Saskatchewan’s Newest Reproductive Facility

Time is money; and in the world of genetics and marketing, lead time is money Producers are anxious to propagate their genetics as quickly as possible, leading to newer, exciting and hopefully better progeny With an aggressive approach to lead time, breeders are always excited to work with service providers who are like minded Highly motivated for success, a keen eye for important details and desire for constant improvement and growth: this is an extremely fitting description of the folks at BoviGen near Moose Jaw

The team at BoviGen: Tyson and Ashley Buyer along with their skilled and knowledgeable staff of 12 that includes Garner Deobald; have a dedication to customer service, a high degree of attention to animal comfort and care while providing industry leading results for embryo production and implanting as well as semen collection. One trip through the facility, and you can see the details that have went into the construction of the pens and handling designs as well as the fore-thought into livestock flow and low stress movement These are not a lucky coincidence; Dr Buyer is a “real world” cowman. Growing up near Carbon, Alberta and relocating to Carnduff, Saskatchewan with his family, he gained vital experience at a young age working with stock on his family’s operation. It was in Carnduff that he started his large animal practice and bovine reproduction

center under the name Ranchland Veterinary Services This was shortly after graduating from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine where Dr. Buyer was awarded both the Amstutz Scholarship as well as the Merek Student of the Year for most outstanding large animal student in North America.

The Buyer family made the move to Moose Jaw in 2021, to realize on a boyhood dream of Tyson’s, to open a full-service bovine reproductive center The facility that we see today broke ground in 2023 and they were proud of the milestone of having their first donors enter the donor barn in August of the same year In the early months of 2024, the semen collection side opened

The semen collection entity is capable of collecting owner’s use along with domestic sale or international export qualified semen It is also a well-designed and thought out barn with the ability to offer clean, dry and well protected shelter for your

valuable bulls regardless of the harsh climate. The team at BoviGen is aware of the value that these animals carry and are dutiful in their care and well-being The ration as well as

BREEDING SEASON

....the time when decisions applied today will affect the results of tomorrow. We are very proud of our herd bull lineup and feel it is unrivalled in the seed stock industry in terms of power and quality regardless your focus. Each breeding piece has a purpose and every year evaluated to estimate the value of his use. Many trials are conducted and traits are measured but it isn’t until the daughters come into production that a breeding choice 3 to 5 years previous will determine how successful our decisions are.

Each bull in our lineup is from the most elite of females in the breed. Most are high profile donors who have established themselves as bonafide power cows with multi trait and phenotype excellence.

Cows that are backed up by generations of big bodied, sound structured cattle that reproduce consistently in type and kind. It is really that simple.

The Saskatchewan Angus Association has been busy as always and it is great to see that spring has arrived with some much-needed moisture across much of the province. Our last event held in conjunction with our April board meeting was an outstanding success with what was our largest Breeder Information Session attendance to date The Session and board meeting were held at the exceptional new Bovigen facility just west of Moose Jaw. We heard from Kurtis Reid with Masterfeeds as well as Dr Tyson Buyer,

owner of Bovigen. We were also given a tour of the facility where they are set up to do in herd semen collection as well as domestic and export collection of both semen and embryos Thank you again to Tyson and his team for graciously hosting us and giving us the tour.

As June approaches a number of us from Saskatchewan are looking forward to attending the Canadian Angus National Convention which will be held in Ontario. It is always great to connect at the national level to learn what is going on with our Canadian Association as well as with the other provinces at the regional meetings held there

July 23rd and 24th will be the 2024 dates for our ever-popular Saskatchewan Angus Summer Tour We look forward to joining you and many others in the North-central area of the province for what promises to be another excellent and must attend event. Help out our hosts by pre-registering either online or with the form that is printed in this issue

of the Edge, and book your room at the Canalta Humboldt (306-682-4731) before June 21st to be included in our block. More details are on page 14 and 15

New for this year, one of our Gold Shows, along with the Saskatchewan Junior Show, will be moved back to the Prince Albert Fair August 1st-3rd It’s been a while since PA has hosted us and we look forward to a great turnout Many thanks to the Lloydminster Exhibition for their hospitality over the last number of years. Our second provincial Gold Show will be hosted, as always, at Canadian Western Agribition, November 25th - 30th

We will be celebrating the 50th Anniversary of our Association sponsored Masterpiece Sale this October, which is quite a milestone. bunk space is more than adequate and you can rest easy knowing your herd sires as well as donor and recipient cows are extremely well cared for

