ERIN JACKSON Exceptional Comedian

Over the years, many students have reached out to me for advice after they have seen me speak. I love to help and always make myself available to them.

Four years ago, the dean of students from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh emailed me after I presented my welcome week program to their new students. An orientation leader was seeking advice on public speaking. The dean connected me with this student, Jake White. I called him and we spoke for an hour. Little did I know that I would end that conversation more inspired than Jake did!

Jake started an innovative program known as Party.0 in 2012. He wanted me to mentor him on how to be an effective public speaker so he could promote this program to other col-

leges and universities. Party.0 presents students with an opportunity to party alcohol-free. As a junior in college Jake experienced how lonely it was to not to partake in the popular weekend drinking scene. Wanting to create an option for himself and his peers, he started throwing sober parties. Jake is now the 24-year-old Executive Director for Party.0 and speaks to students in high schools and colleges.

Jake felt that for him and many others, college created an interesting ultimatum. "Are you going to be social, or sober?" He wanted to make friends, have fun, and feel good without drinking or doing drugs. He found that Party.0 was a way to gather hundreds of students around in a safe, positive, and inclusive environment.

The foundation of Party.0's success is that it is not school sponsored, it is strictly student run. The students maintain total control to come up with their own solution to the epidemic of high-risk drinking on campuses. Jake was hosting two off-campus parties per month with an average attendance of 150 students. The highest attendance was 214. No alcohol was present. They look like any other house party there are DJ's, dancing, and prizes. He has gained sponsorship from Red Bull and Papa John's Pizza, where they provide free goods. Jake built a texting list of interested students that could be notified about the parties. In fact nine out of ten students who were approached wanted to be added to the text notification list. What I find remarkable is that half of those students were drinkers.

Party.0 gave them an excuse to not drink. Those students never arrived at a party with alcohol and there was never a battle between the drinkers and the non-drinkers. I asked Jake how they reacted when they arrived. He noted that some were uncomfortable when they first came into the party. "It was really cool to see them gain confidence and realize that they did not need the alcohol to loosen up, to talk to a girl, or to be stupid to have fun."

I will be interested to see if those students decrease their alcohol use moving forward as they learn to socialize comfortaby without it. Recently I reached out to Michael

Hutkin a freshman at St. Norbert College in De Pere, WI. Michael said, "I love Party.0 because you get to meet new people in an environment that is very safe and I can't forget to mention very fun! There is tons of dancing, music, food, and games. When I went to the first Party .0 I was not sure really what to expect, because I was never one to attend parties. I am honestly happy I went because I was able to meet a lot of great people, and become really good friends with a lot of them."

Michael got to know the two students who are in charge of organizing and bringing it to life. He found them to be inspiring, and extraordinary individuals. They asked him to help organize

the parties. “In my honest opinion this event is a great way to keep a lot of people away from alcohol and making sure that people are being safe, smart, and staying out of trouble. Party.0 is an extremely fun, enjoyable, environment, and you will make many good memories as well as establishing amazing friendships and relationships. You don't need alcohol to have fun, all you need is tons of people and some dance music and you got yourself a great party!" Shannan Salter also from St Norbert said, “I went to the Halloween Party.0 and I had a wonderful time. I was a little nervous when I first arrived to the party because I did not know what to expect. However,

when I first arrived I was welcomed and found that many of my friends were already there. I was a little worried that Party.0 would be a little awkward because it is not like a typical college party, but I found that this party was just as or more fun than those "typical" parties. There was a DJ, pizza, games, and friends, I mean what more could you ask for on a Friday night?”

She had the opportunity to meet many different students that she may not have while playing a game. “We all remember meeting each other and our conversations since it was a completely sober event, which made it a safe and comfortable setting to meet new people. I think Party.0 gives all individuals the chance to attend and partake in the typical party scene that is associated with college, but in a safe way where no one is pressured to do anything he or she does not wish to do. Having these sober parties as options on the weekend gives students more options of events to partake in that do not include drinking, which I believe is very important. Many times I am looking for ways to stay social but do not want to attend a typical party with alcohol, and I think Party.0 is the perfect alternative. I cannot wait to attend the next Party.0; in fact I plan on bringing my roommates and friends to introduce them to the unique and entertaining event.”

how to raise money, implemented what he learned, and is working full time at growing this. I truly admire his dedication and conviction. Right now there are four campuses in Wisconsin who host Party.0 and several others have expressed interest.

