey connait la mission et performe chaque fois. Ceci, en plus de sa personnalité engageante avec les ‘oreilles droites’ font que les Jerseys sont des animaux de choix pour les compétitions de présentation.

The Clifton Berry Jersey Ambassador award was established in 2022 in honour of the late Clifton Berry of North River Jerseys who was above all else extremely passionate about the Jersey cow, a very highly respected leader and true gentleman, who devoted his life to promote the breed. This award seeks to showcase a Jersey breeder who exemplifies the many qualities that Clifton embodied, namely being a person of integrity, a leader, a visionary, a trusted friend, a mentor, and most of all someone who is dedicated to the promotion of the Jersey breed and maintaining a strong camaraderie among fellow breeders. Awards and accolades came his way naturally, but Clifton always remained humble. His love of the Jersey cow,

and even more so his fellow breeder, was felt by everyone around him

2024 WINNER

Marcel Choiniere is the third recipient of this coveted award. In a myriad of ways, Marcel is very much like the late Clifton. He has been involved with Jerseys his entire life. He has always been a very proud and positive voice for the breed. He is very highly respected by everyone in the industry. Marcel is someone capable of guiding, influencing, and inspiring all the people he meets without exception. In 1984, he graduated as an agronomist at McGill University and began his career as a dairy specialist at Purina. He remains very active with rural youth and producers who want to learn more

about the Jersey cow. Very involved in exhibitions, he was the initiator of Purina Jersey exhibits in Quebec in the early 1990s to help young breeders showcase their animals. In nearly 40 years of involvement with Jersey breeders in Quebec and even New England, Marcel Choinière's influence and expertise crosses borders, making him a natural choice to win this new ambassador award.

From 1992 to 2010, Marcel Choinière was an active exhibitor in Quebec as well as at the World Dairy Expo (WDE) in Madison and the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto. His animals stood out everywhere Marcel went. During his career, his Jerseys have been Junior Champion at the WDE (co-owned with Mr. Stéphane Marceau), winner of the

Best Junior Three in Madison, Junior Champion at the Royal in Toronto and Grand Champion Jersey at the Royal in both 2002 and 2004 (co-owned with Ferme Scottière). Even today, after selling his herd, Marcel Choinière remains active with exhibitor friends and partners. He participates in both local and national exhibitions to prepare and present animals. He just won 1st place with his Junior 3 year old at this past Royal (co-owned with Ferme Scottiere) and Honourable Mention Grand Champion with this beautiful cow, Scottiere Daxia Victorious.

Marcel Choinière has also had the opportunity to judge a large number of regional exhibitions (Saint-Anselme, Brome, Lachute, etc.) as well as the Young Rural Peoples in Quebec. In Ontario, he had the honour of judging the Spring Show as well as the Stratford Fall Show. Internationally, his expertise has been retained for judgments in the United States, Brazil and Switzerland.

In the early 1990s, Marcel Choinière was also very involved on the boards of Jersey Quebec and Jersey Canada. The objective he had set himself was to improve the status the Jersey breed among dairy farmers in search of profitability. It is truly thanks to him and various members of these committees that the breed regained strength and led to its vitality that we know today. During his career, Marcel Choinière was also president of the Quebec Joint Dairy Breeds Committee.

The Clifton Berry Jersey Ambassador award selection committee, Jersey Canada, and the Berry family offer their sincere congratulations to Marcel for this win as he is truly an ambassador in every sense of the word. Thank you again Marcel for your remarkable contributions to the Jersey Breed.

Marcel Choinière est le troisième gagnant de ce nouveau prix très convoité. D’une multitude de façons, Marcel ressemble beaucoup au regretté Clifton. Il a été actif auprès des Jerseys pendant toute sa vie. Il a toujours été une voix fière et positive pour la race. Il est très respecté de tous dans l’industrie. Marcel est capable de guider, influencer et inspirer tous les gens qu’il rencontre, sans exception. En 1984, il a gradué comme agronome de l’Université McGill et a commencé sa carrière comme spécialiste laitier chez Purina. Il est demeuré très actif auprès de la jeunesse rurale et des producteurs qui voulaient en apprendre plus au sujet de la vache Jersey. Très engagé dans les expositions, il est l’instigateur des expositions Jerseys Purina au Québec au début des années 1990 pour aider les jeunes éleveurs à présenter leurs animaux. En près de 40 ans d’actions auprès des éleveurs de Jerseys au Québec en en Nouvelle-Angleterre, l’influence et l’expertise de Marcel Choinière traverse les frontières et fait de lui un choix naturel pour remporter ce nouveau prix d’ambassadeur. Il participe tant aux expositions locales que nationales pour préparer et présenter des animaux. Il vient de remporter une 1e place avec sa Junior 3 ans à la dernière Royale (copropriété avec Ferme Scottière) et Mention Honorable Grande Championne avec cette magnifique vache, Scottiere Daxia Victorious.

Marcel Choinière a aussi eu l’occasion de juger un grand nombre d’exposition régionales (Saint-Anselme, Brome, Lachute, etc.) ainsi que les Jeunes Ruraux au Québec. En Ontario, il a eu l’honneur de juger l’exposition de printemps ainsi que l’exposition d’automne de Stratford. À l’international, son expertise a été retenue pour des jugements aux ÉtatsUnis, au Brésil et en Suisse.

Au début des années 1990, Marcel Choinière siégeait aux conseils d’administration de Jersey Québec et Jersey Canada. Il s’était donné comme objectif d’améliorer le statut de la race Jersey parmi les producteurs laitiers en recherche de profitabilité. C’est vraiment grâce à lui et plusieurs membres de ces comités que la race a gagné en force et l’a menée à la vitalité qu’elle connait aujourd’hui. Au cours de sa carrière, Marcel Choinière a également été président du comité conjoint des races laitières pour le Québec (Quebec Joint Dairy Breeds Committee).

Le comité de sélection du prix Ambassadeur Jersey Clifton Berry, la Foire agricole Royale d’hiver et la famille Berry offrent leurs sincères félicitations à Marcel pour ce prix car il est un vrai ambassadeur dans tous les sens du mot. LIFE SKILLS

As a 4-H member, Rachel has gained valuable life skills, including problem-solving, teamwork and leadership. Her experience on the TD Classic Team at the Royal strengthened her teamwork and leadership abilities through collaboration and idea-sharing. Additionally, 4-H has taught her time management and project handling.

