Agility, collaboration, singular focus, aggressiveness – these are the essential elements of economic renewal in Campbell River.

This is the formula for Campbell River’s success spelled out in convincing fashion by Jobs, Tourism and Innovation Minister Pat Bell this week.

Bell and a small platoon of ministry facilitators descended on Campbell River Monday to stage what most participants considered to be a thought-provoking day of brainstorming about the city’s future prosperity.

More than 60 of the city’s civic, political, educational, business and First Nations leaders assembled at the Coast Discovery Inn for what was billed as a “BC Jobs Plan regional economic investment pilot project forum.”

After eight hours of strategic give and take about the city’s economic future the answers were still just out of reach, but a list of potential projects was emerging and the pathway ahead was well marked.

Bell bullish on high-speed sawmill Continued from A1 development were laid on the table. Rivercorp CEO Vic Goodman said this list would be distilled by a smaller local committee over the next 60 days to form a short list of initiatives that the government can support.

On the table Monday were: Natural resources education facilities, an aquatic park, a geo-science mapping initiative, destination marketing, green energy projects and more.

In a briefing with the media, the minister listed a few ideas that caught his interest including: the development of a green industrial park, expansion of the city’s port capacity, aboriginal tourism and – one of his pets – lumber manufacturing.

Throughout it all, the need for First Nations partnerships was top of mind for Bell.

In a speech to forum participants he said, “One of the reasons why I was attracted to Campbell River is because of the work

and the leadership of the First Nations in the room here ... and the relationships that exist. There is no question in my mind that if you have an adversarial relationship with First Nations t h i n g s will grind down in the courts, you Pat Bell won’t move projects ahead in a timely fashion and no one will win.”

In a session with local media the minister embellished: “The relationship between the First Nations community and the local political leadership is very solid.

“First Nations leaders and the non-aboriginal leaders are kind of aligned in their view and are trying to move things forward economically. I sensed more than anything a desire, a real commitment to focus efforts and move forward.”

Bell is bullish on the prospect of developing a high speed sawmill

in the region. Again it was an opportunity to highlight collaboration with First Nations.

“We did lots of work when I was the minister of forests on this.

The estimates I was provided clearly indicate a log supply of upwards of two million cubic metres per year of second growth (on Vancouver Island).”

One of the challenges, he told reporters, is that the potential timber supply is “held in many different hands.”

“If we are going to get a high speed second growth mill built on central and northern Vancouver Island we’ve got to do it in collaboration with existing tenure holders who are prepared to make the type of commitment necessary to secure a fibre supply.

“We are allowed to award tenure to First Nations communities,” Bell reminded the media.

Dan Smith, a member of the Laich-KwilTach First Nation and an executive member of the First Nations Summit Task Force, said: “Once we have final agreements with respect to negotiating, the economy will be stimulated. So that collaboration that (Bell) talks about is very important.”

With respect to forestry, Smith said: “We need to find ways of dif fusing systemic barriers so we are able to get the wood out of those isolated and remote areas where First Nations are and where there are other tenures.”

The need for partnerships with First Nations was reinforced with respect to potential aquaculture expansion, a sector beset by green lobby protests.

Bell said: “What the community needs to decide...is if they want to go to the wall on aquaculture. I’m not suggesting they shouldn’t. I think the aquaculture industry

is a great opportunity.

But there has been enor mous pressure created by different org anizations and groups and individuals that has gone far beyond a few American funders of environmental groups.

“I think if First Nations came forward and said this is something that has enormous potential it could make the list,” the minister said.

Mayor Walter Jakeway said he was very encouraged by Bell’s emphasis on collaboration with First Nations.

“Our city council encourages that and I love partnering with First Nations,” he said.

Jakeway said meetings with representatives of local bands have been ongoing and, as a result of the forum, another round of meetings with local bands is planned for this month.

The mayor also reiterated his desire to have a second, less formal round of local consultations in two or three weeks “to catch the next level, the blue collars ... because small business wasn’t really (represented) that much.”

Man charged with aggravated assault in stabbing A 23-year-old man remains in custody following the stabbing of another young man.

Cameron Desmond Harry is charged with aggravated assault in knifing incident involving a 23-year-old man.

On Saturday, at 2:05 a.m., RCMP were called to the 600 block of 7th Avenue where the victim was found with multiple stab wounds.

He was taken to Campbell River Hospital and was listed in stable condition.

Harry was arrested at the scene and appeared in Campbell River provincial court on Monday. He was remanded in custody and is due to appear next in court on Feb. 13.

