Three people were taken to hospital after they were rear-ended on S. Island Highway on Wednesday.

While travelling northbound on the highway at about 12 p.m., the driver of a grey Chevrolet Impala slowed down to make a left hand turn onto 6th Avenue. A dark blue Dodge 3500 that was following behind was unable to stop and smashed into the car’s rear-end.

Campbell River RCMP’s officer on scene, Cst. Jason Bouwman, said the three occupants of the Impala have non-life threatening injuries, but police will be checking in on them.

“We’ll be following up with the occupants of the Impala,” said Bouwman.

Creighton’s comic imaginings Wind: Anemometers will cost city $5,000

im Creighton is happy that his made up characters won’t bother him at night anymore.

No, Creighton is not crazy. Instead he is a local fiction writer who is debuting his first published collection of short stories called eLKFallsbC comic imaginations of a coastal town.

Creighton said the characters he created were always on his mind while he was writing, and he’s excited to finally be able to share them with the public.

“They’re out of my head and into a book, so they don’t bother me incessantly at night,” Creighton said with a smile.

“It feels very good.

I’m very happy that the characters in this book have come alive and continue to live,” he added.

Creighton will be at Still Water Books at 2 p.m. on Saturday to release the book and read a couple of excerpts. Five hundred copies were printed and will be for sale at the book store.

acters appear throughout which links the stories together. And the book has a strong local flavour.

Set in the fictitious town of Elk Falls, B.C., Creighton called it “next door to Campbell River.”

“It has the flavour of a coastal town on Vancouver Island with all the fishing, and logging, and tourism, and all the other stuff that goes on,” explained Creighton.

He said local people have already asked him if certain characters are based on them, and Creighton’s answer is no. While he said they are made up of a composite of

all the people he has ever met in his life, the characters in his stories are completely fictional.

The book is set in modern times but with an old time feel to it, according to Creighton.

“These are the comings and goings of this little town, and how they want to try to be very modern and up to date… the attitude of the town is old even though they’re living in 2011,” he said.

And while the stories are humourous they also touch on serious issues. An example is a story about a local drunk who is called the invis-

ible man because the community can’t see him.

The collection also has some supernatural elements, including a character called Bill the Ghost.

Creighton considers himself a “closet writer,” and has written other short stories as well as some poetry that he did not publish. He said he believes people will respond well to this collection.

“I feel very excited and I feel very confident because I read a lot and I write a lot, and I consider this a genuine contribution to canadian literature,” said Creighton.

By placing the instruments at two schools, there will be an opportunity for students to collect and analyze wind data and learn about renewable energy from a live demonstration project, Zirnhelt said.

The anemometers are the first phase of the project and will cost the city approximately $5,000, which will likely be funded through the city’s Climate Action Revenue Incentive Prog ram Rebate.

The second part of the project will be determining where the best place for an actual, powergenerating wind turbine would be.

“If the city were to proceed with installing a 50 kilowatt wind turbine, it would cost approximately $375,000,” Zirnhelt said. “The electricity could potentially be used to offset the power from one of the city’s municipal facilities and assist with moving the city

toward its carbon neutral commitment under the BC Climate Action Charter.”

The turbine being considered would produce roughly 120,000 kwh per year and stand about 100 feet tall, with 30 foot blades attached. However, there are smaller turbines the city could choose to install.

The wind turbine feasibility study falls in line with the city’s Strategic Plan for 2010-2011.

“Such a project would provide the city with the opportunity to demonstrate leadership in promoting renewable energy, and working toward its carbon neutral commitments under the BC Climate Action Charter,” Zirnhelt said. “The project would be an excellent educational opportunity on renewable energy for students, visitors and other community members.”

The first step of the project – installing the anemometers – will likely get underway soon as city staff hope to collect wind data between the fall of 2011 and spring of 2012.

BC Hydro marks its 50th with a celebration BC Hydro is celebrating its 50th birthday this year with a community celebration in Campbell River.

