XEROSUN FI GURE OFSI X LEAVES’EYES ATROCI TY

CONCERTREVI EW THERI ON & SUPPOR O TS MELKWEG AMSTERDAM 0202-2018

Interview with Xerosun:

• Can you explain who came with the band name and why this band name? FIACHRA: I came up with the band name, I miss-heard something a DJ said on a radio station on my way home from work in the car. The nearest I could think he said was Xerosun and I liked the sound of it. To me, the name is the ultimate expression of an apocalypse; without the sun there would be no little to no life on our planet, its a pretty dark view of what Earth could and will become one day.

• Can you tell us who inspired you to play your style of music, is it based on more different styles that band members like? FIACHRA: There are several bands that I really like the sound of, bands like Sybreed, The Interbeing, SikTh, Spineshank, Atmospheres,

Soilwork, Periphery, Clawerfield and Skyharbor all influence me. It's a wide range of music really; anything from Agrotech to Shoe Gaze, Classical to progress metal, Technical Death metal to Trance. We all draw influences from various genres of music and I believe it helps keep things fresh and different. We also enjoy taking various aspects of different sub-genres of metal to write our songs, sometimes we will use an old-school death metal riff technique, other times we will use more progressive metal elements or industrial tones/vibes and often mash the them together. We never limit ourselves to any one sub-genre of metal, and will often go outside of metal completely to write music. GARETH: I have been into music for as long as I can remember, and I appreciate all sorts of genres. But mainly, metal wins every time. Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, and Maiden were definitely the front runners for me for a long time. Then along came bands like Prong, White Zombie, Alice In Chains and Paradise Lost. The latter have been and still are a huge influence on me.

• Can you tell us what guitar players inspired you with your style? GARETH: At the beginning it was the likes of Slash, Kerry King etc... but ever since I discovered Paradise Lost, Gregor Mackingtosh has been a major influence on me. Being a fellow lefty I was inspired right away. His lead and melody style are very simple, but effective and quite emotional at times and that's what struck me the most. It's not all about sweeps and super fast picking etc. FIACHRA: I'm a big fan of Carcass, especially the "Necroticism Descanting the Insalubrious" album era, the guitar playing of both Bill Steer and Michael Amott was a big influence on me and my playing style. Back when I was learning guitar, I tuned my 6 strings down 2.5 steps on each string, so that low E became low B and so on eventually turning a 6 string into a 7 string, in order to play in their tuning and learn the Carcass albums. Carcass, Napalm Death, Bolt Thrower were among the first bands I was exposed to, to have that low tuned sound, but to me the band that handled it best and still sounded great was Carcass. Even today, I’ll go back to Necroticism and listen and play

riffs from it. In more modern times, bands like Rings of Saturn, Animals as Leaders,

• Last year you bring out the ep ‘This Dark Rage’ and it was released by yourself and not by a record label. Can you tell us why you did it this way? FIACHRA: We decided to release it ourselves to see what would happen. We see the EP as only the first part of a larger concept that we want to investigate and built upon. The EP's songs tell a story about the "Craigslist Killer - Miranda Barbour" and both the lyrics and music even cross reference and echo parts of each other as the EP progresses. The lyrics were written from her perspective and deal with her reasons for the killings.

Are you currently busy writing or recording new music for

a new album and can you give us a peek inside this new record and some info about what is the album about title of the album, amount of songs and release data? FIACHRA: We are about to start recording in Jan 2018 in our studio in Dublin with producer Kris Norris (Scar the Martyr, Darkest Hour and Threat Signal etc) and we will be working 5 songs for a new EP. As yet we have no fixed title and no release date. We are pretty excited about the project, and we are really enjoying the new songs. This time out, we decided that we didn't want to be work within a concept, but instead visit various topics of interest per song. We branched out more in terms of the keyboards and drums, and we focused more on a kind of melodic industrial sound. GARETH: We have 3 weeks to complete it due to scheduling. This time round we have deliberately left one of the songs unfinished so that we can collaborate with Kris. This puts us under some pressure that we have never experienced before as we have always been very prepared whenever we go to record in the past.

