Based on the idea that the health of a community is reflected in the lives of the families that live there. Family Place is about creating opportunities for families to connect to each other, to grow and to have fun. Family Place is constantly changing so we ask you to call or drop by to get the latest information.

It’s a time and place for new babies to drop-in with their grown-ups to connect, to share, to learn from one another. An Infant Development Consultant, a Public Health Nurse, the Family Place Coordinator and other parents and babies will be there to welcome you. Drop in and join us! Yogi kids Grades 2-4 karate for beginners 5 years and up

Karate teaches students self defense, discipline, strength, coordination and focus while building self esteem and confidence!

Karate is one of the best full body exercises as it uses all muscle groups while challenging the mind. The program is designed to teach kids the Physical Literacy of the Long Term Athlete Development Strategy (LTAD) adopted by many sports around the world. These components include speed, strength, stamina and skill. Instructor: Roy Tippenhauer, NCCP Level 4 Candidate, Certified Level 3. No uniform is required.

Qigong (chee-gong)

Qigong is the skillful practice of applying life force energy using specialized breathing exercises combined with gentle, graceful movements enabling the body to strengthen, regulate the nervous system and promote deep relaxation. Movements are easily adapted. If you need to sit through a full hour or alternate sitting and standing, that is okay, says instructor Aum Song.

Qigong exercises may help to reduce stress, aid digestion, enhance body awareness, lower blood pressure, enhance stability, boost immune system and increase vitality.

Join an art group facilitated by Sophie Oh, who has a Master of Arts Degree and is a practicum student from Kutenai Institute Art Therapy. Art therapy is an alternative communication tool that helps you to express your mind, ease emotional stress and improve yourself through art activities including painting, clay, print and collage making. It is a journey to embrace oneself and have fun.

Specialized Recreation The City of Campbell River Recreation and Culture department offer the following programs which are designed for persons who have developmental disabilities. 50+ Active living Programs Integrate healthy activities into your daily life. 50+ members enjoy accessible community facilities: Community Centre and Sportsplex and can choose from over 30 activities happening every week. Some programs have reduced fees for members.

Buy an annual membership for access to free drop in activities run by member volunteers. Activities are designed for 50+ adults and seniors as well as being inclusive to persons of all ages and abilities.

50+Active Living Membership for 2012 is $18 per person.

50+ Stamp Club enjoys a visit from Penfield Stamp Club members.

Close to 150 volunteers make programs happen by decorating, driving, writing cards and a host of behind the scenes support jobs. Volunteer Program Leaders are essential to drop in activities. All volunteers are registered with Recreation and Culture and have criminal record checks.

Funds are raised for drop in supplies, new equipment and special events. Many sale items are made at programs such as Crafts, Quilting and Knitting. Everyone can find a way to contribute by donating, working at a sale or shopping with a friend or two.

Sand Volleyball Courts

There are four sand volleyball courts located on the north side of the Sportsplex, available for public use. Loaner volleyballs available at the Sportsplex front desk. Funded in part by CRUSH Volleyball Club.

Cooper’s Hawk Disc Golf Course

The Campbell River Cooper’s Hawk 18 Hole Disc Golf Course is located in Willow Point Park. Disc rentals are available at the Sportsplex office. Pay $10 down for each disc (cash or credit card) and you will get an $8 refund when you return the disc. General all-purpose discs are on sale at the Sportsplex for $10 each.

CR Skate Park

Tennis Courts

Our Skate park opened in 2008. Open year round for public use. Helmets are available for people to borrow at the Sportsplex front desk.

Hosts supervise the park at various times for a schedule call 250-923-7911.

Campbell River has 10 tennis courts. Willow Point Park has four lighted courts and a practice wall. Light Tokens can be purchased at the Sportsplex $5 for 60 minutes. Centennial Park has 4 courts and a practice wall and Robron Park has 2 courts.

Outdoor Ball Hockey Court

The outdoor ball hockey court is located in the bottom parking lot at Willow Point Park and can be used free of charge by the whole family.