The embryo side of the business is capable of doing both conventional and IVF flushes. The IVF lab is a sight to see; again no short cuts were taken to design and construct this facility As the genetic advancement world is fast paced and cutting edge, so must be the service providers The opportunity to do on farm flushes is available, the mobile unit travels across the prairies, flushing and implanting cows with great success

As the value of the animals under their care increase, so do the expectations from the owners The industry is results driven and the team at BoviGen understand this. After a quick tour of the yard, it’s easy to gain that confidence A courteous and friendly staff welcomes you to BoviGen. A tidy and very professional appearance is noticeable as well as comfortable and content stock Signage hangs on each gate, with the bull or donors

name as well as if there are commercial/exportable semen or embryos available These small details make the difference in the highly competitive nature of frozen genetics

When Dr. Buyer was asked about expansion and targets, he was reserved. This is understandable. After such an intense and time consuming build, he’s enjoying his young family and spending time coaching his girls. It’s an important lesson; if you want to go fast, go alone – if you want to go far, go together Every great visionary thinks about expansion and growth. To the naked eye, the design of most of the facilities has the ability to double in size as the dirt work and heavy lifting has already been done. However, the team at BoviGen made it extremely clear that they want to do a world class job with tremendous results and first rate service before they’re concerned with expansion

The addition of the export semen collection is a welcome sight for all Saskatchewan and Manitoba producers It’s a centralized location with great logistics that is just a day trip for

breeders It provides the chance to keep your bulls local and alleviate some of the shipping stress on the yearling and younger bulls entering stud for the first time Canadian breeders are realizing the opportunities to market genetics abroad and the option of staying closer to home is welcome. With the facility just one mile off of the Trans Canada, the chance for exposure has never been greater

If time is money then results are currency too The results of years of hard work, determination and “Prairie Grit” stand just north of Highway 1 west of Moose Jaw. You can see the passion, pride and professionalism from miles away It’s more than a business – it’s a desire to make a difference. That is worth more than all the money in the world But if you are a betting man, don’t bet against BoviGen because they are building something special. Get in touch with them today on how they can help you achieve great results time is money!

Well as I sit to write this, spring is easing in like an old man (me) easing into a warm bath The temperatures remain relatively cool, especially at nights here. Like all farmers a nice 1” of warm rain would be welcome to kick start the hay and pasture grass In typical Saskatchewan fashion, we have had great kite flying opportunities here daily Damn wind

Sunday April 21st saw the Saskatchewan Angus board meet for our spring meeting at BoviGen just west of Moose Jaw WOW! What a place Tyson and Ashley Buyer have invested a tremendous of amount of time, energy and resources to develop this world class facility. We are very thankful to them for opening their business to us on a Sunday

We had a productive board meeting with very good discussions. I am always impressed with the productive, respectful, and enjoyable environment of this fine group of breeders. After our four hours of meetings, we had a couple of 45-minute presentations and a tour of the BoviGen facility. The turnout and support was tremendous with approximately 60 participants. The first session was led by Kurtis Reid entitled "Why do they feed like that?” Kurtis works with Masterfeeds as Saskatchewan Sales Manager There was a

great deal of information on different feeding/management options and a pros and cons analysis for each. While there was a lot of valuable information to ponder, the big take away for me was that a good common-sense approach to feed your cattle is based on your needs, infrastructure, and situation, not just dollars and cents. Session two was led by Dr. Tyson Buyer entitled “It’s breeding season.”

This was a real brain filler for sureso many things to consider in breeding your cows whether you are AI’ing them naturally or setting them up through various protocols. The wealth of breeding knowledge and expertise Tyson possesses is truly overwhelming to this hayseed from Duff Thanks to Kurtis and Tyson for taking the time to prepare and present to us. These sessions were followed by a tour of the state-of-the-art office, lab and barns at BoviGen. They are truly set up to meet all your breeding needs from semen collection to embryo work BoviGen is a facility you need to check out

students on agriculture and beef Students were engaged in beef production, benefits of beef production to the environment, herd management, cattle feeding, herd health and, beef by-products and the benefits of beef for human consumption The presentation was culminated by students preparing and ultimately eating beef tacos with all the fixin’s.

Further to this education piece, in conjunction with Ag in the Classroom, school tours are planned in a few spots throughout the province On May 8th a grade 2/3 class from Balcarres school will tour Nu Horizion Angus at Lipton and a grade 8 class from Balcarres will do a tour at Northern View Angus near Duff A tour at North Country Angus near Pierceland is also being planned. Watch for follow up details in the next Edge.

As part of our strategic plan, we are attempting to do more work to mentor and educate on our industry and what we do in agriculture On Thursday April 25th I was fortunate to be able to tag along with Ms. Anna MacDonald, Ag in the Classroom to North Valley High School in Lemberg to present to a grade 7/8 class of

The Industry loses a Couple of Icons . . .

