Legendary Beatles Manager Dies At 90 : “God Bless George”

“George Martin, the legendary music producer who has been called the “fifth Beatle” because of his influential work with the band he signed in 1962, died at home on Tuesday, March 8. He was 90. Mr. Martin produced the majority of the Beatles’ recordings and is credited with helping guide their evolution from a basic rock group into a creative, experimental force that redefined popular music and culture. In the process, the English record producer, arranger and composer—who created his own production company in

1965—helped change and expand the role of producers within the music industry.

Former Beatles drummer Ringo Starr reported Mr. Martin’s death early Wednesday morning, writing on Twitter, “God bless George Martin peace and love to Judy and his family…George will be missed.” His message was retweeted thousands of times within a few hours.

nal. “Put simply, my job was to make sure recordings were artistically exceptional and commercially appealing, maximizing the qualities of artists and songs.”

His influence can be heard in many of the Fab Four’s songs, from the frolicking early drumroll in “She Loves You” and the initial guitar on “A Hard Day’s Night” to the first plaintive cry on “Help.” For Mr. Martin, first impressions were important. “If you could grab teens’ imaginations right away over the radio, you’d have them,” he said in 2012.

“A producer’s role is still a mystery to most music-listeners, isn’t it?” Mr. Martin said in a 2012 interview with The Wall Street Jour-

Paul McCartney recalled one such time. “I brought the song ‘Yesterday’ to a recording session and the guys in the band suggested that I sang it solo and accompany myself on guitar,” he wrote in a statement on his website. “After I had done this George Martin said to me, ‘Paul I have an idea of putting a string quartet on the record.' I said, ‘Oh no George, we are a rock and roll band and I don’t think it’s a good idea’. With the gentle bedside manner of a great producer he said to me, ‘Let us try it and if it doesn’t work we won’t use it and we’ll go with your solo version’.” The song, with Mr. Martin’s guidance, went on to become “one of the most recorded songs ever with versions by Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye and thousands more,” the musician added. We are a mid-sized campus in the mid-west.We have an active programming board and we generally book some 30 shows each semester (fall and spring). While some of these shows are low budget (under $1200) we always like to have a bigger show where we can sell tickets to the community and sometimes we can draw from 300 miles away. I can’t help but see all the great acts that you have featured in your magazine and drool over the possibility of having something like that on our school. We sent buyers to APCA once and were totally disappointed. The NACA conference out here used to be pretty good but even that is a little lackluster over the last year or so.

The problem that I have is that the showcasing acts that appear on those showcase stages, none of our student have ever heard of, so it is very difficult to draw a crowd. When we don’t, then the board looks bad for making that kind of buying decision and we are held accountable for poor attendance.

Because these conferences are held so far in advance, by the time we decide on an act or even able to participate in a block, sometimes the school will plan a major event right on top of us. One year it was a major wrestling tournament followed by a post conference football game. It devastated our shows.

It is hard to get students to see an act we spend $2500 or more on and when we plan for a 2800 seat venue and only have 35 students show up, the act is frustrated because they are playing to dead air, the board is demoralized because we failed to draw students and staff to the event and the administration looks at us as if we are throwing money away. And we are!

www.campusactivitiesmagazine.com

I have seen nothing in any of these conference educational sessions that would help us find an answer to this problem. Quite honestly both the students here on campus and the activities board would rather spend the ENTIRE budget on two major shows each semester and look good rather than do 30 events and have a poor turnout for most of them.

I have seen the information in your magazine about AEP plus the other great shows as part of your history and think that would be a great solution to route an act from a nearby performing arts theater, festival or some other function and would love to find out more. I already checked out the membership for us and it is pocket change compared to all these other organizations and conferences. Quite honestly, I think our students could learn more from professional buyers and maybe we can build a stronger program that students would support. We already spend tons of money on promotion now, including the student newspaper, college radio station, printed goods, video etc. with very poor results. I really don’t think that if we paid some students to actually come, they would show up. YouTube and Vimeo have spoiled them and they would rather have greatness or at least someone they are familiar with. Pamela Wilson, Dallas TX

AEP Might be an affordable solution for you, but let’s look at your situation in several ways:

Not all corporate buyers are looking for the Bruce Springsteen’s, Adele or Zac Brown Band. We do have a lot of buyers that do regularly book big name acts. But here is the kicker. Sometimes the backline and contract riders will be so intricate that that cost may be substantial, so you have other costs than simply the talent. Most really good talent will usually

take campus dates if the community is part of the audience. They love playing for their adoring fans. BUT sometimes the agents and managers can be a hold out. Campus dates are generally less expensive than tour dates and these guys get paid on commission and they are greedy and want every dollar they can get.

