BREEDER PROFILE

Your Name: Dylan Funk Farm Name: EtON Six CatTLE, Dunrea, MB Dylan, Avery, Damian, Jayce, Kaydee and Amanda Funk.

Why did you choose Angus Cattle for your program? My parents switched to Angus bulls in the late 90s. We really enjoyed the extra vigour and calving ease that the Angus genetics instilled in the commercial cowherd. I purchased my first registered Black Angus replacement in 2004 from Harold Neustaedter for a 4H project and the rest is history from there. Starting in 2012 we began to grow the purebred herd with purchases at a few herd dispersals including Soo Line Angus, Bar DK Angus, Sunset Ridge Red Angus and AW Angus. We purchased bred heifers through the Keystone Klassic sale from J Square S Angus, N7 Stock Farm, Greenbush Angus and HBH Angus. A few heifer calves have also been added from Kembar Angus and Ramrod Cattle Co. The bulls patrolling the pastures over the years have come from NB Cattle Co, NYK Cattle Co, Kembar Angus, N7 Stock Farms and Cor Vet Cattle Co. In 2011 we began selling yearling bulls off the farm and then joined the Southwest Bull Development Centre sale in 2014. Today we run about 75 purebred cows and another 50 commercial females. All the cows are AI’d for 21 days in April and then walked with a bull for 6 weeks after. The docility, mothering ability, and udder structure that the Angus female possess is second to none. It’s rewarding to watch a new calf be born quickly and to see the calf up right away and looking for its first milk. YEARS INVOLVED IN THE ANGUS BREED? I joined the Angus breed in 2004 with the purchase of a replacement Angus female for a 4H project. In 2011 I started selling yearling bulls off the farm and then joined the Southwest Bull Development Centre sale in 2014.

INVOLVEMENT in Local Ag Groups, 4-H or in the Manitoba Angus Assoc? I was a member with the La Rivière Beef Club throughout school. I have been a director with the Manitoba Angus Association since 2013 and served 3 years as the Vice President. Our kids are now involved with the Boissevain Beef Club. What are Some Traits of the Angus Breed that you have Incorporated into your Program? The udder structure and calving ease are the first traits that come to mind. The mama cows do all the work for us and we have greatly reduced our calving issues. You can really appreciate the maternal traits of the Angus cow and the vigour that the calves possess. Docility is key as it is normally a family event when we are working and moving cattle and we are able to involve the kids with not much worry.

What would you like to see done in the Angus breed? I think we need to continue to educate the end user on the benefits of beef and the positive impact that we have on the birthweight, some size and not sacrifice the calving ease that comes with it. As producers we want to provide the feedlots with an animal that will finish at an excelled rate without giving up a bunch of carcass weight. continued on page 14,please check it out.

Editor’s Corner

Lois McRae and Arlene Kirkpatrick Time to look in the closet for the rubber boots as spring is finally here and with the moisture, we are having it is a great problem to have some mud. They say you must have the bad to get the good, so storms and wind will result in some much-needed moisture in Manitoba. The cattle market is very strong right now with 600 lb steer calves selling for over $ 2.00 a pound so around $ 1500 a head. Positive news for the producers currently. This is an exciting summer for Manitoba Angus! We will welcome Canadian Junior Angus members from across Canada to our Friendly Manitoba Province for Canadian Junior Angus Showdown. This is an excellent opportunity for Junior Angus members to learn new skills and unique experiences. If you do not have a Junior Angus membership, commercial or 4-H members go to the Canadian Junior Angus website and join today for a small fee. Both our families have been very involved in the past Canadian Junior Angus Showdowns and made many lifetime friends. Please take the time even one day to come out and support our Junior Angus program, view the livestock from across Canada and meet some Junior Angus members. View schedule and entry forms on pages 10 and 11 .