• Something else about the writing and the recording is your band doing it the old fashion way (you meet in a rehearsal room) or do you do it by sending parts by email to each other and you finally plan a date to check in a recording studio to record all? FIACHRA: Its a little of both, we meet in our own studio 2-3 days of the week and do the majority of our writing and work there. We also do a lot of work outside of the studio; individuals will work on drum, guitar parts or synth parts or lyric writing. As the song progresses, we send around copies to everyone and refine as we go. We employ a few tools to make all this work for us; for live sound we tend to use the Axe FX II for guitars and bass, and utilize MIDI for changes. For mixing and song ideas, we use Bias and Bias FX from Positive Grid, its a great app straight out of the box, and we even released a few tones to the cloud, but our tone is always a work in progress. For day to day band discussion, we use a chat program called Slack to maintain band

contact, and mostly we use Logic Pro X for our recordings or song ideas.

GARETH: I suppose the current work structure we have in place at the moment is going to change dramatically very soon. I am moving to Germany in February, therefore we will be forced to work in a completely new way. I'm excited about how things will change both on a personal and professional level.

• Is it hard to make a set list when you are support act based on the playing time and to give to best songs to the crowd specially people that never saw you before and give you some songs that are fit to show directly the style the band plays? FIACHRA: Yes, it can be a challenge, our songs tend to average around the 5 minute plus mark, so in a 30min set we might get 5 songs in the time slot. We also have passage music between songs, so it can be complex to get a balanced working set. It is an interesting challenge

and it does allow us to try different songs in different order which can be useful to see how the crowds react.

GARETH: Yes, it's a challenge especially when you really want to include a particular song but it's too long etc. Editing a song for the purpose of fitting it in is not in our nature. Our last set list we used for our European tour came in at roughly 29m 40s which was perfect.

• Our slogan is ‘More Than Metal ‘and in this part, we like to talk about other thing like gear you use or tattoos or other cool stuff for fans. We were blown away when we saw you and that was because we never saw in band 2 guitar players that both play a guitar with 9 strings. Can you tell us what guitar you use and why this one? FIACHRA: We both use custom "Padalka" 9-string guitars, hand-made in Russia. The guitars are phenomenal and made from really high-grade

woods. The necks are constructed from 9 pieces of wood alone. My top wood is quilted maple and the paint job is brilliant, its a work of art. For our hardware, we got some parts custom made like the 9-string models of "Aftermath" pick-ups from "BareKnuckle" in the UK, and we use Hipshot hardware throughout the build. For me, we wanted to challenge ourselves with the 9 strings, and we also went fan-fret to get better tone and tuning on the lower strings. We chose to work with Padalka as we found videos of him hand-making the guitars on youtube and we were simply blown away at his skill, craftsmanship and attention to detail. He done videos of our guitar construction too. Please be sure to check out http://padalka-guitars.com/ for some of his fantastic work and tell him Xerosun sent ya!

GARETH: I agree with Fi, they are of exceptional quality and stay in tune so well. Light as a feather and the necks are very ergonomic. I don't have the longest fingers and I was worried that the size of the neck would make it difficult to play, but I was pleasantly surprised once I got my hands on it.

• Does it makes playing cords easy when you play 9 strings, or can you give it more melody to the song? FIACHRA: The 9s were used to write the new songs for the EP we are recording in Jan 2018 and they gave us great range over the songs, both in terms of brutal lows to melodic highs. As we have the full range (and more!) of a regular guitar, there is no real limit. We also tune the guitars down a 1/2 step on each string, so our lowest note on the 9th is a C1 on a piano... any lower would be more problematic we tones. We tend to take great care with our guitar tones and ensure the bass locks in well with them so that a large, thick and heavy sound is achieved without sludge or unclear fretting on the lowest strings. When writing, we try to take into account too that we can use the keys/synths to play certain melodies or hooks too and thus free up the 2nd guitar to play something different or double up to make heavy impacts. We tend to use the 9th string sparingly to keep it from being monotonous and use it like an effect of sorts.

• We also saw that you both got tattoos. Can you tell us are there special tattoos on your body or tattoos with a story and do you like to tell something about it?