MAKING CONNECTIONS

Rachel enjoys the networking and friendships that have developed because of being in 4-H. Through local and national shows, community activities, and sales, she has formed lasting connections with like-minded individuals, including other Jersey breeders.

THE FUTURE

As a first-year Bachelor of Science in Agriculture student at Guelph University, Rachel aims to become a large animal veterinarian or an animal nutritionist. She was one of 12 recipients of the 4-H TD Canada Trust scholarship in 2024. She also plans to expand her Miracle Jerseys herd, with a focus on breeding profitable cows that excel in the show ring.

THE JERSEY EFFECT

Rachel has been showing Jerseys as her 4-H projects since the age of 10. She needed a smaller calf to compliment her own size and was not satisfied with the young Holsteins on the family farm at the time. They decided to buy a Jersey - not only for 4-H but to begin their own Jersey herd to increase butterfat on the farm. One of Rachel's favourite parts of 4-H is choosing her project for the year and working with it to achieve positive results at shows.

LEARN TO DO BY DOING

Rachel got her start in 4-H by being a Cloverbud. Since then, she's been a part of a variety of different clubs including vet science, judging, sewing and baking, gardening, rabbit and equestrian clubs. She's also currently in the dairy club at the University of Guelph. The 4-H motto influences Rachel everyday. She looks after feeding and caring for the Jerseys that she owns on the farm daily. Hands-on learning through clipping her own calf to prepare for a show or showing younger members and having them try it on their own is valuable and rewarding. She feels that 4-H has given her the confidence to keep striving to do her very best.

Comme membre 4-H, Rachel a acquis des habiletés fondamentales inestimables comme la solution de problèmes, le travail en équipe et le leadership. Son expérience au sein de l’équipe de la Classique TD à la Royale a solidifié ses capacités de travail en équipe et de leadership par des collaborations et le partage d’idées. En plus, les 4-H lui ont appris la gestion du temps et la gestion de projets.

ÉTABLIR DES RELATIONS

Rachel aime le réseautage et les amitiés qui se sont développées à cause des 4-H. Par les expositions locales et nationales, les activités communautaires et les ventes, elle a établi de solides connexions avec ses pairs, incluant des éleveurs de Jerseys.

L’AVENIR

Présentement à sa première année de son baccalauréat en sciences agricoles à l’Université de Guelph, Rachel espère devenir vétérinaire pour grands animaux ou nutritionniste animale. Elle est l’une des 12 récipiendaires de la bourse d’étude 4-H TD Canada Trust en 2024. Elle planifie aussi agrandir son troupeau Jersey, Miracle, en se concentrant sur les vaches profitables qui excellent dans l’arène d’exposition.

L’EFFET JERSEY

Rachel présente des Jerseys comme projet 4-H depuis l’âge de 10 ans. Elle avait besoin d’un plus petit veau pour avantager sa propre petite taille et n’était pas satisfaite des jeunes Holsteins de la ferme familiale à l’époque. Ils ont décidé d’acheter une Jersey – pas seulement pour le 4-H mais pour commencer leur propre troupeau Jersey pour augmenter la production de gras à la ferme. Un des aspects préférés de Rachel dans les 4-H était de choisir son projet pour l’année et de travailler à atteindre des résultats positifs aux expositions.

APPRENDRE À FAIRE EN FAISANT

Rachel a débuté dans les 4-H en étant un Bouton de trèfle. Depuis ce temps, elle a pris part à une variété de clubs différents incluant les clubs de science vétérinaire, jugement, couture et pâtisserie, jardinage, lapins et chevaux. La devise des 4-H influence Rachel chaque jour. Sur la ferme, elle s’occupe de l’alimentation et du soin quotidien des Jerseys qu’elle possède. Elle apprend en faisant la tonte de son propre veau en préparation d’une exposition ou en enseignant aux plus jeunes membres pour qu’ils puissent ensuite essayer eux-mêmes ce qui est très valorisant. Elle pense que les 4-H lui ont donné la confiance de continuer à faire toujours de son mieux.

Applications for 2024 FCC Sustainability Incentive Programs are closing soon!

Farm Credit Canada (FCC)’s Sustainability Incentive Programs reward farmers who are successfully adopting environmental best management practices. The programs encourage continued sustainable farming by granting annual incentives of up to $2,000 to FCC customers who meet select criteria. Dairy producers who meet a combination of herd sustainability metrics and proAction™ environmental module results may qualify.

Furthermore, successful applicants could be eligible for an additional incentive of $1,000 sponsored by Starbucks Canada in the categories of Top Achieving and Most Improved. Applicants are eligible to receive incentives in both categories and could receive up to an additional $2,000. This makes a total of up to $4,000 in support of on-farm sustainability activities. Last year, $825,000 was paid out through FCC’s Sustainability Incentive Programs.

Nous vivons une époque d’innovation et de changement constants, tant dans le secteur laitier que dans d’autres domaines. Notre secteur s’est continuellement adapté à l’instabilité mondiale, à l’évolution des politiques publiques tant à l’échelle nationale qu’internationale, à l’évolution des goûts et des préférences des consommateurs et à la nécessité croissante d’intensifier les efforts en matière de durabilité pour atténuer les changements climatiques. Dans ce contexte, les Canadiens ont compris, de manière très concrète, ce que signifie être vulnérable aux problèmes d’approvisionnement et l’importance de la souveraineté alimentaire, alors que nous nous efforçons de protéger notre sécurité alimentaire et notre autosuffisance nationales.

Les programmes d’incitatifs aux pratiques durables de Financement agricole Canada (FAC) récompensent les producteurs qui adoptent avec succès les pratiques de gestion environnementale bénéfiques. Les programmes encouragent le maintien d’une agriculture durable en accordant des incitatifs annuels pouvant aller jusqu’à 2 000 $ aux clients de FAC qui répondent à certains critères. Les producteurs laitiers répondant à une combinaison d’indicateurs en matière de durabilité du troupeau ainsi que de résultats obtenus pour le volet « Environnement » de proActionMD peuvent se qualifier. De plus, les candidats retenus pourraient être admissibles à un incitatif supplémentaire de 1 000 $ commandité par Starbucks Canada dans les catégories « Producteurs les plus performants » et « Producteurs s’étant le plus amélioré ». Les candidats sont admissibles à un incitatif dans chacune des deux catégories et pourraient recevoir jusqu’à 2 000 $ supplémentaires. Au total, ce sont donc jusqu’à 4 000 $ qui pourraient être versés pour soutenir les activités de développement durable à la ferme.

