iven Campbell Hall’s mission statement of raising smart, decent, loving, and responsible human beings, it’s not surprising that we attract the best and wisest parents!

And the most philanthropic. Particularly in recent years I have seen strong growth in this community’s desire to expand the program’s reach to “the children of the community.” While we will always focus on building and growing on our campus the best educational and co-curricular programs we can, part of our value proposition has to include nurturing compassion and civicmindedness among our students in real time rather than in the abstract; anything less would be “unlovely.” And so, growing from strength to strength, the school’s traditional focus on service and outreach has expanded to the point where the Board has added a Public Partnerships Committee (chaired by Dr. Susan Edelstein), one of our veteran administrators (Eileen Powers) now bears the title “Director of Public Partnerships,” and our graduates are valued as much for their authentic commitment to others as for their personal achievements.

Campbell Hall has been committed to outreach for decades with our holiday gift-gathering for the children of Hillsides, the elementary Outreach Gift Fair, and work with our sister schools in Haiti as our longest-standing commitments; last year saw a wonderful fruition of the Haiti partnership with the raising of $100,000 to build a new schoolhouse for St. Jacques. While those outreach programs will continue, the era of public partnerships includes increasing recognition of the importance for civil society of our partnering with local public schools for mutual benefit. And so, either through direct contact with area schools or through intermediaries like LA’s BEST or the LMU Family of Schools, Campbell Hall has invited hundreds of public school students to our campus and sent hundreds of our students to local public schools either as learning partners or as mentors of younger students in creative writing, filmmaking, chess, speech and debate, and other subjects.

Our largest public partnership program is the Summer Enrichment Pilot Program, soon to be renamed the Campbell Scholars Program in recognition of the end of its three-year pilot phase. That program leverages Campbell Hall’s unique model of inclusive, supportive, community-based college preparation to extend access to college for underserved populations in the north San Fernando Valley area.

Many of our own students have seen their lives transformed through their work as mentors in the program. SEPP has received hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations from community and family foundations, as well as donations from Campbell Hall families, in recognition of its public benefit. A few SEPP graduates have matriculated as Campbell Hall high school students, but all of them are supported through high school and into college by our staff and volunteers.

There are forces at work globally and nationally that are detrimental to our health as a democracy. The best colleges and the larger professional world – not to mention our parental consciences – desire graduates who will work to restore and invigorate our health as a society. What a joy it is to nurture smart, decent, loving and responsible human beings – not just for the sake of our own children – but for all the children of the community.

Campbell Scholars Program (formerly SEPP) is a tuitionfree, academically rigorous curriculum and college access program designed to support low-income, high achievers who aspire to be the first in their families to graduate from a four-year college. In many cases, this paves the way for others in their family and community. “This public purpose program is about making an impact in the community by doing what we do best—preparing exceptional kids for college,” says John Rue, Campbell Scholars Program director. “We’re just getting started, but we’re proud to see that it has already begun changing the lives of our scholars and their mentors.”

ACTION! Film & TV Workshop, a two-week, tuition-free summer program, partners Campbell Hall students with LA’s BEST (an afterschool program for Los Angeles public schools) students to act, produce, direct, and edit original productions culminating in a film/TV festival for students, families, and friends. Instructor Kena Dorsey notes, “It’s a great opportunity for students to see an idea through the various stages of production.”

Campbell Hall + Haiti is a partnership that began over 30 years ago. Toya Holiday, who chaperoned the most recent service learning trip to Haiti, notes, “A favorite part was when the older Haitian students invited the Campbell Hall students to form a circle to chat about their common teenage experiences.”

“Dream Big” is an annual event in which three schools in Boyle Heights, Watts, and Inglewood participate in STEAM-related workshops.

The schools are sponsored by the ”I Have a Dream” Foundation from third grade through college graduation. This year, Campbell Hall supported their efforts with a full day of activities created by CH teachers in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math. The elementary students shot rockets, broadcasted news, and built geometric sculptures. The middle school students composed music on iPads, engineered towers, and made ice cream. The high school students designed and flew gliders in the engineering lab or produced a show in the Arts & Education Center TV production studio.

SPEAKING from the heart

As a community of inquiry, we continuously look to provide opportunities for our elementary students to find their voices and listen to others. This year we have had a fantastic experience in grades 3-6 with the introduction of “council circles” during human development classes facilitated by Sarah Huss, director of human development and parent education, and Lonnie Ngo, associate director of admissions and human development teacher. Council provides students an opportunity to listen to each other in an intentional way. “As a relational practice, council circles are a powerful social and emotional learning strategy that promote an environment of trust and respect in the classroom and school” (Councilinschools.org).

Council begins with all students seated in a circle facing each other around a “centerpiece” that includes a talking piece.

Council opens with the ringing of a bell, and then students are reminded of the council intentions: speak from the heart, listen from the heart, say what is important, and be spontaneous in your response.

“These intentions are great because our ears are bigger than our mouths,” says Solomon Lubert ’26.

The talking piece is passed around the circle giving everyone an opportunity to respond to a question that is asked by the facilitator. Prompts are sometimes silly like, “Who is your favorite superhero?” sometimes related to something happening in the classroom like, “How have you been feeling since report cards came out?” and sometimes personal like, “Tell the story of a time when you have felt excluded.”

Mila Radulovich ’25 reflects, “Council is such a great time because what is said in council stays in council.”

As students navigate the wonderful yet tricky pathways of childhood, they look to us as the adults in the community to provide guidance and structure. Council provides tools for students to resolve issues on their own in a non-confrontational way while truly listening to each other and practicing the important skill of patience.

Third grade teacher Malerie Leff says of council, “It is allowing the kids to practice listening with intent and respecting one another. They are having to be comfortable with waiting their turn and not always being heard right away.”

Council is yet another way for students to put into practice what they say in elementary chapel each day during the Campbell Hall collect: “Help us to do the things we should, to be to others kind and good. n 2006, Sir Ken Robinson sparked a national dialogue about creativity in education via his TED talk titled “Do Schools Kill Creativity?” Over 10 years and 42,407,720 hits later, how to foster creativity continues to be a vital question for educators across disciplines.

As with any intangible term, “creativity” has definitions that vary. According to Sparking Student Creativity by Patti Drapeau, some believe it has to do with generating original ideas of value while others focus on having expertise and a high level of divergent skills. Walking across campus on a Tuesday afternoon, a visitor might see students intently mixing paints at their easels, taking photographs from different perspectives, or engaged in the thrill of a competitive scavenger hunt. While engagement is at the core of each of these activities, each is carefully designed to increase rigor and understanding in its content area.

