Tipping The Scales

You would think that because publishing is my business, I would consume as many other magazines as possible. But that is not true. Working on this magazine consumes most of my time.

However, last month I got the chance to select a couple of magazines to subscribe to and I selected four. Now the first issue of Consumer Reports came in and I am yet to read it all, simply because my day is so long. But I also received Bloomberg Businessweek and I have been totally intrigued with this magazine because it deals with a variety of subjects. Not all of them are of any interest

to me but there are a larger number that are and I consume these with vigor. The lead story was whether Bonnie Ross could develop a game cool enough to save Xbox. I could care less. I don’t have time for video games but I am sure a lot of students do.. But one of the stories that did catch my eye (and there were many) was an article by Leonid Bershidsky called HOLD THE TIP. Since I grew up in a neighborhood that had somewhat of a larger Greek population, they were all in the restaurant business- and good ones too.. But apparently the point to this article was that in countries where tips are small, they are richer in culinary delights. I am going to summarize here:

4, Campus aCtivities magazine®, musiC issue 2015

The United States has a government imposed system that bans servers from sharing tips with cooks, dishwashers and other staff that do not interact with the customer. This same system allows restaurants to pay waiters only $2.13 per hour because they are expected to make up the difference in tips the Federal Minimum Wage ($7.25/hr). This means the median hourly pay for American waiters is now $4, not including tips, or less than $700 per month based on a 40hour week. Just so you know the median pay for a cook is $9/hr In other countries like Switzerland and France where tips are smaller or not expected at all, the country is much richer in culinary delights. In fact, Switzerland has the

www.campusactivitiesmagazine.com

most Michelin-starred restaurants per capita, tips were abolish in 1970 and replaced with a 10% to 15 percent service charge. This helped eliminate tax evasion. Such charges are similarly included in the check in France (15% is mandatory), Belgium and Hong Kong. A customer adds more only if the service has been exceptional. French waiters average about $1700 per month. In Belgium and Denmark, rounding off the check is generally enough and in Hong Kong, waiters only accept tips as a remnant of the British Colonial culture. In mainland China and in Japan, tipping is seen largely as humiliating. In countries where tips aren’t a part of the business model, line cooks normally make considerably more than waiters. That accounts for the greater number of top-class restaurants.

Tipping is very American in nature. It goes with a competitive, achievement oriented culture writes Bershidsky. But it doesn’t help create GREAT restaurants, where food, service and ambiance combine for a memorable dining experience. This story in Bloomberg came about with the decision of New York restaurant owner, Danny Meyer’s decision to eliminate tipping in his establishments and go against the American Tradition. Of all the Michelin-Starred restaurants, The United States probably has the highest tip expectations. In no other country is a 20% tip normal. That is why European waiters smile so broadly when they see an American tourist walk in- and why American waiters are not so fond of European visitors.

For more information, I suggest you check out Bloomberg Businessweek. or bloomberg.com

This particular story was in the October 26 edition. Another interesting story included in this issue is the dilemma of buying medicines over seas and some of the additions to what are considered the primary ingredients (such as rat poison). In fact some were totally fake and did not in any way compare to the ingredients in the medicines they were suppose to be modeling.

I highly recommend this publication because it is current, timely and deals with subjects that could effect all of us. W.C. Kirby, Jr., Publisher

The Power of Bystander Intervention: You Can Make a Difference!

With the increase of sexual violence awareness and prevention on college campuses you might have heard the term bystander intervention. We can all step in to prevent sexual violence and keep each other safe in other situations. With alcohol consumption you can keep people out of harm’s way. For sexual violence, you can prevent a friend from experiencing the psychological scars that occur from such attacks or you can prevent a friend from having charges pressed against them. So what does bystander intervention look like? First of all, if everyone is wasted at a party, who can look out for one another? As alcohol floods the brain people lose their ability to hone in on social cues and they lose their instincts. It can start with designating people who will pledge to be spotters for the evening. They are not going to drink.