L’année dernière, 825 000 $ ont été versés dans le cadre des programmes d’incitatifs aux pratiques durables de FAC.

Les éléments du troupeau DU SILLON.

Seven years ago, Olivier Marquis and Marie-Christine Fortin began their journey in dairy farming through the Dairy Farm Startup Assistance Program of Les Producteurs de lait du Québec, shortly after graduating in Farm Business Management and Operations from ITA Campus La Pocatière. The family farm, once home to a herd of 250 purebred Boer meat goats, had held a milk quota in the past. In 2017, they took a significant step forward by constructing a simple yet highly efficient and cow-comfort-focused barn, setting the foundation for their dairy operation.

Since then, Du Sillon II SENC has grown steadily through investments in milk quota (now up to 60kg of fat per day), infrastructure upgrades, and land improvements like drainage, leveling, and liming. Additionally, with the help of Olivier’s parents, Colette and Pierre, they operate a farm shop where they sell fresh vegetables and various meats.

From the start, Olivier and Marie-Christine were looking for solid foundation cows to structure their herd.

After seven years of breeding, although most of their cows have good pedigrees from good families, there are some cows that make a lasting impression. Initially, these cows were part of a group simply intended to fill the starting quota. Beyond their good genealogy, they quickly proved themselves not only by their superior production but their temperament, functionality and exceptional type. It was due to these characteristics that the following four cows made ideal models for the Du Sillon herd:

LUXURIOUS KASHMIR

The first notable cow without a doubt is SSF-Mordale Irwin Kashmir ET. Her classification is SUP EX 92 5E 5* with a 96-point Mammary System (MS) and she received a Jersey Canada Lifetime Production award in August 2023. Kashmir has quickly gained recognition thanks to her extraordinary fertility. A member of the famous K family, Kashmir is known to consistently pass on exceptional mammary systems to her progeny. found buyers across various sales, and demand led to the global distribution of her embryos, taking her influence across North America as well as Germany, Italy, Australia, and beyond. In 2021, her daughter, Du Sillon Premier Krunchie ET EX 91, provided a great start to the success of Kashmir's daughters by obtaining title of All-American Milking Yearling for owners Misty Meadow Dairy in Oregon, USA.

Other Kashmir daughters have been so popular that most have been sold to different herds, including Kossip Girl EX 92, Karamilk EX 92 (94 MS) and Kadbury VG 89 max (91 MS). As of today, Kashmir has six daughters classified Excellent, four Very Good and one Good Plus. Heifers sired by Jordan, Laspada, Premier and Respect as well as embryos by Mr Bright, ASKN and Tobefamous are still in the Du Sillon herd. Kashmir has also produced a promising son in Du Sillon Kachow by Vivaldi. Olivier and Marie-Christine have recently had the chance to help market him and have great confidence in his potential despite being an ‘old school’ type bull. The couple looks forward to Kashmir’s ninth natural calf next December.

WISHING ON BERNADETTE

Another impact cow in the Du Sillon herd is Summum Axel Bernadette EX

95 4E. Primarily known for her productive side, Bernadette is month after month at the top of the herd’s best cows for production. Fresh from her sixth calf, her latest projection is 11,536kg milk, 6.76% fat, and 4.04% protein, and there are plans to have her on an embryo transplant program again soon.

Daughters of Bernadette by ASKN, Matt, and Boomerang have great potential to be some of the most productive cows in the herd. One granddaughter of Bernadette, Du Sillon Honeydew Bay, will undoubtedly leave her mark in the herd. She classified VG87 after her first calf has a-day projection of 9056kg milk, 5.08% fat and 3.80% protein. Olivier and Marie-Christine hope to have her on an embryo program next year. The couple has confidence in Bernadette’s progeny, and strongly believe they will make her a multi–Star Brood cow in the years to come.

MACKENZIE THE EXCEPTIONAL

Coming from the M family at Dutch Hollow in New York State, the next impact cow for Du Sillon is Dutch Hollow Ichabod Mackenzie EX 92 3*. She received a Lifetime Production award in May 2024 and consistently transmits her exceptional mammary and productive qualities. Her daughters’

impressive mammary systems are not too heavy and have ideal silky textures. Mackenzie's first two daughters sired by Matt from embryo transplants are classified EX 93 2E: Du Sillon Matt Maybelline ET at Du Sillon and Du Sillon Matt Mccullers ET at Ferme New Jersey in Saint-Basile, QC. Both have high production and superb udders with Mammary System scores of 95 and 93 respectively. Most recently a granddaughter by Channing and a daughter by Vivaldi both classified VG 87 as two-year-olds while each producing over 1,000 combined BCA points. Many Mackenzie daughters and granddaughters are still on the way and the couple has faith that they will have a major impact on the productivity of the herd.

JADE: JEWEL OF LONGEVITY

Last, but certainly not least, is a 2024 Lifetime Production award recipient, Guimo Premier Jade ET EX 91 4E 7*. Jade is a member of a truly remarkable cow family as a daughter of the famous Fermar Paramount Joy EX 95 14*. Joy's family has had many successes, with the global impact of her sons, River Valley Joyride and Guimo Joel ET, reflecting the poise and strength of this prestigious lineage. Jade, who inherited Joy’s outstanding fertility, so far has 35 offspring registered in Canada and is still active.

Among Jade’s offspring is Audibel Jordan ET, a successful AI bull at Semex. Many of her daughters and granddaughters remain in the Du Sillon herd. Three of her direct daughters are classified Excellent and Olivier and Marie-Christine are extremely excited to be expecting one of her Vivaldi daughters this upcoming winter. They will continue to work with Jade’s progeny to sire more offspring from this impact family.

THE PROCESS

Du Sillon has a different approach to each individual mating. They prefer to use bulls from families with high-heritability and look for animals that stand out with genomic indices higher than their parental average. When breeding, Olivier and Marie-Christine target a cow’s weaker genetic traits by choosing sires that will improve these specific characteristics, resulting in balanced cows that transmit well.