Habitat plans to build another home KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Habitat for Humanity is planning its next home for a struggling family in Campbell River.

It’s been more than two years since the group built its first property in the River City and now Habitat for Humanity is in the beginning stages of organizing a second build.

But first it needs a good piece of land.

“Habitat for Humanity Vancouver Island North would like to extend an invitation for the City of Campbell River to partner with us once again to build safe, decent, affordable homes for the families we both serve,” said Jenna Nichol, chairman of the Campbell River site selection committee for Habitat for Humanity.

The non-profit housing program is dedicated to the elimination of poverty by building homes in partnership with families in need. The purpose of Habitat

for Humanity is to provide simple, decent, affordable housing to those who would not qualify for or be able to afford a conventional mortgage.

Two Campbell River families have already benefited from Habitat for Humanity. In spring of 2009, roughly 400 volunteers helped build a duplex on Maple Street. Both families own their section of the duplex and pay property taxes.

Habitat is eager to continue building in Campbell River.

Nichol hopes the city can provide a suitable piece of property.

“It must be residential, safe for young families, zoned for a duplex or multifamily residence, inside the city grid for water and sewer, close to bus routes, schools and other amenities, environmentally safe and sustainable, and have no need for any extraordinary leveling,” Nichol said. “It is our hope that the City of Campbell River would consider providing

Drive Smart BC Do I Have to Produce My Driver’s Licence?

For most of us, there is no way around it. If we drive a motor vehicle on a highway we must carry our driver’s licence with us at all times and produce it on the demand of a police officer. We must also allow the officer to take it in hand and examine it. There is no 24 hour grace period to produce it at your convenience, contrary to what many people commonly think.

If the officer asks, we must also state our name and current address. A response of “It’s printed right there on the licence” is not acceptable.

A driver’s licence is important to an officer doing traffic enforcement. It properly identifies you, sets out what kind of vehicles you may operate and could include other restrictions and privileges. Being able to produce your licence when asked reduces the possibility that you are a prohibited or suspended driver.

Police officers are permitted to take photos of a driver as part of their investigational notes. I often did this when I stopped a driver who could not produce a licence. The photo sometimes turned out to be important later on to positively identify the driver for court purposes. It also resolved personation complaints when the driver knew they were not properly licensed and masqueraded as a friend or family member who did to avoid prosecution.

Legal purposes aside, carrying your driver’s licence can assist medical treatment and notifying next of kin if you are killed or injured in a collision The author is a retired constable with many years of traffic enforcement experience.

Both Campbell River middle schools will receive playgrounds funded by the province while some elementary schools struggle to fill a need for new equipment for their students.

will each get a $50,000 grant as part of the province’s one-time $8 million commitment to provide 44 new playgrounds and playground updates for schools across B.C. “We were very happy with the announcement that the provincial government made and right now we’re in the process of creating

what those playground structures will look like,” said Peter Neale, secretary-treasurer for School District 72.

The Ministry of Education plans to reimburse schools that had playgrounds built in 2011. Neale said Discovery Passage school – along with Sandowne, Oyster River and Ecole des Deux Mondes – is one of those that may be eligible for reimbursement. Any money remaining after the 44 new playgrounds are built and PACs are reimbursed, will go towards upgrading or replacing equipment at existing public school playgrounds.

“Based on feed back from the school and the PACs we identified the top three priorities,” said Neale.

Those are: Discovery Passage, Sayward and Cedar schools. Neale said he is hopeful the playgrounds at Phoenix and Southgate will be completed sometime before the end of this school year, but construction is weather dependent.

At Discovery Passage school, the small Parent Advisory Council (PAC) – which has always been tasked with providing school playgrounds – has been struggling to fundraise for a new playground after the old one was taken down by the school district for safety reasons.

