Achieving any objective begins with a well-laid plan. Campbell Hall’s mission-driven strategic plan serves as a roadmap, guiding decision-making and planning for the school’s current and future needs.

The strategic plan sets forth five priorities that are central to Campbell Hall and, by doing so, defines who we are as an educational institution. It outlines specific goals to keep the school focused on fully realizing these objectives, allowing resources to be aligned accordingly. Additionally, it lets us track our progress over time, with quantifiable metrics and qualitative reporting that provide objective insights into our performance.

While our strategic plan lives on our website, we understand that many people may not know to look for it, or are simply too busy to review it. For this reason, the 2023-24 Impact Report centers on how CH’s strategic priorities are implemented in our programs and policies and highlights some of the major accomplishments from the previous ﬁscal year. In essence, it illustrates our strategic plan in action

The annual CH Impact Report is also an expression of our gratitude for the incredible partnership we receive from the community each year and how that generosity has made a difference in the lives of our students and to the school as a whole. It is a testimony to the ways your support enables Campbell Hall to continue achieving our common goal of preparing students for happy, successful, and fulﬁlling lives today and in the future. We could not do this essential work without your ongoing support and for that, we are deeply grateful.

Having celebrated our 80th anniversary on February 7, 2024, this Impact Report demonstrates that Campbell Hall’s mission and values are as strong as ever, with our strategic plan serving as our guiding north star. We hope it helps all of those providing philanthropic support for the school and who are acknowledged in this report’s pages to see a clear connection between their generosity and the work done every day to beneﬁt students and advance the mission of the school.

With another successful year of philanthropy and community-building in the books, we’d like to extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who made the 2023-24 school year so incredible. Yet, as incredible as it was, it was also a typical year for Campbell Hall, with community members continuing to excel in every aspect. Our committed faculty created innovative and dynamic programming to engage our students in the classroom. CH students were inspired and empowered to ask meaningful questions and understand their important part in the world. Dedicated volunteers enriched the experiences of both our own and the broader community.

This harmonious and valuable partnership between the school and all its constituents is an essential element driving our success over our 80-year history. With record admissions applications up approximately 4% from the previous year and up 25% over the last ﬁve years, it is evident that prospective families feel our unique sense of community when they walk onto our campus and see our dedication to the whole child in our classrooms.

Your generosity helps fuel the school’s exceptional level of education. The 2023-24 ﬁscal year was impressive, with more than $12.5 million raised to support the school’s daily and long-term needs. Completing the capital campaign for the Holiday Center remains a top priority for Campbell Hall.

The new facilities will invest in our students’ health, wellness, athletic, and academic education while reshaping the heart of campus to provide more nature-ﬁlled spaces. With more than $30 million raised to date, we have made tremendous strides in reaching our fundraising goal. However, there is still more to do. We hope you will join us in supporting this crucial capital campaign that will impact generations to come.

The Board oversees the development and implementation of Campbell Hall’s strategic plan. With extensive input from numerous community stakeholders, the priorities and goals of our strategic plan are set, which, in turn, helps steer the direction of the school. With the best interests of our students and school in mind, a lot of thought, care, and collaboration go into creating actionable steps to accomplish these missiondriven objectives. The pages of this Impact Report demonstrate how your generosity and investment in Campbell Hall result in the school’s continued growth and endless opportunities for our students.

We are so grateful to David Damus ’83 and Tom Grane, our outgoing board members whose terms ended at the close of the 2023-24 school year. Thank you so much for your dedication to the school.

Kawanna Brown is the Chief Operating Officer of Magic Johnson Enterprises (MJE), overseeing the operational and strategic management of the company’s diverse portfolio. Buoyed by her 28 years of service and under her leadership, MJE has experienced signiﬁcant growth and expansion. She is directly credited for being instrumental in growing Magic Johnson Enterprises (MJE) to become one of the most prominent AfricanAmerican-owned and operated brands in the United States. Before becoming Chief Operating Officer of MJE, Kawanna served as President of the Magic Johnson Foundation (MJF), established to address the needs of the communities it serves. Her passion for educating young people was the inspiration to increase the foundation’s purpose with partnerships among nonproﬁt organizations. She has been an active mentor to teens and college students throughout the country for more than a decade. She is currently President of the Magic Johnson Foundation Board of Directors and is a member of several prominent Boards which include: LA Philharmonic, The Clara Lionel Foundation, Private School Axis, BeyGOOD, and Educating Young Minds. She has received honors from the City of Los Angeles for her philanthropic and community outreach efforts. Kawanna graduated from UCLA with a B.A. in Sociology with a specialization in business. She and her husband Jay are the proud parents to Beau ’29, Madison ’27, and Jay ’20 (a class of ’24 NYU graduate).