When Olivier and Marie-Christine discuss breeding, everything starts with cow families. Whether the focus is on high production, conformation, type, or balanced crossbreeding, the ability to consistently transmit traits across generations—rooted in families carefully selected over years by dedicated breeders—acts as the ultimate proof of reliability. The couple strives to have complete confidence that every heifer born on the farm will realize their genetic potential according to the breeding criteria they have developed; the confidence rooted in each heifer’s genetic background is the quality passed down through their mothers and grandmothers, transmitted from generation to generation.

en Gestion et technologie d’entreprise agricole de l’ITA Campus La Pocatière . La ferme familiale, jadis logeant un troupeau de 250 chèvres de boucherie Boer pur-sang, avait déjà possédé du quota de lait. En 2017, ils ont pris un grand pas vers l’avant en construisant une étable simple mais très efficace, axée sur le confort des vaches, pour établir la fondation de leur entreprise laitière.

Depuis ce temps, Du Sillon II SENC a grandi tranquillement par ses investissements dans du quota laitier (maintenant plus de 60kg de gras par jour), des améliorations aux infrastructures et au terrain par du drainage, du nivellement et du chaulage. En plus, avec l’aide des parents d’Olivier, Colette et Pierre, ils gèrent un kiosque à la ferme où ils vendent des légumes frais et une variété de viandes.

Du tout début, Olivier et Marie-Christine cherchaient une fondation solide pour construire leur troupeau. Après sept années d’élevage, même si la plupart de leurs vaches ont une bonne généalogie provenant de bonnes familles, certaines vaches ont laissé leur marque. Initialement ces vaches faisaient partie d’un groupe simplement pour pouvoir remplir le quota de départ. Au-delà de leur bonne généalogie, elles ont rapidement fait leurs preuves non seulement par leur production

supérieure mais par leur tempérament, leur fonctionnalité et leur conformation exceptionnelle. C’est grâce à ces caractéristiques que les quatre vaches suivantes furent des modèles idéales pour le troupeau Du Sillon :

LUXURIOUS KASHMIR

La première vache digne de mention est sans aucun doute SSF-Mortdale Irwin Kashmir ET. Sa classification est SUP EX 92 5E 5* avec 96 points pour le système mammaire (SM) et elle a reçu un prix de Production à vie de Jersey Canada en août 2023. Kashmir a rapidement gagné en popularité grâce à son extraordinaire fertilité. et la demande a mené à la distribution mondiale de ses embryons, étendant son influence partout en Amérique du Nord ainsi qu’en Allemagne, en Italie, en Australie et ailleurs. En 2021, sa fille, Du Sillon Premier Krunchie ET EX 91, a fourni un bon départ pour les réussites des files de Kashmir en obtenant le titre de All-American Milking Yearling (Un An en lactation Tout Américain) pour ses propriétaires, Misty Meadow Dairy de l’Oregon, É-.U.

D’autres filles de Kashmir ont été si populaires que la plupart ont été vendues dans différents troupeaux incluant Kossip Girl EX 92, Karamilk EX 92 (94 SM) et Kadbury TB 89 max (91 SM). Aujourd’hui, Kashmir a six filles classifiées Excellentes, quatre Très Bonnes et une Bonne Plus. Des génisses provenant de taureaux comme Jordan, Laspada, Premier et Respect ainsi que des embryons par Mr Bright, ASKN et Tobefamous font toujours partie du troupeau Du Sillon. Kashmir a aussi donné un fils prometteur, Du Sillon Kachow par Vivaldi. Olivier et Marie-Christine ont récemment eu la chance de le mettre en marché et ont grande confiance en son potentiel malgré qu’il soit le type de taureau un peu ‘Old School’. Le couple attend avec impatience le neuvième veau naturel de Kashmir en décembre prochain.

MISONS SUR BERNADETTE

Une autre vache qui a eu un impact sur le troupeau Du Sillon est Summum Axel Bernadette EX 95 4E. Reconnue principalement pour sa production, Bernadette est, mois après mois, en haut de la liste des meilleures vaches du troupeau pour la production. Fraîche de son sixième veau, sa dernière projection est de 11 536 kg lait, 6,76 % gras et 4,04 % protéine. On planifie l’utiliser encore bientôt dans un programme de transplantation d’embryons.

Les filles de Bernadette par ASKN, Matt et Boomerang ont le grand potentiel de devenir certaines des vaches les plus productives du troupeau. Une petite-fille de Bernadette, Du Sillon Honeydew Bay, laissera sans doute sa marque dans le troupeau. Elle est classifiée TB 87 après son premier veau et a une projection de 9056 kg lait, 5,08 % gras et 3,80 % protéine. Olivier et Marie-Christine espèrent l’inclure dans un programme d’embryons l’an prochain. Le couple a confiance dans la progéniture de Bernadette et croit fermement qu’elle deviendra une vache souche à plusieurs étoiles dans les années à venir.

MACKENZIE L’EXCEPTIONNELLE

De la famille M de Dutch Hollow dans l’état de New York, la prochaine vache d’impact pour Du Sillon est Dutch Hollow Ichabod Mackenzie EX 92 3*. Elle a reçu un prix de Production à vie en mai 2024 et transmet avec constance ses qualités mammaires et productives exceptionnelles. Le système mammaire impressionnant de ses filles n’est peu volumineux et a une texture soyeuse idéale.

Sillon et Du Sillon Matt Mccullers ET à la Ferme New Jersey à Saint-Basile, QC. Toutes deux ont une haute production et des pis superbes avec des scores pour le Système mammaire de 95 et 93 respectivement. Plus récemment, une petite-fille par Channing et une fille par Vivaldi ont toutes deux été classifiées TB 87 à deux ans, chacune produisant un total de plus de 1000 points combinés de MCR. Plusieurs filles et petites-filles de Mackenzie sont encore en route et le couple croit qu’elles auront un impact majeur sur la productivité de leur troupeau.

JADE : JOYAU DE LONGÉVITÉ

La dernière, mais non la moindre, est une gagnant d’un prix de Production à vie en 2024 : Guimo Premier Jade ET EX 91 4E 7*. Jade est membre de la famille de vaches remarquable de la renomée Fermar Paramount Joy EX 95 14*. La famille de Joy a connu beaucoup de succès avec l’impact international de ses fils River Valley Joyride et Guimo Joel ET, reflétant l’aplomb et la force de cette généalogie prestigieuse. Jade, qui a hérité de la fertilité remarquable de Joy, a présentement 35 descendants enregistrés au Canada et elle est toujours active.

Parmi la progéniture de Jade, on retrouve Audibel Jordan ET, un taureau d’IA recherché chez Semex. Plusieurs de ses filles et petites-filles demeurent dans le troupeau Du Sillon. Trois de ses filles directes sont classifiées Excellentes et Olivier et Marie-Christine sont extrêmement excités d’attendre une de ses filles par Vivaldi l’hiver prochain. Ils continuent à travailler avec la progéniture de Jade pour obtenir d’autres descendants de cette famille d’impact.