In the middle school, creativity is at the center of what we do as educators who know and love this unique age group. In English, students are making short movies from scenes of Harry Potter and demonstrating the wonders of magic through technology. In their study of Persepolis, they are creating pieces of propaganda about one of their beliefs and discussing the ways beliefs have the power to bring people together or create division. In Spanish, students are describing their bedrooms in the target language to a partner, who in turn draws the bedroom from the description. In history, students are creating a quilt about historical elections with information about the candidates and issues of that time. In the science labs, students are creating a superhero about an element, complete with element-appropriate super powers and origin stories. Other students are dissecting toys in teams to create a spinning device that affects how plants grow.

While planning such activities takes dedication and innovation, our teachers understand how much this type of learning benefits our students.

“Allowing them to create enables them to connect with concepts in a way that is more personal to them. It activates a different part of the brain and helps them understand the concept more fully,” notes middle school science teacher Jennifer Crandall.

“Using creative projects helps engage students more and allows them to create their own responses to the content,” says English teacher Stephanie Farley.

Students too are clear about the value of creativity and its effect on their learning. When we speak to students on the quads, they recognize how much visualizing an idea or concept helps them retain the information. Working on a challenge in groups helps them build their patience and improve their teamwork skills. Thinking outside the box encourages them to be more experimental and try new things.

In the words of one 8th grade student, “Taking photos helps you learn more about yourself and your opinions. What you see in a picture helps you understand how you reflect on things and what you value.” Perhaps most importantly, creative projects are, simply put, more fun. One student notes, “In English, we use a lot of glitter: it makes everything better.”

Not even Sir Ken Robinson can argue with that.

Servant Leadership: Enriching the Lives of Others

USEFULHONORABLE COMPASSIONATE

“The purpose of life...is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.”

Though its origin is unclear, some attribute this quotation to Ralph Waldo Emerson—philosopher, poet, essayist of the 19th century—who wrote often about the relationship of the individual to the surrounding world. In order for each one of us to reach our full potential, he argues, it is necessary to engage in selfless action in order for us to develop into our truest selves.

By selfless he means behaving towards others as if we have no ego to protect, no pride to maintain, no worry about what others might think as we act from what one could call a place of purity and authenticity.

This transcendentalist notion that the purpose of one’s life is found in usefulness complemented by honor, compassion, and selflessness has roots in an idea that appeared more than 2,000 years ago in the New Testament. In this letter, written by Paul during his imprisonment, he encourages the Philippians to imitate Jesus’ humility and service to others as an expression of true humanity. He says, “Though he was in the form of God, [Jesus] did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant” (Philippians 2:6-7).

These qualities of usefulness, honor, compassion, humility, and selflessness are components central to what some call servant leadership, which is such an important model for us as a Campbell Hall community.

We have heard Reverend Bull speak this year in chapel about The Five Pillars of Episcopal Identity, and he has introduced us to some of these values that guide our work together as an interconnected community of students, faculty, staff, administrators, and parents:

 Commitment to Contemplative Practice  Sensitivity to the Problematic  Servant Leadership

T

he actual term servant-leader was popularized by a man named Robert Greenleaf, who published an essay in 1970 called “The Servant as Leader” in which he wrote “the servant-leader is servant first.” This is a person who doesn't aspire to leadership for status, power, or material gain but instead seeks to be useful to others so that they may realize their potential. However, and this is an important point, “It is not about being servile.” This isn’t pleasing others at our own expense, submitting to others, making ourselves inferior, or disregarding in any way our own close care and flourishing.

“Rather, it is about wanting to help others.”1

Lest this invitation to leadership I extend seem daunting, I encourage you to consider New York Times columnist Arthur C. Brooks’ recent article “To Make the World Better, Think Small.”

Here he laments “the constant stream of tragic world events” and how easy it can be to “throw up our hands” in despair or overwhelm at the largeness of a task and to not do anything.

But, by thinking small, he suggests, we all have the power “to connect to our deepest values and apply them to a hurting world.”2 In fact, our own Campbell Hall core values of respect, compassion, honesty, and kindness serve us well as we each think about how we can bring our best selves to our daily lives:

Helping others: it is who we are at Campbell Hall and what is at the core of the genuine, true, and rich sense of community that distinguishes this place from so many others. It’s teachers checking in with students to be sure they understand a concept and to be sure they’re well. It’s coaches reaching out to athletes to both review skills and offer support. It’s deans helping shepherd families through challenge and difficulty. It’s senior mentors guiding freshmen as they navigate their first year of high school. It’s freshmen coaching and cheering on Special Olympics athletes here during Intersession Week.

 It’s greeting each other with warmth and empathy

While some may seek more public or formal roles as leaders like headmaster, principal, captain of a school team, or student choreographer or director, leadership is something that is within each of us. It is an activity we engage in, a thing we do, as we live our lives. It is not a particular gift or talent that some folks have and others simply do not. It’s not that some people are born leaders and others are just followers. Instead, leadership is an opportunity and in fact responsibility each of us has as human beings. And so, every day, with our actions that we choose, we have the opportunity to be helpful to others, to lead. And true leadership is rooted not only in opportunity but also in an understanding of obligation, of the moral imperative we follow that stems from the fact that we are all interconnected as human beings. And so, in our daily actions, we all must strive to:

 It’s choosing to be patient with someone even though we might be stressed or frustrated

 Be aware of others and mindful of our impact on them  Be empathetic and strive for healing

 Listen with the goal of understanding  Defend those who need our protection

 Act for the benefit of others and for the common good

 It’s noticing when someone is having a rough day and reaching out

 It’s choosing to speak up when someone else isn’t being treated well

 It’s making sure that someone who is alone doesn’t have to be if he doesn’t want to  It’s spending time to help someone study for a test when she could use a partner to review with

 It’s remembering to take good care of ourselves so we have the strength to care for others

Because to live well, as Emerson said, is to have made some difference. And making that difference can often be found in the accumulation of many, many small actions that reflect a way we choose to live our lives, a way of being. A way of being that is selfless and motivated by a desire to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, and to be humble so that each one of us can realize our own potential – as human beings living together in a complicated, interconnected, and beautiful world.

HOMECOMING A LOOK BACK AT

I take a moment to look up from my task. When I say a moment, I mean just that. A moment. Myself, Kena Dorsey, TV production teacher and local world-beater, and a group of willing student volunteers have taken on the Herculean task of live streaming the Campbell Hall Vikings’ 2016 Homecoming football game. We have just set up about a thousand power cords, four cameras, three monitors, three commentators, two sideline reporters, one video village, three French hens, two turtle doves, and some kind of bird in a fruit tree.

