I think it definitely has not been easy for my buddy to literally “freeze” for 10 seconds for the shot in front of Vestrahorn (Stokknes, Iceland) on the top of that sand dune. With gusts of wind with 25m/s it nearly had been impossible to take any shots. Blizzards kept on hitting the coastline that night and it had been challenging not to been blown away. But during the gaps we could witness wonderful northern lights behind the Vestrahorn. The clearing gaps only lasted for a few minutes so we had to be quick to take our shots before the next blizzard was hitting us again. Anyway though being sandblasted for the whole night (I found a “handful“ of black lava sand in my backpack back home) it had been a magical night and one of my favorite places on Iceland.

Great Gable is the mountain you can see in the distance, it’s a fantastic mountain that has 360 degree panoramic views of the Lake District National Park, on this occasion I focussed on it being the main feature of the shot rather than being up on top of it overlooking the other mountains. The shot itself has been about a year in the making, having to keep an eye on the sun direction and weather to ensure all the elements came together at once, February and March is a particularly good time for the low level sun and the direction in which it sets. So the plan was set, the weather looked fantastic and I packed for an overnight stay on the mountains. Laden with my kit I set off to ascent another mountain opposite Great Gable, but having left a bit later that I would have liked and with the lee of the hill being frozen it was quite difficult to get up on the edge of the mountain where I wanted to be without considerable risk. Being on my own I decided to stay a bit lower down and found an area which looked good to camp on, while waiting for the sun to set and the light to land on the hills further round I took a few photos of my tent in the setting sun and with the mountain in the background. It turned out to be a pretty good shot. I find that a lot of my photography focusses on mountains, I have always enjoyed anything that involves being up high wether that is climbing, hiking or wild camping, I have even tried my hand at skiing, although I am not too good at it. So naturally taking photos of mountains has become my style, I often like to get the big vistas of the mountains from down low to show them in all there glory, but more recently I have begun to go back up into the mountains to look for other locations and compositions.

RETURN TO THE ROOTS BORIS UNTEREINER This work is a kind of tribute to some photographs that my father made and showed me twenty years ago. I saw images of my mother blended with landscapes or various objects. My father explained me the process of how he created a double exposure on the same position of the film. It was possible to re-expose the dark parts of a film seeing that these ones were not affected by light. Of course, in the digital age, the process of creating a double exposure is quite different. The concept is the same, but the execution is very different. It is also less expensive these days, and the options are limitless. This method has been used in the opening credits of True Detective tv series. It becomes popular. Kind of return to the roots. www.borisuntereiner.com
