Dear photographers, This issue we start off with speed photography. These photos are focused on movement and the excitement that comes with it. People have always loved speed, and nothing has changed. Motor racing is almost as old as the history of the automobile itself – since the arrival of the second car, people have begun to feel the need to compete behind the wheel. Different perspective, show different backgrounds, on the ground, water, in the air. When it comes to speed there are no limits, even our minds can compete, however on a different level :) There is also a photoreportage on speed of our amazing human body. From a Chequered History to the Chequered Flag Its address, Platz der Luftbrücke, tells one chapter of its history, and the massive main hall at Tempelhof Airport tells another; the flags & standards now flying in that massive hall tell of Templehof’s present fortunes, as the home of the FIA ePrix Berlin. I photographed one of the first Berlin ePrix in 2016, when it was staged on the city roads around one of the busiest junctions in Berlin; the chaos caused is remembered to this day. So sanity prevailed and the event returned to Tempelhof thereafter. Of course, the airfield has many other yearround uses – a recreational area for the citizens, offices, and as a memorial to the Berlin Airlift. When the city of Berlin was blockaded by the Soviets, the other WW2 Allies flew supplies in and dropped them into the city centre. From bombs to bread. But for the weekend of the 14 & 15 May 2022 the flags were flying for the 2022 Berlin ePrix and I was an accredited photographer for the event. I arrived in Berlin a few days before the event and was on site on the Thursday & Friday preceding the race weekend to collect my pass, attend safety briefings, and generally gaze in wonder that this cacophony of chaotic construction could be ready in time. Miles of cabling,

mountains of scaffolding, riggers sawing, drilling and riveting. The buildup & breakdown of big events is awe-inspiring. (Could be a good documentary photo project ...) But ready it was, and over the weekend was home to 11 racing teams, 22 drivers, mechanics, marshals, medics, hospitality venues, caterers, and a fair few photographers and film crews. Plus thousands of spectators now that covid restrictions are finally easing. The Berlin event is a “double-header” with one championship race lapping anti-clockwise on the Saturday and the second race clockwise on the Sunday. These were Rounds 7 & 8 of season 8, 2021/2022.

Stoffel Vandoorne in car 5 Mercedes EQ As a matter of interest, the first ten cars home in round 7 were covered by a spread of just under 7 seconds.

History A few notes scribbled on a napkin in a Paris restaurant in March 2011 gave birth to the fastestgrowing motorsport on the planet. The notes were made at a meeting between Alejandro Agag (Formula E Founder) and Jean Todt (FIA President). Their dream was for all-electric street races and the result was Formula E. Now, in 2022 Formula E is an annual competition between up to 12 teams & 24 drivers which takes place in 10 countries hosting 16 rounds. Next season will introduce Gen 3 cars – the third generation – which are capable of 322 kph/200 mph and have 95% efficiency compared to 40% for conventionally powered vehicles. The bodies will incorporate linen and recycled carbon-fibre and each car will have a front & rear powertrain, doubling the potential power of Gen 2 cars.

will be offset as part of Formula E’s net zero carbon commitment • All Gen3 suppliers will operate in line with top international standards to reduce environmental impacts of manufacturing (ISO 14001) and be FIA Environmental Accreditation 3-Star rated It’s important to remember too that many of the features that have made everyday driving easier and safer have come via motorsport R&D over the years. Ask any driver of my generation what it was like

to drive a car with a non-synchronised gearbox, cross-ply tyres with innertubes, no power brakes or steering, no ABS etc. And so it will continue with Formula E as their R&D leads to better recycling of tyres, batteries & bodies, regenerative braking (google it – it’s worth a read), faster recharging and lighter, more powerful, batteries, to make everyday motoring a safer and more planet-friendly exercise.

What’s next? McLaren are joining Formula E and thus “From next season and the start of the Gen3 era, the only place to see McLaren go head-tohead with historic motorsport names including Porsche, Jaguar, Maserati and Nissan is in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship” says Jamie Reigle Formula E CEO.

RALLY SWEDEN Grateful thanks to: Hans Bäckström, Deputy National Press Officer and Accreditations Officer, Rally Sweden, for my accreditation and Katharina Wand, my muse, driver, eyes & ears.

Umeå “The Roaring River” A settlement where Umeå now stands was first mentioned in the 14th century and, by the 1600s, the settlement had grown to around 40 dwellings. Umeå is about 600 km (370 miles) north of Stockholm and ca. 400 km (250 miles) south of the Arctic Circle and is the nearest “big city” to where I live. “Nearest” and “big city” are relative terms: it is about 160 km (100 miles) from Lycksele Kommun where I live, and has just 130,000 souls living there. It enjoys a sub-arctic climate with summer highs of 30°C (mid 80s°F) and winter lows of -30°C (-22°F). It has many good hotels & restaurants, boutiques, a cinema, opera & concert hall, and was European Capital of Culture in 2014. And in 2022 it became the new home to Rally Sweden!

The FIA World Rally Championship The Fédération Internationale De L’Automobile (FIA) is the governing body of world

motor sport and the WRC is an FIA accredited event that began in 1973. Rally Sweden is the WRC Promoter in Sweden and has been based in Karlstad, about 800 km (500 miles) south of Umeå since inception. Over the last couple of years, the deteriorating snow & ice conditions that far south (no doubt due to global heating) have caused Rally Sweden to look for a new home “up north” and Umeå was chosen. I have moved house a few times in my life and can vouch that the logistics of even a domestic move can be difficult & stressful. I can’t imagine what it must be like moving a commercial, international, major sporting event – an event that requires hundreds of miles of road, spectator & media facilities, accommodation & infrastructure. Oh, and don’t forget Covid. All I can say is well done FIA, Rally Sweden, and Umeå!