GARETH: I have a full sleeve on my left arm. This hides an earlier tattoo I had which was done in the 90's and the quality wasn't great. It is meant to represent the evil that is going on in the world and I included an image of my twin boy and girl still in the womb on the inside part of my arm. They are surrounded by the evil in the world while being protected in a safe place. On my other arm I have a mashup of the Bram Stoker's Dracula movie cover and the "Cause of Death" album cover by Obituary. I plan on getting more in the future. FIACHRA: Sadly, I have no tattoos - yet! Mostly I find it hard to make up my mind what I would get, and I constantly change what I like/dislike. An interesting point on tattoos though, we have several fans that have the bands "dying sun" logo tattooed on them, which really blows my mind and is a pretty cool thing to achieve. We have also had fans draw and paint pictures of us and send them in. A pretty awesome gift to receive!

• Is there anything you like to add to this interview or is there anything you like to say to our readers? GARETH: First of all, thank you for taking the time to interview us. To the fans, we hope you will enjoy our new recording and hope to see you on the road, wherever that may be! FIACHRA: Big thanks to Cameraeye Magazine for the interview and interest in us, we really appreciate it! Cameraeye Magazine More Than Metal

Interview with Figure Of Six:

Who came up with the band name Figure Of Six and why this name? Matteo: We came up with the idea of different sources of sound in 2003 right before our first concert with the new line up of that time. Doesn't mean anything if not something like “representation of 6.

Alessandro, you are the new singer of Figure Of Six. Can you tell us how did you get in contact with the band? And for Matteo, what was for the rest of the band to say yes to Alessandro to join the band? Alessandro: After 15 years of professional activity like guitarist with a reggae band based in Italy, I was searching something completely new. I was ever fascinated by metal since I was a child so I started to looking for that in my area. After one year, in 2014 I finally get in touch with Peter and Matteo: they presented me the project and what they had in mind for the future. I wrote lyrics and melody for a

test song and we started a new collaboration. The test song was “Monster”, exactly the same you can ear in “Welcome To The Freak Show”.

You got a new album out ‘Welcome to the Freak Show’. First, we like to know who came to the idea to make this concept album and with this story?

Alessandro: When I joined the band, the other guys starts to speak about a concept album based on the ancient Freak Show world, since the beginning of our meeting. In that year (2014/15) I was watching American Horror Story Freak Show, on air in US in that period, so I was inspired by many themes inside the TV series. And it was easy and spontaneous for me to talk about my personal vision of the world and of the human nature, using metaphorical images catched by the Freak Show’s world. My passion for literature push me to follow the teaching of our Italian master poet Dante Alighieri, and I thought to organize the single themes of the concept like Dante split his “Inferno” in Circles, in order to create a chronological plot describing the human journey in to the oblivion, looking for the “Dark Passenger”, and bounds the 10 songs together.

We like to know more about how to create the album and like to know the vision from different points of views and we like to know about the song ‘The Mirror’s Cage’. What is the song about and from the vocals view was it hard to get the right motion at the right moment in the song and how long did it take to feel good about the result? Alessandro: “The Mirror’s Cage” is located in the middle of this allegorical journey, after choosing to walk on the rope and take control of fate (“The Tightrope Walker”). The mirror’s cage is the place where the Freudian “It”, “I” and “Super-I” collide together, allegedly during the struggle to understand the complexity of our nature, described in the lyrics like an empty, old, fancy and decadent hotel hall, with purple wallpaper, crystal chandeliers and voices of ghosts inside. This is the place where the Monster, the “Dark Passenger”, the “Devil”, the Evil” - call it like you prefer – live. And just after the destroying of this place it’ll be possible to face the Beast, according to eastern spiritual culture. In fact, this song has thousands of theme explained by complex images and I’m afraid to be boring… In short, “The Mirror’s Cage” is the middle part of the journey, between the self-misconception and the Nirvana. Talking about the vocal part creation, unfortunately there’s no story to tell, because everything happens naturally and without any difficult. Lyrics and melody was written after the main musical composition, on night, with silence and without singing. Just thought. And the day after I tried them on music and they were exactly like they are now in the CD. Yes, it is a hard vocal performance, but the technique follows the idea of struggle, schizophrenia, conflict and sacrifice behind the song’s theme.