“The kids need to play outside but there’s not enough room for them now,” Jessica Taylor, treasurer for the school’s PAC, said at the time. She was disappointed to hear the two middle schools would be receiving playgrounds while the Discovery Passage PAC has been fighting an uphill battle for a new playground since last February.

Jack-of-all-trades and long-time local runs for seat in fall election campaign

e Ron Kerr believes his evaried experience will dhelp his win a seat on city council. y In the nearly 40 years that Kerr’s lived in Campbell River he nhas been involved in sports, business, the arts, and serving on committees. e He said he believes dCampbell River has plenty of opportunities for growth. “ C a m p b e l l R ive r offers us many unique opportunities and I’m looking forward to working with Council and staff to create an effective and accountable government,” said Kerr.

“My vision for Campbell River is one that will welcome growth and prosperity in all areas,” he added.

“A future that offers opportunity and training for our youth, good paying jobs for families, support and security for our seniors, and help and assistance for those without.”

Kerr ran a private

health clinic and college for many years with his wife Pauline.

He said he gained important skills from this experience.

“Thoughtful mediation and resolution skills played a very important part in our success,” explained Kerr.

“I will bring these skills to my position as your councillor.”

He also ran landscape, contracting, and nursery businesses for 28 years, which serviced all commercial and residential properties all over the North Island.

He said this experience has made him more aware of challenges that builders and developers face in the community.

He was director and president of the Campbell River Credit Union Advisory Planning Committee, president of the Campbell River Arts Council, River City Players and the Rotary Club.

Ron Kerr is running for a seat on city council.

He wears a kilt in celebration of his Scottish heritage.

He was also a member of the Spirit Square Steering Committee which designed Spirit Square.

Presently he is vicechairman of the Community Advisory Committee, and sits on the steering committee for the new Sustainable Official Community Plan (SOCP). Ker r said this experience will help him if he is

to gain a seat on city council.

“This varied experience has made me aware of many different points of view throughout the city,” explained Kerr.

Kerr wears a kilt in celebration of his family’s heritage, and he is founder of the Tartan Society of Campbell River.

He is dedicating his election campaign to his great grandfather, Alexander Kerr, who served as a city councillor during the birth of the country.

Kerr said the values of that time are as important today as they were then, and he promises to respect them and to make Campbell River better.

“This city is our home and I want it to be a welcome, prosperous and safe place for all of us, said Kerr.

“I want an open City Hall working hard to make Campbell River everything we all know it can be.”

Campbellton deserves attention Once again, the businesses in Campbellton have rallied together to get some action on improving the oldest part of the city.

It seems like this is a regular occurrence.

Other times, it was just getting decent services or some beautification.

It begs the question, when will they get the

attention they demand? Can there be anyone in the city who is not familiar with the challenges Campbellton faces? Given that nothing much changes, are we to conclude that nobody at City Hall cares? That’s hard to believe, yet nothing happens.

The contrasts are blatant. Willow Point gets millions spent on improvements but there’s nothing available for Campbellton. Certainly, Campbellton got the new Inland Island Highway. That was a provincial project. Move a block east and you get the hodge-podge of commercial, light industrial and residential properties and dusty old streets with few sidewalks and a lot of ditches.

Campbellton is not as popular for residential development as the south end of the city. It’s not likely to become another Georgia Park but that doesn’t mean it can’t find an identify of its own – different from the “other side of the tracks” image it has now. Urban renewal is not a new concept.

It’s going to take more than a few planters to improve the city’s northern entrance. Certainly, these kinds of improvement projects are dependent on federal and provincial funding programs but the city puts forward projects for their consideration.

Maybe it’s time to put Campbellton’s name in for some improvements.

While I don’t know Mayor Cornfield personally, I have met him on a few occasions and watched him in “mayoral” action on our local cable TV coverage of City Council meetings.

These have formed, in me, the impression of a man who is comfortable in his own skin and who embraces life, with it’s day to day challenges, of both the unex pected and the predictable varieties. He seems a man who gives his best effort and takes his responsibilities seriously.