Busy week for the Mounties The RCMP responded to more than 230 calls for assistance last week including 14 crimes against persons, another 26 property crimes and one impaired charge.

On Saturday, at 9:26 p.m., officers responded to a motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Merecroft and Alder.

A 40-year-old Courtenay male operating a Pontiac Sunfire was eastbound on Merecroft when he failed to stop at Alder. He entered the intersection and struck a southbound Dodge Caravan operated by a Campbell River man.

Three people were transported to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

The operator of the Sunfire was issued a ticket for failing to stop.

On Friday at 10:19 a.m., RCMP found a driver slumped over the wheel of a vehicle on Glenmore Road. Police found a 48-year-old female who admitted to taking a variety of prescription and nonprescription drugs. The driver was found to be impaired by a drug and charges of Care and Control of a Motor Vehicle are being recommended.

Prosperity not enough of a priority in SOCP for the Chamber of Commerce MIA HEITLAND CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

The Campbell River District Chamber of Commerce is asking the city to make economic prosperity a more significant part of the Sustainable Official Community Plan.

In a report on the proposed SOCP released last week, the CRDCC urged the city to focus on creating a positive business environment, and to expand affordable housing options, particularly in the downtown core.

“An economic prosperity plan and economic development strategy were not part of the parallel planning efforts integrated into the SOCP and should be a higher priority in the city’s SOCP,” said the report released by chamber board chair Gary Thulin and executive director Colleen Evans.

“The economic prosperity plan should establish principles to shape public policies to connect our economic strength to a healthy community.”

The report was issued on behalf of, and based on feedback from, the chamber board, staff and members.

“The SOCP should remain a positive general document outlining opportunities for growth and allowing business enterprise to flourish in the long term,” the chamber

report states.

Recommendations from the CRDCC include: developing business friendly municipal processes to asses development applications; continuing to provide incentives to make certain areas of the city more attractive to potential investors and developers; and welcoming future developments that make both business and planning sense.

“The chamber opposes restrictions, but is very much in favour of incentives that will make certain areas of the city more attractive to potential investors or developers,” said the re por t. “Cur rently the economic climate in the region is such that perceived or real restrictions to economic development and growth would be detrimental to any future growth.

“The city should allow growth to occur wherever businesses decide to invest as best policy and develop processes to screen application and determine feasibility.”

Affordable housing for local workers was also a priority for the chamber.

have difficulty meeting their housing need, and the ability to recruit new employees,” reads the report.

“The city can and should develop initiatives that would broaden the downtown residential base as the best incentive for businesses to choose downtown commercial locations.”

The CRDCC also wants to continue to work with the city on the “Workforce Development Development within a Rural Transitioning Economy” project which it has spearheaded. City council is making a final push to approve the SOCP before Feb 28. If the plan is not adopted by that date, a $140,000 grant from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities Green Municipal Fund and a $20,000 grant from the Real Estate Foundation of B.C. will be pulled.

The Sustainable Community Plan took 18 months to draft and the process included consultations with youth, community stakeholders, the general public, school district and First Nations.

The document sets out policy guides for city council and sets the vision and direction of the city for the next 50 years. The plan has had first and second reading and will go to public hearing Feb. 8 at 6:30 p.m. before receiving third reading.

School District 72 received some good news and some bad news from its secretary-treasurer at a board of education meeting Jan. 10.

The district will receive more funding from the province than expected this school year but less than expected next year.

The biggest reduction for the 2012/13 school year will be in funding protection dollars, which are allotted to school districts to give them time to adjust to declining numbers, and as a consequence, declining funding.

This school year, school district 72 was awarded $508,000 in funding protection as well as $492,000 in enrolment decline funding.

Next year, however, those amounts will be significantly reduced.

Neale said based on the new funding formula, the school

“Other changes in funding for 2012/13 are expected for transportation, small school and CommunityLINK. Based on information to date, it is not clear what budget impact these will have.”

Meanwhile, the financial picture for the current school year is looking a little brighter.

For the 2011/12 budget, the provincial gover nment is expected to dole out an extra $115 per student in one-time funding, plus an increase in special education funding ($174,200), Aboriginal Education funding ($56,840), and English as a Second Language funding ($32,160).

Peter Neale, school district secretary-treasurer, said the new totals will figure in to this school year’s budget.

“We will be considering these revised revenue dollars in the final budget being prepared for the end of February,” Neale said. “We do not anticipate any needed changes in staffing or expenditures from the revised revenue information.