Was it for the rest of the band to find the good music for ‘The Mirror’s Cage’ and was it hard to combine different styles in this song because we can hear in the begin a hardcore metal/ black metal part and following by prog rock part? Matteo: this song is 100% written by Alessandro. Music and lyrics. We worked together on some arrangements but really it's made 100% by him. I can tell you it's all really natural even if you hear so

many different styles on it. We just share riffs that work together, try it with programmed drums on our computer and suddenly start arrenging. Very natural proscess.

Peter your other guitar player stopped, and you do not look for another guitar player. How do you fill in the guitar parts that the second guitar player plays on the album or you leave it out and what will be the impact to the song without it? Matteo: We won't be doing none of you said (ahah) We will go on exactly the same way before with one guitar coming directly from our computer to the p.a and the other one played by me on stage and then out to the p.a. So the show will be exactly the same like before. Same parts will be played by me and by the “ghost” player.

Our slogan is ‘More Than Metal’ and in this part, we like to know more about gear and hobbies or tattoos. 

Matteo, can you tell us what guitar(s) do you use and how many guitars do you take with you on tour?

Matteo: I have some guitars, the one I mostly use are Schecter for 6 strings and Ltd by ESP for 7 strings. I bring the seven strings now as it's requested for this new album. I usually don't bring too many except for 1 spare guitar but shared within the 2 guitar players. Now it's gonna be only me so 1 guitar and 1 spare guitar 

Alessandro, did you ever go to a singing school or got singing lessons or you learn it yourself?

Alessandro: yes, I studied a lot and I keep on studying, because I’m a professional music teacher so it’s my job to be up-to-date and it’s my amusement to discover and learn new stuff. For example, since 2014 I wasn’t able to manage vocal distortion and supraglottic sounds. Luckily for me, in our area there is maybe the most

important phoniatrist of Europe, Dr. Franco Fussi, the only scientist who spent a lot of time studying the metal vocality with a real, scientific approach: so I start following his advices, I took class with a great vocal theatre actor, Mr. Matteo Bosi; meet other teachers, singers, actors, voice over actors, interested in vocal distortion and supraglottic sound. I’ve built my vocal attitude in the direction I want to follow for this project and now I’m teaching to other students a safe and creative way to learn and mastering the vocal distortion in my Music Academy based in Cesena, “Accademia 49”.

Can you both give us your top 5 favourite all time bands?

Alessandro: Doors, Tool, John Mayer Trio, Lamb Of God, GNR

Matteo: Tool, Metallica, Guns 'n' roses, Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden 

Matteo can you give us your top 5 guitar players and Alessandro can you give us your top 5 favourite singers?

Alessandro: Chris Cornell, Jeff Buckley, Michael Jackson, Freddy Mercury, John De Leo. Matteo: Slash, Randy Rhoads, Joe Satriani, Marty Friedman, Jimmy Page



Who of you got tattoos and what did you got tattooed on you and why?

Alessandro: I start tattooing myself at 30 yo and I have 4 tattoos: the first one is the representation of “Monster”; the second one is “The Mirror’s Cage” and the third one is “Edward Mordrake” as well as the front cover of “Welcome To The Freak Show”. The project is to complete the representation of each songs. The fourth one has nothing to do with our album: is the “Sons Of Anarchy” logo, the TV series made by Kurt Sutter, because I meet Mr. Happy on a tattoo convention and he tattooed me. Matteo: I'm tattooed but only one in my calf made 20 years ago. It's kind of Samoan tribal. Honestly, I needed to be tattooed at 17 so there's not a strong idea behind it. It's good looking and I still like it after so many years. Lucio, our bass player, got many. Like ten, all very cool. Some based on the new album/band. One is FIGURE OF SIX logo and one is based on Edward Mordrake, character inspiring the song 4 of the new album. Both legs, one is a card representing “the king” and the other one is a “medusa”. On the calf an Indian deity, on both feet, a diamond on one foot surrounded by a horseshoe on the other one a skull with a rose. Right harm all covered by a Japanese inspired tattoo with an ancient samurai, on the chest a tattoo dedicated to his family.