The Event The event took place from Thursday 24th February 2022 to Sunday 27th. I began my application for accreditation just before Christmas 2021; fortunately I also booked hotel & restaurants at the same time. They were booked solid after Christmas. As I live in Sweden – and have Swedish citizenship too – I could apply for accred-

itation direct to FIA, or to the local promoter Rally Sweden. I applied to both, which was just as well because FIA rejected me (twice!) but Rally Sweden accredited me as a Journalist on 7th February. This meant that I was able to get into all the stages, and take photographs, but couldn’t enter the restricted photo-zones, which was OK with me. I’ve had this restricted access at other big sporting events and know it’s just a question of limited supply and massive demand for a photo-pass – not a reflection of your abilities. I’m getting a bit old for the cut & thrust of big events and realised that I would probably be on my feet for longer as a journalist than otherwise, so had to opt for lighter gear than usual for sports photography. I took an APS-C crop-sensor body with a 70–200 mm f2.8, (plus a 1.4 extender sometimes) and a full frame with a 50 mm lens. Camera settings for the action were auto iso (limited to iso 3200), 1/1000th sec, aperture f2.8 to f4 or 5.6. Burst mode and a fairly steady hand meant a good “keeper” percentage to choose from. The lighting in the evening was a problem, as every light source (car spots, gantry lights, track side lights) were all at a different colour temperature so I have, mostly, not tried for perfect white balance as it was not possible. Over the past couple of years I’ve really sidelined my APS-C body as it can’t compete with the full-frame bodies but – it does give greater reach. I gave it a good try-out with the 200 mm lens (and the lens extender) in the week before the event, and was pleasantly surprised. In good light with a high-enough shutter speed for the “action” it was more than good e nough.

Friendly, exciting, well-organised, and LOUD! That just about summarises my experience. And very close to the action, virtually track-side – certainly at the Red Barn rena. After a snowy start on the Thursday, the sky cleared and Rally Sweden enjoyed near perfect weather – not too cold, clear, good sunshine – for the whole event. The Historic event at The Red Barn Arena in Umeå, and the Sunday Power Stage at Sarsjöliden took place in idyllic conditions for photography and winter picnics.

Some Facts & Figures Let’s start at the end, and announce that the podium places were: 1st K. Rovanperä (Finland) & J. Halttunen co-driver in a GR Yaris Rally 1 - car 69 2nd T. Neuville (Belgium) & M. Wydaeghe co-driver in a i20 N Rally 1 - car 11 3rd E. Lappi (Finland) & J. Ferm co-driver in a GR Yaris Rally 1 - car 4 I was also interested in car 33 driven by Elfyn Evans. Son of Gwyndaf, a famous Welsh rally driver, their family car business is located a few miles from where I lived in Wales. Unfortunately Elfyn crashed on Saturday evening a few metres from the finish line (just seconds after my photographs of him) and had further problems on Sunday, which caused his retirement from the event.

In the dark. - All teams have to use the same fuel at €5.95 + vat per litre - The event was one of the biggest sporting events of the year in Sweden and probably one of the biggest ever in Lapland, with an estimated 100,000 spectators and 100,000,000 TV viewers world-wide. - The event was opened by Prince Carl-Philip, Duke of Värmland, of Sweden. - I don’t know how much the Red Bull Team are paid, but it’s not enough. They put on the most spectacular display! Yes, that really is a snow scooter doing aerobatics. I had a great time and, judging by their happy smiling faces, so did everyone else! I’ve heard since the event that Umeå will also host at least the next two Rally Sweden competitions, so I plan on being there next year. FuelFest had its first Phoenix event on Saturday, Dec. 4 2021 at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park in Arizona. Fans knew Cody Walker and Tyrese Gibson were slated to appear at the event and, at the last minute, Vin Diesel arrived to surprise thousands of car enthusiasts. Now in its third year, FuelFest blends the enthusiast’s passion for the automotive world with celebrities, live music, food, drinks and art. The show featured more than 600 top custom, exotic, rare, and exclusive cars and trucks. There were

car exhibitions, drag racing and drift exhibitions. FuelFest featured a massive live-action drift course that ran the entire length of the venue and a VIP lounge sponsored by Barrett Jackson. I present here an open project, which I started in February 2019, severely slowed down by the pandemic. I’m starting it again now, in 2022. All the images were made in the fields of Groendal, a small colored and black community that grew up on the slope of one of the mountains of the Huguenots Valley, in South Africa’s Western Cape, where hundreds years ago french protestants did introduce the vine cultivars in the southern area of the Black Continent.

The township is attractive because the area offers many job opportunities. Here, unlike other areas of northeastern South Africa, no tensions have developed between the natives and the new arrivals. In another open project, “Terroirs”, I follow the harvesting activities, in cultivated areas, while the present work is focused on the activities in the grassy fields. The vast fields are so interesting to me, probably also because in my imagination they are linked to Africa, after seeing the film based on Karen Blixen’s memoir “Out of Africa”.

In the high fields and in the low field, there is the beating heart of the recreational activities of the township: this place, Groendal, is considered the best social laboratory in South Africa: it is said that if an innovation or a “social experiment” works here, it will work in other areas as well: I am the only photographer who visits Groendal and its inhabitants, the leisure and work fields, I would then be the visual “singer”, not a mere reporter, of this South African positive experiment....