LE PROCESSUS

Du Sillon a une approche différente pour chaque accouplement. Ils préfèrent utiliser des taureaux de familles qui transmettent bien et cherchent des animaux qui se démarqueront par leurs indices génomiques plus élevés que leur moyenne parentale. Lorsqu’ils accouplent, Olivier et Marie-Christine visent les points les plus faibles d’une vache en choisissant des taureaux qui amélioreront ces caractéristiques spécifiques et donneront des vaches équilibrées qui transmettront bien.

Lorsqu’Olivier et Marie-Christine discutent d’élevage, tout part des familles de vaches. Que le but soit la haute production, la conformation, le type ou un croisement équilibré, la capacité à transmettre les traits avec constance au fil des générations – enraciné dans des familles soigneusement sélectionnées au fil des ans par des éleveurs dévoués – agit comme la preuve ultime de fiabilité. Le couple s’efforce d’avoir une confiance complète que chaque génisse née sur la ferme réalisera son potentiel génétique selon les critères d’élevage qu’ils ont développé. La confiance enracinée dans chaque généalogie génétique d’une génisse est la qualité qui est léguée par leurs mères et grand-mères, transmises de génération en génération.

Fermented Dairy Foods: Opportunity and Collaboration with Ontario Jersey Dairy Farmers

WHAT’S DRIVING INNOVATION IN FERMENTED DAIRY FOODS

Innovation continues to drive the dairy sector where fluid milk consumption in North America declines, but overall dairy consumption is rising, strongest in value-added products. Specifically, fermented dairy products embody health, convenience and a diversity of flavours and textures that resonate with discerning consumers. Fermented products such as yogurts, kefirs, quality cheeses, and skyr are exciting a whole new demographic. Yogurt is not only a morning choice, but an anytime healthy meal. The Greek yogurt category is testament to this with Circana market research indicating per capita consumption of the category having grown ~ 142% over the past 25 years in North America, while per capita cheese consumption has doubled over the past 20 years.

For many North American consumers, dairy products are a food staple in their grocery purchases. Unique demographics across North America, whether based on ethnicity, or budgets, are influencing the production of dairy products, and fermented dairy products in particular. Lactose-free, heritage production methods, and richer, creamier versions (which bodes well for Jersey farmers) are resonating for consumers. Fermented dairy products work because of their ‘clean label’ amid growing concern over highly processed foods. Movement towards wholesome indulgence is aware of both health and rich taste. Fermented dairy products help feeling good from the inside out, and also satisfy gut health, nutrition and immunity.

GROWING CITIZEN AWARENESS, SCIENTIFIC EVOLUTION + REGULATORY PRESSURE

A broader set of factors is driving a deeper context for growth in fermented dairy products. Various international studies continue to quantify the impact of global food production, and the dairy sector in particular. Policymakers are trying

to square the nutritional value of foods with the environmental impact of those choices. Climate-related regulations mean a growing need for food producers and processors to meet Environmental, Social, and Governance standards.

One countercurrent to dairy farming is the growing scientific-innovation-consumer dynamic of plant-based, dairy alternatives. This has resulted in a proliferation of dairy-alternative cheeses, spreads, ice creams, butters, and milks in the marketplace over the past decade. However, trends in plant-based dairy alternatives show an overall decline in consumption for 2023, according to Circana research. Meanwhile many global dairy processors are remaining flexible and adapting to consumer sentiment. Scientific advancements in precision fermentation have enabled the isolation of milk compounds such as casein and proteins using modified microbes. One example of this is lactoferrin, an immune boosting protein found in small quantities naturally in cow’s milk and recognized for its powerful benefits to immunity, iron regulation, and gut health, which is now being produced using precision fermentation.

Another unique development is the utilization of whey to add a product offering to the dairy value chain.A significant amount of whey is produced from dairy manufacturing, and often this by-product is discarded. New York-based The Spare Food Company take whey and combine it with fruits, spices, and honey to create a fermented, shelf-stable, effervescent drink. Massachusetts-based Superfrau ‘upcycle’ liquid whey to create carbonated beverages that are infused with natural flavours, while US-based Wheyward Spirit utilize whey sourced from western dairy farms to create fermented spirits.

LINKING DAIRY FARMS AND DAIRY PROCESSORS

As part of societal concern with health and sustainability, food product developers are seeking transparency relating to the origins of raw materials, placing increased empha-

sis on the relationship between dairy farms and dairy products. Sustainably produced ingredients will increasingly define regulatory, consumer, investor and brand criteria. Tools and software, such as Sustell, link products with processors by distinguishing their value proposition, and under regulatory pressure, financially incentivize farm suppliers with tangible practices related to their carbon footprint, animal welfare, or biodiversity for example. Associated premiums will increasingly be attached to these on-farm initiatives.

Scotland-based farm, The Ethical Dairy, is a unique example of a dairy farm that transitioned to a natural process management system. The farm leaves calves with their mothers for twice as long as the UK industry standard, and markets itself as a 100% pasture-fed, regenerative, net-zero, organic dairy farm, where biodiversity is integrated into the economic feasibility of operations. Farm tours are offered to the public and ice cream produced on-farm. The farm reduces production costs associated with tonnes of soluble fertilizers, lime, pesticides, antibiotics, vaccines, minerals and feed.

Closer to home, farmers are increasingly realizing the opportunities of selling products from farm store-fronts as part of a growing agri-tourism economy in Canada. The Bolduc family in southern Quebec, and their ‘Fromagerie La Station’ produce cheese, operate an on-farm shop and a tasting centre, and offer tours. The farm raises 147 organic cows on 600 acres, and also makes maple syrup. The fromagerie won 'Best in Show' at the 2024 American Cheese Society competition, and its cheeses are rind washed by robots. Their hay production (a mix of grasses with clover and alfalfa) is monitored for temperature and moisture, as this affects milk quality. Adhering to industry regulations, the fromagerie pipes milk from the dairy barn, ‘sells it to the provincial quota management system’, and then buys it back to process quota holdings in their dairy facility. An example of innovation in Canadian fermented dairy products at its best.