These spotters should step in when people are drinking too much and tell a person that it is time to switch to water, or they should take the keys away from someone so they will not harm themselves or innocent people on the road. They should not leave someone alone who is drunk. If a person is really disruptive or getting violent they should ask someone to escort them out of there and get them to safe place.

What is the connection of alcohol to sexual violence? In 80 to 90 percent of the cases one or both of the people are under the influence.

There are certain things to look for at a party that indicates something is headed in the wrong direction. First of all, the number one weapon of a sexual offender is alcohol. If you see someone who is feeding another person drinks to get them plastered, step in.

How many times have you have been at a party and you see someone who is wasted and another person is checking them out, almost preying on them? Eventually that person leads the wasted individual out of the room. Now what are most of the people thinking? They’re getting lucky! We need to look at this differently; that person’s so wasted, they can’t give consent! You want to break this up; it takes a little finesse.

Gather a few people together and advise them of the situation. Then divide and conquer. A couple people are going to go over to the potential perpetrator well before the victim is led out. They should strike up a casual conversation for the sake of distracting him. Meanwhile the rest of the group will go over to the potential victim and take her to a safe place.

Read your friends’ body language. You might see someone who is cornered by another individual. You can tell by the look on their face that they are not comfortable or happy to be there. Go over to them and use that little white lie, “You know what? I have been meaning to tell you

6, Campus aCtivities magazine®, musiC issue 2015

something, all day but I keep forgetting.” Grab them by the hand and rescue them.

If you see a friend leading a drunken person out of the room, go to them and tell them that it is not cool. Let them know that they are setting themselves up for accusations of an incapacitated sexual assault. They might thank you later! Peer mediation and intervention is powerful and effective. It has been noted that students respond better to their peers than they do to adults. There are certain character traits that could send up a red flag that a person might be a potential sexual offender. You want to call them out on their behavior! Here is a list of some of those traits: They treat people like sexual objects, “Hey baby, looking good today!” They brag about how many people they’ve had sex with. They purposefully feed someone drinks. They invade someone’s personal body space, immediately touching them. They accuse a person of being uptight or prudish. They look distracted and don’t pay attention to the person they’re talking to. Look for upperclassmen who are trying to get the freshmen girls to a party. They’re often set up to have sex.

If you observe any of these behaviors talk to that person and express your concerns for them. Tell them that you don’t want them to get into a life-altering situation. Tell them that it’s not right; we need to have the integrity to do the right thing and not harm others. Go to parties together, stay together, and leave together. Keep an eye out for one another and keep each other safe. You have created a family on your campus; you owe this to your friends! Questions on college life? Email me at elaine@elainepasqua.com

last week for three hours and it felt like I was missing a limb. I was in the psychotic state psychiatrists have labeled “Nomophobia” as in: no mobile phone phobia. True affliction. True story.) Drop me into a deep dark forest and I fear nutritional sustenance would be a colossal challenge, since all my hunting and gathering skills have been limited to food I have found on menus in restaurants, or in bags, boxes, and cans on the shelves of grocery stores. The exception might be fruit, as I usually keep my favorites, bananas and kiwi, in stock. However in all the time I have spent in a forest I can never recall seeing one banana tree (and I’m not even sure kiwis grow on trees). I have seen pecan trees, but that would make for a very limited diet.

I Will Survive Or Maybe Not

“No phone, no lights, no motor car, not a single luxury, like Robinson Crusoe, it's primitive as can be.” The Ballad of Gilligan’s Isle

A news story caught my attention stating that scientists believe modern man is physically inferior to prehistoric man. At first I thought how could this be? Prehistoric man did not have gyms with treadmills and hot yoga classes, or even a Shake Weight back in the cave. How could he possibly be physically superior without access to Slim Fast, Clif Bars, or gluten-free products?