MANITOBA ANGUS ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Devon Boitson As Mother Nature already throws some interesting curve balls this spring across the whole province, I hope that producers have been able to adapt to the recent events with minimal losses and will be able to get their crops in the ground in an efficient and timely manner. I hope that as you read this we are experiencing double digit temperatures to get everyone back to normal spring farming practices. To everyone that is starting/continuing to calve I wish you the best of luck the rest of the spring. With summer around the corner it’s very exciting to see all that the summer will bring. As of right now, all the Angus events that were hosted prior to the pandemic will be making a comeback. In June, the Angus convention will be hosted in Moncton New Brunswick. In July, Harding Fair will be hosting the MB Angus Summer Gold Show, followed by the Junior Angus Showdown held in Brandon the subsequent week. The Keystone Klassic sale will be back in December with a new date. This year the sale will be held on Tuesday, December 6. Typically the sale would be the first weekend of December but due to the Grey Cup being held in Regina, this pushed back the week of Agribition. The sale will again be collaborated with the Keystone Konnection Simmental sale and the sales team will be Bohrson Marketing. Reminder to all the Junior members to apply for the Jack Hart Memorial Award this summer where the recipient of this award receives a $2500 voucher towards an Angus female at the 2022 Keystone Klassic sale. It’s a great opportunity for young breeders to grow their herd with genetics from some of the top producers. It’s also significant for young breeders to be recognized by other Angus producers in the province. If anyone has any questions or comments regarding anything MB Angus related feel free to contact me.

CANADIAN ANGUS PRESIDENT SHELDON KYLE Redvers, Saskachewan (306-452-7545)

In Agriculture we are dependant upon many things we have very little control over. The markets may become volatile and can suddenly change our profitability for a complete production cycle. Mother nature lies in wait with an unexpected curve ball for you to sort out. An international trade deal comes together unexpectedly and causes increased demand for your product. I think you get the picture, there are outside sources that will continually influence our businesses and our success. Fortunately, farmers and ranchers are very versatile and adaptable. We have been raised in this environment and have developed a skill set to deal with these variables. This doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t chart out our direction and seek out initiatives that will strengthen our future and enable us to manage what we can control. At the Canadian Angus Association, I believe that we have been working towards solidifying our future through some of the programs and projects we are developing. The development of new selection tools, exploring artificial intelligence technology and how it can be applied to current production systems, developing improvements to how we track genetics, understanding emerging scientific advancements in livestock breeding and working to meet our consumers demands are all items that get thrown on the table for discussion. The cattle business is not for the faint of heart. I would be remise if I wasn’t to mention the spring storms that grabbed a hold of us and held us to our knees this April. There are many moments from those two weeks that we do not want to endure again. However, like everything there is a silver lining to be found. The silver lining for me was the strength and support of our cattle community. I found so many people calling or texting to “check-in” to see how we were doing. This led me to start doing the same. We need to realize that we are not on an island, we have lots of friends within our cattle community who are suffering through the same daily challenges that we are facing. Let’s continue to do better and strengthen this support system, you all made me very proud to be a part of your network. I am looking forward to attending a few exciting events over the next few months. I hope that you will join us in Moncton, NB for our Annual Canadian Angus Convention and AGM. The folks in the Maritimes are looking forward to hosting us and I am certain that we will not be disappointed with their hospitality. I am also excited to be headed to Brandon for Showdown this July. Being able to watch our young members develop their skills as livestock exhibitors and make lifelong friendships makes my heart swell. It has been an honor to serve as your CAA President and I look forward to meeting you along the cattle trail in the future. CANADIAN JUNIOR ANGUS PRESIDENT REPORT - Naomi Best I hope everyone has had a great spring thus far. As I write this, the Canadian Junior Angus has just wrapped up hosting GOAL “Take Two” In Saskatoon, Saskatchewan April 30th and May 1st. We had an excellent attendance of over 40 juniors, six of which were from Manitoba. The weekend was filled with guest speakers sharing their knowledge on brand marketing, effective social media communication, life experiences, genomics, and we were able to tour the U of S Livestock and Forage Centre of Excellence and the Saskatoon Colostrum Company. The CJA Board is looking forward to hosting GOAL in Toronto, Ontario February 18 th – 20th, 2023. We are gearing up to host Showdown in Brandon, Manitoba July 27 th – 29th. Entry forms, rules and regulations can be found on our Junior Angus website, with the official deadline being June 1st and the late deadline being June 20th. A schedule of events can be found on the website as well. If you have any questions, please reach out to myself, Belinda or any of our board of directors and we would gladly help you out. Take note that virtual entries for the photography, literature and graphic design competitions must be emailed to the CJA no later than July 10th to be judged prior to Showdown. We are excited to be hosting our show back-to-back with Round-Up which will take place in Neepawa right after, July 30th and 31st. I can’t wait to see all of the enthusiastic Manitoba Junior Angus members in Brandon this summer! I want to encourage all Juniors to take a look at the upcoming scholarship and bursary opportunities that are available whether it be through the Canadian Junior Angus or the Canadian Angus Foundation. As I wrap up my final few months as a Canadian Junior Angus member, I can’t stress enough how amazing the opportunities I’ve had over my years have been. If you have any questions about what’s on our website, please don’t hesitate to contact me. See you down the show road, Naomi Best Canadian Junior Angus President.