It seems to me that your best bet is to try to get some artists with good name recognition that are still very desireable to college students. Some of the best arists are country artists that are scraping their way to the top. Sometimes you can also get more contemporary artists or even solo acts who travel with guitars. One of the best shows I have ever seen is Travis Tritt and he appeared solo with just a stool and his guitar. Her was absolutely awesome and the crowd gave him numerous standing ovations. Sometimes that will work with pop and rap artists too, but you have to be very careful that you know who your audience is because you don’t want to segment them.

AEP might be an eye-opening experience for you but there are a couple of things to consider. First, It is in Las Vegas. While students would have access to all AEP functions, they must be 21 to drink alcohol. The hotel is very lovely and self contained. There is no reason for them to leave the property during the entire conference. The room rates are only $60/ night and they are extremely nice. There are some meals included in the conference registration and there are plenty of very reasonable food options there but it is a busy place. The 2 1/2 days are great experience but they are pretty intense. The benefit is that you will get to socialize with big name buyers. There are only 4 showcases but you get to meet the artists and their agents following each one and discuss any possibilities.

U R 2 Smart 2 TXT While Driving

Over the years I have become friends with many students who have reached out to me after I presented at their campus. Recently, one of these students was in a car accident. A guy was traveling 70 miles per hour and hit her. He was texting. Her car was totaled and she sprained her neck and spinal column. For weeks after the accident she was in severe pain.

Several years ago, a 21 year old woman who lived in my area, crossed over the middle line while driving down the road and was killed in a head on collision. The accident occurred on a bright, sunny day around 1:00 in the afternoon. When the police investigated the cause of the accident they found her cell phone on the floor of the car. She was in the middle of sending a text when the accident occurred. Texting and driving is now considered to be more dangerous than drinking and driving. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, deaths from texting and driving are increasing while deaths from drinking and driving are declining. People drive with their cell phones more frequently than they drive while intoxicated from alcohol. The NHTSA reported that texting while driving is responsible for approximately 1.6 million accidents every year. That accounts for 25% of all driving accidents.

The statistics speak for themselves: The probability that an accident involved a cell phone is one in four 341,000 crashes in 2013 involved texting 40% of teens have been a passenger in a car whose driver used a cell phone in a way that put them at risk. People in the 21 to 24 year old age group are more likely to send a text while driving.

A driver can safely take his or her eyes away from the road for two seconds. On average our eyes are taken off of the road for five seconds while texting. At 55 MPH that vehicle will travel the length of a football field. A lot can happen in one hundred yards! Tenths of a second can make a difference in our reaction time - the difference between avoiding an accident or getting into one.

A study was conducted in 2010 by Car and Driver editor Eddie Alterman at a deserted airstrip. It showed that texting and driving had a greater impact on safety than drinking and driving. When legally drunk, his stopping distance at 70 MPH increased by four feet. When he read an email it increased by 36 feet. While texting, it added 70 feet!

Texting or reading a message takes the driver’s attention away from driving more frequently and for longer periods of time than other distractions. The driver then follows too closely, is not able to brake in ample time, or crosses into oncoming traffic. Drivers who are texting while driving have a 23% higher chance of causing a crash. That is equivalent to drinking four beers and then getting behind the wheel. The device hijacks the brain and attention, taking 15 seconds to fully readjust and focus again.

6, Campus aCtivities magazine®, maRCH 2016

We need to take a break from our devices while driving. Unfortunately texting and notifications have programmed us to respond immediately to incoming messages. Before smart phones, things could wait; we were more patient. Retrain yourself to put your safety and the safety of those around you first. The person on the other end can and should wait. Remember, your car can hurt or kill others. Take the privilege of driving more seriously and be responsible by keeping your attention on the road at all times.

