This issue of The Good is titled “Good Neighbors” and features many stories of outreach and service. I wanted to take a few minutes to drill down into the concept of being a good neighbor because it is worthy of examination from a number of perspectives. In both the Old and New Testaments, we are entreated to love our neighbors. In fact, in the Book of Matthew, Jesus distills the commandments into what he sees as the two most important: to love God and to love thy neighbor as thyself. In this context, neighbors do not simply mean the people to whom we live next door. It is a broad term for all of humanity – those with whom we share and walk this earth.

We all have a concept of what it means to be a good neighbor – my wife, a native of the South, reliably learns the names of our nearest neighbors within weeks every time we move. Perhaps we think of keeping the noise in our home or yard to a minimum in order to be respectful of those who might be within earshot.

Maybe we check in on an elderly neighbor or help someone bring their groceries into their home. We might go out searching for a lost dog, or we may even provide the proverbial cup of sugar upon request. Being a good neighbor can take so many forms. But what they all have in common is that they involve caring for others, and, when we take a step back and consider that all of humankind is made up of our neighbors, that care can have a wide-reaching effect.

At Campbell Hall, we have been committed to being good neighbors since our founding 80 years ago. Today, our students and family volunteers put their love into action in so many ways. Students host fundraisers to support our sister schools in Haiti, hold bake sales, and organize toy, book, and clothing drives to help those in need. Our VikingCare volunteers reach out to those in our CH community who may be suffering from an illness, injury, or loss of a loved one.

Our public partnership programs extend CH resources to underserved communities. The Outreach Gift Fair, Hillsides Ingathering, and donations of campus-grown produce to MEND (Meet Each Need with Dignity) consistently support organizations that are doing good in the broader community. CH Community Sunday brings together our entire K-12 community to support nonprofits that are making a difference in the lives of others. These are just a few examples of how Campbell Hall finds ways to be good neighbors.

Fred Rogers, the wise and kind television personality who demonstrated how to put love into the world through his program Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood, gave children the remarkable advice to “look for the helpers” during times of trouble.

While this quote may feel a bit hackneyed for its frequent use, I find it a simple and comforting reminder that there are caring people in the world. And when we look for these people, these angels on earth, we tend to find them. They live amongst us, and, I can say this with absolute certainty: we have many of them at Campbell Hall.

In elementary chapel, we often sing “The Magic Penny,” which has the beautiful refrain: “Love is something if you give it away, You end up having more.” Let us all remember that we enrich our own lives and souls when we actively care for others. We never need to be miserly with love because when we put it out into the world, it comes back to us in abundance. When we love our neighbors as ourselves, we are the helpers the world needs. Our Campbell Hall neighborhood is vast indeed.

THE POWER OF STORIES THE IMPACT OF THE CREW PROGRAM Storytelling is an essential part of the human experience.

It can help us relate complex human emotions, connect with others, and make sense of our world. Creative writing is a powerful form of this kind of self-expression and one which, thanks to award-winning author Glen Hirshberg, is thriving at Campbell Hall.

Mr. Hirshberg established the Creative Writing program at Campbell Hall almost 30 years ago and, in 2012-13, rolled out the public partnership program CREW (Creative “Riting” Enrichment Workshop), which he adapted from a similar program he developed for graduate students during a three-year teaching stint at Cal State, San Bernardino. Since its inception, approximately 150 CH high school CREW students have mentored more than 500 elementary students from L.A. and Inglewood public schools.

The first few months of the CREW course are spent training CH students who have taken at least one semester of a CH creative writing course on how to be mentors and then on developing an engaging, age-appropriate curriculum for the mentees. “This is not a tutoring program,” said Mr. Hirshberg. “This is about CH kids teaching something they care deeply about and cultivating that love in someone else.” CH students take ownership of what they teach, adapting a menu of curricular options to their mentees so they will get the most out of the experience.

Every month between December and April, CREW mentors take a bus to visit the I Have A Dream Foundation’s “Dreamer Scholars” at Frank D. Parent Elementary in Inglewood. The I Have a Dream Foundation (IHAD) provides social, emotional, and

academic support to Dreamer Scholars from underresourced communities.

There, CREW mentors work with younger Dreamer Scholars on an individual basis to help them develop creative writing pieces. With the IHAD cohort, for the first time in CREW history, the mentors are working with the same group of students year upon year. This will be the fourth year of working with these kids, strengthening their bonds. This is also an opportunity for mentors to help the Dreamer Scholars develop a more mature writing style and enhance their skills, as the curriculum will include some heightened emphasis on grammar, proofreading, and editing as part of the creative process.

The CREW program is, at its heart, relationship-driven. “I believe that the best way to dissolve boundaries is to work with people on projects that you all love and care about, and in the case of CREW, this results in joyful relationships among kids from various backgrounds,” explained Mr. Hirshberg. As trust in the process and each other grows, and with the encouragement of their mentors, the Dreamer Scholars gain confidence and powerful tools to communicate. “Their stories are validated and, in addition to improving writing skills, they learn to fall in love with language,” Mr. Hirshberg continued. “Our goal with this program is not to produce writers, although we love when that happens, but to nourish the soul with the act of writing.”

Secondary English Department Chair Kathleen Lawton-Trask, who has worked with Mr. Hirshberg in the CREW program since 2019-20, agreed. “We do have students from CREW who have gone on to be practicing writers themselves, but one thing I think is most exciting about CREW is that it has created teachers, and it has given our students the chance to share their creative practice with other kids – letting our creative writing students know how pleasurable it is to have a writing community around them.”

As a public partnership program, CREW represents a different model of community service. “This is not about one party giving something to another,” said Mr. Hirshberg.

“There is an equal exchange in which CH students and Dreamer Scholars both gain immensely from the experience.” The program’s low cost also makes it sustainable, scalable, and able to be translated to other disciplines. “We leverage Campbell Hall’s teaching talent and expertise to train CH students in teaching,” Mr. Hirshberg noted. “The monetary cost of the program mostly boils down to supplies such as notebooks and pens, as well as transportation to the site. And for that, there is a lot of return on investment for all parties.”

The program culminates with a printed publication devoted to the mentees’ work and an informal performance gala where students are invited to share their stories with an audience of parents, teachers, mentors, and fellow Dreamer Scholars. Mr. Hirshberg told the heartwarming story of how, during last year’s performance, one Dreamer Scholar who had barely spoken a word the entirety of the program tugged on the sleeve of her Campbell Hall mentor, indicating she wanted to be the next reader. To the amazement and delight of the attendees, she proudly read her work aloud. It was the first time many in the group had heard her speak. “This program can give kids the confidence to share who they are,” said Mr. Hirshberg.

“Their stories, on every level, are powerful.”

About the same story, Dr. Lawton-Trask noted the effect the quiet student's reading had on one of her mentors.

“The CH student she asked to stand up with her while she read is now a member of our Literary Publications team and started the first meeting of the CREW year telling that story. In our first visit to the school this year, she noticed how much more outgoing the reader had become since last spring…and our CH student helped another CREW member with a different, similarly quiet, student. It’s wonderful to watch our students share what they’re learning about teaching and mentoring with one another.”

The program also has a ripple effect. Many CREW students go on to either become teachers or set up similar experiences at college or in their professional lives, spreading the impact of this work to more communities.

Mr. Hirshberg explained: “The more you teach a subject, the more you love it and the more proficient you become.

The gift and love that CH high school creative writing students share, just through the act of storytelling, reminds us we are not alone. For the mentees, we want to plant seeds of creativity, confidence, and excitement about writing and to cultivate what is already there. We hope this results in these students offering more of themselves to their communities, breaking down even more boundaries.”

ENGINEERING NOISE The IDEA Center’s Inaugural Lunch & Learn

P

President of SpringHill Company and CH parent Devin Johnson (Carys ’27 & Nicholas ’31) met with over a dozen CH high school students on November 29 to share insights into what helped shape his successful business career.

At a young age, Devin decided to pursue a career in accounting as he believed that would provide him with a stable financial future. He earned a finance degree from the University of Michigan, and his professional journey led him to become an auditor at major corporations like Unilever and Pepsi.

While Devin enjoyed some of his job's perks, including the opportunity for extensive global travel, he eventually decided that he wanted a career that matched his broad interests. He shifted into media, and just as the digital age was burgeoning with the growth of the

10 campbell hall magazine I WINTER 2024

internet and the creation of apps, Devin went to work for NBC Universal in New York, taking his career to a new level.

When a great opportunity presented itself, he moved with his family to LA where he was one of the first employees in CH parents LeBron James and Maverick Carter’s company, Uninterrupted, which sought to amplify athletes' voices. Uninterrupted grew into SpringHill Company, where Devin now serves as President. Now, with more than 200 employees, SpringHill continues to showcase the stories behind the people who succeed in their chosen profession through tailored branding solutions.