“SHOWDOWN” -an experience you will never forget! By Jennifer Jermey When asked to talk about our CJA Showdown experiences I struggled to put into words the excitement and joy I have had over the 17 years I was a part of the Junior Angus program. Our family was fortunate to attend 8 Showdowns over the years starting as Pee-Wees and continuing until we aged out of the program. Our Showdown experience started in the summer of 2005 with the Showdown held in Brandon for the 100 th Anniversary of the Angus Association. We spent the weekend as Pee-Wee members learning from the senior members and having lots of fun. Now 17 years later I have strong memories of the cook-off experience and competing in my first sales talk competition. I remember having lots of fun and falling in love with Showdown. Then in 2007, we travelled to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. 2009 saw a different type of adventure as we travelled across the country to attend Showdown in Dundas, Prince Edward Island. The opportunity to see agriculture and the Angus breed on the East coast is a memory I hold dear. In 2011 we attended Showdown in Weyburn, Saskatchewan, followed by Virden, Manitoba in 2014, Olds, Alberta in 2015, Lloydminster, Saskatchewan in 2017 and my final one in Barrie, Ontario in 2018. Attending Showdown also led to other Junior Angus opportunities including the yearly GOAL conference, competing for the Robert C. McHaffie Junior Ambassador award, and numerous scholarship competitions. Showdown is more than a Junior show. We were able to make friends who shared our interests across the country. Attending Showdown allowed me and my brothers to meet fellow Angus enthusiasts from across North America. I still talk to many of them today and I appreciate the ease with which I have built connections across the country with other amazing people. One of my favourite parts of Showdown always was the opportunity to display my talents in the many other competitions offered throughout the weekend. I still have my scrapbooks and a few of my art projects today as an adult. The opportunity to hone my skills in public speaking and sales talk has been invaluable as I began my career as a teacher. The confidence to speak in front of crowds and the ability to feel comfortable thinking on my feet has served me daily in my chosen career. The Team-Grooming, Showmanship, Photography, Literature, Scrapbook, and other competitions allow you the opportunity to display your talents and the knowledge you already have within and beyond the Angus breed. As I began applying for jobs, scholarships, and other educational opportunities my time and skills developed at Showdown were always listed near the top and I have had more than one employer comment on the experience. Skills including teamwork and the ability to problem-solve, as mentioned above, have always been important and will be relevant in any future career you may be considering. My brothers have mentioned similar things about their own experiences. I strongly encourage any Junior member, including those with commercial Angus animals, to consider registering for Showdown here in Brandon this summer. I can guarantee you will have a great weekend, take part in some really fun activities, and meet some other amazing Junior Angus members. You never know where life will take you in 17 years, but for myself, I know without a doubt I wouldn't be the same person if I hadn't attended my first Showdown in 2005!