“At this time, we are planning to use the additional dollars for consideration in the 2012/2013 budget cycle to address the funding reductions.”

district will only be allowed protection dollars when overall funding drops below 98.5 per cent of the prior year funding. That means the school district will need to budget for up to a 1.5 per cent reduction in funding if there is declining enrolment.

“To understand the impact of this change, if we assume the new formula was applied for 2011/12 budget cycle we would have not qualified for funding protection and would have needed to plan for operational savings of an additional $508,084,” Neale said.

In the last budget, the board had already made cuts to shave off $816,000 and would have needed to consider the additional $508,084 shortfall in its budget planning.

Neale said it’s possible that the budget for next school year could have a $775,069 shortfall based on the funding reduction.

“It is important to note that with the funding decline, our structural deficit is likely to increase further due to uncontrolled factors, such as MSP rates, benefit and pension rates, and BC Hydro costs to name a few,” Neale said.

DNA may have solved break-in DNA evidence is being used to solve a September break and enter at 986 Shoppers Row. At the time officers spotted a suspect vehicle fleeing the crime scene. The vehicle was

located blocks away abandoned with clothing associated to the perpetrator left behind.

Initial efforts to locate the suspect failed. Through DNA collected at both the crime scene

and in the abandoned stolen vehicle a suspect has been identified. A report to Crown Council is being prepared requesting an arrest warrant for the suspect.

A meeting between city council and the Va n c o u ve r I s l a n d H e a l t h Au t h o r i t y (VIHA) did little to solve doctors’ concerns surrounding new hospitals for Campbell River and the Comox Valley.

Mayor Walter Jakeway said council discussed a number of issues with VIHA Chief Operating Officer Howard Waldner and health authority board chair Don Hubbard in Parks-

ville last Wednesday.

“Most major issues and concer ns were introduced, although not resolved,” Jakeway said.

The most pressing issue for local doctors is VIHA’s proposed one hospital, on two sites business model. Under that structure, the medical staff at both the Campbell River and the Comox Valley hospital would work as a single, cohesive unit.

Campbell River doctors worry that under that model Campbell

River medical care will suffer at the expense of a larger, Comox Valley hospital.

Doctor Roy Minaar, Campbell River medical staff president, said at a meeting last month the model is open to interpretation but insisted “I believe acute care services will all go to one site – and it won’t be Campbell River.”

Dr. Grant Hollett, the health authority’s director of planning and community engagement, wrote in a letter

at the current hospital site on 2nd Avenue, and a new hospital in the Comox Valley. The cost of the project is estimated at $550 million.

VIHA formally submitted the business case, requesting funding for the project, to the government in late December.

The health authority said there is no timeline as to how long it will take to get a response.

Jakeway said he worries that once the funding is approved, VIHA will ignore the doctors’

“This project provides us with an excellent opportunity to create a new medical staff collaborative model between both communities that will maximize the quality and access of our services,” Hollett wrote in his letter.

Jakeway said both parties talked about conducting future meetings, which he said are certainly required.

“Several significant hurdles need to be cleared to increase the benefits of meetings between and with VIHA, the regional hospital board and neighbouring local governments.”

We need to decide what direction our community most go. We also have to decide that all these disparate agencies in our community have to work together to bring about real change.

The signs indicate that decision has been made as First Nations and local government have shown they intend to build on the success cooperation has

generated in the past and ride that into the future.

We are at the mercy of provincial, national and international economic circumstances with little ability to influence them. However, we can create a climate locally that can take advantage of circumstances as they come along. If we have our house in order we can jump on opportunities with a unified and focused plan that will attract resources.

Nature abhors a vacuum and if Campbell River area officials are sitting around saying “we don’t know what we want to do” then we will repel investment, rather than attract it. So, let’s be attractive...and unified.

Are they so blind to the harm they’re doing or do they just not care?

I read with interest and concern Alice Woods recent letter regarding cuts to Coast Guard MCTS funding.

These are the folks who are in charge of search and rescue on our three coasts.

They control marine traffic and respond when mariners are in trouble. It should be clear that any cuts to this service put people’s lives in jeopardy.

One only has to view a recent Fifth Estate documentary on this subject describing lives lost because of inadequate resources dedicated to this service to understand the implications.

I urged readers to heed Alice’s call and write their local MP on this very serious issue.

Pension Reform – a kick in the teeth for the poorest citizens of our country.

