Jeff and Josh have been busy shutting down camp over the past 6 weeks, as we didn’t finish hosting groups until the last weekend of September! What does shutting down mean? Since the temperatures are below freezing for most of the winter, they must clear all the water lines on both the Mainland and Island and winterize all the kitchen gear. All the boats also need to winterized and stored away the Sports Center. That is right! All the Winaukee fleet, except the barge, safely spend the cold winter days underneath the hoops and flags! Speaking of boats, exciting news to share! Rupert’s favorite skiboat, the yellow Malibu, is currently having a brand-new engine installed so it will be back in action for 2025! The Mainland’s red Malibu will also be getting a whole new interior this off season so will be one of the best-looking boats on all of Winnipesaukee.

Other things that Jeff and Josh have lined up for this off season include a facelift to Mainland shower houses, new lighting in most buildings, rebuilding the Big Blue Chair and on the Island, getting Lodge ready for 2025 seniors!

There will be a lot of leaf blowing, snow plowing and behind the scenes fixes and upgrades mixed in with all of the things listed, and many more to come. In other words, they will be very busy this offseason and they are so excited to see it all pay off when you get to camp next June!

HARVESTING CONNECTIONS

HOW FALL PREP FUELS OUR SUMMER ADVENTURES

As the leaves around camp turn to golden yellow and crisp red, it may seem like camp is an eternity away. However, this seasonal change signals an important time: laying the groundwork for our staffing picture for next summer.

The first step in building an exceptional staff community is ensuring we provide an experience worthy of their talents. Each year, we send out an extensive survey to gather feedback on everything from food and residential life to program experiences. Our goal is to listen, learn, and use their valuable insights to enhance the experience each year, so our top people will not only want to return but also refer other outstanding individuals to join us!

Every summer, many of our most successful staff come from referrals of those who know camp well, have lived it, and can connect us with others who will be a great fit. The fall survey is the first opportunity to identify those wonderfully matched networking connections. You may be surprised to learn that for some of our international staff, increased demand and a growing scarcity of visas mean their decision timeline to return could be as early as the end of October. Both J1 Camp Counselor and SWT (Summer Work Travel) visas require a multi-step process involving paperwork and embassy visits. For those staff, we are diligently ensuring they have a reserved path to return. While the needs of our international staff take priority, we are also actively ge connecti

“The Winaukee Upside Down

The Winaukee Way

We believe in summer. That it should awaken childhood and demand more of us. We believe in the power of discomfort to remind us of our courage. We believe camp is full of adventure; and that adventures are best lived with friends who become family. We believe in remaining curious, about the things we know and all that we may not. We believe the power of the game does not live on the scoreboard. It lives in unspoken moments on the bench. It lives in the momentary eye contact before the goal on the field. It lives in the huddle before the game and under the weight of the hand on your shoulder.

We believe that everyone has a place on the team. That no one should have to choose between individuality and belonging. And that we’re all in this together. We believe in seeking the balance between never settling for enough, and the revolutionary power of rest. That often, being bored leads to the greatest memories.

We believe in joy. That sometimes it doesn’t come easy. And that we can find it everywhere.

We believe in late nights with friends. That there is nothing like a warm summer night around the campfire; Listening to the sounds of the lake and telling stories with your buddies. Blanketed by stars and warmed by fire.

We believe that time really can both stand still and disappear in a flash. That the days go on forever but the weeks fly by.

We believe that of all our pursuits, there is nothing more valuable than creating a community that changes the lives of young people.
