Editor’s Corner

For 34 years, the Manitoba Angus Outlook has been a staple for the Manitoba Angus Association membership connecting them to the news from around the province.

In the spring of 2006, the board hired Grant Moffat of Forrest as the new editor. It had been previously produced by Ruby Simpson and Krista Bouchard. Unfortunately, in the summer of 2006, Grant went missing while going on a fishing trip up north. A true tragedy for the Livestock community.

In fall of 2006, Lois McRae served as President of the Manitoba Angus Association and Arlene Kirkpatrick served as the MAA Secretary. Lois and Arlene put together the Fall issue of the Outlook that year in hopes that Grant would be found. Since the fall of 2006 till May 2025, we have had the honour of producing for the Angus breeders in Manitoba and across Canada, THE MANITOBA ANGUS OUTLOOK.

Special thank you to all our past advertisers, contributors of stories and articles, Prairie Pistol Design for the cover pages and anyone who supported the Outlook over the years.

Happy spring everyone,

What a great start to spring, with moderately cool temperatures and some added moisture I ’m hopeful that once things warm up the grass will start to grow rapidly. Minus the extreme cold temps we experienced in early February, its been a pretty good winter and spring thus far. The reports I ’ve received on calving have been great, the majority of producers I’ve spoken up to have been pleased with the current weather conditions which has led to healthy calves and minimal calf mortalities. I look forward to what the year will bring and seems like we will be starting the year off in a good position.

We are only a month away from the Canadian Angus Convention which will be held June 11 -13 at the Fort Garry Hotel in Winnipeg. W e have a full schedule for the event and we anxiously await all the great memories that we will get to create at this years convention . From the AGM, the Foundation Auction, the Human Rights Museum and the Comedy Show with comedian Matt Falk, I am excited to get to enjoy thi s annual event with you all. If you are a breeder or producer looking to network with other Angus industry people from across Canada, there is no greater opportunity to do exactly that. Registration is open and you can do so at the Canadian Angus website.

Some other exciting news, the board decided that we will be looking to other Summer Fairs to host the summer Angus Gold Show. For 2025, the Carberry Fair will be the host of the Angus Gold show, we look forward to working with their committee and having a great show at a new location. Thank you to the Harding Fair committee for being our host the last several years.

Finally, I want to acknowledge Lois McRae and Arlene Kirkpatrick. This is their last edition of the Outlook as editors, and I want to formally thank them for all the hard work they have put in the last number of years to ensure this magazine informs Angus producers of all the important news in the MB Angus industry. Their dedication to the Angus industry is paramount and we are grateful for all that t hey have done not just to keep this magazine alive the last number of years but all they have done for the Angus industry.

I look forward to seeing you all at convention and wish you all a wonderful spring.

Cheers,

Devin Boitson MAA President

She has been an active supporter of 4-H programs and has met many people in the cattle industry over the years, besides knowing many people in the Angus business.

We are sure that Ella’s experience will be a great asset to the continued success of the Manitoba Angus Outlook. CANADIAN JUNIOR AMBASSADOR REPORT

Hello spring! Last time you heard from me I recapped what kept me busy through the fall - from Farmfair to Agribition to the Certified Angus Beef Youth Beef Leaders Seminar. I was also looking forward to Canadian Junior Angus GOAL Conference and the Zoetis World Angus Youth Competition at this year ’s Forum in

I had a great time at GOAL Conference in Saskatoon from February 15 -17th. I got to know many new juniors, shared what I’ve been up to as Ambassador, and gained a volume of new knowledge on personal development and Canadian beef. I can ’t believe it was my last GOAL, but with that, I got to reflect on the significant and positive impact the event has had on me over the last 4 years. Juniors attend as many GOALs as you can, parents encourage your kids to, and if you get the chance to attend soak up every experience. From walking through bull pens beneath the hills in B.C. to teaching Americans how to skate in -40, you will make memories that will last a lifetime.