DO YOU USE THE ANGUS GREEN TAGS AND HOW DO YOU MARKET YOUR ANGUS? We use the Angus tags and RFID buttons in our herd. The calves are sold through the Killarney Auction Mart in the fall. We sell bulls and replacement females off the farm and consign yearling bulls to the Southwest Bull Development Centre sale in April each year. DO YOU HAVE ANY NEW TECHNIQUES USED ON YOUR CATTLE FARM? EXAMPLE VERIFIED BEEF, SPECIFIC GRAZING TECHNIQUES OR ANY OTHER COMMENTS ON YOUR PROGRAM? We have begun growing multi species cover crops on our land closest to the yard. It has allowed us to add tonnes at silage time as well as giving us the opportunity to graze the regrowth and winter the cows out there till calving begins.

Save your tape for wrapping gifts!

Best Practices for Efficient Hair Sample Processing

1. Collect hair sample from animal (click here for tips on collecting hair samples) 2. Open CAA-provided hair card and place the HAIR ROOTS on the hair card (there is a circle in the middle of the hair card that says “Place hair roots here”) 3. Affix the hair with tape at the bottom of the card (there is a rectangle that says “Place tape here”) 4. Trim off excess hair extending from the bottom of the card (where you taped) 5. Make sure your card is labelled correctly and clearly with the animal’s FULL tattoo Please DO NOT 6. To avoid $54/sample fee, submit test 1. Tape the hair together request to CAA office and send the but not to the card CAA-generated paperwork with the hair 2. Tape all around the outside of the card to Neogen Canada, following the card and leave the hair loose inside instructions on the paperwork.

3. Tape around the outside of the card

By following the procedures set by the lab, all samples will be processed at the quickest rate possible. Taking steps to “secure” your sample will result in processing delays for all samples. 16

Get Information From Reliable Sources By Roy Lewis DVM

Regarding the health, welfare and productivity of our cattle we need to get our information from reliable sources and also be willing to be objective to new ideas. I have always said the professional people you deal with if reputable and the progressive producers are great places to start. There is tons of stuff on Dr. Google but one must be selective . We are fortunate in Western Canada in the sense that many avenues associated with the CCA (Canadian Cattlemen’s Association) or the their provincial counterparts such as the ABP (Alberta Beef Producers) MBP (Manitoba Beef Producers) have information put on webinars and have tools to make you a better producer ultimately. Most of their recommendations are very practical and current. They are objective in their approach and there is no financial gain for them. Government Agricultural agencies used to fill that role but they have gotten so lean that their coverage is spotty at best. It is funny to me how old habits get started and are very hard to break so we that work with producers must continually be mentioning these things. I wanted to mention a few habits that do you no good and yet still continue to be done. Hanging a calf after it is born is a no-no and the BCRC (Beef Cattle Research Council) just look up their website has a great video on proper calf resuscitation. More is not better when it comes to antibiotics. All the products have been developed and the drug tested at that dosage. You are wasting product and creating drug residues if you use more than the label dose. When it comes to handling a prod should be a rarely used thing and if using it more than on 5% of animals and in my opinion that is high look how the handling processing facility can be changed. Always be looking at ways to improve handling as sickness is decreased injuries are decreased and cattle become better and better to handle. When you think of it this is why cattle when have had an obtrusive procedure done to them balk the next time coming into the chute. Spend even a little bit of time training someone new in the more low stress handling methods. This is why I never would have a prod readily available it is only in certain situations where it is needed. Reach out to the cattle organizations and breed associations as they are the leaders in cattle production and have people that can help you with a specific program. We do need to pat ourselves n the back when we think how far the cattle industry has come and we are continually improving. Look to the pharmaceutical industry and be open and receptive to the new advancements they have made. They always keep in mind the practicality and convenience of things. I have always said even though this is not totally right that convenience trumps efficacy. In other words if something is convenient to give and has some merit and price is within reason for the benefit it creates it will be adopted by the progressive cattlemen. The pharmacy industry wants to have long term relationships with veterinarians and you the producers that they serve . If you do better we do better it is as simple as that. It is great with convenience and technology things like tele- veterinary medicine may really help you whereby a picture video and other information may be sent to your herd veterinarian and a recommendation given. This needs to be the same veterinarian that does your herd work or has a relationship with you. This can be done timely, accurately and there can be follow up on the case. Cost should also be less as mileage or effort on your part to bring the case into a clinic may be able to be eliminated. This of course can only work in certain circumstances but it would be nice to know that option exists so talk to your veterinarian about it. One thing I have found that is difficult to change is our selection of what antibiotics use in specific circumstances so with the changes to how antimicrobials are purchased will really help you with your veterinarian to have a SOP for your farm on what drug to use on what circumstance as they are now all prescription. This is a good thing because as we closely look at what we do we find many things do not require the use of antimicrobials at all. If you are trying to find out about a specific cattle production and health topic please check out the BCRC website as there is a list of pre-recorded topics to choose from. There again are also really good videos in production. Thanks to Roy Lewis DVM for this interestiing article. Roy Lewis practised large animal veterinary medicine in Alberta for more than 35 years and now works as a consultant. His interests include Large Animal Reproduction and Animal welfare