I take this moment though to look out at what has become Campbell Hall Homecoming. The stands are filled with parents, students, opposing fans, and faculty. There are two food trucks serving Latin cuisine and barbecue in the parking lot and, if neither of those options is your cup of tea, there is always the Campbell Hall Student Store for burgers and cotton candy. There is a Campbell Hall alumni tent where they are painting faces and selling Vikings sports gear. The undefeated Vikings football team is decimating Fillmore on their way to a very successful season. At halftime, the Homecoming court will walk out, hand-in-hand, to the middle of the field, and the king and queen will be crowned. Pictures will be taken, congratulations will be given, and all of this will be seen under the luminescence of the lights.

Oh my god, THE LIGHTS. Let me just take a moment to tell you the importance of the lights. For years, every query and every question posed in the athletic department was answered with the phrase, “if only we had lights...” Obtaining lights for the field is making the impossible possible. It’s Lewis and Clark finding the Northwest Passage. It’s Captain Ahab killing Moby Dick. It’s Donald Trump becoming president. Wait that last one actually happened. Bad example. It’s the Cubs winning the World…wait that also happened. It’s Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson winning an Academy Award. There we go. That hasn’t happened, yet.

But I digress. Back to this reflective Homecoming moment I’m having. I look out at the lit crowd and think to myself,

“How did we get here?” And when I say we, I mean the Campbell Hall community. What were the Vikings Homecomings of yesteryear like? Were they similar to the year 2016? Would I recognize anything or anyone? A parent I know pats me on the shoulder, and I turn around. “Can you believe it’s already Homecoming?” she asks.

I turn around and it’s the year 1986. Somewhere, outside the walls of Campbell Hall, President Reagan is caught up in the Iran-Contra scandal, Ferris Bueller is skipping school, and kids are hanging Kim Basinger posters on their walls.

Whitney Houston is wondering how she will know, Michael Dukakis is hiding, and the Chicago Bears are doing the Super Bowl Shuffle.

But here on October 31 in the sunlight at school, the firstever Campbell Hall High School Homecoming is taking place. I feel an uneven surface underneath my feet and quizzically look down. I panic for a hot minute until I remember that I’ve seen this surface before. “It’s grass,” I say to myself remembering the time I had to park on the back field due to Senior Key Chapel. The parents are barbecuing, the cheerleaders are leading the halftime show, and the spirit banners are flying high. The game has ended with Campbell Hall beating Faith Baptist by the score of 43 to 16.

The football team and the Homecoming Court, no doubt super-jazzed from their five convertible pre-game Homecoming game parade, celebrate the inaugural victory.

They prepare to rock out to Robert Palmer, Prince, and the Pet Shop Boys (at least that’s what I hope) at the formal, yes formal, Homecoming Dance tonight in the theater.

One of the coaches walks towards me, and I do a double take. His moustache looks awfully familiar, but I can’t quite place it. As he gets closer, it dawns on me: Borrelli! “Hey Don,” I say. A greeting that I’ve said a million times at school and which has always been answered with a big smile and a cordial greeting of its own. He clearly doesn’t know me, but, Borrelli being the gentleman that he is, plays it off as if he’s known me for years. “Great game, coach,” I say to him.

“Yeah,” he says. “Amazing day. You know the football team is new this year. I can’t wait until we have a couple of years under our belts. It’s really gonna be something.” I nod, and he begins to walk away. He turns back to me. “Also, we could use lights,” he says and keeps walking. I laugh to myself.

I turn around, and the year is 1996. Somewhere, outside the walls of Campbell Hall, Slick Willy is gearing up for another four years in the White House, Cuba Gooding Jr. is demanding that someone “shows him the money,” and Oprah is starting a book club. Cal Ripken is playing in every single game, a gaggle of unfortunate souls is doing the Macarena, and Alanis Morissette is questioning if everything is ironic.

1986 Campbell Hall Vikings But here on a beautiful October Friday at Campbell Hall, the Homecoming game is taking place. Unlike other years, the game is occurring at the end of an enthralling Spirit Week that kicked off last Friday with a DJ-led Homecoming Dance in the theater. The Homecoming Court circles the track before the game in convertibles led by the Brownie and Daisy Troops of the elementary. The Chanters, a singing group coached by Wayne Behlendorf, open the ceremonies with a rendition of “America, The Beautiful.” The football team takes care of business on the grass field beating Landmark by the score of 50 to 0. The crowd is amped up and exhausted after a long week of celebrating.

As I’m wading through a pack of middle school kids wearing Massimo and No Fear t-shirts and wondering why I owned so many of those in 1996, I see a familiar face in the crowd. She has shorter hair, but that is definitely Carolyn LaGaly. “Hi Carolyn,” I say realizing that she has no idea who I am. “Do I know you?” she politely asks me. “Actually, no you don’t. Not yet anyway,” I honestly answer. “Oh ok. Well, welcome to Campbell Hall. Don’t forget to get a yearbook,” she says. I nod and say, “I will for sure.” I’m always a good soldier. I would find out later that Carolyn was the yearbook advisor at this time, so that conversation made a lot more sense in hindsight. Incidentally, I found this out by looking in a yearbook. Isn’t that ironic? Don’t you think? A little too ironic? Yeah I really do think. Ok I’ll stop. I apologize.

I turn around, and the year is 2006. Somewhere, outside the walls of Campbell Hall, Facebook is available to anyone over the age of 13, Britney Spears and Kevin Federline are calling it quits, and Dick Cheney is having trouble hunting. Most people are trading real bowling for Wii bowling, Tom Hanks is saving Private Ryan, and James Blunt is telling me how beautiful I am.

But here at Campbell Hall on a beautiful day, the Homecoming games, both Varsity and JV, take place. I breathe a huge sigh of relief as I feel the familiar turf underneath my feet. Although, it’s the old turf with the black pellets instead of the nice new turf with

the brown pellets we have now. I sigh and realize that I am super spoiled. The fans are enjoying barbecue tri-tip and cheering on the elementary and varsity cheerleaders as they perform the halftime show. No dance or parade this year, mostly because no one cares about convertibles anymore, but Mr. Julian Bull, who looks exactly the same by the way, announces the Homecoming Court and crowns the king and queen in the middle of the field at halftime.

I make my way through the crowd, saying hello to Don and Carolyn and Julian and Lavoie and Freedom and Chaplain Hull when I see a familiar figure walking my way. “Oh my god,” I say to myself. The grey v-neck, the hiked up Adidas black pants, the boat shoes? It’s me at 25. I’m coaching the middle school boys’ soccer team at this point. “Do I really walk like that?” I ask myself completely embarrassed. I pass myself, and we both take a long, hard look. I’m really not sure what to make of myself. I’m pretty sure that one of us is smarter than the other but, sadly, I’m not sure who. We both walk away and turn back at the same time.

“Nice v-neck, man,” we both shout and keep walking.