The Conservatives under Harper are thinking of making the old age pension not eligible to Canadians until they reach the age of 67. It is interesting that the boys in Ottawa are more than willing to go after the weakest group of Canadians. A lot of elderly people really count on their meager old age pension to help keep them from the worst forms of poverty. Now a group of fat cats in Ottawa whose pensions are astronomical after two or three terms in office are going after the citizens who put them there.

Building war ships? No problem. Buying jets for thirty billion plus? No problem. Taking care of the old?

Seems to be a big problem.

Shame on these bloated MPs. Shame on our Prime Minister. Let us hope they come to their senses and protect the people who built this country. Are they so self-serving that they do not realize the harm they are talking about doing? Or is it they just don’t care?

BC Teachers Federation skips math homework

Teachers in parts of B.C. wore blackon Friday to mark the 10th anniversary of legislation that their union insists “stripped” their “right” to control staffing levels in public schools.

This crucial management tool was abruptly taken back in 2002 by the B.C. Liberal government’s huge majority. Too abruptly, according to a B.C. Supreme Court judge last year.

The court decision stemmed from a landmark Supreme Court of Canada ruling that led to $80 million in compensation for contract-breaking in the B.C. health care support sector at around the same time.

In the B.C. Teachers’ Federation case, the judge gave the provincial government a year to consult and

come up with a replacement to the offending legislation, which will then cease to be in effect. That year is running out, with no more progress being made than the talks to replace the BCTF’s expired union contract.

The pattern of all this is drearily familiar. The B.C. government has already tabled legislation to wrest control of teacher discipline away from the union, after an outside expert found that a convicted drug dealer and a sex offender had managed to get their teaching credentials restored.

After the legislature resumes sitting, conflict-weary parents can expect to hear of new legislation to address the class size and special needs support issue. And there will

likely also be an imposed contract, with the two-year “net zero” wage mandate that has already been accepted by most other government unions.

After months of fruitless meetings, political posturing and work-to-rule action, the BCTF finally tabled a revised contract offer last week, typically by staging a news conference in Vancouver before sharing the offer with the government’s bargaining agent.

It called for wage increases of three, six and six per cent, plus benefit improvements that tinkered with the breathtakingly extravagant demands the union tabled last year.

The BCTF estimated the package would cost a mere $300 million in

the first year. “Show your work,” my math teachers used to tell me, but the BCTF didn’t show its calculations.

Union officials dismissed the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association’s $2 billion cost estimate of the their initial demands as “enormously inflated,” but didn’t show how or by how much.

BCPSEA crunched what numbers the union gave them in the new proposal, and came up with a firstyear cost of nearly $500 million. The BCTF, again to the media rather than at the bargaining table, allowed that its total package would cost $565 million. Again, no calculations were produced.

being compensated under the final terms of a contract that provided 16 per cent in wage increases over five years, in the midst of a harsh recession.

And here’s a fun math fact. With percentage wage increases, three plus six plus six doesn’t

equal 15. It’s closer to 16, because later raises are calculated on a larger base.

So on wages alone, the BCTF wants the same in three years that it just got in five, at a time when private sector unions take layoffs and wage cuts, and

the province is billions in the red.

The president of the Langley Teachers’ Association went on CKNW radio and succinctly summed up the BCTF’s position.

Dragon turned down Thanks, but no thanks, Popove tells investor KRISTEN DOUGLAS

Although entrepreneur Elaine Popove fell short of an acceptable offer on Dragons’ Den, what appeared on TV did not tell the whole story.

Popove and business advisor Shannon Baikie pitched FashionAid, a liquid roll-on adhesive to keep clothing in place.

Popove asked the panel of five Dragons to invest $50,000 for 25 per cent of her company, Miss Fix Fashion Products.

Though her presentation was filmed last May, Popove’s pitch didn’t air on television until last Wednesday night.

Popove, who moved to Campbell River from Shawnigan Lake last year, was surprised to see what CBC aired of

her 45-minute pitch, but acknowledges she did sign up for reality television.

“It’s part of reality TV,” Popove said.

“Going in to this I did sign a contract.”

That six-page contract prohibits Popove from disclosing anything not shown on television.

What viewers did see was Popove turn down veteran Dragon Jim Treliving’s offer of $50,000 for 50 per cent of the company.

Treliving said he had contacts in London Drugs and Rexall, retailers, he said, Fashion-Aid would do well in.

“It was not an easy decision to make,” Popove said. “In the end, the contacts and distribution that Jim offered would have duplicated our efforts since we were already in communication with the proposed stores.”