This gave me pause to wonder just how I would hold up if all my modern conveniences were removed, and I was forced to become a freerange human released into the wild. This would be a formidable fate for me, since my idea of camping is a Holiday Inn. (I misplaced my phone 8 Campus aCtivities magazine®,

I’m sure there are abundant edible plants in every forest that I could survive on, but damn if I know which ones. I’m also sure there are poisonous plants in every forest, so the thought of playing “lets eat this and see if it kills me” is paramount to playing Russian Roulette with dinner. I suspect that prehistoric man assigned this task to the members of the tribe that were the bravest...or the dumbest. I know so little about plants that even if I managed to find a meal I would not know what kind of leaves to use in place of toilet tissue afterward, and there are some places on my body I do not want exposed to poison ivy.

So with my limited knowledge of botany I would be forced to rely on being a carnivore. I gave up red meat many years ago, and my present diet is limited to chicken, turkey, and fish. Once again, in all the time I have spent in a forest I can never recall seeing a wild chicken once, so that would not be an option. Although I have never

musiC issue 2015

seen one in person, I do know that wild turkey exist, because I have seen pictures of them on labels at the liquor store, but I am totally clueless how I would catch one. That leaves fish, and to be honest if I had to eat nothing but fish and pecans I would surly die...of boredom. Obviously I would have to add red meat back to my diet, and under those circumstances, would do so without hesitation. In fact, when faced with death by starvation I think I could consider cannibalism. Dinner, party of one, your table is ready.

Even if I did manage to find food, I would still have the challenge of finding shelter. I would take a clue from prehistoric man and try to find a cave to call home, however I fear any place worth living would already be inhabited by something with claws, teeth, fangs, or stingers, and I have already experienced more than my share of bad roommates in college. After giving it some thought, I have concluded that if you drop me into a forest it would not be long before I was buzzard bait. I do not believe I could survive. In fact, I do not believe my dog could survive. We have both been domesticated.

I must reluctantly admit that the scientists are probably correct. Modern man is inferior to prehistoric man. But take heart, for it is far better to be inferior...than prehistoric.

TOM DELUCA::Tom was the very first act to be

featured on the cover of this new magazine that everyone was talking about. In 1991, he was probably the hottest act to take the stage and schools clamored for a chance to have him at their school . WHY? Because Tom presented hypnotism like no one else in the business. It’s a hilarious wild ride for the audience and a relaxing and often comforting yet mysterious adventure for those being hypnotized. Tom is a true professional and he manages the crowd and the volunteers on stage in a calm and soothing voice. Back then, Judy Brown of LA Weekly said, “I hate hypnotists, but even I can’t dislike Tom DeLuca with his Teddy Bear look, soft ‘trust-me’ voice and his demystifying of hypnotism. A sort of Penn & Teller of hypnotism, Deluca may well be the first truly hip hypnotist.”

BERTICE BERRY: She was black, bold and

over 21 and the hottest act to hit the campus market in years. She was a pd.D graduate in Sociology and a university professor. She is one heck of a performer. When she performs there is no pretense and no faking it. At that time she usually did a lecture in the afternoon and a comedy show at night and both were always well attended and even the lecture was humorous and interactive. Her lecture blended many serious incidents that happened to her personally but she turned each of these around with a humorous touch to bring home her message. One thing you can always count on with Bertice is interaction. Not only is it part of her show but it’s part of her life. Both the lecture and the comedy shows are hilarious and it helps teach students to laugh at themselves.

THE SPENCERS: In 1993, Kevin and Cindy Sp-

ncer won THREE of our magazine’s top awards. They won BEST Special Event, BEST Touring Show and BEST Novelty/Variety Show. Kevin started out as one of those everyday magicians but a couple of unforseen circumstances just made everything fall into place. Those circumstances made Kevin and Cindy a REAL team and resulted in one of the most sought-after, high tech illusion shows to ever hit the campus market. It wasn’t just luck because Kevin and Cindy are one of the hardest working teams to ever hit the stage. Their show is the result of practice and perfection. It is one in which every detail has been taken care of. To say that it is spectacular is an understatement. But it didn’t happen with a little magic dust, the Spencers have earned the reputation of one of the most highly regarded acts.