Charlie enjoys the community he represents with camaraderie and zest, continually volunteering his services for local charitable fundraisers and sharing his good humor and relaxed demeanor at community events. A true man of the people. He oversaw several positive community improvements, such as the highly successful Spirit Square transformation, and the sea side highway upgrade between Rockland and Hilchey Public service is often a thankless job, which by its civic nature, invites strong opinion from the people served.

Most recently, in his letter to the community, he paid tribute to the axiom that behind every good man there is a good woman by publicly honoring his wife for her support and patience. Thank you both, for your years of community service. A job well done!

I watched Rick Mercer’s report on swimming with the salmon and I tell ya, I’m moving to that Campbell River place.

Okay, I know, I already live here.

Rick was preaching to the converted when I watched his segment of floating down the river. It’s always interesting to see how television portrays things. The Campbell certainly looked longer than it is as frequent cutaways and edits made it look like his run took longer than you might think.

But the beautiful, clear water, verdant forested banks and the spectacular Elk Falls Canyon translated well to television sets across the nation.

Certainly a great postcard from Campbell River – wish you were here.

Mercer is always a hoot and he looked like he was having fun. It was great publicity for the community and definitely for Jim DeHart’s Destiny River Adventures.

In terms of laughs though, I got more chuckles out of the first segment in which Mercer and pop singer Jann Arden went up the CN Tower to hang out at the top – literally.

I guess the thing to do on Canada’s highest structure is to strap a cable to a safety wire and walk around the perimeter. You’re encouraged to lean out from the edge with your butt hanging over the city of Toronto.

Now there’s a worthwhile tourist attraction – moon the residents of Canada’s biggest city.

That’s almost worth leaving the winsome shores of Vancouver Island

to travel to our biggest of Big Smokes to indulge in.

Arden is a funny woman (I like her music too) and complements Mercer’s zany behaviour with her own.

She was the one who pointed out that all of Toronto could see her butt when she was suspended over the edge.

Mercer has conquered Toronto many a time and now he’s conquered Campbell River. Residents lined the bank of the Campbell with signs saying Hi Rick and welcome.

It cracked me up when he pulled up to a riverside dock and was invited to have a beer. He politely declined but did wryly note it was Lucky Lager being offered – how Campbell River.

I wonder if a Guinness or something a little more high-brew would have enticed him?

Meanwhile, swimming with the salmon continues to be the quintes sential thing to do in Campbell River You wonder if it is ever going to lose its lustre but it certainly doesn’t appear to be. Have to remember to keep the river full of salmon.

Speaking of salmon...I was happy to see the progress being made on the former Ocean Blue Cedar sawmill site.

Another chunk of the Campbell River estuary is being converted back to a natural state under the magical touch of Jim Van Tine. Native plants and a daylighted stream bed provides more natural nursery for returning salmon.

It’s all good work and will go a long way to ensuring there are salmon to swim with in the Campbell River.

Community supports children going back to school The 11th Annual Campbell River Women’s Centre School Supply Drive and Distribution was a great success, thanks to the many generous volunteers, private community donors, and business donors.

This was truly a stellar example of how a community can get behind a good cause to benefit families struggling on low income.

We were able to distribute bags of new school supplies to more than

375 children who live on low income.

We would like to sincerely thank Walmart for being such a fantastic community supporter. Walmart staff and employees went out of their way to put together a massive order of school supplies for us. Walmart doubled the profits we made at our hot dog sale and donated more than $2,000 in store credit and goods.

The Coastal Community Credit Union

donated $1500 from a Coastal Community Fund grant, and $900 from a hot dog sale.

Credit Union employees tirelessly shopped, sorted, and bagged supplies.

The Altrusa Club of Campbell River ladies sorted supplies and helped with the busy task of distribution.

Donations from a variety of other individual and small business donors made this a stellar year for fami-

lies of Campbell River.