CONSCIENCE ACCRUE DES CONSOMMATEURS, ÉVOLUTION SCIENTIFIQUE + PRESSION RÈGLEMENTAIRE

JOINDRE LES FERMES LAITIÈRES ET LES TRANSFORMATEURS LAITIERS

Émanant d’une préoccupation sociale pour la santé et la durabilité, les développeurs de produits alimentaires recherchent la transparence dans la provenance de leurs matériaux de base, plaçant l’emphase sur la relation entre les fermes laitières et les produits laitiers. Les ingrédients produits de façon durable et qui sont nutritifs définiront de plus en plus les critères de réglementation, ceux des consommateurs, des investisseurs et ceux reliés à la marque. Les outils et logiciels, comme Sustell, relient les produits des fermes aux transformateurs. Les compagnies laitières, en se distinguant par leur valeur proposée et faisant face à la pression réglementaire, incitent financièrement les fermes fournisseuses à adopter des pratiques tangibles reliées à l’empreinte carbonique, le bien-être animal ou la biodiversité par exemple. Des primes associées seront de plus en plus rattachées à ces initiatives à la ferme.

The Spare Food Company, basé à New York, prend le lactosérum, le mélange à des fruits, des épices et du miel pour créer une boisson effervescente fermentée et stable sur la tablette. Tyler Hendriks is a 3rd generation dairy farmer. His grandparents, John and Corey Hendriks, immigrated from the Netherlands in the 1950’s. They were able to provide both of their sons with the opportunity to dairy farm. Tyler's uncle Gerard took over the home farm and his dad, Henry, was able to start his own. After graduating from the Ridgetown College of Agricultural Technology, Tyler purchased his uncle Gerard’s Holstein cows and quota and took over milking at the home farm. Tyler’s dad continued to grow his half Holstein, half Jersey herd on his respective farm.

In 2016, the decision was made to build a new free-stall barn across the road from Henry’s farm and increase the quota through the Dairy Farmers of Canada’s parent to child top-up program. Tyler was then able to purchase the Jaspar Jersey herd and began milking them, in the new facility, alongside his dad’s Jerseys in 2017. Over time he also purchased eight original flush cows from the Progenesis Semex seedstock program that proved to be very successful. His best cow from that program was Ahlem Megatron Tracy – 727211821 who produced six daughters and over 80,000 kg on seven lactations with an average BCA of 326-351-348. It was through the success of these high index animals that Tyler realized the value of using indexes to improve his herd. Today, Tyler runs the farm alongside his dad with the help of five part-time hired hands for milking. His wife, Emily, also helps around her fulltime job schedule with TD as an Ag Analyst.

FARM & FACILITIES

The Hendriks herd is housed in a freestall sand bedded barn with tunnel ventilation. This main barn has three milking groups, a dry cow group and a calving area. The milking groups are milked three times a day in a double-8 parallel milking parlour. Tyler houses his calves in a large drive shed, and eventually weans them into a renovated pig barn. From there the heifers are moved across the road to his dad’s old milking facility. Feed for the cows is stored in four bunks. His forage consists of BMR corn silage, which is half of the fed rations, and alfalfa haylage cropped between the farm's 250 owned acres and the 100 acres of rented land. His feed program also consists of ground corn, canola meal and a protein/mineral blend. Tyler uses the Topcon feed software system to manage and audit his rations and feed mixes. He can adjust a group or a ration from his office computer and these changes get sent to the mixer scale via the cloud. His dad prepares the feed mixes with ease using the updated scale and phone app.

WHY JERSEYS?

Since his dad had a 50% Jersey herd, it was an easy decision to switch to Jerseys when the opportunity arose. Tyler finds they respond well to high management in the areas of reproduction and feed efficiency. His current pregnancy rate is at 38% and he finds that the early maturity is a bonus for the breed as he’s able to calve out his heifers at a year and nine months old. tifying the extra cattle needed to fill the same quota as Holsteins. Tyler is close to achieving 21 kg dry matter intake and 45 kg energy corrected milk.

MANAGEMENT & TOOLS

For calf management, Tyler uses a refractometer to test his colostrum to ensure quality and will add dry colostrum if needed. A calf’s first colostrum feeding consists of three liters that are tubed, and they are fed more two litres at their second feeding. They are then fed pellets with straw added and are housed in individual pens in a well-ventilated shed with timed lighting.

The farm currently has 190 heifers to support a growing business of cattle sales. It consistently sees double digit sales per month and after all orders are filled, excess fresh animals are sold unseen at set prices to a cattle dealer. To achieve this high number of heifers, Tyler breeds 95% to sexed semen and 5% to beef semen. He uses a Double-OvSynch program with a voluntary waiting period of 70 days to assist with breeding and holds a contract with URUS for semen purchases.

Tyler also uses the Alta COW WATCH activity system on both cows and heifers to detect heats and various other health and herd performance trends. DairyComp is used as an overall management tool to maintain management lists, vet lists, cattle sales lists, traceability, proAction and calf registrations.

Although Tyler does not classify, he is a strong believer in the benefits of genomic testing. 100% of the herd is genomic tested by four months using the ear tissue method through Ian VandenBerg at Genex. He uses Net Merit (NM$) values as his main tool for ranking his animals and will price his sales accordingly. His lowest ranking animals get sold stateside through a cattle dealer.

ACHIEVEMENTS & WHAT IS TO COME

Tyler has received numerous Jersey Canada production certificates and awards and was also the top Canadian production Jersey herd in 2023. He is proud to be a two-time Platinum winner (2020 and 2023) in the Dairy Cattle Reproduction Council awards. He does not seek

awards but sees them a byproduct of his goal to increase production.

Tyler is always digging into the numbers as well as following webinars and industry experts to gain as much knowledge to be the best he can be. He enjoys communicating with like-minded dairy farmers to compare practices and help create benchmarks for his operation. His goals for the future include reaching 11,000 kg per cow while pushing his SNF ratio closer to 2.0 to achieve maximum dollars per kg of quota. He’d like to continue to grow his fresh cow sales to help continue the growth of the operation. Furthermore, his plans for 2026 include building a new barn beside his existing barn so he can have all his cattle in one location instead of housing animals across the road in his dad’s old facility.

Au fil du temps, il a aussi acheté huit autres vaches pour les récoltes d’embryons du programme de semence Progenesis de Semex qui ont très bien réussi. son troupeau. Aujourd’hui, Tyler gère la ferme avec son père et l’aide de cinq employés à temps partiel pour la traite. Son épouse, Emily, aide aussi selon l’horaire de son travail à temps plein chez TD comme analyste agricole.