I walk past the parking lot and towards the new building before I realize that what makes the new building new is that it doesn’t exist right now. I sit down by elementary and look at the campus in 2006. I think about all of the people that I have known at Campbell Hall. I think about the students I’ve coached, the teachers and administrators that I’ve worked with, the parents and peers that I’ve met, and I feel a wave of euphoria wash over me. The kind of euphoria begot by familiarity. I close my eyes.

The year is 2016. A parent that I know pats me on the shoulder, and I turn around. “Can you believe it’s already Homecoming?” she asks. I look out at the filled stands, the crowd, the football team, the cheerleaders, the food trucks, the cameras, and the lights, and I smile. I look back at her and say, “Time flies.”

Steve Kuechel was recently inducted into the Southern California Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. Steve has coached tennis at Campbell Hall for over 33 years and has led teams to seven CIF team titles and six Individual championships including five doubles championships. He has also received numerous accolades including “High School Coach of the Year” in 2014 by the United States Professional Tennis Association and "Coach of the Decade" in 2010 by the Los Angeles Daily News.

Kimberly Oden will soon be honored for her accomplishments in volleyball with the Dorothy C. Boyce Award, and induction into the first Southern California Indoor Volleyball Hall of Fame. At the Dorothy C. Boyce Awards Banquet, Oden and her sister Elaina (also an all-time winning volleyball player) will be named The Flo Hyman All-Time Great Women’s Players.

“This award means so much to me, especially since my dad is a Holocaust survivor,” said Kuechel. “It’s a great honor.”

“I am in shock that I have been chosen for these two awards. As I look at the list of those with whom I’ll be inducted, I am honored to be included. To be joined by my sister on this stage is an extra bonus,” said Oden.

The hall of fame honors men and women –– athletes, coaches, officials, media, executives, and certain others –– at the professional, collegiate, high school and community levels of sports. More than 280 Jewish men, women, and teams who have played a significant role in shaping the sports history of our community have been honored by the hall of fame.

After a successful career playing volleyball at Stanford University, Oden served as assistant volleyball coach at Stanford University, Duke University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Iowa State University. She is a two-time Olympic Volleyball Player (1988 Seoul + 1992 Barcelona games) where she was named Team Captain in both Olympic games.

The sounds of the season at Campbell Hall reflect the sonorous classical music of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite. From the celesta, to the piccolo, the oboe, violin, and trombones, the instrumentation lends itself to the suggestion of fluidity in movement, strong, physical aesthetic, and enchantment enmeshed in this classical ballet piece. This Winter, Campbell Hall celebrated its 30th Nutcracker in the Garver Gym.

Beginning as an afternoon of tea and dance 30 years ago, the Nutcracker made its debut in the Winter of 1985.

(There was not a Nutcracker performance in 2011.)

Campbell Hall family and friends gathered for this intimate event to watch dancers in grades K-12 perform under the direction and choreography of Lynn Pittenger. In 1986 the Garver Gym and Performing Arts Complex was completed, and the Nutcracker now had a home.

Carol Clarke Heyes ’80 and many other parent volunteers, in true CH fashion, made the costumes, regalia, small set pieces, props, and were very much part of the pre-production bustle from start to finish. Pittenger added roles like the narrator, Russian baker, pine forest, bonbons, the coconut dance, angels, and a pre-show by the High School Chanters and Elementary Boys’ Choir. Seth Warner ’91 recalled as a chanter, “It is the act of everybody cooperating to form one voice that makes the musical part of the show so nice and well worth the effort.”

Our Nutcracker production has always captured Christmas at Campbell Hall as a time for community support that is both realized and redeemed.

melange of classical and neo-classical ballet technique: contemporary and modern dance, narrative-action pantomime, tableaux, character and folk dancing. The famous score is rich in sound that evokes joy, sweetness, and allurement. During the early 2000s the Nutcracker was part of the curricular dance program, and students enrolled in secondary contemporary and/or ballet classes were assigned roles for the annual event. Kathy Noel choreographed the Nutcracker with Pittenger during the years that the Nutcracker was a required part of the curricular program. (Noel’s daughter, Avery Harrison ’25, performed in her first Nutcracker this season in the Family Waltz.) Our contemporary principal students had the opportunity to perform various movements in pas de deux, group numbers, trios, and a mix of hip-hop and modern dance. “It was a fun way to do new music while still doing [the] classical ballet. The surprise left the audience in awe.

I was in the group that came on when the music turned to hip-hop, so it was fun being able to see the audience’s reaction,” said Julia Oxman ’13. Any dancer who has performed in the Campbell Hall Nutcracker from 19852016 has been introduced to true agility and artistry. Risa Blewett Bastien ’86 said about her role as Arabian in the 1986 Nutcracker, “The Arabian required flexibility and balance. It took a lot of time to get in shape for it.”

Brenne Hoeven ’19 was cast as Clara in the 2015 Nutcracker. She was the first freshman to play this role. “I was honestly so excited to find out when I was cast as Clara. It was an insane feeling and such an honor. Last

(formerly called the Father/Daughter & Special Friends Dance). This waltz has been part of the Nutcracker tradition for over 20 years. Fourth grade dancers and their partners (Mom, Dad, brother, sister, Uncle, Grandpa or friend) meet on weekends to rehearse the twenty plus minutes of blocking and choreography. The Family Waltz is a truly delightful moment that is reflective and touching.

30 years of ballet at Campbell Hall is a remarkable thing to be part of: from the exquisite costumes, bright lights, to the Marley floor, handpainted sets, the pointe shoes, the layers upon layers of tulle, and the hands craftsmanship of each tiara.

“My inspiration comes from many sources.

But I’ve seen so many versions from Balanchine to the Marinsky, as well as the productions I danced in, that I have a wealth of places to draw from–and then there are the many times that the inspiration seems to pop up from nowhere,” Lynn Pittenger said Wilhoite about her process.

Our audience, now transformed into ballet enthusiasts and wanderlusts, leave the Garver Gym hungry for more dance and are treated to a reception of delicious confections.

Over the years, the Nutcracker at Campbell Hall has evolved into a fulllength ballet for students in grades 4-12.

The Nutcracker is now under the direction and choreography of Lee Wilhoite, (Family Waltz Choreography by Brandy Curry) and full production crew under the technical direction of Luis Delgado and Production Manager Megan Adell. This production is the season opening of the extra-curricular repertory dance program at Campbell Hall – a beautiful spectacle of accomplished dance, exhibition, and splendor. The set pieces, props, and 20-foot tall Mother Ginger are a sight!