In the Lunch and Learn session, Devin was asked how to develop an entrepreneurial mindset. “When launching a business, you need to

know what problem you are solving,” he explained. “You have to see the white space.” To illustrate, he pointed to a student’s stainless steel water bottle, stating that products like these were created to solve both the cost and environmental drawbacks of plastic alternatives. “After that, it becomes a game of grit. You have to get comfortable receiving a lot of no’s and, even more importantly, be prepared for that first yes.” Working at a company that was founded by an elite athlete, Devin made the apt comparison of business success with athletic performance. “It’s similar to having the mindset of an athlete,” he continued.

“All of the training you go through to be the best at what you do prepares you for the finish line. Sometimes, that last leg is the hardest, but you have to keep pushing through.”

In answering a question about developing entrepreneurial skills, Devin recommended that young people hone their sales skills. “Business is always about selling - whether it’s a product or an idea,” Devin said. “So getting into that side of the industry first will help you develop marketing strategies to make any product appealing. It will help you in whatever vocation you choose.”

A student wanted to know what steps Devin took to develop his position within the companies he worked for.

Devin explained the theory of PIE (Performance, Image, and Exposure).

“The performance piece is doing well at your job. That is what is expected and is the baseline for success. But you also have to work on how your manager perceives you - that’s the image component. Finally, exposure is making sure people in other departments within the company know you do your

job well. You need all the pieces of the puzzle to help you move up. If you are a great performer, but nobody sees it, then it’s hard to get ahead.”

When Devin, a professed introvert, was working at NBC, his manager shared an anecdote illustrating the importance of image and exposure. At that time, NBC’s parent company, General Electric, sold a dishwasher that was so quiet that customers were unsure of whether it was working when it was switched on. For this reason, there were constant complaints about the product.

The solution was to engineer noise back into the dishwasher so that customers could hear the machine working. “In the same way, it wasn’t enough for me to just quietly do my job,” said Devin. “I had to engineer some noise. My low-key personality didn’t show my manager how hard I worked. So, I needed to be vocal about what I was thinking and show what I was doing. Being a leader

requires getting outside of yourself.

Devin’s career advancements were a direct result of his life experiences, and his inspirational journey underscores the importance of adaptability, resilience, and continuous selfimprovement. Even though he started a career that ultimately wasn’t right for him, he gained a lot of skills that contributed to his personal and professional growth. “Because of my finance background, I can look at a financial statement and understand the business based on that analysis,” said Devin. “That helps me in my present position at SpringHill. There are no wasted experiences. Some of the worst things I have been through have helped me become a better leader today. You have to have the valleys to appreciate the mountains.”

MIDDLE SCHOOL IS IN THE HOUSE! Elevating the MS Student Experience Last year, the middle school rolled out the Ron Clark Academy (RCA) House System, which, much like in the Harry Potter series, sorts each student into one of four Houses. Through this program, students grow connections with peers and teachers, and build school spirit through fun competitions during assemblies and participation in community service and events that earn points for their House. Most importantly, the purpose of the House system is to create an even greater sense of belonging for all students. At the end of the school year, a trophy and special prize are awarded to the House with the most points, and the other three Houses are each rewarded with a fun surprise as well.

This year, a contingent of middle school administrators and teachers took part in a professional development opportunity at RCA in Atlanta, a nonprofit middle school, to learn first-hand from the school that started it all about ways to elevate this vibrant program.

When the CH cohort arrived at RCA, they first noticed the electric atmosphere as students, whose uniforms consisted of t-shirts that matched their House colors, exuberantly greeted them. Middle School Assistant Principal and 7th Grade Science teacher Mini Tharakkal noted: “It was exhilarating to be welcomed so loudly and joyously at eight in the morning!

Students were literally dancing and singing as we walked into the school building.”

Unique features are built into RCA’s system to develop House unity and an overall sense of fun.

For example, students slide down one of two giant slides when they are initiated into their House and when their House is awarded surprise points, students spin a giant wheel to determine their prize. Pono Kahale, Middle School Dean and Human Development teacher, said: “It was exciting to see the pride that each 12 campbell hall magazine I WINTER 2024

student took in their House. They lived and breathed their House identity, in all aspects of their school life, and often outside of school. We hope to build that sense of pride with our CH students.”

There were many helpful takeaways from Campbell Hall’s RCA experience. Goals include building more leadership opportunities by creating student and faculty leads for each House, having more opportunities for parent involvement, integrating the House system into all aspects of middle school life, and developing a more robust House point system.

Some CH middle school House system enhancements have already been implemented this school year. There are more ways for students to earn points for their House through modeling excellence in academics, behavior, service, kindness, and good character. 7th and 8th-grade students grouped in the same House are paired as “siblings,” creating stronger connections between the grades. Advisory groups are now sorted by House so students have even more bonding time. Each House will host an event to celebrate a holiday or tradition.

Parent volunteers have been woven into the program to help plan an off-campus community service event at Ronald McDonald House.

There is also a greater emphasis on community service this year, with Houses competing to earn the most community service hours. This has already resulted in increased participation and so far, over 400 hours of community service have been served in the middle school!

“The trip to RCA was both instructive and rejuvenating,” said Middle School Principal Kasiopia Watts. “We have some wonderful strategies to develop our House program further and strengthen the bonds that tie us together within our larger Campbell Hall family. Our Houses are truly examples of Radical Love.”

Healthy Human Sexuality Education: Being the Primary Source for Children In preparation for the launch of CH K-2 Human Development classes as part of the K-6 Human Development program, the Parent Education program hosted author and human sexuality educator Deborah Roffman who met with interested elementary parents on October 10th and 11th. “Human sexuality is the study of everything in human life that is meaningfully connected to issues of sex, gender, and reproduction,” explained Ms. Roffman. In essence, this touches on almost every aspect of the human experience.

With such a straightforward definition, Ms. Roffman put forth to the gathered audience: “Why are we not leaning into these conversations as we do with so many others? What is it about our culture that prevents us from engaging?” She posited that parents may have feelings of embarrassment around the subject. They may feel that their children are too young to talk to about human sexuality or that openly discussing the topic may be “too much, too soon.”

“Children are, by nature, scientists and very curious,” said Ms. Roffman. Beginning around age four, they have a growing understanding of scientific principles. They have figured out that they were not always here on Earth, prompting the age-old question: “How did I get here?” As children grow, their questions may center on movement through time and space, such as how they were conceived or the process of labor and delivery. Children tend to seek general, scientific knowledge about this topic and Ms. Roffman advocates teaching human sexuality as one would any other subject – in an age-appropriate way with clearly defined limits.

Providing answers to questions in a manner that matches the child’s stage of cognitive development helps nurture children’s healthy development.

“My dream is that one day it will be families in authentic partnership with schools, who are the primary, as in first and most important, resources for young people on this subject,” said Ms. Roffman. “Not only does this make common sense because as parents, you want to get there first, it also makes research sense. Children who are raised in households and schools like Campbell Hall, when this subject is spoken about in cognitively appropriate ways, just like science or any other subject, grow up healthier in statistically significant ways.”

Deborah Roffman is a nationally acclaimed author of four books, including the Elementary School Community Read, “Talk to Me First. Everything You Need to Know to Become Your Kids’ ‘Go-To’ Person About Sex,” and educator with over 30 years of experience.

MINDFULNESS PRACTices + parenting A CH parent of an alum shares how she came to Campbell Hall’s Parent Mindfulness Group and why she is here to stay.

One thing we did not yet have on our list of to-dos was the COVID-19 curveball. On our flight from London to LA in February 2020 to visit Campbell Hall, we met someone who was traveling to Australia via LA because the usual route through Asia was closed. We had no idea then that this would enfold us all, sooner, harder, and longer than we could imagine.

So, here we were, in the fall of 2020, with our UK home sold, all our stuff in a container heading through the Panama Canal, in a city we did not know, in lockdown, with school on Zoom and, it’s fair to say, a significant number of stress triggers.

In a new schooling system so academically and culturally different from the British one, the only way to deal with this scale of change was to find people. And people at Campbell Hall were easy to find. We started navigating this unknown territory with calls to our host family, the President of the Parents’ Association, Educational Support Services, the 11th grade Dean, and other new high school parents.

We moved to LA in August 2020. My sixteen-year-old son, husband, and I arrived in the Campbell Hall community at the odd point of entry of junior year. We are Europeans from Switzerland and Portugal who had lived in the UK for nearly thirty years, making a big mid-life change for us parents and opening up new horizons for our teen. I remember the painful process of getting all the logistics done to set this up, which took about a year. We applied to Campbell Hall as we explored LA schooling options for our son. No good school for him: no move. This was the critical step, and having had a memorable experience visiting the campus, we loved opening the acceptance email from CH very late UK time, one night in early March.

At this point, I was directed to The Parent Mindfulness Group (PMG) as a potential source of friendly voices and community, since we were not going to be on campus any time soon. We were all seeking companionship in figuring out how parenting needed to adjust and evolve in the current times.

The PMG has been active for over thirteen years under the exquisite guidance of Katie DesJardins Bull. It describes itself as a safe, confidential place where parents and caregivers of Campbell Hall students and alumni can connect, share experiences, and engage in mindfulness practice — and that’s exactly how I experience it.