Report from Director of Business Development for MB/SK To say that 2022 has been interesting so far would be an understatement. World events, market uncertainty and Mother Nature have all come together to impact everyone's operations. Skyrocketing input costs have matched record commodity prices (for those lucky enough to have grain in their bins) and made tight margins even tighter. The widespread drought across much of the west was replaced with above average to record snowfalls in many areas. Late spring storms have caused some localized flooding while other areas have little to no subsoil moisture to get things started. Talking with some auction mart staff the general consensus was that last fall and all winter and still now there are a lot of cows going through their rings to slaughter. This lead to the question from some producers whether they should be holding back some extra heifers to sell as breds in the fall. The answer, often accompanied with a shrug, was if you can afford it, have the grass and it rains, yes. Well let's hope it rains and we can start rebuilding the national cow herd again. That being said, the bull sales this spring got along well considering all the uncertainty. The overall averages were down a little from last year but not as bad as some expected, however some areas were definitely under more pressure than others. The demand for purebred open heifers was strong and will hopefully carry through to the fall sale season. The commercial replacement market was up and down but did seem to improve with later sales as we get closer to grass time. By the time you read this some of the spring industry events may already be over. I will be attending a Saskatchewan Angus Association Breeder Information Session on April 29th. The GOAL Conference "Take 2" is April 30th and May 1st. Both these events are in Saskatoon. May 5th-8th I will be in Lloydminster for the LMAC Conference and Canadian Auctioneer Championship. The Auctioneer competition will be held at NLS Lloydminster on Friday May 6th so if you're in the area be sure to stop around. June 5th-7th I will be in Assiniboia for the Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association (SSGA) AGM. They always have a good lineup of speakers and it's a great opportunity to network with industry representatives and grassroots producers. June 21st I will be at the Livestock and Forage Centre of Excellence (LFCE) Field Day at Clavet. This is always interesting seeing first hand some of the projects the University of Saskatchewan and their Ag. students are working on. July 22nd will be the MAA Gold Show at Harding Fair in Harding, MB It's been awhile since I've been there and I'm looking forward to attending. July 27th-29th will be Showdown in Brandon. This is always a highlight of the summer and I'm sure Brandon will be a great host venue after being postponed a couple years. Get out and support our Juniors! The summer will wrap up with the SAA Summer Tour in the Maple Creek area August 10th-12th. This tour has become a must attend event and if you've never been to one, make plans to attend. That's about it for now. Here's to hoping for fair weather and good health. See ya down the road, Bob Toner