FERME & INSTALLATIONS

Le troupeau Hendriks est logé dans une étable en stabulation libre sur litière de sable et ventilation tunnel. L’étable principale a trois groupes en lactation, un groupe de vaches sèches et un espace de vêlage. Les groupes en lactation sont traits trois fois par jour dans un salon de traite double 8 parallèle. Tyler loge ses veaux dans une grande remise et lorsqu’ils sont sevrés, il les déplace dans une porcherie rénovée. De là, les génisses sont déplacées de l’autre côté de la rue dans l’ancienne étable laitière de son père.

Les aliments des vaches sont entreposés dans quatre silos-couloirs. Ses fourrages consistent en ensilage de maïs à nervure brune (BMR), qui forme la moitié de la ration, et de l’ensilage de luzerne récolté sur les 250 acres appartenus par les fermes et les 100 acres de terrain loué. Son programme d’alimentation comprend aussi du maïs moulu, du tourteau de canola et un mélange protéine/minéraux. Tyler utilise le logiciel Topcon pour gérer et surveiller ses rations et ses mélanges. Il peut ajuster un groupe ou une ration de son ordinateur de bureau et ses changements sont envoyés à la balance de son mélangeur via le nuage informatique. Son père prépare les mélanges d’aliments facilement en utilisant la mise à jour de la balance et l’application de son téléphone.

POURQUOI LES JERSEYS?

Puisque son père avait déjà un troupeau composé à 50 % de Jerseys, ce fut une décision facile de se convertir aux Jerseys lorsque l’opportunité s’est présentée. Tyler trouve qu'elles répondent bien à la gestion serrée dans les secteurs de la reproduction et de l’efficacité alimentaire. Son taux actuel de gestation est à 38 % et il trouve que la maturité précoce est un avantage pour la race car il peut faire vêler ses génisses à l’âge d’un an et 9 mois. L’efficacité alimentaire des Jersey fut le levier principal pour justifier les animaux supplémentaires requis pour remplir le même quota que les Holsteins. Tyler est presqu’à 21 kg de matière sèche ingérée et 45 kg d’énergie en lait corrigé.

GESTION & OUTILS

Pour la gestion des veaux, Tyler utilise un réfractomètre pour tester son colostrum pour s’assurer de sa qualité et ajoutera du colostrum en poudre au besoin. Le premier repas de colostrum d’un veau est de trois litres qui sont donnés avec un tube,

puis le veau reçoit deux autres litres à son deuxième repas. Les veaux reçoivent des granules avec de la paille ajoutée et sont logés dans les parcs individuels dans une remise bien ventilée équipée de lumière sur minuterie.

La ferme compte présentement 190 génisses pour supporter l’entreprise grandissante de ventes d’animaux. Tyler voit constamment des ventes dans les deux chiffres chaque mois et toutes les commandes sont remplies. Les animaux en surplus sont vendus à un commerçant d’animaux, sans être vus et à un prix déterminé. Pour obtenir ce grand nombre de génisses, 95 % des femelles sont saillies avec de la semence sexée. Le 5 % restant est sailli avec des animaux de boucherie. Il utilise un programme Double-OvSynch avec une période d’attente volontaire de 70 jours pour assister à l’élevage et possède un contrat avec URUS pour l’achat de semence.

tout autre problème de santé et les tendances du troupeau. DairyComp est utilisé comme outil de gestion général pour maintenir les listes de gestion, de vétérinaire, de ventes d’animaux, la traçabilité, proAction et l’enregistrement des veaux.

Même si Tyler n’utilise pas la classification, il croit fermement dans les bénéfices des tests génomiques. 100 % du troupeau a reçu un test génomique avant l’âge de quatre mois en utilisant la méthode de tissus de l’oreille avec l’aide d’Ian VandeBerg chez Genex. Il utilise les valeurs Net Merit (NM$) comme outil principal pour classer ses animaux et ajustera le prix de vente selon le résultat. Les animaux recevant les plus bas résultats seront vendus avec l’aide d’un commerçant d’animaux.

ACCOMPLISSEMENTS & CE QUI S’EN VIENT

Tyler a reçu de nombreux certificats de production et de prix de Jersey Canada et son troupeau a obtenu le titre de meilleure production canadienne pour un troupeau Jersey en 2023. Il est fier d’avoir remporté deux fois le prix Platine

(2020 et 2023) du Dairy Cattle Reproduction Council. Il ne court pas les prix, mais les voit comme un sous-produit de son objectif d’augmenter la production.

Tyler examine toujours ses chiffres et suit des webinaires et des experts de l’industrie pour recueillir le plus de connaissances pour faire encore mieux. Il aime communiquer avec d’autres producteurs laitiers qui pensent comme lui pour comparer les pratiques et aider à créer des comparaisons pour son entreprise. Ses buts pour l’avenir inclus d’atteindre

11 000 kg par vache tout en poussant son ratio SNG le plus près possible de 2,0 pour obtenir le maximum de dollars par kg de quota. Il aime continuer à faire grandir ses ventes de vaches fraîches pour aider à continuer à faire croître l’entreprise. De plus, ses plans pour 2026 comprennent la construction d’une nouvelle étable à côté de l’étable existante pour qu’il puisse avoir tous ses animaux à un seul endroit au lieu d’avoir à loger des animaux de l’autre côté de la rue dans le vieux bâtiment de son père.

IN MEMORIAM/ EN MÉMOIRE

Myrtle Sharp began her life in Foxwarren, Manitoba, as one of ten children. Her mother, Mary, raised the family single-handedly following the early passing of Myrtle's father, Charles Fleming, who passed before his youngest child was born. It was on the prairies of Manitoba where Myrtle and her siblings grew up under the care of their matriarch mother, learning to garden, cook, sew, and make the best of what they had.

Myrtle joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, and soon after, married her first husband, Doug. Later in life, Myrtle met and married Ron Sharp, the love of her life, and together they built a wonderful life on Marvelside Farm in Marvelville, Ontario. While they farmed their beloved Jersey cows, Myrtle also worked for the Department of Justice, raised a blended family, helped with farm chores, and ran both an antique shop and a chip wagon. In later years, after they sold the cows, Myrtle ran a successful bed and breakfast.