Adopting simple habits will reduce the temptation to send or read a text while driving. When you are in the car put your cellphone in a place where you can’t reach it. Set the phone on silent and turn off all notifications so you will not be tempted to pick it up when a text comes in. If you have a passenger in the car and you are expecting a message, you can leave the phone on and borrow their thumbs. Let them read the text to you and dictate your response back to them. If you are expecting a message and you are driving alone, let that person know that you will be driving for a while. Set the auto respond message to, “Driving now, get right back to you.” Ask them to delay sending the message. If you know that a friend is driving, wait and send a message later. If you are in a car with someone who is texting and driving, don’t be afraid to ask them to put the phone down. Several years ago we were being driven in rush hour traffic by a young relative in Boston. He was traveling at 50 MPH and texting about the Red Sox game that we just saw. We begged him to put the phone down! Tell your friend that you are concerned for the safety of everyone in your car as well as the innocent people who are on the road around you. Have the courage to advocate for your safety and for the safety of others.

Hey, Hey, LBJ!

Over the last fifteen years of writing this column I have, for the most part, tried to keep my political opinions to myself and maintain a perspective of journalistic objectivity, and I will continue that practice today. However, I have never hidden my pride of my Texas roots, a state pride that all Texans feel compelled to express, even at the risk of ridicule from the citizens of the other forty-nine. I mention Texas because this is an election year and for some time now it seems in almost every Presidential election there is a politician associated with Texas in the discussion. From this years crop of Ted Cruz, Rick Perry, Jeb Bush, and Rand Paul, to previous elections featuring George W. Bush, George H. W. Bush, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and the many others all the way back to Sam Houston’s presidential bid in 1860. But it may surprise you to learn there has only been one President that was born and raised in Texas (both Presidents Bush were born in New England; Dwight D. Eisenhower was born in Texas, but raised in Kansas). I am speaking of Lyndon Baines Johnson, better know as LBJ. (He was not the only LBJ in his family, in fact they all had the same initials - LBJ: Lady Bird Johnson, Lynda Bird Johnson, and Luci Baines Johnson. Lady Bird got here nickname as a baby when her nurse proclaimed “She’s as pretty as a lady bird,” which is a lady bug.)

I recently paid a visit to the LBJ Library and was surprised at how much I did not know about the man. He was born on August 27, 1908 and died on January 22, 1973, at only 64 years old, but left a lasting legacy that many, including myself, had forgotten or was unaware of.

He was a man of many “firsts.” He was the first President sworn into office by a woman. And the first to be sworn in on an airplane, Air Force One, as it was parked at Love Field. He was the first person under the age of 45 to become Minority Leader in Senate history, and the following year, when the Democrats won control, Majority Leader. He was also the first member of Congress to enlist in the armed forces in World War II; served briefly in the Navy as a lieutenant commander, winning The Silver Star, awarded for his "gallantry in action" in the South Pacific. He was the first President to install telephones www.campusactivitiesmagazine.com

The above acts were all part of LBJ’s "Great Society," a program he created to fight poverty, end racial injustice and cause social reform. Historians agree that with the exception of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s “New Deal,” it was the most impactful program our country has known. And because of it, by the time Johnson left office the country was in better shape on many levels.

throughout the White House and the first to record his conversations (a practice his replacement, Richard Nixon, came to regret.)

Johnson was know as a human dynamo, tirelessly working 18-20 hours a day, earning the reputation of being a “tornado in pants.” His powers of persuasion was unsurpassed. At 6` 3", he was the second tallest President, after Abraham Lincoln, and often intimidated his opponents with his physical presence, as well as his down-home charm. As a result Congress passed almost 96 percent of his administration's programs, including such major legislation as: The Clean Air Act of 1963 The Higher Education Facilities Act of 1963 The Vocational Education Act of 1963 The Civil Rights Act of 1964 The Urban Mass Transportation Act of 1964 The Wilderness Act The Food Stamp Act of 1964 The Economic Opportunity Act The Housing Act of 1964 The Higher Education Act of 1965 The Older Americans Act The Social Security Act of 1965 The Voting Rights Act The Immigration and Nationality Services Act of 1965 The Animal Welfare Act of 1966 The Freedom of Information Act The Age Discrimination in Employment Act The Public Broadcasting Act of 1967 The Architectural Barriers Act of 1968 The Bilingual Education Act The Civil Rights Act of 1968 The Gun Control Act of 1968

