STUDENT LIFE

Campbell Hall is a community of inquiry committed to academic excellence and to the nurturing of decent, loving, and responsible human beings.

We believe that asking thoughtful questions is the engine that drives curiosity, putting students on a path that can lead anywhere. At each grade level, Campbell Hall provides a sequential, challenging, and engaging curriculum anchored by social-emotional learning that gives students the support needed to excel personally and academically.

CAMPBELL HALL MISSION

Academics

Academic Philosophy Statement

Campbell Hall’s unique academic philosophy rests on the idea of spiritually integrated inquiry and community. Joyful, purposeful learning and deep relationships with others lead our students to understand the wonder of something greater than themselves. Our faculty design rigorous, meaningful, and relevant experiences that promote curiosity, engagement, connection, and selfreflection. We value depth and breadth of content, the mastery of essential skills, and the internal motivation necessary for a life of intellectual curiosity. Courageous conversations cultivate the inclusion of diverse viewpoints, and ethical reasoning guides student agency. Student choice and individualized feedback motivate problem solving and risk-taking. Students in our care apply each discipline to real-world challenges and use their experiences as a path for justice. Each child comes to recognize who they are and what they value.

Engaging Curriculum = Engaged Students

Differentiated Learning

Through research-based reading and writing programs, experienced faculty provide a thoughtful approach to literacy while meeting each student’s individual needs with a collaborative teaching model and small group instruction. The mastery of math topics through problem solving, computational skills, mental math, word problems, and pictorial solutions is emphasized through the Singapore math program, Math In Focus. Skilled teachers scaffold instruction to address the needs of individual learners, leading to abstract computation.

The elementary science and technology curricula engage children in joyful discovery that instills an appreciation of our world, develops foundational skills, and promotes critical thinking in an imaginative, child-centered learning environment that supports children’s creativity and curiosity. Whether programming robots to dance, conducting a chemistry experiment, or designing digital art, K–6 students enjoy exciting, hands-on activities

that bring learning to life in Campbell Hall’s elementary science and technology labs . The social studies curriculum explores history through the lens of equity and social justice, creates an intentional space that celebrates identity and cultural heritages, and helps students broaden their perspectives and make connections between historical and present-day events.

Academic Enrichment Opportunities

Students can demonstrate and improve their academic skills through challenges such as WordMasters , Continental Math League (CML), and Campbell Hall’s annual Science Fair. They can also engage in interest-driven activities such as chess and grade-level book clubs .

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice in the Curriculum

The elementary school uses the Social Justice Standards (Identity, Diversity, Justice, and Action) as a roadmap for anti-bias education. Through these standards, students learn to express pride, confidence, and healthy self-esteem while affirming the value and dignity of other people.

Spanish

The elementary school Spanish program provides culturally responsive pedagogy to further develop an appreciation for the diversity of the Spanish-speaking world. Direct Spanish language instruction happens weekly for grades 3 and 4, while students in grades 5 and 6 have Spanish language instruction twice a week.

STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics)

As a driver of innovation, STEAM is an integral part of a Campbell Hall education. Students develop foundational process skills that empower them to formulate challenging questions, solve complex problems, and connect innovative (“what if”) and scientific (“let’s find out”) thinking with the creative medium of the arts. Elementary school technology and science labs are dedicated spaces where students can engage in hands-on learning that is fundamental to developing critical thinking and is at the heart of joyful discovery. The elementary school visual art , music, and dance studios offer students opportunities to explore and integrate practices across disciplines, igniting their imagination as they apply their unique perspectives to creative projects and build skills and techniques.

The IDEA (Inquiry, Democracy, Equity, Agency) Center

Recognizing the creativity, ingenuity, and innovation within our community, combined with a deep commitment to nurturing caring global citizens, Campbell Hall established a system for incubating and launching mission-driven projects and programs. The IDEA Center gives K–12 students agency and support to actualize enterprises that tackle current challenges and make a difference in the lives of others. The IDEA Center empowers individuals to become change-makers.

The Whole Child

Social-Emotional Learning

The elementary school program serves to meet the developmental needs of all students by strengthening students’ emotional intelligence skills with particular focus on mindfulness, self-awareness, emotional management, responsible decision-making, and healthy interpersonal relationships.

Chapel Program

Campbell Hall is a school of faith and reason rooted in the rich tradition of Episcopal education, which means we place spiritual development at the heart of all we do. We welcome people of all faiths, and our student body’s religious identification is reflective of many traditions. Chapel takes place Monday–Thursday, during which we gather to hear stories from the world’s various religious faiths and traditions, sing songs, enjoy student performances, listen to guest speakers, celebrate birthdays and milestones, and so much more. Chapel is a warm and loving way to start the day and helps students deepen their understanding of different belief systems, strengthen values of respect for self and others, and develop authentic community connections. Parents are always welcome to attend!

Visual Arts

Every child is innately creative and our art educators provide studio-based opportunities to grow and hone their creative habits and skills. Our Visual Arts department follows a process-based curriculum to guide students toward the use and care of various art materials and the employment of art techniques and skills. In our dedicated Elementary Art Studio, students develop their own creative practice and use their art to engage with the broader community.

Music

The integrated and sequential music curriculum throughout the elementary school years combines music literacy, appreciation, cultural exploration, participation, and performance. All children learn the basics of rhythm, melody, harmony, note-reading, and composition. Children participate in a rich variety of musical experiences, including vocal performance, instrument exploration, one-on-one sessions in our recording studio, and singing in the Campbell Hall Elementary School Chorus.

Physical Education

Through daily physical activity, students strengthen the connection between mind and body. Physical education classes offer sequenced and developmentally appropriate games, fitness, sports, and health curriculum.

All students in grades 4–6 are welcome to participate in the following interscholastic competitive team sports and are placed on teams depending on their skill so as to be appropriately challenged.