When I joined, the group had only recently pivoted from in-person weekly meetings to Zoom. What became immediately apparent was that everyone on these calls, hosted by our wise guide and facilitator Laurie Cousins, needed acute connection as we all set about processing the impact of COVID-19 on our lives and our children.

Joining these calls helped me to feel less like the odd one out, as this was new to all of us.

As soon as we could, we resumed in-person meetings and shared adventures. In addition to our weekly Zoom sessions, we hold sessions in the Nathanson-Swiger Chapel & Spiritual Center on campus every few months and organize a day-long retreat once a year. There is so much expertise in the group that comes out to play in the form of labyrinth walks, sound baths, restorative movement, and book groups.

The invitation to hold space for each other, slow down, breathe, learn to be present, and give the gift of our questions and experience created strong bonds. What I particularly cherish about this group is that it’s a forum that represents a large slice of the CH community, reminding us that we all share the joy and pains of striving to be the best parents we can be. Ultimately, by holding us parents in a nurturing space, we can learn how to give our children a more balanced version of ourselves.

So, why, more than three years since we landed in LA, and with my son having graduated from Campbell Hall in 2022, do I keep showing up for almost every session and stay involved on the PMG leadership team? Because I love it. Because it’s a space that offers challenge and support, with a chance to be both strong and vulnerable with ourselves and each other.

Our sessions typically look like this: after greeting and introductions, we are guided through a meditation that focuses on a theme relevant to the week. We then find space to respond and discuss, or learn from one of our many guest speakers and experts in the field of contemplative practices. It could seem like an informal check-in, but the space is carefully and expertly orchestrated to guide us into new patterns of behavior grounded in mindfulness, curiosity, and resilience.

There have certainly been a lot of profoundly unsettling world events to hold our attention in the last few years alone. Pain creates potent conversation starters, and we never know where an observation or experience we share might be transformative for someone else.

I offer my sincere gratitude to all of the PMG members as well as the many amazing CH community members who were open to having a chat, a coffee, or a hiking date with the new person at Campbell Hall. You helped me learn to live in LA, and see a better possible version of showing up for family as our authentic selves. And yes, that last one is an eternal work in progress. PMG is a very welcoming place to practice.

Wallace Wei Campbell Hall Chief Financial Officer Wallace Wei grew up in a family of educators in China. His grandmother and mother were elementary school teachers, and his uncle was a college professor.

Education was always a priority for the family, and there was a deep respect for American schools.

Wallace’s grandmother, who, as a single mom, had put all three of her children through top universities, encouraged him to attend an American college.

After receiving his Bachelor of Economics degree from the Shanghai University of International Business and Economics, Wallace started his career at the renowned accounting firm Ernst & Young, where he honed his analytical skills and earned his Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation. He subsequently joined one of his clients, gaining a deep understanding of the due diligence process and equity capital market through assisting with private equity funding and Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) in the U.S. He worked in this field during the global financial crisis that impacted so many businesses worldwide. As capital markets cooled, Wallace remembered his childhood dream of attending an American school and decided that the timing couldn’t be better to attain an advanced degree. He was accepted into Cornell University’s Johnson Graduate School of Management where he earned his MBA. In the second year of his business school, Wallace watched the documentary Waiting for Superman, which chronicles the journey of New York students striving to gain admission to competitive charter schools. This experience inspired him to

merge his finance expertise with his passion for education.

He found an ideal match with Ingenium Schools, a network of charter schools in Los Angeles. During his tenure, he helped grow the institution from two to six schools and increase the student population from 300 to over 2,000 students. Wallace continues to serve as the Board Treasurer at Ingenium, helping to ensure the school’s financial longevity.

After several years at Ingenium, Wallace was approached with an opportunity to become CFO of another prestigious charter school in the Bay Area, where he was enlisted to help restructure the school. Because of the many anti-charter school laws passed in 2018, the school needed to cut costs by 10%. Wallace helped balance the budget, establishing a compliance system from the ground up and building a cash reserve that would protect the capital expenditure needs of the school.

Having worked as a CFO in charter schools for almost ten years, with a lot of time devoted to navigating legal changes to the charter school system, Wallace was interested in moving into the independent school world. He even investigated starting or acquiring one with his uncle.

When Campbell Hall presented him with the opportunity to become CFO, he put his research skills to work and did his own due diligence about CH. “I was so impressed with the beautiful campus, which was so different from many of the institutions I had worked at previously,” said Wallace.

“The school’s mission statement, which rests on the notion of being a community of inquiry, aligns with my own educational philosophy – that true knowledge comes from asking questions.”

The role of Chief Financial Officer is a complex one. Under Wallace’s supervision, the Business Office ensures that payroll for over 200 employees and vendor payouts are met

accurately and on time. Wallace works with Head of School Julian Bull and the Board of Directors to establish and adhere to an annual budget, which is currently $55M. “My primary focus is making sure the school’s money is spent wisely,” Wallace said. “Every decision we make today could have long-term financial implications for the future.”

Wallace’s main goals for Campbell Hall are three-fold. The first is to collaborate with the Advancement Office and the Board of Directors to ensure the funding is in place so the school can break ground on The Holiday Center. The second is to work with Head of School Julian Bull and the Finance Committee to strategize ways to manage the budget well, allocating dollars effectively and efficiently so that the school can maximize the educational experience and outcome for every student. And finally, he aims to develop a comprehensive financial plan to ensure the long-term financial sustainability of the school.

As one of the school’s highest priorities, The Holiday Center is a central focus for Wallace. Beyond the initial investment in the construction of the project, one of Wallace’s key roles is ensuring that the school’s long-term budget, which was built out for the next ten years using projections and financial modeling, accounts for the ongoing costs associated with the new facility and campus. He relies on Campbell Hall’s leadership as partners in the decision-making process.

“I get a lot of support from the Board and Finance Committee members with additional support from Board Co-Chair Ed Han and Board Treasurer and Finance Committee Chair Todd James,” said Wallace. “They are deeply involved in the capital campaign as well as decisions about the school’s planning for long-term projects. All of these pieces are interconnected.”

Wallace is deeply grateful for the Campbell Hall community.

He relies on the resourceful and committed members of the Board of Directors, parents who lend their industry expertise and insights, and his collaborative colleagues in the Business, Advancement, and Operations/Facilities Offices to help guide decision-making. Under the leadership of Wallace, Campbell Hall’s financial Viking ship is being steered responsibly, allowing the school to navigate any waters.

On a personal note, Wallace has a lot of hobbies! He enjoys reading history, as well as novels by John Grisham and books

by Malcolm Gladwell. He is a philatelist and has a collection of over 3,000 map stamps from more than 200 countries, some of which are “dead” (no longer in existence). The oldest stamp in his map stamp collection is from Canada, dating back to 1898. It is recognized as the first Christmas stamp and features a world map, highlighting the then-British Empire.

Wallace also loves hiking and exploring national parks with his family.

This tradition started years ago when the Service was held in the Lynn & David Angel Reading Room.

This special time together provides participants with an opportunity to listen to passages from the Bible, pray for the needs of others and themselves, and center themselves for the day ahead. Everyone is welcome to attend!

Lifting Up Every CH Student Intercessory Prayer On Monday mornings at 7:30 am, interested faculty and staff gather on Zoom to pray in rotation for the students of Campbell Hall. We call this religious practice “Intercessory Prayer,” which is defined as “praying on behalf of others.” CH music teachers Jim and Julie Whiting began this beautiful tradition at Campbell Hall over a decade ago.

The Eucharist is at the heart of the Christian faith, symbolizing the Last Supper when Jesus broke bread and drank wine with his closest disciples. It was on this occasion, the night before he died, that he told his followers that they must always remember the lessons he taught them and honor the sacrifice he was going to make for them by living according to his ways.

During this time, we pray for several students from each grade and, by the end of the year, every student has received our collective prayers. An example prayer may be: “We pray this morning for the third grade class.

We give thanks for their OGF presentation about the importance of the Food Pantry. We also hold in prayer John Doe and Jane Doe. May their week be filled with new learnings, and may their eyes see the wonder and beauty of the world.”

Third Grade Service Learning Trip to the North Hollywood Interfaith Food Pantry Each year, the third grade not only supports the North Hollywood Interfaith Food Pantry (NHIFP) by raising funds during the Outreach Gift Fair, but they also embark on a service learning trip to volunteer at the pantry. The class walks to the distribution center, located just a few blocks away on Moorpark and Colfax, where they spend a few hours engaging in hands-on experiences that help them connect their fundraising efforts with the real-life impact they have on our broader community.

During their visit, the students were divided into three groups, rotating through a series of activities that included assembling hygiene kits, touring the pantry, and making cards of encouragement for the clients. Third grade teacher Tamara Dillon noted, “In the classroom, we have really meaningful discussions, but to actually go and prepare the hygiene kits and be thoughtful about the cards they are writing, makes it all much more real.”

The nonprofit pantry distributes more than 1,600 bags of food each month.

Director of NHIFP Barbara Javitz explained to the students, “Most of our clients are working people.” With the rising cost of food and other inflationary pressures since the pandemic, the need for food distribution sites has grown tremendously. NHIFP helps meet the needs of people in our community who are experiencing food insecurity.

