A simple and useful instrument for international wedding planners: this is the main characteristic of the first edition of “Pisa Wedding Destination”, the guide reserved to specific locations (villas, historical residences, period residences, luxury hotels) and service providers (wedding planners, catering, incoming agencies, enterprise networks and tourist consortia) in the province of Pisa.

Living your “most beautiful day” on the banks of the River Arno or the sea at sunset; or enjoying your special day engrossed in the gentle hillside landscapes, between ancient villages, prestigious historical residences, abbeys and very old churches.

These splendid surroundings conjure up a particular charm that, beyond the romantic aspect, translates into business opportunities. Recent studies have estimated that for Tuscany, these opportunities are valued at more than a hundred million Euros, thanks to two thousand events that have generated almost 100,000 arrivals and 400,000 people attending.

This phenomenon, started with the fateful “yes” spoken by David Bowie in Florence in 1992, has literally exploded in the last ten years, and today it can boast a long list of famous marriages and others not so famous, celebrated between Hollywood stars, magnates, heirs, sportspeople, artists and regular couples.

Pisa and its territory represent a perfect synthesis of good Italian living in Tuscany: a territory rich in art, history, culture and sublime landscapes, enchanting villages and gastronomic delicacies that wants to be at the top of the list as an ideal destination for wedding tourism.

PRESENTATION OF PISA AREA The Pisan territory is made up of a mosaic of landscapes pieced together to form a unique land awash with colours, perfumes and flavours all waiting to be explored.

Pisa is the starting point to discover the province, an area not crossed by mass tourism, yet surprising because of the variety of its unspoilt and well preserved landscape.

The seaboard, only 12 km far from Pisa and at the mouth of the river Arno, is fit for families, groups, golf players wishing a quiet holiday between sea and pinewood. Marina di Pisa has recently opened a new marina for over 300 boats.

Around Pisa, small jewels like the 11th century Basilica of San Pietro a Grado, the 16th century Charterhouse of Calci and the Medieval fortified village of Vicopisano are worth to be seen.

The thermal resorts of Casciana Terme, San Giuliano Terme and Uliveto Terme offer relaxation, treatments and wellness all the year round.

Two Wine Routes and one Olive Oil Route cross the territory and offer hospitality mainly in farmhouses.

For a first hand feel for the territory, a farmhouse stay is just perfect. The old country buildings have been converted into accommodation structures set deep in the natural landscape and experiencing the territory, its products and traditions

Talking about food, San Miniato, on a hilltop halfway between Pisa and Florence, celebrates every November the National White Truffle Market: guided tasting, truffle menu, single museum ticket, an ideal combination between history and good “slow food”. Southwards, the Pisan Hills, the Cecina and Era Valleys are distinguished by both gently rolling hills and the original landscape of the “devil’s valley”, a geothermal area with steaming jets and fumaroles.

Scenic routes winding through an unspoilt scenery lead to medieval castles, villas, churches and villages, to a timeless atmosphere dominated by Volterra, a jewel of Etruscan, Roman, Medieval and Renaissance art and architecture.

Walk into an alabaster shop or laboratory to see how craftsmen continue a centuries-old tradition. Volterra means a glimpse into the past, into one of the most unspoilt areas in the region, yet near important art centres. Sea, hills, history, art, good food and wine. GETTING TO PISA

BY AIRPLANE www.pisa-airport.com The airport is about 1 km from the city centre, at the Pisa Aeroporto exit of the Florence-Pisa-Livorno dual carriageway (SGC FI-PI-LI), and the A12 Genova-Rosignano motorway.

The city centre can be reached in just a few minutes by trains that connect the airport railway terminal to Pisa Centrale station. A frequent city bus (LAM Rossa) connects the airport to the Central Station and the centre of Pisa.

The city bus terminus and the taxi rank are located just outside the arrivals side. Many car hire companies are also available.

By rail www.trenitalia.com Pisa Centrale station is one of the main regional and national railway junctions. Frequent trains run to Florence, Rome, Genoa, Lucca, Viareggio and the Cinqueterre.

The station is about 2 km from the airport and 200m from the extra-urban bus terminal at Piazza Sant’Antonio.

Outside the railway terminal, the taxi rank and bus stop for urban routes direct to Piazza dei Miracoli, Airport, Congress Palace and Cisanello Hospital. The station also provides a luggage storage service. Travel tickets must be stamped, under penalty of sanction, in the designated yellow ticket machines situated next to the ticket office and along the platforms.

by car www.autostrade.it From Florence Motorway A11 Firenze-Mare, exit at Pisa Nord, take the SS1 Aurelia travelling south to Pisa (approx. 6 km); alternatively Florence-Pisa-Livorno (SGC FI-PI-LI) expressway, exit at Pisa Nord-Est (for the Cisanello hospital centre and the eastern area), Pisa Aeroporto (for the Airport and the San Rossore Park), Pisa Aurelia (for the Leaning Tower and the western area).

From Rome, Bologna Motorway A1 to Florence, then Motorway A11, exit at Pisa Nord, then take the SS1 Aurelia travelling south to Pisa (approx. 6 km). Alternatively, follow the motorway A12-E80 from Rome to Civitavecchia, then the SS1-E80 Aurelia to Rosignano Marittimo, then rejoin the A12-E80 to Pisa (exit at Pisa Centro toll-booth).

From Genoa Exit Pisa Centro, or exit Pisa Nord, then take the SS Aurelia travelling south to Pisa (approx. 6 km).