We have other breeders who have offered to do tours in areas around the province However, schools in those areas have not yet reached out to Ag in the Classroom or have not received funding to do a tour. Hopefully with time these tours will catch on and be very prevalent throughout the province

May your health be sound, the rains be timely, and the cattle industry remain strong. All the best for a wonderful spring and summer.

Our sympathy goes out to the Switzer and Carey families on the loss of Bob and Brent They will be missed

Bob’s personality was larger than life and he was always up for a visit at our Saskatchewan Angus events which he supported faithfully.

Brent sold our Masterpiece Sale for us for a number of years as well countless other purebred sales, he could be counted on to always give you his honest opinion.

Family Values Serve as a Compass

While farm families across generations may differentiate themselves based on their interests, generational experiences, and goals, having a common set of values can provide the compass and comfort for farm families to define their purpose and guide their path.

The Family Business Consulting Group specializes in assisting enterprising families in establishing enduring legacies and enterprises designed to thrive across generations Despite often associating multigenerational businesses with agriculture, it's easy to overlook the prevalence of family-owned enterprises in various sectors all around us For instance, in my hometown, the local hardware store has seamlessly transitioned through five generations.

From their extensive experience and perspective, the Consulting Group outlines the importance of defining and aligning values in a family business as one of these core components to contribute to not only a smooth transition of ownership when the time arrives but also to continue the strong foundation of a business today

What are values?

First, what are values? Values are a set of beliefs, mindsets, and actions that drive behavior Individually, our values dictate how we behave and make decisions In today's landscape, major agri-business companies prominently display their mission, vision statements, and increasingly, their core values on their websites. This trend reflects a growing inclination among companies to articulate their guiding principles to their audience.

While our grandparents clearly upheld values that defined their actions they didn’t write them

down, place them on their website, or discuss them in family meetings, yet they modeled them with their actions. Today, our customers and our consumers want to know what we stand for As future generations assume roles of generational transfer, the alignment of values across generations can impact the succession planning process and define the legacy

Why are shared values important?

Values in your business are like the pedigrees that guide genetic selection They can guide you in making decisions and reaching operational goals. Your values can impact major business decisions or smaller day-to-day actions

The Family Business Consulting Group leads many businesses through the process of discovering, describing, and documenting their values, reporting that most success is achieved when all the voices are heard across individuals, families, and generations Variations in values will surface but finding that common ground in values results in more clarity in business goals and oftentimes witnessing generations will find they are more aligned than they believed

What impact do family values have?

Our decisions are made based on our values If you value “Quality Customer Service” for your bull customers, then you will take the steps and actions to demonstrate this to your customers Rather than sending the bull with a livestock hauling company to be delivered to your customer, you commit to delivering the bull to their ranch yourself, to see the operation, visit with the customer, and build a business relationship If you value, “Financial Sustainability”, you may decide to get one more year out of the feed wagon before you upgrade or you determine that the cost of return of having a newer model means you can grind more feed in a shorter time frame allowing you to devote time to other important to-do items around the ranch

Understanding and following the alignment of the core values of your family business can be the compass to guide you if you become overwhelmed with a decision. How did you react in the past? What steps did you take to work through the challenge?

How do we practice our values?

Often family business values are driven by family traditions or historical values from earlier generations There is an endless array of values that you might define for your business Here are a few that I found associated with agricultural businesses: Quality Genetics, Customer-First, Family-Focused, Integrity, Supporting Communities, Sustainability, Good Neighbors, Continuous Improvement and Innovation, and Respect

As you work to discuss and define your values ask questions to ensure you are living and following your values Some example questions may be:

● Are we role models in our industry?

● What is important to us? Do we demonstrate that?

● Are we communicating the message to our family, our employees, and the industry we seek to represent?

Countless years of dedication have been invested in farm family businesses, with many aspiring to perpetuate this legacy, ensuring the next generation can embrace the agricultural way of life and sustain their livelihoods While understanding and defining values might appear abstract the process of uncovering, articulating, and recording these values often unearths remarkable stories of family heritage

Beyond their significance for family farms and ranches, values also play a pivotal role for individuals assuming leadership positions within agricultural or community organizations. They furnish a framework for decision-making and choices with significance Engaging in the exercise of identifying values can prove both inspirational and fulfilling for both family businesses and organizational endeavors alike

Out and About in Saskatchewan .

