May is Mental Health Awareness Month, which will be the focus of this issue. We have included things that will support your mental health and emotional wellbeing. There are fun ways to get active, delicious and nutritious snacks that are high in protein, mindfulness activities, recipes, and a workout playlist full of classics from the 90s!

DIAMOND DALLAS PAGE YOGA

Diamond Dallas Page is a retired professional wrestler who created a yoga fitness program. Warriors who have come through our Warrior Week and Warrior PATHH program have used this program and seen great results - including our very own Chris Murphy (and I’m sure he would be happy to share about his journey with anyone who is interested).

Here is a description of the program according to the website:

This program could be a great option for those looking for a starting point on their journey to improve their physical wellbeing, DDPY isn’t a one size fits all program, there are many different options, which is great especially if you have an injury or limited mobility. It also means that as you grow and gain strength or you injury heals, that you can adjust based on those changes.

You might be surprised how effective a low impact workout like yoga could be!

Variations

LEMON

1/2 lemon zested and juiced

2 tsp poppy seeds CAKE BATTER

1/4 cup sprinkles

2 tbsp vanilla protein powder

MONSTER COOKIE

1/4 cup mini M & M's

1/4 cup mini chocolate chips

ENERGY BITE BASE

2/3 cup creamy peanut butter

1 cup old fashioned oats

1/2 cup ground flax seeds

2 tbsp honey mix in's (see variations below)

DIRECTIONS

1.Combine the peanut butter, oats, flax seed and honey in a large bowl. Stir in your mix ins.

2.Place in the refrigerator for 15-30 minutes so they are easier to roll.

3.Also slightly damp hands make it easier to roll as well!

4.Roll into 12 bites and store in the fridge for up to a week.

DOUBLE CHOCOLATE

1/2 cup chocolate chips

2 tbsp cocoa powder

WHITE CHOCOLATE CRANBERRY

1/4 cup white chocolate chips

1/4 cup dried cranberries

ACTIVITIES FOR MINDFULNESS

Here are a few mindfulness exercises that you can do to support your mental health. These are great opportunities to slow down, reflect, and reset at different points throughout your day.

BREATHING

Basic breathing is a simple form of meditation that can help settle your mind. Sit or lie down in a comfortable position.

Observe your breath on the inhalation.

Observe your breath on the exhalation. When the mind wanders, gently bring it back to focusing on your breath

GRATITUDE LIST

Gratitude is a focus in our programs at Camp Southern Ground; it can be very beneficial to your mental health. Try starting a list and adding 3-5 things everyday You could write in the morning to begin your day with positivity or use it as a time to reflect at night.

MINDFUL EATING PUZZLES

Puzzles are a great mindfulness practice They can be relaxing and they can also keep your mind sharp. Here are a few different types of puzzles... Crossword Jigsaw Rebus Spot the Difference Sudoku Word Finds

We can often eat while we are doing other things... watching TV, scrolling on our phone, or driving.

Mindful eating is about putting away distractions and taking time to slow down and enjoy your meal; it could be by yourself or with family and/or friends.

Albacore Tuna and White Bean Salad

Ingredients

SALAD

1 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil

1/2 cup gluten free bread crumbs

2 cloves garlic, minced

1- 15 oz can cannelloni beans, drained and rinsed

1/4 cup flat-leaf parsley chopped

2 ribs celery, finely chopped

1/2 medium red onion, chopped

10 oz albacore tuna packed in water, drained, and roughly crumbled

1 head butter lettuce or green leaf lettuce, cleaned and leaves pulled from the stem

VINAIGRETTE

1 tbsp lemon juice

2 tsp whole-grain mustard

2 tsp Dijon mustard

2 tsp honey

1/2 tsp Kosher salt

1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper

1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil

1.In a medium skillet, heat the oil over medium-high heat.

2.Add the bread crumbs and cook, stirring frequently, until crumbs begin to brown, about 4 - 5 minutes.

3.Remove from the heat and stir in the garlic and a pinch of salt and pepper each.

4.To make the vinaigrette, place the lemon juice, whole grain mustard, Dijon mustard, honey, salt, pepper, and oil in a jar. Affix the lid and shake vigorously until emulsified.

5.In a large bowl, gently mix together the beans, parsley, celery, onion, and tuna.

6.Pour the vinaigrette over the mixture and toss gently to coat.

7.Arrange the lettuce on individual plates or one large serving platter and top with the tuna and bean mixture.

8.Sprinkle the toasted bread crumbs over the top and serve.

9.To serve as an appetizer, cut 1/2-inch slices on a diagonal from a baguette. Bruch olive oil over one side of the slice and then toast until lightly brown. Top with the salad and breadcrumbs. Serve at once.