Our own volunteers and staff members put in many hours of volunteer time for this annual cause. What a great community effort!

Our non-profit charitable organization has been supporting women and families in Campbell River for 29 years. We are proud to be a part of such a caring community.

We give out donations of personal care

and hygiene items, as well as women’s clothing, throughout the year, with an average of 500 drop in visits each month.

We are always in need of these items that can be dropped off Monday – Thursday from 10-3 at 1265A Ironwood Street.

ZERO – On the day of Sept. 2, I was on a bike ride with two friends in the Beaver Lodge Lands, when I was knocked off my bike and slammed into the ground by a girl on a horse from behind.

I had no idea that the horse was coming from

behind because the rider gave no attempt to warn me to move until it was too late. I don’t exactly know what happened, but I ended up being thrown off my bike and landing on the other side of the path. After taking a hard slam to the ground, the rider said “sorry” and continued to ride away leaving me on the ground

in shock with nasty cuts, scrapes and blood on my clothes. I was very angry because she did not seem to care about my situation and acted carelessly. An older man on a bike followed behind and stopped to ask if I was okay, and I told him I was not seriously injured.

I was not really thinking at the time so I could not

realize if he knew the girl on the horse or not but he continued to follow after her. I last saw her and the horse leaving the parking lot of the main trail and heading near the ERT road. I think hard about what could have happened if the horse would have seriously injured me and I am angry that

respect for a person in front of her. Many people are upset about kids riding dirtbikes, but I am bothered that a horseback rider could not simply respect others and share a trail.

I have nothing against horses and I realize that accidents happen, but I’m upset towards the way the rider acted in the event.

Kids theatre group keeps it young after 18 years

nne Youngâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s decision to have a childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s theatre was prompted by her daughter Allison who encouraged her to do something she knew her Mom was always interested in.

and live theatre and as Allison said â&#x20AC;&#x153; you have the perfect last name to call the new venture.â&#x20AC;?

So Young Theatre began. Ads went out and 14 young people ranging in age from 8 to 15 were interested in being involved.

Rehearsals were at Sandowne Elementary School, the performance was at the Tidemark Theatre and the old-

fashioned costumes were from Imagination Unlimited. Stage manager was Lynne Macara, Assistant Stage Managers were Allison Enns-Camp and Sharon Huuha, green room helper was Denise Comeau, poster created by Lorna Pennock and Don Young moved stuff as usual.

of that first group, Young realized that two of the cast, Hadley and his wife and Karena and her husband just became new parents this year and Elise had her second child. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wonderful what can happen in 18 years. Anne Young reflects on this magical time with such a warm feeling. 18 years ago this wonderful group of young people came together and worked very hard to make their director, all those that worked on the show and their parents very proud.

Some things havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t changed for Young and that is that she still looks forward to meeting the new children arriving at Young Theatre and those who have been with her before all to share the magic of live theatre. Some feedback from parents over the years â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the experience helps with reading skills, self esteem and confidences. Young people enjoy team work and new friendships are made.

Campbell River Living Cancer de Mama transforms women’s lives CANCER DE MAMA VOLUNTEER

T

hey arrived in the hours before daylight; bundled, breasts concealed, heads bowed and hearts heavy.

Mexican women, all with breast cancer, and all with the hope that there might be a breast prosthetic for them.

For the previous year, women in Canada and the US have been quietly raising funds, gathering used prosthetics, prosthetic bras and regular bras that other volunteers will transform into prosthetic bras. Scores of other women have been knitting tit bits, cotton filled breast prosthetics complete with nipple, by the hundreds. All of these efforts have poured into the La Penita RV Park in Nayarit, Mexico. For the next three days, 325 women from as far away as Guadalajara, Tepic, Puerto Vallarta will come here to be transformed.