MOVING AROUND The province of Pisa in the north-west of Tuscany is a rather diverse and varied territory that can in effect be split into two large areas. The first is an essentially flat area that stretches from the sea, inland along the Arno valley, to the border that separates it from the province of Florence; the second is mainly hilly and stretches south along the river Era. The Arno valley and the coastal zone of the province are excellently serviced by the railway network and national road network, and by the Pisan Transport Company (CTT) longdistance service.

Pontedera, San Miniato and the other localities of the Valdarno are easily reached from Pisa by car, taking the Firenze-PisaLivorno (S.G.C. FI-PI-LI), or by train(Pisa-Florence railway line), with frequent connections during the day.

Following the SS 439 southwards, CTT Bus services connect Volterra, the Pisa Hills, the Valdera and the Cecina Valley to Pontedera.

In the heart of the Valgraziosa di Calci is Villa Scorzi, with an Italian garden and a park of around 2 hectares. Around the central structure of the villa, surrounding a small courtyard, are three interior halls: Limonaia, Granaio, and Frantoio.

This 14th century country house of the D’Appiano family was passed to the Cini at the end of the 16th Century, and finally in 1638 to the Scorzi, who built the central core of the villa in 1698.

San Gervasio offers two different solutions to the future couples. The first is the Antico Granaio Reception Hall that can host up to 120 people. The second is for outdoor events, in the gardens of the villa that dominates the village.

The Antico Granaio, or Old Granary, has been restored to its ancient structure, and today is an elegant hall perfect for weddings and other ceremonies that can continue on the Pieve terrace, adjacent to the Granaio and in the pool area below.

The Granaio is also fitted for meetings and conferences.

The ancient village of San Gervasio is immersed in the splendid setting of the Pisan Hills, 25 km from the coast, surrounded by the unspoiled Tuscan countryside.

The business area is formed of around 400 hectares of land, 22 of which are vineyards. The company has been owned by the Tommasini Family since 1960.

By 1566 we already knew about the “Simple farm with an orchard and a vineyard” in the area of Treggiaia. The estate, together with a farm called La Cava, was owned by Iacopo di Ridolfo Riccardi. With the Riccardi Marquises in Florence, the estate underwent a period of great splendor, as it was rich and powerful due to its commercial interests, and reached the maximum of its notoriety under the Medici Principality, much to be considered the lineage with the largest private heritage of Tuscany. The versatility of the spaces and the variety of the landscapes make Villa Riccardi Toscanelli and its park, a location with many uses, capable of hosting events to satisfy the most diverse needs. The architectural changes that would over time make it what it is today began in the middle of the 17th century.

The origins of Badia di Morrona date back to the end of the 11th century. The Abbey was initially assigned to the Benedictine Monks and then, to the Camaldolese monks, that ran it until 1482, when the Bishop of Volterra transformed it into his summer residence. The Curia in Volterra retained ownership of the monastery until 1860 when, the Italian State was founded, and the properties of the Church were requisitioned and the abbey was sold as a farm.

The 16th Century Villa Sonnino is located on a hillside in San Miniato, in the heart of Tuscany, halfway from Pisa to Florence. Borgo Pignano is a private estate of around 350 hectares, located in the heart of the Tuscan countryside between Volterra and San Gimignano, built around a villa that dates to Etruscan times. The main building, an 18th Century villa that has been completely restored, offers suites and rooms, large common areas and a pool with a magnificent view of the countryside, converted from an ancient stone quarry.

Farmhouses, reconverted to apartments and studios, surround the Villa. Borgo Pignano is a beautiful location for parties, weddings and concerts. The estate, with completely preserved woods and gardens, can be privately leased. Since 2001 Borgo Pignano has become a vital and inhabited area.

The small Romanesque church in front of Villa Pignano, dedicated to St. Bartholomew, dates back to the 13th Century.

The facade, adorned by a characteristic three-mullioned window above the entrance, highlights the numerous interventions made in the course of the centuries by using stones from the ancient quarry of the village.

Villa Ricrio is a historic residence, manor house of the farm with the same name, one of the largest in the area with its 650 hectares. It rises on a hill in the municipality of Guardistallo, 10 km from the sea of the Etruscan Coast, a land rich in history with imposing olive groves and vineyards. Its name is synonymous of recreation, leisure, place of carefree fun and this is what it aims to represent. The villa rises with its terrace above the ancient vaulted stables and cellars and next to the old barn. The farm country houses were once the dwellings of the farmers who cultivated the lands of the company.

The property has undergone a long recovery project in the beginning of the nineties starting with the restructuring of the 16 dwellings.

The village today preserves the urban layout of the ancient village with its villa, a pleasant mixture of styles from Medieval times to the 19th century, set in a large garden.

At the corners, still visible, two defence towers with a splendid view of the surroundings. In the garden there is a pool with oval layout, dating back to the 18th century.

The facade in neo-gothic style, two-storey, work of architect Luigi Campani, incorporates an ancient tower at the centre.

description The Historical Dance Group is composed of 15 dancers (or less) in vintage clothing, performing dances and musics of the 14th, 15th and 16th century, adapting the dances to the context of the event. The group may recreate the atmosphere of the splendors of ancient farms or, where required, ask the public to participate. The group includes the musicians (clarions, drums and flutes), the flag weavers and the archers, and cooperate with groups of squires to recreate tournaments and Medieval duels. Performaces can be held everywhere on agreement.

The historical Group of Montopoli and in particular the Historical Dance Group of Montopoli have performed since the 1970s in ancient villages, castles, squares and palaces both in Italy and abroad as well as for the cameras of Italy’s national public broadcasting company RAI and other broadcasters, obtaining successes and numerous awards.