Any two students who want to start Party.0 can. If you are interested in bringing Party.0 to your campus you can reach out to Jake. Once you decide to move forward, Jake will help you plan, promote, and fund this initiative. He will train you on how to raise money for the events, and how to gain sponsorship for food and

beverages. He will also teach you how to look for off- campus venues, and how to publicize the parties. Jake is then available on an ongoing basis for advice - think of him as your sober party coach! For more information and to connect with Jake White, email: jake@party0.org or visit party0.org THIS STORY WRITTEN BY ELAINE PASQUA

For Jake there is a lot of satisfaction. “The best part is watching Party.0 leaders discover that they can have success throwing these parties even though they doubted they could pull it off.” Jake started a non-profit in February 2015. His goal is to bring this innovative program to campuses across the country. He purchased a book on

University of Akron Main Campus, Akron, OH 10/20/15 494 Student Union Ballrooms 5555555 Adam does a fantastic job keeping the students engaged with his comedy. We love bringing him to campus because our students can't get enough of him! Robbie Williford, Grad Assistant for RHPB

Philadelphia University, Philadelphia, PA 08/21/16 189 Philadelphia University Auditorium 5555555 Adam is a great performer! We have had him twice and always puts on a great show both times. He does a great job at keeping the audience engaged and active. Adam came for welcome week and he really got people to be excited for future CAB events! Kathryn Avanzato, Comedy and Variety Chair Lebanon Valley College, Annville, PA

08/26/16 500+ Blair Music Hall 5555555 I have been fortunate enough to have seen Adam multiple times over the past few years. This show was very unique in how he began to incorporate himself into the show. His ability to connect with incoming students about issues such as dating and time management is nothing new, but this time he also was able to address mental health. At the same time he kept the show light and students laughing. We have received tremendous feedback from out students about the comedy, but also about how he handled mental health. Adam is simply not a comedian, he is a man who tells a story through jokes while allowing people to feel accepted and want to open up. Highly recommend, he is the best college comedian out there! Ryan Goernemann, Student Programing Board - Event Chair ALEX STONE (65/32/5/ 4.65) Alex Stone Comedy

ANDREW SLEIGHTER (89/26.99/4.23) Summit Comedy, Inc.

Minnesota State Community and Technical College-Moorhead, Moorhead, MN 09/23/15 150+ Fireplace Commons 4445454 Andrew did a great job while performing at our campus. We had booked Andrew for a noon show which leaves a kind of strange environment and audience for a comedian to work with, but Andrew did a great job of keeping the audience engaged as best he could. We had an attendance of 150 for his performance which was our biggest attendance yet this semester. I also felt that his material was very well suited for a noon show and the very public performance space we

provided. I would recommend Andrew for his ability to work with a tough audience and the appropriateness of his jokes for a college audience. Overall, we had a great time hosting Andrew on our campus! Erin Edinger, Student Development Services Intern Winona State University, Winona, MN 09/24/15 180 Somsen Auditorium 2445555 He was a good stand up comedian but my student body was not completely impressed. They said that he has done the exact show on Conan and when they looked him up online. I would advise that he works on some new material. Also some of my students were a little offended by some of his content mainly with him saying retarded kids. He had a great personality off stage and great with keeping in contact with me but as a performance it wasn't our favorite. very easy to work with. She read her audience well and took lots of photos with fans. I would recommend her personally to any college. Jacob King, Graduate Assistant / Advisor Nazareth College, Rochester, NY 02/11/16 50 Colie's Cafe at Nazareth College 3332--Dulce was very standoffish and came in a bad mood. She offensively called her driver an immigrant because she felt that he was incompetent in his driver skills. Upon leaving she waited too long to call her cab and because I am in charge of the event I had to stay and wait for her to call a cab. She did not tell me that she was leaving, instead just got up and left while talking to the driver. Her overall attitude was unfriendly and almost condescending. However, the students loved her performance. Idalia Blake, Live@Naz Chair Keuka College, Keuka Park, NY 02/27/16 50 Geiser Dinning Hall 4444444 Those in attendance absolutely loved her! Texas A&M University-San Antonio, San Antonio TX 08/24/16 500+ Outdoor/Lawn 5445-44 The students had a lot of fun with this novelty and liked having their logo and information on the back of the keychain. The only thing that they didn't care for was that in the photos it was a little hard to tell it was a big blue chair. Some students said it looked like a blue blob in the photos. I tried to explain that some of that had to do with our backdrop (no building in the background...just pretty blue sky!) OVERALL: Great activity that was different for our campus. Opioid Drug Use: A Deadly Addiction

Just this week the news broke that for the first time in many years the death rate in the U.S. has increased. The reason? Opioid drug overdoses.