“Campbell Hall is a community filled with people who want to do good and help others,” said third grade teacher Malerie Leff. “The third grade trip to the pantry has a lasting impact on the students and brings a lot of awareness about how they can give back.” Mrs. Dillon echoed that sentiment, stating, “We are very blessed, and we love to find places where our students can be of help, which we hope continues on in their lives.” One third-grade student shared, “It makes me feel like I am doing something good.”

After a joyful day of service, the students gathered outside NHIFP and gave a collective shout of, “Good happens here!”

MAKING CONNECTIONS THROUGH ART Through the City of LA’s Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) and in conjunction with Interact Theatre Company, CH K-12 Performing Arts Department Director Megan Zakarian Adell co-produced a free four-week performing arts program this past summer. The program, known as InterPlay, was held at the Lankershim Arts Center in the NoHo Arts District and offered creative instruction in theatre, singing, improv, dance, design, and film for students aged 7-17 from underresourced communities.

InterPlay’s 2023 theme of “Connected” could not have been more apt. Ms. Adell hired CH alumni, along with guest teaching artists, who worked closely with the students to help them gain valuable performance skills and develop their talents, building strong relationships with participants and colleagues. Remi Moses ’11, who is currently working on her Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with a Drama Therapy Specialization, served

as the lead teacher and, with her assistants Jess McPherson ’22, Toby Lim ’22, and Mia Phillips ’22, taught a range of performing arts classes, including acting, storytelling, special effects makeup, and stage combat. CH secondary music teacher Jason Goldstein ’12 was a guest music teacher and accompanist.

Ms. Adell was impressed with how members of the team worked seamlessly together to build an environment in which every student could shine. “Theater arts are inherently collaborative. We learn to trust and rely on each other in these immersive experiences,” she noted. “Remi was adept at utilizing her Drama Therapy skills to create a safe space for every student, giving them the freedom to explore and express their emotions.

Jess, Toby, and Mia put their CH Theater training to work to help the students feel cared for and supported as they gave them the confidence to flourish creatively. And Jason’s music arrangements of the songs elevated the quality of the performances.”

Remi added: “It was beautiful to watch the campers form deep connections with one another and learn to trust their own creative instincts.

The group started off as shy, unsure kids and ended as confident artistic collaborators. By the end of the camp, students had made long-lasting friendships and were writing their own plays and films with one another. Some even had plans to perform them in front of friends and family. Nothing makes me happier than watching students become creatively confident!”

The program culminated with a showcase during which the stories the students developed were brought to life onstage. The production also consisted of several student-produced short films, dances, and songs. “My favorite moment was watching the sense of pride these students had in performing their own creative scenes to the audience made up of overjoyed parents, professional actors from Interact Theatre Company, LA county representatives, and friends of the teachers and staff,” said Ms. Adell.

“We hope to be given the DCA grant again so that we can offer this special program to kids who need it the most.

There is nothing more fulfilling than seeing these talented students get the opportunity to experience the magic of theater, all while having fun and making connections with each other and teachers! And being able to add the expertise of CH alumni and faculty to the program makes these connections even more meaningful.”

Hillsides Ingatherings

Spreading the Warmth

On December 4, elementary, middle, and high school students gathered in their respective chapels to drop off unwrapped gifts for the annual Hillsides Ingathering. This tradition, which began in the 1980s, brings holiday cheer to children served

by Hillsides, a nonprofit organization in Pasadena dedicated to improving the well-being of vulnerable children, youth, and their families.

Hillsides’ CEO Stacey Roth spoke at each chapel, explaining to the students the importance of their generosity in the lives of the children, not only for the joy the gifts bring but also as a reminder that people care about them.

Organized by Jackson K. ’26 and Mila G. ’26 with help from the Outreach Committee and The Rev. Joseph Courtney, Campbell Hall hosted a coat collection on campus during the week following Thanksgiving break as part of the One Warm Coat national campaign to promote coat drives. A total of 77 coats were collected and donated to LA On Cloud 9, a local nonprofit that provides meals and basic necessities to unhoused men, women, and children in Los Angeles.

The coats were distributed to those in need, along with delicious meals!

Jackson said: “We wanted to do a coat drive at CH to help the homeless population as the weather was getting cold. One Warm Coat is a great organization to help with coat drives with a mission to share the warmth.

We are working with LA on Cloud 9 to deliver coats along with warm meals to people who need our help the most on the street. We are grateful our community was willing to donate so many coats to help!”

OUTREACH GIFT FAIR

HOLIDAY GIFTING WITH PURPOSE For many, the nearing of the holiday season at Campbell Hall is marked when festive decorations, carefully installed by dedicated parent volunteers, transform the campus into a winter wonderland. For elementary students, teachers, and families, though, an earlier event first heralds the arriving holidays: Campbell Hall’s Outreach Gift Fair.

Affectionately referred to as OGF, this annual program was started in the winter of 1990 by longtime elementary school art teacher Kathy Allison (now retired, after 42 years of service). The fair, which now runs from early November through early December, encourages students and their families to prioritize charitable giving during the holiday season and serves as an extended service learning activity in elementary.

In addition to engaging in various outreach opportunities at school, students are encouraged to take ownership of the good they are doing by earning their own contributions toward their class donation. While students often return to tried-and-true favorites like pet sitting or dishwashing, they are also finding great success through newer ventures like neighborhood art sales. Whatever the activity, students learn to think meaningfully about specific ways they can make others’ lives better.

Led by elementary, the Outreach Gift Fair is an opportunity for the entire Campbell Hall community to join together in making gifts of significance to those in need. The love for this holiday tradition, which has raised more than $20,000 annually since 2020, was on clear display again this season, with students and families contributing $21,625!

The kindergarten through fourth-grade classes are paired with charitable organizations with which the school has longstanding relationships, while fifth and sixth-grade students Read on to learn about the inspiring organizations, both near vote on the charity they’d like to support. BABY2BABY Starting with baby steps, kindergarteners began their OGF with Baby2Baby. To hear about the impact of their fundraising, the kindergarten classes welcomed alum Emily Grossman ’11, Director, Volunteer & Community Engagement for Baby2Baby, who shared how they provide basic necessities to children living in poverty. Students deepened their connection to the cause by creating handmade cards for the baby packs the organization distributes.

1ST GRADE

THE SEEING EYE Students in first grade raised funds for The Seeing Eye, an organization that

breeds and trains puppies to become Seeing Eye dogs. First-grade students presented their selected nonprofit by reading stories from people who have been aided by guide dogs, and invited the community to donate to training puppies so more individuals with vision loss can gain independence and enhance their lives.

2ND GRADE

TREE PEOPLE Supporting a cause close to home, second graders fundraised for TreePeople. During a field trip to the organization’s local Coldwater Canyon Park students learned how to care for trees and conserve water. To illustrate the importance of caring for the environment, and to present their nonprofit to the community, second

graders made colorful tree cutouts and read The Lorax by Dr. Seuss in chapel.

3RD GRADE

NORTH HOLLYWOOD INTERFAITH FOOD PANTRY Third-grade students supported the North Hollywood Interfaith Food Pantry with both time and treasure. In addition to raising funds for the pantry, third graders walked to the nearby distribution center to engage in a variety of hands-on service learning experiences. Read “Good Happens Here!” on page 19 for a closer look at this meaningful field trip.

4TH GRADE

NAVAJO WATER PROJECT Connecting their OGF project to Native American Heritage Month in November, fourth graders supported the Indigenous-led organization Navajo Water Project. After learning about how the engineering design process can be applied to improving water access to people in the United States, students raised funds to help bring the simple miracle of a working tap with clean water to families of the Navajo Nation.

5TH GRADE

DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS Following thoughtful class discussions, fifth-grade students decided to focus on providing emergency medical support

for as many people in as many places as possible. With this in mind, they chose to support Doctors Without Borders, which has been providing humanitarian assistance to people in need and fighting injustice around the world for more than 50 years.

6TH GRADE

WATER FOR SOUTH SUDAN Sixth-grade students began their OGF project by learning about the history and culture of South Sudan. After hearing the moving stories of Salva Dut, Founder of Water for South Sudan, sixth graders chose to join his mission of providing clean water to villages by building wells and teaching sanitation and hygiene practices. Their contributions will support grassroots, community-led efforts to empower villagers to build and maintain the wells.

ADDITIONAL ORGANIZATIONS In addition to the grade-specific nonprofits, OGF invites families to support the following organizations with which Campbell Hall has had long-standing partnerships: Hillsides, Hands 4 Haiti, School On Wheels, The Rocket Fund, and Episcopal Relief and Development.

TIME IS ON HER SIDE

Cameron Coffman, CH secondary visual arts teacher, was awarded a Fellowship Residency at the Franconia Sculpture Park in Shafer, Minnesota, where she created two large-scale sundial sculptures for exhibition in their 50-acre outdoor museum. The park, which receives over 200,000 visitors annually, will feature her work for the next two years. Ms. Coffman was selected to participate in the Fellowship through a competitive, multi-staged review panel led by arts professionals from around the country.