Participants need to bring their own equipment.

Lacrosse Box

Discovery Pier

700 Block, Island Highway This award winning wheelchair accessible salt water fishing pier is 600 ft. long and is located parallel to the government harbour break-water.

Operator Ben Luck offers a concession May 1 to Sept. 30 for refreshments and gear rentals. Designed for year round use.

Located in Robron Park. Opened in 2011.

It is a fully fenced facility. Funded in part by the CR Box Lacrosse Association.

Bocce

McIvor Lake

There are two bocce courts located between diamonds 1 & 3 in Willow Point Park (off Parkway Road), available for public use. Key sign out at the Sportsplex front desk. Funded in part by the Campbell River Italian Cultural Society.

The Park includes all of the standard features for skaters and bikers as well as a Taco feature and one of the largest bowl features in the northwest. The park is designed to accommodate novice skaters, experts and BMX bikes.

Highway 28, Gold River Swimming and fishing. Three beaches. Two safe swimming areas (No lifeguard on duty). Boat launch. Walking trails.

LIFE is for Campbell River residents with a combined gross family income below Statistics Canada Love Income Cut Off (table on application form).

Apply At the Community Centre, Sportsplex or Strathcona Gardens if you think your family qualifies. One application form per family covers all members. Provide proof of Campbell River or Area D residency (such as a Utility bill with your address) and proof of income (such as Revenue Canada Assessment).

Receive One LIFE card per family member from City of Campbell River Recreation & Culture and one LIFE card per family member from Strathcona Regional District. All family members must be present to receive their photo card.

KidSport™ is a community-based sport charity that provides grants for Canadian children age 6 to 18 to participate in a recognized sport, led by a qualified coach. The sport must be affiliated with a member organization of Sport BC and must be a member of the Campbell River KidSport™ organization.

2-5 year olds plus an adult: Enjoy playing a variety of games on the ice with your child while you both develop your skating skills. No previous skating experience is required for the child or their parent/ guardian – the emphasis of this program is fun. Participants (adult & child) must supply their own helmets and an adult must accompany the child on the ice.

**Parent & Tot Hockey Lessons -

2-5 year olds plus an adult: Parents and tots will get a chance to develop both their skating and hockey skills during this program. Lots of fun for all.

Dash & Splash - Swimming & Skating lesson combo - 2 Lessons

for 1 Great Price. (3-5 year olds for weekday classes & 2-5 year olds plus an adult for weekend classes): Want your preschooler to develop both their swimming and skating skills? This is a great program that combines both activities in one trip to the facility. The first ½ hour is spent on the leisure ice with a skating instructor, parents then have 15 minutes to help their child get changed and head to the pool for a swimming lesson for another ½ hour. Great deal and time saver. Parent participation required for Saturday parent & tot classes.

***Little Rascals Hockey - 3-5 year

olds: Learn basic hockey skills and play a real hockey game every class! Coaches will introduce your child to the world of hockey through drills and skill development. All participants must be able to skate on their own. Little Rascals will be playing during the intermission at the Storm Game on Jan. 27. All Little Rascal participants and their families from the 2011-2012 season are invited to the Wrap Up Party on March 29th from 5:30-7:30 pm – please register for this free event at the front desk. Please sign up each family member that will be having snacks and/or skating.

**Coolest Game on Earth – Intro to Hockey - 6 & up: If you have never

played ice hockey this is the program for you. Learn basic hockey skills and have fun. All participants must be able to skate on their own.

**Puck Shooting Lessons - 6 & up: Learn about stick handling, passing and the 4 shots used in hockey. Participants must have basic hockey skills before signing up for this program.

**Girls Only Hockey Skills - 6 & up:

An ice slot for practicing stick handling, passing and shooting. Instructors will organize drills that will help hockey players improve their game. Program will take place on the Leisure Ice.

***Skating Skills for Hockey players - 6 & up: This program is targeted at young hockey players that love the game but their skating skills could use some tweaking. Guaranteed to improve your crossovers, edge control and backwards skating. Program will take place on the Leisure Ice.

