Fall 2020

COVID-19 Keeps Merrie-Woode’s Gates Closed for 2020

2020 will forever be a historic year for Camp Merrie-Woode. It marks the first time in its 102 year history that camp did not open for a summer season. After a tumultuous spring, the Board and staff came to the agonizing decision to cancel summer programming due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and an announcement was made on May 11, 2020 that Merrie-Woode’s gates would remain closed for the summer.

It was hard to imagine a summer silenced under Old Bald after Merrie-Woode had managed to carry on operations through the Great Depression, World War II, the polio epidemic, and the near permanent closure of Merrie-Woode in 1979. But while Camp remained physically quiet without its campers and counselors, the camp office remained a hive of frantic activity. How could we use technology to stay connected and keep that spark of Merrie-Woode spirit alive? Our camp counselors of 2020 quickly rose to the challenge. They organized themselves into teams to create and film video devotionals to send to the campers throughout the summer

We also made sure campers and counselors who had summer birthdays knew they hadn’t been forgotten just because they weren’t here to take a lap around the Dining Hall. Senior Staff filmed individual birthday messages for every birthday that would have happened during the summer sessions, complete with a birthday cake and a resounding chorus of “Happy Birthday” and “Run Around the Dining Hall.” Opening and Closing Campfires were hosted live over Zoom for all three sessions. These were the