Tell us how you became interested in participating in a residency program at the Franconia Sculpture Park. What was the selection process like? Is this your first residency and/or your first outdoor exhibition?

Artist residencies can vary in length, funding, focus, and financial support from just a few weeks to several months.

I’ve attended residencies in a wide range of places, including Europe and various parts of the U.S. Location often plays a significant role in the experience I derive from the residency.

Franconia Sculpture Park offered financial support by providing free lodging, studio space, and a materials stipend, which allowed me to focus solely on the work.

I first submitted my proposal in an open call from the park in August 2022. I received my acceptance letter in January 2023 and left for the park in August 2023. Franconia Sculpture Park in Schafer, MN, is a unique residency in that it provides funding to artists who may have never created outdoor work before. I have been making sundials since COVID first started, but this was the first time a piece was going to be contracted to live outside publicly for two years. Hopefully, it survives the Minnesota winters!

What is the importance of time in your work? How did you create the sculptures?

The history of sundials spans millennia. Sundials are used by cultures all over the world. They connect us mathematically, historically, and astronomically. They’re connected to the motion of the earth and sky. Traditionally, sundials are engraved with proverbs and mottos that invite passersby to reflect on the passing of time, the brevity of life, or humorous anecdotes.

Solar time is a fundamental way of understanding our world and environment. After years of on and off quarantine and keeping afloat in a pandemic, I was looking for a transformative way to reconnect with the world. During the pandemic, the passage of hours, days, and months warped my understanding of how we engage with our communities.

The initial human endeavor to mark the passage of hours is intrinsically ingrained into us and marks significant moments in our lives.

In my sundials, I collaborate with other artists and writers and turn to archives and entomologists when generating images for the surfaces. These surfaces are meant to reflect the landscape and people of the community. The layering of these illustrations, texts, and images fades and emerges depending on the angle at which the viewer stands and how

much light is hitting the surface at any given moment.

This effect allows the viewer to find something familiar, as well as something new as it relates specifically to the landscape and community of Franconia.

The sundials are foam covered in fiberglass with a PVC pole through the middle. The foam was designed in Blender (a free online 3D modeling software) and then converted into vectors for CNC printing. This is how the circle and Roman numerals were cut perfectly.

Tell us about your experience living and working in the park. What were some of the challenges you faced? What are some of the memories you will always hold close? How did the terrain of the park impact your work?

Building a large sundial was a transformative experience that reshaped my relationship with and comprehension of my previous pieces. With generous assistance in terms of time, financial resources, tools, and the physical space to tackle the most substantial project I've ever undertaken, I was able to bring to life a long-held dream of mine that would have otherwise remained unattainable.

I encountered numerous challenges, resulting in a growing sense of problem-solving fatigue. I often dedicated entire days to a task, only to realize it was the wrong approach. Subsequently, I would spend the following day undoing my previous work and, the day after that, attempting a different strategy in the hopes of achieving success. I’m still nervous if the piece will survive a Minnesota winter. They advised that the temperature difference can range between -50F to 105F degrees.

spaces, taking into account various weather conditions, durability, and labor. I learned that I thrive in solitude and have been struggling to bring that back into my work days.

Now that I'm back in my Los Angeles studio, I find that my sense of scale has become distorted, and everything I create seems too small.

ARTWORK STATEMENT

I call them my delicates. Those non-domesticated creatures whose lives intersect most intimately with our own: spiders in the shower, ants at the picnic table, hornets in the corner of the porch. As a society, we are beginning to see the first indicators of our deteriorating ecosystem. Time has revealed the catastrophe of eroding landscapes to contemporary human culture and our society. Insects are the vital pollinators and recyclers of ecosystems, the foundation of the food web everywhere. If the whole insect world went missing, that loss of abundance could alter us irreparably.

“Always time for friends” interrogates how one’s relationship to time, insects, health, and nature corresponds with the love and loss of the day-to-day.

This sundial is a composite of images, texts, and miniature adornments, highlighting flora and fauna sourced from The University of Minnesota regional archives. Time and imagery are intrinsically linked.

This evolution is slow, but the mutualism of humans and fauna is imperative. By choosing insects and plants native to the location, I hope for the viewer to acknowledge the passing of time and what is present.

The Wellness Day is about looking inward and incorporating mindfulness techniques to help maintain balance and find calm in their hectic lives. And the experiential education component lets students engage with nature and each other. It’s an amazing way for ninth graders to launch their high school experience.”

Each new challenge was accompanied by encouragement from classmates and faculty chaperones, boosting confidence and building resilience. Christopher Dennis Honored with Axis’ Reveta Bowers Legacy Award for Outstanding DEIJ Contributions to Education

Christopher Dennis, Associate Head of Community Engagement, received the esteemed Reveta Bowers Legacy Award in recognition of his unwavering commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for students.

The Reveta Bowers Legacy Award celebrates individuals who have shown exceptional dedication to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion within education. Christopher’s extensive work in DEIJ is a shining example of the transformative power of passionate advocacy and support.

This recognition was presented to Christopher at the Private School Axis’ annual Glow-Up Gala this past October. Axis is a nonprofit organization that partners with Los Angeles independent schools to create pathways for underrepresented students and families of color to access, navigate, and thrive in private education.

A Cross-Cultural Exchange

Visiting French Students Become Honorary Vikings On October 28, 15 students and two teachers from Notre Dame du Roc in La Roche-sur-Yon, France, arrived in Los Angeles and were warmly greeted by their Campbell Hall host families for a two-week exchange visit. Prior to the trip, the students connected through social media, generating even more excitement for their in-person meeting.

During their stay, the exchange students shadowed their host students for four days at Campbell Hall and attended additional classes based on their interests, getting first-hand experience of what it’s like to be a Viking. Beyond the school setting, the group spent four days visiting cultural sites like the Getty, exploring iconic locales like Santa Monica and Downtown LA, and enjoying attractions like Universal Studios.

Campbell Hall families, true to form, were the ultimate hosts, providing their visiting students with a variety of experiences that immersed them in LA culture and made them feel part of the 30 campbell hall magazine I WINTER 2024

family. Some enjoyed day trips to Venice, Malibu, the Aquarium of the Pacific, or the La Brea Tar Pits.

Some hiked well-loved trails including Runyon Canyon, the Angeles National Forest, and the Wisdom Tree. Some experienced rock climbing, karaoke, or surfing lessons. Some were treated to concerts at the Santa Barbara Bowl or Hollywood Bowl. Some cheered teams at a Lakers-Clippers, UCLA, or Ducks game. Some attended Campbell Hall events like the CH girls’ volleyball games, play rehearsals, or preparations for opening night with the theatre tech crew. Some of our guests were also treated to a tour of the elementary school by fourth grader Isabella G. ’32, including an impromptu serenade by a fourth-grade music class. Others had unique experiences like enjoying a Warner Bros. studio tour or even attending a wedding! And because the trip coincided with Halloween, there were lots of spooky adventures like Halloween Horror Nights, the “Carved” event at Descanso, Dia de los Muertos at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, and even our own elementary Halloween parade! Many of the French students

A group of Campbell Hall students will travel to France over the upcoming spring break. They will stay with the families of the students who visited Los Angeles in the fall, engaging in a similarly immersive experience. The itinerary includes two days exploring Paris and attending five days of classes with their host students, further strengthening the bonds that were created during this memorable cultural and educational exchange.

Beyond the remarkable adventures experienced by students and families alike, this exchange is an opportunity to deepen cross-cultural understanding and forge strong bonds of

GRANDPARENTS Middle School Grandparents’ and Grandfriends’ Day On November 17, middle school grandparents and grandfriends were welcomed onto campus and were celebrated with a full program. They heard from several special speakers including middle school student council co-presidents Zoe D. ’28 and Lucas T. ’28.

Guests were entertained with fantastic performances from the orchestra, choir, world drumming, and jazz groups. After the program, students joined their grandparents and grandfriends in the Garver Gym where they gifted their special guests with “radical love” pins while they chatted and caught up with one another.

Together, they engaged in meaningful writing activities, exchanging notes of love with each other and sending letters of appreciation to first-responders and children who had received a free pair of shoes through a student-led collection, before enjoying a delightful lunch. Their visit concluded following a personalized campus tour expertly guided by their students. We are certain guests and their students created cherished memories that will last a lifetime.

CAMPBELL HALL’S Inaugural Poker Tournament Ante up! On November 16, CH Gospel Choir founder Patrice Grace, her husband, John Grace, CH Black Heritage Families, and the Black Alumni Collective hosted the inaugural poker tournament in the Lower Gym. More than 100 parents, grandparents, and alumni anted up to have fun while competing for exciting prizes.

More than $15,000 was raised in support of the CH Black Alumni Collective Endowment Fund, which assists Black students with non-tuition auxiliary expenses related to their Campbell Hall education.

