It’s of particular significance because it represents over eight decades of business excellence in Campbell River and it honors the volunteer commitment, and business leadership and success, that have laid the foundation for what we value in our business community today. We are a full service flower shop including FTD Wire Services. Also squeezed into the same premises is Campbell River’s new bridal shop DIVA’s Bridal & Prom. We are the only one stop wedding shop on the island! We also provide tuxedo rentals from Western Tux. Pretty flowers and pretty dresses are our business.

Bird of Paradise was started in 1993 making it the second longest-running flower shop in Campbell River. Lori took over the reins in 2007.

We create beautiful floral displays for galas, weddings, funerals, anniversaries or any occassion. We can send wire orders all over the world. We also do custom gift or

gourmet fruit baskets. We can also create silk arrangements. Currently we are growing the event decorating side of our business supplying table coverings and chair ties.

After 13 successful years of providing hearing services in 100 Mile House, Martin and Jana decided to hire a new practitioner and relocate to Campbell River on wonderful Vancouver Island. In January 2010 they opened the Campbell River Hearing Clinic.

For Jana and Martin hearing care is not only a job but a passion. More people suffer from hearing disability than any other ailment such as heart disease, and yet very few understand how it affects people’s lives and relationships.

Serious consequences of hearing loss are withdrawal from conversations, increasing isolation, and possible depression.

A big part of Martin and Jana’s mission is to educate the public about how to identify, understand, and reduce the impact of this invisible disability.

Besides the latest equipment and hearing aid technology, the highest level of care and support is fundamental to successful use of hearing aids.

Once it is established that hearing aids are necessary, Martin and Jana are available as long as needed, training, fine tuning and adjusting until their clients feel entirely comfortable. Building a relationship with their clients are Martin and Jana’s highest priority.

Johnson Locksmiths are the only locally owned and operated full service locksmith store and has a great reputation in Campbell River. SouthEnd farm & vineyards is a boutique winery owned by Ben McGuffie and Jill Ogasawara. Their goal is to make exceptional wines from grapes grown only on Quadra Island as well as the Comox Valley. They live and work at their 4 acre vineyard, raising a family, various animals and a big garden.

When Ben and Jill were starting the winery and vineyard, they wanted to make a wine that really reflected the environment in which they lived so they chose to plant grapes that are adapted to our local climate instead of importing grapes from elsewhere. At their own vineyard they grow 3 whites: Siegerrebe,

Gewurztraminer, and Petit Milo, and 2 reds: Leon Millot and Marechal Foch. There are only 2 other vineyards they buy from; one also located on Quadra Island that grows Ortega, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Agria and Dornfelder as well as a 2 acre vineyard in the Comox Valley.

The tasting room is open on weekends during the summer and always by appointment by calling the winery.

Ben and Jill take great pride in growing and making award winning wines from a tiny little island off the east coast of Vancouver Island.

Their wines are naturally and lovingly made with very little interference. A true taste of Quadra Island.

We supported one individual in particular in this way for several years, giving him all our refundables every few days (and even collecting refundables from our customers for him as well). In the big scheme of things I’m sure this is minor, but it makes a tangible difference in this persons life which we see each day.

The dealership is one of three on Vancouver Island to merit Chrysler’s 5-Star Status for exceptional customer service 8 years in a row.

Howich was the GM at Warren Burd Motors in 1990 when he was given the opportunity to buy the business. It was a 10 year plan, but thanks to strong vehicle sales the purchase was completed in six years. An RV location was added 10 years ago. Island Outboard was purchased seven years ago and amalgamated into Bill Howich Chrysler RV and Marine two years ago.

“We have grown from 18 employees to 64

employees and we’re still expanding,” Howich says. Howich always promotes from within the organization if possible. So it is no surprise that the company currently has five employees who have been on staff for more than 25 years.

At the beginning of this year the Bill Howich Detail Center was opened with two employees to detail vehicles, RVs and marine units and has grown to six employees. “We not only do all our own detailing but we have other dealers subletting vehicles to us to be detailed,” Howich says.

The company’s corporate citizenship is respected citywide. Its charity work includes the Bill Howich/ Salvation Army Golf Classic, the Minor Hockey Association vehicle give away which raised more than $30,000 last year, and the Campbell River Hospital Foundation “price is right” vehicle give away.

Change to a Healthier Lifestyle Steve Nagle became a fitness instructor at the YMCA in Vancouver in 1977. After moving to Campbell River in 1982 he established the extremely successful Sportfit fitness class at C.R. Parks and Recreation Dept. and the class has run twice a week from September to May ever since. 2011 marked the 30th anniversary of the class. Steve attributes the success of the Sportfit class to his unique blend of challenging exercises that can be adapted for all levels and a great sense of fun.

Steve became a weight training instructor in 1990 and subsequently became a personal trainer. Steve is passionate about fitness and health. He has the ability to motivate others to live a healthier lifestyle and improve their quality of life. He believes that personal fitness should not be tied to fancy equipment or limited by facility schedules. Fitness should be simple and adaptable and should fit into everyone’s daily life.

Steve started running in 1974 and has completed several marathons.

In 1997 he took up the sport of triathlon and has now completed five Ironman’s. Besides running and triathlon Steve loves to snowboard, mountain bike, hike and scuba dive. His strong background in outdoor activities gives him the ability and knowledge to train clients in many different sports. He tells his clients “Be prepared to change”, change to a healthier lifestyle, new sport or new goals.

My first dance class began at the age of 5 in Belize Central America, but since then I have trained and taught for many different studios around the world. I have studied several

forms of dance including technical Jazz, Ballet, Hip-hop, Lyrical and Tap. I became a registered BCRPA Group Fitness Instructor in 2006. After teaching many different forms of dance I decided to enter the fitness industry.

As I began to find my passion working with adult women, I decided to take on other dance and fitness forms such as Pole Dancing, Zumba, and Bootcamp. My first real moment when I feel in love with teaching women is a 67 year old woman attended my Pole Dance Class. This woman was so impressed with the feeling of confidence it gave her. Pole Dancing provides women with a sense of confidence and empowerment through an exercise that’s fun and that is why I began The Vertical Gym.

Sandy Poelvoorde is the owner and operator of Boyd’s Funeral Services in Campbell River.

She was raised in Hakai Pass and spent many years working her summers in the pass at a fishing Lodge, and spent her winters trying not to get washed or blown off of Calvert Island.

An accomplished artist with a diploma in Art and Merchandising from Langara College, Sandy has worked on a number of large architectural development projects including the Westin Bayshore expansion and the 2010 Vancouver Olympic bid. As a community activist, Sandy volunteers with many service clubs, including Kiwanis International, Scouts Canada, and the Campbell River Rotary Club. Sandy attended the Canadian

College of Funeral Services and trained as a licensed funeral director and embalmer under an apprenticeship with the ITA. She graduated from the program with honours, and recognizing that there was a need in the North Island for friendly, affordable funeral services; she opened Boyd’s Funeral Services in the Fall of 2010.

We have created partnerships with other charitable organizations, such as Campbell River Cystic Fibrosis; Campbell River Daybreak Rotary; Cameryn’s Cause; River Spirit Dragonboat Team; and Variety Children’s Charity, to name a few. Each year, more than 2000 individuals, businesses and community organizations make contributions and in doing so leave a legacy of health care excellence for future generations.

The Foundation is a registered charity and governed by a volunteer Board of Directors that is made up of community leaders who have a passion and a commitment to supporting access to quality health care.
