One of the many exciting parts of spring at Campbell Hall is the privilege we have as principals, college counselors, and deans to meet with every student and family to make course selections for the upcoming school year. Seeing the anticipation in an 8th grader’s eyes as she considers more concretely than ever her transition into high school, or feeling the 11th grader’s excitement about beginning his last year of high school as college emerges on the horizon, we all consider it a privilege to shepherd these students through their high school journeys. As a community of inquiry that guides student growth through asking questions rather than asserting answers, we encourage students to think about how their coursework can help shape their own engaging and meaningful high school experiences while they keep an eye on building their college applications. Because teaching and learning at Campbell Hall does not separate the mind from the heart but connects the two on a journey of intellectual and personal discovery, we ask students to consider how they can both honor and challenge themselves as young adults motivated by a healthy and evolving sense of self. Throughout these four-year counseling conversations, we engage students with a range of questions and also offer perspective in order to help them make decisions about how their high school experience can best serve as an opportunity to discover who they are and who they are becoming both as individuals and young adults who are informed, engaged citizens ready to make a difference in this world.