I wrote my first column for Real Life on Campus in August 2010. In those six years I have only repeated two topics. After seeing a special town forum on CNN on opiate drug abuse I feel like I need to address this issue again. I personally know five young men who died from heroin overdoses. What did they have in common? They came from loving, well educated, and comfortable home environments. They defied all the stereotypes of addiction, which began with prescription drug abuse. This is the first article of a two-part series. Next month I will address fentanyl.

Many teens and young adults have access to these pills through their medicine cabinets at home or through their friends. Environmental factors can determine if someone develops an addiction. The developing brain is more at risk for addiction, making those who are under the age of 25 more vulnerable. In 2014, 168,000 12 to 17 year olds had an addiction to prescription drugs.

There's no clinical evidence that these drugs are good for chronic pain, in fact some people experience heightened pain. Opioids were developed to treat acute pain and were not meant for long term use. They should not be taken for more than two weeks. Some doctors are getting cash in exchange for the scripts and many are prescribing way too many pills for what is needed.

The last 15 years have seen an explosion of addictions, overdoses, and deaths from prescription pain pills. This is truly a man-made, manufactured crisis. We live in a society where people want a quick fix or easy solution. People do not think that prescription drugs are a problem because they are legal. In the late 1990's laws were enacted to make it easier to prescribe these pills and pharmaceutical companies aggressively marketed them. Since then, sales of opioid drugs quadrupled and deaths from overdoses quadrupled as well. This is an American epidemic - we make up 5% of world population but consume 80% of the world opioids Here are some startling stats:

From 2000 to 2014 overdose deaths from opioids increased by 200% Opioid overdoses are killing 78 people in this country each day In 2014 opioids were involved in the deaths of 28,647 people in the U.S. 2,000,000 Americans depend on or abuse pain medications More than 1,000 people per day go to emergency rooms from misuse of pain meds

Overdoses from opioid drug abuse is the number one preventable cause of death today. Doctors often prescribe many more pills than they need to. In fact, 91% people who overdose and survive are written a script for the opiate by the same doctor who gave it to them in the first place. Seventeen percent are getting their opioids from emergency rooms.

When people get their wisdom teeth taken out, the oral surgeons typically prescribe 20 Percocet or Vicodin. What the patient typically needs are four to five to get through the discomfort of the first day and a half. After that the person can switch to ibuprofen or aspirin. The medical community is reacting slowly, but the CDC has recently issued stricter prescribing guidelines.

Opioids, like OxyContin, Vicodin, and Percocet are very addictive. The body makes its own opioids or endorphins. When one takes these drugs their body stops manufacturing them because it no longer needs to. These drugs travel to the opioid receptors in the brain. Eventually the receptors get blunted and the person wants more to get the same effect. If he or she stops taking the pills their bodies no longer have the opioids and they crash, feeling sick with flu-like symptoms and nausea. At this point the opioid is not taken to get high, but it is taken just to feel normal. And so the addictive cycle begins...in five to seven days someone can be-

come addicted.

Addicts become consumed with getting high. My friend Chris who eventually died, told me while he was in remission, that he frequently dreamed of getting high. The drugs on the street are quite expensive. One pill can cost on average $40.00. As the cost soars, the dealer may come to them with an alternative - a dime bag of heroin will relieve withdrawal symptoms and it will be much cheaper. No one ever envisions becoming a heroin addict, it tends to follow along a series of events. One of the problems with heroin today is that is very pure. A person doesn't necessarily have to inject it, it can be easily snorted or rolled in a joint. When the stigma of using a needle is removed, a person is more likely to use. Communities which had very low crime rates are seeing an increase in home robberies as addicts are struggling to support their habit. These are crimes of desperation. My son's girlfriends' parents were robbed, both my sister and brother had robberies in their neighborhoods. This trend is taxing communities as the police are pouring so many of their resources into solving these crimes.

So what can we do? Often people expect a pill for pain. As a patient, you and your doctor should work together. Ask, "Do I really need this pain killer?" Learn about the side effects. Is there an alternative? Ask your doctor to write the lowest amount of milligrams possible, it's important to start gradually. If someone offers you a pill to take recreationally, turn it down! All of the people I knew who died of heroin overdoses started with an offer to take an opioid at a party. It seemed quite innocent at the time but quickly took control of their lives. What can you look for if you suspect that a friend might have an addiction? They will have the inability to control opioid use even though it's having negative effects on personal relationships or finances. Their pupils will be more pin point, experience constipation, and nausea Their skin might be itchy. They can easily nod off. The stigma might drive them into the shadows, they don't seek help. They need to know that addiction is a disease and they should not try to do this alone. Talk to them about getting help. Perhaps you can do some research to find a reputable rehab center. You too can help save a life!