Unfortunately, in Mexico, it is not uncommon for breast cancer survivors to be made to feel dirty; the men in their lives shun them, their families shun them and sometimes even their whole village shuns them. Times are changing, but still two women in the same village suffering from the same cancer might not even know that the other exists. There is no support group,

there is no Cancer Society, and in many cases there is no information and precious few resources to deal with the physical and emotional damage of breast cancer.

But these women have hope, and as the days progress, the rewards shine through. As each woman is fitted with her prosthetic bra and tit bit she emerges from the fitting room, coat over her arm, like a butterfly from a cocoon. Her hands fly to her face as she views herself in the mirror. A wide grin splits her face as she realizes how beautiful she still is, and the tears overflow. Others shake their booty and dance through the room, out the door and into the waiting arms of loved ones.

The air is filled with “Gracias, gracias.”

There are hugs, more tears, and lots of clapping and cheering from the volunteers.

“Bonita Chi Chi’s” we call out; “beautiful boobs,” as indeed they are!

There is also much heartache, and none of us remains untouched.

The most fragile women, those still undergoing chemo, are assisted by helping hands on either side. Their transformation begins quickly as they are first fitted with a wig or hat so that they can enter the fitting rooms feeling less naked.

surely be only a few weeks old; held so that the mother can be given her chance in the fitting room.

We wonder aloud how much time the baby and mother will have to share.

“Interpreter needed,” a voice calls out and another volunteer rushes to help with what we know must be more than just a prosthetic fitting.

A young woman has arrived fresh from her surgery, drain tubes still in, with a body too sore to even wear a bra, but she doesn’t want to miss this once yearly chance for a prosthetic. She will leave with everything she needs to weather the next weeks of discomfort, as well as her new bra and her new breast tucked into her bag.

As a fitter struggles to get just the perfect fit with the prosthetic breast, the young Mexican woman reassures her with gestures and broken English.

“Do not worry, it is perfect. The other breast will be taken in April.”

More tears flow.

“May I have some pretty bras,” the volunteer fitter asks me as she fights back tears. “She is only 15.”

I dig through the dozens of bras, determined to find the most feminine ones I can.

“Thank you,” the fitter whispers as she takes them away. I notice that she has regained her composure and is once again ready to brighten the small cubicle she works in.

In the early morning of the second day, before the first of the ladies arrive, a volunteer shares a note she has received, painstakingly translated into English.

It reads, “God bless the hands that gave me a beautiful life again. Thank you.”

event put on every year in La Penita, Mexico. Over 300 women are served during this three-day event in February; it provides support for those diagnosed with breast cancer.

Although surgery is readily available in Mexico, there is no follow-up care; the Cancer de Mama event supports Mexican women by providing bras, prosthetics, wigs, scarves and many other items.

Such support is much appreciated for the positive impact it makes in their lives.

Donations will be accepted and all funds will be used to support the three-day event by purchasing supplies for event set up, provision of lunch for the women and their families, as well as purchasing other required materials.

Donations of school supplies are also welcome, as Linda and her husband Murray take down a small amount each year and they are certainly appreciated by teachers and students.

Event volunteers come from the RV Park itself and the surrounding area.

Eppie Burrell, Mavis Larmour and Ruehlen have been involved from this community, as well as Linda McCluskey from Quadra Island and Carole Thacker from Cortes Island, so there is a lot of local input.

The goal is to have over 100 women attend – so why not join the crowd?

The Campbell River Art Gallery is gearing up for a busy fall, with a wide variety of classes on offer for people of all ages.

Adults with an art project on the go will want to participate in Sandra Lamb’s Art a la Mode class. Part One of Art a la Mode runs on Friday afternoons from Sept. 23 to Oct. 21 for five sessions.

Lamb is a renowned artist and instructor who will provide her expertise and guidance as needed. Bring

in your own projects in watercolour, acrylic or oil paints and she will be there to guide you.

The cost for the five sessions is $112.50 for Gallery members and $122.50 for non-members.

Lamb will also be offering Art a la Mode, Part Two on Fridays from Nov. 25 to Dec. 16.