The Dragons were also a lot more supportive of her business than it appeared – so supportive that Dragon Arlene Dickinson took to Twitter after the

episode aired to set the record straight.

During taping Dickinson sampled Fashion-Aid and said it left a mark on her clothes.

But the night the episode was shown, Dickinson tweeted “For all who have asked – Yes after cleaning it did come out.”

Popove said it’s a relief to have the truth come out.

“I would personally like to thank her for doing that as she didn’t have to,” Popove said.

She maintains that the product is nonstaining and water washable.

“Since it is a liquid adhesive, it may show a wet mark at first and in most cases it dries clear, however, on certain fabrics and darker colours you may see a slight residue similar to what you can expect from deodorant or lotion,” Popove said.

“We want customers to go into the stores and know this is a good product. We have sold over 10,000 units and have not had one complaint or return from any of our retail-

Popove said despite the “negative vibe” going around after the show, Dragons’ Den was a good experience.

“There were a lot of things not shown in the five-minute clip that would have explained the whole story and pitch,” Popove said.

“That being said, we are grateful for the air time we got as many businesses don’t get the chance to have their pitch aired.

“I would like to thank the community for all the support we have received. It’s been an amazing feeling being new to a community and receiving such great support.”

Passed away on his 81st birthday at the Campbell River Hospital with his loving wife and daughter at his side. Jim was born in Aberdeen, Washington, on January 22, 1931, to John and Eunice Kretz. Predeceased by brothers John, Darrell, and sister Janice, Jim is survived by his wife of 47 years, Diana, son John, daughter Constance and sister Willow (Everett) Burts.

Jim came to Canada in the late 1950s to work with his brother Darrell who was logging on Read Island. Previously he had served two years in the US Army and graduated with a degree in music from Washington State University at Pullman (he taught music in Colfax, Washington â&#x20AC;&#x201C; choral and instrument for all grades), but left that behind when he discovered the freedom of living on the BC coast.

In 1962 he worked for Bill Whittingtonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s logging operations on Read Island running the donkey and V8 Cat, and falling timber. He later fell timber at Kelsey Bay for MacMillan Bloedel and during shutdowns would go to other camps on the coast.

In 1964 he married Diana Hudson from Campbell River, almost missing his wedding in Vancouver when a snowstorm threatened to strand him in Bute Inlet where he was working for Lloyd Fair. He and Diana later built their home on Hudsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Farm overlooking Discovery Passage.

Read Island remained a favourite place and after marriage he again worked there, at Evans Bay, this time for Jack Baikie and Harper Graham who had purchased the Whittingtonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s camp. Later, when he and Diana moved to Campbell River, he applied to MacMillan Bloedelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Menzies Bay Division. There, he fell timber and also was one of the leaders of the 1972 fallersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; strike. He remained at Menzies Bay until his retirement in 1991.

Jim spent his free time on the farm clearing Ă&#x20AC;elds, mowing hay, splitting posts, and cutting wood for the annual winter supply until he was 79. He enjoyed choir music for many years as a member of the Campbell River Singers and acted in several musicals at the Tidemark Theatre, including Fiddler on the Roof and Anne of Green Gables.

Many thanks for the compassionate care from our wonderful health community, including home support and home care staff who helped Jim remain at home as long as possible, Geri Arkell and nurses of the Cancer Care Clinic, the nurses and staff of the Campbell River Hospital, especially third-Ă oor north, and doctors Brian Carswell, Willem Prinsloo and Neil Wilcox of Campbell River, and Heidi Martins and Paul Blood in Victoria.

A gathering will be held to celebrate Jimâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life on Sunday, February 19, 2012, from 1pm to 4pm at the home he built for his family.

Adrian (Adrianus) Jeroen Koeleman Jun 11 1947 - Jan 25, 2012

Adrian was confronted with the devastated diagnosis of cancer which ended his life much too soon and in such short time.

He passed away peacefully at home. Adrian was the 7th child born to Adrianus Koeleman and Catharina Koeleman-van den Burg in Noordwijk, the Netherlands.