JAY MOHR: With a rapier wit and rapid fire de-

livery that belie his boyish good looks, Jay has emerged as one of today’s hottest comedic talents. A popular fixture in the 90’s on the campus circuit, he starred in the ABC sitcom, “Camp Wilder”, coproduced “Last Comic Standing” along with executive producer and agent, Barry Katz and of course was the less than honest agent in the movie Jerry McGuire. As Dorfman, the Wilder’s next door neighbor, Mohr brought his perfect timing to the character he describes as “slovenly, but sincere.” As a guest on almost all late night shows, Mohr comes off genuine and seriously funny. Campuses loved him because he was always up for a basketball game with the students and would come in early just to hang out.

LOU DIAMOND PHILLIPS: Campus Activi-

ties Magazine® was thrilled to be a part of a mission for Phillips. He began speaking engagements that contained not only information about his life in film but his fight to bring awareness to the Native American culture and the struggle these people experience. Even at the time this story and feature were done, Lou was an award-winning star of such films as La Bamba, Young Guns, Stand and Deliver, Disorganized Crime, Shadow of the Wolf and more that would follow. Part Cherokee himself, his presentation involved the Native American’s plight from personal experience, throughout his life to his work with the Native American Awareness organization, Winds of Life, which he was instrumental in helping found. A native of Arlington, Texas, Lou has been acting since he was in the sixth grade.

The interview for this cover feature came as Traci was preparing for a film role that would make her a legitimate actress after three years as an adult film star. During her formative years, Traci was emotionally abused by her father. Made uncomfortable by her early physical development, he convinced her that she was “that kind of girl”. She studied at the Strassburg Institute and was cast in Roger Corman’s Not Of This Earth followed by John Waters’ Cry Baby.

BILL HICKS: Surprisingly on October 1, 1993, Bill

Hicks, after his12th appearance on the David Letterman Show became the first comedy act to be censored at the CBS Ed Sullivan Theatre (Where Elvis was censored in 1956- only being allowed to be seen from the waist up). Hicks was not allowed to be shown at all!

Bill Hicks was a thinker- a bit of a philosopher- and maybe a rebel of sorts. He believed that comedy should carry a message and it should be a learning experience. The San Francisco Chronicle at the time stated: “Love him or leave him, but listen to him.” The Los Angeles Times said “Truly funny original comedians are hard to find: funny comics with ideas should be put on the endangered species list. Bill Hicks is one such comic.” It was unknown if Bill knew his fate at the time of our interview but he gave us tons of thought-provoking material.

With her mix of boldness, honesty and vulnerability, this innovative and visionary artist has undermined the mainstream and freed us from the conventional. She continues to evolve as an anti-icon for who free expression- artistically, spiritually- is everything.”When you’re 18, I don’t know if you really how to act, but I was never going to sit around and wait for someone to take care of me.” She began working during the day as a manicurist in LA. “ I think it is important that I took care of myself. I am very independent.” She never went to college at all but started performing in clubs. “ I met a lot of nice people along the way.” Her big break came in 1981 when she was cast with Robert DeNiro and Jerry Lewis in Kings of Comedy.

RENE HICKS: René always has had the reputation of

being hilariously funny and incredibly sincere. Her biography describes her perfectly: “limitless energy and an animated presence. But we thought it went much further than that. While she certainly can liven up any situation, there is always an intense feeling of humanity- a halo or glow of simply enjoying life and the desire to share it with others. She seems to connect with you in a way that you both understand. That is what makes her different. “When I graduated and became an accountant, I really didn’t like my job. During that time San Francisco was pretty much known as a comedy haven...Robin Williams and a lot of others got their start there. Back then they had open mic nights and my friends put up the money for me to go up on stage. I was actually funny doing stuff that just came to mind. After that there was no stopping me.”