Losing someone dear

Many of you know or have known my sister, Leona Plaugh. She passed away on September 28, 2016 after nearly a two-year battle with a very aggressive form of cancer. In fact, it was so rare that the doctors here missed it completely to start off with. She started having trouble with her right leg, which appeared to be a pulled muscle. She went to the doctor, who sent her on to physical therapy. No one ever dreamed it could be an extra-skeletal sarcoma. But when it didn’t get better, she was sent for tests and the MRI showed the cancer. The doctor’s office then referred her to renown cancer hospital, MD Anderson, in Houston. But this was in the summer and the staff at the doctor’s office sent the referral to the wrong place and it was lost in Fax world. Meanwhile Leona was at the AEP conference in Wilmington DE waiting on the notice that she was supposed to go to Houston, but the referral never came. Even after checking with the admissions office at MD Anderson, they could find no referral. So her doctor’s office freaked out. Instead they decided to refer her to Emory Hospital in Atlanta. There was only one doctor in the entire hospital that could deal with a sarcoma, so she was referred to Dr Russell. Leona was seen and then sent home with no pain medicine and by this time she was in excruciating pain. Instead of pain medicine the doctor put her on ibuprofin which did nothing for the pain.

Meanwhile. Dr Russel was scheduled for a vacation that she was looking forward to so she put off Leona’s surgery until AFTER her vacation. She could have easily allowed another doctor to do the surgery but chose not to.

Upon Doctor Russell’s return, when Leona was rolled into the pre-surgery room, she was in terrible pain and barely alive, but in cases of surgery, pain medicine is not allowed prior to surgery. Leona and our family arrived at 7am thinking the Leona would surely be first-up that morning. But that was not the case. She was scheduled as the second surgery. In the pre-consult meeting that morning, Dr Russell assure her that she had studied all the results and films from her tests done previously and knew exactly what tact to take. The surgery was scheduled for 3 hours. After about 5 hours, the family and her friends that had driven to Atlanta to be with her,

started to worry. The only response from the floor nurse was that “she was still in surgery”. Finally, I had scheduled no one to take care of my dogs, so I had to leave to drive home (4 hours). I got a call from Joe, her husband, after trying to check on her previously, and was told that she was out of surgery but they didn’t get all of the tumor because it was wrapped around the sciatic nerve. Leona had specifically told me that she had a conversation with Dr Russell, letting her know that if taking the leg was necessary to get a positive outcome, she was okay with that happening. Leona’s main concern was survival. The surgery that Leona underwent, according to family that was there was 8-9 hours and even then they closed her up without getting all the cancer.

Upon recovery, Both Steve Thomas and Rick Stowe from eastCoast Entertainment were visiting Leona when I arrived in Atlanta. Steve told us that he thought he could get her into MD Anderson in Houston because he had connections. And that materialized for her. She decided to leave Emory, not trusting that they were ever going to be able to give her a positive outcome now and was transferred to MD Anderson in Houston.

been taken off during the surgery at Emory, she would have had a much better chance of survival.

She arrived home just before her birthday on July and for a while she was feeling better. My birthday was July 27 and she had me over for a birthday party along with my son, Ian and his two daughters. She was obviously in bed but in good spirits. That was the last time I saw her lucid. The cancer started consuming her body and near the end she was on morphine every 2 hours.

She passed away at 9:57 am on September 28, 2016. She was a member of Columbia SC City Council and was known to battle the mayor on issues she felt were simply political posturing on his part. She actual sold advertising for a time for both American Entertainment Magazine and Campus Activities Magazine. She was Executive Director of The International Association of Corporate Entertainment Producers (IACEP) and finally for The Association of Entertainment Professionals (AEP) and truly loved by members of both organizations. She will be missed!

Of course at this point MD Anderson was playing catch-up trying to clean up someone elses mess. Leona was given a special blend of Chemo but after several rounds, her white blood cells were not responding and coming back up. They allowed her to come back home but she had to realize that additional treatments would be necessary.

Shortly after coming home this first time. :Leona began to have intense pain in her leg and was returned to Houston where they found the cancer had returned. Finally to stop the spread they recommended taking off the leg at the hip and Leona agreed.