FINANCIAL OVERVIEW

Charitable giving is at the heart of our school’s growth, helping us achieve our strategic objectives as set out by our Board of Directors, administration, and other school leadership. The 2023-24 school year marked Campbell Hall’s 80th anniversary and another banner year of philanthropy.

Contributions to CH NOW: The Campbell Hall Annual Fund surpassed $3.5 million, one of the highest totals in the school’s history. This helped us achieve our budget goals necessary to maintain every aspect of Campbell Hall’s daily operational needs.

Campbell Hall’s endowment, a permanent fund in which the principal is invested to grow in perpetuity, provides annual support to our operating budget. The endowment continued to achieve healthy returns in 2023-24, which allowed us to allocate 4% of the fund to supplement the needs of the school.

With more than $30 million committed to CH NEXT: The Campaign for The Holiday Center, over $8 million of which was raised in the 2023-24 school year, we have made signiﬁcant headway in achieving our fundraising goal.

WELCOME

Mark Galang Controller

We are pleased to welcome Mark Galang as Campbell Hall’s new Controller. Mark brings over 20 years of experience in ﬁnance and accounting, with a strong background in both the corporate sector and education. He has previously served as Director of Finance at various institutions, including Farmers Insurance, California Virtual Academics, and Trinity Classical Academy. Most recently, he served as the Assistant Controller at Notre Dame High School.

As Controller, Mark is responsible for leading our accounting, audit, and payroll activities. He also manages all ﬁnancial and accounting reports, controls, and standards.

Mark graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Guam with a degree in Business Administration, majoring in Accounting. He resides in Santa Clarita with his wife, Hurley, and their two daughters, Erin and Elin.

As we reﬂect on another remarkable year, I am thrilled to extend my deepest gratitude for your unwavering support and generosity. Your commitment to Campbell Hall has once again propelled us to new heights, and thanks to you, this year’s fundraising efforts have been tremendously successful, second only to last year’s record-breaking achievements.

In 2023-24, the total funds given or pledged to our initiatives surpassed $12.5 million. Notably, over 1,245 donors contributed to the CH NOW campaign, exceeding our ambitious 2023-24 goal of $3.5 million. The impact of your donations is evident every day, enhancing the lives of our students and teachers. The funds are allocated to our highest priorities, such as supporting our dedicated teachers, providing ﬁnancial aid, and maintaining our beautiful campus.

Our long-term capital improvement project, CH NEXT: The Campaign for the Holiday Center, also saw signiﬁcant progress this year. In October, we were proud to announce that, thanks to the extraordinary generosity of the Ressler and Holiday families, our new building will be named the Holiday Center Following this announcement, we opened the doors to the new Viking Tennis Center, marking the completion of phase one of the CH NEXT campus transformation. This year, donors added $8.2 million in commitments to CH NEXT, pushing the total campaign fundraising past the $30 million milestone. This sum includes two multi-million dollar donations, which are among the largest in Campbell Hall’s history.

Our year in charitable support concluded with the spectacular Bagpiper’s Ball in May, where nearly $1.2 million was contributed to our ﬁnancial aid program. This event not only highlights the ﬁnancial generosity of our community but also the strong spirit of volunteerism that thrives within it.

Your generosity with time and resources is truly the backbone of our community. It is because of you that we can provide an exceptional educational experience and continue to do more for our students than would otherwise be possible. Thank you once again for being such an integral part of our community and for your continued partnership in fostering an environment where every student can thrive.

Strategic Priority: ETHICAL, SPIRITUAL, SOCIAL, AND EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT

As a school of faith and reason rooted in the rich 500-year tradition of Episcopal education, ethical and spiritual development are at the heart of all we do. Students learn best when they feel seen, known, and loved, so we prioritize an inclusive social-emotional development program.

During Campbell Hall’s unique K-12 chapel program, students gather with friends and faculty to hear stories from the world’s various religious faiths and traditions, enjoy performances and presentations, and explore questions of the heart and mind. They are ﬁlled with laughter, love, and a sense of community and purpose.

Our human development program provides age-appropriate education in general health, human sexuality, and mental health, offering important developmental information and spaces for open, honest discussions. Responding to research and the needs of our students, we expanded human development education in 2023-24 to start in kindergarten. This early start builds foundational social-emotional skills and health knowledge for more advanced discussions in upper grades.

Elementary

In elementary school, the Toolbox social-emotional learning program is an integral part of daily life. It helps students navigate their emotions with 12 core strategies and a shared vocabulary that fosters resilience, selfmastery, and empathy. Council practice, facilitated by faculty, offers contemplative space that helps students voice their feelings, deepen their understanding of self and others, and forge authentic relationships.

