Mission
Merrie-Woode is a sanctuary of rarest beauty which inspires a lasting awareness of God's presence. The Mission of Camp Merrie-Woode is to use that setting to nurture the physical, intellectual and spiritual growth of girls and young women through traditional camp activities and outdoor adventures. In this friendly, noncompetitive community of simplified living, each individual is valued for who she is and who she will become.

Dear Friends,
The 104th summer at Merrie-Woode marked a significant moment of transition for the Camp community. We shared our final season under the remarkable leadership of Denice and Jim Dunn. Together they carried the torch out of our Final Campfire, signifying the end of their twenty years at Merrie-Woode and the start of a new era in our history. We know that the Spirit of Merrie-Woode will continue to live in the hearts of all the girls who come to Camp, and MerrieWoode will remain, as Dammie Day said, "A composite thing made up of all those who through the years have loved it and given it their best."
Creating and sustaining these foundational friendships depends upon the dedication and generosity of our alumane, families, and staff. It is because of your unwavering faith in Merrie-Woode and your consistent support that we are able to maintain this unique community built around our shared love of wilderness and outdoor adventure. In 2022, we were able to offer more camperships, preserve our beautiful facility, increase funding to our programs, and expand our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Inititative because of your generous gifts to the Annual Fund and to our Merrie-Woode Endowment.
Each summer, we watch campers try new activities and grow in both skill and confidence. However, it is not the activities that bring them back each year, but the friendships that they make. If you ask campers what they are most excited for each summer, the resounding answer is to "spend time with my best friends under Old Bald." Among the ideals highlighted in our Merrie-Woode values is Community. Living in a friendly, inclusive, and mutually supportive community makes it possible for girls and young women to grow into their best selves. The friendships formed at Camp often become lifelong connections.
We continue to be inspired by your commitment to preserve the Merrie-Woode Community, especially at pivotal moments in our history. The bonds formed through Camp hold us together during times of transition, and we could not do it without you. Your gifts to Camp ensure that the tiny spark of love for Merrie-Woode is lit in the hearts of each new generation of campers. We are forever grateful for your support.
With Gratitude,

Philosophy
Merrie-Woode is a traditional wilderness summer camp devoted to nurturing the physical, intellectual, and spiritual growth of girls and young women in a beautiful, natural setting. The values of simplified living, warm personal relationships and a love of nature bind our large community of campers, staff, and alumnae.

Living in rustic quarters, campers explore their interests and build their skills in areas of their choice. Our programming focuses on selfdiscovery, offering an array of outdoor and indoor activities in a noncompetitive setting. Campers are encouraged to set goals and may, over time, achieve a high level of competence, gaining self-confidence in the process.
We strive to attract campers, staff and camp families from varied backgrounds who value youthful time spent in nature. Merrie-Woode is a place where every girl is supported as an individual while acquiring a deepend awareness of God's creation and an expanded awareness of the world around her. Merrie-Woode's campers have gone on to contribute to their communities in meaningful ways throughout their lifetimes, in part because of the rich network of friendships and core values of fair play, sustained effort and respect for others that they gained while at Camp Merrie-Woode.

Values
Wilderness and the outdoors. Spending time in undisturbed natural settings helps girls develop a sense of awe for God's creation, of discovery, and of their own potential.

Simplified living. We believe in making do with less in a rustic and lowtech environment.
Challenge. Camp is a place where girls have opportunities to reach outside of their comfort zone, building responsibility, confidence, resilience, and skills.

Play. Joy, laughter, and fun are each valuable in their own right and as a basis of positive learning and development.
Spirituality. Camp Merrie-Woode is a place of reverence and is based in the Christian faith.
Integrity. We believe in honesty and fair play.
Community. Living in a friendly, inclusive, and mutually supportive community makes it possible for girls and young women to grow into their best selves.
The individual. We respect and value each member of the community for who she is and who she will become.
Friendship. We believe in the power of lifelong relationships formed at camp.

Our history. We believe in creating a future based on the best of the past, including honoring those who have loved it and given it their best.
Service. We believe in service in the camp community and service to the world beyond.
the Annual Fund

Through donations to the Annual Fund, Young Alumnae Challenge, and Tribute Gifts, the Merrie-Woode community generously gave a total of $300,180 to the 2022 Annual Fund! Our community continues to inspire us with their charitable giving, and we are so appreciative of our donors' devotion to keeping the Spirit of Merrie-Woode for future generations.
The Merrie-Woode Foundation, Inc. relies on the Annual Fund to support Camp’s operations, including the programming, staffing, and facilities. The Annual Fund also provides resources for camperships, which are tuition scholarships that provide financial assistance to many camp families and to young women who would not otherwise have the opportunity to attend summer camp.
Contributions to the Merrie-Woode Foundation, Inc. are tax deductible for individuals, corporations, and foundations within the limits of section 501(c)3 of the IRS code.

Annual Fund Donors
We are honored to recognize gifts to the Annual Fund through December 31, 2022.

Adventure Trips
Last summer, the Mountaineering and Boating Programs led single and multi-day trips that provided campers an opportunity to connect with wilderness while at Camp. The Mountaineering Program offered trips that ranged from half to five days in a variety of outdoor disciplines, including hiking, caving, backpacking, and climbing. The Boating Program maintained its long history of paddling on Class I-III rivers, such as the French Broad, Tuck Gorge, Lower Green, Nantahala, Chattooga, and Upper Green! Staff members from both areas of adventure programming led multi-sport trips that allowed campers to explore the best of both programs. The Lake Jocassee canoeing trip and the "Hidle" (hike and paddle) have proven to be some of our most successful trips.

Under the Castle Lights
This past summer, campers in our theatre program experienced a summer full of mystery, adventure and hope.

June session’s play, Cave Dream, followed five spelunkers who were trapped in an invisible cave. On a mission to state one absolute truth, the spelunkers were faced with a shrinking cave with each wrong answer and mysterious creatures appearing at every turn.

The musical, Pippin, was performed during Main session and helped campers realize that happiness does not come from extraordinary endeavors, but rather in the unextraordinary moments of everyday life.
The hard work of the cast and crew shined in these shows and campers and staff alike were amazed by the performances. A round of applause is certainly due to the 2022 players!

the Endowment Funds

Merrie-Woode's Endowment was established in 2018 through the gifts of many generous donors to the Centennial Campaign. The Endowment serves as a permanent, incomegenerating asset that supports the operation of Camp Merrie-Woode.

Within the larger Endowment are general funds supporting operations, as well as restricted funds supporting camperships, programming, building preservation, and conservation. Individual donors and groups of donors may create named endowments with gifts of $100,000 or more.
Several new named funds have been established over the last two years, affirming the importance of endowment giving to Merrie-Woode's overall financial position.
Endowment Funds Gifts
To date, Merrie-Woode's named endowments include the following:

Policy to Establish Named Endowments
Merrie-Woode invites donors or groups of donors who make endowment gifts of $100,000 or more to establish a named endowment fund, which will be recognized permanently as part of Merrie-Woode's endowment. This opportunity allows for the charitable gifts of Merrie-Woode supporters to directly fund their specific interests at camp while honoring their leadership in an enduring manner. The minimum level of $100,000 for a named fund ensures that the funds generate sufficient income for their designated purposes.

THE DENICE AND JIM DUNN BUILDING PRESERVATION ENDOWMENT FUND