LBJ came from humble beginnings, growing up in poverty. His childhood home didn't have electricity or indoor plumbing. So it was natural for him to wage a “War on Poverty.” By the time LBJ left office the percentage of Americans living in poverty was almost cut in half, down from 20% to 12%

One of his first jobs was as an elementary school teacher for extremely poor Mexican-American students, and the hardships they faced with prejudice and unequal opportunity touched his heart. So he championed the “Civil Rights Movement.” Lincoln freed African-Americans; LBJ gave them the power to vote. By the time LBJ left office the number of black elected officials was up almost 5 times, from 300 to 1,470. He appointed the first African-American to the Supreme Court, the Presidential Cabinet, and the Federal Reserve. Being a former teacher he pushed for reforms in education. By the time LBJ left office the number of Americans with 4 years of college went up 39%

LBJ believed the continuing quest for exploration was an American quality to save and he became the architect for the U.S. Space Program. NASA, renamed their headquarters The Johnson Space Center, because thanks to his efforts 6 months after he left office we had a man on the moon. LBJ strove to increase the American quality of life, both with environmental protections and in arts and recreation. By the time LBJ left office he had created the National Endowment of the Arts, The Kennedy Center, The American Ballet, and 36 new National Parks. His legacy is felt throughout the nation on all of us today, if you wear seat belts, if you have ever

CHRIS CARTER Christopher Carter has been rewarded for his contributions to the camus market and is one of the market’s most enduring artists.

Not only has he been voted Campus Entertainer of the Year, but his popularity has made him the subject of many articles in Campus Activities Magazine. In 2005, he scored the ultimate “Grand Slam” winning not only Entertainer of the Year and Best Male Performer, but also Best Live Novelty Act. Colleges rave about how genuinely nice he is and easy to work with. His ARCs have been very supportive of the general feel and perception that buyers have of both him personally and his show. He was also tapped to perform along with Mission Improvable in Campus Activities Magazine’s Annual “Rock ‘n Road Show.”

From Springfield, IL, his mother was a psychologist, and he learned the knack of “body Language” at an early age. In college, he had a double major: theatre and business. But even then, he knew he wanted to be a performer. He went to graduate school working on a doctorate. “ I received my candidacy, but never did my dissertation. That is when I really dug in and began performing.

Even today, Chris is at the top of Campus Activities Magazine’s Artist Report Card rankings. He has also been featured in our sister publication, American Entertainment Magazine.

JASON LeVASSEUR Jason LeVasseur, along with buddy Jerry Chapman, started out in the campus market as a duo known as “Life In General.” They were the “Kings of Pop” back in the mid to late 90’s. They were highly regarded as they dazzled college students all over the nation and gathered an enthusiastic fan base becoming the very best duo in the marketplace at that time.

When the duo split up, Jason continued in the college market as a solo music act. He landed several covers with Campus Activities Magazine over the last 25 years and has been a staple in the college market.

He will often be found as a CAM Reader’s Choice Awards Nominee and has had much success winning his categories.

Jason is a seasoned performer and is very enthusiastic and nurturing with students who attend his show. Simply due to its interactive nature and his ability to engage the audience, he has found a successful home with campus buyers.

Recently Jason found a new niche in the campus market and that is speaking to students. As a speaker, he is able to relate to students because during his tenure with colleges, he has become friends with students and staff and learned how to mediate and balance situations where other speakers would not have the experience. www.campusactivitiesmagazine.com

Craig Karges' special brand of mentalism and magic has captivated college audiences for more than three decades and he's still going strong with appearances not only on college campuses but for corporate events and in theaters and performing arts centers around the world. 2015 included two international tours covering over 40,000 miles along with special appearances on the Mississippi Queen steamboat cruising the Mississippi River and opening for Maroon 5 during a billionaire's birthday party! Craig kept a full schedule of corporate work with shows from Miami, Florida to Spokane, Washington and from La Jolla, California to the Turning Stone Casino in upstate New York. His Back to School Tour of colleges and universities saw him visiting 13 campuses and performing for over 11,000 students. Many of these dates were return appearances like his 21st consecutive year at the University of Akron and his 22nd consecutive year at Xavier University. Most of his regular stops on this annual tour were rebooked for 2016 before the first of the year. The tour included some first-time campuses as well like Davenport University in Michigan -- also already rebooked for 2016. Craig continued performing on college campuses throughout the year as the featured entertainment for Family Weekends, Homecomings and special events like Utah State University's "The

www.campusactivitiesmagazine.com

Howl" which sold out two days in advance and saw 6000 people from as far away as Colorado and Nevada descend on the campus for a fun-filled evening.