Evelyn Burley 1933- 2011

Mom and Grandma passed away peacefully in her sleep the morning of September 5th, 2011.

She was predeceased by her husband Vern in 1993, her parents, George and Alice and younger brother Ron RIchardson. She is survived by her daughterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s family Leslie and Rob, Hunter and Erin Davidson, her sonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s family Scott and Sylvia.

Kevin (Paige) and Jason Burley. Mom is also survived by her sister, Loreen Eck her husband Carl, their ďŹ ve girls and their grandkids and great grandkids, as well as her brotherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s family of three kids and his grandkids. Many Burley relatives as well.

Mom was born in Port Alberni where she went to school, and worked at Woodwardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. She met and married Vern Burley in 1955. They moved to Campbell River in 1962. Who knew that many New Yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dinners, summer camping trips to Loveland Lake and trips to Alberta would follow? Mom worked at Tyee Pharmacy on the Plaza for years. Mom also volunteered over the years for the Campbellton School PTA, as a Girl Guide leader and commissioner, the Diabetic Assoc., and the Condo Assoc.

Momâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hobbies were reading, spoiling her grandchildren and traveling.

After Dad passed, Mom went traveling. She ventured to England, down through the US, took many cruises and even made it to Kenya on safari.

Her favourite was going to Australia to ďŹ nd a branch of our family. She had so much fun, Mom went three times to stay with our cousin Barb and her family.

Momâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s service is Sept. 17th, 2011 at 1pm at St. Peterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Anglican Church, Reception to follow at the Eagleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hall. Please bring your memories to share with us.

Thanks to Doctors Veerapen, Wilcox and Depew and the staff of New Horizons for taking great care of Mom. In lieu of ďŹ&#x201A;owers donations can be made to the Diabetes Assoc., Alzheimerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Assoc. or Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Dr. Alan Keith Hancock -- beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away in peace at the age of 87 surrounded by family on September 10th, 2011.

Alan was born in London, England on August 12th, 1924. He grew up and went to school in the county of Kent, in southeast England. After graduating from Guys Hospital medical school in London he entered the Royal Air Force and assumed the rank of ďŹ&#x201A;ight lieutenant. While in England he married his wife of 62 years, Brenda Mary Hancock. In 1951 they immigrated to Canada where Alan began practicing medicine in New Westminster before moving to Vancouver Island. In 1954 he and Brenda ďŹ nally settled in Campbell River and began a practice with Dr. Richard Murphy. Together with Dr. Murphy and Dr. John Ross they founded the Alder Medical Centre in 1965. After a gratifying 45 years of serving the community of Campbell River, he retired at the age of 71. Alan soon realized that retirement wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t what it appeared to be and he continued to practice medicine in smaller communities such as Gold River and Tahsis. In 1999 he was recognized with an award from the Canadian Medical Association for his years of service in the ďŹ eld of medicine.

Alan loved classical music and often played his favourite pieces on the family piano. He frequently traveled to Victoria to see the latest opera or symphony. For many years he was actively involved with the Shriners and enjoyed playing bridge with fellow members. Every Sunday he attended the service at the Anglican Church, often escorting one of his grandchildren to Sunday school. Alan loved working in his garden producing everything from vegetables to ďŹ ne roses. Fly-ďŹ shing with his late friend Saul Clitheroe in the upper Quinsam Lake area was also one of his passions. Alan liked to travel. Along with regular visits to Britain, he also toured Namibia, Saudi Arabia, Australia and New Zealand. In Cuba he had the pleasure of sharing company with Yuri Gagarin, the ďŹ rst man in space.

Predeceased by his son John and sister Audrey, Alan leaves his loving wife Brenda, sons Peter (Fran), David and Geoff (Kim), grandchildren Justin (Mandy), Amanda (Tony), Keith, Robyn, Megan, and his recent great grandchild Everly.

We will always remember Alanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s caring heart and gentle spirit.