**Women’s Intro to Hockey - 12 & up: The purpose of this program is to introduce women to the basic skills, to make new friends and to try the game without having to make a commitment to the entire season.

Program will take place on the Leisure Ice.

**Adult Learn to Play - 15 & up: Come and experience the game of hockey like never before! Our qualified instructors will instruct the basic skills in a fun, creative, non-competitive and non-contact environment. Each session will include supervised instruction and plenty of game play. This program is designed for both men and women aged 15+ who do not regularly play hockey, but would like to learn. Program will take place on the Leisure Ice. Private Lessons - all ages welcome:

Check out this great and convenient afterschool program. This is your chance to get a ride to the rink for some fun skating with friends or playing pond hockey with your buddies. Participants must bring their own helmet and gloves to skate. Children will be supervised by skate shop staff while they skate/play pond hockey. Registration must be done prior to 12noon on the day of desired pick up and pick up time from the rink is 5pm each day. kids quest Ages 5-12 Swimming & Skating Adventure on Pro-D Days This program provides child care on Professional Development Days with experienced aquatics and arena staff. Fun activities are planned including swimming, skating, other sports, crafts and outdoor fun. Program fees includes two snacks, all facility drop-in fees and skate rentals. A detailed schedule of activities is available from the front desk. Fun, skating and games is what this camp is all about. This program provides an introduction into the world of ice-skating and is ideal for beginner skaters that want to improve their skills. This program will help you decide what ice activities to sign up for in the fall: more skating lessons, figure skating or hockey. All you need is a helmet, bagged lunch, snacks and a bottle of water. Lots of fun and games – at least 2.5 hours of ice time everyday.

Military and emergency services personnel hockey tournament (MESP)*** Ages 19+ 10-12 team fun recreational tournament 2 divisions with Old Timers’ rules (i.e. no slap shots or body checking).

• Teams must have at least 8 players that currently or have previously been part of the military or emergency services (i.e. police, fire fighters, ambulance, court services, Coast Guard, search & rescue, D.F.O. etc.).

• Register as a team for $550.00 by March 18. Registration deadline is April 10th.

• Minimum # of team members is 7 + a goalie. The maximum # of team members is 15 + a goalie.

• Guaranteed (3) 1.25 hr. games (2-20 min. stop time periods) plus top teams get to play finals.

• Each team member must be at least 19 years of age. This tournament is co-ed.

• Each player must have full gear.

• All team members receive packages that include skate sharpening, concession coupons & draw tickets for prize baskets.

• T-shirts for winning team.

• MVP prizes for 1 player per team/every game.

This retro craze is gaining in popularity accross the country. Roller Derby leagues are popping up everywhere. Come give the sport a try.

Never been on skates before (roller or blades)! Don't worry, our team leader will teach you how to skate smoothly and in control, make a controlled stop, make a corner doing a cross over, and to teach you how to keep up with a pack of skaters. You must provide your own gear (skates, knee and elbow pads, wrist guard, mouth guard and a helmet). If the program is popular it will continue into the summer.

Lifesaving for backyard pool owners Ages 14+

The Lifesaving Society has designed the Junior Lifeguard Club for a serious purpose – but the process is pure fun. Sign up today and develop your: swimming, lifesaving, fitness, lifesaving knowledge, community education, leadership and teamwork skills and enjoy some fun competition. The Junior Lifeguard Club offers a unique aquatic alternative for those kids who really love the water. The Junior Lifeguard Club keeps kids interested and active in aquatics – especially quick learners and those caught between levels or programs. The Junior Lifeguard Club is perfect for youth who thrive in an energetic learning environment and is designed for members with differing abilities. Friends can join together even if they are of different ages and abilities. The Club welcomes members between 8 and 14 years of age as long as they can swim at least 25 meters and tread water for 2 minutes.