RODNEY CARRINGTON: A knock-out success at

the Montreal Comedy Festival, Americans were soon learning what campus buyers knew all along...this Texan’s home-spun, rowdy comedy was kicking butt everywhere. “My wife is an Oklahoma native and I’m as East Texas native. I didn’t care much for school. No, I simply hated school. When I finished high school, I only went to college because my girlfriend was there. I think school made me physically sick. I got in my head I wanted to be an actor and one day I marched into the theatrical department and said ‘I want to be an actor!’ The guy that smiled at me, Mr. Caldwell, turned out to be one of my best friends in life.

At first I was stage shy. I was working out and had all that testosterone going on and had that ‘nobody can hurt me’ attitude. But a year later I had settled down and was in my first play, Noises Off. I got real great reviews.”

It was on the night of December 3, 1997 that the Bacon Brothers performed on the “Tonight Show” and left millions of unsuspecting viewers in awe. On occasion celebrities may attempt to make the crossover to other areas but usually find making that transition is like trying to play in the NBA. Well Johnny Depp pulled it off and so did Elvis. In fact Kevin even shares some of Elvis’ strikingly familiar characteristics like a deep husky voice and dashing dance moves. Our staff writer, Jennifer Lester, spoke with Kevin just after the taping of the ”Tonight Show” and she said you could hear the twinkling of their eyes in his voice as he and Michael spoke about a “dream come true.”

The Kinsey Sicks: America's Hilarious “Dragapella” Campus Sweethearts

The Kinsey Sicks is one of a kind; this is not your typical barbershop quartet. This dynamic and hilariously talented foursome is the world's only drag queen a cappella group. Referred to as a Dragapella Beautyshop Quartet, they have written and starred in Vegas and Off Broadway hit shows, toured internationally, recorded 8 CD's and starred in 2 feature films. Over the years the Kinseys have performed at almost 140 campuses in forty states.

The first time I saw The Kinsey Sicks was in 2002 when they showcased at NACA Mid Atlantic. Immediately I was impressed by their exquisite dresses, whimsical wigs, and makeup that any girl would die for. Once they opened their mouths I was sold! Their original songs and parodies pushed the envelope to make us think and laugh, and their harmonies were the finest that I've heard. From that moment I became a die-hard fan and I see them whenever I can.

www.campusactivitiesmagazine.com

The group started in San Francisco in 1993. Ben Schatz and four of his friends went to see Bette Midler in concert dressed up as the Andrews Sisters. During intermission someone asked them if they would sing at a future event. They sang the whole way home and continued until three in the morning. As Ben said, "We all had respectable jobs." That night changed their lives and The Kinsey Sicks was born with five members.

There are now four members in the group. Each gal has her own distinct personality. Ben plays Rachel who I would liken to a Jersey girl. (I can say that because I grew up in Jersey) She is rough around the edges, has a mouth that would make a sailor blush, and she is definitely raunchy. Trixie, who is played by Jeff Manabat is stunningly beautiful. Men have actually remarked about her beauty to me. Trixie is elegant and is definitely a diva. Jeff is the third Trixie since the inception of the Kinsey Sicks. Trampolina is played by Spencer Brown. She is somewhat dim-witted, simple, and very silly. Spencer is the second Trampolina. Nathan Marten just replaced the original Winnie a year ago and is quite accomplished in filling her more prudish, obsessive, compulsive, and nitpicky shoes. Collectively they have years of musical and theater experience. Ben took theater classes from nursery school on. He received a law degree from Harvard and was working as an attorney on AIDS discrimination cases in San Francisco when the group formed. Jeff was the musical director of a national award-winning collegiate a cappella group from the University of California at Berkeley. Ben writes all of the lyrics for the original songs and parodies. He comes up with the tunes and sends them to Jeff who fine tunes them and composes the arrangements.