This year’s spring bull sale run has, for the most part, I would say exceeded expectations. One of the drivers behind the success would be the number of bulls that went to town last fall after breeding season to save on feed. The continued strength of the cull bull market this spring saw more bulls going to town and being replaced with younger bulls. The replacement commercial females also sold very well however if dry conditions remain, many producers said these females would be coming back to town either as breds or feeder cattle. The price of pairs remained strong thanks to the speculation of this fall’s calf market being even stronger than last year. If they are right, the calf at side could pay a large part of the

investment in one shot Hopefully Mother Nature cooperates and the investments will be around for a few years to come.

As we roll into late spring and early summer, junior and 4-H show season is upon us. Make sure to get out and support our next generation of producers A few words of encouragement or some advice can go a long way. Supporting these shows as a sponsor or buying a 4-H steer are both great ways to show support These young stockpeople put a lot of time and effort into their projects and deserve our support.

Summer Gold shows and tours will be happening across the country soon as well. Make plans to attend some of these, especially in your area The Saskatchewan Angus Gold Show and Junior Show is scheduled for August 1st-3rd in Prince Albert These shows are a great place to see great cattle and visit with fellow cattle producers. Tours give you the opportunity to see some operations on a more personal level and visit and exchange ideas in the more laid-back manner. Make plans to attend the Saskatchewan Angus North Central tour July

23rd and 24th Plans are well underway so keep an eye on the Saskatchewan Angus website as well as social media for more information and updates.

Spring is also the time when many organizations hold their AGMs and conventions If possible, attend these when they are in your area These events are great places to learn first hand many of the programs and products that could affect your operation in the near and distant future Many also have fundraisers along with their events and the support is always appreciated. The Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association will be holding their annual AGM and Convention June 9th–11th in Swift Current and the Livestock and Forage Centre of Excellence will be holding their field day and trade show June 18th at Clavet

Moving forward, let’s hope for timely showers, tall grass, big growthy calves and more young people getting involved in our industry Let's stay optimistic!

See ya down the road

Saskatchewan Junior Angus Report . . .

Greetings from the Saskatchewan Junior Angus Board! I hope everyone is having a wet and mucky spring. The Junior board has had a great 2024 so far, and we intend to keep that ball rolling So, here’s a little update on what we’ve done, and what we have to look forward to!

The Canadian Junior Angus GOAL Conference was held in Kelowna, BC from February 17-19, 2024 Saskatchewan was represented well with 17 juniors in attendance. GOAL was jampacked with numerous exciting speakers and tours. We got to hear from industry experts like Amie Peck from the Canadian Cattle Association who spoke on “Social Media & Agvocacy in Today’s World”, John Olsen of Farm Credit Canada who discussed “Managing your Money as a Young Person”, and Kevin Boon from the BC Cattlemen’s Association taking us through “An inside look at BC Cattlemen’s Association Producer Programs”. We also gained insight from Kajal Latimer from the Canadian Angus Association on “CAA Programs”, as well we heard from Cassie Marchand of BMO and Clifton Ranch about “Opportunities in the Beef Industry” Each and every speaker was very diversified in their knowledge about the Agriculture Industry, which was super interesting to hear Although juniors were very engaged by the speakers, it was the tour throughout the Okanagan Valley that was the fan favourite! We had a big day of touring on Sunday First, we headed to the Village Cheese Company. Here we saw the process of how the local cheese company functions from production, all the way to marketing

We even got some free samples! Then we headed to Cherryville, where we had the opportunity to tour KT Ranches. Thanks to KT for providing a pizza lunch for us Farming Karma was next on the bus stop Although not in full spring swing, it was neat to see the fruit company’s variety of crops. Plus, we got to try every flavor of their fruit soda! We ended our tour with a stop at H2O Adventure and Fitness Centre, where lots of fun in the water park was had GOAL 2024 was definitely one for the books! Next year we are thrilled to be hosting it in Saskatoon.

2024 will see some changes to our Saskatchewan Junior Program. This year, the Saskatchewan Junior Angus Gold Show will be held in conjunction with Prince Albert Fair & Exhibition from August 1st to 3rd 2024 Juniors can look forward to events like graphic design, literature, photography, print marketing, team grooming, showmanship and conformation. A tentative schedule is printed on the next page. Entries will open June 1st If any breeders have interest in sponsorship, please don’t hesitate to reach out to any of our directors, it would be greatly appreciated!

We have a busy and exciting summer ahead. I encourage juniors to take advantage of every opportunity possible, between the Canadian Junior Angus Showdown and the Saskatchewan Junior Angus Gold Show, there are plenty of activities to go around I hope everyone has a fantastic summer with plenty of sun, but hopefully even more rain!
