WHAT 2020 TAUGHT ME s we approached the close of the calendar year that was 2020, I heard a constant refrain of “good riddance” to the longest, most difficult year in collective memory. The turmoil wrought by the two pandemics, COVID-19 and racial and social inequality, has touched each of our lives in unique and deeply personal ways. And while we have had to wrestle with these simultaneous plagues while maintaining physical distance from one another, we nonetheless found many creative ways to connect, examples of which abound in this magazine.

As we continue to address the health and safety issues wrought by the pandemic and to delve into the important work of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice in our world, I am reminded what it means to be an intentional community. As parents, we have chosen to raise our children in this community. As faculty and staff, we have chosen to teach and work here. By and large, we can look at the people who make up this community and know we are all here because we believe not only in the mission of the school, but in each other as well, even when we disagree. We are individuals whose differences are valued because they add to the rich fabric of the school and of this family we are creating.

High School students return to campus

As an educator and lifelong spiritual practitioner, I also habitually look for the lessons in even the most trying situations. 2020 taught me that even in the midst of great suffering, we are stronger and more resilient than we might think. It taught me to be humble in the face of adversity. It taught me to appreciate each day for its own unique blessings and gifts. Most importantly, it taught me that beyond all else, we can rely on each other, even if our connections seem more tenuous at times at a distance.

We are not yet not through either pandemic - the scourge of racism, in particular, will require humility and resilience for a long time to come. I have personally committed to doing whatever it takes to get us to being a

truly post-racist community, as many of you have too; it is that quality of unconditional commitment that gives our gatherings the true warmth of family.

When we look back at 2020 and the hardships, deprivations, and struggles that we and our loved ones faced, we can take comfort in knowing that we showed up for each other. We can find the gratitude and appreciation for those who, despite their own difficulties, found the time, energy, and strength to help those in need. The fear that may have overtaken us in the quiet of the night, was replaced in the clear morning light with the comfort of knowing there resides in our community those who genuinely care for us and our wellbeing. That is what family is all about.

A COMMUNITY OF STRENGTH While Campbell Hall started the 2020-21 school year in remote learning mode, we were able to continue athletic conditioning in grades 4-12, get students in grades K-3 onto campus for in-person instruction, and even host some middle school and high school bonding events during the fall. While we don’t know what the future will bring, Campbell Hall will continue to provide students with a robust academic program and find innovative ways to build and support our community.

HIGH SCHOOL ON-CAMPUS COMMUNITY EVENTS Before Thanksgiving break, high school students returned to campus for optional on-campus grade-level gatherings (masked and socially distanced). It was great to see returning students and welcome new students to our beautiful campus!

The College Counseling Office orchestrated connections between Campbell Hall seniors and university admissions representatives. In addition to Northeastern University, Whitman College, and Georgetown University (pictured here), approximately 100 universities visited Campbell Hall virtually during the fall.

CH College Counselor receives High Honors Campbell Hall College Counselor Elisa Sagardia was selected as a University of Chicago Outstanding Educator. Ms. Sagardia, along with the other 2020 winners, was presented with this prestigious honor in a virtual ceremony. Each year, newly admitted UChicago students have the opportunity to nominate a high school educator whom they feel has made a difference in their lives. Along with the nomination, students submit a written statement that explains how this educator helped shape their path and encouraged their growth. We are so proud of Ms. Sagardia for being such a positive, powerful force in the lives of so many CH students.

Friday the 13th was a lucky one when middle school students were invited for an optional on-campus outdoor community experience. 7th grade students met in the morning and 8th grade in the afternoon for small advisory group activities that included bingo, relay races, and other fun socially distanced bonding activities.

Q&A with Lawrence Jackson “Do you use natural lighting or do you edit the photos ?”

–Fiona J. ’25 I use natural lighting as much as possible. I can only lighten, darken, or crop an image – anything else would be manipulation of the photograph and would fall outside of the bounds of documentary photography.

Renowned Photographer Shares His Experiences and Iconic Images with the 8th Grade Photography Elective Class

“What was your favorite part of working for the President?”

–Oliver P. ’25 My favorite part was to be part of history and see it happen in front of me – to document what you hope will be cherished for decades to come. When I look at old pictures, I don’t think that the person who took that photo thought that 100 years later people would be looking at it. That’s what excites me and hopefully makes a difference.

“What is your favorite photograph that you ever took in the White House?” –Maddie E. ’25 My favorite photograph was of President Obama hugging a little girl, because it was a totally unexpected moment. The President was greeting people in the Oval House. She put her arms up like she wanted a hug. The look on her face seems to say “thank you.”

“What is your favorite story or moment behind one of the photos?” –Ella H. ’25 It was when the First Lady was celebrating at her surprise birthday party...she had no idea I was still in the room and she closes eyes to make a wish...she was just being her natural self.

“What advice would you give to young photographers?”

–Ms. Pilon I started taking pictures when I was in high school, just because I liked it. Back then we used a dark room. When you see the prints develop in front of you, it was magic. I was hooked. Anyone who feels that way about photography in your class, learn as much as you can, take as many pics as you can, and try as many different styles and mediums of photography as you can.

On January 6, 2021, the 8th grade photography elective class was treated to a special presentation by renowned photographer Lawrence Jackson. Mr. Jackson was an official White House photographer for all eight years of the Obama administration. It was, as he noted “a wonderful time to document history.”

As part of a team of five photographers and four editors, he helped capture more than 9.000 images a week. By the end of President Obama’s two terms, the team had entered more than 4.2 million images into the archives of the White House. In 2013, Mr. Jackson began freelancing and in 2019 he published a book of photographs and reflections titled Yes We Did: Photos and Behind-the-Scenes Stories Celebrating Our First African American President. He has been covering Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign and transition to the White House since August 2020.

REMOTE LEARNING EXPERIENCES + EVENTS

Mr. Jackson shared with the class that there are three key elements that he feels make up a great image: emotion, information, and aesthetics. The recipe for success is when a photo can convey a strong emotion and/or important information about an event or person in an aesthetically pleasing way. Mr. Jackson scrolled through his countless stunning images that captured both historic events, such as when the White House was lit up to emulate the rainbow flag to celebrate the landmark Supreme Court decision affirming same sex marriage, as well as more personal moments, such as President Obama deep in thought in the Oval Office.

One of the photos Mr. Jackson takes great pride in is not as visually striking as some of his other work. A group of men stand gathered around President Obama, his back to the camera. Yet, the story behind the image gives it tremendous weight. This picture, Mr. Jackson explained, is that of the national security team seeking authorization to pursue Osama Bin Laden. Mr. Jackson was only able to get this one frame before he was waved out of the room. The following evening, President Obama announced that Bin Laden had been killed in a nighttime raid where he had been hiding.

One of Mr. Jackson’s most popular and historic photos is that of the 50th anniversary of the march from Selma to Montgomery. President Obama and the first lady are flanked by the original freedom walkers on one side and their daughters on the other side. Mr. Jackson explained that, “without those people on the right, you wouldn’t have the people in the center and, without those people in the center, you wouldn’t have those people on the left.” We are the beneficiaries of the sacrifices of previous generations.

Visiting Artists Lecture Series Adds Micro-Residencies in Art Classes

The Visual Arts Department

launched a new visiting artists lecture series in the winter which will continue through the spring term. The program kicked off with an online exhibition that ran from November 15, 2020 - January 22, 2021 and featured five of the artists’ works including Brian Bress, Widline Cadet, Jonathan Chacón, Donté Hayes, and Rob Hult. The lecture series includes the exhibiting artists as well as Rebecca Campbell.

The new program is the brainchild of Visual Arts Department Chair and Photography teacher Katie Kline who had been looking to expand the existing visiting artist series to bring artists onto campus to work with the students as part of an in-class residency. An unlikely opportunity presented itself when, due to the pandemic, she was able to take advantage of the remote learning platform to bring artists into the classroom virtually. In this way, the department was able to expand the reach of the program to include artists from other parts of the country as well as to increase the number of invited artists.

“In addition to thinking about how we could make remote learning more dynamic for the students,” says Ms. Kline, “I was honestly thinking about the many artists I know who 22 campbell hall magazine I WINTER 2021

were out of work due to the pandemic. Exhibitions were being closed, postponed, and/or cancelled everywhere.

Budgets for art programs are being cut in schools. We’re in a position where we can support artists through these lectures and teaching residencies.”

Middle school and high school visual arts teachers were each able to select an artist who would work specifically with their classroom. The in-classroom work will run concurrently with a lecture series in which the artists will share insights into their work, their artistic processes, and problem-solving techniques.

Campbell Hall Art Gallery Director and Video Production/ Film History teacher Joe Sola chose to invite Brian Bress into his classroom because, as he says: “I’ve known his work for 15 years. His filmwork is often diaristic and pushes a lot of boundaries between drawing and painting. It can be humorous and can sometimes discuss cartoonish violence in popular culture. I thought it would be really interesting to see what his interests are as an artist, how he talks about his own work, and what kinds of assignments he would give to young filmmakers. I think the simplicity of his work will be easily conveyed to the students.”

Mr. Bress will teach a lesson and give an assignment to the students in Mr. Sola’s video and advanced video production classes that reflects his ideas in culture and his interests in the moving image. He’ll then critique with the students how they handled the exercises.

Visual Arts teacher Donna Chung explains why she chose to invite Rob Hult: “I chose Rob because he is basically a triple threat – a working artist, gallerist, and teacher. He makes these incredibly focused and intricate time consuming drawings that I think are both accessible to a wide audience and technically and conceptually rigorous. He also co-owns and directs a gallery that’s been exhibiting for 17 years in New York City, starting very young, which is its own huge endeavor. And on top of that, he also teaches at the college level. So Campbell Hall students will hopefully connect with and ask questions of someone who has a multitude of perspectives. I also work with the entire range of secondary and I think Rob is going to enjoy working with students from middle to high school.”

new perspective on how to be an artist and how to be a problem solver,” says Mr. Sola. “It’s an incredible opportunity to see what critical thought looks like from different points of view and to have another set of voices in the classroom.”

Ms. Kline adds: “In bringing artists to my classroom, I always hope that some of my students will be able to see themselves in the future. This is a possible path. I also think it is important for students to gain feedback about their work from another teaching artist. I worry sometimes that I am the only critical and supportive voice they will hear from. It’s always helpful to be seen and heard by more than one person.”

If deemed successful, it is hoped that this new lecture series, where artists visit art classrooms, will continue once we resume in-person learning. “I hope that students will gain a

Creative Writing Speaker Series Launched

In the works are visits from CH alums Kaylee Chow ’19, Brenne Hoeven ’19, Rose Hoffman ’16, Molly Kirschenbaum ’16, and Nicholas McCarthy ’16, as well as sessions with several current best-selling authors whose names we will reveal once details are finalized.

Beginning in October, the Literary Publications team and I organized a virtual monthly speaker series for students in the Creative Writing Program that has proven so popular and galvanizing that it is likely to continue long after we return to in-person learning.

Guests so far have included alumni Teddy Corday ’19 and Antonio Stefan ’19 (both Campbell Hall Creative Writing Fellows), who shared their experiences in college writing classes and in the professional creative world since leaving CH, as well as screenwriter/novelist Peter Atkins and the celebrated Canadian novelist, food writer, journalist, and University of British Columbia professor Timothy Taylor.

CH Alumna Shares Unique Science Field with Girls in STEM Club Co-presidents of the Girls in STEM Club Delia R. ’21, Ann N. ’21 and Chloe C. ’22 hosted a virtual presentation by Director of Global Flavor Development at Coca Cola Ashaki Wilham ’91 on December 17, 2020.

Ashaki’s presentation outlined the overarching career of food science in which her speciality, flavor chemistry, sits. Food science is the discipline in which biology, physical sciences, and engineering are used to study the nature of foods, the causes of their deterioration, and the principles underlying food processing. Ashaki shared fun facts about food, including that chemicals make up the flavors that are inherent even in natural foods like fruit, the chemistry of which changes as it ripens.

Attending members of the Girls in Stem Club asked insightful questions such as: “Can you be a flavor specialist if you have food allergies?” The answer is yes!

This is why teamwork is so critical to the role. Your teammates can taste your creations for you. Another member asked, “What is the female to male ratio in your industry?” The answer: “In general there is a huge gender disparity in STEM careers with men greatly outnumbering women and flavor chemistry is no different.”

Ashaki’s inspirational talk to these motivated young women could help change that!

With only 500 certified flavor specialists in the country, Ashaki’s unique field utilizes a mixture of art and science in order to develop flavors. She explained that not only do you need a great sense of taste and smell to do this work, there are a number of skills and qualities that are needed to become a successful flavor specialist. Patience is not only a virtue, but a necessity as the work can be iterative - creating and testing multiple prototypes over and over. Teamwork is also a key ingredient because it is essential to incorporate different perspectives to create a flavor that is well-liked by the masses.

Ashaki's love of STEM was first ignited by her Campbell Hall Biology teacher in high school who inspired her to pursue the sciences. Ashaki went on to receive a B.S. in Biology from Vanderbilt University and has been working in the sciences ever since.

NBA player Jrue Holiday ’08 gave over two hours of his time to speak with the Varsity boys’ basketball

team and CH coaches. He shared his experiences as a Campbell Hall player and student, gave advice about the game, provided some insight into his own personal growth and work ethic, and thoughtfully answered students’ questions. Coach Tolbert ’05, Jrue’s teammate in high school, moderated the virtual event and also shared his own memories of the CH basketball team that he and Jrue helped to win the State Championship in 2005. Co-captain of the current CH Varsity boys’ basketball team Will I. ’21 expressed his gratitude for the visit: “It was a great experience and an honor to have Jrue speak to our basketball team. As a basketball player and a person, something I found most valuable from Jrue’s visit was his competitive nature and his mentality. Jrue explained to us that he tries to be the best at anything he does. He always has an extra motivation or takes stuff to heart. This mentality allows him to be the best version of himself every day. As a basketball player I learned that in every drill, practice, and game I need to have this mindset to perform at my best.”

Ryan discussed what he’s been up to since graduating from the University of Oregon, working for the Biden campaign, and what some of his takeaways were from his four years in Bruns’ class. Ryan also performed a solo for the students on a Pandeiro (Brazilian tambourine) and taught a new rhythm to play.

CH alumna Lindy McMorran ’06, licensed veterinary technician and research scientist at the University of Washington, shared her science career journey and marine biology research experiences with high school students as a guest speaker in Dr. Dominguez’s

Award-Winning author Robin Benway discussed her book Far From The Tree and held a Q&A with students in the accelerated

8th grade English class. The students had just finished reading the book, which won the National Book Award for YA literature in 2017.

#USvsHATE Congratulations to Valeria B. ’21 and Anya R. ’21 who were selected as national winners in #USvsHate challenge to create public anti-hate messages. #USvsHate is a Teaching Tolerance program aimed at improving the nation’s social climate through embracing inclusion and justice in our diverse schools and society.

In the spring of 2020, High School English teacher Carlos Castellanos taught the #USvsHate unit in his 11th grade English class as part of a broader social justice curriculum.

n March 2020 our school made the difficult decision to switch to remote learning in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Teachers were asked to reevaluate their curriculum and make necessary adjustments to accommodate our new learning model. With so much going on in the world, I thought it would be a good idea to implement #USvsHate as the final project for 11th grade English class. It was the best decision I could have made for my students and for me.

poem “Where Is My Country?” by Nellie Wong, “Grandmother’s Tongue: Inheritance’’ by Leah Huizar, and Zora Neal Hurston’s short story “How It Feels to Be Colored Me.” Halfway through our #USvsHate unit, we learned about the unfortunate deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and George Floyd. We also learned about the incident with Christian Cooper in Central Park. As such, we were able to witness injustices toward the Black community unfolding right before us. We were able to make real-time connections to the material we were learning, which on the one hand left us feeling heavy after many class discussions, but on the other made our mission with #USvsHate that much more timely and valuable.

Our unit began with an exploration of how language surrounding the virus was starting to affect the way Asians (specifically Chinese people) were being perceived in the US. I used the lesson “Identity and Labels” from facinghistory.org, the article “Coronavirus: Sinophobia” from the AntiDefamation League (ADL), and a short video from the NY Times titled “A Conversation with Asian-Americans on Race.” We used these to frame conversations about how the language used to talk about Coronavirus by the president and social media was starting to negatively impact our communities.

On the last day of school, students presented their anti-hate messages, and I was overwhelmed with pride by what they had produced. I’m grateful to #USvsHate for providing the platform and resources to do this work. Because of #USvsHate, my students will be able to look back at these times and know that they created some positivity and light in the world when it needed it most.

We then continued our exploration of social justice learning through the use of various lessons from ADL (such as “The Pyramid of Hate” and “Swastikas and Other Hate Symbols”), as well as a variety of other videos from the NY Times’ “26 MiniFilms for Exploring Race, Bias, and Identity with Students.” I also supplemented these with some literary texts, such as the

the lives they want and choose to. People shouldn’t change who they are just because society and beauty standards say that it’s “wrong” or “frowned upon.” These are set by implicit biases against race, size, gender, etc. and these “expectations” are encouraged. Different is considered “ugly.”

Our future as a society will become more aware and accepting once hate within oneself is shut down.

Being a plus sized Latina in America, I face judgement all the time. By what I see in the media and all over, my own experience is one of millions around the world that suffer from the hatred/ judgement women and men face for their outward appearance. I feel and believe wholeheartedly that we need to break away from that toxic and negative way of thinking and just let people live

Things have been this way for centuries and we need to be the generation that stops this cycle of self hate that comes from the idea that what we look like matters more than the content of our souls and characters. Beautiful is whatever you make it, not what others say it has to be.

Write your own narrative and make sure that you blossom into the person you want to be in this world. Everyone is beautiful in their own ways, and once that’s realized you will hold the strongest form of magic in the world, love.

That feeling will be felt towards yourself, and then can be spread around because it’s such a powerful force.

edged. Damaging stereotypes such as the model minority myth have caused Asian American struggles to be invalidated and unnoticed. Chinese Americans have historically struggled for their place in society ever since the Chinese Exclusion Act which was written to prevent Chinese Americans from succeeding.

The anti-Chinese hate sentiment has since then continued to grow and is still reflected in modern day society. Because Asians are socially viewed as a “fake” minority, due to the model minority myth, the racism the community is currently facing is downplayed and not taken seriously. Growing up as a mixed Chinese and White individual, I have been able to see both sides of the community. The Chinese in my blood will always be seen as impurifying my Whiteness and our society has stripped me of having a mixed identity. As a mixed White and Chinese American, I have seen how ignorantly embedded Asian American hate is in our society and its values.

Many young Chinese-Americans experience similar childhoods as I did.

Awareness about Chinese-American racism is rarely taught in school and this is harmful towards the development of future generations. I wanted to write a poem that would reflect the feelings I could not put into words as a young child who was confused with and ashamed of her identity. As Chinese American oppression continues to be erased, and racism continues to spread, I have a responsibility to my community to use my voice and express the struggles the community faces.

We seek to build and support an open community that is dedicated to the principle of respect and that honors the diversity of the human experience. We are committed to confronting racism, bigotry, and bias in all its forms and ensuring that every community member feels safe, accepted, seen, and heard. We will continue to create intentional spaces for learning, reflection, and courageous conversations.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION (DEI) TASK FORCE The Board formed an independent task force to comprehensively examine the status of Campbell Hall’s DEI efforts. The task force will reaffirm and strengthen our commitment to creating an anti-racist community in which DEI is seen, heard, and felt through every aspect of school life.

DEI EXECUTIVE LEVEL POSITION Campbell Hall has launched a search for a newly created top executive level position that will inspire and drive the school’s broader strategy for community engagement and diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice work. The Associate Head of Community Engagement, reporting directly to Head of School Julian Bull, will influence faculty recruiting, hiring and retention; internal and external communications; admissions; and student and staff policies (including conduct, grievance, performance, assessment, etc.). This position will oversee the DEIJ aspect in the school’s strategic plan, working with other school leaders to achieve and communicate the school’s strategic goals, success, and areas for growth regarding the school’s commitments to all identities, including and particularly those related to race, gender/gender identity, sexual orientation, level of ability, socioeconomic differences, and other under-represented and/or marginalized communities. In addition, the Associate Head of Community Engagement will oversee curriculum review and development, including working with the chairs of human development, history, English, and all departments on curriculum and provide mentorship and support for faculty and staff to build cultural awareness of and sophistication in engaging with the identities mentioned above.

THE RABEN GROUP Campbell Hall contracted with The Raben Group, an independent, external advisor, to conduct a comprehensive audit of school culture, policies, and practices in order to help develop and implement clear DEI strategies. As part of their research, the Raben Group has reached out to CH stakeholders including parents, students, alumni, board members, faculty and staff to solicit feedback and input.

K-12 CURRICULAR REVIEW Curriculum consultant, Emily Chiariello of Education for the Good, is working with faculty teams throughout the year in all three divisions to engage in a curriculum inquiry and revision process that results in specific improvements to existing curriculum, Grades K-12, in alignment with anti-bias education goals.

Jenifer Chatfield The Rev. Jenifer Chatfield (Kaelyn ’27) serves as Rector of St. Edmund's Episcopal Church and Preschool in San Marino. She has recently served on the Executive Board of Holy Family Services, an institution of the Diocese of Los Angeles which offers affordable adoption services and foster care opportunities for children and families and has served on the boards for other Episcopal schools in the Diocese. Jenifer is an active member of Campbell Hall’s Religious Life Committee.

Theresa Cross Theresa (Xander ’27) is a North America Strategist for Netflix Original Films. Prior to Netflix, she was the V.P. of Marketing Strategy and Communications for Disney Motion Picture Marketing. She has also worked as V.P. of Strategy for 20th Century Fox Films, and as Executive Director, Marketing for Gold Circle Films. Theresa also serves on the school’s Communications Committee.

Lisa Johnson Lisa (Gigi ’27 and Avery ’30) is the founder of Private School Village, a nonprofit that builds community by organizing social events, sharing resources, and providing support and programming for Black families in independent/private schools (K-12). She is also a cocreator of the Campbell Hall Elementary Diversity and Inclusion Fund (EDIF), a parent-led and supported financial aid program designed to increase racial diversity in the elementary school. Lisa serves as a member of the school’s new Board level DEI Task Force.

Terra Potts Terra (Madeline ’28) is the Senior Vice President of Marketing at Warner Bros. Pictures where, over the course of her tenure, she has transformed the niche area of targeted and multicultural marketing and publicity into a top studio priority, evolving the department, and her position, into one focused on inclusivity, social impact and innovative, synergistic strategies. Terra also serves on Campbell Hall’s Board level DEI Task Force and the school’s Communications Committee.

Liberty Ross Liberty (Skyla ’23 and Sonny) and her husband Jimmy have been involved in a number of COVID-19 related charities since the onset of the pandemic, including The COVID Retraining and Recovery (CORE) Fund which will provide up to 200 scholarships to South LA Residents that have been laid-off or furloughed due to COVID-19 and support for the city of Compton to provide medical supplies, free COVID-19 testing, and meals for residents.

Campbell Hall’s Family Affinity Organizations are an integral part of our community life. The groups were formed based on parent interest and are open to all K-12 families.

Campbell Hall is also open to supporting other organizations families may be interested in starting.

Black Heritage Families: Founded in 1996, The Black Heritage Families is Campbell Hall’s oldest affinity group and connects Black families across all grade levels in addition to providing support and guidance on the school’s DEI programs and initiatives.

Korean Parents Association: The Korean Parent Association was established in 2013 and connects Korean families at CH.

White Anti-Racist Affinity Space: Intended for students who can say, “I identify as White or have European ancestry.”

Let’s Talk About Race Space: Intended for students who are saying, “I am uncertain about which racial affinity space to identify with” and/or “I want to know more about racial affinity spaces.”

NEW FACULTY/STAFF AFFINITY SPACE Led by Music History teacher and Middle School DEI Coordinator Erik Koski, the LGBTQ+ Faculty and Staff Affinity Group held its inaugural meeting on Oct 15. The group strives to be a place for queer faculty and staff to get to know one another, share stories, and provide support.

FACULTY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

La Familia: Founded in 2009, La Familia, Campbell Hall’s K-12 organization for Latino/Hispanic families, aims to support school programming that increases cultural awareness of Latino/Hispanic heritage while also creating opportunities for families of Latino/Hispanic heritage to connect and foster unity within the school community.

This past summer, K-12 faculty took part in a host of different workshops and seminars that focused on deepening understanding about systemic racial injustices, equipping educators with tools for anti-racist teaching, and ways in which we can collectively move toward racial equality. In addition:

Parents for Pride: Parents for Pride was founded in December 2019 to support and affirm members of the LGBTQ community within Campbell Hall. This K-12 family affinity group connects all parents and students who identify with and are connected to the LGBTQ community and serves as a safe place for families to discuss issues unique to the LGBTQ experience.

Campbell Hall Inclusion Institute This semester, 20 faculty and staff members are participating in the school-year online Inclusion Institute facilitated by the DEI Leadership Team. The goal of the program is to build and support an inclusive community dedicated to the principle of respect. The Inclusion Institute allows us to create a common language and a set of mental models to increase educators’ ability to see the often invisible systems of power and privilege that operate on both personal and institutional levels.

NEW ELEMENTARY AFFINITY SPACES Dr. Elizabeth Denevi, who works with schools nationally to increase equity, promote diversity pedagogy, and implement strategic processes for growth and development, held a virtual elementary parent education event on October 13 to discuss the “why’s” of affinity spaces with our elementary school families and to help us identify what our own student affinity spaces might look like. The first elementary school affinity spaces were held during Community Connections time on Friday, October 16 and included: Students of Color Affinity Space: Intended for students who can say, “I am a Person of Color; my heritage may include: Black, African Heritage; Asian, Asian Pacific Islander Heritage; First Nations Heritage; Greater Middle Eastern Heritage; Latina/o/x Heritage; Multiracial Heritage.”

SEED (Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity), a monthly three-hour seminar that consists of experiential, interactive exercises and conversations on selected diversity and inclusion topics, will continue to be offered for faculty and staff at both the beginning level and a more advanced level for those who would like to deepen the work they began in their original SEED session.

ALUMNI AFFINITY + SOCIAL JUSTICE ORGANIZATIONS Alumni for Action: Alumni for Action was established through a shared passion to disrupt racism, systemic oppression, and a desire to create a more just and equitable community at Campbell Hall.

Black Alumni Collective: The Campbell Hall Black Alumni Collective was established in 2019 with the mission to foster a sense of community that allows Black students to achieve their full potential throughout their tenure at Campbell Hall while also continuing the connection among Black alumni to their alma mater.

First Gen: First generation college students provide mentorship and support to current CH high school students who will also be the first in their families to attend college.

PARENT EDUCATION Mothering, Reimagining & Starfishing: A Radical Way Forward Activist Jodie Patterson introduced the concept of front-loading Mothering as a proactive strategy for building better, stronger, more cohesive communities. Jodie Patterson is a mother of five, author of The Bold World: A Memoir of Family and Transformation, and a globally recognized LGBTQIA activist.

Recognizing Racism and Teaching Children to be Anti-racist Dr. Erlander Turner, PhD explored the psychological impacts of racism and helped parents identify ways to teach children to be anti-racist. He also provided resources for having healthy conversations about race.

Breaking Hate: Confronting the New Culture of Extremism Christian Picciolini discussed his emotional drift from his loving family, his recruitment and rapid rise into the leadership of the early American white-power skinhead movement, as well as his exit from hate and atonement.

Speech & Debate Captains on Global Stage ampbell Hall is the first high school in the country to produce two captains of the USA Debate team.

Current student Liana S. ’21 and alumnus Milan Amritraj ’16, were selected in their respective senior years to serve in this role, in addition to being named as Campbell Hall’s team captain. Each year, the National Speech and Debate Association team selects just twelve students from around the country to represent the United States on the global stage.

Campbell Hall’s speech and debate program, headed by Susan Foley for the last nine years, teaches students to think critically as well as develop research and organizational skills.

More importantly, it allows students the opportunity to consider the viewpoints, experiences, and ideologies of others. Through this activity, students learn and grow academically and personally. “It has been an exercise in empathy more than anything else,” notes Liana. “If you have principles and values that you are trying to defend, debate gives you the skills to advocate for those views but it also allows you insight into other people’s perspectives… You learn how to think about all the different possible elements of the argument and then figure out how to marry the intellectual part of it with your personal belief, navigating the complexities of issues.”

Milan echoes this sentiment: “Speech and debate does not push you to either side of the political spectrum.

By dint of the activity, you have to argue both sides, so what it teaches you is to respect any idea that is put before you and to really engage with it. The more

you engage with different ideas and the more you’re willing to consider others’ opinions, the better served you are in terms of developing your own political compass.”

Engaging in speech and debate has also helped Liana gain a deeper understanding of our nation’s history and how it relates to our place in the world. “Politically, it’s made me appreciate the importance of a consistent commitment to civic participation,” she explains. “Debating [teams from] older countries with even more tumultuous histories than ours has taught me to reinforce those principles and live them out in order to make them successful.”

Some debate formats offer students little time to prepare while others provide lead time to allow students the opportunity to research forthcoming topics. The team works both individually and together to delve into topics and to gain a breadth of knowledge about key subjects from economic systems to political structures. Liana explains: “It’s a reasonable person’s debate. You don’t have to be an expert on any topic, but you just need to have a general framework for understanding the world.” There is a lot of support for the students in this endeavor from Ms. Foley’s expert tutelage to a strong CH alumni network of past debaters who provide valuable insight and helpful tips.

In addition to the strong friendships built with CH team members, Liana and Milan were also able to forge deeply personal connections with students on the USA Debate team as well as with some of the international students against whom they competed. “The reason why you make such close

friendships, particularly with people from across the world engaged in this activity,” Milan says, “is that in the process of arguing, you start to detect presuppositions in terms of how people come up with their arguments. I think the better you get at debate, the better you are at recognizing the life experiences that people are bringing into rounds.

It’s an incredible bonding experience.” Liana notes: “We’re able to stay connected with people we’ve met from around the world and discuss global issues outside of the parameters of a debate tournament.”

At the core of speech and debate is the notion that through cultivating civil discourse among young people, positive change can be effected both locally and globally. “Discourse is often the best way to resolve the problems we have as a world.” says Milan. It is, as Ms. Foley notes, “...the marketplace of ideas.” She adds: “I recently heard someone observe that ‘Civilization rests on a series of successful conversations.’ In my mind, speech and debate is about learning how to have these successful conversations; it is also in this sense that the activity complements and reinforces the Harkness, conversationally-driven pedagogy at CH and the community of inquiry model generally.

Being able to productively engage the cultural, political, and religious other is a critical skill in our globalized—and increasingly polarized— world.”

As both an active participant on the CH speech and debate team for five years during his tenure as a student and as the assistant coach since his graduation four years ago, Milan has had a unique vantage point from which to view and also to help shape the growth of the program. “Over the last few years, it has been the fulfillment of a dream to see how the team has developed. We are now a 30-person deep squad that engages in the gamut of events under the guidance of a fantastic coach.” Ms. Foley adds: “CH competitors now regularly qualify to compete at the state championship, the national championship, and the tournament of champions.”

Ms. Foley encourages students of all interest and commitment levels to join the speech and debate team. “As the students will tell you,” she says, “I’m not particularly invested in whether the team or individual competitors score trophies; I’m far more concerned that everyone does their best and achieves to potential. Even a little speech and debate goes a long way, so to speak, and I welcome the ‘part-timers’ as much as the ‘all-ins.’”

Liana will be attending Yale University in fall 2021. Milan is a graduate of USC and will be attending UCLA Law School in fall 2021.

What was your most memorable round?

Liana S. ‘21 Last year, I was competing on the U.S. national team in Hamburg, Germany, at the European Open. Our team advanced to the final round, and we were competing against the national team of China in an auditorium that was about 50km from the dividing line from East and West Germany on the anniversary of when the Wall came down. The motion of the topic of debate was, “This house regrets German unification.” The U.S. team was on the proposition, so we had to defend this motion in front of German diplomats who had come to watch the debate. Personally, I didn’t feel comfortable doing this. My grandfather was almost trapped in East Germany when the Berlin Wall first went up.

This is a testament to the way in which debate challenges people. I knew it was an important exercise because whether or not the proposition is true, it’s more about imagining the alternate courses of history.

Milan Amritraj ’16 During my first international tournament on the USA Debate team, we competed at the European Open in Stuttgart, Germany. It was the quarter final round against the Pakistani team. The topic of the round was, “Judges should take into consideration the views of victims and their families when passing criminal sentencing.” It was a really difficult round and we got beaten handily by Team Pakistan. What it ultimately came down to was that this was a topic that did not play to the strengths of U.S. debaters, or to my strengths personally. In U.S. debate, you’re taught to deal with really consequential topics with relatively diffuse impact, like nuclear war. In international debate, you’re dealing with more personal topics that mean a lot to people, like the death of a loved one. And that was the thing that was in conflict. The U.S. team approached this topic from a more distant perspective in terms of the spirit of the law and the philosophy behind justice. The Pakistani team captain gave a really heartfelt story about his father who was killed in a drunk driving accident and how that informs the way he views the law. That emotion is really justified in being viewed in sentencing decisions.

Pakistan won that round in a 5-0 decision. Even if I were on the panel, I would have voted for them. It was a real learning experience because going forward, whether it was in debate or in my experience in jobs in finance or law, it was a reminder to never forget the human dimension. Hard data and facts don’t mean anything unless you phrase it in relational terms.

High School Mental Health Education Club

Co-founders of the high school Mental Health Education Club Camden A. ’23 and Sara M. ’23 hosted a virtual session with Dr. Casey Weinstein, a licensed Marriage and Family therapist. Camden notes: “There is a stigma around mental health as well as talking about it. Our main purpose in starting this club is to normalize it and let other students know that it’s okay to not be okay, especially in these times.” Open to students, parents, faculty and staff, Dr. Weinstein addressed many concerns about how teenagers are coping with the pandemic. When asked what she hopes students took away from the virtual session on mental health, co-founder Sara answered: “I hope that students gain knowledge, to know that it’s a real thing and with that knowledge we know how to best approach it. For those who may struggle with their mental health, I want them to know that they’re not alone and Camden A. Sara M. there is help out there.”

Here’s our Q&A with Dr. Weinstein:

What are some common things you are seeing that teenagers are struggling with?

What are some good ways to stay motivated during virtual school?

Remote learning is always on the table because it is so new and different. People are feeling lonely and isolated and really overwhelmed. None of us are supposed to be home with our families 24/7 - many are struggling with how to make this work without compromising our relationships. So we have to give ourselves a little more understanding. I’m so impressed with how students have adapted. You are allowed to not be okay and to have a bad day. But if you lash out, then you have to own it.

The first step is to recognize that this is one of the hardest things that students your age have had to adapt to and overcome.

Some days are going to be harder than others. The best thing to do is to get up and get out of your seat. It’s hard for people to sit in front of a screen all day. Take breaks when you can and find other spaces to work in just to keep that motivation you need.

How should we tackle anxiety and stress differently?

Before the pandemic, there was an entire day of school to distract you from those feelings of anxiety like seeing friends during lunch or in your classes. Now, everyone has more time to sit with those feelings. You have to ask yourself, “what am I doing when I feel overwhelmed and is it working?” and “How do I use the tools I used before the pandemic?” You have to give yourself a break and pivot a little differently.

What are some good coping mechanisms?

One of the main things I tell clients is that you should find time to be active. There is a lot of energy pent up by sitting all day.

You have to find a way to get out some of that energy. In addition, make sure you are getting good sleep, have a routine during the week, and are eating well. Anything beyond that is personal to who you are as a person—whether through art, sports, journaling—find what you like to do and try to make it a routine as part of your coping skills.

Can you go over social media guidelines use during this time?

I see many people fall into social media as a distraction. This can be adding toxicity to an already difficult situation because you can compare yourself to other people instead of doing things to better yourself. If you are having days that are really hard where anxiety is out of control, ask yourself if social media is really serving you? What does Instagram do for you? Examine what’s working and what’s not working. It’s also a good idea to get off social media an hour before you go to sleep - anxiety goes down just with that shift.

From a parent’s perspective, what are behaviors or situations that should be red flags?

Parents know their kids best, so trust yourself if something feels different or off. Have that check-in moment with them when you are noticing that they are down or feeling sad. Everybody’s anxiety and sadness is at an all-time high, but on the other hand we have to keep that line of communication open. If it feels like something is off, maybe it’s time to think about seeing someone.

In the early days of quarantine, the Getty Museum created the hashtag #gettymuseumchallenge and encouraged people to choose a piece of art from their collection to recreate at home. It soon went viral! Over the last several weeks multiple elementary grade levels had an opportunity to participate within our CH community as a photography art project during remote learning.

This year’s Hillsides gift giving season was as special as ever with a virtual toy drive. The children of Hillsides created an Amazon wish list for easy virtual giving this year.

Thanks to our generous community, the 2020 Outreach Gift Fair Holiday Market raised more than $25,000 for a variety of organizations including training of a guide dog for the visually impaired, support for the North Hollywood Interfaith Food Pantry, and library supplies for Hillsides Homes for Children in Pasadena.

These meaningful gifts were made in honor of friends, family, colleagues, and teachers!

Thank you to our generous Campbell Hall faculty and staff who donated unwrapped gifts for children in need across the San Fernando Valley in conjunction with the Studio City Neighborhood Council and Paul Krekorian. The masks were incorporated into “care kits” which also included toiletry items and food for distribution to unhoused neighbors in need.

Inspired by participating in Campbell Hall’s CREW public partnership program, Amanda S. ’21 recently started “Laptops with Love,” a program to collect used computers and donate to children in need of computers for online schooling. SENIOR KEY CELEBRATION It was all hands (and masks) on deck as we honored the Class of 2021 with a special Senior Key on campus drive thru celebration! Seniors received their senior keys (a long-standing CH tradition) and were greeted by the applause of faculty and staff. The seniors also participated in a virtual Senior Key Chapel featuring student speakers and musical performances.

APPLE CHAPEL Giving an apple to a teacher is an age-old tradition, but here at Campbell Hall, it is a yearly high school tradition for teachers to give students an apple as a token of appreciation. This year, CH faculty were especially thankful for our amazing students. Seniors were given apple stress balls at their on-campus community event in November.

COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS As part of the Parents’ Association Community Building Committee, 28 parents, grandparents, and faculty gathered online on December 3, 2020 for Campbell Hall’s first-ever VIRTUAL BOOK CLUB. Attendees enjoyed a live interview with Amaryllis Fox, author of Life Undercover: Coming of Age in the CIA, a riveting account of the decade the author spent risking her life in the CIA’s most clandestine unit. This was followed by an informal discussion about the book. We’d like to extend a special thanks to CH parent Michelle Walter (Avery ’24) for bringing this opportunity to Campbell Hall. The feedback about the event was overwhelmingly positive: “Tonight was wonderful! Amaryllis is absolutely extraordinary. What a gift tonight was to hear her speak.” (CH parent Gloria Johnson, Fiona ’25). “Really, really fascinating to hear about some of the author’s life adventures and time at The Farm.” (CH staff member Gwen Greenwald). “It was such a great read and wonderful to hear Amaryllis talk about her experience.” (CH parent Chari Jalali, Maximos ’23)

GINGERBREAD HOUSE + HOLIDAY TREAT DECORATING PARTY On December 13, 2020, more than two dozen elementary school students joined a virtual decorating party to get in the holiday spirit!

They met up with their pals online to enjoy some time together as they slathered icing and toppings on gingerbread houses, gingerbread men, and holiday cookies.

good times CH x QUARANTUNES: A VIRTUAL HOMECOMING EVENT

Though the CH community could not gather together in person to enjoy the usual festivities of the Homecoming Carnival, we came together virtually to celebrate our school spirit. On October 3, 2020, Demi W. ’21 and her dad Richard brought their popular #RWQuarantunes concert series to Campbell Hall. CH x Quarantunes featured the artistic talents of students, faculty, parents, and special guests, while honoring the Class of 2021 and our student athletes. In addition, the community gave just over $180,000 for Campbell Hall’s Public Partnership Programs, which, for more than 14 years, have extended amazing educational opportunities to young people throughout our region.

FAMILY AFFINITY EVENTS

Celebrating Culture + Community

BLACK HERITAGE FAMILIES gathered in September for an evening of back-to school fun led by MC and CH parent Bill Bellamy who challenged participants with CH Trivia. In December, the group held a holiday event that included music from DJ Goodwill, a family ugly sweater contest, a Zoom Room decorating contest, and a holiday gift drive-through.

The KOREAN PARENT ASSOCIATION (KPA) met on September 19 to connect with each other and preview upcoming events.

LA FAMILIA joined together virtually in September to celebrate the CH Latin community and kick off the start of another great school year. In October, La Familia hosted a virtual Dia de los Muertos event with face painting, paper flower making, cookie decorating, and a game of Loteria! In December, La Familia hosted a virtual Las Posadas event with activities that included a trivia game, a scavenger hunt, storytelling, paper crafts, and cookie decorating.

PARENTS FOR PRIDE welcomed families to the new school year with a fun and lively Breakfast Bingo event! The group donated prize money from the Bingo wins ($100) to The Trevor Project, the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LGBTQ young people under 25.

“Insider” JJ H. ’22 is a contributing author for the LA Times High School Insider, Student Appointed an online publication that allows students to share stories about issues that are important to them. HS Insider hopes that through this medium they will encourage and empower “a generation of young people to actively seek out, engage in and support a productive public discourse that will create a better future for us all.”

In July 2020, JJ published his first article “COVID-19 and California’s prisons” which outlined the health and safety issues faced by inmates in our state prison system during the pandemic. He has continued to publish journalistic pieces on a monthly basis ranging from an in-depth look at one man’s fight to free his wrongfully convicted friend to opinion pieces about Disneyland and TV commercials to more personal stories about the loss of a beloved pet and dropping his brother off at college during COVID. JJ notes: “Being a contributing author for the LA Times HS Insider has been important to help develop my writing by allowing me to express more of my personal stories with other high schoolers from around the Los Angeles area.

I enjoy writing for them, as I can write without a word limit and talk about a wide variety of topics...I've attended workshops with some people on the LA Times staff and learned many things, including how to find a story, which is one of the most difficult parts of journalism.”

When asked how he first became interested in participating in the publication, JJ recounts: “I remember finding it a few years ago, and saw that only one person from Campbell Hall had their piece published (which was a couple years before I found it). I researched the publication and, after taking a class with The School of the New York Times, my instructor encouraged everyone to publish their pieces. I remembered HS Insider and decided that publishing these pieces there would be a good way to start writing for them.”

In addition to serving as a writer and junior editor for Campbell Hall’s school newspaper, The Piper, JJ is also the President of the Kiva Club, a micro-lending worldwide organization, and runs on the cross country and track and field teams.

to Local Government Matlock G. ’22, who has been a part of the Los Feliz Neighborhood Council (LFNT) since he was 11 years old, was recently appointed as a Youth representative to the Governing Board. He was featured in the Los Feliz Ledger, sharing his perspective on a number of topics. He cochairs the Transportation & Mobility Committee of the LFNT which monitors the transportation infrastructure and helps to ensure the safe and efficient flow of traffic.

He joined this committee because, as he states in the article, “I had always been interested in bicycling and advocating for cyclists’ rights...”

We are so proud of Matlock for his work to make our community a better place. As he puts it, “It’s sort of very inspiring to see one person or a group of people make such a huge difference.”

Student Work Published in

New York Times Anthology Lila M.’23

In the spring of 2019 when was in 8th grade, she was selected as one of twenty-seven runners-up in The New York Times Annual Student Editorial Contest out of more than 10,500 submissions. Each year, the contest challenges students aged 13-19 to make a persuasive argument in 450 words or fewer on a topic that is meaningful to them. At just 14 years old, Lila was one of the youngest to be honored with her essay titled “China: It’s Time to Meet Your Daughters.”

Now, Lila’s winning essay appears in a new collection curated

by The New York Times titled Student Voice: 100 Argument Essays by Teens on Issues That Matter to Them. Her work was selected from among the previous five years’ essays (totalling more than 43,000 submissions) and she was one of only nine students to be interviewed by the author for the book. Of the compilation of work, Lila says, “It was nice to see what other students were writing about and how they approached the contest. Everyone has a different take on the world and their own unique writing styles.”

Lila’s editorial focuses on China’s one-child policy which was implemented over the span of more than thirty-five years and its impact on generations of families. The policy not only prevented millions of births but, as Lila writes, “given the cultural preference for male children,” forced the abandonment of thousands of girls. In her very personal essay, Lila explains that she was one of these children “who ended up in an orphanage, ultimately adopted to be raised in America.”

Lila attributes much of her success in the contest to Campbell Hall’s middle school teachers who helped her explore various genres and develop her own voice. She says: “In Ms. Stockton’s 7th grade English class, we were introduced to so many different forms of literature – an autobiography, a play, a graphic novel, a classic. We got to see different writing styles and to learn more about why the authors wrote what they did. In Mr. Turner’s 8th grade English class we wrote poetry, editorials, narratives, journals – he just had us writing constantly. One thing that stood out was that we had to write a 100-word memoir. We learned the importance of quality over quantity. We had to be efficient with our words.

In Ms. Pilon’s Social Justice for a Changing World, I learned about speech writing - making a claim and then backing up that claim. I learned how to make what you’re saying matter to someone else.”

Lila’s writing process for the contest employed passionately conveying her feelings while also making a persuasive argument. “I tried to take a political topic and personalize it,” she says. “It was important that it was not just all opinions, but that I found the balance between political and personal.”

The Piper 2019-20 Editorial Board

The Piper Wins Again!

For the third consecutive year, Campbell Hall’s student-run newspaper The Piper has been named a national Crown winner by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA). The CSPA Crown competition is one of the most selective in the country and winners are selected for overall excellence in a head-to-head comparison. This year, a total of 849 publications were eligible for a Crown Award from which 15 print newspapers were chosen as Finalists. Publications were judged on overall excellence demonstrated in writing and reporting, coverage, design, and photography by a panel of scholastic and media professionals.

amala Harris is a woman of firsts: the first Black woman to be elected district attorney in San Francisco, the first Black and first Asian American to serve as the attorney general of California and the first woman elected to serve as the Vice President.

The new Vice President Elect has torn through almost every glass ceiling she’s encountered. Throughout her political career, she has become an inspiration to many, including those within the Campbell Hall community. Zoe T. ’24, an outspoken ally of movements including Black Lives Matter and LGBTQ+ rights, sees Harris as an important role model, both for her personally as well as for the Black community and women at large.

“I am inspired by her because, although I don’t want to go into politics, I want to help people with whatever I choose to do,” Zoe T. said. “[Harris’ election] affected me because I get to see that America is progressing. It’s becoming a place where people of color, and especially women of color, are in power. I am able to motivate myself with the fact that there are women of color in positions of power that are able to do so much.”

Likewise, Kena Dorsey, director of TV Production and high school Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Coordinator, looks up to Kamala Harris. She feels that having female and biracial representation in politics is an important step forward in the progression of the nation. Dorsey also hopes that Campbell Hall students will see the importance of having a woman like Harris in office, who is breaking barriers.

“The intersectionality of my identity provides many reasons for me to be inspired by her,” Dorsey said. “First, as a woman, and also as a [person] of color. I’m inspired by her life story of her mother being an immigrant and being in a biracial family.

There’s just an enormous sense of pride to have that representation. [She is] breaking [the] stereotypes that women and people of color can’t achieve these sort of victories or successes.

So, it’s amazing, but even more importantly, I think, for all students, no matter what your gender, color, or religious background is, it’s equally important for other people to see these representations too. This is wonderful for everyone.”

Haile W. ’22 feels that Harris will motivate current and future politicians alike. Haile W. thinks that Harris will help to normalize diversity in government and pave the way for aspiring students of color who want to go into politics.

“I feel like people are going to be a lot more optimistic because

representation is everything,” Haile W. said. “If you see someone who looks like you in a role that maybe you weren’t even considering, [it puts the possibility of being in a position of power] into the minds of young people.”

Thinking similarly to Haile W., Zoe T. also looks forward to seeing more people of color in political positions. She thinks that Harris’ term in office will alter the definition of what a politician can or should be. “[Her leadership] will shift the standard of what a person of power is,” Zoe T. said. “For such a long time it was always [seen as] a white man, but now with [people of color] not just as Vice President, but in the senate and house of representatives, it’s shifting the narrative that people of color [can’t be in positions of power].”

As a faculty advisor to the Black Student Union for Girls (BSUG), Dorsey feels obligated to help students find their voice in any way she can. She encourages students to face obstacles head-on while acting as a role model and sharing her experiences. Dorsey looks forward to watching her students continue to grow as strong individuals and leaders in their community, just as Harris has become a leader for hers.

“We encourage the students to have a voice and make their presence known,” Dorsey said. “‘Be vocal, fearless, bold [and] hold your ground.’ [I teach them that,] whenever you’re met with any type of obstacle, [view it] as an opportunity; [view it] as a means to reach your goal. [I’m] empowered [by sharing] my story and modeling [certain] behavior. I’m modeling my behavior into something that they can use as an example. I share personal stories with them all the time about things that I’ve done and where I’ve had to stand up to power.”

Dorsey is hopeful that once the Biden-Harris administration is sworn into office that they can unify the negativity between Democrats and Republicans and begin to bridge the gap between those that hold vastly different opinions than one another. She looks forward to watching the nation begin to heal.

“There’s just been so much division, hate, rhetoric, racism and just so many negative things over the years, [so] I’d like to see America get back to being nicer and more caring,” Dorsey said.

“I’d like to see that restored back to America because I feel like that’s been hurt. And, equally as important, [I hope to see the Biden-Harris administration make changes in] health care, police reform, immigration law, gun violence and all of these actions that I feel are important. I would like to see a good step forward in [making] change.”

Vietnam 101: The War on Campus chronicles the beginnings of the underground, grassroots anti-war effort through its growth into a nationwide studentled peace movement during the Vietnam War. Based on recollections of students at Oberlin College in Ohio between 1964 and 1970, the play recognizes the vital importance of nonviolent protest as a means to fight for peace and justice.

The Nutcracker

2020 Virtual Production

We knew well in advance we could not hold the annual CH Nutcracker on campus this year. So we developed a plan that would allow us to rehearse and film on campus, following health and safety protocols. Our dance floor would be set up outside. Dancers would be six feet apart and remain in small cohorts. Alas, as the case numbers increased and county guidelines changed, we had to pivot to a fully remote Nutcracker! We then came up with our new plan: send home flooring, costumes, and props to the dancers.

Rework the choreography so that it could be done within the confines of a home. Teach the dancers how to record themselves.

The final video involved over 500 hours of editing and was viewed by 647 devices! In the end, we felt confident that we were able to feature and celebrate each dancer’s talent and hard work.

How did the dancers learn the choreography?

The dancers learned their choreography through after-school rehearsals held on Zoom. We had originally hoped to rehearse and film on campus and based the choreography accordingly. But midway through the process, as case numbers worsened in LA and the County changed their guidelines, Ms. Wilhoite had to adjust and teach choreography that would work in homes. Props had to be carefully thought out and in some cases, we had to purchase multiple versions of the same prop. For example, in the scene where Fritz and Clara fight over the Nutcracker doll and Fritz accidentally breaks off its head, we had to buy two identical dolls.

By doing so, each dancer could pretend to be pulling it back and forth so that it looked like they were fighting over the same doll.

How many locations did you shoot?

• Costumes and dance flooring were distributed to each dancer so that they could film the final dance numbers from home.

Students used their living rooms, garages, backyards, friends’ or relatives’ homes, and a few used their dance studios.

• For the dancers “en pointe” we had sections of our professional grade sprung-floors delivered to their homes.

• For our seniors, we wanted to provide them with something special since they had committed so many years to this production, so a skeleton crew of one filmmaker and Ms. Wilhoite went to their backyards to film.

How did the dancers film their pieces?

The dancers used either their phone, laptop or another device and submitted their performance videos to a special Google folder.

CONNECTION CAMPBELL HALL ALUMNI BOARD LAUNCHES PROFESSIONAL NETWORK

The Campbell Hall Alumni Board is proud to announce the Viking Career Connection which seeks to provide Campbell Hall graduates with job and internship opportunities as well as career guidance from our very own alumni network, CH families, and friends of the community.

“With the onset of the pandemic in the spring of 2020, the Alumni Board thought a lot about the Campbell Hall Class of 2016 who would be graduating from college into a very uncertain world,” says Aubrey Rakoski, Advancement Associate Director, Alumni Relations. “We felt this was the perfect time to roll out this important networking opportunity as CH alumni will need as much support as possible to navigate what is already a challenging time.”

Leveraging the vast network of more than 3,700 alumni worldwide, the CH Alumni Board hopes to expand Campbell Hall’s reach through these professional and personal connections. As CH Alumni Board member Michelle Knutson ’12 (pictured above left) says: “Networking is hard enough - especially with strangers (and amid a pandemic at that!). What can alleviate some of the difficulty is starting with your home base.

Campbell Hall, with its current students, recent graduates, and extensive reach of alumni has created a massive community that is willing to help if only we were all connected. Viking Career Connection is here to make that happen.”

“This feels like a natural extension for Campbell Hall,” says Alumni Board member and Professional Network Committee Chair Josh Smith ’94 (pictured above right). “Fellow alumni who are offering professional opportunities know the quality education that CH provides its students and know that CH alumni they place in internship or work opportunities will work hard and get the job done.”

The CH Alumni Board is continuing to collect professional information from community members so that they can match interests of those alumni seeking mentorships, jobs, or advice with those willing to help. Michelle adds, “It can also be used in the reverse - as a lead system if you yourself are looking to hire CH grads.”

The Viking Career Connection illustrates the clear bonds shared by CH alumni. Michelle notes: “Josh and I never crossed paths as students at Campbell Hall but now are in the same profession - we are both real estate agents in Los Angeles. We quickly bonded over that and, of course, always have Campbell Hall in common. It’s easy to see the invisible fabric that weaves all of us alumni together - without ever sharing a classroom, playing on a sports team together, or sharing the theater stage, we still have all lived a similarly parallel life that we can each relate to.”

Josh echoes this sentiment about their shared alma mater.

“Campbell Hall is a second family to us all and will be with you the rest of your life,” he notes. “This community goes beyond friendships — supporting you from your first day of school to graduation and throughout your entire career.”

Greg Drobnick ’00 Entrepreneur’s fast growing telehealth start-up receives $100M investment

Greg Drobnick ’00 is the co-founder and executive vice president of corporate development of Heal, a company that provides caring, professional in-home and video call healthcare services to patients.

Ranked no. 13 on the 2020 CNBC Disruptor 50 list, Heal recently received a $100 million investment from health insurance company Humana. This new partnership will provide value-based primary care to Humana members, many of whom are older or living with multiple chronic conditions, right in the comfort of their own home.

Tamara Conniff ’89 Music executive continues to shatter glass ceiling

Tamara Conniff ’89, Executive Vice President of Business Affairs for Roc Nation Music Publishing, has a long history in the music industry.

Her father, Ray Conniff was a worldrenowned bandleader and arranger and Tamara grew up learning the ins and outs of the business, even spending time touring and performing with her dad’s band.

Tamara previously served as Chief Operating Officer of Artist Publishing Group and as President of music services for Front Line Management Group/Ticketmaster.

She notably helmed Billboard magazine as the first female chief editor and associate publisher and under her leadership, the magazine won Folio’s prestigious Eddie Award for Editorial Excellence. Tamara shared her insight and experiences in the music industry with the podcast Great Minds.

Justin Holiday ’07 NBA player uses platform to advocate for change

Justin Holiday ’07, professional NBA player for the Indiana Pacers, wrote a powerful open letter to the world. “More than ever,” he writes, “there is a dire need now to elevate my Black brothers and sisters, to use my platform to empower and elevate our people.” He continues, “We’re riding a historic wave of changes.

And I’d like to be clear — I choose to stand on the side of history that facilitates change, real change, and that sparks a healthy dialogue, and establishes unequivocal support for our community in various capacities...I’m going to use my rights and unique platform to advocate for change.”

Katherine Hightower ’20 Poet is published in acclaimed journal

Congratulations to Katherine Hightower ’20 whose poetry has been published in the acclaimed online literary journal, Q/A. Katherine’s piece was originally written for her creative writing thesis when she was a Fellow at Campbell Hall.

Charlotte Schulman ’18 Masks for those in need

Sam Glicklich ’18 Pianist lends his talent to a global virtual choir

Through her fundraiser, Face Masks for LA's Homeless, and in partnership with local nonprofits including Food on Foot and Homeful LA, Charlotte Schulman ’18 (pictured above right) has distributed hundreds of masks to people experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles.

Sam Glicklich ’18, a student at the Colburn School in Los Angeles, recorded the beautiful piano track for Grammy-winning composer and conductor Eric Whitacre on his incredibly moving original composition “Sing Gently.” Whitacre, one of the world’s most performed composers, brought together 17,572 singers from 129 countries, aged 5–88, who sang, recorded, and submitted their videos to be combined to form Virtual Choir 6. It premiered on July 19, 2020 and quickly trended to the top 40 videos. With so many singers, there was only one piano player!

We are immensely proud of Sam and his incredible musical accomplishments!

Mary Turpin ’10 Launches fashion brand

As Fashion Director at Marc Jacobs, Mary launched a new line called Heaven by Marc Jacobs last September. Geared toward a younger, more culturally engaged customer, the collections are a tribute to the most interesting and unseen aspects of the brand’s downtown New York heritage. The second collection launches in early March and will be available in a new retail store on Fairfax exclusively carrying the line.

Max Rubin ’17 Entrepreneur’s blast from the past sparks new business

As founders of Contempo Casuals, a women’s fashion empire based out of Southern California during the 1960s-1980s before being sold to Neiman Marcus, Max’s grandparents had an eye for fashion as well as a strong entrepreneurial spirit, both of which Max inherited. Before his grandfather’s death in 2019, Max collaborated

with him to bring original handdrawn advertisements from the original company to create unisex t-shirts. This year, the prestigious list features Pamela Shamshiri ’89 + Ramin Shamshiri ’91 of Studio Shamshiri in the 2021 AD100. The brother/sister team abide by an ethos when designing: “We dive deep into the history of our projects to honor the past and build for its future.”

Alexa Daniel ’12 Talent manager joins new firm

Manager Alexa Daniel ’12 has joined M88, a full-service representation firm with a strong focus on diversity founded by former WME partner Phillip Sun and Macro founder and CEO Charles D. King. Alexa began her career in the talent department at WME. Along with manager Gerald Lee, she works with a host of talent including Michael B. Jordan, Idris Elba, and Donald Glover, to name a few.

As Director, Growth and Strategy at Calibrate, a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to transforming the lives of young people from underserved communities, Greg has found his work extremely rewarding. Greg notes, “For CH alums, this is a great program. Calibrate helps at-risk youth develop life skills that turn them into leaders in their communities.

Written and directed by Elle Fanning ’16, ‘Gucci Always Wins’ stars Chloe Rosey ’09 and features special appearances by CH alumnae Eloise Ker ’07 and Alessandra Garcia-Lorido ’09 and current student Presley P. ’22! Gucci Absolute Beginners is a new series in collaboration with Dazed that challenged a selection of nine artists to do something they’ve never done before: get behind the camera and into the director’s seat. Each of the talents developed their own screenplay and brought it to life by stepping behind the camera and directing their own short film.

Damon Glymph (pictured left) is the proud President of Los Angeles based Posh Luxury Imports whose owner, Omar McGee, was recently featured in Forbes magazine for the company’s enduring dedication to diversity and inclusion. Jrue Holiday ’08 NBA player is generous on and off the court

Amanda Corday ’07 Setting the stage for young feminists

In July 2020, Jrue Holiday ‘08 and his wife Lauren Holiday generously pledged the remaining NBA basketball player's 2020 salary to launch the Jrue and Lauren Holiday Social Justice Impact Fund. The new Fund will support nonprofits, Black-owned businesses and citywide initiatives that seek to bring about equitable outcomes for Black and Brown communities. Jrue was also named the 2019-20 Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year which recognizes the player "deemed the best teammate based on selfless play, on- and off-court leadership as a mentor and role model to other NBA players, and commitment and dedication to team."

In the production She Persisted, The Musical, Amanda Corday ’07 plays two inspirational women who overcame barriers and made waves, Dr. Virginia Apgar and Sally Ride. While the New York premiere was cut short due to COVID-19, the cast was reunited virtually to bring young audiences a show that celebrates real-life heroes and was dubbed last season’s Off-Broadway Alliance Award winner for “Best Family Show.”

Naomi Asher ’94 is now Vice President, Neighbouring Rights, UK & International at Sony/ATV Music Publishing, based out of their London office. In this role, Asher will maintain relationships with societies and clients across the UK and internationally and create strategic initiatives to ensure performers receive fair pay. Greg Lieberman ’07 Game developer makes learning grammar fun

During his Senior year at Campbell Hall, Greg Lieberman ’07 used his free time to prototype an educational flash game called Grammar Ninja. Today, a completely reimagined mobile app of Grammar Ninja is now available on iPhone and Android! Greg set out to create a game whose core mechanics and educational content was tightly coupled. He wanted people to experience an educational game that was legitimately fun, and (less obviously) transformed how players think about written text. Every sentence becomes an interactive puzzle with nuances as rich and complex as the human language they are written in. Players who master the gameplay of Grammar Ninja can apply their critical thinking skills to everything they read moving forward. Grammar Ninja has engaging gameplay in both English and Spanish.

Alexandra Yeaggy ’00 Bringing bridal to a new level

Tune in to watch the Netflix romantic comedy Emily in Paris directed by CH alumna Zoe Cassavetes ’88 alongside Andrew Fleming and Peter Lauer. The series co-stars Lily Collins (Rules Don’t Apply, To the Bone) and Tony nominee Ashley Park (Mean Girls).

Alexandra Yeaggy ’00, founder of Yeaggy Bridal, was featured in National Bridal Market Chicago, the leading tradeshow for bridal and special occasion needs. Yeaggy Bridal is an atelier which consists of pattern makers, seamstresses and embroidering artists who are exceptionally skilled in high-fashion techniques.

Specializing in drapery and embroidery, Alexandra’s statement wedding gowns and bridal accessories are primarily known for their fit, quality, and luxurious embellishment.

Despite the impact of the pandemic, President of Colony Business Management & Managing Director of The Colony Group Shane Glass ’96, continues to help his clients prosper.

Shane handles big music acts, along with athletes, directors, producers, writers, digital influencers and execs and was recently profiled in Variety’s Business Managers Elite 2020.

Catherine LaGaly ’09 Designer launches organizational and interior styling business

Alumni Executive Board member Catherine LaGaly ’09 talked with VoyageLA about building her eponymous design business and forging her own professional path by fitting together two different interests: organizational design and graphic design.

“Everything I’ve been drawn to and pursued over the years is about making spaces, environments, and experiences more beautiful and more functional,” says Catherine.

Grant Gelt ’98 Actor and his castmates from The Sandlot reunite for COVID-19 charity

Grant Gelt ’98, who played Bertram in the beloved baseball-themed movie The Sandlot, reunited virtually with his castmates along with Los Angeles Dodgers baseball star, Justin Turner to raise funds for the COVID-19 relief effort for the Justin Turner Foundation. The actors recreated favorite scenes from the movie and reminisced about shooting this classic film.

Bryce Louie ’20 Alumnus lets his voice be heard

Bryce Louie ’20 was selected as one of only 50 students from across the United States to participate in a selective internship program at the Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies, a national non-partisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting Asian Pacific American participation and representation at all levels of the political process. The program was set to take place in Washington, D.C. but, due to the pandemic, took place remotely instead. Over the course of the program, the participants passionately tackled and advocated for change on some of the most pressing issues of the day from climate change to racial inequality, To Bryce, this “was not only meaningful, but life changing.”

Bryce was then selected as one of only two students from his cohort to share his opinions and concerns in a workshop that would ultimately bring these students’ issues and questions to both the Democratic and Republican National Conventions. Chris Evans, best known for his role as Captain America in the Marvel adventure series The Avengers, and actor and producer Mark Kassan who is his partner in the nonpartisan civic engagement platform A Starting Point, joined the virtual work session to lend their support. Chris Evans said, “I’m honored to be associated with you folks.”

Ivy Withrow ’11 Writer/Producer debuts inspirational film

Along with parents Glenn Withrow and Hallie Todd, Ivy Withrow ’11 co-wrote and co-produced The Last Champion, the inspirational story of a fallen wrestling champion who returns to his small hometown seeking redemption. The film stars Cole Hauser (School Ties, Dazed and Confused, Good Will Hunting, 2 Fast 2 Furious, Yellowstone).

Bryce is no stranger to politics and to letting his voice be heard. He was one of Los Angeles’ youngest elected officials, having served as the youth representative for the Historic Cultural Neighborhood Council from the age of 16. About having the chance to take part in such a meaningful program, Bryce notes: “I credit my education at Campbell Hall for this opportunity because the teachers provided me the necessary tools for me to grow and flourish. Campbell Hall has been the perfect school as it has given me the confidence to do anything my heart desires. So thank you, Campbell Hall...you have been so great to me!”

Campbell Hall was started in 1944 during World War II, a tumultuous time in history.