At the beginning of April, I took in the Friday and Saturday of the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair. It was great to see the quali ty of cattle, showmen, and the busyness of the up -and-coming Manitoba juniors. My family brought 3 heifers to town. I am so proud to see the passion fo r livestock care and handling shining through in my sisters, Ryder and Clary. It was Clary ’s first show and as I walked around the ring with her and her heifer, it was one of those moments in which I was reminded how special our industry is and how lucky we are to be able to pass o ur lifestyle onto the next generation.

As I write this I am just 2 weeks away from my departure to Australia, how time flies! Currently, I am preparing for the trip and wrapping up my winter term courses. Then I will have completed my third year at University of Saskatchewan.

I am a member on the Canadian Junior Angus Team going to the Zoetis World Angus Youth Competition in Australia. In terms of w hat I’ll be up to while I’m in Australia, the information they ’ve provided our teams with, regarding the program has been limited. They are keeping us all on our toes! We know it starts 2 pm on April 28th in Sydney, NSW, and ends at 4 pm on May 8th in Brisbane, QLD. Our evaluations will include, but not be limited to, meat judging, public speaking, and agriculture “modules” held at the Cattle Expo in Tamworth. These modules may include bovine reproduction, animal health, stocking handling, and farm maintenance. With teams attending from all over the world, I am incredibly eager to learn from others, build connections, and immerse myself in Australian agriculture.

I will make the trip back to Canada from Brisbane on May 16. From there I will settle into my new summer position as part of a research team led by Dr. Angela Bedard -Haughn (PhD) at the University of Saskatchewan. We will be exploring soil carbon mapping across land ma naged for both grain and livestock in Saskatchewan. My final event as Ambassador will be National Convention on June 12 & 13th in Winni peg

I would also like to take a moment to thank Lois McRae and Arlene Kirkpatrick for their dedication to the Outlook since 2006. These fabulous ladies were some of the first individuals I exchanged contact with in the Angus community. I would like to extend my gratitud e for the impact they have had. For the past 19 years Arlene and Lois have been the first line for ensuring our Juniors have access to all the information on events and awards they could need. This has allowed Junior members like myself to make the most of the opportunities available in ou r organization.

Juniors - don’t forget Showdown is July 24 -26th in Stettler, AB. Trucking award deadline is May 25, travel bursary June 1. I hope to see many of you in Winnipeg for Convention come June. How special it will be to complete my term as Ambassador at home, in the province w here my passion for the Angus breed and business started.

If you want more information on Junior Angus programs and opportunities go to cdnangus.ca/canadian -junior-angus

Take care,

Lainie Muir (204 -841-1105)

GOAL REPORT 2025

Over the weekend of February 15-17, 2025, 4 Manitoba Jr members made their way to Saskatoon to take part in the Canadian Junior Angus GOAL Conference. Throughout the weekend we heard from a variety of speakers and topics. These included; Kathy Larson who spok e about financial factors of a cow calf operation, Shane Rogers presented on the importance of story telling especially from pasture to platform. That evening we engaged in a food etiquette course presented by Crystal MacLeod as well as the formal banquet. Once the banquet wa s complete, we listened to the Foundation Legacy Scholarships panel discussion, this was very informative and entertaining to hear the to p 5 contestants. The next day we heard from Levi Hurlbert – The Importance of Youth in Today’s Cattle Business, Garner Deobald – The Bovigen Story, Brett Gardiner – Growing Through It and The Gather, Kajal Latimer – Tools and Technology from the Canadian Angus Association, Morgan MacIntyre – The Sky is the Limit, and Lainie Muir – Ambassador Presentation. That night concluded with fellow Junior members being hypnotized by Terry Knodel of TKO Hypnosis. Finally, as our weekend was coming to a close, we heard from the last speakers which included; Jean Clavelle of the Magpie Group who spoke on Storytelling in Agriculture, and Tracy Willms who spoke about the Celebration of 25 years of the Canadian Junior Angus Association.

As Manitoba Juniors this experience was one that none of us will forget and be able to carry for the rest of our lives. We would like to thank all the supports and speakers that attended to help give us ideas to take back to our own cattle operations.