Viking Robotics Congratulations to William H. ’24 and Miles S. ’25 for winning the PASVEX Signature Event 2023 for robotics in Taiwan. They came back from 32nd at the end of qualification matches to become Tournament Champions! Given their win at an international event, they will compete at the World Championship (Dallas, TX) in April. This is a first for Campbell Hall in the VEX Robotics program. In addition to being Tournament Champions, the team was awarded the Create Award.

In October, the Viking Robotics team brought home Campbell Hall’s first VEX competition robotics award: The Build Award. The Build Award recognizes a robot that is well-constructed with a high degree of attention to detail in order to hold up to the rigors of competition. The team received its second Build Award of the season at a competition in December!

American Mathematics Competition The annual American Mathematics Competition (AMC) is aimed at igniting students’ interest in mathematics and challenging them to solve complex math problems. The contest, which takes place in over 4,000 schools across the country, was held after school on Tuesday, November 14. This year, 11 CH high school students, whose passion for mathematics includes advanced algebra, geometry, number theory, and combinatorics, participated not only for the challenge and the fun but also to strengthen their understanding of mathematics and delve into problem-solving.

We thank all the students who participated in this friendly competition.

Planting Seeds for the Future: An Eco Collaboration On October 2, CHAI Environmental Science high school students worked with 4th-grade students in the elementary gardens to plant, weed, and cultivate produce. This cross-divisional collaboration allows older students to share their knowledge and passion for environmental care with younger students, who, in turn, develop an appreciation for nature. The harvested produce from the garden is donated to MEND (Meet Each Need with Dignity), a local nonprofit organization committed to providing essential support to vulnerable individuals and families in the community.

CROWNING GLORY: THE PIPER RECEIVES NATIONAL AWARD

The Piper has been awarded its sixth Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) Crown Award for their 2022-2023 publication.

The Crown Awards are the most selective and highest recognition given by the CSP and honors top student publications in the nation.

Middle School Speech and Debate Success The Campbell Hall Middle School Speech & Debate team started off their season on November 11 at the Oakwood Autumnal Tournament. The students researched and prepared arguments for the topics “AI is a threat to humanity” and “private prisons do more harm than good.”

Eighth graders Lou S. ’28 and Rae B. ’28 took top speaker awards with Campbell Hall taking third place with school percentage wins. The Middle School Debate team is looking forward to their next big tournament in late winter!

mi mami’s revolution A Visit from Prisca Dorcas Mojica Rodríguez Prisca Dorcas Mojica Rodríguez is a leading Latinx activist, writer, and speaker. She founded Latina Rebels, a platform with over 350,000 followers, and has been featured on NPR and in New York Magazine’s The Cut, Teen Vogue, and Cosmopolitan. This past October, Prisca spent a day at Campbell Hall, speaking at the high school chapel, meeting and mingling with members of Latinos Unidos, attending a faculty/staff mixer, and, in the evening, presenting a Community Book Talk on her book For Brown Girls with Sharp Edges and Tender Hearts.

During the Community Book Talk, Prisca shared that when she was seven, she and her family immigrated to the U.S. from Nicaragua, the second-poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. They settled in Miami, where they found comfort in the cultural familiarity of the predominantly Latinx city.

Growing up, Prisca attended HispanicServing Institutions (HSIs), where she excelled academically. It wasn’t until she got to graduate school, where she was working on her master of divinity, that she realized how vastly different the viewpoints and perspectives on her education were. Prisca was shocked when she was given a “D” on her first paper, a grade she had never received. She described the paper as “bleeding red” with the professor’s corrections and notes crisscrossing the pages. The teaching assistant, fluent in Spanish, recommended that going forward, Prisca write her papers

in Spanish and offered to be the one that graded them. Prisca was taken aback. She had only ever written academic papers in English. Wanting to tackle this problem, she contacted the writing center. When she arrived for her appointment, she was shocked to learn that her appointment had been canceled because, based on the paper Prisca had submitted in advance, the center determined she needed help from the English as a Second Language (ESL) writing lab.

“Your status will not be elevated because of the institution you are in, but the spaces Prisca was confused. As a proficient speaker, she was not sure why are better because English she was being asked to write her paper in Spanish or to visit the ESL writing you are in them.” lab. Again, she made the requisite appointment. When she arrived at the ESL writing center, which was situated quite a distance from the heart of campus, her appointment was once again canceled. This time, the explanation was that the understaffed center was unable to provide help to someone they deemed fluent in English.

After so much back and forth, Prisca finally discovered that because she would sometimes place an adjective after the noun in her writing, as is done in Spanish, the predominantly white institution she was attending felt her writing skills were lacking. In Prisca’s experience at HSIs, this had never been a problem because her teachers understood it was a simple mixup that did not hinder the clarity of her communication. Furthermore, unaware that Chicago-style citations

were preferred in graduate school, Prisca’s use of MLA citations led the teaching staff to deem her work academically deficient.

This experience, like so many others she went on to have in grad school, illustrated how difficult it can be to find a place in institutions that, as Prisca says “were not built to include you.”

There can be vast cultural divides that keep systems of oppression in place. While she began to fight against racism and classism where she found it, she also began to recognize that she was simultaneously undervaluing her own background and even her family. As the first in her family to graduate from college and the first to receive a master’s degree, she would sometimes see herself as more special than women who did not have similar educational backgrounds, and, according to Prisca, the institution she attended reinforced that.

In what she calls “mi mami’s revolution,” her mom helped her lift “the veil of superiority.”

Prisca developed a new appreciation and respect for where she came from and her

family who made it possible to be in the institutions she was a part of. She began to value her mom’s strength and recognize that her “mami is a fountain of knowledge.”

Prisca notes about her mom: “I’m proud that she has always fought. Even when she doesn’t win, even when decisions were made without her input…She has never succumbed to making herself invisible, and I have seen that resistance. And I sample from that resistance all the time…I can never forget that it’s mi mami that I have to thank for my possibilities.”

Among the practical advice and illustrative anecdotes on challenging systems of oppression, there was also a sense of purpose in creating a space in which the attendees of Prisca’s book talk could identify with her struggles in forcing necessary change.

Prisca’s calling is to empower women of color to embrace who they are and encourage them to join together to support one another in this important work. She reminded the attendees: “Your status will not be elevated because of the institution you are in, but the spaces are better because you are in them.”

The Holiday Center

The Ressler and Holiday families together have made a gift to Campbell Hall’s CH NEXT capital campaign for the construction of The Holiday Center, named in honor of a Campbell Hall family whose contributions to the community have spanned nearly 25 years. This 55,000 sq. ft. facility will enhance learning opportunities for students and bring athletics, fitness, and wellness to the next level.

Athletics have always been central to the Holiday family.

Toya Holiday met her husband, Shawn, at Arizona State University, where they played basketball for the Sun Devils. Toya was named Pac-10 Player of the Year in 1982.

Shawn later transferred to Cal State Los Angeles, playing for the Golden Eagles, where he led the club in steals. Toya began teaching and coaching at Campbell Hall in 1999 and is now the Elementary School Athletic Director and CoDirector of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice K-12.

Toya and Shawn’s four children attended Campbell Hall, all of whom were star athletes with careers spanning from 2004 to 2015. Justin ’07, Jrue ’08, and Aaron ’15 led the Varsity Boys’ Basketball team to countless victories, including three CIF, three regional, and three state championships. Justin ’07 went on to play at the collegiate level for the Washington Huskies. Since then, he has played for several NBA teams and now plays professionally for the Denver Nuggets.

Jrue ’08 was named Gatorade National Player of the Year in his senior year of high school. He played college basketball for the UCLA Bruins before being drafted by the

Philadelphia 76ers, where he was named NBA All-Star in his fourth season. He went on to play for the New Orleans Pelicans and the Milwaukee Bucks. He is now a point guard for the Boston Celtics.

As a CH Viking, Lauren ’12 excelled in basketball, volleyball, softball, and track and field. She helped lead the Varsity Girls’ Basketball team to the 2012 CIF Division 4A championship for the first time in school history and was named 2012 Player of the Year in Division 4A. With the Varsity Girls’ Volleyball team, she earned first-team All-Alpha League honors in 2010 and second-team All-Alpha League in 2012. Lauren went on to play basketball for the UCLA Bruins. She is now a valuable member of the CH faculty, teaching Middle School Human Development and coaching girls’ volleyball.

Aaron ’15 was a four-year starter at CH and ranked among the top players nationally. He went on to play at the collegiate level for the UCLA Bruins, where he earned All-American recognition and first-team all-conference and all-defensive honors in the Pac-12. He has played for several NBA teams, including the Indiana Pacers, Washington Wizards, and Atlanta Hawks. He now plays for the Houston Rockets.

With a commitment to elevating the athletic, wellness, and educational experience for every student, the Holiday family, in conjunction with the Ressler family (Oliver ’10, Nick ’13, and Theo ’17), are helping transform the campus and making The Holiday Center a reality.

Game, Set, Match.

The Viking Tennis Center Celebration On October 25, parents, alumni, studentathletes, faculty, and staff gathered to ceremonially “cut the ribbon” on The Viking Tennis Center, a new on-campus facility with five lighted championship courts.

