PROCESS BOOK

The assignment: We were assigned two purposefully contrasting words, one tangible and one intangible. I received the words hair and heartburn, this is the collateral damage of that decision.

Brainstorming I began with my intangible, heartburn, assuming that it may be the hardest of the two to elaborate on, I was right. I began with a definition, after sifting through an immense amount of medical jargon I landed on one that showed a closer relationship with the English language.

It really wasn’t anything ground breaking however, so I moved on to triggers and reliefs, I found a couple interesting things/ connections but nothing substantial enough to expand on. I decided that I would let this breath a while and move on to my tangible, hair.

Brainstorming The brainstorming process associated with hair was a little less ‘dry well’ and a little more ‘too many forks in the road’, in short I simply scratched the proverbial surface of the concept of hair. Again I started with the definition of hair which, just as heartburn did, came with a lot of medical lingo baggage. After that I played

with the concept of synonyms, none of those hit a chord. I then looked to idioms that related to hair, that also didn’t get very far. I then looked up the word hair in different languages, I’m not sure where I thought that would get me, but it wasn’t very far. I decided it was time to move on.

Brainstorming This is an example of me following instructions. Action verbs are a brainstorming technique from our book, it’s fairly straight forward concept, one applies action verbs such as ‘flatten’ of ‘stretch’ to your word of choice and then one proceeds to sketch out the word flattened or stretched, etc... This manipulation of hair led me to the

concept of hairstyles, famous ones at that. I’m kind of obsessed with film and all there to associated with it hence the tangent that happened in sketchbook exhibit A <-- That didn’t really seem to get me anywhere, but hey what actually has so far, so I kept it just in case

Brainstorming Photo Story Process Final

Brainstorming As the brainstorming continues we branch out into word mapping, or at least an attempt at it. We begin with hair and all logic paths heretofore somewhat related and again coming up with nothing, nada, zip. Bad dye jobs and bowl haircuts can only get you so far. We

move on to heartburn. At this time my mind has hit a permanent wall, and the only way to break said wall seems to be to draw a ton of fried eggs. They will soon become extremely redundant.

Brainstorming

After a semi productive brainstorming session, semi being the operative word, or prefix in this case, I began to make connections. Most were random and dangerously close to unrelated relations, creepy second cousins that flirt with you at the family reunion if you will. There may be some workable connections but nothing too exciting. Oh and the redundant fried eggs are back and they mean business.

Brainstorming

This is a visual dump of all the things that came to mind when I thought of hair (left) and heartburn (right). As noted this is simply a sophisticated tangent. Not much came of this other than more fried eggs and a stronger understanding of how nonsensical the inner workings of my brain actually are

Brainstorming

This page turned into a visceral brain dump. I was on an extremely turbulent plane ride at the time and ideas were being knocked from the preverbal cobwebs within my skull. On said plane the flight attendants were attempting to sell pink lemonade for the sake of breast cancer month and a connection was made, not with the lemonade, with the cancer.

Brainstorming After landing on an idea that I may or may not have gotten too attached to, read cancer, I decided to take a sharp left. Instead of looking into the loss of hair I started thinking about the abundance of it. That train of thought led me to the superfluous amounts of hair found on the heads of 80s hair band members, a la Aerosmith, Jefferson Starship, Twisted Sister etc... This brought to mind visions of bad 80s music videos set to extremely cheesy ballads of heartburn. This is a potential direction.

Brainstorming

After finding 2 potentials I decided to take another left turn and began looking into acid reflux and the various definitions of reflux and later flux. This brainstorming led me down a rabbit hole that really seemed to have no return plan, I scrapped it. After gathering a few more ideas from friends, read ‘white girl wasted’, I decided to start trying to make concrete connections. Little did I know my end idea, relating the two through angel hair pasta, would come from a bunch of random connections I cooked up right on the spot (pun intended)

Brainstorming

After talking to Prof. Dorn about the strong connection that is angel hair and heartburn, I took the unanticipated connection and decided to roll with it. The idea started out similar to many of the other ones I had come up with thus far, rather than embracing heartburn, I was trying to relieve it. So, once the tums/prilosec advertisements were out of my system I decided I needed to switch up my direction a little bit. What if instead of offering a cure for heartburn, I offered a cause for heartburn? The idea of a heartburn inducing collection of recipes revolving around angel hair pasta was born. Now that title is kind of a mouthful so the quest for an appropriately succinct title began. After many failed attempts at alliteration and cutesy rhymes, a decision was made, the spread would be aptly named “Singeworthy: Angel Hair Recipes for the Masochist in All of Us” This recipe collection is far too small (more like I don’t have time to make dozens of pasta dishes) for an entire cookbook all to itself, so he’s going in a magazine spread, Betty Crocker here we come!

Brainstorming Photo Story Process Final The connection between heartburn and angel HAIR pasta is very strong and somewhat glaring, however it took me a little while to get to this point

This is a brilliant advertising campaign for a company specializing in freshly made angel hair pasta , I don’t know how this will help my end cause, but it’s hilarious

Brainstorming Photo Story Process Final Once the idea was conceived it was time to bring it into fruition. Apparently in order to make a good cooking magazine spread one needs recipes, in danger of seeming predictable, I looked to Pinterest.

The next step was again the dreaded Pinterest. I began looking into food photography and how people, mainly food bloggers went about setting up their food dishes.

Process Any good cooking journalism must always begin with lots and lots of ingredients, luckily me and the good people at Publix are on a first name basis. This is not all of the ingredients used for the chosen five recipes but its close. It may not seem extensive but my wallet will gladly disagree with you, but alas this was not only the means to an end in terms of my project but also a fairly elaborate way to fill my belly for a few weeks.

Process Thus began the laborious process of setting up an impromptu photo studio/functional kitchen set up. Lights were unfurled, slightly lacking backdrops were improvised, and props (and by props I mean the one least dirty dish rag that I own and any extra ingredients that may have been floating around) were procured. The kitchen/dining room combo was officially full up for all of Saturday. Moral of the story, my roommates are saints for dealing with all of my antics.

And with that food prep began! For the record I’m no slouch in the kitchen but I’m also not the most graceful chef. So other than the desired chopping that happened,we also experienced several skin cell casualties. I’m also not very strong willed in the onion chopping department. Moral of the story, literal blood sweat and tears were shed

Process

After food was chopped and fingers were bandaged the actual cooking began. I took about one picture of the actual cooking process, you are now looking at it. Side note: the lighting in my kitchen in the early afternoon is really top notch.

Once all food was cooked and photographed the design process began, reluctantly yes but it began nonetheless. The name was already thought up and a logo wasn’t necessary so I went about adding a little interest to the title as to not bore the viewer upon the very first glance. I’m actually quite happy with how it turned out. For further interest I tried to activate the space with a gray scale picture of a sprig parsley.