Is there anything you like to add to this interview or anything you like to say to our readers? Thanks for your attention and wish all readers a good time reading about Figure Of Six. Leaves’ Eyes – Sign Of The Dragonhead

Release date: 17 January 2018. Label: AFM Records

Members: Elina Siirala – Vocals Alexander Krull – Vocals Thorsten ‘Tosso’ Bauer – Guitars, Bass Pete Streit – Guitars Joris Nijenhuis – Drums

Track list: Sign Of The Dragonhead Across The Sea

Like A Mountain Jomsborg Völva Riders On The Wind Fairer Than The Sun Shadow In The Night Rulers Of The Wind And Waves Fires In The North Waves Of Euphoria

Before we start this cd review we must say that 2017 was not an easy year for Leaves’ Eyes. Some little cracks in the band what let to the result in the break between Liv and the rest of Leaves’ Eyes and the departure of Liv from Leaves’ Eyes. They found a new singer Elina Siirala and with her they finished the rest of planned tour in 2017.

Now they came strong back in 2018 with the first studio album with the new singer as their front woman. Leaves’ Eyes is back, and they are strong then ever and they are ready to fight like Vikings.

For ‘Sign Of The Dragonhead’ the lyrics are all about the Vikings and they often use this theme on previous albums and they also use it during concerts.

Something that is also interesting is the fact that ‘Tosso’ not only play guitar but he is also doing all the bass guitar part on the album.

Now let talk about the album what can we expect from the album and how does Elina will do it as the new front woman for Leaves’ Eyes’?

The album is not only fit for female fronted metal fans but also for Pegan, Folk and Viking metal fans. They use many Folk instruments to get the right sound to the song, but they also asked the help of Victor Smolski’s Almanac Symphony Orchestra and London Voices soundtrack choir.

Also, the add of special effects like to hear it rains or the wind or the sound of the sea makes it nicer to listen to the songs and closing your eyes you can imagine everything if it happens now.

Alex is known of his singing the chorus and growling.

And of course, his biggest role is he is the producer, and everything is recorded in his studio and he makes a master cd with a great sound and special effects at the right moments.

It is very hard to pick out our best songs because there are so many good songs on this album. It is opening the door to a new era and we are sure in the years to come Leaves’ Eyes became bigger and stronger and will get Elina the crowd behind her.

Final thing we can say: this album is ‘Heeaalich’!!!

Atrocity – Masters Of Darkness

Release date: 08-12-2017 Label: Massacre Records

Line up: Alexander Krull – Vocals Thorsten ‘Tosso’ Bauer – Guitars, Bass Pete Streit – Guitars Joris Nijenhuis – Drums

Track list: 1. Masters Of Darkness 2. Menschenschachthaus 3. Gates To Oblivion 4. Devil’s Covenant

The four members of Atrocity shows us that while they also play in the band Leaves’ Eyes they got time to make music with a different style for a totally different band. With this ep they go back in time to the time when they played brutal death metal. The vocals of Alex come at his right he sounds brutal deep and dark and it gives you shivers when you hear him growl and singing.

Musical is also played on a high level fast and brutal guitar playing and dark deep bass and drum sound. The only minus is that is only 4 songs, but we hope it is a preview for the future and very soon they will bring out a full-length album.

Figure Of Six – Welcome to the Freakshow

Release date: 26th May 2017. Label: Bleeding Nose Records

Line-up: Alessandro "Hell" Medri (Vocals) Matteo Troiano (Guitar) Stefano Capuano (Bass) Michele Mingozzi (Keyboard) Antonio Aronne (Drums) Peter Cadonici, guitarist (left the band)

Tracklist: 1.Welcome to the Freak Show 2.The Man in the Dark 3.The Weak One 4.Edward Mordrake 5.The Tightrope Walker 6.The Mirror's Cage 7.Monster 8.The King and the Servant 9.Clown 10.But Deliver Us from Evil

The title track is directly a drawn in song. It is the sound you hear in the early years at a circus to get you inside the freakshow. And like by the freakshows at these circuses you never know what you get when you see the first freak.

On the album it is all about what you expect when you hear the first song and directly you will get moved into different styles in one song. To give an example of above there is one song that got everything in it and that song is ‘The Mirror’s Cage’ and this song is directly our favourite song of the album.

The songs ‘The Man in the Dark’ and ‘The Weak One’ makes us feel we listen to a prog rockband and we even can say at with some parts it sounds like Dream Theatre because they also play with different tempo’s in the song.