Wilhoite’s choreography is stunning, captivating, and imaginary. Students in grades 7-12 audition for specific roles en pointe in the Nutcracker while the elementary dancers are assigned the Family Waltz (formerly the Father/Daughter dance), Mother Gingers’ Polichinelles, and Sugar Plum Fairy Attendants. At Campbell Hall the roles of Mother Ginger, Drosselmeyer, Clara’s parents (and at one point the Rat King) have been played by a Campbell Hall teacher for 30 years. There are 25-35 adults in the ballet and over 100 young dancers.

Max Beck ’17 Named a 2017 National YoungArts Foundation Merit Winner

AWARD-WINNING MUSICIANS

Selected from the largest pool of applicants to date, Max has been recognized for his outstanding artistic achievements and joins 691 of the nation’s most promising young artists from 40 states across the literary, visual, design, and performing arts. Winners receive awards, opportunities to participate in YoungArts programs nationwide and engage with renowned mentors, and guidance in taking important steps toward achieving their artistic goals.

“Mr. Whiting was a huge inspiration,” said Beck. Beginning in 9th grade, Beck wanted to try the upright bass. With Mr. Whiting’s encouragement, he came home one day with the huge instrument and told his family that Mr. Whiting said he could borrow it for the year. In just three years, Max has achieved placement in the Thursday Night Jazz Ensemble at the Colburn School, a 2016

semi-finalist win at Spotlight Awards, and now a National YoungArts Foundation winner. “Max has worked incredibly hard, but the opportunities all began at Campbell Hall, and we are forever grateful,” said his mother Anny Beck.

This year in addition to all the work Max has done with the Jazz Band and the Jazz Combo, he worked with Mr. Adell and composed the music to this year’s high school play.

Joanne Chin ’18 Places Third in International Music Competition

This was the second time Joanne had performed in the competition at Carnegie Hall. The competition was open to school students and adults of all nationalities and countries. All instruments, including piano, strings, voice, and winds were welcome to participate in the competition.“Performing at Carnegie Hall for a second time is scary as well as exciting. The first time, I was in the

orchestra, but this time I was solo. It was a great experience preparing for the performance, and many people supported me along the way,” said Chin.

Anna Kuser ’21 Selected for California All-State Jazz Band Membership

With over 1,900 applicants vying for participation in the California All-State Honors Ensembles, Anna was selected for inclusion in the prestigious Junior High All-State Jazz Band. Anna was the only junior high vibraphonist in the entire state selected for participation, and she will perform alongside other top student musicians next month at the California All-State Music Education Conference as she represents Campbell Hall.

As a school focused on the nurturing of decent, loving, and responsible human beings, Campbell Hall values outreach as a fundamental part of what makes our school such a special place. Outreach is at the root of some of our longest-running Campbell Hall traditions both in our community and around the world.

Chapels, class time, advisory time, and hundreds of volunteer hours go into making each annual program successful.

HILLSIDES GIFT DRIVE When our previous Headmaster, the Reverend Canon Thomas G. Clarke, began working at Campbell Hall in 1971, the school was already participating in an annual toy drive to support the local children’s home Hillsides. This drive began under the leadership of Campbell Hall’s founder, Dr. Alexander Campbell, which makes our partnership with Hillsides one of the school’s longest-running traditions.

Every December, students from kindergarten through grade 12 bring in new, unwrapped gifts to share with the Hillsides community.

Elementary has added to the tradition by collecting hundreds of pounds of candy (along with fun and festive piñatas) each Halloween to donate. Middle school and high school students plan their giving each year in their advisory groups and bring gifts for older residents of Hillsides, often putting their funds together to buy larger gifts like bicycles or gaming systems. The annual drive collects so many gifts that the Hillsides staff tell us they use the donations year-round to provide not only Christmas presents for their residents but also birthday, graduation, and other special occasion gifts.

Students bring their gifts to chapel, where the community blesses them, and a speaker from Hillsides often shares with the student body stories of the children who will receive these gifts. This year, Marisol Barrios, Hillsides

senior director of communications and marketing, came to campus to talk to grades 7-12 in chapel. She shared that the children who come to live at Hillsides have lived, at a minimum, in six different foster or group homes before Hillsides becomes their permanent home. This makes gift- giving at Hillsides an important part of making their residents feel welcomed, loved, and at home.

Campbell Hall students also volunteer their time with Hillsides.

Sports teams, like the high school boys’ soccer team, often go to Hillsides to run sports clinics. In the spring, the high school Thespian Society takes trips to Hillsides to offer improvisation classes.

Hillsides is celebrating 100 years of creating lasting change in the lives of all the children, youth, and families who pass through their doors. Campbell Hall is proud to be just one of the many organizations around Los Angeles that works in partnership with them.

HAITI SCHOOLS PARTNERSHIPS In 1984, the National Association of Episcopal Schools hosted their annual meeting in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. It was then that many U.S. delegates to the conference became concerned about the conditions of Episcopal schools in Haiti. A call went out to Episcopal schools throughout the United States to partner with a school in Haiti.

Campbell Hall was among one of the first schools to answer that call.

For many years, Campbell Hall, through small fundraisers and the generosity of families, sent annual donations to our sister school, Holy Innocents, in Port-de-Paix. Chaplains and other teachers including elementary teacher Kathy Allison corresponded with the leadership of the school via email in order to keep the partnership going.

Following the large earthquake in Haiti in 2010, our previous Campbell Hall chaplain, the Reverend Ryan Newman, traveled to Haiti to visit our sister school. He brought back photos, videos, and stories about the school and their community. He shared these with students and faculty, further enlivening this partnership.

In the fall of 2013, the Reverend Irnel Duveaux, then head of our Haiti sister schools, came to visit Campbell Hall. His visit brought new information about all of the schools under his care: Holy Innocents, St. Aidans, and St. Jacques. He spoke passionately about the struggles faced by the schools to pay teacher salaries, feed students, provide clean water, and repair decaying buildings. During his visit he implored students and teachers to keep all three of our sister schools in our prayers and to come visit him in Haiti.

In June of 2015, the first group of students and faculty took Fr. Irnel up on that offer to visit. That first group of travelers enjoyed a week of Haitian hospitality and good cooking as they visited each of our sister schools. At each school, Campbell Hall students ran a soccer and arts daycamp, which allowed them to form friendships with the Haitian students and teachers at our sister schools.

Following the success of this first trip, an even larger student group set out to travel to Haiti the next summer.

This group of students was so inspired by the stories of the first group that they held a fundraiser to support a new water filtration system for the schools. The fundraiser was so successful, raising over $100,000, that it is allowing our partners to construct much-needed new buildings on the campus of St. Jacques that include several new classrooms, a kitchen,

improved security for the school, and, of course, a new water purifying system. This summer, the third group will travel to Haiti and return with stories of new friendships made and a glimpse into a reality very different from their own.