In 2009, the Chief Coroner of BC recommended that a Pool Advisory Group be created to develop strategies for preventing residential pool drownings involving young children as: Drowning is the 2nd leading cause of accidental death for children in BC. For every preschooler who dies from drowning, there is an estimated 6 to 10 additional hospitalizations for near drowning.

Residential swimming pools are involved in nearly half of all drowning and near-drowning incidents among preschoolers. The majority of drowning incidents in residential swimming pools are predictable and preventable events that can be avoided by restricting access to the pool area and by ensuring direct adult supervision. In the event that an incident does occur, the Lifesaving for Backyard Pool Owners course was designed to offer basic, low risk water rescue training to individuals who spend time around the water, but may not know how to swim or have weak swimming skills.

kayaking 101 Ages 14+ Improve your skills with our certified Kayaking Instructor/Guide - Daniel Inskip. The focus of the class will be on learning how to roll your kayak and improve your strokes. Participants must be able to swim at least 25 meters, tread water for 2 minutes and provide their own sea or white water kayak in order to be able to sign up. No previous experience required.

Bronze Medallion teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water rescue education - judgment, knowledge, skill and fitness. Rescuers learn self-rescue techniques, defense and release methods, and tows and carries in preparation for challenging rescues involving conscious and unconscious victims of various types, including spinal injuries and circulatory emergencies Lifesavers develop stroke efficiency and endurance in a timed swim.

Bronze Medallion includes the CPR-A certification.

Bronze Cross

Bronze Cross is designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training including an introduction to safety supervision in aquatic facilities. Candidates develop proficiency at performing patient assessments, managing aquatic spinal injuries, and preventing the loss of life in a variety of aquatic emergencies, while developing stroke endurance and fitness training skills. Bronze Cross includes the CPR-C certification.

National Lifeguard Service (NLS)

Recognized as the standard measurement of lifeguarding performance in Canada, the NLS program develops a sound understanding of lifeguarding principles, good judgment and communication skills, and a mature and responsible attitude toward the role of the lifeguard. The NLS lifeguard's primary role is to prevent injuries (and when necessary, effectively manage emergencies) and to facilitate a safe and enjoyable aquatic experience. NLS training develops the basic lifeguarding skills needed to adapt to different aquatic facilities and situations.

Assistant Water Safety Instructor (AWSI) This course provides the candidate with the knowledge and skills needed to become an AWSI, by focusing on teaching methods, learning styles, physical principles, progressions, communication, safety supervision and feedback. Candidates also must complete an 8-hour practical teaching experience.

Water Safety Instructor (WSI)

This course prepares candidates to instruct the Red Cross Swim programs. Candidates focus on strategies to introduce and develop swimming and water safety skills in the Red Cross Swim Preschool, Swim Kids, and Swim for Adults & Teens program curriculums.

BCRPA Fitness Theory Course

This is a core course for people wanting to become a personal trainer or strength, aerobic or aquatic instructor. The course covers: how to develop a workout program, physiology, skeletal and muscular anatomy, exercise risks, nutrition, strength and flexibility. You will learn fitness principals and safety in exercise design, energy systems and exercise selection. Prereading package at time of registration. Additional $70 to write BCRPA Exam (optional).

BCRPA Aquatic Fitness Module

This course includes classroom and practical applications for teaching an aquatic fitness class. Learn properties of water, class design, lesson planning, using balanced muscle exercises and more.

Aquatic fitness Adaptive Module

This course is for trained instructors wanting to work with and teach aquatic fitness classes to groups with various chronic conditions (i.e.

Parkinson’s Disease, MS, post polio, Hip/knee replacements etc.). This course includes classroom and practical study. Be prepared to be in the pool for up to five hours over the weekend.

BCRPA Fitness To Music Module

This course includes classroom and practical applications for teaching a basic fitness class. You will learn class design, lesson planning, biomechanics, use of balanced muscle group exercises and more. This course will certify you to teach dry-land aerobic programs.