These guys really know what they are doing, and the album is a pleasure to listen to.

We are looking forward to a next studio album of you. Keep up making albums like this one. And we are really looking forward to seeing you on tour and to hear and see the band play this album.

http://www.figureofsixband.com/ https://www.facebook.com/figureofsix/

We specially like to thank Dorothy Demeester of Enso Music Management for the introduction to the band. Alessandro and Matteo to make time to do our interview.

And also, specially thanks to Figure of Six for giving us and the rest of the world an amazing album.

Cd review by Hans & Yolanda Clijnk Cameraeye Magazine More Than Metal

Therion IMPERIAL AGE Null Positiv Midnight Eternal Melkweg, Amsterdam, 02 – 02 – 2018.

For this evening we do not get 3 bands but 4 bands in total and the cherry on the pie is the almighty Therion. But before Therion will play it is first the band Midnight Eternal that opens the evening as first band.

This band is nearly new and coming from America. They make Symphonic Metal and they got only one release out so all the songs they play are from that album.

Raine sounds very good and Richard(guitar) and Greg(bass) are a good team and Dan (drums) is playing as fast as he can.

We know we will hear much more in the future from this band. After a little change over it is time for the next band that listen to the name Null Positiv from Germany. The style that is band plays is different then the first band and different if we look to the 2 other bands that will play after them. There are 2 things that makes it different and that is the way Elli Berlin sings that is a combi of growling and clean vocals.

Some of the songs are in German and other songs are in English and that is the second difference with the other bands and the way of singing looks like the singing of Arch Enemy or The Agonist.

Personally, we are not so a fan of this kind of music but if we look around we can see that the crowd is more moving to the stage and they enjoy this band.

Martin, Tom and Flo are the rest of the band and they make sure that the music is hard fast and bombastic but there was also room for a ballad and that was only with drums and a back tape of the keyboard.

Then it is time for the second change over and they prepare the stage for the 3th band of the evening. The next band is Imperial Age and they come from Russia. We are looking forward seeing this band because we saw a video clip of one of the new songs from the new album ‘THE LEGACY OF ATLANTIS’.

The band takes a lot inspirations out of the music of Therion but on the last album they also got the help of some of the members of Therion. During the concert the band got technical problems and it was many the vocals that are having the problems. Specially the sound of Alexander "Aor" Osipov is not loud enough and that is a pity.

But also, the other vocal done by Jane "Corn" Odintsova and Anna "Kiara" Moiseeva got some problems but here it is not so badly. They did spend a lot time in the stage clothing and that looks very good. We really hope that they find the problems that makes these problems and they can play a better show the rest of the tour. The band takes the time to thank all the members of Therion for the help and also for asking them on this long tour and then they start to play the final song and make place for the cherry on the pie the band Therion.

The change over is done and earlier then it was announced on the website of the hall the light goes out and it is showtime. The band entre the stage and the first thing we can see is that is band does everything to give the crowd the wow effect. The stage clothing every band member got on is really a lust for the eye. Christofer Johnsson looks if he step out the Victorian time so directly on stage and it looks very cool. But also, Thomas Vikstrรถm and his daughter Linnea Vikstrรถm spend much time to dress up correctly and it looks very good. There is nothing to complain about the light is good and the sound is perfect and stand as a house.

The tour is all about the upcoming new Rock opera project album ‘Beloved Antichrist’ and the album will be released on 09 -02 -2018 and we can say that a part of the tour may be called a pre-release shows.

We see many shows of Therion in the past, but we know that every concert is a big surprise and Christofer Johnsson knows very well how to select a group of band members that know how to play and sing his creations on a perfect way. The second female vocal are now done by Chiara Malvestiti and she done more than her best and she make a good perfect job and the interaction between her and Thomas Vikström and Linnea Vikström is like an oiled machine.

Nalle Pühlsson, Christian Vidal and Sami Karppinen makes sure that the music sound perfect and totally support Christofer Johnsson with the musical journey. If you missed this concert in the Netherlands, the band will come another time and that will be 07 – 04 -2018 at the 013 in Tilburg Netherlands. Thank you very much Therion and all the support bands for this evening and for your music.