CCIA Annual General Meeting – April 2022 At the Annual General Meeting in April, CCIA saw the departure of three long standing board members, Doug Sawyer and Pat Hayes, both representatives of the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA) and James MacLean, the Canadian Livestock Dealers Association (CLDA) representative. Doug has been on the Board since 2015 and has been a dedicated member and Chair of the Board Governance and Development Committee. After 11 years on the Board, James is also departing, his industry insight will be missed. Pat Hayes has been with CCIA since 2009 and will remain involved as Past Chair for the next year. Pat will be remembered for his commonsense approach to traceability and his active role in assuring CCIA was financially sustainable under a fair business model for all species being administered by CCIA. Thank you, Pat for your 12 years at CCIA. CCIA also welcomed two new representatives from CCA Matt Bowman from Ontario and Brad Osadczuk from Alberta as well as David Saretsky from CLDA. Associate Member Shawn Wilson was welcomed as the Canadian Beef Breeds Council representative. These new representatives bring a wealth of experience to the table. The remainder of the CCIA Board remained the same with the Executive Committee is as follows: Chair – Lyle Miller, Alberta Cattle Feeders’ Association Vice Chair – Howard Bekkering, Alberta Beef Producers Finance Chair – Dr. Oliver Schunicht, Canadian Veterinary Medical Association Executive Members – Ivan Johnson, Maritime Beef Producers and Ken Perlich, Livestock Markets Association of Canada Moving Forward with Ultra-High Frequency (UHF) Industry has indicated there are benefits to be captured using Ultra-High Frequency (UHF) technology beyond the capabilities of the current Low Frequency technology tags. Even ahead of international standardization of numbering schemes, which is required for national adoption of the technology in Canada, CCIA is exploring ways to rapidly introduce UHF management tags into the existing system in a cost-efficient manner that supplies benefits of the technology to on-farm data collection and supports traceability. Traceability integrity is enhanced, and data capture is simplified by pairing a UHF tag number with a CCIA tag number and storing the cross reference in the CLTS. Age Verification Change of Birth Date Notification Age Verification and entering birth date of animals into the Canadian Livestock Tracking System (CLTS) remains an option for producers and is internationally recognized as valuable to traceability. As part of CCIA’s ongoing responsibility to improving data integrity a “Birthdate Modification Flag” has been added to make aware of changes to the original birth date. If a birth date or a modification is made after the animal is 9 months of age a note will appear on the Tag History and Birth Certificate indicating this change has been made. Tag Supply Chain Issues As with many other industries, CCIA has also been affected by supply chain issues which have impacted the availability of some livestock identification devices. CDMV (CCIA’s distributor) is receiving weekly shipments, but not at a normal, reliable rate. As a result, some products are on back order. To ensure fair distribution, some products are subject to a weekly purchase allotment until adequate supplies are available. It is important to place your order at tags.canadaid.ca (CCIA’s Webstore) even if your selected products show as ‘Back Order”. By placing your order, you secure your place in the queue, and it will be filled in sequence as soon as there is availability. Upcoming changes to tag distribution CCIA has had a longstanding goal of owning our own building consisting of both office and warehouse. The new building, located in SE Calgary, is bright, comfortable and provides lots of room for the next phase. By having ample warehouse space in a location that has easy access for a distribution centre we can realize our goal to increase in-house services and become more self-reliant to better serve the industry. All tags and tag accessories that are available through tags.canadaid.ca (CCIA’s Webstore) will soon be distributed exclusively from the Calgary office. 7171-107 Avenue SE Calgary, AB T2C 5N6 Tel: (403) 275-2083 Fax: (413) 275-1668 Toll Free: 1-877-909-2333 www.canadaid.ca

Manitoba says Goodbye to some Great Cattlemen in the Angus Industry! Charlie Simpson 91, Brookdale, beloved husband of the late Ruby Simpson, passed away on Monday, February 14, 2022 at Fairview Home.