In 2023-24, two key programs were successfully added to the already robust elementary social-emotional education. The Harmony curriculum supports healthy relationships and builds social-emotional skills, while Owning Up helps 4th and 5th graders understand group behavior, the inﬂuence of social media, and the dynamics of discrimination and bigotry.

Middle School

Middle school students are grouped into Houses, each with its own unique identity, heritage, and traditions, fostering pride and camaraderie. Students earn points for their House through acts of kindness and participation in community events. This system strengthens class bonds, encourages altruism, and enhances the student experience.

The 2023-24 middle school advisory program was structured around four core themes: self-identity, sense of belonging, community building, and academics, creating a well-rounded experience. New initiatives included Student Appreciation Councils, where every student received a dedicated round of appreciation council from their peers and teachers; and Contemplative Practice rotations, introducingstudents to various mindfulness practices.

High School

The high school chapel program provides a sacred space for students to share what matters most to them. In a special series created by high school chaplain The Rev. Joseph Courtney, Senior Stories blossomed this year. Students presented on major world issues, shared their personal stories of identity and growth, and spoke about their life experiences. This heartfelt series serves as a model for younger students to feel conﬁdent in speaking their truths.

Parents

Campbell Hall offers robust parent education programming with world-class speakers as part of a values-driven school-parent partnership to raise decent, loving, and responsible students. In addition to our regular programming, we will co-sponsor two events with School Speaker Alliance LA (SSALA), a regional parent education coalition of independent schools, in the 2024-25 school year.

The CH Parent Mindfulness Group meets weekly, offering guided meditation and education on topics ranging from self-care to communication with children, fostering a supportive community for parents.

At Campbell Hall, our commitment to ethical, spiritual, social, and emotional development helps students develop an innate sense of worth, honor human differences, forge authentic relationships, and build a more compassionate community.

COMPREHENSIVE GIVING

Campbell Hall is deeply grateful for your generous support received from July 1, 2023 through June 30, 2024.

Your contributions to the school’s vital fundraising initiatives included gifts and pledge payments to CH NOW: The Campbell Hall Annual Fund, CH NEXT: The Campaign for The Holiday Center, an array of endowments, designated funds such as the Campbell Scholars Program (CSP), as well as fundraising events such as the Bagpiper’s Ball.

Our community’s spirit of generosity exemplifies one of Campbell Hall’s key strategic priorities, which emphasizes the ethical, spiritual, social, and emotional development of our students. This is evident in the contributions of financial support, time, and talent that allow Campbell Hall to flourish and our students to thrive. Our faculty design rigorous, meaningful, and relevant experiences that promote curiosity, engagement, connection, and self-reﬂection.

K-12 Academic Philosophy Statement

This year, Campbell Hall adopted a K-12 academic philosophy statement that articulates the depth and breadth of our distinctive brand of teaching and learning. It has been used as a cornerstone of conversations to guide policy and decision-making throughout the academic year including in the Education Policy Review Committee, Instructional Leadership Committee, and the Faculty Evaluation Committee.

Faculty Evaluations

A new faculty evaluation system was successfully launched in 2023-24. Faculty recorded their goals at the start of the academic year, completed an end-of-year reflection, and noted their successes along the way. Administration observed faculty who were in the first cycle of the evaluation process six times, followed by conversation and feedback, helping to spur reflection and growth.

Faculty Innovation Incubator

Launching in 2024-25, the Faculty Innovation Incubator will support faculty in bringing their innovative curriculum ideas into the classroom, providing comprehensive support from concept to implementation.

Academic Philosophy Statement

Campbell Hall’s unique academic philosophy rests on the idea of spiritually integrated inquiry and community. Joyful, purposeful learning and deep relationships with others lead our students to understand the wonder of something greater than themselves. Our faculty design rigorous, meaningful, and relevant experiences that promote curiosity, engagement, connection, and self-reﬂection. We value depth and breadth of content, the mastery of essential skills, and the internal motivation necessary for a life of intellectual curiosity. Courageous conversations cultivate the inclusion of diverse viewpoints, and ethical reasoning guides student agency. Student choice and individualized feedback motivate problem solving and risk-taking. Students in our care apply each discipline to real-world challenges and use their experiences as a path for justice. Each child comes to recognize who they are and what they value.

Community of Inquiry Institute

The Community of Inquiry Institute held two successful sessions in 2023-24 and has developed consistent vocabulary and lessons around teaching and leading from an authentic core, growth mindset, and CH’s academic philosophy.