C ANADIAN A NGUS F OUNDATION’S

LEGACY the 13

The Canadian Angus Foundation functions to preserve and expand the Angus breed for future generations through education, youth development, scientific and market research, and historical preservation and restoration. The Canadian Angus Foundation was incorporated in 1993 and is the charitable arm of the Canadian Angus Association.

The vision of Building the Legacy is to allow the Foundation to build monetary resources. The Foundation uses its funds to provide opportunities for our youth, young breeders and membership to grow in the areas of leadership, marketing, networking, animal husbandry, genetic improvement and to learn about developing tools to enhance Angus production. The vision also includes the importance of preserving Angus history. By fostering these areas we can ensure our Angus history is not lost and will keep Angus as the breed of choice for the commercial beef sector and end users for years to come.

Because of generous donors, we can support initiatives, scholarships, travel bursaries and learning opportunities. Through benevolent donations of livestock, semen, embryos, items and experiences, as well as the purchasing of the auction offerings, the Foundation is able to put together a great suite of opportunities for our Angus membership. Please join us!

THANK YOU Arlene Kirkpatrick & Lois McRae

As we welcome the spring & summer season and all the new beginnings it brings, we also find ourselves turning the page on a very special chapter in the history of the Manitoba Angus Outlook. This issue marks the final one under the leadership of our dedicated co-editors, Lois McRae and Arlene Kirkpatrick— a duo whose impact will be felt for years to come.

For the past 20 years, Lois and Arlene have faithfully produced the Outlook, ensuring that each edition reflected the heart and spirit of the Angus breeders. What began out of unexpected necessity — stepping in when Grant Moffatt went missing — quickly grew into something so much more. With grace and determination, they filled a gap during a challenging time, and in doing so, they created a legacy that is hard to put into words.

Through countless hours of gathering stories, organizing content, and bringing our community’s milestones to light, Lois and Arlene have been the steady hands and thoughtful voices behind this publication. They’ve celebrated births, marriages and achievements, covered shows and sales, highlighted industry changes, and told the stories that matter most to Angus breeders across the country. Their attention to detail, commitment to excellence, and deep love for this breed and the people behind it have never gone unnoticed. With the dedication and vision of Lois and Arlene, the Outlook has become a trusted platform for Manitoba Angus breeders to advertise, promote their programs, and stay connected to what’s happening within our breed — while also reaching far beyond our borders, serving breeders across the country who have used its pages to share their successes and connect with a wider audience.

What’s most remarkable is not just the longevity of their service, but the passion they have carried with them all these years. Even as technology and communication styles evolved, Lois and Arlene remained unwavering in their mission to keep the Outlook relevant, engaging, and true to its roots. They have shown up, issue after issue, with creativity, perseverance, and care — never asking for praise, always putting the community first.

While we are excited to welcome a new editor and begin a fresh chapter, there is no replacing the legacy these two women leave behind. The foundation they’ve built has shaped the Outlook into what it is today — a meaningful, reliable, and cherished publication within our association and beyond.

Lois and Arlene, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you. Your selfless dedication, countless hours of hard work, and unwavering passion have made an immeasurable impact. We are forever grateful.

On behalf of the Manitoba Angus Association and all those who have been touched by your work — thank you for everything.

With heartfelt appreciation, Taylor Ginter on behalf of the Manitoba Angus Association

Colin Kirkpatrick grew up on the now, 6th generation cattle and grain farm just west of Kemnay, MB. His Grandfather and Father showed Shorthorn cattle and then later they had a commercial cattle herd. With some pretty severe drought years in the early 80’s, there were no cattle on the farm for a couple of years. After Colin & Arlene were married, Colin decided to get back into cattle and along with his brother, they purchased their first group of Black Angus heifers in the fall of 1987 from his uncle, Innis Hodson at Rosebank Farms.

The Kembar Angus herd grew over the years to 150 head, with the addition of females from various herds: Brookmore, Lenlook, Mountain View, Greenbush, Mar Mac, RamRod, Botany, Northern View, Cranberry Creek, and J Square S. Many of these purchases were through the Keystone Klassic and the Cowmaker Sales.

Colin also sold females through these sales. These were both Purebred Angus Sales held in Manitoba for many years.

Colin was constantly working to improve the cattle herd, by introducing new genetics into the breeding program. He did this via AI and purchasing top quality bulls from established herds in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Brookmore, Mountain View, KDR, Soo Line, Mar Mac, Brooking, Anderson Cattle Co., and Eastondale Angus, to name a few.

His focus has always been to have a herd of females who calve easily on their own. (Only 3 C-sections in 37 years and they were due to malpresentation!) A cow with lots of milk, good feet and udders and longevity. A good disposition has also been a top priority with all family members involved in working with the cattle.

Colin sold bulls for many years out of the pen, at the farm, but he also supported both the Douglas and South West Bull Development Centers for a few years. Bulls went to commercial producers, mostly within 50 miles of the farm and there were many repeat customers!

Registered females from Kembar Angus have managed to find new homes in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec. Colin says, “it is always nice to see the KBS tattoo show up in pedigrees in new and established herds”. He continues to sell open heifers every spring in large packages.

When Colin first started in the Angus breed, he decided to take an active role in the Association. He joined the MAA board of directors in 1993 and served a 6 year term. His last year in 1999, he was MAA President and also coordinator and Barn Boss for the first ever Canadian National Angus Gold Show, held at the Keystone Centre in Brandon. That same year Kembar Angus received the VanDaele Award (Purebred Breeder of the Year).

Even when not on the board of directors, Colin was active on sub committees. He assisted in hosting Canadian Angus AGM’s and Conventions within Manitoba in 1995, 2005, 2011 and 2017. He was also on the committee to take a display to Spruce Meadows in Calgary, to “The World Angus Forum” in 2009. In 2006 the Kirkpatrick family co-hosted the Annual MAA Summer Angus Tour with Swindon Ranch and Sandy Lar Ranch. They welcomed a large crowd for a steak supper at Kembar Farms!

He played a supportive role to their two daughters, Amanda & Marie in their show activities through 4-H and Junior Angus, including helping out with the first Canadian Junior Angus Showdown to be held in Manitoba at Neepawa in 2001. He is proud to say the grandchildren each have an Angus animal from the Kembar herd to build their own cattle herds as well. He feels that a strong work ethic is a must, to do well in life and growing up on a farm is the best place to raise a family!

Throughout all of these years of sales, activities and events he has met many wonderful people and made many lifelong friends, which has been one of the great benefits of being in the cattle business!

Colin would like to thank the Manitoba Angus Association for the nomination of Honorary President, it is greatly appreciated!

Congratulations Colin! from the Manitoba Angus Association.

S Sympathy - Dale Stewart

Feb 14, 2025 at 66 years of age.

The Angus Community wish to extend our condolences to Dale ’s husband, Brent Stewart, daughter Kelsey (Tyler) Thompson and her grandkids, Brance and Blair Thompson. Our sympathies to Dale and Brent’s extended families.

Dale was a courageous, kind, hard working lady who put her heart and soul in everything she participated in.

Along with her husband Brent and daughter Kelsey, they were dedicated Angus and Simmental breeders, who were very active in the show ring, Junior events and producing top quality genetics.

Dale was very active in her community, fundraising for special projects. She also loved to travel! One trip was with Brent and other Angus friends to the World Angus Forum in Scotland. ( Photo to the right)

Dale put up a strong fight with Cancer but unfortunately on February 14,2025, was taken from us. Rest in Peace Dale. Your Memory will live on forever!

Harry passed away suddenly on January 15th, 2025 at the age of 75 years.

Harry moved to Canada from the Netherlands in 1976 with his wife Antoinette, a sense of adventure and $400 in his pocket. He purchased a dairy in 1977 and switched to beef farming 25 years later.

Angus producers knew him as a very friendly man who enjoyed visiting at Angus events. He sold bulls at Douglas and was a consignor in the Cowmaker Sales for several years.

After 20 years of raising a Registered Black Angus cattle herd Harry retired & moved to Wpg.