M.E.N.D. CLOTHING + CANNED FOOD DRIVE Each year, the secondary school collects gently-used clothing, canned food, blankets, diapers, and other staples needed for the Pacoima-based organization Meet Each Need with Dignity. M.E.N.D. serves an average of 37,000 clients each month, making it the largest poverty-relief organization in the San Fernando Valley. Their clients can receive food, clothing, showers, job training, education, and medical services just to name a few. The drive starts on a Monday with a few cans of food and bags of clothes. By Thursday, the Garver Gym is bursting with enough boxes to fill the moving-van-sized M.E.N.D. truck that rolls onto campus. For the last several years, Rich Weinroth, M.E.N.D.’s head of their feeding programs, has joined the secondary school in a joint chapel to celebrate the ingathering of donations.

He describes coming to Campbell Hall as one of his favorite events of the year as he brings us new stories of the wonderful work that M.E.N.D. continues to do in our community.

OUTREACH GIFT FAIR In the elementary school, the Outreach Gift Fair is an annual favorite. It began around the holidays in 1990 as the Alternative Gift Fair, modeled after Alternative Gifts International. It was designed to help our youngest students celebrate the season by recognizing the needs of others and giving to address those needs.

Around Thanksgiving each year, every grade announces the organization it will be supporting. In grades 5 and 6, students choose as a class the nonprofit they want to support based on something their class cares about deeply. In their classrooms, students learn about their organization and do special projects to support and better understand that organization.

Students and teachers work diligently on presentations for chapel that educate their peers about the non-profit that each grade is supporting. Parent volunteers can be seen outside each chapel with “shopping lists” of projects for families to support. The shopping lists include class projects and organizations families can give to in honor of family, friends, teachers, and other loved ones for the holidays.

Each child is encouraged to support the class project by earning money for it ($3 in the primary grades and $5 in the upper grades) at home by doing extra chores. Students love to tell stories of how they earned the money to support their class project through taking care of pets, doing extra dishes, and helping their families in other ways. This year, elementary classes supported projects such as training seeing-eye dogs, food and diapers for a local food pantry, reforestation through Tree People, and providing sterile birthing supplies to mothers in developing countries.

BLOOD DRIVES According to the Red Cross, every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood, and about 36,000 units of red blood cells are needed every day to supply this need.

Campbell Hall supports blood donation by holding two blood drives a year. The school partners directly with hospitals like Providence, UCLA, and Children’s Hospital LA to hold these drives in

the Garver Gym. The blood drives began in the spring of 2005 when a Campbell Hall high school student was admitted to UCLA. Parents and students were looking for ways to help, and a community member suggested a blood drive. It was such a success that it quickly became a new school tradition. Campbell Hall families and students who are old enough to donate always show up enthusiastically for these drives. Nurses often comment on the friendly people they meet while doing blood drives at our school. In December, the blood drive for Children’s Hospital LA resulted in 52 people donating with a collection of enough blood to save 105 lives.

BIG SUNDAY Big Sunday began in 1999 as a day of service all over Los Angeles. Soon, synagogues, churches, local business, and schools were signing up to create projects for volunteers.

Campbell Hall was quick to become a service site for Big Sunday, and the program has grown each year.

Big Sunday is always an exciting day on campus as student and parent volunteers wear Big Sunday t-shirts and are immediately put to work. In the elementary, each grade supports a project or collects donations for an organization. These range from collecting books and games for LA Family Housing to creating paracord bracelets for soldiers through Operation Gratitude to selling baked goods to support our sister schools in Haiti.

The middle school holds a clothing drive to support M.E.N.D., and high school clubs set up individual booths to collect or create items needed by organizations. The high school Green Team works with LA Recycles to collect e-waste.

BRINGING TO A TOWN NEAR YOU S TUDEN T S P O TLI GH T

LUKE TRESTER ’17

Earlier this year, Luke Trester ’17 began working on a charitable initiative to create affordable housing and social reintegration for homeless women as well as teenage girls in the process of being released from foster homes.

“I’ve enjoyed doing community service through Campbell Hall and began looking for new ways to participate beyond the required hours. When I discovered how bad homelessness is in our city, I had to get involved. I had been building sets for the school’s theatre department and thought those skills could be put to use building houses,” said Trester.

Partnering with Alexandru Ciorobea, president and CEO of Together for Development, a 501(c)3 nonprofit specializing in complex socio-economic projects, Luke has begun planning a daring “housing first” project using recycled shipping containers and renewable resources to create self-sustaining communities for homeless women and vulnerable girls ages 18 and older.

“HopeTown” is designed to begin as a pilot project with 20 residents who will enjoy fully equipped individual living units as well as on-site 24/7 mental health assistance, vocational training services, security, a recreation center, and a dedicated administrative staff.

In addition, the project will include some on-site businesses that will be run by the residents themselves. HopeTown will thus have a double focus: prevention of homelessness, in the case of deinstitutionalized young women; and rehabilitation of homeless women through facilitation of a speedy social and economic reintegration process.

“Homelessness is one of the biggest challenges facing Los Angeles. I realized how bad it was when people started living in our neighborhood park after the city forced them off Skid Row. I felt bad that they had to endure a lack of shelter and safety, and I wanted to do something about it. We hope that the success of this forward-looking project will allow it to expand not only in California but throughout the US,” said Trester.

Fundraising has begun for HopeTown, and an Indiegogo campaign is being created to help raise funds for developing the project through its different stages. The overall cost of this groundbreaking endeavor is estimated at $1.5 million.

As a model to our students of true heroism, veterans from our school community came together to discuss their experiences in Army and Navy service in celebration of Veteran’s Day. Elementary, middle, and high school chapels featured stories from the four veterans (l-r: Paulie Parouse, Kevin Kelley, Nicholas Lane ’97, and Colonel Raymond Lane), who spoke about what led them to enlist and the leadership roles and responsibilities they engaged in while protecting our country’s freedom. Students in the Global Studies and American History classes were treated to a special visit from the veterans, who explained the importance of Veteran’s Day. A reception was held in the veterans’ honor to thank them for their service. The Grandparents’ Committee generously distributed red poppies (pictured left) to each student as a national symbol of remembrance.

Grandparent of Aidan Feldman ’17, Declan Feldman ’20, Wesley Feldman ’23 + Shylah Olmstead ’26 Mr. Parouse served as an Air Traffic Controller for the US Navy from September 1963 to April 1972 (during the Vietnam war but not deployed to Viet Nam). He was Stationed at Jackson, Florida Naval Air Station; Oceana, Virginia Naval Air Station; the USS ESSEX aircraft carrier out of Quonset Pt, Rhode Island; Quonset Pt, Rhode Island Naval Air Station; and Kodiak, Alaska Naval Air Station.