Viking Tennis, the winningest program in the school’s history, now has a fitting new facility. Head Tennis Coach Steve Kuechel put it best when he said, “We’re home.”

Remarks were also shared by Head of School Julian Bull and CH Board Member Ted Burnett who, along with his wife Denise, have named one of the five courts. Guests had a chance to try out the new courts with a fun rally against CH Varsity Girls’ Tennis players.

DID YOU KNOW? Many of us are used to seeing professional tennis courts in certain colors: the green grass of Wimbledon, the red clay of the French Open, or the blue courts of the U.S. Open. So why are the five new championship Viking Tennis Center courts purple? The main reason that Campbell Hall chose this color as the surface is simple: visibility. Because purple is directly opposite yellow on the color wheel, the purple surface of the courts offers more contrast to the fluorescent yellow tennis ball and helps players and spectators follow the trajectory of the ball better. This lessens eye strain for the players and helps focus their attention on the ball.

It also allows spectators to follow play more easily. In addition, the courts are aesthetically pleasing! Go Vikings!

YOUNG ALUM REFLECTIONS Q&A with Juliette Schirn ’21 VA N D E R B I LT U N I V E R S I T Y What has surprised you the most about college?

In college, I have encountered a diverse range of individuals. Each person unveils distinct interests, passions, and a plethora of high school experiences. Whether it’s delving into the allure of Skyline Chili or witnessing the genuine adoration for Buc-ee’s gas stations, exploring these experiences beyond the confines of Los Angeles has been fascinating.

How did Campbell Hall prepare you for the social and emotional aspects of college, including building relationships, time management, and handling stress?

Campbell Hall established a strong basis for navigating college’s social and emotional landscape. The school’s focus on community engagement, diverse interactions, and collaborative projects was pivotal in honing my relationship-building abilities. Participating in group activities and discussions cultivated a sense of camaraderie and underscored the importance of teamwork.

Particularly influential was Campbell Hall’s emphasis on fostering connections with teachers, a practice I’ve continued in college. At Vanderbilt, building relationships with my professors has opened doors to a multitude of life and learning opportunities. The rapport I’ve established with my educators has been instrumental in broadening my academic horizons and gaining valuable insights.

What advice do you have for high school students in terms of preparing for college academically and personally?

As you embark on the college application journey, shift your focus from what you think you should do to what truly inspires you. Despite the initial daunting appearance, this process can be an enjoyable exploration of your passions and genuine self. I firmly believe that every step in the college application process happens for a reason. Each school presents something remarkable.

Reflecting back, I wish I had known not to place excessive pressure on myself during this process. It’s essential to be patient, share your unique story, and find joy in the experience. Embrace the opportunity to showcase your authentic self and let your enthusiasm shine through. Trust in the process, and remember, every institution has its own distinctive offerings waiting to be discovered.

In a gesture that symbolizes opening the door to the next phase of their journey, each senior crossed the stage to exchange keys with a classmate, solidifying the unbreakable bonds forged among the graduating class.

A Time for Reflection Senior Lunches with the Head of School Each year, seniors are invited in small groups to have lunch with Head of School Julian Bull and various school leaders in the Boardroom. This special CH tradition, which first began with the school’s second Head of School, The Rev. Canon Thomas Clarke, gives seniors the opportunity to share feedback on their student experience at Campbell Hall.

As a community of inquiry, Campbell Hall believes that asking thoughtful questions leads to deeper meaning. These lunches during which seniors are asked to share their reflections help CH’s leadership center the student experience and steer the direction of the school.

“I love that our seniors clearly feel respected, seen, and heard,” said Head of School Julian Bull. “They know that if they offer feedback in a constructive and thoughtful way, their beloved school will become even better. This is what we want in a Campbell Hall graduate: appreciation for what they have, and the capacity for analysis and vision to make the world better. I leave every lunch grateful to work in this special place.”

When asked what aspects of Campbell Hall they would like to protect, here are some of the answers from this year’s senior class: “The sense of connection.”

THE WALL SHOW Visual art students in grades 7-12 took over the Campbell Hall Gallery for the 5th Wall Show which ran from October 6 - November 4.

For three weeks leading up to the opening reception, students worked side by side, some from sketches, some from their imaginations, to create new artworks directly on the gallery walls. The exhibition transformed the gallery into a total artwork, one of the students’ favorite exhibitions of the year.

visual ARTS Budding Artists Get Inspiration The Elementary School Life Drawing afterschool program led by Elementary Science Lab co-teacher and artist Javoné Williams, was excited to welcome guest artist and CH dad West Rubinstein (Leila ’28 and Malcolm ’30). West gave a lesson in lettering, graffiti, and artistic style. Students took home a graff drawing of their name specially created by West and were given stickers from the streetwear brand Supreme, where he works.

The Campbell Hall Gallery Professional Artist Exhibition Hosted by the Junior Curators, the opening reception for “P.S. I Love You,” an exhibition of new artwork by professional artist Michael Decker, was held on November 17 in the Campbell Hall Gallery. Michael Decker was in attendance to help contextualize his artwork, including intricate sculptures, captivating collages, a miniature book reading room, and mixed media pieces that were salvaged from second-hand stores. This highly imaginative exhibition brings new context, function, and value to objects and images that were on their way out of circulation.

Evening of Jazz Concert (grades 7-12) Middle school and high school jazz musicians wowed audiences with their remarkable performances of classic standards, new jazz works, and inventive improvisation for a stunning Evening of Jazz.

Elementary After-school Programs Winter Wonderland (grades 1-6) The dancers and instrumental musicians from the elementary after-school programs displayed their talents, hard work, and love of performing as they played music and danced to seasonal favorites.

The nutcracker (grades 4-12) Campbell Hall’s 38th annual Nutcracker performance was a ballet full of magic, bravery, and celebration featuring mice, battles, snow, a new sleigh, and lots of colorful candies!

winter world music concert (grades 7-12) More than 80 CH drummers, both seasoned and new to the craft, performed traditional music from Trinidad & Tobago, North East Brazil, Jamaica, and West Africa on authentic instruments in an action-packed concert.

LOVE’S LABOR’s lost (grades 9-12) Congratulations to the cast and crew of Love’s Labor’s Lost by William Shakespeare.

Students impressed audiences with their grasp of the language and physical comedy, as they juggled with the characters’ verbal sparring, donning of disguises, a play within a play, love, and heartache. The striking sets, costumes, and lighting design further added to the beauty of the production.

winter Popular music concert (grades 9-12) The Popular Music Concert had the audience rocking out to popular songs from the 60s to today including hits from The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, the Eagles, Queen, No Doubt, and even Taylor Swift!

HOMECOMING Homecoming Spirit and Pride On September 30, the excitement on campus was palpable as more than 2,500 community members gathered for the annual Homecoming event.

The festivities kicked off with a variety of amusement rides, including a Ferris wheel, a three-story slide, the Scrambler, and a swing carousel.

Additionally, there were carnival games with prizes, lively Bingo sessions run by the Grandparents’ Committee, a Speed Pitch game hosted by the Alumni Association, and lots of delicious treats from some favorite local vendors and food trucks. The Varsity Girls’ Volleyball team participated in a family showcase where they demonstrated the skills that would later secure their state championship win. The Varsity Boys’ Football team made a grand entrance, led to the football field by the World Drumming Ensemble, and the choir energized the crowd with a stirring rendition of the National Anthem. The exciting football game was punctuated by the Cheer team’s electrifying half-time performance, followed by the beloved Homecoming Court procession. It was an incredible day of community that radiated Viking pride!

WHAT’S THE HYPE WITH The Hall?

Athletic sweatshirts and some game-day jerseys have a fresh new look. No, we didn’t change our school name or team mascot, but “The Hall” is a new Campbell Hall sports moniker – giving everyone on campus something to cheer about.

“We wanted to give our spirit wear an update,” said Athletics Director Kris King.

“The Hall is a nod to our legendary 80-year history, but with a contemporary feel. We are still the Vikings, but we just have more variety in how we sport our school pride now.”

As part of the refresh, the athletics department updated the iconic interlocking CH logo with more of a modern take on CH. “As an educational institution, we are constantly evolving,” continued Kris. “These merchandise updates coincide with the new athletic facilities that are on the horizon with The Holiday Center, and some of which are here now with The Viking Tennis Center and new sports fields. It’s a great way to keep everyone excited about what’s NEXT!”

Varsity GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL Gold Coast Champions // CIF SoCal Regional Title // 8-0 league record // 36-5 overall The Vikings swept Sacred Heart Cathedral, 25-21, 25-17, 25-14, at Santiago Canyon College on November 18, giving Campbell Hall their first state title in program history.

Mila M. ’24 earned All-League MVP and was named the Daily News All-Area Girls’ Volleyball Player of the Year.

VARSITY GIRLS’ TENNIS The team advanced to the second round of CIF-SS Playoffs. Audyssie J. ’27 competed in the CIF-SS Individual Tennis Sectionals and earned First Team All-League in Singles and Grace R. ’25 and Samantha H. ’25 earned Second Team All-League in doubles.