Spencer studied Musical Theater at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City. He also works on some of the arrangements. Nathan who sings bass received his Masters in Voice from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. While they are musically talented, each one processes fine acting skills and they consistently remain in character. Remarkably, they live in distant cities from one other yet they are tight. They rehearse when they are on the road.

I recently spoke with Ben. The success and longevity of The Kinsey Sicks stems from their material, which is original, fun, and brings them pleasure. They are not packaging themselves to please others and that makes them more authentic. "We never said what should we do to be more successful. This group grew out of a friendship circle. We are not prepackaged or market driven. We want to be www.campusactivitiesmagazine.com

meaningful. We are a non-conventional voice and are unafraid and unapologetic about it." There's much pressure for people on campuses to take a safe route, which they don't. They encourage students to unapologetically take their own path and they spend a lot of time talking to students after the program. The Kinseys like to hear students' stories and encourage them, which is quite meaningful. Ben writes sexually explicit songs which college students love. "We are sexually unashamed in our lyrics," he stated. No topic is safe...corporate greed, cultural issues, feminism, diversity, political, silly, or "anything that pisses me off!" Their mission is to make people laugh, feel, think, and question. It's the perfect combination for the college experience. "Our goal is to sound as good as any a cappella group and to be as funny as any comedy troupe."

Laugh you will! I recently saw their new show Chicks with Shticks. The muscles on the back of my head and on my face were killing me from laughing so hard! Any friend whom I’ve taken to their show becomes a die-hard fan and they can't wait to see them again. Not only will you laugh at their shows, but their promotional material is equally as clever. Their website is a blast and Ben's unsubscribes at the bottom of their emails are the best I've encountered. They are witty, intelligent, and quite entertaining. I look forward to reading them with each new email.

The Kinseys' shows constantly change so their material remains fresh. They perform in my home area once a year. I have not seen the same show twice. They just don't sing. Each show has a story line where each gal's true personality comes through. Their hilarious holiday show is titled "Oy Vey in a Manger." In the coming presidential election year, the gals will be coming running as a Republican presidential candidate in "Electile Dysfunction."

Some might think that they are too controversial but the Kinseys encourage people from all walks of life to take a risk. They have performed in many rural, conservative areas where the audiences love them and want them back. Recently they performed in a small town in Kansas. They had no idea how well received they would be. People went crazy for them.

Numerous campuses have invited them back as many as five times. Ben refers to them as "repeat offendees". They appeal to the college market because there is no act out there like them. Ben said that they attract a wide range of students; those from the theater groups, the a cappella groups, LGBT groups, Asian and Jewish, or anyone who wants to be entertained and think. Often students pop their heads in during a show and stay for the rest of the performance. Not only do they entertain but they enrich the conversation on campus. Many who have seen them in college continue to follow them long after graduation.

Recently they performed at Albright College, a small Methodist-affiliated college of 1600 students in Reading, PA. Four hundred students attended. According to Tifffany Clayton, Coordinator of Multi- Cultural affairs, the students were pleasantly surprised and loved The Kinseys! They did not know what to expect from a dragappella group. There was a lot of laughter and Tiffany received great feedback. Ben noted that NACA rarely showcases openly LGBTQ entertainers. The Kinseys is one of the few acts that have been selected. They are unapologetically out. Many don't see the value, but this is an opportunity to provide support for those students who are gay or questioning, where the rates of depression are high. They also allow others to become comfortable with their own sexuality.

You can check out their hilarious parodies by viewing their videos at www.kinseysicks.com. Some of my favorites are, Putin In the Ritz, Crappy, Tranny Boy, I Will Swallow Him, We Arm the World, and I'm Dreaming of a Betty White Christmas. Then there are my favorite original songs, Get a Gun, Jerry's Song, and Things You Shouldn't Say. It's often said that laughter is the best medicine. If you want to provide relief from the day to day grind of studying with deep hearty laughter, open your students to a new perspective, and entertain them, look no further than The Kinsey Sicks!