Accelerated Learning

In the elementary school, differentiation and small group work meet the needs of accelerated learners, supported by associate teachers in each classroom. In 2023-24, kindergarten and ﬁrst grade adopted a new phonics program for accelerated learners. The addition of a reading specialist in the lower grades also enabled differentiated instruction in reading for higher-level students. Sixth grade students can take an accelerated math class, which follows the middle school model. Students in grades 7-12 can accelerate their learning in world language, math, and dance, with options for advanced classes in other disciplines in grades 10-12.

In 2023-24, faculty in the CHAI (Campbell Hall Advanced Inquiry) program participated in a three-day intensive project-based learning workshop and applied their learning to their ﬁnal projects. Preliminary data shows this approach signiﬁcantly increased the meaning and relevance of learning for students.

At Campbell Hall, whether through differentiated learning in the elementary school or through engagement in exploratory or advanced courses in the secondary school, every student ﬁnds the appropriate level of academic challenge and the support needed to reach their full potential.

Strategic Priority: BUSINESS CONTINUITY AND DEVELOPMENT

Planning for and securing Campbell Hall’s future has always been critical to the school’s strategic plan. Because of this foresight and the community’s efforts, we have been able to weather tumultuous times including a global ﬁnancial crisis and a pandemic. With a balanced operating budget, growth in fundraising, a robust endowment, and a highly successful admissions record with full enrollment K-12, Campbell Hall’s ﬁnancial position continues to be strong.

Fiscal Responsibility

Campbell Hall’s Chief Financial Officer and the Business Office team strive to maintain a balanced budget by consistently monitoring expenditures and assisting budget managers in each department with their spending needs. In the 2023-24 ﬁscal year, the school beat the budget by over two million dollars.

Investing in Our Campus: For Today and the Future

Maintaining our beautiful 15-acre campus and its extensive facilities requires foresight and planning. The Business Office collaborates closely with the Facilities Department to anticipate future repairs and maintenance needs, resulting in a detailed ﬁve-year plan to fund necessary capital and long-term expenses, ensuring the safety and beauty of our infrastructure. As part of the next phase of the school’s master plan, the completion of The Holiday Center will elevate the student experience by ushering in a new era of community connection, providing enhanced learning opportunities, and bringing athletics, ﬁtness, and wellness to the next level.

Fundraising to Meet the School’s Needs

As with most independent schools, tuition alone does not cover the full cost of a Campbell Hall education. In fact, it only provides about 86% of the necessary funds. The incredible generosity of our community helps ﬁll that gap through budget relief provided by CH NOW: The Campbell Hall Annual Fund, and long-term sustainability through endowment gifts. CH NEXT: The Campaign for The Holiday Center is vital to the growth and development of our campus and programs. Fundraising for this project is a priority for the school in order to achieve this ambitious and important goal.

Sustaining Our Beloved Community

Our commitment to ﬁnancial aid and competitive salary and beneﬁts packages for employees allows us to attract and retain talented students, faculty, and staff.

Our $9 million financial aid program, one of the most robust among independent schools in the area, supports 22% of CH students. We prioritize the well-being of our employees by providing programs covering everything from mental health to physical fitness to financial wellness. Additionally, we have developed two annual surveys to assess and identify targeted programming to support their needs and development.

At Campbell Hall, we understand the importance of long-term planning to ensure that the legacy of our world-class education and beloved community endures for generations to come.

Growth and development are essential for any institution to remain viable and competitive. As a strategic priority for the school, our leadership has worked over the course of decades to create and follow a master plan that ensures Campbell Hall’s long-term success.

The Holiday Center is the next phase in the evolution of Campbell Hall, ushering in a new era of health, wellness, athletics, and academics. The facility will feature a new gym with seating for 900, a healthy-eating dining hall, an elementary music room, an elementary dance studio, and more!

EMORY & ANDREA JONES Spotlight

Streetwear fashion designer and Head of Lifestyle at Paper Planes, Emory Jones, and his wife, Andrea, value community above all else. Their daughter Justice ’33 started Campbell Hall in kindergarten during the peak of the pandemic, and her ﬁrst introduction to the school was online. While it was difficult for all families across the country to adjust to remote learning, Andrea and Emory were impressed with how Campbell Hall’s comprehensive programming created a seamless educational and social-emotional support network for their child. “As the year went on, we could see how Justice was thriving and we knew we made the right choice in Campbell Hall,” said Andrea. “Campbell Hall is strong in academics, but the ﬁrst thing they teach is how to be a good human and a sense of community, and that’s the most important thing to our family,” added Emory.

Emory joined the Board of Directors in 2022, is on the Board of Black Heritage Families, and volunteers in the elementary science lab twice a month. “I love Campbell Hall and it makes me feel so good to spend time at the school,” said Emory. “But not everybody is in a position where they can come. So I like to tell the kids that I’m representing all the dads.”

Equity in education is a primary focus for Emory and Andrea. On a recent philanthropic trip to Colombia, where Andrea’s family is from, Justice was moved by seeing how many children lived in poverty and she told her parents that she wished all of them could go to a school like hers. “We knew we needed to ﬁgure out how to help kids in our own backyard,” said Andrea.

Emory and Andrea decided to generously donate to CH ﬁnancial aid to support Black and Latinx students through EDIF (Elementary Diversity and Inclusion Fund). They also created the Justice Jones Endowment Fund which will support CH ﬁnancial aid in perpetuity. “We came from nothing and had to work hard to get where we’re at,” explained Emory. “We wanted to make sure others with similar backgrounds and who look like us have an opportunity to experience Campbell Hall.” Much like Emory’s brand with the slogan “Bet on Yourself,” he and Andrea are helping both current and future generations of students to bet on themselves by helping provide access to a CH education. “We love being a part of this community and we want to help pass it on to others,” said Emory.

The couple also wanted to support the school’s campus transformation by contributing to CH NEXT: The Campaign for The Holiday Center. “The Holiday Center will take the school to another level,” said Emory. One aspect of the project that appeals to Emory and Andrea is the IDEA Center which will be housed in the new building and will help students, faculty, and staff develop, incubate, and launch initiatives and programs that will beneﬁt the broader community. entrepreneurial spirit which Emory, who founded the streetwear brand Paper Planes, and Andrea, who is helping Justice launch her own swimwear line “I Am I,” want to have nurtured in all CH students.

Emory and Andrea’s gift to the Holiday Center will name the lobby of the 55,000 sq. ft. facility. As the hub of the building and a connective space, this is an especially ﬁtting naming opportunity given their value of community. “We think of this as a collective donation on behalf of all our kids,” said Andrea. “We need everyone’s voice.” Emory noted, “The more we all collectively put into the school, the better Campbell Hall will be for our children, and for those who come after.” ■

Strategic Priority: SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

From caring for our neighbors to caring for the environment, social responsibility encompasses a wide range of meaningful outreach and service-learning opportunities that are integral to the Campbell Hall educational experience. They nurture every student’s character and soul, fostering a more compassionate and connected community. Campbell Hall models social responsibility through a myriad of programs and public partnerships, giving students ample opportunities to engage in giving back and learning how to be good stewards and citizens.

Student-Led Fundraising Initiatives

Campbell Hall’s collective effort to positively impact the broader community is signiﬁcant. Elementary students help raise tens of thousands of dollars for nonproﬁt organizations through the yearly Outreach Gift Fair and collect food for the North Hollywood Interfaith Food Pantry each Friday. K-12 families join together to raise money and collect donations of needed goods for several charities during the annual Community Sunday event. The annual Hillsides ingathering chapels in each division provide hundreds of gifts for children in need during the holidays. In 2023-24, CH high school students collectively engaged in approximately 22,000 hours of service, and, beginning in the 2024-25 school year, middle school students will participate in more than 1,800 hours of community service. The student-led club Hands4Haiti fundraises for supplies for our sister schools in Haiti and dozens of students and faculty head to Mexico each year to help build homes for families in need. Outreach is integrated into experiential education trips and special days of service, such as the 8th grade Make A Difference Day.

Collaborative Partnerships Advance Equity in Education

As we celebrate the 10th anniversary of one of Campbell Hall’s signature public partnerships, we see how programs like the Campbell Scholars Program (CSP) allow us to extend the school’s core resources to serve and make a positive impact on the broader community. CSP is an enrichment and college access program designed to support low-income, high-achieving public school students aspiring to be the ﬁrst in their families to graduate from a four-year college. In 2023-24, nearly all of the ﬁrst cohort of Campbell Scholars graduated from selective colleges and universities, paving the way for the cohorts of college aspirants that follow.

As part of CH’s IDEA (Inquiry, Democracy, Equity, Agency) Center, the Public Partnership Incubator is designed to help faculty develop and launch mission-aligned programs that create rich and reciprocal relationships between Campbell Hall and underserved schools in the community. These programs engage Campbell Hall faculty, students, parents, and alumni in providing mentoring, instruction, and opportunity.

Sustainability is also a key part of Campbell Hall’s commitment to social responsibility. From our Board-level Sustainability Committee to student-run environmental clubs to campus initiatives such as drought-resistant landscaping and electric vehicle charging stations, to a tailor-made CH Sustainability Plan, we demonstrate our commitment to the environment every day. The Campbell Hall Tower Gardens, located on the 2nd floor of the LEED Gold-certified Spielberg Family Arts and Education Center, and elementary school gardens provide students with unique opportunities to learn about sustainable growing systems through hands-on experience. As in prior years, hundreds of pounds of organic produce was donated to the poverty relief nonprofit organization MEND (Meet Each Need with Dignity) in 2023-24.

To reduce CH’s carbon footprint, solar panels, funded by a LADWP grant, will be installed on the roofs of the Garver Gym and the Theater, producing a quarter of the energy that the school uses in these spaces. In 2023-24, many old windows were replaced with energy efficient models throughout the campus. Yard trimmings are collected for compost through the city of Los Angeles. Campbell Hall’s sustainability initiatives also focus on educating students about the importance of caring for the environment, teaching them to be good stewards of the earth. This past year, Director of Facilities and Sustainability Michael Panman visited the CHAI Environmental Science classes to explain how e-gauges installed in the Garver Gym and the Spielberg Family Arts and Education Center are used to track energy usage, serving as powerful learning and research tools.

Our commitment to the broader community is one way we demonstrate our strategic priority of social responsibility.

The Campbell Scholars Program (CSP), which just celebrated its 10th anniversary, supports underserved, high-achieving ﬁrst-generation students and their families along the college and career pathway from 6th grade through college graduation. This program is a beautiful example of how Campbell Hall is embracing its role as a civic institution. Over 300 Campbell Hall faculty, staff, alumni, current parents, and parents of alumni have supported the scholars by mentoring, giving charitably, or extending opportunities. Over a dozen private foundations have also joined the cause, an endorsement not only of our program, but also of the Campbell Hall values and philosophy it is built on.

Strategic Priority: DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION, AND JUSTICE

Campbell Hall has long been devoted to cultivating and sustaining an environment that empowers individuals and groups to affirm and celebrate their identity. By creating an inclusive community, we follow our mission of nurturing decent, loving, and responsible human beings and teach students to lead effectively in a diverse world.

Affinity Spaces

Affinity groups in grades 3-12 and affinity clubs in grades 7-12 provide spaces where students can affirm their identity, build community, cultivate leadership, and develop skills and strategies to support their school experiences. Family and CH faculty/staff affinity organizations allow community members who share an identity to connect, celebrate milestones, and honor culturally signiﬁcant events. In 2023-24, the MENA (Middle Eastern North African) student and Family Affinity Groups were established, the ﬁrst annual Neurodiversity Week was held to acknowledge our community’s neurodiverse students and to educate our community, and the Jewish Alumni Council was formed.

Community Learning and Engagement Opportunities

Campbell Hall provides important educational opportunities in the DEIJ space, including the annual Centering Latinx Voices and Narratives Symposium which was held in March 2024. The Symposium builds on existing training and skills to implement sustained growth in our equity practice and reinforces the school’s commitment to anti-bias education. The K-12 curriculum inquiry and revisioning work has been furthered through the Campbell Hall Anti-Bias Curriculum Redesign Lab, which helps teachers carefully evaluate and redesign units utilizing the Learning for Justice Social Justice Standards as a framework.

In the 2023-24 school year, Campbell Hall implemented Speak Up at School: How to Respond to Everyday Prejudice, Bias, and Stereotypes in secondary classrooms and provided a parallel threepart course for parents. Programs like this, along with in-house annual educational forums for faculty such as the longstanding Inclusion Institute — with this year’s theme being “Centering Counternarratives to Disrupt Bias and Increase Belonging” — reinforce Campbell Hall’s commitment to continuing education in DEIJ. In partnership with the Parents’ Association, the school also hosts monthly check-ins with parents as part of an ongoing dialogue to hear and address concerns and have an open forum to discuss anything schoolrelated that might be on parents’ minds.

Towards a Diverse, Inclusive Community

Through our robust financial aid program, we are able to attract and retain families of diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, which benefits our entire community. Chapel honors the diversity of the human experience by celebrating holidays and traditions from various world cultures and faiths. Campbell Hall set forth a goal of achieving a 50% student of color population by 2025, and by this fall, we will have achieved that metric a full year early, marking the highest levels of diversity in the school’s history. In November 2019, Campbell Hall formally moved from a coeducational school to an all gender school, reflecting that gender identity is a spectrum and making clear that we welcome students and community members of all genders.

Transparency and Open Communication

Campbell Hall holds an annual State of Inclusion that provides data analysis from our yearly parent surveys to help determine the needs of our community. The address identiﬁes where Campbell Hall is succeeding and where there is room for improvement in terms of DEIJ.

To be accountable and transparent about Campbell Hall’s DEIJ efforts and successes, the school launched the monthly DEIJ newsletter in the fall of 2020. In it, we report to the community about CH DEIJ-related news, events, and engagement opportunities and provide resources and messages from leadership and those working in this space. We even have an Instagram account @CampbellHallDEIJ.

At Campbell Hall, we believe in and respect the innate worth of every human being. We are committed to creating a just and equitable educational institution because we all learn and grow best in a diverse and inclusive environment.

A diverse and inclusive community is not only a contemporary moral imperative but also essential for creating an optimal learning environment that beneﬁts every student. DEIJ is a strategic priority for Campbell Hall as it centers this objective with clear and discernable goals.

The Bagpgiper’s Ball is a community-building and fun-ﬁlled event that provides support for Campbell Hall’s Financial Aid program, which is essential for fostering socioeconomic diversity. Many of Campbell Hall’s endowment funds were established to grow diversity across multiple areas through strong longterm ﬁnancial aid support.

The 68th Bagpiper’s Ball was an event like no other! Our community came together for a special evening at CLUB CH on Saturday, May 4, 2024 at The Novo in Downtown LA. Led by Ball co-chairs Ricci DeMartino, Rebeka Dikran, Dana Garfin, Dena Johnson, and Rachel Pollak, the event was a huge success raising nearly $1.2 million for financial aid. Guests enjoyed electrifying performances by Kelly Rowland and Busta Rhymes and danced the night away to music spun by DJ Reflex. Host Brandon Johnson kept the crowd entertained throughout the night. CLUB CH was truly an extraordinary celebration of community and generosity. All proceeds benefited Campbell Hall Financial Aid.

What is an Endowment?

An endowment is a pool of assets, typically sourced from charitable donations, invested to grow the principal and provide additional funding for school priorities. A predetermined percentage of Campbell Hall’s endowment is disbursed each ﬁscal year to support the school’s operations. A strong endowment is the best way to ensure that future generations beneﬁt from Campbell Hall’s extraordinary teachers, outstanding programs, and diverse community.

ENDOWED FUNDS

Alumni Legacy Scholarship Fund

Provides ﬁnancial aid to children of alumni whose families might not otherwise be able to afford a Campbell Hall education.

Argyll Endowed Scholarship Fund

Established in honor of Argyll Academy in support of scholarship funds for female students.

The Rev. Canon Julian P. Bull Endowed Scholarship Fund

Established to honor The Rev. Canon Julian P. Bull and to further student-led environment-related projects.

The Campbell Hall Black Alumni Collective Endowment Fund

Established in 2019 to assist Black students with non-tuition “auxiliary” expenses related to their Campbell Hall education while also offering Black alumni an opportunity to stay connected to their alma mater.

Campbell Scholars Program Endowment

Established in support of the Campbell Scholars Program which extends the school’s core mission to economically disadvantaged high-achieving students enrolled in Title 1 schools who aspire to be the ﬁrst in their family to graduate from a four-year college.

The Rev. Canon Thomas G. Clarke Endowed Scholarship Fund

Established by the Campbell Hall Alumni Association in honor of former Head of School, The Rev. Canon Thomas G. Clarke ’59, to recognize students who exemplify good character, commit to school service, and have the potential for academic achievement.

The Class of 2020 Endowment

Established to honor the Class of 2020 and provide ﬁnancial aid to students, a mission-critical, tangible expression of our commitment to educational access, equity, and inclusion.

The Class of 2021 Endowment

On the crisp and sunny morning of October 23, 2023 the picturesque grounds of Braemar Country Club played host to a trifecta of golf, tennis, and pickleball tournaments in honor of the recently retired CH CEO, Fred McNutt. The Campbell Hall Athletic Department hosted this event to support our various athletic programs. Parents, alumni, and friends of the school community gathered for a day of friendly competition, including an exciting helicopter ball drop - all for a worthy cause. Incorporating pickleball into what has customarily been a golf and tennis tournament proved immensely successful and will be a new cherished annual tradition at CH!

While each school year is special and unique, this year marked Campbell Hall’s 80th anniversary. As we close out this milestone in Campbell Hall’s history, we are particularly thankful for the strong foundation our school was built on and the traditions that continue. With our rich history, we recognize that as an alum, you have played an integral role in shaping our incredible community of good people.

I would like to reﬂect on a few of the highlights from the 2023-24 school year. The Alumni Board has grown by eight new members. In addition, we have expanded our affinity groups by launching the Jewish Alumni Council. We continue to engage supportive alumni who are passionate about being involved and active in the community.