VARSITY GIRLS’ GOLF The Campbell Hall Girls’ Golf Team finished strong this season with consistent play from Audrey P. ’27 and Lizzy A. ’27 along with Claire K. ’25! Claire led the team in the finals with Low Honors. Congratulations to Claire, Lizzy, Audrey and Jadyn for earning Second Team All-League honors!

VARSITY FOOTBALL Andrew P. ’26 earned First Team All-League honors and Sam A. ’26 and Cameron Y. ’24 earned Second Team-All League honors.

VARSITY CHEER This year, the cheer team elevated their skills at a stunt camp where they trained with athletes from Netflix’s Cheer docuseries.

The team also dazzled the crowd with an outstanding Homecoming performance.

VARSITY CROSS COUNTRY Reilly B. ’24, Watson E. ’27, and Olivia S. ’27 earned Second Team All-League honors. Reilly qualified for CIF Finals and placed 14th in his heat with a time of 17:14 at the Mt. Sac course. Watson broke the record for fastest 5K by a freshman in the school’s history.

Swinging Success

Golf, Tennis & Pickleball Classic On the crisp and sunny morning of October 23, the picturesque grounds of Braemar Country Club played host to a trifecta of golf, tennis, and pickleball tournaments in honor of the recently retired CH CEO, Fred McNutt.

The Campbell Hall Athletic Department hosted this event to support our various athletic programs. Parents, alumni, and friends of the school community gathered for a day of friendly competition, including an exciting helicopter ball drop - all for a worthy cause. Incorporating pickleball into what has customarily been a golf and tennis tournament proved immensely successful and will be a new cherished annual tradition at CH!

Dynamic alum couple Andrew Lawson ’06 and Emma Ogiens ’09, with co-owners designer John Zabawa and chef Evan Algorri, recently opened Café Telegrama, a chic new coffee shop in Melrose Hill that serves up a fine selection of brews and bites.

Jrue Holiday ’08 NBA Star Honored for Community Impact

Jrue ’08 and Lauren Holiday were honored with the 2023 Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian ESPY Award for their transformative community impact. Through their foundation, the JLH Social Impact Fund, the Milwaukee Bucks’ all-star guard and his wife have awarded grants to more than 150 Black and Brown small businesses and nonprofits in cities where they have personal connections: Los Angeles, Indianapolis, New Orleans, and Milwaukee.

Graham Benjamin ’11 Designing Buildings and Brands

After graduating from the USC School of Architecture in 2016, Graham Benjamin ’11 honed his craft as a multi-disciplinary designer and established a strong network before starting his creative design studio, Mudroom. Mudroom specializes in developing architectural concepts and graphics for retail brands, experiential agencies, and real estate firms around the world. To name a few, Mudroom's client list includes Justin Bieber’s clothing company, Drew House, Neiman Marcus, and Figue+Co. Mudroom has designed pop-up stores in Tokyo, Shanghai, Seoul, London, and Toronto, designed single family homes across the U.S., and developed graphics for New York, Milan, and Paris Fashion Week events.

Emily Grossman ’11 Inspiring Little Hands with Big Hearts

Emily Grossman ’11 is the Director, Volunteer & Community Engagement for Baby2Baby, a nonprofit providing children living in poverty across the country with diapers, clothing, and all the basic necessities every child deserves. The kindergarten class selected Baby2Baby as the organization they would support for the Outreach Gift Fair, and Emily graciously visited the class to share more about their important work. During her visit, the students were invited to create handmade cards for baby packs distributed to needy children. See “Holiday Gifting with Purpose” story on page 23.

Jackson Eick ’18 Writer, Producer, and Actor Launches Production Company

As part of his new production company launched with friends, Jackson Eick ’18 co-wrote and starred in an original play Milk & Honey which had a short run in New York City. The play centers on the notion that “despite the hopelessness that beckons us to indulge in our own suffering, there remains an everlasting spark of hope to accomplish change, peace, stillness, connection, and love.”

Lauren Jones ’10 Sports Writer Makes a New Play

Lauren Jones ’10 joined The Sporting Tribune as a Senior Writer, where she will bring her knowledge of the sports world and writing talents to bear. She was previously the Lakers beat writer for the Los Angeles Sentinel and also covered the Dodgers, Rams, and USC. She also worked at Fox Sports, ESPN, and Snapchat.

Max Watson ’15 Drummer Finds His Rhythm

CH Steel Band alum Max Watson ’15 performed in conjunction with the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center (JACCC) for the sold-out Makoto Taiko drumming concert at the 880-seat Aratani Theater in Little Tokyo. The evening included a surprise visit from his former CH music teacher Mr. Bruns!

Keely Marshall ’15 Actor Lands Great Role

Alumni Join with CH Performing Arts Department Director Megan Adell To Host Summer Arts Program for Underserved Youth

Keely Marshall ’15 appeared in an episode of the hit HBO Max comedy series The Righteous Gemstones, playing young Amber Gemstone.

This summer, CH Performing Arts Department Director Megan Adell produced a summer arts program sponsored by the City of LA’s Department of Cultural Affairs. She hired a number of CH alumni to help.

The program’s lead teacher was Remi Moses ’11, along with her assistants Jess McPherson ’22, Toby Lim ’22, and Mia Phillips ’22.

In addition, Jason Goldstein ’12 was the guest music teacher and accompanist. See the article “Making Connections Through Art” on page 20 for more details.

Cole Hartman ’90 Nature Theme Park Hosts Deaf Awareness Event

Cole Hartman ’90, Vice President of Marketing and Sales for Anakeesta, a nature immersive mountaintop theme park in the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains, helped host more than 100 guests from Knoxville Center for the Deaf for a special Deaf Awareness Day event. Guests were welcomed with breakfast and sign language interpreters to maximize their adventure experience.

Tyler Savage ’05 Writer/Director’s Latest Film Makes the Festival Circuit

Tyler Savage ’05 attended NYU Tisch before working as a Story Editor at Warner Bros. and then serving as a producer for Terrence Malick. He’s gone on to write and direct two feature films, the second of which, Stalker, was released by Vertical Entertainment in 2021. His new film Oddities is currently on the festival circuit, playing at the Austin Film Festival, Santa Fe International, Screamfest, and dozens more.

Blaze Isayan ’21 Motivational Coach Helps Young Men

Rock Berg ’11 Musician Creates New Sound

Blaze Isayan ’21 launched the Discipline Institute with the goal of helping young men harness self-discipline to gain confidence, break bad habits, and build self-esteem. His 3-day “habit forming blueprint” seeks to instill healthy habits and transform lives through individualized coaching and personalized strategies.

Rock Berg ’11 joined with best friend Luca to form the band Trophy Wives.

In collaboration with producers Dan Reynolds and Wayne Sermon from Imagine Dragons, they create a new genre-defying sound, a mixture of tropical, western, and pop music. Their first gig was at the Resident DTLA, following the release of their first single with Downtown Records on October 13.

Tiya Kamba-Griffin ’19 Volleyball Player Scores a Personal Win

Tiya Kamba-Griffin ’19, a volleyball player for the California State University-Sacramento Hornets, has been named the Big Sky Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season. Tiya, a Biomedical major, has had an impressive collegiate career and has been an incredible asset to her team.

Tamara Conniff ’89 Maui Fire Survivor Shares Her Story

Tamara Conniff ’89, CEO of AMR Songs, and her family narrowly escaped the deadly blaze that reduced her home and beloved town of Lahaina to ashes. She shares her harrowing account in The Hollywood Reporter and how she is now advocating to protect the culture, rights, and land of the island’s Indigenous people from predatory developers. As she says, “Lahaina must stay in Lahaina hands.” As the co-founder of the nonprofit, Mana Mentors, which helps teach at-risk youth how to surf and skate, she has pivoted to raising money so that her organization can help rebuild this historic place she calls home.

Jaida Hodge-Adams ’19 Collegiate Volleyball Player Honored

Indie-folk-rock band Great Big Cow was started in 2022 by CH friends Finn Darby ’23, Paolo Pesce ’23, Will Angarola ’23, and Wyatt N. ’24. The group has amassed a following playing local venues such as The Mint, Largo, and Troubadour and recently released their second album.

Congratulations to Jaida Hodge-Adams ’19 who was named Bowdoin College’s nominee for the NCAA Woman of the Year and Division III Commissioners Association Women's Sport StudentAthlete of the Year nominee. The NCAA Woman of the Year Award honors graduating student-athletes who have distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in the areas of academic achievement, athletics excellence, service, and leadership.

Henry Levine ’11 Entrepreneur Starts Thriving Business

After graduating from Loyola Marymount University, Henry Levine ’11 embarked on a successful career in brand consultation and clothing manufacturing, contributing his expertise to renowned brands such as Midnight Studios, Madhappy, and N.E. Sense, among many others. He is now the owner and CEO of ADL Unlimited Inc., which specializes in custom-branded promotional goods, merchandise, and clothing manufacturing for diverse brands and businesses.

Over 100 CH alumni gathered at Laurel Tavern in Studio City for the 9th Annual Thanksgiving Mixer.