Emergency First Aid (EFA)

Using hands-on training and practice this basic first aid course will give you the confidence to respond effectively to an emergency. You will learn lifesaving skills such as patient assessment, rescue breathing, CPR, and obstructed airway procedures. You will also learn to recognize and respond to respiratory and circulatory emergencies including asthma, bleeding, shock, heart attack and stroke. Includes CPR-A certification.

Standard First Aid (SFA)

Comprehensive training covering all aspects of first aid and CPR. Whether you need training for employment or simply want to be prepared to respond to life-threatening emergencies, this course will give you the skills and knowledge to act with confidence. Using practical activities and hands-on training, you will learn to recognize and treat injuries including head & spinal, soft tissue, facial, abdominal & chest, burns, bone & joint, and other common medical emergencies. Includes CPR-C certification.

Lifesaving Instructor (LSI)

Lifesaving Instructors are trained to teach and evaluate Canadian Swim Patrol, Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross, and Distinction.

Candidates are introduced to basic learning approaches and teaching strategies and apply them to teaching water rescue, first aid, and other lifesaving skills. Instructor candidates also learn about long-range and short-term planning, class management, safety supervision, and the principles of evaluation. This introductory instructor level is the base for most Lifesaving Society instructor certifications.

B.O.A.T. Exam If you own or operate a boat you are probably already required to have a Pleasure Craft Operator (PCO) Card. All operators born after April 1, 1983, as well as anyone operating a powerdriven pleasure craft under four metres (including PWCs), are presently required to have a PCO card while operating a boat. The exam-only option is available for boaters that wish to challenge the course. Call the Information Hotline at 287-9234 to make an appointment. It is recommended that you read the study guide before taking the exam.

Registrants are required to obtain 75% on the test in order to pass.

Fluid Motion – these aquatic aerobic classes are conducted in shallow water, building endurance, strength and flexibility.

Deep H20 Motion – great cardio workout, toning muscles while avoiding impact, strengthens thighs, back and abdominal muscles. Must be comfortable in deep water. Belts are provided.

Adaptive Aquatic Programs – the following programs must have a physicians consent in order to participate.

Level#1 – this shallow water class is for people starting out in a gentle active program. Patrons that have difficulty with balance and walking or have physical limitations due to orthopedic surgeries will benefit.

Level#2 – these shallow water sessions are for people with limitations such as Arthritis, Parkinson’s, M.S., Heart/Stroke conditions, recovering from an injury or surgery (i.e. hip/knee replacement, chronic back pain etc.).

Level#3 – this deep-water class is for people with the conditions listed above, and are at a maintenance level, with regards to physical activity.

A floatation belt is provided for added stability. It is optional to stay in chest deep water or move to the deep water when comfortable. Your face will not be submerged.

This specialized program is a public recreation and health care partnership. The purpose is to help individuals maintain independence and functional conditioning through prevention and management of chronic conditions. This will include physical activity (aquatic/land based) and education. Clients with congestive heart failure, asthma, diabetes, high BP, chronic lung disease, depression, renal failure, liver disease and dementia would benefit. The program is divided into 4 (6 week) sections.

The first 3 months is designed to get you on track and the second 3 months is a maintenance program which will assist you with tools for a complete lifestyle change. There are a variety of options

This program is for participants that have completed the Chronic Disease Management Program (6 month) or the Take Heart Cardiac Rehabilitation Program (3 month) that want to continue with an exercise program. For CDM participants the classes will continue to focus on strength, functional movement, balance and flexibility, both in the water and in the Fitness Studio. For Take Heart participants the program will continue in the weight room. The monthly pass allows you to use the facility during all public times (at the discretion of the Kinesiologist). This program will benefit people who have had a cardiac event or who have risk factors such as: medication to lower blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol, overweight, diabetic, smoking history, inactivity, stress, depression or lung or kidney disease. This twelve week program was developed in partnership with the Vancouver Island Health Authority. You will begin with an individual assessment and then receive an exercise prescription that is supervised twice a week by a Kinesiologist.