She was active in her community as a member of the Russell Curling Club and the Marvelville Community Club. After Ron's passing, Myrtle sold the farm and moved to Vancouver Island, British Columbia. There, for the next 25 years, she embarked on a life of adventure joining a dragon boat team, learning to clog dance, living on a houseboat, picking blackberries, making wine, and exploring the U.S. and Mexico in her RV.

where she lived for 17 years. She filled her days tending to her garden, creating beautiful window boxes, and entertaining neighbors with delicious meals and a glass or two of wine. Her gatherings were always full of laughter, good food, and lively debates with her cherished friends Carla, Connie, Trish, Karen, Jim, and Lois.

Myrtle leaves behind her three children, Doug (Tanya), Barbara (Jerry), and Dorothy (Julio), who will carry on her adventurous spirit and zest for life. She is also survived by six grandchildren, including two, Jennifer and Dougie, who are heartbroken and shared a particularly close bond with her and whose lives were intricately woven into her tapestry of life. Myrtle is survived by her four stepchildren, Pat , Val (Mike), Bill (Judy), and Sharon (Jack), along with their families. She also leaves behind a wide circle of friends from her Jersey family and the communities of Russell and Ladysmith. Of her siblings, Myrtle is survived by Walter, Irene, Daisy, and Charlene, and their families.

When Myrtle's health could no longer allow her to live alone, she spent her final months with her daughter Dorothy and family in Mexico, accompanied by her faithful companion, fur baby Boogie.

A celebration of Myrtle's life will take place next summer on the beach in Ladysmith, B.C. where her ashes and those of her loyal dogs, Bear and Aries, will be scattered in the ocean with an armful of pink roses, in front of the cottage she loved so dearly.

Myrtle Sharp a débuté sa vie à Foxwarren, Manitoba, dans une famille de dix enfants. Myrtle a rejoint l’aviation canadienne et, peu après, a épousé son premier mari, Doug. Plus tard, Myrtle a rencontré et marié Ron Sharp, l’amour de sa vie, et ensemble ils se sont construit une belle vie sur la ferme Marvelside à Marvelville, Ontario. Pendant qu’ils prenaient soin de leurs vaches Jerseys adorées, Myrtle travaillait également pour le ministère de la Justice, élevait une famille recomposée, aidait aux travaux de la ferme et gérait un magasin d’antiquités et une friterie. Plusieurs années plus tard, lorsqu’ils ont vendu les vaches, Myrtle a tenu un populaire gîte touristique.

Elle était active dans sa communauté comme membre du Club de Curling de Russell et du Club communautaire de Marvelville. Après le décès de Ron, Myrtle a vendu la ferme et est déménagée à l’Île de Vancouver en Colombie-Britannique. C’est là, pendant les 25 prochaines années, qu’elle a débuté sa vie pleine d’aventures en se joignant à une équipe de bateau dragon, a appris la sabotière (clog dance), a vécu sur un bateau-maison, a ramassé des mûres, a fait du vin et a exploré les États-Unis et le Mexique en VR.

Myrtle s’est éventuellement installée dans une charmante petite maison près de la mer à Ladysmith, C.-B., où elle a vécu pendant 17 ans. Elle passait ses journées en s’occupant de son jardin, en créant de merveilleuses boîtes à fleurs et en recevant ses voisins pour de délicieux repas et un ou deux verres de vin. Ses rassemblements étaient toujours remplis de rires, de bonne nourriture et de débats animés avec ses précieux amis Carla, Connie, Trish, Karen, Jim et Lois.

Olivia (17) is the eldest daughter and second eldest child of our son Glenn Dorie and his wife, Amy. They and their eight children live in Martintown, about ten minutes from us and keep a variety of livestock. Morgan is their house cow they bought from us at Will-a-Way Farms, Williamstown, several years ago and she supplies milk, cheese and butter for the family. The older kids and Amy take turns milking her with a small vacuum pump and single milker. So far Morgan has had all bull calves for them which are raised as meat steers.

Au début août de cette année, lors de la 214e édition de l’exposition de Williamstown, la foire qui opère depuis le plus longtemps au Canada, Olivia a exposé cette image de l’œil de Morgan. La classe était 20A-Teen Art (Art adolescent) – ouverte à tous les jeunes de 13 à 19 ans –Section 4 "I've Got My Eye on You" (J’ai l’œil sur toi) - un dessin rapproché d’un œil humain ou non. Son dessin de l’œil de Morgan a remporté la première place et a maintenant place d’honneur sur le mur de notre cuisine.

She also currently sits on the Jersey Quebec board of directors, allowing her to communicate with Jersey producers about their genetics and passion for the breed. Marianne would like to use her education to work in agriculture as a genetics representative or inseminator before pursuing her ultimate goal of taking over the family farm, Ferme Rejebel Inc.

Elle siège présentement au conseil d’administration de Jersey Québec ce qui lui permet de communiquer avec des producteurs de Jerseys au sujet de leur génétique et de leur passion pour la race. Emily is entering her 3rd year at the University of Guelph and is enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture undergraduate degree program, majoring in Honours Agriculture. Emily fell for the Jersey breed after getting a job working at a local Jersey farm, she then began showing Jerseys in 4-H and was a Jersey Ontario Ambassador in 2023. Emily plans to pursue a career in animal health, nutrition, genetics or agronomy upon graduation.

Dr. Chris Church

Dr Chris Church attended the University of Guelph for his Animal Science (OAC'96) and Veterinary degrees (OVC'00) and practiced with the Tavistock Veterinarians for 15 years. He focused on dairy production medicine, embryo transfer, and IVF. He led their data reporting and co-led a quarterly management club.

In 2015, he joined Elanco Animal Health (Canada) to focus on Transition cow health but later moved to their Process Efficiency group. This team worked with large farms, mills, and other agricultural businesses to help make them more profitable.

Chris realized his 'Why' is to help dairy producers succeed, so he returned to Guelph for an MBA in agriculture to better help farms relate productivity with profitability.

Saturday Evening, Banquet & Awards

The Annual General Meeting Banquet will take place Saturday night with dinner at 6:30 pm. All-Ontario Awards and Jersey Ontario Production Awards will be presented following dinner. A silent and live auction will also be held.

Congratulations to Blair and Jaime Weeks of Weeksdale Holsteins in Breadalbane, Prince Edward Island for winning Grand Champion at the National Jersey Show at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto with Intense Joel Delphie ET. Total cost = $488 (plus applicable taxes and development fees)

The same registrations done at the lowest registration cost (0-3 months):

14 heifers registered at 0-3 months = $280 (plus applicable taxes and development fees)

Total saving is $208