He left to mourn his daughter Zoe (Shawn) Read and his grandchildren Oliver and Joshua. His siblings Reno (Florence), Cornel (Rob), Pieter (Beja), Jan (Mick), Joost(Piet), Annemiek (Jan). Many nephews and nieces. His ex wife Sandy Spearing, his good friend and caregiver Debbie, friends Jody, Debra, and Nancy. Adrian emigrated to Canada at the age of 16 where he became a heavy duty mechanic. Before he started a family he travelled the world, lived for a year in Australia before he settled on Quadra Island. He built his log home on Quadra Loop. Later he built his home on the cliff looking out over beautiful Hyacinth Bay and Rebecca Spit. He worked mainly for forest companies and since the seventies he had a close connection with the Strathcona Lodge, which he maintained till his retirement in 2008. He joined then the Quadra Fire Department. He was loved by many people on Quadra Island. During his illness he was lovingly cared for by Debbie. We like to thank Dr. Keith Graham, Dr. Erika Kellerhals, Dr. Kerry Baerg, the nurses from the home support team for their care and assistance. There will be no service by request. A Celebration of Life will be held on February 11th at 2:00 pm In the Community Center on Quadra Island.

Prize-winning pianist, Parker is the younger cousin of concert pianists Jon Kimura Parker and Jamie Parker (founder of the Gryphon Trio.)

Ian holds both the Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the Juilliard School, where he was awarded the Sylva Gelber Career Grant, given annually for “the most talented

Canadian artist” by the Canada Council for the Arts.

Ian was First Prize winner at the 2001 CBC National Radio Competition, and has also won the Grand Prize at the Canadian National Music Festival, the Corpus Christ i e I n t e r n at i o n a l Competition and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra Competition.

An enthusiastic recitalist, Ian has performed across the United States, Western Europe, Israel, and throughout Canada.

Bantam A Tyees get hot in time for playoffs

Ice to be shaken not stirred in curling Bond-spiel The Campbell River Curling Club will be hosting the 48th Annual Ralph Boyd Men’s Open Feb. 2-5.

There will be 36 teams competing from all over Vancouver Island. Teams will be guaranteed four games, a banquet Saturday night, and a chance to win some wonderful prizes. There are 19 teams from the Campbell River area while 17 squads will be travelling here from out of town.

Last year’s winner, Rick Dunn’s foursome from Parksville, will be returning to defend his title.

The bonspiel’s theme is Casino Royale, relating to a very popular James Bond movie. There will be a casino night for the curlers on Friday, and entertainment will also follow the banquet on Saturday.

There will be four draws Thursday, seven draws on Friday and Saturday and four draws on Sunday. The major sponsors for the bonspiel are Tyee Chevrolet Buick GMC and Thrifty Foods.

All 144 curlers will have a chance to win a brand new car, retail value of $26,000 from the Tyee Chev dealership, which happens to be a 2011 Cruze LTZ. After their first games, all curlers will throw a draw to the button, and the eight curlers whose rocks end up closest to the button, will advance to the finals and throw for the car, following the Saturday banquet. The eight finalists will receive a curling club jacket, and the first one who completely covers the button during the Draw to the Button finals will win the car.

Also, all 144 curlers will have their names in a reverse draw, with the last three remaining in the draw winning a total of $3,000 in prize value.

The prize table, for the 16 teams who make the prizes, will have a value of $15,000 in total. The finals will begin at 3:15 on Sunday with four event finals taking place.

Drop in to the club any time starting tomorrowy to check out some great curling. There is excellent viewing both upstairs and down. The concession downstairs will be open, and the lounge will be open for refreshments as well upstairs.

The Strathcona Nordics have mapped out excellent courses for both days. On Saturday, Feb. 11, the Coastal Cup #3 will be a mass start, free technique race with distances ranging from 1km to 7.5 km, depending on the age of the racers.

On Sunday, Feb. 12, there is a Team Sprint-style race for

the Coastal Cup #4.

Skiers can register their relay team of two, or they can let the Strathcona Nordics find a teammate for them. The sprint distances will range from 200 metres to 600 metres, according to age category of the racers. For more race details and to register, visit their website StrathconaNordics. com.

Basketball Wolves roar to victory in comeback win The Wolves improved their record (league and exhibition) to 14 wins and three losses, with victories at Pacific Christian School in Victoria and at John Barsby Secondary in Nanaimo last Saturday.

by Sam Phillips and steady play at both ends under the basket, the Wolves managed an impressive comeback and a 79 to 75 victory.

The Barsby game was much different, with the Wolves and Barsby keeping the score close through-

out the first half. The Wolves established a lead in the third quarter, never giving it up, in the 57 to 51 victory.

These games helped move the Wolves from eighth to seventh ranking on the Island as they prepare for the final two league games of the season and the playoffs.

Wolves play Isfeld in league play on the 31st at Isfeld and against, the always tough, Highland, on Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. at home. These games will be important to establish first place seeding in their division for the North Island playoffs Feb. 16-18 at Wellington in Nanaimo.