After surgery, chemo and rehab, she was allowed again to go home. Then shortly after she again began to have trouble with the stump not healing and seemingly infected. She was returned to Houston and the Infectious Disease people were called in. Again the doctors there tried various versions fo Chemo and should she have responded, they had offered her a special trial position. But her numbers were not responding. Because giving her additional chemo with her white blood count being so low, could compromise her health, they decided to send her home to hospice, running out of options. They told her that they strongly believed that had the leg

MAKING MUSIC AND DELIVERING COMEDY I was in charge this past year of working with the showcase selection committee at AEP’s National Signature Event, so when they came to me and expressed an interest into one act emceeing the entire showcasing eventtwo full days and four major showcases, I was completely astounded. I have seen major performers over the years, struggle to have enough good material to manage emceeing one showcase set and I have seen some during my 36 years in this business, fail miserably. Plus add to this the fact that the AEP buyers are very seasoned buyers who have worked with artists at shows all over the world- I’m talking the best in the business. So these guys would not be performing for just student buyers learning this business, but guys from Disney and Carnival to major producers who have the clout to book absolutely most any acts within

their client’s budgets, but I was expressing told that the commitee thought these guys were clean and had the depth to make it work for just about any audience in the world. How could I not take the advice of the professionals that were on my team. So I went with it. I didn’t even bother to talk to Kate Magill who I have known since she started in this business. I just said, “let’s give it a try.”

Of course I was a little uneasy. I had only seen the video provided for these guys, yet I was going to trust them to be able to stretch their bit when a band had a complicated set-up. Now don’t get me wrong, Rick Stowe and the team at eastCoast Entertainment are not only professional but are quick to resolve any situations that come up. In my mind, they are the best in the business. Nevertheless, in this business

anything can happen and it is at that time you rely on the emcees to save the day- and we were not asking them to do this once but in four separate showcases that ranged about three hours each. Not only that, there were a lot of music groups that had complicated set-ups and in some cases that was going on directly behind these guys as they performed. Let me just say, that Marcus and Guy were absolutely exceptional. Not only did they play off of each other very well but they interacted with the stage crew setting up the next act and included them in their bit.

My worry was that these guys would not have enough material to last for 4 showcases and two full days, but not only did they carry the weight of the interaction with the buyers. but their in-

teraction with each other and everyone both on and off the stage was a work of mastery. Not only did these guys deliver fresh, clean comedy but it was timed so well that it did not seem staged at all but came right off the cuff. Here is the best part, the audience of very exclusive buyers were not only engaged but impressed enough to rate this act as the one act they would reccomend for the coveted Rising Star Award, which means they get to interact with some of the industry’s top professional producers and then come back and put what they learned to use with a free showcase in 2017.

As for me, I thought these guys did a better job of emceeing these sets of showcases than almost any that I have seen in my career. They were “REAL”, conversed with the audience of professionals, and were “spot on” in coming up with hilarious quips that tied right in with the material they had already planned. Even with a couple of hours total, that was required for them to be on stage and at the top of their game, they never once missed a mark. How many comedians could have that as a bragging point? Not only that, they were clean enough to play before any audience. They didn’t have to rely on “dick jokes” or other lewd material to make the audience laugh. After playing emcees for everyone else, on the last day they had their own 15 minute showcase. This set was full of musical impressions that just allowed the audience to see yet another side of what they could do.

I think the thing that amazed me was that they were so relaxed.

I once had the opportunity to interview one of my most admired musical legends, Harry Chapin. He told me that the biggest and most important thing you could ever do with an audience is to invite them into your personal spaceyour living room- so to speak. “When you are able to get them there, they become an integral part of what you do and how you do it. They are the show for you and you are for them. It doesn’t matter whether it is music or comedy

or something else. They are your friends and part of your life at that moment and you should treat them as such.”

a long history working with producers and casinos all over the world- and of course is a legend in the campus market.

While this conference happens after the end of the school year in June, AEP is going to be offering special incentives to get schools more involved because most of the talent pool is entrely different than what you would see at local regional conferences or even at the national. Conference registration includes educational sessions and meals plus in 2017 no membership will be required for schools to participate in the conference. Two delegates can attend for the price of one and very nice rooms at South Point are Only $80/ night with no additional charges except tax. Plus you will get to see the return of Marcus and Guy. South Point has its own Horse arena inside the hotel, plus 64 lanes of bowling, swimming pools, multiple restaurants from fast food to the most luxurious, and a multiplex. It is a local favorite for all ages and the host of “Comicon”. Showcases will be in the showroom and open to the public. The conference is short and sweet but very productive and this the only place you can connect with genuine professional buyers. If this is an area that you might like to pursue, you have the cream of the crop, For more information as it is available go to one of these sites:
