D

uring Campbell Hall’s 75th anniversary, we chose three powerful words to showcase on banners hung across the city and draped from the Spielberg Family Arts and Education Center along Laurel Canyon Boulevard: Community, Spirit, and Tradition. These three words are emblematic of the qualities that truly set us apart and that also work together to create the unique Campbell Hall approach.

Confucius, whom we read in my World Religions seminar, believed profoundly in the power of tradition to save humanity from its worst excesses and to safeguard central elements of culture (such as community and spirit). While we seek to innovate as a means of growth, new meanings and programs need to be rooted in the soil of longstanding practices in order to flourish. Traditions at Campbell Hall run deeper than just our own school’s history, long as it is; ultimately we are rooted in the Judeo-Christian tradition and its emphasis on justice, compassion, responsibility, and leading a meaningful life. The new curriculum and new approaches that we may pioneer in the next decade will be successful only if they are true in spirit to the school’s 75-year history and its 3,000-year-old moral and spiritual foundations.

Confucius wrote in an era of social anarchy. The 21st century is also troubled, and the solution lies in maintaining and growing culture that can carry the best community spirit into the future. Luckily, we have this in abundance at Campbell Hall. Our strong foundation of good has been built over three quarters of a century through this mutual spirit of community.

Our 75th anniversary was a good year to honor that past as we look to the next stage of adventurous growth at Campbell Hall.

The Campbell Hall community of students, parents, grandparents, faculty and staff joined together over the course of the 2018-19 school year to make a difference in the lives of countless people and worthy organizations across Los Angeles. Support came in many forms from service to donations and helped a wide variety of causes including homelessness, animals, the environment, and the victims of wildfires. Not to be forgotten were also kindnesses that were bestowed on members of our own CH community, from appreciation luncheons for faculty and staff, to posters encouraging others to be supportive, to baskets of treats made by students for the maintenance staff—-love and caring have been at the center of it all.

Elementary School Traditions Bring Joy + Strengthen Values Elementary School Traditions

raditions in the elementary school at Campbell Hall provide a source of excitement, wonder, and comfort for our students. Our students enjoy many traditions that fit a variety of purposes and are always centered on our mission of nurturing decent, loving, and responsible human beings in our community of inquiry. One of our most cherished traditions happens every Monday through Thursday morning where we gather for chapel as an elementary school community. In this space, be it the Garver Gym or the Lower Gym, our 5th and 6th grade students collaborate with Chaplain Hull and Mrs. Chauls to lead us through our chapel service. We sing, we celebrate birthdays, we hear student presentations, we pray; and as we say the Campbell Hall “collect” we are reminded always “to be to others kind and good.”

In the spirit of “being kind and good,” the tradition of being in service to others as well as building community is an important piece of elementary school. Service to others takes many forms including 5th and 6th grade students working with their 1st and Kindergarten pals, participation in the Outreach Gift Fair, Big Sunday, Food on Friday, bringing unwrapped gifts for the Hillsides chapel and high school students sharing their knowledge and leadership with our younger students. Community building traditions include experiential education trips, class field trips, holiday programs and, of course, the Halloween parade.

While we relish our traditions we are also in a continual process of examining these traditions to make certain they remain mission-driven and inclusive. As author Jim Collins puts it, “Like an artist who pursues both enduring excellence and shocking creativity, great organizations foster a productive tension between continuity and change. On the one hand, they adhere to the principles that produced success in the first place, yet on the other hand, they continually evolve, modifying their approach with creative improvements and intelligent adaptation.” To that end, we have adapted a few of our curricular “traditions” to better suit the needs of our students and our goals of inquiry and inclusion. As we ask how a particular tradition represents

inquiry and inclusion, we find ourselves shifting some of our curricular traditions towards a focus on the process rather than the product.

“Young Authors Publications,” where the focus had been on producing a bound book, has turned to “Writing Celebrations” with the focus on the process of writing, revising, editing, giving and receiving feedback, and encouraging students to find their voice as a writer. A peek into any classroom during the editing and feedback process reveals papers covered in “feedback sticky notes,” students discussing different vocabulary they can use to “show not tell” and writers truly engaged in the writing process and the work they are adding to their writing portfolios. As we continue to review best inquiry and inclusivity practices of our beloved traditions, we are wise to reflect on the words of Lois Hetland of the Harvard Graduate School of Education who puts it compellingly when she says, “Learning something new means questioning those things we do well automatically. It means questioning our tacit expertise....It is the willingness to risk some ‘clumsy’ movements that allows us to become explicit and intentional about what we do. And that, as far as I can tell, is how we can best honor the mystery of learning in our teaching.”

Creating Middle School Memories That Last A Lifetime

Aiming low and to the right, a student “bunts” the kickball and takes off for first base as a teacher races to grab and throw the ball to the first baseman. “Oohs” and “aahs” echo through the south quad when students exit their classrooms and see long tables filled with food associated with the cultures of Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, and French-speaking countries.

meaningful way for students and teachers to connect and build community with one another.

The current model is that students volunteer to play in the game and the final team of about 18 students is selected at random during chapel. Students and teachers who aren’t playing in the game watch from the bleachers and the Parents’ Association sponsors treats like popsicles or ice cream sandwiches. Faculty take the game seriously, wearing lucky socks and jerseys and practicing in advance of the game so as to be in top form. From the student perspective, the game is good fun. One student said, “I played in the game and it was a good experience and very interesting. It’s a classic event, like you would see in the movies.”

Make a Difference Day was established about 6 years ago with the goal of giving 8th graders an opportunity to engage in meaningful community service. Middle school students have always done community service in some form, but the activities of Make a Difference Day are off-campus and involve direct action. For example, students build and plant community gardens, harvest fruit, sort clothes at Baby2Baby, refurbish wheelchairs at Wheelchairs for Humanity, serve food at Union Rescue Mission, pack grocery bags at MEND, and play board games with seniors at a senior living center. Organized by middle school community service coordinators Bridget Zuver and Julie Whiting, the day provides students with an experience of empathetic and joyful service. One student remarked, “Make a Difference Day was really great. I had so much fun talking to and playing games with the people at the retirement home. It was very eye-opening for me because I had the chance to be someone bigger than myself.”

Finally, the Culture Lunch and Assembly has been a tradition for about 13 years and was developed at the urging of students who felt the best way to understand a culture was to eat the food of that region. There are two components to the celebration: a lunch and a performance. The lunch boasts food from Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, and French cultures, which are the four world languages offered at Campbell Hall.

Performances vary from year to year and involve sharing a culturally significant tradition, such as Japanese taiko drumming or Spanish flamenco. Both the Parents’ Association and faculty are involved in planning and executing the event.

Students appreciate both the food and the performance, as noted by a 7th grader, “I enjoyed that there wasn’t just one type of food to eat; you got a taste of all cultures. The storyteller with African heritage and stories was so cool and I hadn’t heard anything like that before.”

The Teacher vs. Student Kickball game occurs every May and was initially established as the final round of a March Madnessstyle kickball tournament between advisor groups. While our advisory curriculum evolved, the game remained as a

A Rich Tradition of Student-initiated Change

ampbell Hall has long enjoyed a tradition of students inspiring change on and off campus with their commitment to leadership and activism. Changes over the years have been implemented in all aspects of the high school program including areas such as student life, clubs and organizations, community service, arts, and academics.

It was student voices, led by Sarah Hudnut ’92, that advocated in the early 1990s for a more inclusive uniform that provided girls the opportunity for the first time in the school’s nearly 50-year history to wear pants instead of being limited to skirts. In another initiative promoting equity, this school year Juliette Schirn ’21 proposed the idea for on-campus free access to feminine hygiene products for all women. Schirn writes, “Feminine hygiene products are a necessity to an adolescent woman’s life. One does not have to purchase basic supplies such as toilet paper, soap, or paper towels while using a restroom, so I have always questioned what made tampons and pads different. When Mrs. LaGaly visited my advisory group, I proposed an idea to provide free feminine hygiene products in every [secondary] bathroom at Campbell Hall. The school quickly responded to my request... In doing so, Campbell Hall demonstrated its continued support for improving the lifestyle of its students... I feel fortunate to be a part of a community that continues to seek ways to improve the lives of its members by doing simple things such as providing free female hygiene products.”

Student clubs and organizations have always played an integral role in the Campbell Hall experience as important complements to academic, artistic, and athletic programs, and students have continued to take the lead in expanding extracurricular opportunities on campus. For example, students initiated the creation of the Spectrum LGBT Affinity Group in the 2016-17 school year. Although the Gender and Sexuality Alliance has been a long-standing club at Campbell Hall, queer students in the GSA expressed a desire for a space dedicated to LGBT voices and concerns. Similarly, Adam Chun ’20 and Chris Song ’20 wanted to create a safe place for students who identify as Asian or Asian American males to discuss issues such as the “model minority” stereotype, invisibility of Asian voices, microaggressions, and culture. Planning began last school year, and the Asian Heritage Alliance group meetings debuted formally this school year.

Additionally, in the past several years students have demonstrated a renewed commitment to social justice causes. Over the past year and a half, the Urban Stewards Club created the Community Compost Continuum, winning a micro-grant of $500 to purchase a compost tumbler, which they built themselves. The club then acquired funding for the Lettuce Grow vertical garden towers that were installed this year and are now growing food for monthly donation to MEND Poverty, a social services organization with which Campbell Hall has enjoyed a long partnership. This student-led group has already provided over 800 pounds of fresh produce to MEND.

In Music History classes, when students asked for hip-hop and more contemporary styles, teacher Erik Koski added units on Blues, Ragtime, and Jazz and Rap/Hip-Hop. The Jazz unit covers musicians from Robert Johnson and Scott Joplin to Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday, and Mr. Koski plans to add Sister Rosetta Tharpe and Bessie Smith next year. The Rap/Hip-Hop unit traces the origins of Hip-Hop in the South Bronx in the 1970s, as well as the beginnings of Reality Rap (aka Gangsta Rap) with Schoolly D in Philadelphia and IceT in Los Angeles, and finishes with the emergence of 1990s Afrocentric Rap with groups like Queen Latifah, Jungle Brothers, and A Tribe Called Quest.

Most strikingly, student voices brought about a change in graduation requirements for the first time in nearly 20 years. Over the last five years or so, students had expressed concerns about flexibility in class schedules because of their interest in taking advantage of the wider range of courses available due to the school’s substantial programmatic growth. In response to student need for more schedule flexibility and access to growing curricular opportunities, the school chose to eliminate senior seminars as a graduation requirement beginning with the 2019-20 school year.

We are excited about giving seniors this new opportunity to take even greater advantage of our robust curricular program with more space in their

schedules to explore their interests as active participants in our community of inquiry.

It seems impossible now. But back in 1995, my first year, we used to assemble Caliburnus, the high school literary magazine, in one day.

We would gather—the six or seven students in the brand new Creative Writing Club (there was no program, not even a class) and I— on beach towels on the grass near the elementary playground. Selecting from little heaped piles, we read aloud all the pieces we’d scavenged from everyone we knew who wrote. Over the next few hours, we’d make choices, order, proofread, clip all 30-40 pages together. Off it went to the printer. And that was that.

Barely feels like the same lifetime, now.

Today, work on Caliburnus—and the eight to ten other publications produced by the Creative Writing Program over the course of each academic year—begins the opening morning of school. From the start, we’re designing, brainstorming, publicizing, soliciting, encouraging, editing. By October, the first pieces to come pouring out of the nine different creative writing courses Campbell Hall currently offers reach the Literary Publications student staff. Within weeks, the first stories and poems go up on chcaliburnus.tumblr.com.

Thanks to the Creative Writing Fellows program (now in its third year), each senior class’s most passionate writers conclude a rigorous sequence of workshops and independent study projects with a thesis chapbook showcasing his or her best work. By December, we’re designing and editing those.

In April comes the CREW magazine, which highlights the work of the elementary students Campbell Hall’s creative writers teach every spring at local public schools.

Finally, in May—at a celebratory pop-up coffee shop outside Room 55, the home and hub of Campbell Hall Creative Writing—the finished thesis chapbooks and newest edition of Caliburnus (now always 140-180 pages) debut.

n the spring of 2014, the Campbell Scholars Program admitted its first cohort of 6th graders. These students were identified by teachers and administrators at Title I middle schools as first-generation college aspirants who, by their grades, aptitude, and behavior, seemed to have taken early initiative to one day be college graduates. Nearly forty students and their families submitted applications, transcripts, and teacher recommendations to have a chance to spend their summers at Campbell Hall. Twentyone were admitted.

Today, the Campbell Scholars Program turns five years old, and our inaugural cohort is now in the 11th grade. Most attend Title I magnet programs we helped them choose, where they have continued to thrive. They have not only spent the last five summers on our campus, but they have also received support during the school year. Behind this cohort are five others, one admitted in each of the last five years, each following dreams to be in the first generation in their family to graduate from college. Including a new cohort of 6th graders admitted in March, the program will serve over 100 scholars and families this summer, each with the opportunity to receive continuous guidance and support from our program until they graduate from college.

Statistically, most first-generation college students from Title I schools do not graduate from four-year colleges or universities for reasons that have little to do with their character, aptitude, or ability. These rates are far lower when you track high achievers from the 6th grade.

The Campbell Scholars Program aspires to ensure that every rung on the academic ladder of success is in place for underserved students who deserve to graduate from a four-year college, just as we do for our Campbell Hall students.

Our program’s belief is that, for the hardworking and academically talented, graduating from college is a matter of mindset, cultural acclimation, and personal wellness. Graduating from college may have more to do with believing you belong, having the courage to seek help, and knowing how to respond in moments of difficulty than we realize. That is why we designed our cohorts to become family, and why every aspect of our program is delivered through mentoring relationships that imbue confidence and self-esteem.

The impact is hard to miss. One student said, “Campbell Scholars is the greatest thing that has ever happened to me.”

Another called Campbell Scholars “a safe, friendly, fun, and loving environment,” and added, “you have people who understand you, amazing friends, and a family.” These words give us assurance that the scholars are experiencing what Campbell Hall students love most about our school.

Campbell Hall is finding new ways to leverage its institutional capacity to make a measurable impact in the community. In Campbell Scholars, we find ourselves at ground-level in the struggle for educational access and equity. Perhaps most validating are the joyful partnerships and support the program has received from public middle schools and high schools, private foundations, and the Campbell Hall parent and alumni community.

While this is a meaningful time to reflect on what we have built, there is still more work to be done. There are five years of new programs to develop, and more ways to extend opportunity as we tap into new partnerships and build more support. We not only invite you to celebrate with us, but also to partner in sending ripples into the community for generations to come.

I Have A Dream Foundation + Campbell Hall TV Production Workshop Encourages Dreamers For the second year in a row, Kena Dorsey, Director of Campbell Hall’s TV Production Program, conducted weekly workshops over the course of a month for students from the “I Have A Dream" Foundation (IHADLA). The foundation provides individualized social, emotional, and academic support to young people (“Dreamers”) from under-resourced communities.

During the workshop, the visiting students conceived, wrote, filmed, and acted in a television drama which centered on issues facing teenagers. Four Campbell Hall high school student volunteers helped with the workshop and production and the resulting television pilot short was premiered at the IHADLA school headquarters in Inglewood.

CH parent Vanessa Frank, a board member of IHADLA, has helped facilitate the collaboration between the foundation and Campbell Hall as part of Campbell Hall's partnerships with public schools. The collaboration among the students, faculty, and staff from both organizations has fostered teamwork and a tremendous sense of accomplishment among participants. The program reinforces IHADLA’s belief that “when given equal access to the resources they need to succeed, all children can ignite their innate potential and achieve their dreams.”

Professional Development Inspires Innovation in the Classroom Continued professional development for faculty is vital for keeping educators updated on the latest advances in teaching strategies, emerging technology tools for the classroom, and new curriculum resources — all of which can positively impact student achievement.

Professional development allows teachers to hone their craft, refresh their skills, and come back with new ideas that they can implement in the classroom as they model a love of lifelong learning.

In the 2018-19 school year, more than 100 faculty and staff participated in over 70 professional development opportunities. Below are a few highlights from some of these conferences and workshops: Pono Kahale

Association for Middle Level Education (AMLE) Conference iddle school teachers gathered for a 3-day conference, the largest of its kind for middle school educators, to gain more insight into young adolescent development, social-emotional learning (SEL) as well as to learn about new ways to engage students.

Pono Kahale, Middle School Dean and Math teacher, says, “Middle school students are at a unique stage developmentally. They are just a few years from having played with teddy bears and just a few years away from going to college. They require very specific teaching strategies and also a lot of emotional support.

The AMLE conference emphasized the need for empathy and how to discern when kids are behaving in ways that are developmentally ‘appropriately inappropriate,’ as one presenter put it. In my role as dean, this is an invaluable tool as it helps me understand the source and reason behind different behaviors. Kids at this age are developing a deeper sense of self, eager to make connections with and seek approval from peers, and are also experiencing a lot of physical changes. The

conference addressed ways that we can adjust teaching methods and classroom management styles to best correspond to their needs and offer support in this tumultuous time in their lives. For instance,

I now try to incorporate more activities that promote connections and also include movement in my lessons to allow students to get out excess energy.

We sometimes start class with check-ins, where students can talk about whatever is on their minds. This lets them know that we care about them as individuals.

Developing a Diversity Responsive Curriculum

ver the course of three days, 7 Campbell Hall faculty members joined more than 5,000 teachers from all over the country to explore innovative technological tools and topics in education.

She says, “The CUE Conference was a great opportunity to explore a host of online resources and apps that can be used in the classroom. These tools engage the students, especially in math, where real-life scenarios can be used to illustrate concepts we are learning in the classroom.

Catherine Singer, High School English teacher, says, “The main takeaway was the importance of students feeling seen in the classroom. In an English course, this, in part, means including literature that acts both as a mirror for students so they see themselves in the characters and as a window where they can learn from others. It was a great reminder about the importance of diversity and how it fosters learning by creating a safe space for all students.

The speaker and participants offered up rich resources, so I left inspired to explore additional inclusive texts.”

iPads were a new addition in 4th grade this year, so it was really helpful to learn about apps that provide students with additional practice and that encourage discussion and partner work. In addition, these tools are effective in addressing different learning styles and can easily track performance. Classroom management is also enhanced because the students are having so much fun learning!

CUE was also great for networking with other teachers. I now have this amazing extended network of professionals who share their innovative ideas and practices.”

Blessing of the Animals Brings Joy to Campus

A tradition that began at Campbell Hall in 1988, this year’s annual Blessing of the Animals was held for the first time on a school day. In the spirit of Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and ecology, Headmaster Bull, The Rev. Dr. Macatee and Chaplain Hull used branches dipped in holy water to bestow blessings and prayers on each attending animal.

The elementary playground was crowded with pets of all kinds, from the furry to the scaly, and it was clear from the smile on each human’s face how important these animals are to our students and their families.

Fighting for Women Veterans’ Rights n a special high school Veteran’s Day Chapel, former Army Major Jas Boothe who served in the U.S. Army during the Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom campaigns, discussed the unique challenges and triumphs women veterans experience. She was joined by documentarian and CH parent Lysa Heslov (mother of Maya ’20).

Major Boothe shared with students that in 2005, as a single mother, she lost everything in Hurricane Katrina and just a month later, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer which made her unable to deploy to Iraq as she was originally scheduled to do. Now homeless and, because of her medical condition, facing military discharge, she tried to find services to help her and her son. She was informed that there were no programs to help women veterans and that she should turn to welfare.

After her recovery, Major Boothe was determined to provide women veterans experiencing homelessness with services and resources to help them get back on their feet. She founded Final Salute Inc. in November 2010 as part of her commitment to “Never leave a fallen comrade.” Since then, the organization has raised over $3 million and helped more than 5,000 homeless female veterans and children.

Lysa Heslov featured Major Boothe in her award-winning documentary, Served Like A Girl. The film followed American female military veterans from around the country and their participation in the 2015 Ms. Veteran America competition (founded by Jas Boothe) a competition created to bring awareness of female veterans experiencing homelessness in the U.S. We salute these inspirational women!

BLUE + GOLD = GREEN! Campus-wide Sustainability Efforts The Green Team

The Green Team is made up of enthusiastic high school students who, in accordance with their mission statement, work “to promote environmental stewardship on campus and beyond.” The team, along with faculty advisors Monica Ley and Allison Shrage, has focused their efforts on bringing a greater awareness to the community about the need for better sustainable practices. According to the club’s President, Angelina Papa ’20, “We don’t need to be victims of a single use world. The key is to not generate waste in the first place.” By hosting a high school clothing exchange in which students swapped their used clothing items, The Green Team exemplified that recycling and reusing can take many forms and also be fun! The club also succeeded in eliminating plastic straws from the CH Café and replacing them with paper straws, and posted stickers on paper towel dispensers reminding users that “these come from trees” to incentivize a reduction in their use.

Most recently, Angelina approached Elementary School Principal Robin Frank, to find out how the club could engage elementary school students in sustainability efforts and a gardening collaboration was born. With the help of elementary school faculty members, Lindsay Allen-Blum (Sustainability Small Initiatives Project Manager) and Dani Staahl (Elementary School Sustainability Committee Liaison), Green Team members worked with 3rd and 4th graders on the elementary school garden – planting, weeding, and harvesting vegetables. As mentors to their elementary school counterparts, Green Team members offer guidance on the importance of healthy eating, share information about urban agriculture, and serve as role models for these environmental enthusiasts. This collaboration resulted in the formation of a 3rd and 4th grade Green Team!

When asked about the importance of the Green Team, Angelina said, “While climate change and environmental issues seem so daunting, the Green Team has been an amazing way to reduce those feelings of helplessness. The small things we do as individuals and collectively as a community really add up. Being part of this group of active club members makes me feel like I am making an impact and creating positive change.”

The Green Team is committed to promoting environmental stewardship on campus, working towards decreasing the amount of waste and single use items, and spreading awareness about disposing of trash and recyclables responsibly.

The Urban Stewards Club The Campbell Hall Urban Stewards Club is a student-led organization that connects students with the natural world and works with the school’s surrounding community to advance environmental and sustainability goals.

With the help of faculty advisors Jonny Rodgers and Alex Fishman, the students focus on identifying the ecological needs of the community and matching these with the skills and interests of the club members. As Mr. Rodgers notes, “This back and forth process allows students to get to know their surroundings and themselves, empowering them to be stewards of their urban environment.” The natural world, he contends, is all around us. “We want to remind our community that where we are in Campbell Hall is in nature, we’ve just covered it up. The city is in just as much need of care and protection as the nature outside of the city."

This year, the Urban Stewards Club worked with Lettuce Grow to install a hydroponic growing system made up of 8 stands with a total capacity of 224 plants. Located on the sun-filled top level of the Spielberg Family Arts and Education Center, this urban farm yields fresh, organic produce year-round.The funds to build the gardens were generously donated by a grant provided by the The I.N. and Susanna Van Nuys Foundation. The club also secured a micro-grant from Tutor-Corps for the purchase and installation of a large compost bin. Bevaris, which operates the Campbell Hall Café, supplies organic vegetable matter needed as a base for the compost. Materials such as coffee filters, shredded paper, and dried leaves collected by students serve to chemically balance the vegetable matter and help to turn it into rich fertilizer for plants. The fertilizer is then used in the seedling nursery which supplies new plants to the vertical garden towers. The vegetables and herbs harvested from these towers are donated to MEND (Meet Each Need with Dignity) each month, completing the cycle.

Campbell Hall is reducing food waste on campus as well as providing healthy, organic food to people in need. The Community Compost Continuum is a model for sustainability in action.

Club president, Aubrey Ahmanson ’19, says, “What’s so interesting is that you can show someone all the facts and figures, but the only way to make the environmental change we need is through passion. Urban Stewards has really fulfilled its mission in giving me, and hopefully all of its members, that passion. It has augmented my relationship with both nature and Campbell Hall.” She has been so motivated by the experience that she plans to major in Ecology when she attends Colorado College in the fall. She also notes that “in addition to being a scientist, I also plan on being an environmental educator to inspire the next generation to effect powerful, positive change.”

The Green Team and the Urban Stewards work together on occasion to bring sustainability to the forefront of the CH community. They co-planned a special Earth Day chapel and both clubs contribute to discussions in meetings of the Sustainability Service Learning Council (SSLC), whose goal is to become a zero waste carbon campus.

“Uncle Walt” A New High School Course in the Life, Films & Legacy of Walt Disney

n a culture obsessed with modern trends and fleeting celebrity, one man stands alone as a profound, unending influence on popular culture. Amazingly, his fame has not waned since his death in 1966. Every child born since knows not just his name, but smiles and thinks of a happy thought at its mere mention. We all cherish the unique elixir of magic his tireless work ethic poured into the American consciousness. When bestowing upon Walt the Medal of Freedom in 1964, President Johnson declared, “Artist and impresario, in the course of entertaining an age, Walt Disney has created an American folklore.”

Growing up in Whittier, CA, I caught the Disney bug while just a toddler during countless family trips to nearby Disneyland. There isn’t one thing I dislike about the now giant multimedia company: its music, its live-action films, its animated films, and especially its theme parks. When I decided to propose a class on Walt Disney in the fall of 2018, I was confident that Walt was worthy of serious academic study. Countless books and films are dedicated to his unique story. I was not entirely sure, however, if students would be interested in such an elective.

This fall, to my delight, 12 enthusiastic high school students signed-up for my new course, “Uncle Walt.” The course title is an homage to Disney’s wholesome, slightly truthful public persona. He was never Mr. Disney; on the studio lot, everyone was on a first-name basis. In television appearances, he preferred to portray himself as America’s favorite uncle, sometimes wearing a cozy wool cardigan, wool pants, and a simple black tie. His Midwestern twang and boyish enthusiasm appealed to dreamers of all ages. His iconic films showed us an America perfected, as it was meant to be but never quite was.

It seems President Johnson was right; Walt single-handedly curated the American mythos.

After wishing upon a few stars, my new class was able to take two amazing field trips. Our first was a guided tour of Disneyland, including a visit to Walt’s restored personal apartment above the Main Street USA firehouse. bathroom, as well as the cans of Walt’s favorite chili in the kitchenette. In the last week of the semester, we were fortunate to be granted a tour of the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank. After spending the entire semester learning about all things Disney, we felt like pilgrims marching towards a sacred shrine. Gabby Ferrer ’01(the animation teacher in the Visual Arts department) accompanied us as a chaperone and fellow Disney fan.

The magical day was filled with pixie dust. The director of the Walt Disney Archives, Rebecca Cline, gave an incredible introduction to the rarely viewed film which the students requested to view: Victory Through Airpower (1943). The film is a unique part of the Disney canon; it is WWII propaganda and includes some culturally insensitive scenes. It was one of Walt’s pet projects during the war and was paid for entirely by the studio (not the US government). We were very lucky to be granted a screening. Ms. Cline remarked that she had never seen it on the big screen herself. This may have been the first time it was viewed in such a capacity since the 1940s.

In addition to taking these amazing trips and learning about Walt’s incredible biography, this interdisciplinary course explored his studios’ technical innovations, the history of animation, the Labor Movement, the US government’s views on Communism in the 1940s, and issues of race, religion, sexuality and gender in the media. The single thread that weaves throughout is Walt’s incredible life, which like his films was filled with struggle, love, loss, villains, and eventual triumph.

The “Uncle Walt” elective is the perfect way for students to flame their curiosity about someone who will always be a part of their lives. Reflecting on his own illustrious career, Walt once said, “Of all the things I’ve ever done, I’d like to be remembered as a storyteller.” His spirit of innovation and imagination continues to shape our modern culture and consciousness.

Through “Uncle Walt”, future generations of Campbell Hall students will know not just his name and films but his timeless influence and remarkable story.

Reflecting on his own illustrious career, Walt once said,

“Of all the things I’ve ever done, I’d like to be remembered as a storyteller.”

CH Community Unites Helping Those Who Are Homeless

HomeWalk More than 40 members of the CH community, including students, parents, faculty and staff, participated in HomeWalk 2019, the 12th annual 5K family run/walk in downtown Los Angeles to help end homelessness. Thanks to the generosity of our CH community, Team Campbell Hall Vikings exceeded their fundraising goal, raising $1,800 in support of the cause. The event was sponsored by the United Way of Greater Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Rams.

Using Artificial Intelligence to Detect #FakeNews Online Sophia Latessa ’19 has long been interested in technology.

At just 15, she started development of the app MemeStream, a social platform built for Generation-Z to engage in global conversations around pop-culture topics by posting images with captions (i.e. memes). By 16, Sophia was serving as CEO of her own technology company and managing a team of six employees. After launching MemeStream, Sophia entered the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning and began working on a project at MIT.

As part of a research team at the Center for Brains, Minds and Machines at MIT’s McGovern Institute for Brain Research, Sophia worked on a “fake news detector.” She programmed artificial neural networks (AI algorithms) using machine learning and natural language processing (NLP) to detect online fake news. The machine was trained on a dataset which featured thousands of examples of news articles, including sources from The New York Times and The Guardian.

Sophia believes that it is imperative that the tech industry continues to explore how artificial intelligence (AI) can be used for social good and she is proud to have worked on the fake news detector which is helping advance this goal. More importantly, Sophia feels that as the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning grows, it is imperative that the ethical implications of such technology be kept at the forefront. As Sophia says, “AI can only be as powerful as the programmer who built it.”

After working on the project for six months, another lifechanging opportunity presented itself. Sophia was asked to represent the project’s research team at a workshop entitled “AI for Social Good” at the 32nd Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS) in Montreal, Canada. Attended by thousands of leading researchers and tech giants such as Google, Facebook, and Microsoft, NeurIPS is one of the biggest artificial intelligence (AI) conferences in the world. Out of 5,000 research papers submitted, only 30 were accepted for presentation at the workshop. Sophia not only presented the team’s

After presenting her team’s work at the conference, Sophia headed directly to the airport to catch a flight home so she could attend school the next day. In the cab, she received a text from the workshop’s moderator asking where she was.

Confused, she let him know that she was headed back to Los Angeles. He then congratulated her and informed her that she had been selected to receive the award for best presentation.

While she was thrilled that her work received this esteemed award, she was also heartbroken that she would not be able to personally accept it at the conference. Ultimately, however, Sophia says she “valued the late nights at the lab more than walking up and getting the award. My time at the lab was truly the greatest gift of all.”

Sophia will be attending Stanford University in the fall as part of the Class of 2023.

AP Computer Science Award for Female Diversity Campbell Hall received the first College Board AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award for achieving high female representation in AP Computer Science. Only 167 schools earned the AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award for AP Computer Science A out of more than 18,000 secondary schools worldwide that offer AP courses.

Computer Science teacher, Alex Roberts ’94, believes strongly in expanding opportunities for young women in this important field, beginning with education and an introduction to what technology has to offer. We caught up with Mr. Roberts and he offered his insight in a brief Q&A session.

Q: Why do you feel the College Board AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award is significant?

Q: How do you think girls in STEM will impact the future of the industry?

A: It’s unfortunate that even though women represent 47% of the workforce, only 12% of engineers are female. We need to do more at every stage of education to help correct this imbalance, and I think this award from the College Board is helpful recognition for schools who are trying to encourage women and young girls to consider a career in Computer Science or Engineering. Campbell Hall does its best to nurture young women who show a talent for STEM, to provide wonderful role models, and to help inspire all students to challenge themselves in the technical fields, and it’s nice to be recognized by the College Board.

Ada Lovelace was the first to recognize the potential of Babbage’s Analytical Engine in the 19th century, and scientists like Margaret Hamilton and Katherine Johnson were key in designing the software that allowed the Apollo program to land on the Moon. Today Science and Technology drive everything around us, and I believe the more women who choose to enter STEM fields, the more innovative and better all of our lives will be.

Q: Why do you think closing the gender gap in computer sciences is so important?

A: I think it’s tremendously important, not just because there’s a huge demand for STEM workers in industry, but also because when you’re engineering a product, or making a website or app, or anything that relies on software, you have to keep in mind that 50% or more of your customers are going to be women. If the people designing it are all or mostly male, you risk leaving out perspectives and skills that can help make your product better. Diversity of opinion has been shown to be integral to innovation.

Two 8th Grade Teams Place in National Science and Engineering Competition Campbell Hall 8th grade students in the Science Investigations class participated in eCybermission, a nationwide, web-based science & engineering competition that promotes self-discovery and real-life applications of STEM. CH students worked in teams to research an environmental problem and then designed and built a prototype of a solution to the problem. Finally, they conducted experiments with their prototype to test its effectiveness.

Aqueous Scientists

Team “Aqueous Scientists” (Will A. ’23, Jean-Luc D. ’23, Gabe E. ’23, and Ethan E. ’23) worked on the problem of the pollution of urban runoff and stormwater. They created a filtration device and tested it to see how well it reduced bacteria levels, heavy metals, and other contaminants. The team won first place in California for 8th grade and were also a regional finalist team, which means that they were one of the top three state winners in the western U.S. Team “Moroni Islanders” (Finn D. ’23, Jared J. ’23, Jacob S. ’23, and Harrison W. ’23) worked on the problem of light pollution, specifically how it impacts nocturnal pollinators. They created a prototype of a lighting system

that could be used near agricultural areas that would minimize the negative impacts to nighttime pollinators (like moths). They won Honorable Mention for California.

China: It’s Time to Meet Your Daughters Student Places in Prestigious New York Times Contest As part of her Monsters, Mayhem + Madness class, 8th grade student Lila M. ’23 wrote an editorial essay that her teacher, Mr. Turner, encouraged her, along with all the students in his class, to submit to The New York Times Sixth Annual Student Editorial Contest. The competition challenged students from across the nation to write evidence-based persuasive essays on topics they care deeply about.

Out of more than 10,500 submissions, Lila’s essay entitled, “China: It’s Time to Meet Your Daughters,” was selected as one of the twenty-seven runners-up in this prestigious contest. The competition was open to students aged 13-19 and, at just 14 years old, Lila is one of the youngest to be honored. Her editorial focuses on China’s one-child policy, which was implemented over the span of more than thirty-five years, and its impact on generations of families. The policy not only prevented millions of births but, “given the cultural preference for male children,” forced the abandonment of thousands of girls. In her very personal essay, Lila explains that she was one of these children “who ended up in an orphanage, ultimately adopted to be raised in America.”

Speech and Debate Team Make Their Voices Heard Nationally The Speech and Debate team had an impressive year. Two students, Francesca Lupi ’20 and Avalon Dalesandro ’20, were ranked #2 nationally in public forum debate based on the total season record. Liana Schmitter-Emerson ’21, a member of the USA Debate Team, received the #1 speaker award at the Harvard University Invitational and will be attending the National Tournament in Dallas in Congressional Debate. In addition, Campbell Hall qualified 3 of the district’s 6 entries to the state tournament in public forum debate. These included: Avalon Dalesandro ’20, Nathan Lee ’21, Riley Friedenberg ’20, David Eick ’22, Matlock Grossman ’22, and Oliver Pozil ’22. Casey Grae ’20 also represented Campbell Hall at the state tournament in Congressional Debate, and Liana Schmitter-Emerson ’21 competed in Domestic Extemporaneous Speaking.

At the tournament, Friedenberg and Eick placed second overall in the state of California and Schmitter-Emerson broke to semifinals.

Vikings Robotics Team 580 Continues to Flourish FUN FACT ABOUT TEAM 580 A low-numbered team, like Campbell Hall’s Team 580, is revered. With new team numbers being issued in the 7,000s, a team with a number as low as 580 is evidence that the team has been around from the early years of FIRST Robotics, which began in 1992. Team 580’s rookie year was 2001, with just a handful of eager students determined to build Campbell Hall’s first robot and compete against other schools.

This year, Campbell Hall’s Vikings Robotics Team 580 experienced an influx of students who were new to the program, with 80% of the team comprised of students who had never participated in robotics previously. Led by CH parents Angie Robbins, Pete Robbins ’89 and Rick Galinson, and joined by CH Engineering and Physics teacher Greg Williams, members of Team 580 were tasked with learning techniques such as pneumatics and Java programming.

The students eagerly applied these new skills to this year’s robot and even built their first elevator! After participating in a series of competitions, the students ended this year’s season with a wealth of knowledge that will serve them in countless aspects in the future.

Campbell Hall Redesigns College Level Courses Based on University Findings Courses Promote Inquiry-Driven Learning and Reduce Excessive Achievement Pressure on Students

hile the debate continues in educational institutions across the country over whether taking the College Board’s Advanced Placement (AP) courses is advantageous for students, Campbell Hall is forging its own path with a unique blend of high school course offerings.

Campbell Hall continues to provide AP classes that fit with the school’s mission but has eliminated five of the 25 AP classes it had offered because the courses did not align with its inquiry-based approach to teaching and learning. These courses have been replaced with Campbell Hall Advanced Inquiry (CHAI) classes: innovative college-level honors courses that encourage high-level critical thinking and promote more in-depth engagement with the material.

In a 2016 publication entitled Turning the Tide by Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education’s Making Caring Common Project, the writers advocate for reducing excessive achievement pressure on students. The report was endorsed by more than 150 college admissions deans and has gained traction nationwide. As a Leadership School in the Making Caring Common Project, Campbell Hall began to assess its AP offerings to determine which met the

school’s mission of providing meaningful, inquiry-driven curricula.

After an extensive review process, the school determined that 12 of the AP classes were focused more on rote memorization with a focus on testdriven results that prevented teachers from diverging from a prescribed

curriculum and students from delving into the coursework in meaningful ways.

In response, Campbell Hall created the CHAI program, which allows for more discussion and inquiry, and launched its first UC-honors-approved courses in the fall of 2018. New for the 2018-19 school year were CHAI Physics with Calculus Honors; CHAI Art History Honors: Global Approach; CHAI English Language and Composition Honors; CHAI English Literature and Composition Honors; and CHAI Modern World History Honors. Added for the

2019-20 school year: CHAI Chemistry Honors; CHAI Environmental Science Honors; CHAI Technology & Ethics in the Information Age Honors; CHAI Human Geography Honors; and CHAI Critical Race Studies Honors (a course that does not represent the redesign of AP content but instead our own original curriculum.) Three remaining courses identified for redesign will debut in the 2020-21 school year.

Feedback from Campbell Hall students has been overwhelmingly positive.

Avalon Dalesandro ’20 who has taken a number of AP courses and is now enrolled in CHAI English Language and Composition, says, “I like the CHAI format more because it allows for more indepth discussions that tackle the complexity of each reading. Not having to do test prep gives us more time to discuss our reading and ask more questions about the work.”

Jane Emerson, who taught the AP version of the current CHAI English Language and Composition course, says, “I love teaching CHAI because the format of the class encourages us to focus on what matters most in an English classroom, which is connecting with the texts we explore in a meaningful way.

Rather than doing exam preparation or multiple-choice practice, students are

CHAI able to take control of the flow of class and guide conversations based on their own reactions to the books we read. CHAI allows for a more student-centered classroom, and we have the time and space for in-depth discussions of complicated texts. I am so excited to be a part of a CHAI curriculum and in its first year I know we are only beginning to discover what we can do.”

Though Campbell Hall has been at the forefront of this movement, we are not alone in reevaluating the AP model. There is a consortium of LA-area independent schools that has met several times to consider AP redesigns. Additionally,

according to an article in The Washington Post, several prominent independent schools in the D.C. area have also begun to phase out and/or eliminate AP classes in favor of a curriculum that is more collaborative. In a joint statement signed by eight D.C. area schools, they write that such courses, “will not only better prepare students for college and their professional futures, but also result in more engaging programs for both students and faculty.”

Many colleges and universities see the benefit of such reimagined college-level courses. As Kelly Walter, Associate Vice President and Dean of Admissions, Boston

University writes, “Campbell Hall’s new curriculum is exciting, innovative, and rigorous, and will provide students with the experiences and preparation that Boston University values in our admissions process.”

Campbell Hall will continue to refine its curricula based on the needs of the students, sound research, and missiondriven innovation to create a program that is intellectually stimulating and engaging.

Encouraging a deeper understanding of subject material feeds students’ natural curiosity and promotes lifelong learning which, in the end, is what education is all about.

The Spielberg Family Arts and Education Center was recently named in honor of the Spielberg family, acknowledging their transformative gift in support of the building’s construction. The Spielberg family’s generosity, along with that of many other donors, enables Campbell Hall students to explore their creativity and express their artistic vision in world-class facilities.

The 111,000 square-foot complex has become a hub of campus where students have the opportunity to create and collaborate in a wide array of artistic mediums from film to dance to music to visual arts.

“We are so grateful for the support of the Spielberg family,” said Headmaster Bull. “Their gift will have a long-lasting impact on the school. Just as the campus has been transformed, so has the experience of every Campbell Hall student.

Michael Pfaff Writes Book About Learning Styles

Michael Pfaff is much more than just a teacher. In addition to being a high school science teacher and an actor, Pfaff recently published The Student Within: The Art and Science of Easier Learning, which he wrote to help students improve their education and maximize their learning.

“It’s a self-help book for students,” Pfaff said. “Specifically, it’s written to get students to recognize their own innate personal strengths and to utilize specific teaching techniques, pedagogical techniques and learning techniques, to complement those strengths. It’s also written to motivate and inspire in order to light students’ fire.”

Pfaff was inspired to write this book through his teaching career. He has taught for 15 years in different schools and also taught educational psychology, which has provided him with experience and exposure to different learning styles. Also, the philosophies of Howard Gardner, most famous for writing Frames of Mind, Multiple Intelligences, and Five Minds for the Future, have inspired his own ideas.

“I think one of the biggest things that I learned from that experience is that students’ minds work so differently,” Pfaff said. “Sometimes in the classroom, more of one type of learning is emphasized. I’ve seen, unfortunately, students with very talented minds sometimes get turned off by school and, sometimes even worse, education because they are not given enough chances to succeed. I want to open people’s awareness to that.”

It took Pfaff a few years to write his book since he was also teaching and acting during that time. Pfaff hopes that students become motivated by his work.

“I want readers to be inspired, more self-reflective and recognize the way their own unique brain works and how they could leverage that,” Pfaff said. “If it helps a handful of kids, I’m happy. I was a different kind of student in high school, and I struggled and I was lucky enough to have a few key mentors that really helped me. My intention with this book is just to help kids, so whether it happens to help five kids or 5,000 kids, it’s just meant to help whoever needs it.”

Pfaff’s own teaching philosophy is reflective of what he writes about in his book. He wants students to be able to engage in the material and class in a manner that suits them best. Overall, his goal is to make an impact in the lives of his students. “When I started teaching at Suffolk University, the head of the education department there said, ‘everyone remembers that one teacher that made a difference for them; be that teacher for someone else.’” Pfaff said. “So that’s what I want to do. I want to be able to help kids and help them move on to better things. [When teaching,] I let kids make mistakes, learn from their mistakes, have fun and engage in a lot of cooperative learning.”

2018-19 Grandparents’ Committee Now in its 16th year and with 87 members across the United States, the Grandparents’ Committee continues to make an enormous impact on the school through their active participation in a myriad of school activities and events. Not only do these grandparents keep our campus well-fed through their generous faculty appreciation luncheons and famous secondary cookie day, they are insightful chapel speakers, classroom volunteers, vital members of the VikingCare and CH Fund Committees, key partners with the Kindergarten class in a weekly reading program, and also run the extremely popular Bingo game booth at the Homecoming Football + Carnival. Lani has been an avid volunteer at Campbell Hall since her oldest daughter entered middle school in 2006. Over the past 13 years and over the course of raising four CH students, Lani has held numerous Parents’ Association positions, including Junior High Vice President, Baccalaureate Co-Chair, Class Coordinator, Faculty Appreciation Co-chair and multiple stints as High School Vice President. In addition, she and her family have generously hosted many CH events including Board of Directors events, the Headmaster’s Dinner, grad night swag bag stuffing soirees, grade-level parent socials, and countless end-of-year pool parties. Lani is caring, steadfast, generous, dependable, and genuine and we are so grateful for her time and boundless energy.

Claudia has been an integral part of the Parents’ Association for 13 years and has served as Elementary Class Coordinator, Middle School Vice President, High School Vice President, and Uniform Exchange Chair. Her strong price negotiating tactics with outside vendors have saved the school countless dollars over the years. She has also been instrumental on the Bagpiper’s Ball auction committee, helping to secure many donations. For more than a decade, Claudia has been a reliable volunteer and leader, ensuring that the committees she serves on run smoothly and efficiently. She is compassionate and thoughtful and her kind disposition has the ability to make everyone feel welcome and comfortable.

Toya Holiday Becomes Hall of Famer Honored for Basketball Talent and Legacy

J

oining a select group of athletes, coaches, sports writers, and other significant contributors to the high school athletics scene, Toya Holiday was inducted into the Class of 2019 CIF LA City Section Hall of Fame at a ceremony this past April. She was recognized for greatness in high school athletics as a top athlete while a student at John F. Kennedy High School in the early 1980s. “I was humbled and honored to be in the presence of such legendary athletes, coaches, and newsmen and women at the induction ceremony,” said Ms. Holiday. “It was an amazing night and I had so much fun!”

As a pioneer in women’s basketball at the high school level, Ms. Holiday was a two-time All-City four-year varsity basketball player at John F. Kennedy High School. She was one of the nation’s top women’s basketball prospects and played for the Arizona State University Sun Devils. In 1982, she was named

the Pac-10 Conference Freshman of the Year averaging 12.9 points and 8.6 rebounds per game, while leading the team with 163 rebounds. She later transferred to U.S. International University where she was named Player of the Year in the West Coast Athletic Conference averaging 22.8 points and 8.3 rebounds. Ms. Holiday also played professional ball for the California Dreams League until 1986. She returned to Kennedy High School to coach the girls’ varsity basketball team at the age of 23. She continued coaching at Campbell Hall from 2004 to 2010 and currently serves as ninth grade dean and Human Development teacher.

Jill Schulman

Rafael Jauregi Rafael Jauregui spent 23 years in Campbell Hall’s Operations Department, serving as a skilled carpenter, masonry worker, and handyman. Rafael was often busy with large projects. He and a co-worker constructed all the trailers on the turf and added the elementary school math lab and homework room.

Jill Schulman has been the Chair of the Visual Arts Department and High School art teacher since 2002. She took a few moments to reflect on her 17 years at Campbell Hall.

“There have been many wonderful times at Campbell Hall, including my son, Alex attending CH and spending much time over 4 years acting in the Theater department with Mr. Adell. I attended all the productions.

Pamela Hopson, Director of Operations says, “Rafael was a kind, helpful, jovial, and eternally positive member of our team – he was always willing to lend a hand and a smile. He took pride in his work and it showed! We already miss his presence on our team dearly, but are happy to know that he will be enjoying his retirement with family and friends.”

When asked what he will miss most about Campbell Hall, Rafael said, “Everyone. All the nice, kind people.”

I am grateful to CH for all the opportunities I’ve had to build the Visual Arts Department and the curriculum. I could never have done this without the support of my amazing department, whom I will always cherish.

I will miss my students above everything! They have made me a better person in every respect.

My relationships with the Campbell Hall students have filled my heart with a joy that touches my soul! Life without them will be different, they have all left footprints in my heart!”

When asked about her future plans, Ms. Schulman says that they “include making work and Iyengar yoga. In the famous words of Auntie Mame, I will ‘LIVE, LIVE, LIVE.’ My love and profound gratitude to CH!” We wish Ms. Schulman all the best! She will be missed!

High school athletics had an impressive year with 13 out of 16 teams and individual sports making playoffs during the 2018-19 school year. Varsity Girls’ Tennis reached the ultimate goal of winning a CIF Title. The Vikings success was due in large part to one of the highest rates of participation with 60% of the student body playing a sport. 69 athletes played at least two sports and six Vikings played in all three seasons. Continuing a strong tradition of representation at the next level, 13 Vikings have chosen to move on and play their sport in college.

THIS IS HOMECOMING FOOTBALL + CARNIVAL Saturday, October 13, 2018 More than 2,700 Vikings, including students, parents, alumni, and friends, enjoyed a day of football, carnival rides and games, food trucks, Alumni Association-sponsored dunk tank, and bingo hosted by the Grandparents’ Committee. The middle school football team played a close game against Viewpoint School while the high school varsity team was victorious with a 69-39 win. Along with the traditional crowning of the Homecoming Court, the halftime show was especially exciting as fireworks lit up the night sky in honor of Campbell Hall’s 75th anniversary.

Sunday, November 11, 2018 • Saban Theatre Hosted by CH Dad Andy Richter, CH Rocks brought our entire community together for an afternoon of music and comedy to celebrate Campbell Hall’s 75th Anniversary and to raise money for the Endowment for Financial Aid. Headlined by Kelly Clarkson, the show was packed with talented performers including The Dad Band featuring CH Dads Brad Fernquist of the Goo Goo Dolls, Paul Doucette of Matchbox 20, and Dan Konopka of OK Go, stand-up comedy by CH dad Mark Curry, CH Pitch Perfect vocal group made up of CH faculty + staff, and America’s Got Talent competitors Angel City Chorale featuring CH teacher Ben Enright.

ampbell Hall’s prized artifacts are permanently housed in the school’s archives and there are usually few opportunities for the community to see them. The 75th anniversary was the perfect chance to showcase this treasured collection.

Vivianne Fernquist, the school’s archivist, conceived of a special display more than three years ago and approached Gallery Director, Joe Sola, for help in creating the exhibition. Both wanted to create a space where viewers could feel connected to the school’s history and engage with it in a more tangible and visceral manner. An enormous timeline running the length of two walls, allowed viewers to see the school’s growth and development up close. Custom vitrines made by local artist LeRoy Stevens, were filled with some of the school’s oldest artifacts including a World War II ration coupon book for Campbell Hall, the opening invitation to the first day of school on February 7, 1944, a report card from 1948 with a hand-drawn cover, original alma mater sheet music, and the personal copy of Manual for Priests belonging to the school’s Founder Dr. Campbell. Mannequins in school and athletic uniforms from various time periods provided a look into how students from previous decades dressed.

A touch of whimsy, with the wall-mounted shovels from groundbreakings for new buildings, the giant scissors from ribbon-cutting ceremonies, and the colorful slides from the 1970s and 1980s encased in a motion-sensor light box, drew visitors in, engaging them in a new kind of experience where history is also art. The vibrant “Then and Now” wall correlated photos of students, faculty, and campus from earlier days with those of today - illustrating both how much Campbell Hall has changed and how it has stayed the same. One of the most exciting displays was the “Student Voices” wall which ran student selfie-videos on loop on ipads, recounting current students’ contemporary memories.

The piece de resistance of the show was a one-hour documentary. Produced by CH parents Tom Grane and Anthony Dalesandro of Mob Scene, the film History Speaks: The Campbell Hall Story ran on loop in the gallery’s screening room. Archival photos and film complement the interviews with alumni and longstanding faculty which were conducted by Vivianne Fernquist and filmed by Kena Dorsey, Director of the TV Production Program, highlighting some of the most important traditions and milestones that have made Campbell Hall the outstanding school it is today.

LA FAMILIA La Familia hosted several fun events throughout the year including a welcome event, building of the Día de los Muertos Ofrenda (which was featured on ABC7-TV) to honor loved ones who have passed, the first annual “Kick it with La Familia” family soccer game, and the Cultura Graduation event that paid tribute to graduating seniors. La Familia is a CH organization for Latino/Hispanic families which aims to support school programming that increases cultural awareness of Latino/ Hispanic heritage and provides opportunities that foster unity within the school community.

Heritage Families, an affinity family organization that connects African American families across all grade levels, gathered throughout the year for a variety of special events. They kicked off the school year with a fun day of games and activities welcoming new families to the group. During the year, they hosted their annual Christmas party, a Faculty Appreciation luncheon, and the Gospel Choir Reception. They capped off the school year with The Heritage Family Senior Send-Off event honoring students from the Class of 2019 and celebrating their achievements.

More than 40 grandparents and their grandchildren took part in Campbell Hall’s Wizard School Scavenger Hunt at The Getty Center. In addition to taking in stunning views, guests also enjoyed the museum’s collection as they walked the grounds in search of sculptures and artwork described in their clues. Medals were awarded to The Pointers team for answering the most questions! There were no losers that day; special recognition even went to the Albert Einstein team for being “furthest away” from winning!

The 65th Annual Bagpiper’s Ball, The Diamond Gala, celebrated Campbell Hall’s 75th anniversary. This black tie event, chaired by Alexandra Grane and Adam Shell, featured a special performance by CH grandfather Paul Anka, dancing accompanied by the rhythms of West Coast Music provided by CH parents Jim and Cindy Eppolito, and a live auction hosted by CH mom Sharon Stone. The evening also featured a special paddleraise for the Elementary Diversity + Inclusion Fund led by CH parents Ted Burnett and Lisa Cryer. Many thanks to all who helped organize, donated to, and attended this elegant event which raised more than $1 million in support of Campbell Hall’s financial aid programs.

Two Campbell Hall Alumni featured in 2019 Forbes “30 Under 30” Campbell Hall alumni Alex Canter ’10 and Lauren Steinberg ’11, have been named to the Forbes 2019 “30 Under 30” list. The list acknowledges the boldest 600 trailblazing entrepreneurs aged 30 and younger in 20 different industries from the United States and Canada.

Alex Canter ’10, is the co-founder of Ordermark, an innovative management system that has revolutionized the way restaurants handle their online ordering business. As a fourth-generation owner and operator of the historic Canter’s Deli in Los Angeles, Alex saw a need to streamline the multitude of online ordering services, like Postmates, Grubhub, and ChowNow, into one centralized ticketing system to maximize profits and enhance operational efficiency. Restaurants are also able to use the software to create reports that help in key decisionmaking such as how best to manage inventory, menu, and staffing.

At just 24 years old, Lauren Brook Steinberg ’11 is the founder of Queen V, a line of feminine wellness products that uses pHbalanced formulas that are free of harmful ingredients. With an all female-team and bright, unabashed packaging, Queen V promotes openness about women’s health issues. With a strong online presence and partnering with Walmart, the company is poised to do $6 million in sales this year.

According to Lauren, “Campbell Hall created a close-knit community for me where I was able to form the best friendships and relationships with teachers who constantly encouraged and inspired me. Being on the newspaper staff, the school provided a safe space for me to be creative and the relationships that I formed there have shaped who I am as a person today.”

Alex and Lauren join Campbell Hall alumnus, Gavin Chanin ’04, a winemaker and founder of Chanin Wines, who also made it onto this illustrious list in 2013. IN MEMORIAM HART MADISON CAMPBELL Our community experienced a devastating loss in the tragic deaths of beloved rising 9th grader, Hart Madison Campbell and his sister, Ruby, children of Colin Campbell and Gail Lerner.

We grieve for these beautiful children whose lives were cut too short. We will forever remember Hart’s bright smile, deep warmth, charming humor, charismatic presence, and empathetic connection to those around him.

Our prayers go out to the Campbell family and to Hart and Ruby’s friends. May the memories of these blessed children provide comfort to all who knew and loved them.

JOHN BERBERIAN We were shocked and saddened to learn that our dear friend, fellow trustee (over two different tenures), and longtime Campbell Hall parent and grandparent John Berberian passed in early March this year.

John’s gift for connection and building community was legendary. I thought I was his special friend, and laughed to learn that so many people in the Campbell Hall community, including one of my sons, felt exactly the same way. John never showed up without a gift of some kind, never failed to ask about my family and what was on my mind, and never stopped advocating gently for his own friends, colleagues, family, and even friends of friends. John was the ultimate social networker before it was a thing; it was just his way to connect authentically with others and then build his business and his community from those authentic human bonds.

His son Danny ’97 said the most beautiful thing at his father’s memorial service: growing up, Danny did not aspire to be a superhero or president or athletic star—he just wanted to be like his father.

We would all do well to emulate the rich, family-centered, expansive life of this wonderful man.