A highlight for the Alumni Board was our collaboration with John and Patrice Grace for the inaugural Black Heritage Families / Black Alumni Collective Poker Tournament. This fabulous evening raised over $18,000, with all proceeds beneﬁtting the Black Alumni Collective Endowment Fund. This Endowment assists Black students with non-tuition auxiliary expenses. In the 2023-24 school year, through the fund, we provided ﬁnancial support for students to purchase musical instruments and school-related materials. We also assisted one student in attending the Campbell Hall Art History trip to Europe.

Each year, the Alumni Board awards the Argyll and Thomas Clarke Endowed Scholarships to deserving students who rely on ﬁnancial support to participate in a full range of educational experiences. In the 2023-24 school year, the Board presented scholarships to ﬁve deserving high school students.

Thank you to the alumni who have elevated their philanthropic support to Campbell Hall by becoming Visionary Viking donors. Your gifts year after year are what make these programs possible.

I’ve always been interested in joining the Alumni Board at some point in my adult life; it was just about when I was ﬁnding ways to give back to my community I thought, what better community than Campbell Hall? I was so heavily involved as a student, and it only seemed ﬁtting to return to my roots and get involved again. The school has changed immensely since I was there, but it still is the same at its core. I still felt a sense of home when I visited and got a tour of the new buildings. I hope to apply the same enthusiasm I had as a student in my extracurriculars and student council events as an

Alumni Board member. I’m excited to be of service to the future and current students and work alongside other alumni and teachers in enhancing the Campbell Hall experience.

The Campbell Hall Black Alumni Collective (CHBAC) Endowment Fund was created to assist Black students with non-tuition, “auxiliary” expenses related to their Campbell Hall education. In the 2023-24 school year, in partnership with Black Heritage Families and hosted by John and Patrice Grace, Campbell Hall held an inaugural poker tournament that raised $18,000 for the Fund!

Honoring Those Who Enrich Our Community

More than 200 incredible Campbell Hall volunteers attended the Volunteer Thank You Party at the beautiful home of Derek and Kristi Haas. This annual event celebrates the contributions of Campbell Hall volunteers who tirelessly support the students and the community with their gifts of time and talent.

As part of a cherished tradition, two outstanding volunteers were honored with the prestigious Thomas R. Von Der Ahe Volunteer of the Year Award which recognizes individuals who consistently go above and beyond the scope of their CH volunteer duties. The award symbolizes the spirit of generosity that is the cornerstone of our school’s success, enabling our school to thrive. These caring and loving volunteers are the true embodiment of Campbell Hall’s mission.

Lélia Maltzman

As the proud mom of Tea ’24 and Zoé ’22, Lélia has found innumerable ways to serve the Campbell Hall community over the years, including as the Parents’ Association Middle School Vice President. She has helped with the uniform exchange, decorated campus for Halloween and winter as part of the holiday décor committee, and provided support for the college hospitality committee. She has served as a parent ambassador and host family. Lélia spearheaded Pie and Burger Day and even singlehandedly made crêpes for the entire middle school! Lélia was a committee member and then co-chair of our beloved faculty and staff appreciation luncheons. As a team parent for middle school soccer and volleyball, and later for high school varsity soccer, she organized sports banquets at the end of each season. One of her most signiﬁcant achievements was co-chairing the Baccalaureate luncheon last year. We are incredibly grateful for Lélia’s years of service!

Aileen Cawley

With the last of her three children (Claire ’24, Finn ’21, and Brigid ’18) graduating from Campbell Hall this year, Alieen has been a dedicated volunteer for almost two decades, spanning all three divisions in a wide array of roles. She has held several leadership positions including Parents’ Association High School Vice President, Elementary Room Parent, Hospitality Chair, and Host Family Chair. She has also served on a number of committees including the Outreach Gift Fair, Parent Education, and Parent Socials. Aileen hosted a successful Party Book and was also a Parent Ambassador. In her ﬁnal year as a CH parent, she created a Senior Parent Facebook page to ensure the 12th grade parent community was kept well-informed about all the memorable CH senior events. We are so thankful for all Aileen has done for the community!

Campbell Hall volunteers are dedicated to creating a loving, welcoming environment where every community member feels a sense of belonging. Through Board-level leadership, involvement in the Parents’ Association’s myriad committees, work in the classrooms, engagement with family affinity organizations, participation on the Grandparents’ Committee, or help with fundraising through CH NOW: The Campbell Hall Annual Fund, Bagpiper’s Ball, or Party Book, we are a stronger educational institution because of our amazing volunteers.

Our K-12 students also support the community by collecting food for the North Hollywood Interfaith Food Pantry, fundraising for our sister schools in Haiti, supporting charities through the Outreach Gift Fair, and helping local nonproﬁt organizations during CH Community Sunday, among many other activities.

To our whole community of volunteers, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