Craig is arguably the most honored entertainer in campus entertainment history. That's a big claim but consider this -- he was named Campus Entertainer of the Year a record breaking six times by the National Association for Campus Activities. He also won NACA's Variety Entertainer of the Year Award for a record breaking 12 consecutive years! When we launched our Readers Choice Awards, Craig quickly became a winner with four Entertainer of the Year Awards (a record, tied only by Justin "Kredible" Willman), along with 11 other wins in categories including Best Novelty/Variety Act, Best Performing Arts Attraction, Best Solo Act and Best Male Performer. Fifteen Campus Activities Magazine awards in total AND he was the fifth inductee into the National Campus Entertainment Hall of Fame. One year Craig was named both Campus Entertainer of the Year by NACA and also Entertainer of the Year by Campus Activities Magazine. This double whammy resulted in national media attention including a feature story for CNN's pop culture news brief. Craig was dubbed the "King of college campus entertainment" by the cable news channel. Craig has not only received accolades from the campus market. His peers also recognize his work. He CAMPUS ACTIVITIES MAGAZINE速, MARCH 2016, 17

earned the Certified Speaking Professional (CSP) designation from the National Speakers Association (NSA) and he is a member of NSA's CPAE Speaker Hall of Fame. The International Psychic Entertainers Association named him Mentalist of the Year. Last summer at the Society of American Magician's annual convention in Philadelphia, Craig was presented with the Mentalist Award from the New York City based Christopher Foundation for notable contributions to the art of magic. Craig Karges' resume includes over 5000 performances in 23 countries on four continents as well as in all 50 states. He has made over 40 national television appearances from The Tonight Show to appearances on CNN, Fox News and E! He co-produced and starred in two syndicated television specials for Cox Broadcasting. He is also the author of three books including the best-selling Ignite Your Intuition.

"I joined NACA in 1979 when I was still a student at Marshall University. I was doing shows on campus and the Director of Student Activities, Don Robertson, introduced me to the world of campus programming. I attended my first regional conference that Fall -- the Great Lakes Regional -- which was held in Pittsburgh, an hour from my home in Wheeling, West Virginia. I

18, Campus aCtivities magazine速, maRCH 2016

took a couple days off from my classes at Marshall, drove four hours home to stay with my parents and then commuted an hour each way to downtown Pittsburgh to man my booth at the conference. I was very naive and didn't know what I was doing from a business standpoint! I did book three dates at that conference. I also met Pat Padla and Barry Drake who, much later, became good friends. They told me they thought back then that I would never make it!"

No story on Craig would be complete without mentioning his wife, Charlotte. "Charlotte and I met in college and have been married since 1980. She still handles all the college bookings, attends booking conferences and oversees the master calendar. She's really been with me from the start when we used to tour 55,000 miles a year in a van! Officially, she is the 'VP of Stuff' at Karges Productions. She is the best person I know and I could not have done this without her love and support."

"No matter what a given year brings -- international touring, opening for Maroon 5, working high end corporate dates at fabulous hotels or playing historic theaters and state-of-the-art performing arts centers -- I still love playing campus dates. Many people ask me why I continue to work the market as everything else

www.campusactivitiesmagazine.com

I do pays two to three times as much as my college dates and I won't cancel a college show for a better offer or TV appearance. I have a real affection for the market. I think it's because it's where I got my start and the fact that you connect with people at a very special time in their lives. Some of the people I've met through working colleges have become lifelong friends. It's also cool to have a former student show up at a theater show and bring his family or have someone who used to see me on their campus be in the audience at a corporate event. I never thought of the college market as a 'stepping stone,' I've always had respect for it and I'm honored that schools still make up a portion of my calendar year after year. We try to keep the fee affordable for colleges and I'll continue to play them as long as they continue to invite me to campus!" QUOTES FROM SCHOOLS:

"He was great. An ultimate crowd pleaser and the best show I've ever seen. If you've not booked him yet, you need to get on the phone today." Dwayne V. Elliott, Director Student Campus Events, Vanderbilt University

www.campusactivitiesmagazine.com

"Craig Karges is the best act in the market. My first choice when it comes to entertainers." Doris Jackson Munoz, Director of Student Involvement, Methodist University

"Craig is awesome. He is our preferred Family Weekend entertainer because he really engages and amazes an audience. A cut above everyone else on the college circuit, he is a master of his craft and students, staff and families walk away impressed. He is a slam dunk for 400 plus attendance at a university of 1900 undergraduates. More than that though, our students talk about what they saw for weeks afterwards. Craig is the consummate professional." David E. Law, Director of Student Activities, Regis University

"Craig is a true professional. Craig kept everyone enthralled. I've been in higher education for 27 years with 12 spent in student activities. There is no doubt in my mind that Craig Karges is still the best performer I have ever worked with. Great performer, even better person." Dulce was absolutely amazing and very easy to work with. She read her audience well and took lots of photos with fans. I would recommend her personally to any college. Jacob King, Graduate Assistant / Advisor Nazareth College, Rochester, NY 02/11/16 50 Colie's Cafe at Nazareth College 3332--Dulce was very standoffish and came in a bad mood. She offensively called her driver an immigrant because she felt that he was incompetent in his driver skills. Upon leaving she waited too long to call her cab and because I am in charge of the event I had to stay and wait for her to call a cab. She did not tell me that she was leaving, instead just got up and left while talking to the driver. Her overall attitude was unfriendly and almost condescending. However, the students loved her performance. Idalia Blake, Live@Naz Chair ERIC O'SHEA 1/5 Summit Comedy, Inc.

dialed 911, if you listen to NPR or watch PBS, if you or your family is on Medicare or Medicade, even the clean air we breathe and clean water we drink. LBJ’s impact is felt very strongly in my hometown of Austin, where he is a hero, as was his wife, Lady Bird. When he first became a congressman in the thirties he went to DC and procured public funds for all our public works. He built our nation’s very first public housing project in Austin. He also built all of the area lakes; the lake that is in the center of Austin was originally called Town Lake. Lady Bird thought Town Lake was an eyesore, so she took it upon herself to start all these beautification projects. She spent a lot of her own money and raised a lot of money so they could put in beautiful flowers and trees, over 10 miles of hike and bike trail, a boardwalk that extends

over the water, even an amphitheater for bands to do outdoor shows. In fact, that is where Stevie Ray Vaughan’s family choose to place his memorial, because they know it was Stevie Ray’s favorite place on the planet to perform.

Lady Bird was a very humble woman. She did not want to take any credit for all the beautiful things she did for Austin. So Austin waited about 2 weeks after she died to change the name Town Lake to Lady Bird Lake.

Despite all his achievements LBJ was not without his critics. He was frustrated the Vietnam War he inherited made him unpopular in the press. He was quoted as saying “If one morning I walked on top of the water across the Potomac River, the headline that afternoon would read: "President Can't Swim." His daughter recalled how difficult life in the White House was for her, hearing protesters outside her window chant “Hey, hey, LBJ, how many kids have you killed

today?” while her husband was serving in Vietnam. My brother-in-law, who also served in Vietnam, bristled when I mentioned LBJ. He told me Johnson only visited Vietnam once, and was so unpopular with the troops they removed all the soldier’s guns who would be near him, for fear one of them might try to assassinate him. So, like all politicians, he was loved by some and hated by others. But after learning about his contributions that still effect us all today, I for one am proud he hailed from the Lone Star State.

Steven Kent McFarlin (AKA “Spanky”) has been described by the press as a “campus entertainment icon.” He has been voted “Campus Comic of the Year” and the “Campus Performer of the Year” (LaffGuru.com). His credits include over fifty TV appearances, including: Showtime, Good Morning America, and The Late Show. You may contact him at standupcomic@live.com