Charlie was involved in Angus cattle getting his first calf in 1938 and was awarded a Red Ribbon. In 1978, together with son Bob, the Tag-a-Long Red Angus herd was established and grew to over 300. Charlie and Ruby dedicated a lot of time and energy to Red Power, a Red Angus Bull Test Station who had an annual Bull Sale. In later years, they started their own Government approved Test Station and sold all the bulls of the farm. In 2005, Tag A Long received their 50-year award in the Angus Industry and were also named Manitoba Angus Purebred Breeder and Canadian Angus honorary President. 2005 was a big year as the herd was dispersed in the fall on Charlie’s 75th birthday. They remained on the farm for another year before moving to Neepawa. After living in Neepawa for three years they moved to Brandon and resided at Victoria Landing. Angus cattle were a major part of Charlie’s life and we thank him for his dedication to the Angus breed. He will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him. View obituary and video at www.memorieschapel.com

(Photo of the 50th year award presentation in Brandon)

Laurent Maguet 95, Ste Rose du Lac passed away on Feb 23, 2022. Only four days after Laurent's death, his beloved wife of 72 years Lorraine (97) also passed away. Laurent Maguet was the distinguished founder of Rendezvous Farms from the well-known Manitoba pedigreed livestock & grains operation. At 18 years of age, Laurent then started building a purebred cattle herd from three registered Aberdeen-Angus cows his mother Luce Trottier Maguet, now a widow, had purchased for her young son. Laurent's talented mother Luce, née Trottier believed in her young son's dream of one day becoming a top stockman. In 1959, Laurent won Supreme Angus Female over all breeds at the Brandon Royal Manitoba Winter Fair. By 1973, Laurent had developed a herd of 300 registered Aberdeen-Angus from those 3 cows. Laurent and family were involved in the Angus, Limousin, Gelbvieh and currently Rendezvous Farms in the Simmental breed. Livestock have always been an important part of Laurent’s life and he will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him. View full obituary at www.sneathstrilchuk.com and the upcoming memorial service in August.

Barrie Baker, of Neepawa passed away February 3, 2022 at the Neepawa Memorial Hospital at the age of 79 years.

Barry was involved with Angus cattle from a young age as his parents raised and showed purebred Angus. He and his wife Bernice and family were active participants in Angus events throughout Manitoba. Their herd name was Greenbush Angus. Barry was especially proud of awards he received. In 1992 he won Grand Champion Pen of 3 Bulls at the Ag Ex Commercial Classic, The Van Daele Award in 1994 and in 2001 Greenbush Angus received the 50 year award from the Canadian Angus Association to recognize their long term commitment to the Angus breed. Barry semi-retired from farming in the 2002 but by then he had instilled the love of Angus cattle in the next 2 generations of his family and there are still a few Angus cattle on the farm, where he resided until his passing. Barry will be sadly missed by all who knew him. View obituary at www.whitesfh.ca (Photo receiving the VanDaele award)

Showdown - an experience you won’t want to miss! by Candace Abey Although I haven’t attended many “Showdowns” across the Provinces, the ones I went to, were some of the best memories of summer, while growing up. My first showdown experience was in Brandon and then I went to Moose Jaw my year of graduation. I have also attended many MB Angus Junior Shows over the years. Being able to take part in so many useful activities such as Team Grooming, Marketing, Public Speaking and Individual Judging is something so important to carry forward in life, with future careers or in everyday life at the farm. I’ve met some great people at these shows and made lifelong friendships and I’m excited to bring my kids to their first Showdown this summer in Brandon. I hope they can create life long memories and friendships and gain knowledge and further their confidence at such a great event for Juniors across the country.