COLONEL RAYMOND LANE

Retired CH Faculty and Parent of Alumni Nicholas ’97 + Tara ’99 Col. Lane was first called for Active Duty in 1966, became 2nd Lieutenant in the Armor Branch, and was a graduate of the US Army Flight School. In 1969 he served as a Pilot in Vietnam (D troop, 3rd of the 5th Cavalry, 9th Infantry Division) and later as Platoon Leader and Executive Officer where he flew as Mission Commander. While in the Army Reserve, Col. Lane also served as Platoon Leader, Operations Officer, Executive Officer, Commander, and COSCOM Chief Transportation Officer. Released from active duty in 1971 to continue his college education, he served until 1996 in the Army Reserve and retired as a Colonel after 30 years of service.

NICHOLAS LANE ’97

Major Lane currently serves in the US Army as the Assistant Chief of Staff, Division Intelligence Collection Manager, 25th Infantry Division in Hawaii. His first assignment was in 2002 as Tank Platoon Leader in the 1st Battalion, 63rd Armor Regiment in Vilseck, Germany where he earned “Top Tank” and “Top Tank Platoon” in the battalion. In addition to various intelligence officer positions, Nick also served as an instructor and Deputy Mission Crew Commander on the reconnaissance jet JSTARS. His combat experience includes three tours to Iraq and three tours to Afghanistan. He has also served on one deployment to the Philippines and one to Japan.

KEVIN KELLEY

9th Grade Associate Dean + CH Teacher Mr. Kelley served in US Army Engineers in Germany from 1989-1993 with the 54th Combat Engineer Battalion (including handling explosives, detecting mines, and fighting as infantry). He served as Platoon Leader, Alpha Company Raider while deployed to Desert Storm, Platoon Leader, Delta Company Dragons – attached to ACE Mobile Force. Mr. Kelley was on active duty until May 1993 and served as a reservist until 1999.

THANKSGIVING LISTEN

Every life has a story, if we are only willing to listen.

Students in Ms. Blakeney’s 9th grade Ancient World History class listened to and recorded elders’ stories over the Thanksgiving holiday as a way to create primary source documents, to hear and learn about important life happenings, and to contribute to the world’s greatest collection of oral interviews.

During class “listening parties,” students heard about escaping a bombing and working for intelligence in England during World War II, adopting a child, leading anti-apartheid protests in South Africa, migrating to escape civil war, teen parenting, hiding from the Nazis in Poland, leaving a juvenile detention center, giving an alligator to new in-laws, writing about the current Syrian refugee crisis, and many more treasured, intimate stories. Connecting these experiences to major themes in world history, students concluded that day-to-day living is the underpinning of significant, historical events.

The Great Thanksgiving Listen is a national education project of Story Corps with the purpose of empowering high school students to record oral histories of their elders to be housed at the American Folklore Center in the Library of Congress and published through the Story Corps app. Students honed their questioning and interviewing techniques, technical prowess, writing skills, and of course their listening abilities.

STORY OF A WWII EVACUATION THROUGH ADOLESCENT EYES Francesca Lupi ’20 interviews her grandmother Lori

“Lori Sellar was 9 years old in 1940 when she was put on a train with her younger brother. What they did not know was that they were being evacuated from their London childhood home because of World War II and that they would not be seeing their family for quite a long time. After the lengthy train ride from London to Cornwall, Lori was placed in a house and separated from her brother. This was just the beginning to the rest of Lori's life, which involved moving from house to house in Cornwall and Wales and finding ways to grow up, essentially on her own. This tender story of hardship and survival still surprises the listener with moments of humor and truth in Lori's rekindling of her memory. This interview took place on the telephone between Lori, now 86-years-old and living in London, and her granddaughter, Francesca Lupi, 15 years old and living in Los Angeles. This cross-global interview occurred on November 24, 2016. Through talking with her grandmother, Francesca learned the value of having strength and resilience when faced with the most difficult hardships and that one can still end up with a sense of fulfillment in life.”

THE GIFT OF LOSS Melanie Rabishaw ’20 interviews her grandmother Lynn

“Melanie interviewed her grandmother Lynn in Arizona to gain insights regarding the adversity and joy of adopting a child.

After three miscarriages, Lynn and her husband Mike decided it was important for them to start a family, so, in 1967, they elected to pursue the adoption of an infant boy they named Russell. When Russ was nearly three and Lynn and Mike lived in Arlington Heights, Illinois, they informed Russ that he was adopted. This cherishable moment is described in detail at 4.44 - 6.43. Russ is now a father of nine-year-old twins who have questions and curiosity about their father’s childhood.

Lynn shared with Melanie the twins’ views on adoption, which are consistent with how young children might view the topic.

Lastly, Lynn expresses her opinion about the birth mother and her painful choice; tears of gratefulness are shed as evidence of how much she loves her son.”

THE MISCONCEPTIONS OF A BROKEN CITY Maya Hoffman ’20 interviews her grandfather Stephen

“I, Lola Carino, interviewed my grandmother Diane Handal. In 1999, Diane graduated from Columbia journalism school. This job [as a journalist] entails traveling to dangerous places in the Middle East, interviewing people who are hiding from war, and writing stories exposing the terror ISIS brings to these people. Diane isn’t going to run back to Manhattan; she's not afraid. With this danger comes helping people, and as she says, ‘Fear is the farthest thing in my mind.’ All you need is a pen to share your story, so watch as I share hers.”

“In this interview, 15-year-old Maya Hoffman interviews her grandfather Stephen Hoffman about living his entire life in Detroit, Michigan. Stephen speaks about growing up in Detroit in the 1940s, the white flight of the 1950s, the loss of faith in the community during the riots in 1967, and the regained feeling of community that resulted from the Detroit Tigers winning the World Series in 1968. Stephen also speaks about the common misconceptions of Detroit. Even though Detroit has a reputation of a dying city, it has an abundance of natural resources, and with the onset of climate change, Detroit is positioned to become one of the world’s most stable cities.

We learn how we should not judge a city from what we hear until we experience it for ourselves. And what may seem tragic on the surface actually may contain a hidden treasure.”

“I, Ryan Wollaston, interview my grandpa Murray Hochman about his job at NASA. Murray Hochman built and monitored US defense missiles. The 75-year-old father of two daughters and four grandchildren worked at Boeing from 1965-2013.

The contentious climate of American and Russian relations during this time in history influenced Murray and his team.

The threat of communism forced them to go to Russia and further investigate.”