We love you Grandfather always and forever. The family would like to thank all of the staff of the Campbell River Hospital for their compassion and professional care.

Reverend Dr. Blair Haggart at the St. Peters Church at 228 South Dogwood St., Campbell River, BC will hold a Celebration of Life on September 20th, 2011 at 1:00 pm. Following the service, everyone is invited for a time of fellowship and luncheon.

January 4th, 1991â&#x20AC;&#x201C; September 4th, 2011 Loving son, brother, devoted friend and teammate passed away courageously Sunday, Sept. 4th after a lengthy battle with Brain cancer.

Qualifications: - Degree or diploma from a recognized institution in aboriginal business administration, public and/or business admin, financial management or Equivalent. - Professional management or acctg designation an asset. - Minimum of ten (10) years related experience working up the ranks of a first nations’ environment including at least 3 years at a band manager or administrator level with supervision of 10+ staff and budget responsibility of $1 million+. - Computer and spreadsheet expertise, proposal writing and presentation skills. Ability to attend evening and weekend events as required. Possession of a valid B.C. driver’s license and reliable vehicle. - Must pass a criminal records check. - Must have ability for travel. - Salary as per KDC Pay Equity Program.

Library hosts breastfeeding challenge In celebration of National Breastfeeding Week, mothers and babies are invited to a breastfeeding challenge at the library on Oct. 1.

They will join hundreds of women in Canada for this fun challenge to see which community has the most breastfed babies.

10th year, started in British Columbia with 856 babies and mothers at 26 sites. By 2009, there were 4,766 babies at 246 sites in 21 countries who took part in this friendly competition. Mothers, babies and other family members are invited to a half-hour story time at 10:30-11 a.m., and the official breastfeeding count starts at 11 am at the library. Women who are pregnant are also invited to attend this community event.

Last year, Toronto tied for first place in Canada and second place in the world out of 272 participating sites for the most children breastfeeding at one time.

Research shows that breastfeeding provides many health benefits for both mother and

baby. It reduces the risk of sudden infant death syndrome, as well as gastrointestinal, ear and respiratory infections during infancy and childhood. Breastfeeding reduces the risk of diabetes and of being overweight or obese during adolescence and adulthood.

“There is a lot of pressure on new mothers not to breastfeed, says Elaine Julian, Customer Services Librarian – Children and Youth Services.

“Breastfeeding is challenging, but it’s the most healthy way to start a child’s life,” she adds.

At the Oct. 1 event, public health nurses and nutritionists from Va n c o u ve r I s l a n d Health Authority will be on hand to answer questions.

Killer Whales jump back into the pool

September means a new swim season for the Campbell River Killer Whales Swim Club, and with the pool filled with water, it also means a better start than the previous year when the pool was closed for renovations.

“I know that our swimmers are anxious to get into the pool early this year and get the jump on our competition, after all it is an Olympic Year,” said Head Coach Chris Koopmans.

Last year the Killer Whales had a slow start to the year and were forced to travel to Courtenay for practices after construction delays

kept the pool from opening until early this year.

The River Runners running club has existed in Campbell River since the mid 1980s.

The club hosted the first Vancouver Island Race Association (VIRA) event in 1988 with a 10 km race that started and finished at Strathcona Gardens.

Over the years the club has gone through some name changes but the original name was

adopted once again in 2000.

The club hosts two races per year: The Miracle Beach 10K, 5K walk/run and a 1 K kids fun run (October 16, 2011) and the Merville 15K (April 1, 2012).

In December 2010 a new committee was elected and a registered society was formed in 2011.

Current committee members are Dawn Christenson, Murray Galloway, Linda Nagle, Kevin Onclin, Sandra Stewart and Ken Wright.

The aim of the club is to connect runners with other runners as well as hosting the two annual races each year.

The River Runners Association is currently looking for new members.

Membership only costs $10 per year and current members will receive $5 off their Miracle Beach registration fee.