LOVE AT FIRST BRUSH Bryce Jacobs ’20 interviews his grandfather Herman

“Long before Tinder and OkCupid, couples had to meet in more creative ways. In November of 2016, 14-year-old Bryce Jacobs interviewed his grandfather Herman Jacobs to learn how he and Bryce’s grandmother found each other. The story takes place in 1963 in Beverly Hills, and it includes Fuller Brushes, random photos, and even in the seventh minute, a baby alligator. Through his grandfather’s story, Bryce learns that finding love can happen in the most unexpected ways.”

“Sherry Bower explains how in Orange County, California, during the 1980s, she applied the motivation she developed from discrimination against women to prove herself and advance in the commercial real estate company Coldwell Banker Richard Ellis. CBRE was and still is a male-dominated company, which made it significantly difficult for Sherry to be accepted and to achieve higher and more prestigious positions within CBRE. She expresses to the interviewer Katherine Bower, her granddaughter interviewing her from California, her advice to women who are currently being discriminated against and shares some of her hardest experiences in the workplace. Sherry conveys that you should always believe in yourself and work hard to prove that you are worthy no matter your gender. She tells us that you have to see challenges ‘as mountains you can climb, not mountains that stop you.’”

Russell Gordon ’12, senior wide receiver for the University of Pikeville, was honored with the 2016 Mid-South Conference East Division Champions of Character award.

Gordon was named an NAIA ScholarAthlete and is a two-time Academic AllMSC selection. He volunteered as a youth coach and referee at the Pikeville YMCA and created the facility’s first youth volleyball and dodgeball leagues. Gordon spends time volunteering at the Hospice of the Bluegrass visiting with residents of the senior-citizen center, and he even organized a gift-basket program.

Tell us what you’ve been up to since graduation.

Since graduation I’ve focused on building my career in the animation and entertainment industry. I graduated in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts in Animation & Minor in Studio Arts from Loyola Marymount University. After LMU, I decided to go back to school for two more years at the Gnomon School of Visual Effects in Hollywood where I enrolled in specialized training with top industry professionals to learn high-end 3D computer graphics software and programs. I graduated Gnomon in 2009. Since completion of my schooling, I have worked professionally all over the industry in studios and as an independent contract freelance artist. I look at myself as somewhat of a “creative Swiss Army Knife” whether it’s pencil or pixels. I do a little bit of everything. For the past six years I have been working at MBA Productions in Irvine, California, which is a company that specializes in live creative and entertainment experiences ranging from car shows to theatrical productions. My primary role at the studio, and 99% of what I do, is working with one of our biggest clients, The Walt Disney Company, helping create from conception to finish live nighttime spectaculars and in-park creative media. I have been very fortunate to have had the opportunity to travel for work to Tokyo and Shanghai for the opening of their brand new theme parks. In February I will be going to Paris to program another castle firework projection mapping show.

How would you describe CH to someone?

Campbell Hall is very special to me and my family. My mother and uncle went there as children, and then my brother, sister, and I attended kindergarten through 12th grade. Campbell Hall is really almost like a second home. It has truly been a delight for me to see the school grow right

before my eyes with the installation of new buildings and facilities. I was disappointed to miss my 10-year high school reunion, but I hope to return soon to take a tour of the new buildings and check out the football field.

What are some favorite memories from CH? Some of my most treasured memories were working in the theater tech crew and doing stage design.These are endearing memories to me now because I had no idea that it would eventually turn full circle into my current professional career working in entertainment and production of live shows. As a kid at Campbell Hall, I used to love when the school would coordinate the Olympics and the special food days. My favorite food day was “Hamburger Wednesday.”

My mother used to cook hamburgers with other parents, and then I would enjoy my lunch with my friends at the picnic table under the eucalyptus trees.

One memory that will always stick with me about Campbell Hall is of course the Viking fight song.

Service is one of the core values at CH. What service experiences did you have while attending CH? Campbell Hall has always taught its students to be responsible to others. Even from the littlest things like making sure your uniform looks correct to picking up trash off of the floor.

I got to participate in numerous different school activities.

There is no doubt that I was influenced from the staff and faculty to respect the environment and world that I live in.

In what way have you continued your service?

Service has always been a big part of my life. In college I worked in an organization called Art Smart where we visited underprivileged schools to teach art. After college I continued my service work in an organization called Reading to Kids where we read children’s books to kids and then created a craft that related to what the story in the book was about.

I just returned from a mission trip to Egypt. I was blessed to be part of a team of nine people who went to a small Christian village in El Minya, Egypt. Our primary goal was to help and serve the community there by raising funds to install a water filtration system that would give fresh water to an the entire village. When we were in Egypt, I served as the on-site trip photographer and videographer documenting our work and experience there. One of my other duties was to be the arts and crafts master. As I see all of the good work being done on our campus each and every day, I feel a tremendous amount of gratitude to be a part of such an extraordinary community.

I believe there is no greater mission than the social, emotional, and academic development of our children, which is at the very heart of Campbell Hall.

I’m equally grateful for the generous support of the schools’ parents, alumni, board of directors, parents of alumni, grandparents, faculty and staff, foundations, and friends.

Only through our community’s continuing legacy of philanthropy can Campbell Hall remain the outstanding and unique institution that is sought out by talented educators as well as by parents who strive to attain the best academic experience for their children.

I am truly inspired by our dedicated parents who continually seek to improve the lives of not only their own children but also the lives of children within the community-at-large. Three new programs, initiated and spearheaded by Campbell Hall parents and grandparents, were established to help fund the education of children who might not otherwise be able to afford a Campbell Hall education: THE REV. CANON NORMAN HULL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FUND FOR FINANCIAL AID A generous lead gift to establish The Rev. Canon Norman Hull Endowed Scholarship Fund has been received from Hal and Lisa Reynolds (Elle ’13, Will ’15, & Margaux ’23) to celebrate the tremendous impact Chaplain Hull has had on our community. Once the fund reaches its $1 million goal, Campbell Hall will have the opportunity to offer a full scholarship to an elementary family.

THE ELEMENTARY DIVERSITY & INCLUSION FUND Recently established by a group of CH parents, the Elementary Diversity & Inclusion Fund (EDIF) is a special designation of the Campbell Hall Annual Fund with the goal of increasing ethnic and socio-economic diversity at the elementary school. The goal of the program is to serve families who are underrepresented in grades K-6, particularly AfricanAmerican/Black and Hispanic/Latino families. Donations to EDIF are in addition to annual and endowment gifts.

THE CAMPBELL HALL LEGACY SOCIETY Recently reinvigorated by Campbell Hall grandparents Ron & Sally Burns, The Campbell Hall Legacy Society was created to thank and recognize the generous donors whose bequests and planned gifts continue to expand the mission of the school. By including Campbell Hall in their estate planning today, Legacy Society members ensure a strong and sustainable financial future for the school. Typically, legacy gifts are devoted to the general endowment unless a different designation is requested.
